Everest awaits Panthers I

T WOULD BE EASY to look at last weekend’s game against the Roosters and simply believe that Penrith didn’t turn up, or were totally outclassed. The truth is, however, that the Panthers tried their guts out. Unfortunately, the club’s injury crisis just won’t go away, and in fact seems to only get worse. It would now seem evident that Penrith will limp to the end of the season, count their losses, and put their focus totally into 2014 while other sides battle out the finals.

South Sydney at 1300SMILES Stadium – a venue where very few smiles have been worn by home fans this year. The Cowboys produced their best win of the season, and it’s unfortunate for Penrith given the confidence they would have taken from it heading into this weekend’s clash at Penrith Stadium. Nobody has ever denied that the Cowboys have the cattle on the field to rattle most sides in the competition, and ably led by Johnathan Thurston last Saturday, they

at the Panthers, hence the recall of Geoff Daniela into the centres and Nathan Smith onto the bench. Smith is off-contract at the end of this season, and still without a club, so nobody will deny the fact that he’ll try his guts out this weekend in an attempt to impress 15 NRL coaches that he’s worth some of their remaining salary cap for next season. Daniela’s defence and speed is a worry, and he’ll need one hell of a game to stop the Cowboys’ powerful backs.

Stadium on a chilly night. The boys do, however, need our support – so why not make an exception and let the kids stay up just that little bit later? With the Cowboys in the bottom half of the table and not bringing a lot of away support, it’d be horrible to see a low crowd given the Panthers do still have a realistic chance of reaching the eight. Mount Everest may await the Panthers, but it all starts with one step. You should be there for that step.

The last time the Cowboys and Panthers met, Penrith failed to score a point. It was round five this season, and North Queensland won 30-0. If, however, Penrith are a hope of playing finals football, then they need to win matches like this one against the Cowboys on Sunday. In fact, I predict they’d need to win all five of their remaining matches.

COWBOYS FIND FORM After struggling all year and telling their coach Neil Henry he won’t be required next season, the Cowboys somehow found some form last weekend, beating top of the table

finally showed what they’re made of. There’s little doubt that if the Cowboys turn it on, they’ll give Penrith a massive run for their money this weekend. They’ll be out to prove to their fans that their performance against Souths was not a one-off.

COMINGS AND GOINGS With Adam Docker and Sika Manu suffering long-term injuries and James Roberts out as well, the stocks are pretty thin

SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTY The last time Penrith played on a Sunday night, they beat the Melbourne Storm. Could it be an omen for another Sunday night win? The Panthers have done their best to create cheap ticketing deals for this game as the Sunday night timeslot is not a friendly one for suburban footy – it’s a school night, and most people would rather have their kids getting ready for bed than out at Penrith

THE FINAL WORD I was much more confident about this game being a victory for the Panthers before Docker and Manu got injured, and before the Cowboys took a sledgehammer to the Rabbitohs last weekend. I still believe Penrith can win, but I think it’ll be a close contest that could go down to the wire. The Panthers must aim up in defence as the Cowboys are fast and strong out wide. EXTRATIME | 3

PANTHERS FORWARD JEREMY LATIMORE PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Latimore proves his worth BACK FROM A HORROR ANKLE INJURY, JEREMY LATIMORE IS GIVING THE PANTHERS PLENTY OF SERVICE AND IS HOPING TO HAVE A BIGGER AND BETTER YEAR IN 2014...

J

EREMY LATIMORE BEGAN HIS career at Penrith with a blistering off the bench performance in the side’s big round one win against Canberra. But that was the last fans saw of Latimore until he returned to the top grade on July 21, more than four months after seriously injuring his ankle, which later got worse due to blood clotting. After enjoying a relatively healthy career

to that point, 26-year-old Latimore expressed just how tough it was sitting on the sidelines after just one outing with his new club. “Before my injury I hadn’t missed a game since I was 20,” he told Extra Time. “For the first six weeks I couldn’t put any weight on it. I had a few weeks off from football and all I could really do was cardio and weights in the gym. I was doing extra swimming and boxing classes just to keep

my body in shape. I didn’t drink for four months, which helped my recovery.” Latimore revealed how studying a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Wollongong kept his mind off football and what he was missing out on. “Uni kept me busy and half sane,” he said. “I travel down to Wollongong to study once a week or more if I can work it around footy training.” Since his return against the Newcastle Knights three weeks ago, Latimore’s been showing fans and his teammates exactly what they’ve been missing out on with some solid performances.

The former Eel, Warrior and Dragons player said he’s enjoying his time at Penrith and admits the club’s future is in safe hands. “We’re a club who don’t have any representative stars or Origin stars but we try and build our team as a team, where everyone does their job,” Latimore said. “I can see what Gus is building here and with Ivan here it’s pretty exciting. “Our new signings next year are quality signings plus all the off-field stuff with Panthers and James Packer – it’s a club moving forward.” Latimore is contracted to the Panthers until the end of 2014.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

All over for the Panthers 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

T

HE OPENING 20 MINUTES last week saw the Panthers threaten an upset but then the class of the Roosters side started to shine through and the quality of the Panthers’ execution dropped markedly with the final scoreline most disappointing. That loss I believe ends the Panthers’ hopes for a spot in the finals this year as with their draw I see them possibly falling one win short of the eight. Let hope I’m wrong and they win five from five and grab a top eight spot. It was great seeing Scott Sattler on the big screen discussing the 2003 Grand Final with Scott McRae with the 10 year anniversary promotion of the game against the Roosters. While there were premiership flags

handed out to the fans, what was a bit of a disappointment was that other players from the team were not part of the ‘celebration’ in some way. -----It is my view that the top four for this year are sorted out, it just depends on the position they finish but the Roosters are my tip for the Minor Premiership. The form of Cronulla and the Bulldogs over the past few weeks should see them in the top eight somewhere with one more win putting them on 28 points, which should be enough to get them in. That leaves Canberra, Newcastle, Gold Coast and the Warriors to fight out the final two positions in the top eight and with each

Priddo’s Point proudly supported by Heartland Penrith

of them facing a side above them on the ladder this week I am sure all four will still be in the same position next week. -----While there has been debate again about the merits of the Golden Point, the one point Newcastle managed to secure last week could be enough to get them over the line. They are now alone in eighth position and as long as there are no more draws, they will not finish equal with any of the other teams they are fighting it out with. This takes ‘for and against’ out of it for them and could mean it comes right down to the last game in the last round which would be the Sharks against the Raiders before the final eight is sorted.

JOSH MANSOUR IN ACTION PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Mansour wants wing spot JAMES ROBERTS TO THE CENTRES? THAT’S THE PLAN JOSH MANSOUR IS SUGGESTING AS A LONG-TERM HEADACHE LOOMS FOR COACHING STAFF OVER THE LOOK OF PENRITH’S BACKLINE...

A

DEADLY BACKLINE PARTNERSHIP is looming if Panthers stars Josh Mansour and James Roberts have their way. The pair are two of Penrith’s, and the NRL’s, best attacking weapons but with both players making names for themselves in the same position (wing), how is it possible that they’ll both be able to fit into the side each week?

“I was actually talking to James the other day about forming a partnership,” Mansour told Extra Time. “I’d play him in the centres and myself on the wing, I wouldn’t mind that. But at the end of the day it’s the coach’s decision wherever he wants him or I to play. I’m sure he’ll find a spot in the squad for both of us.” The reason this predicament hasn’t popped up until now is because both players

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS Business Thrives when you’re having FUN... & so do you

have had a terrible run of luck this season with injuries, which has forced the pair to miss 23 games between them this year. Mansour returned to the Panthers line-up for the first time since June 16 during last week’s big loss to the Sydney Roosters. The 23-year-old was recovering from a severe eye socket injury, his second major stint on the sideline after injuring his ankle on April 13. “The last few months have been like a roller coaster,” Mansour said. “It was a bit frustrating because I hadn’t had any long-term injuries in my footy career, so I had to stay positive and

optimistic whilst on that road to recovery. I just had to keep fit and get back into the team somehow.” The 2012 ‘Rookie of the Year’ winner admitted there were times where he thought he may never play first grade again this year. “There was some negative thoughts that crept it,” Mansour said. “I did a lot of rehab training. I didn’t go out partying and tried to keep my mind off things.” Mansour said his goal is to finish the season on a high by doing his best to help guide the Panthers to a seemingly unlikely finals appearance.

GONE FOR THE YEAR: ADAM DOCKER PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Adam docked for the season ADAM DOCKER IS THE LATEST PLAYER TO BE ADDED TO PENRITH’S LONG-TERM INJURY LIST, WITH A FRACTURED HAND TO KEEP HIM OUT FOR THE REST OF THE NRL SEASON...

W

HEN A HORRIBLE KNEE to the head by Newcastle forward Kade Snowden almost put Adam Docker’s season in doubt with a fractured cheekbone, fans were terrified that another one of the club’s hard-hitters, the last remaining Bash Brother, would also find his way onto Penrith’s horrendous injury list. Even though Docker dodged a bullet against the Knights and was cleared to play

on, his luck eventually ran out during the first half against the Roosters last Friday when he fractured his hand. Before his latest setback the 22-year-old, who signed a new two-deal with the club in June, said it was a “great feeling” knowing that fans actually cared about his well-being. “Just knowing people would be devastated if I was out means a lot,” he said. It’s fair to say Penrith have been the

unluckiest club in 2013 when it has come to serious injuries. In fact only a handful of players have played every game this season. Recently, the side lost the influential and experienced Nigel Plum as well as the dynamic Matt Robinson. “I think it’s been a massive difference with them not here,” Docker admitted. “We’ve got players that can fill their spots but losing Nigel Plum who carts the ball up all day and tackles all day, is a massive blow. “Matty Robbo runs great lines and always runs through holes. There’s always someone to fill the places, it’s just whether we can gel together is the thing.”

But it’s perhaps Plum’s omission from the side that’s had the most impact on Docker, with many people regarding them as the league’s “Bash Brothers”. “I’m deadest missing him, I can’t wait till he comes back,” Docker said. “It’s always good playing with Plummy, he’s inspirational whenever he makes a tackle.” Docker believes Plum is the sort of player that every team needs. “Plummy is just so polite and he’ll help you no matter want. Every up and coming player needs someone like that beside them,” he said.

2003 legends call by to say G’day SEND your Panthers gossip to The Masked Panther at news@westernweekender.com.au

A

COUPLE OF PANTHERS legends enjoyed the game against the Roosters last Friday night from the comfort of the Weekender’s corporate box. No surprise, both Luke Priddis and Scott Sattler both confirmed that this column was their favourite in ‘Extra Time’. See a picture of the two 2003 Grand Final heroes below! Travis Robinson is packing his bags and headed south for next season. The winger has signed a deal with the Melbourne Storm, ending his time at the Panthers. Robinson was in great form early in the season but has mainly been playing for Windsor in recent times. Departing Panthers forward Clint Newton has been nominated for the prestigious Ken Stephen Medal. Players are nominated for their involvement in charity work, youth development or community support that demonstrates their ability as a community role model. The seventh annual NRL One Community Awards will be held on Monday, September 30 at Sydney’s Town Hall and is set to be an inspiring evening of celebration for the contributions made by NRL’s unsung heroes including volunteers, grassroots clubs, teachers, students, and NRL players. The winner of the Ken Stephen Medal will

LUKE PRIDDIS

be named on this night. “Every year I’m blown away by the tireless contributions made by those in the grassroots rugby league community,” said NRL Interim Community, Culture and Diversity General Manager, Mark deWeerd. Don’t be surprised about the denials coming from all corners about Penrith’s approach to Shaun Johnson over at the Warriors. The Panthers can’t legally approach Johnson about the 2014 season yet, and any speculation about offers being on the table or discussions being had are purely speculative and way too early. Of course the Panthers are interested in Johnson – but time needs to play its part here. Penrith’s round 25 clash against the Bulldogs has been moved from the Friday night (August 30) to the Saturday night (August 31) due to the scheduling conflict between the NRL and AFL at ANZ Stadium. The timeslot is much better for families (5.30pm kickoff) but obviously not so good for sponsors who thought they had a sought after free-to-air timeslot in the bag. Don’t miss the next edition of Extra Time as we move into the semi final stage of our Cheerleader of the Year competition! The girls are ready for battle in the next round of the contest.

ANTHERS FIVE-EIGHTH LACHLAN COOTE made a successful return to football last week when he ran out for his junior club, Windsor Wolves, in the NSW Cup. Even though Coote scored a try in his comeback game from a pectoral tear suffered in round two, he wasn’t able to inspire the Wolves to victory, with the side losing a thriller to Newcastle 38-36. After trailing for most of the game, the Wolves made a huge comeback in the second half to only go down in the final few minutes courtesy of a controversial Knights penalty goal. “I certainly wasn’t happy with the penalty given by the referee… it shouldn’t of been a penalty because it wasn’t for the other 76 minutes of the game,” Wolves coach Garth Brennan declared. Two things the Wolves have been battling with for most of the season is attitude and consistency, and according to Brennan, that’s something that needs to turn around fast with five weeks to go before finals footy. “I’m hoping I can turn their attitude

around, we’ve had a good talk over the last couple of days about where we are at,” he said. “We’re not far away from where we need to be. I’m confident we can turn it around. The talent is certainly there, we just need to turn up with the right attitude to work hard and that’s what it comes down to. “There’s no magic solutions. There’s no famous pep talks from me or Phil Gould. I think they’ve just got to realise they need to roll their sleeves up and work hard.” This Sunday at 2pm the 5th placed Wolves take on Chris Sandow and the 10th placed Wentworthville Magpies at Penrith Stadium. “Wentworthville are a bit like us, they’ve got some quality players and are also looking for some consistency,” Brennan admitted. “I’m under no illusions, it’s going to be a tough game because they are fighting to keep their season alive.” Brennan praised the form of halfback Luke Capewell and second-rower Vaipuna TiaKilifi in recent weeks. Windsor will be without Geoff Daniela and Nathan Smith, who will play first grade.

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER

Behind the scenes with James Maloney EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

O

N LAST WEEK’S SHOW, we showed you a day in the life of Billy Slater. His game day regime, superstitions and goings-on were on display. The Insider decided to follow around a favourite of ‘The Footy Show’, James Maloney on show night to give his take on a day in the life of a ‘Footy Show’ host. A silver screen revelation in 2013, James Maloney punctually arrives at Channel Nine by 6pm. Plain-clothed, with his suit and tie in tow Jimmy settles in with a bite to eat ahead of the all-important pre-show meeting. This is where the laid-back pivot is taken through his paces by ‘The Footy Show’ Executive Producer, Glenn Pallister. Alongside Fatty and Slats, Maloney is brought up to speed with the evening’s run-down.

The panel then make their way to hair and make-up, en route waving to awaiting soon-to-be audience members in line for ‘The Footy Show’. The Kick for Cash specialist can’t help but double take at the posts hoisted in the Channel Nine car park, a certainty to convert $1000 for one lucky fan (we’ll get to his heroics later). The Roosters playmaker turned panellist is suited and booted, rocked back in a make-up chair. At this point the boy is feeling a million miles from the Central Coast. As 8.30pm approaches the team assembles, make their way through the back-stage corridors and as smoke fills the tunnel and Ray Warren’s dulcet tones sing his name ‘The Footy Show’ is on air – its game time. Following his barbequing antics in the third week of the season, Jimmy has

served his tenure for Perfect Partners, now he sits back as the NRL’s elite are probed during the show’s first segment. As he imparts his on-field experience of the week that was, Maloney eases through the show’s opening lines. He could be mistaken for an audience member lost on the panel whilst laughing hysterically at Beau Knows and the Multi Channel Network. With quick-wit and a lovable twang, James Maloney makes easy work of his night on the panel; he even tests his comedic styling during ad-breaks (another perk of seeing ‘The Footy Show’ LIVE). After being chosen to Kick For Cash on behalf of a lucky punter, he’s left with one final assignment. The NRL’s leading point scorer for 2013 knocks it over and celebrates another successful show. And next week, he’ll do it all again!

ANTHERS COACH IVAN CLEARY could do nothing but shake his head in bewilderment after the club lost Sika Manu and Adam Docker to broken hands last week – adding to a horror run of injuries for the Panthers this season. “You can only take so many hits,” Cleary said.

“We’re doing it pretty tough at the moment.” Cleary joked that given OAK is the club’s major sponsor, one would think they’d have stronger bones, given the number of fractures that appear on the injury list. Both Manu and Docker are expected to miss the rest of the season.
