ISAAC JOHN SETS UP A PLAY AGAINST WESTS PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS

Chilly reception awaits I

N YEARS TO COME, last Sunday’s game against the Wests Tigers will be one most of us probably won’t remember. Just another game, in another season, with nothing particularly special about it. And it’s true – the match was a typical game of club footy, involving two western Sydney clubs, and the result didn’t go Penrith’s way. The truth is though that in the context of the 2013 season, that loss hurts. It was an opportunity for Penrith to solidify

RAIDERS ARE HOT It may be freezing cold down in Canberra at the moment but the Raiders are in some red hot form. Sure, they should have put Brisbane away better than they did on Monday night, but nobody would be complaining about a 12-point win against a team that boasts an impressive roster and, on their day, can be close to unbeatable. Canberra had a disruptive first few weeks of the season with the Josh Dugan drama dominating headlines, but have managed

produce some of the defensive lapses they did against the Tigers. A better side may have given the Panthers a bit of a football lesson last weekend. David Simmons is in career-best form but must remain totally switched on out wide, and the Panthers need to remain cool, calm and collected and not take the risk of rushing up out of the line, which happened a few times last weekend. If Penrith can keep their line in tact, as they did in their mighty defensive efforts against the Dragons,

Segeyaro has been one of Penrith’s best players this season and has been like dynamite when he comes on to the park. In some ways, it seemed like Segeyaro tried too hard last weekend, which can sometimes have the opposite effect to the result you’re looking for, and probably explains why he got into a little bit of trouble with the referees. Segeyaro is the kind of player that could really cause Canberra headaches this weekend. Let’s hope he does.

Penrith is the only side to have faced Josh Dugan twice this season, once against Canberra in the opening round and secondly against the Dragons last month their spot in the top eight, and to win in front of a massive crowd. Leading 18-4 against an injury-ravaged team coming last, the Panthers should have been able to close out the match with relative ease. It wasn’t to be, however, and Penrith learnt a valuable lesson about respecting the opposition. The big challenge for Penrith this weekend will be putting that loss behind them and returning to the kind of form that saw them win three games in a row in May.

to get themselves into a bit of a groove of late and whilst they have struggled to backup wins at times, they’ve certainly been competitive in the games they haven’t won of late.

DEFENCE IS THE KEY The Tigers’ match-winning try last weekend came from some poor defence out wide, and Penrith will be most certainly be caught with their pants down if they

Warriors and Melbourne, then Canberra may find it hard to score points.

THE SEGEYARO DIFFERENCE James Segeyaro produced an incredible try-saving tackle last weekend, but in attack, was a little quieter than usual. His incredible spark off the bench will be crucial against Canberra on Saturday, as there’s little doubt that the Raiders can sometimes struggle to contain sides with attacking flair.

THE FINAL WORD Penrith can beat Canberra but they must go back to the style of game they played against the Dragons, Warriors and Storm. It was a style that saw a committed, 80 minute effort, and that’s something that was lacking last weekend. At 18-4, Penrith switched off. Switching off against Canberra will have similar fatal results not just for this game, but potentially the season. EXTRATIME | 3

DEAN WHARE IS ENJOYING HIS NEW ROLE PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Dean’s the centre of attention AFTER STRUGGLING AT FULLBACK FOR THE FIRST PART OF THE SEASON, NEW RECRUIT DEAN WHARE SAYS HE’S LOVING THE SWITCH TO CENTRE AND IS READY FOR A STRONG END TO THE YEAR...

P

ANTHERS CENTRE DEAN WHARE admits his side’s season did a complete 180 the moment new blood was introduced and crucial changes were made to key positions – including his. The 23-year-old began his first five games as a Panther in the coveted fullback position, previously occupied by Michael Gordon and injured five-eighth Lachlan Coote. Even though Whare spent most of his time

at his former club, Manly, filling in at the back for the injured Brett Stewart, he never felt or looked comfortable when wearing the number one jumper at Penrith. “I think naturally I wasn’t a fullback; centre is my position,” Whare told Extra Time. “The move to centre has probably helped my form over the past month or so. I couldn’t score a try to save my life at fullback but have a couple now in the centres, also

my defence has picked up.” The New Zealand international believes his combination with the newly re-signed David Simmons and fellow Kiwi Sika Manu has made him a better player. “I’m working well with David Simmons, he’s in the best form of his career at the moment,” Whare said. “Sika is another experienced player who knows the game well. He’s won premierships and played internationals and has been a big help to me.” Whare admitted the decision to move him from fullback to centre was a “mutual one” between him and coach Ivan Cleary.

The decision proved a masterstroke because it earned wonder boy Matt Moylan a first grade call-up. “I think our season changed for the better after that Newcastle game where we lost 8-6 plus my shift to centre and young Moyza and Isaac John coming into the team,” Whare said. Whare said Cleary is ensuring the team continues to stay grounded despite their recent positive form and also embraces their underdog tag. “Being underdogs doesn’t bother us because it gives us more confidence and motivation,” he said.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

Tough times at the Eels 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

T

HAT PUNCH! EVEN BEING a staunch New South Welshman, Paul Gallen was totally in the wrong and was very lucky that he was not sin binned for 10 minutes. Regardless of what Nate Myles had done previously, the fact was Gallen hit him with a cheap swinging arm in the tackle then proceeded to throw the first, second and third punch. At no point was he in the right and given the way QLD came back at NSW, if he had left his team with 12 men for 10 minutes I believe this could have meant a completely different result for NSW at full time. I played with big Gordon Tallis and his reputation as a hard man is totally warranted.

His comments this week though are a bit tongue in cheek as I clearly remember a game at Penrith Stadium where he belted Ben Ross black and blue due to some remarks Ben made in the paper that week trying to push his claims as a young front rower for QLD Origin selection. Trust me, it was nothing to do with what happened during the game or what Ben said, he was always going to explode. I personally believe the way Parramatta delivered the news to its players about not being wanted next year stunk of the attitude of a frustrated coach. Players have failed to deliver results on the field and their performance in Mudgee was

the final straw in what was deemed to be a lack of respect to the coach. Thus it was at this point that it was decided to inform the players of their position at the club. I think it was the easy option to deliver the news rather than have to sit down and explain individually with each player and the emotions that I am sure would have presented in such conversations. The question we will have to wait until next year to be answered is whether Parramatta have the ability to replace these players as I believe the quality players they need are not available on the market, so does that mean they don’t spend near their salary cap for 2014 looking to 2015 and beyond?

Kitchen kings CLINT NEWTON AND JAMES SEGEYARO SHOWED THEIR SKILLS OFF THE FIELD WHEN THEY WERE LET LOOSE IN THE KITCHEN LAST WEEK...

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

JAMES SEGEYARO AND CLINT NEWTON AT WORK PHOTOS: MELINDA JANE

ANTHERS STARS CLINT NEWTON and James Segeyaro swapped their jerseys for aprons last week, lending support to students competing in the Panthers on the Prowl Nepean Schools Masterchef Competition. Taking place in the kitchen of Outback Steakhouse in Penrith, Year 10 students from three local high schools – Nepean High, Glenmore Park High and Kingswood High – battled it out in a final cook-off serving up some of Outback Steakhouse’s signature dishes. Newton, who described himself as a “frustrated chef”, said the Panthers on the Prowl Masterchef Competition was a tremendous community initiative. “It’s important kids take part in this competition and have a go at cooking because they might go home and help mum and dad out more – that would be the best outcome,” he said. The popular second-rower and his sidekick Segeyaro learnt how to toss a Caesar salad, grill a piece of tender chicken and whip up a creamy fettuccine pasta. Newton revealed he didn’t mind cooking from time to time especially when whipping up his favourite dish. “I enjoy cooking but I personally think there’s no better cook than my mum,” he said. “I myself enjoy cooking chili and garlic prawn pasta with tomato mixed through it. You also can’t beat a barbie with potato bake and vegetables either.” Segeyaro, a well-known lover of food, admitted he took care of the cooking at his place.

“I do most of the cooking in my house because my missus only knows how to do toast,” he said. “I did cook banana cake last night, which wasn’t too bad, but my favourite dish to serve up is salmon and asparagus with salad.” Panthers on the Prowl Project Officer, Graham Collins, thanked proprietor Mike Hicks and Outback Steakhouse for lending their kitchen for the competition, now in its third year. “We’re very appreciative because the competition gives kids an awareness of the careers they can have in the food industry,” he said. For the record, your humble journalist was fortunate enough to demolish what Newton and Segeyaro prepared and it was phenomenal – Matt Preston would be proud of the finished product!

Let Matt play ONE OF THE RISING STARS OF THE PANTHERS MAY BE BLOCKED FROM PLAYING FIRST GRADE FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON...

T

STORY BY TROY DODDS

PANTHERS STAR MATT MOYLAN

HE NRL IS BEING urged to change a rule that could prevent superstar fullback Matt Moylan from playing first grade again this year. Under a confusing and bizarre rule, Moylan will be forced to play reserve grade for the rest of the season despite being one of the club’s brightest prospects. Because Moylan is not in Penrith’s top 25 squad, he features as part of a second tier salary cap, which the Panthers have already exceeded because of a crippling injury crisis. The NRL refused to give the Panthers an exemption to play Moylan against the Tigers last Sunday and instead, the 21-year-old played for Windsor against Newtown. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is angry about the situation and urged the NRL to act. “It’s really disappointing – it’s without commonsense, that’s how I would describe it,” Cleary told Extra Time. “It is a big thing what we’re trying to do – we’re trying to give young players opportunities and the way the current rules are, it’s pretty much designed for you to pick a top 25 and they’re the ones you’re supposed to play your whole season with – what does that say to a young guy?” Panthers General Manager Phil Gould is equally frustrated, saying on Sunday that the NRL had essentially told the club that in its opinion, the Panthers had 17 healthy players from the top 25 who could cover all positions, hence Moylan could not play. “On Friday, acting salary cap auditor Jamie L’Oste Brown delivered instructions to Panthers such as, ‘Why not play Geoff Daniela at centre and either Dean Whare or David Simmons at fullback’ or ‘Just play

Naiqama at fullback and see how that goes’,” Gould wrote in his column for The Sun Herald. “Right there, we see the arrogance and control with which this department of the NRL treats clubs. Firstly, who gave the salary cap auditor the right to start telling coaches who they should select in their teams and what positions they should play? “We are not playing ‘tiddly-winks’ here. This is supposed to be a professional sporting code. These careers are extremely important to these individuals. Winning is so important to the business models of our 16 NRL clubs. Having the salary cap auditor instruct a club to move players around to non-specialist positions, just to ‘see how that goes’, is surely the height of naivety and amateurism. Secondly, this insensitive instruction totally misses the point of the whole dilemma. “What about Matt Moylan? A local junior who has battled his way through the junior systems and served his time in the NSW Cup, waiting and hoping to fulfil his dreams of playing in the NRL. A young man who is on an extremely meagre salary, well short of the minimum wage; and who earns an extra $3000 with every appearance he makes in the top grade. What about his future and his development as a player?” Cleary is hopeful that the NRL will see sense and allow Moylan to play. “We’re pretty hopeful that the NRL will actually come to their senses and sort this out,” Cleary said. “Hopefully we can get rid of this antiquated, ridiculous system that we’ve currently got.”

I’ll play for 80 JAMES SEGEYARO SAYS HE’S READY TO FILL THE VOID LEFT BY KEVIN KINGSTON WHEN HE DEPARTS THE CLUB AT SEASON’S END...

P

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

JAMES SEGEYARO IN ACTION PHOTOS: MELINDA JANE

ENRITH EXCITEMENT MACHINE JAMES Segeyaro has declared he's ready to be an 80-minute player next year, if current starting hooker and captain Kevin Kingston leaves the club as expected. Segeyaro has started off the bench for the Panthers all season but said he's always aspired to take on a full-time role. "Being a consistent first-grader is something I've always wanted to work towards my whole career," he told Extra Time. "It's unfortunate that the club doesn't want Kevvie because he's a great leader and a great captain but I would've been all for it if the club did still want him. "Unfortunately that's the game these days, that's the way it is. I'm happy if Ivan and Gus have trust in me to be the '9' next year." The 22-year-old former Cowboy has been Penrith's stand-out performer after 13 rounds but admitted his side were "out-enthused" during their narrow 20-18 loss to the Wests Tigers last Sunday. "Every ball that was dropped the Tigers were jumping on it, they were really enthusiastic," Segeyaro said. "I think we just thought they'd go away but they just kept coming and then at the end they got us in that defensive lapse." Going into the game the Panthers were flying high, having won three in a row with defence being the key in those hat-trick of victories. The Tigers on the other hand were said to be a mess – down on form, down on troops – and according to Segeryaro, the Panthers believed that too. “We didn't have enough respect for them,"

he said. "We just have to put that game behind us and keep up the momentum we had over the last few weeks." Segeyaro believes the late withdrawals of boom fullback Matt Moylan (salary cap) and prop Tim Grant (broken hand) didn't affect their psyche going into the match. "Not really, we've got players, our depth is first class – our second grade team could play first grade," he said. “What happened to Moylan was very unfair, I never knew that rule existed, it's an ancient rule. The NRL need to brush it because it half ruins our chances. He's a young, great prospect that's been killing it.”

A NIP OF BRANDY WITH GREG ALEXANDER

Problem without a solution PANTHERS legend Greg Alexander helped the club to its first ever premiership in 1991. He now works for 2UE, Fox Sports and Betfair.

W

HAT IS THE MAGIC pudding solution to the age old debate of State of Origin versus club football? We’ve tried it all. Stand alone Origin weekends which saw the fans howling about the lack of club footy, and the current situation which prompts cries from the punters that their club is being too severely disadvantaged by the presence of their players in representative jumpers. I think the current scenario is the best one. Sure, we miss the best players in the week prior to Origin matches but we still get a mix of NRL and Origin football. There’s also something inspiring in watching Origin players backing up for their club teams only days after the hardest game of their career. It’s that ability to lift, physically and mentally, which separates Origin players from the rest. The heart of the Melbourne Storm, Smith, Slater and Cronk come to mind.

One area we need to closely look at is the possibility of salary cap relief for clubs who lose players during representative games. While most of us can tolerate the demands placed on players to back up from rep games, I can understand people going spare when they lose a club star during Origin. What exacerbates that is the restrictions around the second tier salary cap, which covers players based outside the top 25. If a club loses a key player during representative duties, surely they must be entitled to some relief to replace that player without risking breaking the cap? There’s obvious inequity in that. Another hot topic of the last fortnight has been the so called ‘Cannonball’ tackle, which has captured the headlines in the wake of the serious ankle injury suffered by Newcastle’s Alex McKinnon. There is genuine danger when the third man in attacks the legs of a standing

defender with excessive force. The issue is, how do we determine what excessive force is when a player is still moving, and standing upright? Players at all ages are told to put the ball carrier on the ground. It is a vital tactic to provide the defence sufficient time to regroup. We are asking a great deal of referees to make a subjective call on whether a defender has attacked the legs with inappropriate, excessive force. Sometimes it’s blatantly obvious, other times not so much. Should the referee call ‘held’ earlier? We know what the inevitable outcome would be if that became law – an attacker would get the arm free and pop a pass to a support player, who would have their try called back. Again, sometimes we can’t win. Enjoy your footy and get pumped up for Origin II.

E HAS BEEN IN career-best form but I can reveal today how close Nigel Plum actually came to leaving the Panthers. In fact, just a week ago, Plum was looking likely to leave the club, with a number of other offers on the table. However, the Panthers came in with the offer the big fella was looking for and he’s signed for the next two years. Someone unlikely to be around next year, however, is Clint Newton. I am positive the club wants to keep Newton around in an off-field role, but he may look for a season elsewhere.

at Penrith Stadium last Sunday. Both are on track to make comebacks this year, and Coote in particular is expected to defy original predictions and play well before the end of the season.

I’ve sent Tim Grant a text with the number 13 11 22, so he can save it in his phone. That’s the number for NRMA roadside assistance and Grant should call it next time the need to change a tyre arises. Incredibly, changing a tyre is how Grant broke his hand, forcing him out of last Sunday’s clash against the Tigers. It’s likely Grant will miss a few more weeks because of the injury.

It seems Penrith-bound Jamie Soward could play out the rest of the season in England, before returning to the Panthers in November. Soward was dropped from the Dragons’ first grade squad and it seems he may struggle to find his way back into the team. A move to England would allow Soward to clear his head and come back to Australia with a new, fresh attitude in November.

I’m hearing that Canberra attempted to poach Panthers skipper Kevin Kingston mid-season. It would have been tempting for Kingston, as he is looking for a new club next season, but he will stick around and play out the rest of the year with the Panthers. Both Sam McKendry and Lachlan Coote looked to be in good health when spotted

There’s been a bit of talk about the way one injured player spoke to a fan after Sunday’s loss to the Tigers. The player, reportedly, wasn’t all that concerned about the loss – and didn’t think the unhappy fan should have been, either. It wasn’t a good look.

Social media can get plenty of people into trouble, and if he’s not careful, Daily Telegraph reporter Phil Rothfield will be one of them. Buzz, who is desperately hoping his Cronulla Sharks one day win the premiership he’s waited a lifetime for, is skating on fairly thin ice with his constant criticism of Phil Gould and the Panthers.

CANBERRA HAS ONLY LOST ONE HOLDEN CUP MATCH ALL SEASON, AND IT HAPPENED TO BE AGAINST THE PANTHERS. THIS WEEKEND, PENRITH IS HOPING THAT HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF... ENRITH’S HOLDEN CUP TEAM will be looking to edge their way back on top of the table this weekend when they take on the competition leading Canberra Raiders this Saturday afternoon. The second-placed Panthers are currently in red hot form after they defeated the 2012 NYC Premiers, Wests Tigers, last Sunday afternoon 50-12. Speaking with Extra Time, Panthers NYC coach David Tangata-Toa said Sunday’s win was Penrith’s most pleasing of the season. “Considering they were last year’s premiers and were tipped as favourites at the start of this year, it was a very pleasing performance,” he said. “The Tigers are a team that like to attack. They throw the ball around a lot and to hold them to only 12 points was a real good effort and showed great attitude.” Panthers halfback Toby Evans was instrumental in Penrith’s win, taking the line on and setting up several tries. Kieran Moss, in his second game back from a stint in the NSW Cup, was also very effective. “Ever since Kieran’s come back from the

Wolves I challenged him to keep playing like a NSW Cup player, even though he was playing in the 20’s, and he’s done that the last couple of weeks,” Tangata-Toa said. “Toby Evans is definitely steering us around really well and we’re a better team with him in it.” This Saturday afternoon the Panthers will face their toughest task thus far when they meet a Canberra Raiders side who have only dropped one game this season – funnily enough to the Panthers in round one. “We have to be at our best, they are a pretty well-balanced team and that’s what makes them such a threat,” Tangata-Toa said. “We need all of our 17 playing at our best to be in with a shot. Canberra’s halves are good and they have plenty of strike out wide plus some handy forwards that carry the ball strongly.” Tangata-Toa admitted he’s looking forward to the clash because it will provide him with a strong insight as to where his team sits against the competition’s best. “They haven’t lost a game since round one, they are the benchmark,” he said.

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER

The night Gordie and Gal went head to head EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

T

HERE WAS NO LOVE lost between Gorden Tallis and Paul Gallen on last week’s episode of ‘The Footy Show’. In the aftermath of a spiteful State of Origin Game I, fans were treated to a showdown between the former Maroons’ great and the current NSW captain. In light of Gallen’s polarising performance which featured left-right combinations for the ages, ‘The Raging Bull’ was making the most of his face time with the Blues enforcer. When asked about the incident Gallen denied any wrong doing. “What happens on the field stays on the field,” he said. “Earlier in the game, Nate twisted my knee in a tackle and we had words … It was going to happen and I just got in there before he did.” Gorden Tallis responded with a flurry

of his own, launching a war of words with the proud Blues skipper. Tallis: “He pushed you because you gave him a swinging arm” Gal: “We don’t get up and push Nate Myles when he headbutts us in a tackle do we?” Tallis: “Has he ever headbutted you in a tackle?” Gal: “He has” Tallis: “Then why didn’t you do it then? You waited until there was two people on him and gave him a swinging arm” Gal: “What do you mean two people on him? We stood toe-to-toe, either he was going to hit me or I was going to hit him, and I hit him first” Tallis: “He had his hands by his side” Gal: “I had my hands by my side too” Gallen didn’t back down from a challenge and persisted in pushing Big

Gordie’s buttons, with Tallis and fellow Queenslander Billy Slater shooting daggers toward the rather chuffed NSW captain. State of Origin and controversy go hand in hand, toss in a fiery ‘Footy Show’ panellist and you’ve got a battle for the ages. With game two just around the corner, expect even harder-hitting questions and more provocative panel chat in further weeks. Your first stop for State of Origin debate. The Footy Show, Thursdays 8.30pm on Channel Nine. Catch up on anything you’ve missed online at www.footyshow.com.au or check out www.facebook.com/ NRLFootyShow. JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE WITH YVONNE PURTELL

Finding the right balance YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and Districtt Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent Although last weekend saw a bye in the junior league for many teams, there were still quite a few games scheduled following some washed out games with the recent wet weather. The Junior League worked on one of the most difficult aspects of the competitions last week, the regrading of teams. As there are over 500 teams in the junior league we deal with a lot of emotion by coaches, players, parents and other club officials at this time. Not all teams will be placed where they believe they should be, but as a committee you are faced with the difficulty of finding the right balance. One of the biggest challenges for a club is to ensure that coaches remain positive and encourage their players to improve their skills… it is not all about winning and losing. All enquiries regarding the regrading of teams must go through your club secretary. We now move into the second half of the competition, can you believe it’s only a few weeks to go and we move into the final series games? 16 | EXTRATIME

On another note, the NRL squad, following their game on Sunday made themselves available last Monday for the third junior league clinic. There was a great representation by the invited clubs on this public holiday. The kids enjoyed the clinic activities run by the players and NRL Development Officers and then their family members joined them for a signing session. Heat 2 of the Junior League relay was held last weekend with Heat 3 being held on June 29 where the top two teams will move into the final where Brothers, St Marys, Glenmore Park and St Clair await them. The Junior League Relay final is scheduled for Sunday, July 21 at Centrebet Stadium. Congratulations to a number of ladies who play in the Women’s Rugby League competition in our district who were recently selected in the City squad. Well done ladies! Good luck to all juniors playing rugby league this weekend. Keep your head up high and keep enjoying your football!
