The battle of the big cats A

ROOKIE COACH, AN horrific injury toll and an out-of-form superstar – it’s safe to say that times haven’t been easy for the Wests Tigers. In fact, things are a lot different now than they were just three months ago when the Tigers beat the Panthers at Campbelltown Stadium in their first meeting of the season. It was a tough day at the office for the Panthers, who lost Lachlan Coote with a pectoral injury that would put an untimely end to his season.

“We just need to go into the game fully prepared and just worry about ourselves.” Newton knows that Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah are big threats for the Tigers, but said Penrith needed to concentrate on their own game and not worry too much about the opposition. “We can only control how we prepare and if we’re doing all the right things at training, we can go into the game confident in our ability, but respectful of who we are playing against,” Newton said.

“We’ve been the underdogs in all the other games we’ve been in, so this is kind of a different game for us.” Despite winning three games in a row, the Panthers still haven’t totally convinced all rugby league followers that they’re a legitimate finals chance, so victory this Sunday is critical in not only staying inside the top eight, but proving to the doubters that the Panthers deserve to be respected in the second half of the season. A big win would certainly achieve that.

will be hoping that captain Robbie Farah got through Wednesday night’s Origin OK and will play on Sunday.

THE FINAL WORD The Tigers got some much-needed confidence with a win over the Cowboys prior to last weekend’s bye, meaning both these sides have something to feel good about heading into kickoff on Sunday. The Panthers are on such a roll, that it’s hard to see the under-strength Tigers ending

Penrith forward Sika Manu plays his 100th first grade game this weekend. Manu joined the Panthers from the Melbourne Storm at the start of the 2013 season This Sunday, Penrith have an opportunity for revenge.

FIRST TIME FAVOURITES Sunday’s clash against the Tigers will mark the first time this season that Penrith has been favourites for a match, but for forward Clint Newton, it won’t be a factor. “I don’t really read anything into previous form – I think this competition is closer than what some people think it is,” Newton said.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

ORIGIN PLAYS A ROLE

After a 19-0 win over the Dragons in their last hitout, there’s no doubt now that Penrith is not flying under the radar. Now sitting in the top eight, the Panthers are emerging as a surprise packet of the competition. Forward Mose Masoe knows just how much that changes things. “It’s always easier going into the game as the underdog – it makes it a bit easier for your mindset,” he said.

Tim Grant would be bitterly disappointed to miss out on Origin selection but the Blues’ loss could well be Penrith’s gain should Grant fire up and show Laurie Daley and the selectors what they missed out on. Grant has been in and out of form this year but has been making some big metres in Penrith’s most recent victories, and he’ll need to fire up again this weekend. On the other side of the fence, the Tigers

their winning run this round. However, if Benji finds his mojo, and if the Panthers show even for one moment that they’re taking the match for granted, things will turn sour pretty quickly. Staying focused and switched on is the big key for Penrith. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary publicly said he felt the bye came at the right time for his troops. We can only hope the confidence gained from three consecutive wins remains at a high come Sunday at 3.00pm. EXTRATIME | 3

IVAN CLEARY, SIMON MELI AND KEVIN KINGSTON AT PENRITH STADIUM

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Raising his Voice for Penrith THE PANTHERS TOOK A LITTLE TIME OUT TO MEET WITH ONE OF THE MUSIC WORLD’S RISING STARS LAST WEEK, WHEN SIMON MELI FROM ‘THE VOICE’ CAME BY TO SIGN UP AS A MEMBER...

F

OOTY PLAYERS ARE USUALLY the ones signing autographs and getting photos taken with fans, but it was a very different story at Penrith Stadium last week. The tables were turned last Friday when long-time Penrith fan and ‘The Voice’ contestant Simon Meli visited a Panthers morning training session. Meli, born and bred in Penrith, was mobbed by players for photos and

autographs, with all of them wanting a piece of the ‘Team Ricky’ contestant. “I started supporting the Panthers when I was a lot younger and I was fortunate enough to witness the 1991 Grand Final,” Meli told Extra Time. The popular contestant said it was “his privilege” to be around athletes who were working their backsides off to make their dream a reality.

“We have similar values and similar regimes that we’ve got to keep in mind for the common goal at the end,” Meli said. Meli moved out of the Penrith area more than a year ago to live closer to the city where he would often perform in pubs and clubs while he chased his music dream. The 35-year-old said despite moving out of Penrith he still proudly represents the west and hopes to help eradicate people’s perceptions of the area. “Having a chat with some of the players, we have a similar feeling that we want to change the stigma that there is of western Sydney,” Meli said.

“There should be no shame in saying you are from Penrith or from the surrounding suburbs.” After Meli was bombarded with questions from Panthers second-rower Clint Newton for 25 minutes, he was finally presented with a signed Panthers jersey, cap and season membership from Ivan Cleary and Kevin Kingston. Unfortunately, Meli was eliminated from ‘The Voice’ on Monday night, but his music dream is still well and truly alive. Meli credited his remarkable ride in the talent show to his coach, music superstar Ricky Martin.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

The gloss is wearing off at Brisbane 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

I

WAS DOWN WATCHING the trials for the CCC NSW schoolboys side last week when I ran into an ex-Brisbane Broncos official from my time at the club. We discussed many things that included the Broncos and how things have certainly changed since I was at the club, but more importantly since Wayne Bennett had left. The question begs as to how long Anthony Griffin (pictured) has before questions are asked of him regarding the lack of success that the Broncos are having recently. Brisbane used to only target the best young players to go through their system and it was rare to find such a player that would consider leaving Queensland.

My contact said these days they are grabbing a whole heap of kids and the view now is that being in the Broncos system doesn’t mean all that much. Thus it is now easy for clubs outside of Queensland to entice players of good potential to leave. Monday’s match against the Warriors was a good point in question. While the Broncos were down on players, we have become accustomed to the “baby Broncos” always playing with spirit and showing pride in their performances. This was not the case against NZ, especially given they played in front of their home crowd, and I think it highlights that the next batch of Broncos coming through are a fair way off the mark to that of their predecessors.

Priddo’s Point proudly supported by Heartland Penrith

Players used to take less money to stay at the Broncos because of the fact that they knew each year they were going to be playing semi-final footy and a realistic chance of a title. Recruiting Scott Prince no doubt was a major factor in Corey Norman going to the Eels next year. Given the time invested in him as the potential successor to Darren Lockyer, to then be shifted out of that position to accommodate Prince would not have happened in the past. Bennett and his team would have worked hard to ensure Norman had every opportunity to deliver the potential that had him earmarked in the first instance.

PANTHERS COACH IVAN CLEARY PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

Coach Cleary cracks a smile THE OFTEN STONY-FACED IVAN CLEARY IS SMILING, AND SO IS THE REST OF HIS TEAM, AFTER THREE STRAIGHT WINS AND A FEELING THAT MORE SUCCESS IS TO COME IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON... Over the past six weeks Penrith have won four out of five games and everyone at Panthers headquarters is smiling and enjoying their footy. “Apart from winning, a happy environment is almost the most important thing,” Cleary told Extra Time. “With whatever job you’re in you want everyone to be happy and working together, that’s something we strive for here and the

ARE YOU CARWISE?

You could also say the impressive run of victories comes down to the new and enthusiastic blood added to the squad through injuries. Players like the recently re-signed Matt Moylan, Isaac John and Mose Masoe have been a revelation. “As soon as those three guys have come in, wins have come with it, so you can’t say that’s no coincidence,” he said. The next challenge for Cleary is working with club officials to decide which offcontract players to retain for next year. “It’s always hard, it’s a moving beast recruitment and retention, there’s no super formula for it,” Cleary admitted.

YEAR IS A long time in rugby league, heck even a week seems like a lifetime these days, but the turnaround seen at Penrith over the past 12 months has to make anyone smile – even the coach. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary and boss Phil Gould have copped it from all corners over the past year for “big” decisions made, that will in the long run, get the team to where they want to be – a force in the NRL.

environment we try and create.” The happy environment off the field is doing wonders for the Panthers’ form on it. Cleary said consistency and confidence were the key ingredients of their mid-season revival that has pushed them into the top 8. “Our ball control has been good and our defence has been stronger for longer,” he said. “The boys are also starting to take ownership themselves, which is exactly what you want to see. “We’re getting somewhere, the team is working together and as long as we keep doing that I’m sure we’ll keep competing.”

A

REMINDER TO OUR junior league family of players, officials and supporters that at times there is a need to cancel games due to the wet weather. No council, junior league official or club representative makes these decisions lightly. There are a lot of factors which come into decisions such as this and these include the safety of the players, the condition of the grounds and the long-term damage playing in wet weather can have on the fields for the remainder of the season. No team who has been affected by wet weather will be disadvantaged as those games already lost have been rescheduled.

Any other registered player from these clubs is also welcome to attend the signing session following the clinic. See your club secretary for full details. This Sunday at the Panthers v Wests Tigers game we will see Heat 2 of the Junior League Relay with Brothers, Doonside, Hawkesbury City, Minchinbury, Quakers Hill, Western City Tigers, St Clair and St Patricks vying for the two spots in the final. The Junior League would like to congratulate Oliver Clark, David Cowhan, Naya Freeman, Soni Hala, Robert Jennings, Soni Luke, Peter Tiatia, Sione Utia-Katoa and Dallin Watene Zelezniak on their selection in the U18s CCC State team; and Mitchell Butfield, Ben Cartwright, Mose Feilo, Jake Gillett, Ray Maroun, Jonah Metunagaro and Samuel Radovu for their selection in the U15 CCC State team.

THIS WEEKEND’S NRL SCHEDULE

OOK OUT DEAN RITCHIE, Phil Rothfield or any other NRL journalists out there. Clint Newton has declared himself ready for a step into the media, with a 25 minute grilling of ‘The Voice’ star Simon Meli last Friday at a Panthers training session (pictured). Newton was in fine form, firing off questions to the music star on the rise, and probing him on all the juicy details from behind the scenes of the hit TV show. Based on his efforts, Newto will make a fine journo when he hangs up the boots. Rumours spread this week that Jamie Soward could be on his way to Penrith immediately, after his form at the Dragons continued to slip last weekend. He was given time off training at St George-Illawarra this week to “clear his head”, sparking speculation an immediate transfer was in the works. The Panthers have denied this, and say Soward will be joining the side in November for preseason training as planned. The Windsor Wolves play Newtown this Sunday in the NSW Cup but in a scheduling

LUKE PRIDDIS

disaster, the game is on at the same time as the NRL clash between Penrith and the Tigers. Hopefully the Panthers will provide score updates at Penrith Stadium, but you would think that with advanced scheduling in place this year, a blunder like this wouldn’t have happened in the first place. Congratulations to big Sika Manu, who plays his 100th first grade game on Sunday. I’m hearing that if Centrebet walked in the door and told Panthers they wanted to walk away from their stadium naming rights deal, that the club wouldn’t stand in their way. It’s always been awkward to have a gambling website splashed all over the stadium, and the Panthers are mindful of the possible negativities of the deal. Centrebet has also been through some changes lately, so don’t be surprised if there is indeed movement on this before their contract expires. Spotted: Panthers forward Clint Newton taking in a movie at Hoyts Penrith on a wet Sunday afternoon last weekend.

CLINT NEWTON INTERVIEWS ‘THE VOICE’ STAR SIMON MELI

L O W E R G R A D E S F E AT U R E S T O R Y

A work in progress DESPITE A SUCCESSFUL FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON, WOLVES COACH GARTH BRENNAN SAYS HIS SIDE ISN’T QUITE PLAYING THE WAY HE’D LIKE THEM TO BE, BUT HAS PRAISED THE TEAM’S DEFENCE IN RECENT MATCHES...

T

HE WINDSOR WOLVES ARE finally showing what a team chock full of NRL stars can do in the NSW Cup. Last week’s Wolves line-up featured a whopping 11 first-graders, who did the job easily on a fairly inexperienced Wests Tigers outfit 28-12. Windsor coach Garth Brennan praised his side’s defence and enthusiasm over the past few weeks. “Defensively, we are starting to show signs of a team that I know we can be,” he said. “As far as our attack goes we are a work in progress. The guys are trying hard, probably a bit too hard, but we just need to execute better. I’m not expecting that to happen overnight because attack takes a little bit of time.” Brennan said there was a number of standouts during his side’s big win over the Tigers but none moreso than newcomer Bryce Cartwright, who took out the Player’s Player award.

VAIPUNA TIA-KILIFI PHOTO: ROB SHEELEY

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

“Bryce has really come on in leaps and bounds,” he said. “He’s been outstanding and really risen to the next level and risen to the challenge. We always knew Bryce had plenty of potential but I think he’s relishing the challenge he’s got at the moment.” Brennan believed consistency was the only thing standing in the way of Cartwright cementing a regular spot in Windsor or moving back to the Holden Cup. “You can be inconsistent in the NYC but when you get to the NSW Cup and NRL you need to be consistent and that’s what Bryce needs to find,” he said. “We all know he’s got an immense amount of potential but he needs to be able to find those performances on a regular basis to be able to stay up there and continue his progression.” This Sunday the Wolves travel to the NSW country town of Parkes to take on defending NSW Cup Premiers, Newtown.

E MAY NOT BE a superstar, but David Simmons has been super reliable for Penrith this season, and has been a mainstay of the side during the rocky few years that have just gone past. Much like many of the bombs he catches, his long term future was up in the air – he was off contract at the end of the season. But Simmons’ good form has been rewarded, with the winger signing a new two-year deal with the club this week. Congratulations, David!

THE FOOTY SHOW INSIDER

How to watch The Footy Show EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

I

N LIGHT OF LAST week’s Do’s and Don’ts, The Footy Show Insider is bulking up its ‘how to’ guide. This week we want to give you a few tips to enhance your Thursday night indulgence. Here’s what will keep you on top during ‘The Footy Show’… Always: * Jump-In to Jump-In. Download the app to have your say on ‘The Footy Show’ polls, check out our social media pages and watch exclusive behind the scenes vision. Production boy is always scheming on set to get you the best. * Closely observe ‘Beau Knows’. Not only could he be coming to an area near yours, it is a certainty that the resident funny man will be teaching you something you didn’t know about the world. * Stay watching for Crack-A-Fatty. The Fat Phone could be dialling your

number next. Remember to always ‘go to bed with the fat’! Sometimes: * Be surprised during Perfect Partners, you never know what some of the NRL’s elite get up to. Beau Ryan’s nightly kiss is a definite head-turner. * Gain a little bit of wisdom from the colourful kids in Small Talk. We can all take something away from the Big Marn’s inquisitive look into the minds of 10-year-olds. * Beware of JT during Player Probe. Johnathan Thurston’s cackling laugh can pop up anytime, anywhere. Never: * Take your eyes off footy chat. SBWTV can drop into your screen at any time. Don’t forget about the other millionaire-backed television identities; SBTV, and BTV have been known to intercept signals at will.

* Be afraid to tell us what has got you outraged. The Big Marn is always one to share his opinion. Never back down from the debate. * Take a toilet break during play. No fines apply, however you will be missing award-winning television. Hold it in and hurry back. Always entertaining, sometimes scandalous and never disappointing, ‘The Footy Show’ airs on Thursdays at 8.30pm on Channel Nine. Catch up on anything you’ve missed online at www.footyshow.com.au. Visit us on the socials at www. facebook.com/NRLFootyShow or on Twitter @thefootyshownrl.

This week’s Team Line-ups

B

IG MOSE MASOE SAYS this weekend’s game against the Tigers is a dangerous one for his in-form side. The Tigers are sitting on the bottom of the competition table but Masoe believes that only makes them hungrier. “The Tigers will be the most dangerous side we have played in the last four weeks,” he declared. “They’ve got good strikepower in their team across the board.” Masoe declared the first 20 minutes would be crucial this Sunday. “We’ve just got to go in with the same mindset as every other game,” he said. A crowd of 15,000 is expected for the Sunday afternoon battle between the two western Sydney clubs. The Tigers beat the Panthers earlier this season at Campbelltown Stadium, but have only won three matches this season and have the worst defensive record in the NRL.
