CLINT NEWTON WRESTLES THROUGH THE EELS DEFENCE EARLIER THIS SEASON
PREVIEW BY TROY DODDS
Awful Eels keep sliding W
HEN I INITIALLY WROTE this week’s preview, I included all of the usual clichés associated with a game like this one. You know the ones – the Eels will be playing for pride, it’s a danger game, Penrith can’t lose their concentration etc etc. I even found a stat that showed just one team who has had 50 points put on them this year has lost the following week. But let’s be honest here: The Eels are a bloody awful football team in 2013 and
half to put the game away and announce themselves as true force in the competition. The Panthers are currently 7th on the ladder and it’s a far cry from where Penrith sat the last time they faced Parramatta. Before that round seven clash on a Monday night in April, Penrith had won just one game from six, and were looking more like wooden spoon contenders than a finals threat. But that 44-12 win over the Eels helped spark something, and since then, the Panthers have looked a much sharper,
explosion against Manly on Monday night really summed up just how dumb Parramatta are playing at the moment. At the end of the day, the Eels are playing without creativity, without belief and without anything resembling good defence. They are the worst team in the competition by far, and that’s saying something considering how the Dragons are playing at the moment. Penrith, on the other hand, have everything going for them at the moment
After a background that has a bit of drama and controversy associated with it, Roberts has been given a big opportunity at Penrith and if he stays on the straight and narrow, he could be anything at the Panthers and be a big part of the club’s future plans. Nigel Plum and Adam Docker have a real opportunity to dominate an Eels forward pack that is going nowhere fast, and if they do, they’ll lay the platform for Penrith to put some points on at the back end of the first half and put it out of reach by the break.
On their last visit to Parramatta Stadium, the Panthers blew the Eels off the park. Penrith produced a stunning 39-6 victory in round four of the 2012 NRL season. couldn’t win the meat tray at Parramatta Leagues Club at the moment. In fact, if the Panthers team bus broke down on the M4 and I had to run out at halfback, I still think the Eels would find a way to lose this game. Fans, players and officials have every right to feel confident going into this one, especially after the Panthers decimated the Titans in Darwin last Saturday, producing a stunning first 20 minutes of the second
more complete football team. The Eels, meanwhile, have continued to slide. Parramatta’s one guiding light in these dull times, Jarryd Hayne, won’t be taking the field on Saturday, further adding to the Eels’ woes. Hayne is certainly the most dangerous player the Eels have and without him, it’s hard to find any sort of real threat in Parramatta’s backline. The Eels have been further hurt by the actions of Mitchell Allgood, whose brain
and boast a host of players in scintillating form. After a shaky performance against the Dragons, James Roberts announced himself in a big way during the second half of last week’s demolition of the Titans. He scored three tries, and for one of them, produced a spectacular leap that not only showed off his speed but his great agility in the air. It’ll most certainly feature on plenty of highlights reels over the years to come.
Tim Grant was far better last weekend than against the Dragons and if he, Plum and Docker turn up to play, it’ll be a pretty battered and bruised Eels dressing room after the game. Forget pride, passion and all the other buzz words. After all, the Eels have none of that at the moment. Penrith will beat Parramatta on sheer ability and confidence. The Panthers are by far the better football team of the two. EXTRATIME | 3

Talent to burn THE JAMES ROBERTS STORY IS NOT ONLY ABOUT A RISING FOOTBALL STAR. IT’S ABOUT A YOUNG MAN WHO HAS BEEN GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE AT BOTH LIFE AND HIS CAREER...
G
STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR
JAMES ROBERTS ON TUESDAY PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
ETTING AN NRL LIFELINE after enduring a troubled past and upbringing is only reserved to the game’s most talented and gifted stars. Penrith’s James Roberts is one of them. The 20-year-old winger, who scored a hat-trick of tries in Penrith’s recent win against the Gold Coast, was shown the door this time last year by his junior club South Sydney after repeated breaches of his contract. Even after all the rumours surrounding his sacking, many clubs still wanted the talented Indigenous player because of his explosive speed and try-scoring ability. Penrith were the lucky ones to secure his signature, but the real luck fell with Roberts who was given a shot at redemption. “This was probably my last shot in the NRL,” Roberts admitted to Extra Time. “I feel good here at Penrith, the boys have made me feel comfortable and I’m just getting into the groove.” So good in fact that Roberts is keen to extend his deal past 2014 and remain part of Penrith’s bright future long-term. He said he owes Penrith everything for giving him a second chance. “That’s why I want to extend my contract because they’re the ones that have given me the second chance in my career… it’s good out here, it feels like home,” Roberts said. The main man responsible for helping Roberts get back on his feet to find his true potential is Panthers Aboriginal Project Officer, Glen Liddiard, whom Roberts regards as a father figure. “Glen’s helped me a lot with everything,
he’s there for me and looks out for me,” Roberts said. “If I need to go to a doctor’s appointment or see the physio he always reminds me and makes sure I don’t forget. He’s good, he’s like a dad.” Earlier this year Liddiard found a new home for Roberts nearby to Penrith Stadium where he’d be close to training but far away from the troubled life he was living back in Redfern. “It’s a lot more relaxing out here and quiet, and away from trouble I guess,” Roberts said. “I guess moving away from my mates was a good thing in a way. I miss being over there but for my career it’s probably best to stay out here. I pretty much hang out with Lidds (Liddiard) every day now, which has been good.” Roberts knows he has a good thing at Penrith and doesn’t want to ruin his chances of becoming one of the NRL’s superstars, that’s why he’s so committed to staying on the straight and narrow and leaving his demons behind. “Obviously my friends don’t have the same life as me and I can’t really hang around with them,” Roberts said of the crowd he used to mix with at Redfern. “They can go out whenever they want and I can’t. Out here my mum and little brothers have moved down and that’s kept me at home. It’s good to be back with my family again.” For now, Roberts’ aim is to cement his spot in the first grade team. From there, based on the story so far, anything is possible.

PRIDDO’S POINT WITH LUKE PRIDDIS
Panthers looking the goods 2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers
A
T THE TIME OF writing this I am watching the next potential crop of footy stars showing off their talents at the Australian Schoolboys Open Championships in Cairns. It is interesting to watch some of these young men play and then hear about the difference in their attitude when talking to the staff of the other sides throughout the week. I certainly will watch with interest to see which of these schoolboy stars will actually go on to a future in the NRL in a few years’ time. It was great to see the Panthers produce a fantastic performance in Darwin last week. This week provides them not only
the opportunity to cement their top eight position, but stick it to their western Sydney neighbours. Parramatta are clearly a side of ‘dead men walking’ with the way they went about announcing the playing roster for next year and beyond clearly backfiring. The issue they need to be very conscious of is finding a way over the remaining weeks of the competition to ensure their young players remain focused and don’t get too bogged down with scorelines like the one on Monday night. The Panthers are really looking the goods at the moment and have a chance to produce a big win on the weekend. The decider is less than a week away and
Priddo’s Point proudly supported by Heartland Penrith
unfortunately for NSW the cards seem to be falling the way of QLD as injuries put their preparations under further pressure. It is going to take a massive performance to end the reign of what is the greatest Origin side in the history of the game. I really believe that our two halves need to stand up and play leading roles from the kick off and there can be no excuses justifying them having a quiet game. While James Maloney is in his first Origin series, Mitchell Pearce has been there for a number of years now and while still relatively young needs to justify the faith put in him as there is now a true challenger for that number seven jersey in Rabbitohs star Adam Reynolds.

MATT MOYLAN IN HIS DEBUT GAME PHOTO: MELINDA JANE
STORY BY NATHAN TAYLOR
Temporary reprieve for Matt THE SALARY CAP DRAMA SURROUNDING MATT MOYLAN HAS BEEN SOLVED FOR NOW, BUT THERE’S STILL NO GUARANTEE HE WON’T HAVE TO FINISH THE YEAR IN THE NSW CUP...
I
F PENRITH MANAGE TO make the finals this year, there’s still no guarantee that fullback Matt Moylan will be part of the campaign. The Moylan vs The Salary Cap drama has now reached its sixth week with Panthers fans and officials no closer to knowing when or if the in-form local product has to return to the NSW Cup due to second tier salary cap restrictions.
Extra Time understands that Moylan has received an exemption to continue playing in the number one jersey for the Panthers at least until Lachlan Coote, his closest positional replacement, returns from a pectoral injury that he suffered in round two. Coote is understood to be undertaking light training duties and could be due back on the field as soon as round 20, although it’s likely he’ll initially play in the NSW Cup.
The NRL’s Salary Cap was a hot topic during last week’s NRL Club CEOs phone conference. It’s been confirmed that the CEOs of all 16 NRL clubs have given their support to the Salary Cap review and will work with the NRL to finalise the terms of reference in the coming weeks. In recognising the value of the Cap to the competition since the formation of the NRL, the clubs saw the strategic review as an important part of the game’s future direction. “The Salary Cap is one of those issues that is fundamental to the business of each club and it is important we are all involved in the review process,” Warriors Chief Executive,
Wayne Scurrah said. Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said the Cap has been a big part of the success of the game and clubs need to be confident that the right mechanisms are in place. “Ian Schubert (NRL Salary Cap Auditor) has had to apply these rules as they stand and I don’t think anyone can have a problem with that, but we do need to ensure the rules reflect what is happening at club level and that they have adequate procedures to allow clubs to review and challenge things,” he said. The review will be finalised before the start of the 2014 season.

bad’. Three games in seven days is how many NSW Cup matches the Windsor Wolves had to play over the past week, taking home the points from two of them. The only loss came to the first-placed Cronulla Sharks last Saturday afternoon – three days after their narrow win against North Sydney at Penrith Stadium. Speaking with Extra Time, Brennan said he was glad the big week of games was finally over. “It was fairly hectic having to review and preview three games in one week… it certainly is straining but it’s not as physical on me as it is on the guys,” he said. “I’m happy it’s over but overall I was fairly pleased with the efforts over the whole week.” Game one of Windsor’s tight three-game schedule was against Manly where they easily won 20-6. Bears at a chilly Penrith Stadium where the Wolves managed to turn it on in the second half to run out victors 28-24. Their third game against the Cronulla Sharks was by far their most challenging, not only because of fatigue setting in but they also lost three key players (Liam Ayoub, Luke Capewell and Vaipuna Tia-Kilifi) during the match. The Wolves fought hard but went down 26-24. “I would’ve liked to have got the result last Saturday against the Sharks and the boys probably deserved the win but the injuries we had in the game really took its toll,” Brennan said. “I would have to say the Manly game in tough conditions was my most pleasing effort because we played for the full 80 minutes.” This weekend the Windsor Wolves, who now sit in third position on the NSW Cup ladder, enjoy a well-earned week off due to the representative round in the NSW Cup. HERE HAS BEEN A lot of activity for our development squad merit teams during the school holidays with the U13s and U14s playing in the Bulldogs Gala Day Challenge last week. This week we saw the U13s, U14s and U15s merit squads together with the U17 Development squad come up against Wests at St Marys Leagues Stadium. The Minchinbury U13s Division 1 team represented the district in the annual NSWRL U13 Challenge. They competed in a round robin competition against Wentworthville (Parramatta) and Liverpool Catholic Club (Western Suburbs) with the winner going on to represent the Western Zone.
isolated to our district and are becoming more prevalent across the game. The board resolved that upon conviction of an offence an official / player would receive a penalty of a two year suspension whilst upon conviction of an offence of a parent / spectator the child of the parent / spectator would be suspended for a period of 12 months. Whilst many may see this as a harsh penalty the safety of the players, spectators, officials and all involved in the game is our number one consideration and the JL is willing to take the tough stance on this unruly behaviour.
At the JL board’s last meeting it was resolved to introduce a Zero Tolerance Policy in relation to unauthorised field invasion. This came about due to the increased number of incidents involving unauthorised persons entering the field and becoming involved in verbal or physical abuse of players and / or officials. Unfortunately these types of incidents are not

HEY SAY FRIDAY NIGHT’S a great night for football, and that will certainly be the case for the Panthers over the final six weeks of the competition. The final schedule for the remaining six weeks of the season was released last week and the Panthers have three Friday night games – two at home against Brisbane and the Roosters and another against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium. The focus of the salary cap dramas at Penrith has been on Matt Moylan but it has also affected the rise of the nephew of a Panthers legend. Bryce Cartwright, nephew of John, should have made his first grade debut by now, according to Panthers officials, who sought an exemption from the NRL to allow him to replace the injured Sika Manu. The NRL rejected the move, such is the ridiculous nature of the second tier salary cap. A new DVD will have Panthers fans remember some of the great matches from the past. Due for release in August, ‘NRL Essentials: Penrith Panthers’ features the 1990 Qualifying Final between Penrith and Brisbane, the 1991 Major Semi Final between Penrith and Norths, the remarkable comeback win over the Wests Tigers in 2000, the 2003 Preliminary Final against the Warriors and the Panthers’ thrashing of

Manly late in the 2004 season. A must-have for any fan! Warriors star Shaun Johnson is being constantly linked with the Panthers. Whether or not there’s any truth to the rumour is yet to be seen. Jamie Soward, currently playing in the Super League in England, didn’t want to spend the rest of the season in reserve grade, developing poor habits and draining his confidence. That’s where he would have been if he would have stuck it out at the Dragons before joining Penrith in the pre-season. “I’m with the Panthers for four years from next year, so this is a chance to test myself in the top flight here rather than getting into some bad habits in the reserve grade back home,” Soward told England’s TNT Magazine. “I’m the hardest task master on myself so I’ve come over here expecting to win games and compete.” A number of players from Penrith’s NSW Cup side, Windsor, have been named in the NSW Cup Representative Squad to play the QLD Residents on Wednesday, July 17 at ANZ Stadium, prior to the State of Origin decider. Sam Anderson and Geoff Daniela (pictured) will play in the game, as will former Panther Dayne Weston and incoming flyer Kevin Naiqama.

Stats guru gives us the lowdown on Deciders EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’
O
N JULY 17TH 2013, the New South Wales Blues will have one more opportunity at ending the seven year stranglehold on State of Origin. Once again they will have the chance to do it in “The Decider”. On the back of a Maroons mauling at Suncorp in game two and with several players under injury clouds, the Blues are looking ominous heading into next Wednesday’s sold out clash at ANZ Stadium. The Footy Show Insider has phoned the best stats man in the business, David Middleton and dug up some facts on State of Origin Deciders... just for you. Here’s his best... 1. There have been 16 Deciders – Queensland have won 10, NSW 4 and two have been drawn. These numbers aren’t exactly what a NSW fan wants to read, but maybe 2013 will be the year the Blues break the drought. 2. When it comes to Deciders in Sydney,
there have been six – Queensland have won 3, NSW 2 and 1 has been drawn. At ANZ Stadium there have been three Deciders – NSW have won one, Queensland one and one has been drawn. This stat is looking more favourable for our boys in Blue, Laurie Daley and his men will be hoping to add one more to the W column come Wednesday night. 3. In their seven-year winning streak, the Maroons have won four game three Deciders – two in Brisbane, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. Perhaps the only statistic that swings towards New South Wales is the fact that Queensland hasn’t been as successful in Sydney as they have been at other grounds. With this year’s Decider the first at ANZ Stadium since 2008, the Blues will be confident that the sold-out crowd can get them home. 4. The last time the Blues won a Decider in Sydney was in 2004. A team coached by
the great Gus Gould and captained by Danny Buderus. NSW won 36-14. This time a side led by passionate captain Paul Gallen and legendary coach Laurie Daley will be hoping to overcome the odds and finally bring that shield back to New South Wales. Surely they can do it!
State of Origin Game 3 – The Decider will be live on Nine’s Wide World of Sports next Wednesday at 7.30pm. For a comprehensive Origin wrap and your weekly footy fix tune into ‘The Footy Show’ 9.30pm Thursdays on Channel Nine hosted by Paul Vautin and Michael Slater.

Stakes now higher

ANTHERS COACH IVAN CLEARY knows the season isn’t going to get any easier now that other clubs are starting to take notice of his side. Penrith now sit in seventh spot on the ladder with plenty of clubs below them desperate to fill a top eight spot by the end of the season. “From here on the games get tougher and the stakes get higher so you’ve got to be better and that’s what we’re concentrating on,” Cleary said. Cleary said he was happy that his side had improved not only from last year, but from the start of this season. At one stage, they lost five games straight. The Panthers need to win just one more game this season to equal the number of total wins from last season. And proving just how far the Panthers have come, the side has scored a whopping
