A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE AND MUSIC
03
NATHAN TAYLOR chats with 2012 ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ winner and former CDB band member Andrew De Silva about his remarkable comeback onto the music scene…
“
This really feels like a second chance for me and I really have the Australian public to thank for that. Not many people in this industry get a second chance and this time around I’m just so thankful for everything.” Those words are from a man who in the 1990’s was part of one of Australia’s most successful R&B acts. Following his departure from CDB, Andrew De Silva slipped back into society, presumably never to be heard from again. But after coming through a very terrifying ordeal, an ordeal that nearly ended his life, Andrew decided to step back into the spotlight and open up his world to the entire country. At the start of the year Andrew had a conversation with friends about re-launching his career on the ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ (AGT) platform. The feedback was very positive, so he took the leap of faith and turned up to an open audition along with thousands of other hopefuls. Andrew said there was a lot of fear involved in coming back onto the scene, not because he feared performing again but feared confronting the world with a speech impediment. “I’m a recovering stutterer, which not many people knew about it,” he said. “My stutter isn’t a severe thing but it seems to hold me back from doing things and this show (AGT) was one of those things where I thought I didn’t know if I can do this because there was lots of speaking involved. But I shared it with the nation and it worked out well.” But it wasn’t just Andrew’s stutter that

Australia got to know, we also found out about his six month fight with testicular cancer, a battle that changed the way he saw the world forever. “Having cancer really made me stop,” Andrew said. “After being in hospital I just felt like not going back to the band (CDB) and I wasn’t sure what my future was going to hold. “But my songwriting changed after that because I wrote from another place inside of me… I really grew.” Andrew believes this public display of honesty about his past was the prime reason the Australian public connected with him during the program. He was ultimately voted as the winner. “I think as Australians we like honesty and I think on ‘AGT’ I really went for it,” he said. “I bared everything on the show, I didn’t hold back. I told everyone what I had been doing over the years like singing at weddings and stuff. And this is what can happen sometimes – when you’re hot you’re hot, when you’re not you’re not.” Last weekend Andrew released his first single since winning the talent show, titled ‘Your Paradise’. The summer anthem was co-written by Andrew and Australian music producers DNA. “‘Your Paradise’ is about that moment when you meet a beautiful person, not only are they beautiful but it seems like their world around them is beautiful,” Andrew said. “It is about losing yourself to them and escaping into their world.” Andrew said not only had the musical landscape changed dramatically since he was last big on the scene some 15 years ago but

It is about losing yourself to them and escaping into their world he himself has also changed as a person and performer. “Well it certainly feels [like] there’s a lot more music out there,” he said. “More artists and more songs are being released every week and it’s a faster industry because of the Internet. “In terms of myself, there’s a few sides to me now. There’s a deeper side that just wants to sing these songs with a guitar around my neck and perform from my heart. But I still have that pop sensibility about me as well and my new single showcases that.” Andrew said he looks upon his time with CDB fondly but with an eye to the future. His current sound is an updated version of the pop R&B that defined him during the
90’s and is a sonically mature offering that combines with genuinely soulful delivery. He also said being back with music giant Sony was the “icing on the cake”.
This Saturday, December 15, Andrew De Silva will be performing his new single along with a few other surprises as part of the St Marys Town Centre Christmas celebrations. His single ‘Your Paradise’ is available now through Sony Music, and his full-length album will be released in the first quarter of 2013.

Beccy and Adam are both celebrated songwriters, both are multi-award winning recording artists and both are notorious, as Adam Harvey puts it, “troublemakers”. Comedy aside, let’s not forget, they are quality musicians. Whilst they’ll have the audience in tears of laughter, Adam and Beccy are experts in their chosen field. Between them they have acquired an impressive 17 Golden Guitar Awards, six Gold records and a string of number one hits to name but a few of their accolades. 2012 has been a hugely successful year for Beccy Cole, after taking home two Golden Guitars at this year’s Australian Country Music Awards. Come along and get into the Christmas spirit with Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole when they hit the Windsor RSL Club this Sunday, December 16 at 3pm. To book or for more information call 4587 6900.
ith the summer school holidays just around the corner there’s no better time for the family to catch one of the best adaptation’s of ‘The Wind in the Willows’. The famous production will be staged at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan for six shows only at the end of this month. Kenneth Grahame’s immortal story is a rollicking yet gentle adventure of life on the riverbank, starring the pompous, arrogant, vain, hilarious Toad – a favourite with children everywhere. Toad, along with his better behaved friends, Ratty, Mole, Otter and Badger, as well as the rascally Weasel, will come to life in the beautiful grounds of Australia’s largest botanic garden. There is fun for young and old as the Head Chief Rabbit transforms the audience into rabbits with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose. The young ‘rabbits’ are encouraged to get involved in the action, and are given every opportunity to scream out loud, sing along and become part of the adventure. With laughs and surprises for children and adults, this is interactive theatre at its best.
Over the years tens of thousands have delighted in the simple pleasures of this rollicking promenade production, so this summer pack a picnic, pack the kids and head on down to the riverbank. Don’t miss ‘The Wind in the Willows’ playing at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan from Thursday, December 27 to Sunday, December 30. Tickets are $25. ugh Jackman is the Easter Bunny, Alec Baldwin is Saint Nick, Isla Fischer is the Tooth Fairy, Chris Pine is Jack Frost and Jude Law is the Bogeyman in the visceral, colourful and manic animation ‘Rise of the Guardians’. ‘Rise of the Guardians’ is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes – each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world. Kids are going to love this film, simply because of the beauty and sophistication of the animation. The screen comes to life with colour and movement and stuns audience members the way ‘Avatar’ did. The voice performances are all captivating, and it’s a joy to imagine the actors as their ‘guardian’ counterparts. ‘Rise of the Guardians’ is in cinemas now and is rated PG.

wo-time Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner takes the reigns in the fourth ‘Bourne’ movie, ‘The Bourne Legacy’, out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. The narrative architect behind the ‘Bourne’ film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the latest chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise. The writer/director expands the ‘Bourne’ universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces a new hero (Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton. While ‘The Bourne Legacy’ maintains all of the suffocating action sequences past directors Doug Liman and Paul Greengrass incorporated so successfully into their own ‘Bourne’ flicks, ‘Legacy’ misses both Jason Bourne the character and Matt Damon the actor. Jeremy Renner is more than capable in the lead role, but he’s no Damon.

-Factor favourites The Collective didn’t take any time to rest following their time on the hit TV series – instead they have already released their first EP. The band, consisting of Julian De Vizio, Jayden Sierra, Will Singe, Trent Bell and Zach Russell initially auditioned as individual acts, but the X-Factor mentors saw that the singers had strong potential as a group. With the guidance of superstar Ronan Keating, the band is well on their way to becoming superstars in their own right, with some calling them Australia’s answer to One Direction. Comparisons between the two boybands were inevitable when The Collective placed third in the X-Factor; the same position that One Direction achieved before going on to become a global phenomenon. Their debut single ‘Surrender’ was written by Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci, who have worked with artists such as Timomatic and Reece Mastin. The single has already debuted at number six

ith millions of bubbles set to burst over the coming Festive season, here are a few ideas as to what’s available in genuine Champagnes and value Aussie red and white bubblies within the range of all budgets. Starting with the cheapest under $10, our list goes through to the best-of-thebest that we’ve tasted and enjoyed during 2012 and would welcome to our table this Christmas. Under $10: Banrock Station Sparkling White Shiraz $7.47; Angas Brut Cuvee $7.77. $10-$15: Hardys Notage Hill Pinot Noir Chardonnay $10.99. $15-$25: Blue Pyrenees NV Sparkling Shiraz $24; Yarra Burn Premium Cuvee Brut $20 and their Premium Cuvee Rosé $20; Dumont Prestige Cuvee Australia $20. $25-$30: Campbells NV Sparkling Shiraz $30; Yarra Burn Pinot Meunier 2007 $30. $30-$35: Logan Vintage ‘M’ Cuvee 2009 $35. $35-$40: Chandon Vintage Brut
2009, Chandon Blanc de Blancs 2009 and Chandon Vintage Brut Rosé each $39.95. $40-$45: NV Champagne Duperrey Cru Brut $44.99. $100-$150: Champagne Taittinger Brut Millesime 2004 $150. A great gift idea both for the wine enthusiast and the budding novice this Christmas is Jeremy Oliver’s 16th edition of the Australian Wine Annual (2013.) A qualified winemaker in his own right, this is Jeremy’s 24th book about wine and is crammed with over 1400 tasting notes on current releases, 14,000 ratings of back vintages, details of over 300 Australian wines and wineries, and thoughts on what will be “hot” on the wine scene in 2013. It’s a great guide for getting the most out of your wine purchases in the coming year at just $23.95 from good book stores and select fine wine outlets and cellar doors. This is David’s final column for 2012. He’ll return with his expert words on wine in our January 18, 2013 edition.

LITTLE INDIA
week ago if you had asked me about the country of India, two words would have come to mind – Sachin Tendulkar. Since then I have eaten at Little India on High Street in Penrith, open for dinner every night except Mondays. Those who have eaten Indian food before will know the classic Indian dish Butter Chicken very well. At Little India the chicken simply melts in your mouth, but there is more to this restaurant than one dish. A wide selection of entrées are available including the Little Indian Platter, which offers samples of Chicken Tikka, Seekh Kebab, Chicken Kebab, Murg Tikka and the most tender of lamb cutlets that would most certainly excite our Aussie mate Sam Kekovich. If you don’t want the platter and simply want the best item on the menu, order a serving of the Seekh Kebabs for your starter. With a beautiful mint sauce, this will really kick off your dining experience with a bang. Of great delight to the vegetarians of the world, Little India offers a wide selection. My attention was drawn to the main meal Navratan Korma which is mixed vegetables pan-fried with dried nuts, a cream sauce sprinkled with fenugreek leaves, green coriander and mace powder.
Yum Cha Every Sunday Lunch Tuesday - Friday Lunch Special from $9
Now to my personal favourite, the meat! Take your pick of seafood, chicken, lamb and beef dishes. If you can handle food with a bit of heat, then you’ll enjoy the Beef Vindaloo. Rogan Josh is also a very popular lamb dish but the Chicken Tikka Masala alone is enough to come back for. Of course, for the traditionalists among us, the Butter Chicken is simply brilliant, and amongst the best you will taste in the local area. Accompanied with your choice of naan bread, a meal at Little India will have your stomach screaming for more, it’s just that good! Whilst take away is very popular at Little India, I would suggest sitting inside the restaurant to soak up the true atmosphere and flavour it has to offer. Once you have experienced the palatable tastes of Little India, I am sure you will also be asking yourself… “Sachin who?” - Reviewed by Ron Heath Want your restaurant featured in FYI? Kalinda Jade Studios
KJ ROCK School Holiday Workshops
Rocking holiday activities are happening again Following the success of their last program, Kalinda Jade Studios is once again running their KJ Rock school holiday workshops. Held at the South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday 16th and Wednesday 23rd January 2013, the workshops offer school students - and their parents - an exciting and expressive alternative to hanging around at home or attending vacation care. Primary school aged students (ages five to 11) will participate in music, dance, drama and art workshops. Older students (ages 12 and up) joining the school holiday KJ Rock program will form bands and learn how to play music as a group. According to owner and teacher, Kalinda McDonald, the workshops held last holidays were a huge success. “We had over 40 students of various ages at our first workshop and the kids had lots of fun, learnt some new skills and built their confidence. “In our older age group, we’re looking for students who want to be in a band.
Whether they are drummers, singers, guitarists, bass or keyboard players, the school holiday program is a great place to meet new friends and jam with musicians at a similar level. “After the last holiday workshops many of our students joined our monthly KJ Rock program, and some of those band members will even get some gigs throughout the year!” Parents will find the camp to be an affordable and enjoyable alternative to vacation care, with discounts available for families registering more than one child. Places are limited so early registration is encouraged. To find out more contact Kalinda Jade Studios on 0403 134 336, email info@kalindajadestudios.com.au or find Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook. Kalinda Jade Studios also offers regular tuition in drums, singing, piano, guitar and bass and music theory to students of all ages and abilities, with high school music tuition a specialty.

ollowing on from the success of The Fittler Files comes The Fittler Files 2, a review of the 2012 rugby league season from round one through to the grand final, covering all the big events both on and off the field. Not simply a rehash of the regular season, NRL-sanctioned press conferences and news, this is a genuine inside look into rugby league from a trusted and wellconnected team. Written with Freddy’s brand of honesty and humour, and including 250 photographs, The Fittler Files 2012 is the ultimate gift for any footy fan this Christmas. Brad “Freddy” Fittler played 40 Tests for Australia, 31 Origin matches for NSW and 336 first grade games for Penrith and the Roosters. Now, as a keen photographer, commentator and occasional coach (City Origin team) he continues to relish his involvement in the game that gave him his
chance in life. The Fittler Files 2 is largely the product of weekly conversations and thoughts shared through season 2012 over coffee in a Sydney Harbourside park – just ‘talking football’. It was as good as life gets, Freddy reckons on his season spent chasing the game. The Fittler Files 2012 is now available through HarperCollins Publisher in paperback format. FYI has three copies of Brad Fittler’s The Fittler Files 2012 to give away. For your chance to win one, send an envelope with your name and phone number on the back to Weekender Brad Fittler Competition, Suite 2, 42-44 Abel St, Jamisontown 2750. Entries close Wednesday, December 19. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTP-APP-0000001330. Terms and conditions at www. westernweekender.com.au.

er song ‘Skinny Love’ took Australia by storm earlier this year, reaching number two on the Australian charts. Following on from her incredibly successful debut album, Birdy will fly south this April for her first ever Australian tour. The teenage English singer/songwriter, whose real name is Jasmine van den Bogaerde, has been one of the shining lights of 2012. At just 16 her astonishingly focused and charismatic stage presence resembles that of a seasoned performer. Birdy’s self-titled album hit the number one spot on the ARIA Album chart just a few months ago, and has already reached double platinum status. Powered by her four-times platinum hit single ‘Skinny Love’ and the platinum ‘People Help People’, the brilliant debut showcases her voice – pure, powerful and steeped in soul. Joining Birdy on her national tour is another up and comer from the UK, Lewis Watson. Watson topped the iTunes singersongwriter chart on the first day of release with his debut EP ‘It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It, BTW’, outselling the likes of Adele,

013 is already blessing us with some awesome music acts but they perhaps don’t get much bigger than this man – Bruce Springsteen. The man, affectionately nicknamed “The Boss”, is headed to Australia with the E Street Band for the first time in a decade. Happening in March next year, the ‘Wrecking Ball Tour’ will see Springsteen perform live at AllPhones Arena on Monday, March 18. The ‘Wrecking Ball’ world tour has already stopped over in 18 countries with over 80 shows in the bag including several of the longest performances of Springsteen’s career. The tour has earned universal acclaim with Rolling Stone calling it “gigantic”. The tour, in support of the new album ‘Wrecking Ball’, recently won the 2012 Billboard Touring Awards ‘Top Draw’ Award, in recognition of the year’s top ticket-selling tour. Springsteen is a legend on the music scene. He’s sold more than 120 million albums worldwide and received numerous awards for his work including 20 Grammy Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and was inducted into the Rock and

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor In some really exciting news, Channel Seven has commissioned a four-hour drama titled ‘Never Tear Us Apart: The INXS Story’. It’s understood shooting will begin in Melbourne mid-next year and producers have already started looking for actors in their late teens or 20’s to play the late Michael Hutchence and his bandmates Jon, Tim and Andrew Farris, Kirk Pengilly, Gary Beers as well as their long-time manager Chris Murphy. As this is sure to interest many Australians who are fans of the superstar band, I’ll be letting you know of any future developments. Channel Ten are hoping for a better 2013 and one thing that could change their fortunes is snaring the cricket. It’s understood Ten are set to aggressively bid for the rights, which Nine have held for the last 33 years. The network has also specified that it is interested in the popular Big Bash tournament for next year as well. There’s talk FOX Sports are keen to share the Big Bash rights with a free-to-air network over the coming years. The promos are some of the best I’ve seen in a long time and finally Channel Ten have announced the cast for the upcoming
We all love a big Christmas feast, so why w not see how legendary Australian chef Maggie Beer cooks up hers. To celebrate the festive season Beer has invited some special guests to the ultimate Australian Christmas feast in the beautiful surroundings of her own property in the Barossa Valley. Tuck into ‘Maggie Beer’s Christmas Feast’ when it airs this Tuesday, December 18 at 8pm on ABC1. Still on Christmas, and there’s no better way to gear up for the big day than a night of caroling. Every year on Christmas Eve Channel Nine puts on a wonderful presentation of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ and this year is no different. Hosted by the ‘Today’ show’s Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic, the 75th Anniversary ‘Carols by Candlelight’ will feature a number of well-known Australian voices performing their Christmas favourites including Rachael Leahcar, Sarah de Bono, Darren Percival, Marina Prior, Tim Campbell, Anthony Callea, Rob Mills, Lucy Durack, David Hobson and Shane Jacobson. ‘Carols by Candlelight’ airs Christmas Eve, December 24, at 8pm on Channel Nine. Lastly, Foxtel has announced its new movie channel offering available to subscribers from January 1 next year. Foxtel will now offer a Foxtel Movies and Premium Drama package consisting of seven Foxtel movie channels (all in HD and SD), retain Showcase as a dedicated premium drama channel with HBO titles, World Movies and two +2 time shifted channels. The move follows Foxtel’s acquisition of Showtime PMP and news of the closure of the Movie Network Channels. This should keep you entertained for hours!

he Christmas party season is well and truly underway and last Thursday night, it was time for GenYQ to celebrate the spirit of the season. GenYQ is a business networking group for young professionals in Penrith aged under 35. Run under the expertise of the Penrith Business Enterprise Centre, it has grown enormously since it was introduced two years ago. Members gathered at Panthers World of Entertainment for the Christmas celebration. ne of Australia’s hottest live bands, Dead Letter Circus, is headed to Windsor’s Fitzroy Hotel on December 28 for a gig you’d be mad
Coast, recording their much anticipated follow up album to their chart topping debut ‘This Is The Warning’. Dead Letter Circus have cited rock acts such as Tool, Deftones, Soundgarden, Radiohead and Pearl Jam as influences on the band, while also crediting electronic artists such as Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails and UNKLE. But the band, however, acknowledges that “while we don’t sound like a mash up of these bands, they have all definitely infused our minds with a love for writing epic, layered and high energy songs”. Dead Letter Circus will be supported by Hands Like Houses who are currently enjoying huge success touring their debut album in the States. Dead Letter Circus rock the Fitzroy Hotel live Friday, December 28 at 8.30pm. Tickets are $23. To book or for more information call 4577 3396 or visit www.fitzroyhotel.com.au.
