Pre-game boost EXCITING YOUNG PENRITH WINGER Josh Mansour celebrated the start of the season with a new contract. Mansour, the club’s Rookie of the Year in 2012, has extended his deal with Penrith through to the end of the 2014 season. “Josh is an exciting young player, who has impressed with his tenacity since making his first grade debut last year,” said Panthers General Manager of Football, Phil Moss, who added that the club was delighted he had re-signed.

PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS

First-up win is critical for Penrith T

HERE IS AN OLD quote that goes something like, “win as if you were used to it, lose as if you enjoyed it for a change”. Confidence can be an amazing key to ultimate success, and there can be no greater confidence-boost for the Penrith Panthers than to win their opening round clash with Canberra on Sunday afternoon. A win in round one provides hope, a loss provides the longest seven days possible with a whole heap of concern about what could be ahead next week, and for the rest of the season. After coming through the trials undefeated, Penrith has every reason to feel that they can topple the Raiders on Sunday. Both of these sides find themselves low in the ladder calculations of most experts this year, so the team that wins is hardly going to create front page stories. But there can be little doubt that for the players and the fans, the two points mean something very important. Almost your entire off-season is building towards round one, and victory can often be the most unbelievable relief, even though it

is worth the same number of points as next weekend’s match and the many others than that follow during the season. There is almost a sense of positivity that all of the hard work in the off-season has had some form of immediate success. One cannot underestimate the mental boost and the statistical advantage that winning early in the season, and finding your feet in the opening weeks of the competition, can provide. “The Raiders have always been a dangerous side,” said Panthers new recruit, Wes Naiqama ahead of the opening round clash on Sunday. “We haven't watched any video on them as yet, we've just been focusing on ourselves and what our structures are like at training.”

IT WILL BE WON UP FRONT

Sam McKendry (New Zealand), whilst Kevin Kingston at hooker is one year older, one year more experienced and relishing the captaincy of the club. The new-look second row features premiership-winning former Melbourne star Sika Manu, and New Zealand international Lewis Brown. Nathan Smith, who is out to prove himself in a season in which he is off contract, takes the lock position vacated by Luke Lewis. It is a strong pack only strengthened by workhorses Nigel Plum and Clint Newton on the bench, and livewire hooker James Segeyaro, who will spend a fair bit of time on the park in place of Kingston. Canberra on the other hand have a slightly weaker pack, and like always will rely on their backs to score plenty of points in an attempt to skip clear of the opposition.

The Panthers boast a strong forward pack and whilst Canberra have backs with speed to burn, including former Penrith winger Sandor Earl, it is up front where the home side will do the damage. The front row features the representative pairing of Tim Grant (New South Wales) and

After training with Trent Barrett in the offseason, there will be plenty of focus on the halves pairing of Lachlan Coote and Luke Walsh, for two very different reasons. For Coote, the pressure is on to perform

COOTE AND THE BIG SWITCH

in a new position, with his career-defining fullback position now in the hands of Dean Whare, with other players lining up for the number one jumper as well. Coote played well in the number six last year, and despite mixed performances in the trials, will add some much-needed energy and forethought to the halves combination. Walsh is attempting to prove his worth, both at Penrith and potentially other clubs, as he continues to battle speculation that the Panthers want to move him aside for Johnathan Thurston. With Josh McCrone and Sam Williams offering Canberra plenty in the halves, there's a great opportunity for Coote and Walsh to prove what they have got.

THE FINAL WORD At home, Penrith should feel reasonably confident that they can get away with a win. Don't be surprised, however, to see the betting markets swing if the Raiders announce a couple of surprise inclusions. Either way, let's just enjoy the return of the footy for another season.

Ignore the critics, says Grant PHOTO: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR

ON THE EVE OF THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, TIM GRANT SAYS NOBODY SHOULD UNDERESTIMATE THE PANTHERS...

T

HE CRITICS SAY PENRITH will finish with the wooden spoon this year, but Tim Grant says claims like that should be ignored. In fact, the State of Origin prop says fans should forget the critics and focus on what happens on the field from Sunday. Speaking with Extra Time ahead of this Sunday’s important round one clash against the Canberra Raiders, Grant says he doesn’t have time for the doomsdayers. “I don’t read it (critics predictions) to be honest, I don’t really care, it’s bull***t,” he said. “I’m quite happy to play alongside the blokes I play with. I’d be a bit nervous if one of them blokes (critics) put a jersey on. I’m

happy with the team we’ve got and what we can do. I ain’t got time for critics to be honest.” With so many new faces joining the club this off-season, Grant knows he has to continue to step up as a leader among the forwards. He said he’s very proud of the culture at the club and can’t wait to show it off on Sunday afternoon. “I think we’ve bought really well and more than that they’re good fellas who’ve added to the culture and things are going great,” he said. “We are a really tight knit team. We’re hanging out and doing everything together

on and off the field. There’s a really good brand of culture we’re building out here and I think that’s the only way to win football games is to be tight, play for each other and be all on the same page.” Grant, one of the most passionate and loyal players ever to put on the Panthers jumper, couldn’t single out one particular new recruit he thought would have the greatest impact this year, instead saying everyone has a job to do and should be seen as equal. “I wouldn’t want to single anyone out, we’re all playing as a team and each and every bloke there has a job to do,” he said. “Each new player has been bought to do that job because they do it well and to single someone out is a bit harsh on the other fellas because everyone’s got their role.”

Despite Penrith finishing in second last place in 2012, Grant enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career. The 25-year-old, who’s just 10 appearances away from 100 games, reached the peak of his playing career mid-way through last season when he pulled on the sky blue jersey for the first time. Grant hopes to be back in the frame when the State of Origin series rolls around this year but said Penrith is his focus. “Obviously there’s a World Cup at the end of the year too but my biggest focus at the moment is playing well for Penrith and being consistent for Penrith,” he said. “That’s all I’m worried about for the next 12 weeks to be honest.” Grant will start at prop against Canberra on Sunday.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS

Plenty to cheer about 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

W

ELCOME TO PRIDDO’S POINT where each week I will be providing my views on what is happening in rugby league and thoughts on the big issues that pop up during the season. The footy is back this weekend, so there is plenty to cheer about, but the off-season hasn't been all good news. Drugs in sport, notably NRL rugby league clubs, have been a huge topic over the past month. We had the fanfare of a Federal Government press conference, yet no specific allegations towards specific players have been detailed so until that occurs the less said the better for those reputations being tarnished for no reason.

LUKE PRIDDIS

The NRL has obtained a great TV rights deal and from all reports they and the RLPA have agreed to a new CBA for the next few years. Players receive increased payments and better contract conditions but the question is whether the deal is as good for the lesser known players as it is for the game’s elite. The Melbourne Storm are the World Club champions and look set to give their defence of the premiership a good crack. Johnathan Thurston looks as though he is going to start the season in fine form as too will Greg Inglis. I was looking forward to Ben Barba’s continual brilliance but for the sake of his family and the game’s fans I hope he

overcomes his issues and we get to see him back to his brilliant best at some point in the season. As for the Penrith Panthers, they are unbeaten in their three trials. While you should never take trial form as any great indicator, it beats the form from our western Sydney rivals the Eels who despite a new coach still resemble their 2012 efforts. Let’s hope that the changes over the offseason at the Panthers obtain the results on the field that the fans are desperately waiting for. I look forward to a great season ahead and bringing you my thoughts on what is happening in rugby league.

New recruit, new focus

Wes finds his feet at the Panthers

PHOTOS: MELINDA JANE

STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR WES NAIQAMA HAS BEEN AROUND THE RUGBY LEAGUE BLOCK, BUT HE'S HOPING HIS NEW HOME AT PENRITH WILL DEFINE HIM...

N

EW PENRITH RECRUIT, WES Naiqama says he has nothing to prove to anyone except himself when he lines up for the Panthers this weekend. The 30-year-old Fijian, who joins the Panthers from Newcastle on a two-year deal, told Extra Time that he wanted to be the type of player that everyone wants to play with. “I have nothing to prove to anyone except that my main focus is to come here, make an impression on the boys and not let them down in any aspect on or off the field,”

Naiqama said. “I just want to be the player that everyone wants to play with. “In saying that I’m probably one of the older guys in the team, so if the younger players are after any advice or leadership then I’m happy to help them.” After moments of ups and downs on and off the field throughout his eight year career, it appears evident to everyone that the once-troubled Naiqama has turned over a new leaf and is impressing everyone in sight with his new attitude.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

One person, one very important person, that can’t quite get enough of the “new Wes” is Panthers coach Ivan Cleary, who believes Naiqama has a burning fire in his belly. “I just have this desire of wanting to play, I love playing football, I love my job and I love what I do,” Naiqama said. “Especially coming to a new club you really want to impress the coach, the staff and all of the players, so I think coming to Penrith has made the desire even more. It’s just proving to myself that I’ve still got what it takes to cut it with these young boys.” Naiqama admitted he was nervous joining the club after four years with the Knights

but didn’t take long to feel comfortable and right at home. “The transition has been a lot smoother than I thought,” he said. “I was pretty nervous coming in but all the boys have been awesome, they’ve welcomed me with open arms and the coaching staff have been great also.” The Panthers will look to Naiqama to help fill the gap left by Michael Jennings, who departed the club in the off-season. “I played centre in the first two trials as well as a bit of fullback in the Warriors game,” he said. “I do prefer playing centre but in saying that if I was put at fullback I would be comfortable in that role also.”

Fox promises a TV revolution THE MONDAY NIGHT FOOTY TEAM

STORY BY TROY DODDS

WATCHING RUGBY LEAGUE ON TELEVISION JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT BETTER, THANKS TO A MASSIVE OVERHAUL AT FOX SPORTS...

F

OX SPORTS WILL BRING fans closer to the action than ever before in 2013 with a brand new seven-day NRL lineup, five live weekly games, plus the NRL’s leading experts and ground-breaking broadcast innovations for the season. Fox Sports CEO, Patrick Delany, said this is the year for NRL fans to celebrate with subscription television. “Our live ad-free NRL has always been popular. This season, Super Saturday and Monday Night Football will be special broadcast events – more cameras, new

faces, and all the innovations we are famous for,” said Delany. “The NRL is about more than just weekends at Fox Sports. We will launch all-new weekly NRL entertainment shows to feed the excitement of fans for the weekend to come. The biggest names – Johns, Sterling, Tallis, Ikin, Kent, Squires, Gasnier and Hindmarsh will entertain and deliver insight like no other team in rugby league.” NRL fans will feel closer to their game in 2013, with Fox Sports set to combine High Definition coverage with stunning new

‘virtual’ presentations and game changing camera angles from FoxKopter, the FoxMobile segway, Ref Cam and Cornerpost Cam. “We’re going to take fans to where they’ve never been with all of our exclusive inplay innovations. This is truly the year where NRL fans come first,” said Delany. Highlighting the new weekly NRL schedule will be four brand new shows. ‘Monday Night with Matty Johns’ kicks off the week, capturing all the key moments from the round and offering the latest on every club immediately following the final match of the round. The new ‘Back Page LIVE’ arrives on Tuesdays, offering a unique look at what’s making news in sport at home and abroad.

The forensic ‘NRL 360’ takes over Wednesday nights, where Ben Ikin and Paul Kent delve into the issues affecting the game from every angle. Thursday night delivers a must-watch preview show simply named ‘Sterlo’, after its host, legendary player and commentator Peter Sterling. Sterling is one of several new faces on Fox Sports in 2013, including fellow Eels great Nathan Hindmarsh and former State of Origin and Test representatives Trent Barrett and Bryan Fletcher. Hindmarsh will be a regular on the newlook ‘Monday Night with Matty Johns’, which replaces ‘NRL Xtra’ at 9pm following Monday Night Football and will be fronted by Matthew Johns alongside Gorden Tallis. WHEN $1 CAN TURN INTO $100, IT CAN ONLY BE A GOOD THING. BUT WHERE DOES THE MONEY FROM THE FAMOUS FOOTY DOUBLES AT PENRITH STADIUM ACTUALLY GO?

I

T IS A COMMON call in the lead-up to the main game at Penrith Stadium – "get your Footy Doubles!” – but when you do dig into your pocket, find some loose change and try your luck, do you ever wonder where that money actually goes? Well, the dedicated team at the Rotary Club of Nepean are the beneficiaries. For people who don’t know, ‘Footy Doubles’ are like a lottery scratchie as in when you open it up it reveals two numbers – one number under ‘home’ and one number under ‘opposition’. These numbers correspond with players from the home and away sides. If your home side number and your away side number score the first try for their respective teams then you win a $100 cash prize.

Aaron Tyers from Rotary Club of Nepean really wanted fans, who purchase the famed Footy Doubles each week, to know where their hard-earned cash really goes. “In a box of Footy Doubles there’s 169 tickets and out of that there’s one winning ticket,” he said. “The winner gets $100 and the remaining $69 goes to the Rotary Club. We generally average selling 10 boxes a game but if Penrith are going great and the crowds are large then that usually goes up to 16-18 boxes per game.” Mr Tyers said the money raised from the fun pre-game lucky dip goes towards various youth-related projects that Rotary are involved in such as RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) and RYPEN (Rotary

Youth Program of Enrichment). “Our club mainly focuses on youth programs that can cost up to $600 per student to attend,” he said. “The programs are usually about creating young leaders or helping young people to get some leadership skills. We do a few other projects as well but what our club tends to focus on is the youth programs and giving back to the community that way.” So, next time you’re cheering the Panthers on at Penrith Stadium, look out for the Rotary volunteers who roam the stands selling Footy Doubles. They are only $1 each, so why not try your luck! Rotary is a non-political, non-religious, multi-cultural organisation whose aim is to make the world a better place.

ENRITH PANTHERS COACH GARTH Brennan is excited at the prospect of unleashing some brand new rugby league stars onto the Under 20’s Holden Cup stage in season 2013. The 2012 Under 20’s Coach of the Year hopes the mix of new and experienced faces in this year’s Panthers line-up will be a successful formula in making them a force in the competition. “We’ve got a good mix with experienced players from last year combined with some fresh faces for this year,” Brennan said. “We’ve had a good pre-season and I think we’re ready to play but we’re not ready to win a grand final just yet.” Brennan said he’s made a conservative effort to not allow the side to peak so early, like they did in 2012 where they were leading the competition mid-way through the season before falling away towards the end. “Hopefully we’re in a position where we are not at our absolute best but in a position where we can still win football matches at this time of year,” he said. “I don’t want them winning grand finals in March but I want them to build as the year goes on. We’re not going to be at our best round one but hopefully we’re in a position where we are good enough to get away with the points.” When the Panthers line-up against the Canberra Raiders this Sunday afternoon

they’ll be missing a few stand-out players from 2012 including halfback Harry Siejka, who has moved to New Zealand and former captain Vaipuna Tia Kilifi, who has been elevated to Penrith’s senior ranks. Brennan said Tia Kilifi is a “massive loss” for the side. “He’ll be a massive loss, he was our best player last year,” he said. “That’s why I hope a player like Bryce Cartwright can step up and hopefully fill Vaipuna’s role, whether that be as captain, I don’t know yet.” Other players Brennan hopes have a standout season include 17-year-old wonder kid Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and of course the hugely fancied George Jennings. “He’s very fast, very quick and I’m expecting some big things from him but not too early. He’s got a bright future but we don’t want to rush him,” he said. “George on the other hand has been phenomenal in the trials. I think his preseason form has been outstanding and I have high hopes for George this year.” Meanwhile, NSW Cup side the Windsor Wolves are dealt with a first round bye this weekend. The Wolves enjoyed mixed results in the pre-season trials while at the same time unearthing some future stars including former Fijian hotel porter Etonia Nabuli, who scored a hat trick of tries in Windsor’s last trial win against Wentworthville.

JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE WITH YVONNE PURTELL

Countdown to kickoff YVONNE Purtell is the manager of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League, nurturing our young footy talent

W

ELCOME TO THE 2013 rugby league season. The junior league competitions kick off on Saturday, April 20 but in the meantime clubs are busy preparing for the 2013 season with field preparations, trials, gear, registrations and all the behind the scenes work which many of you would be unaware of. This is done by a magnificent group of volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that we can play football each and every weekend throughout the season. 2013 will see a few changes to our competitions and whilst these won’t affect everyone I thought at this time of year I would share some with you. The U9 age group will now play 2 x 20 minutes halves, where

previously they played 2 x 15 minutes. All players in mini football must now play a minimum of two periods, instead of the previous one. With the success of our CUBs programs we have introduced 10 team first division competitions in the U12 and U13 age groups. A big change to our Sunday programs is the introduction of eight team competitions across the age groups – the previous tiered competition structure will no longer exist, and limited interchange has been introduced in the U14 to U19 first division competitions as a trial in 2013. All of these changes came about after consultation with our clubs and we believe they will benefit our district into the future.

Anyone interested in playing ladies rugby league or Panther Tag in 2013 can contact their local club secretary as a youth and ladies competition in both forms of the game is being offered. We are also trying to get an U6 all girls’ competition up and running. These competitions will be dependent on team nominations. There are a few other new initiatives which I will keep you posted with, but in the meantime a quick update with our rep football where both the Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads are undefeated after four rounds and they take on Manly at Brookvale Oval this Saturday. We look forward to a great 2013 season!
