T

he Penrith Panthers travel to Bathurst this weekend to take on the Cronulla Sharks in what shapes as the match that could confirm the side will play finals football in 2014.

Despite sitting in second position on the ladder, the closeness of the NRL competition means anything could happen over the final weeks, and you would think Penrith needs at least 28 points to ensure they finish in the top eight. With 26 points already on the board, one more win

should at least get that challenge out of the way – from there it’ll be all about securing a top four finish.

The Panthers lost their four point buffer on fourth place last weekend when they went down to a high-energy Roosters outfit at Allianz Stadium, and will be looking to put that match behind them as they head to Bathurst to seek revenge on Cronulla, who beat them in controversial circumstances at Remondis Stadium earlier this year.

The Roosters match was always going to be a tough ask for the Panthers – injury ravaged and with a short turnaround impacting their build-up, the team just didn’t look settled from the opening whistle. The kicking game was woeful at times and the side seemed to lack direction, something Ivan Cleary will look to address this week.

With Peter Wallace a big chance of returning against the Sharks, one of Cleary’s major headaches will be solved.

Whilst Jamie Soward has been one of Penrith’s best players this season, he is disadvantaged greatly without Wallace alongside him and the reuniting of the pair is a big plus for the side.

Cronulla were pretty ordinary against the Cowboys last Friday night, and there’s a big chance the Panthers could put a huge score on them on Saturday – in fact, if Penrith are to lose this match it will be because they beat themselves.

With Todd Carney long gone and Paul Gallen under an injury cloud, plus everything else going on out Cronulla way at the moment, performing well on the football field seems to be something the Sharks can only do in patches. As the season wears on, it’ll only get worse.

But the Sharks will smell blood in the water and begin to circle if Penrith’s kicking game is as bad as it was against the Roosters last Saturday. If they see Brent Kite with the ball on the fifth tackle again, they may see an opportunity and wonder if Penrith has really learned anything from last weekend.

The Roosters managed to make big metres up the middle against the Panthers last Saturday and the Sharks are likely to take a similar approach. With a forward pack containing names like Andrew Fifita and Bryce Gibbs, Cronulla can certainly make metres quickly if things go their way. And you cannot deny how pumped

up Luke Lewis and Wade Graham will be against their former club.

And if the Sharks are smart, they will follow the path of both the Roosters and the Broncos and target Jamie Soward’s defence – he missed seven tackles last weekend and made just six, proving a vulnerability in Penrith’s defensive line.

There’s a lot of ifs, buts and maybes when it comes to Cronulla this weekend but the bottom line is that if Penrith play their best football, they should give the Sharks a real spanking. If they play below their best, they may just sneak past the boys from the Shire. Anything other than that and Cronulla may cause a boilover.

Plenty of people have called Penrith ‘pretenders’ this season and performances like last Saturday’s against the Roosters only strengthen those claims.

If the Panthers are to brush off such a tag, then they need to win games like this one and win them big. There’s a big test against the Bulldogs coming up next weekend, but putting the cart before the horse is best avoided.

If Penrith are the real deal in this competition, they must win games like this.

Players welcome road trip T he Panthers will have to pack some extra winter gear this weekend as they head west to Bathurst for the first game of a five year partnership with the NSW country town.

The Panthers set off for Bathurst on Wednesday in preparation for their Saturday afternoon game against the bottomplaced Cronulla Sharks at Bathurst’s Carrington Park.

A sellout crowd is expected at the venue, where Penrith played a trial against the Wests Tigers in 2013.

Panthers hooker James Segeyaro said he couldn’t wait to play a game in front of the club’s Central West fans but admitted he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t thinking about the cold just a tad.

“I think it’s going to be like five degrees during the day,” he said.

“Weather aside, I’m happy the Panthers are bringing a game out there. I think it’s really important we do as much as we can by giving back to the grassroots and going to areas like Bathurst.”

Penrith’s trip to Bathurst, which was announced in December last year, is

expected to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for the local economy, but it’ll also do plenty for Penrith’s brand too.

“It’s good for our brand, the Panthers brand in Bathurst, knowing we’ve got a Leagues Club out there. If we can get more NRL games to areas like Bathurst, the better it is,” Segeyaro said.

Another player looking forward to heading out west is Panthers utility Isaah Yeo, who two and a half years ago moved from Dubbo to Penrith to fulfil his NRL dream.

“Bathurst, being close to Dubbo, there will be a fair few family members out

there. I think it’s a great initiative from rugby league and Panthers to be able to take a game out to the country,” he said.

Yeo said he remembers going to the odd professional rugby league fixture in Dubbo when he was a kid growing up.

“They had a City vs Country match out there one year and Andrew Ryan, also from Dubbo, organised a Bulldogs vs Raiders trial match out there too,” he recalled.

“I expect a packed stadium out there on Saturday because it’s not every day people from country towns can watch an NRL game live.”

I wanted to write this week about the huge success the Rise For Alex round was last weekend and just how powerful the NRL can be when everyone bands together.

What an incredible unity and show of display it was with every single person, no matter which team you go for, uniting together for this one kid who wasn’t even a household name prior to the accident.

That’s what’s so special about rugby league.

You hear and read so many bad stories but when the rugby league community as a whole bands together, there is no stronger force in sport anywhere in Australia.

Seeing Alex wheeled out by his teammates last Sunday, even shedding a tear after holding it together in public for so long, was an incredible moment.

Having done the story on Alex, Wayne Bennett and the other Knights players on ‘The Footy Show’ last week, I was proud to play a small part in bringing that weekend together.

The NRL handled it brilliantly.

In many work places if something bad happens to someone they’re usually out on their own and that’s basically it.

What the NRL has done for Alex is beyond anything but I think they need to step it up and look after every other player that’s suffered an injury out of this game.

I read in the paper recently that a columnist suggested the NRL should consider doing this round every single year.

Not necessarily the Alex McKinnon Round, but a generic round that supports all injured players.

For example, Round 19 of each year we, as a community, should raise money that goes to support players that have been badly affected through injury and aren’t able to resume their normal everyday lives.

What an uplifting, incredible round of football we just had.

It shows just how powerful sport can be when we all unite together as one.

He has more pressure on him than most young stars, but Bryce Cartwright is taking it all in his stride as he makes a name for himself at the Panthers

ryce Cartwright knows how important his surname is to Penrith, so much so he has ‘Cartwright’ inked in large text down his chest.

It’s important because Merv Cartwright, his grandfather, was instrumental in getting Penrith admitted into the NSWRL first grade competition way back in 1967.

His uncle, John Cartwright (current Titans coach), is a Panthers legend and player of nearly 200 games with the club.

His father, David Cartwright, also played a handful of games for the Panthers from 1979 to 1981 as did a number of other relatives.

To say the surname holds pressure would be an understatement.

After so much praise throughout his junior career with local club St Marys, the 19-year-old began his own Panthers story in Round 12 of this year when he made his first grade debut during Penrith’s huge win against Parramatta.

When Cartwright ran out onto the field in the second half off the interchange bench, it was a sight Panthers fans were so desperate to see especially after a breakout season in the Holden Cup last year that not only saw Cartwright win the 2013 title with his young teammates, but also

“It was a dream come true when I debuted against Parramatta at home, it was an amazing game,” Cartwright told Extra Time.

“I’m starting to get used to first grade after stringing a few games together now.

It was always going to take a while to get used to but I’m starting to learn more.”

With his family so deeply enriched in the club, Cartwright revealed he at times feels the pressure attached to his famous surname.

“It feels like that, carrying the name, but as soon as I’m out on the field I just try and keep it simple by playing my own game and not worry about what other people are thinking,” he said.

However, one person Cartwright may want to hear more from is rugby league legend Andrew Johns who praised the youngster deluxe on Triple M last week after Penrith’s thrilling win over the Broncos.

“It’s kind of crazy hearing that from an ‘Immortal’ in Joey, it’s an honour to hear that, but I’m just trying to keep level-headed and focused on my game,” Cartwright said.

Cartwright’s immediate challenge is maintaining his spot in Penrith’s first grade team. Last weekend he was switched to the halves to partner Jamie Soward due to an injury crisis that saw Peter Wallace, Isaac John and Tyrone Peachey all sidelined.

Having had the opportunity to meet and speak with Anthony Griffin only a couple of weeks ago, when I was invited as an ex-Bronco to address the side about my memories playing in the Broncos jumper, I could see he was building a new chapter to the famous club’s culture and could certainly see the growth those young players had achieved under his tutorage.

Thus, I must admit I felt for him when it was announced this week that Wayne Bennett was heading back home.

It was eventually going to happen but Wayne said he would not chase a position where the current coach was still under contract. I thought that he would have been heading back as a coaching director not head coach.

I wish Anthony Griffin all the best for the future. He has certainly handled this situation with dignity.

Let’s hope that last week’s effort by the Panthers was just as coach Cleary put it, ‘one of those games’. It was a very disappointing display by the boys against the Roosters who have proven themselves as real competition contenders while the question mark still hangs over the men from the foot of the mountains.

While there were the excuses about the short turnaround and injuries, it was

simply the poor execution of the simple skills that really determined the outcome of the match.

This week’s opponents, the Sharks are going to be a dangerous side as you just don’t know what Sharks outfit is going to turn up.

However previous weeks have shown that they can now score some points. With both sides travelling away from home to Bathurst, it should even things up and with several ex-Panthers in the opposition side there will be added spice to the clash and it should be considered a must win game if the Panthers are going to keep up with the premiership contenders There was a massive positive for junior development when the Tigers demolished the Bulldogs last week. These young players have been together from the junior reps and to see them all come together into first grade and perform the way they did was fantastic especially given they all play key positions in the game. It is this same outcome that the Panthers are looking towards achieving in the future and with the right nurturing and systems in place there is no reason why in a few years the percentage of home grown first grade players is not back up to the levels it was when success was achieved.

Jamie Soward has revealed the pain and embarrassment behind his departure from St George-Illawarra and

his newfound joy at the Panthers. In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph last weekend, Soward spoke of a meeting with Dragons coach Steve Price after a game last year, in which he was told it was “time to move on”. The story was a painfully honest one and worth reading if you didn’t catch it last weekend. On his relationship with Phil Gould, Soward said: “In one meeting, he got me excited about footy again. I hadn’t felt like that for a long time”.

It was a rare unhappy weekend for Penrith’s two lower grade teams after they both suffered losses at Allianz Stadium to the Roosters and Newtown Jets respectively.

A fiery contest took place in the Holden Cup with a number of sin-binnings during the match after a brawl (with punches)

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has admitted the side’s kicking game against the Roosters last weekend was below par. “I thought there was periods of the game that we were actually winning the battle of field position and we were starting to look likely, but if you let the air out of the tyres at the end of the set, then it encourages them. It has been a strong part of our game all year but without Pete (Wallace) there our balance isn’t quite the same,” he said.

Congratulations to Nigel Plum, who got into the spirit of Rise For Alex round last weekend by wearing a special Knights-themed headgear. The headgear is being auctioned off for the cause.

The future of Saturday afternoon football will obviously depend on television ratings, and the results so far are OK without being terrific for Fox Sports. The Roosters v Panthers match last weekend drew an audience of 193,000 on Fox Sports, significantly behind the two Saturday night matches which grabbed 244,000 (Storm v Raiders) and 232,000 (Broncos v Warriors).

Penrith could be set for a shake-up in the coaching ranks of the lower grades next season with both Garth Brennan and Trent Barrett looking the goods for roles elsewhere. There’s a little whisper doing the rounds that if the Titans do end up parting ways with John Cartwright, the former Panther could be back in town to fill one of the vacant roles.

Brennan is the most likely to depart. He still lives in Newcastle and commutes to Penrith through the week. A role with the Knights would suit him.

Penrith’s trip to Bathurst this week is about more than tomorrow’s game against the Sharks. The players have been fantastic in the lead-up to the game and have really connected with the local community. On Wednesday, upcoming junior NRL players had the chance to rub shoulders with Penrith Panthers players in an exciting rugby league development coaching clinic in Bathurst. Bathurst Mayor Gary Rush said the clinic was a great example of the kind of community benefits to be gained from bringing the big NRL match to town. “Council is committed to its focus of building the reputation of our city as a major sports event destination. This opportunity enables the broader community to benefit from some unique experiences that strengthen our ties with the sport and provide a fantastic opportunity for our young local kids,” he said.

Kevin Kingston against Newtown took place in the second half. Putting that fight aside, Penrith had a bigger fight on their hands against the fourth-placed Roosters who showed their class in the second half.

After being down 18-12 at the break, Penrith were well in the match at halftime and even levelled the scores at 18-all six minutes into the second half.

However, despite Penrith’s sniff at victory, it wasn’t to be with the Roosters scoring three unanswered tries to seal the game 32-18.

Meanwhile, the game of the afternoon (first grade included) was the match between Penrith’s NSW Cup side and the Newtown Jets.

The result looked settled with the Panthers up 30-6 early in the second half.

However, with the Panthers all tucked in for their usual second half cat nap, the Jets struck and struck and struck again to chase down Penrith’s whopping 24-point lead. A Panthers mistake from the kick-off at 30-30 saw Newtown’s Scott Dureau slot over the match-winning field goal to send the home crowd berserk.

The Panthers interactive museum was unveiled this week which embraces four interactive displays celebrating OUR GREATEST, OUR CLUB, OUR JUNIORS and OUR SCRAPBOOK. The museum will be open seven days a week and our clubs have provided much of the OUR JUNIORS photos and content.

Wow! Messages galore being sent out to our clubs about behaviour of our officials at games, yet still we receive a number of Incident Reports each week. What more can we tell you... RESPECT the kids, it’s their game.

Our young players learn from the adults in their lives including their parents, teachers and coaching staff – if a young player sees bad behaviour by adults they believe this is acceptable. Teaching kids the value of good sportsmanship goes a long way in shaping their character.

We are all here to grow the game and participate in such a great sport. To do this we need positive experiences within competitive sport. We all know that competitive sport can be emotional, however, we need to be able to balance between emotional and rational behaviour.

Last week I referred to the Jekyll and Hyde effect on adults. Our game would love to see more Mr Hyde’s than Dr Jekyll’s. We had a Mr Hyde experience in an U7s game – a great positive and a Dr Jekyll performance in an U10s game – a real negative. How can we achieve more positive experiences within our sport so we can count our negative experiences on one hand? We need your help!

On a positive note we are all looking forward to the upcoming final series games, we are aiming for all these games to be competitive and played in the right spirit. It starts with you.

e’s now the coach that looks certain to be the long-term leader at the Penrith Panthers, but there was plenty of conjecture over Ivan Cleary’s appointment at the Panthers when it was announced during a turbulent 2011 season.

On June 29, 2011, just weeks after giving Matt Elliott his marching orders and replacing him with interim coach Steve Georgallis, Phil Gould called a press conference at Panthers HQ. As the Weekender reported in its July 1 edition: “The turbulent year for the Penrith Panthers off the field in the NRL has continued, with Phil Gould dramatically naming Ivan Cleary as the club’s new head coach on Wednesday. Cleary’s appointment comes despite Steve Georgallis taking over as head coach from Matthew Elliott just last week. Georgallis was expected to be given at least a few weeks to prove he may be the man to take over permanently, but Gould was able to secure Cleary, leaving Georgallis out in the cold for next season.”

Gould spoke of how he was able to lure Cleary despite a contract being in place at the Warriors.

“He was on contract [with the Warriors] for the next 12 months and any discussions I had with Ivan were from 2013 and beyond,” Gould said.

“It’s only really been in the last 72 hours that this opportunity has presented itself. I thank the Warriors for their understanding in this.”

At the press conference, Gould was full of praise for Georgallis and said he expected the players to put in for him for the remainder of the season.

“Steve is going to be a very good coach,” he said.

“Any club who picks up Steve, if he is not at the Panthers, picks up a good man.”

It’s never been totally made clear why Cleary was keen to get out of his deal at the Warriors to take on one of the toughest tasks in the NRL, but it’s understood issues behind the scenes were causing him grief.

On the record at least, the Warriors were wishing him well.

“We’re excited for Ivan that he has this opportunity at this stage of his career and we’re grateful to him for the fantastic contribution he has made to the

Vodafone Warriors,” said CEO, Wayne Scurrah, after the announcement.

Majority shareholder at the time, Eric Watson, paid tribute to Cleary for his efforts for the club.

“We really appreciate all he has done in reviving the club and wish him all the best with Penrith. He’ll certainly be an asset for them,” Watson said.

Ironically, the Warriors would later end up with Matthew Elliott as their coach – but the relationship was not to last.

As for Cleary, he’s already extended his deal at the Panthers and his position is likely to remain unchallenged for many years to come.

Penrith forward Sika Manu is free to play this weekend Panthers forward Sika Manu has escaped suspension despite being charged by the NRL’s Match Review Committee following last weekend’s loss to the Roosters.

Manu was placed on report in the 34th minute of last weekend’s match after a high shot on Roosters five-eighth James Maloney.
