Residents go to the polls “The best I’ve seen”: Mayor praises current Councillors ahead of election

ushfires, amalgamation speculation and the emergence of the Western Sydney Airport as a key agenda item – it’s been a busy four years for the current Council, which wrapped up its term last month. Blue Mountains residents will go to the polls this Saturday to vote for the Councillors they want to represent them until 2020. Mayor Mark Greenhill addressed Councillors at Council’s August meeting, reflecting on some of the successes they have had since he took on the role in 2013. “Daniel Myles lied to me, he told me this gig was easy,” Cr Greenhill said. “Five weeks into the Mayoral term all I was confronted with was smoke, blue and red lights and a whole lot of trouble.”

The flashing lights and smoke came from the disastrous 2013 bushfires in Winmalee and Springwood. Looking back Cr Greenhill commended each of his Councillors for their support and help during a very difficult time and in taking over the recovery process after the State and Federal Governments moved on. “A four month recovery process for something as devastating as that wasn’t good enough,” he said. “Every single family benefited because you took a stand and took on the Government.” Other successes Cr Greenhill touched on included avoiding amalgamation of the Council with other nearby local Councils including Penrith, the Hills District and Hawkesbury. “The critics said we should be amalgamated but we stayed strong and we succeeded,” he said. Cr Greenhill praised all of the Councillors he’s worked with over the last four years.

“I’ve seen them come and go but this lot is the best I’ve seen yet,” he said. “We have operated as a unified team with political interests taking a back seat to community interests.” Councillors Anton Von Schulenburg and Brendan Luchetti also spoke as neither of them are running for a spot this time around. Cr Von Schulenburg said he was proud to have been a member of a Council that had improved its finances, implemented green bins and worked hard on a Local Environmental Plan for the community and region. Cr Luchetti, an independent who was Deputy Mayor for part of the recent term, said it had been a roller coaster ride but one that he was glad he was a part of. total of 17 candidates will contest Ward 1 at Saturday’s Council Election, with a mixture of youth and experience on the ballot paper. Greens candidate Kerry Brown is hoping to work her way on to Council and says the party has several key areas it’s focusing on. “We need an economic strategy that protects and advances our major assets including our unique natural heritage, romantic built heritage, and our arts community,” Ms Brown said. “Tackling global warming starts locally with Council, businesses and the community working together on an agreed plan to target zero emissions.” A Wentworth Falls resident, Ms Brown owns her own gardening and landscaping business. The Greens candidate strongly opposes Western Sydney Airport and is an advocate for saving the Wayzgoose Café in Leura. One to look out for this election is newcomer Sam Parker-Davies, an 18-yearold independent candidate running as part of a group of three under the banner name ‘Your Community.’ Having graduated from Korowal High School in Hazelbrook only last year, Mr

A

Greens candidate Kerry Brown Parker-Davies has been busy travelling, raising much needed funds for charities and now running for local Council. “Our core principle is community empowerment,” Mr Parker-Davies said. “We want to see a Council that works

co-operatively with the community to deliver considered and thoughtful solutions that come from the ground up. “Through monthly meetings our group aims to discuss ideas with critical analysis from the public, allowing for diverse input, creating the most considered, effective, economic and supported decisions possible.” Current Ward 1 Councillors Sarah Shrubb, Don McGregor and Michael Begg are all running again. Cr Begg, an independent, is hopeful he’ll earn another term as he wants to keep fighting for residents. “It gives me deep satisfaction helping people when they feel that Council is not helping as they should,” Cr Begg said. “My aim is to improve the quality of life for people in Ward 1 without them being faced with excessive Council rates costs.” As a long term resident in the Mountains, Cr Begg has owned and operated a Mountains-based business for 27 years. Ward 1 takes in Mount Tomah, Mount Wilson, Mount Irvine, Bell and Mount Victoria to Leura. With three spots to fill in Ward 1, Labor will be hoping it can retain its current two spots on Council. The Greens and Liberal Party do not currently have a representative in Ward 1 on Council.

Surprise! Election is this Saturday Council election is important Most people I speak to seem incredibly surprised that they need to vote in the local Council election this Saturday, September 10. People are well and truly over politics and elections after a State Election last year, a longer than usual Federal Election campaign just a few months ago and of course the odd leadership challenge thrown in along the way. But yes, this Saturday you do need to go to the polls again and yes, it’s important that you use your vote wisely. (And yes, sausage sizzles will again be at the ready). Council is probably the most complained about level of government out of the three, and yet it’s the one we all seem to pay the least attention to when elections come around. In 2016 Councils are about much more than roads, rates and rubbish and in fact play a vital role in the way we get around the city in which we work, live and play. Councils also have a seat at the table when it comes to vital infrastructure projects such as the new airport in western Sydney. While local government still has its fair share of political agendas and egos, it is also the level of government where you’ll most find people dedicated to improving the local community. Without singling out anybody for fear of being labelled unfair, the ballot paper this Saturday is full of names who have the Blue Mountains community and its future well and truly at heart. Politicians are often labelled as “out of touch”, greedy or in it for themselves, but truth be told, you’re not going to get rich

“Do yourself a favour – don’t treat this Saturday as a chore”

by being on Council. The perks extend to a minimal wage and a few lollies at the monthly meeting. Do yourself a favour – don’t treat this Saturday as a chore. Do a little bit of research (on your own or via today’s Record) and play a role in helping determine who guides our region’s growth over the next four years. This next Council will have a number of key items on its agenda, but there is no doubt that the planned airport for Badgerys Creek will be at the top of the list. There remains anger throughout the Mountains about the airport, and while it’s inevitable that it will be built, we need to make sure we do everything possible to ensue the lifestyle everyone enjoys here isn’t destroyed. Panthers do community proud The Penrith Panthers have qualified for the rugby league Finals in all three grades

for the first time since the introduction of the Under 20’s format in 2008. It is something to be incredibly proud of. Behind the scenes the Panthers are desperately trying to create a successful era both on and off the field that escaped the club for various reasons after their two premierships in 1991 and 2003. After all the criticism and question marks, Phil Gould’s vision for the club is starting to come to fruition and the Panthers are on the brink of an era that could deliver them an unprecedented level of community support. Whatever the results over the next month, there is no question that the Panthers have reached new heights in 2016. You get the feeling something very special is building. Failure looms for NRL’s 6pm game Long a gripe of many fans, Monday Night Football joined corner posts, punching and the North Sydney Bears in the giant rugby league graveyard last week. A sensible decision, most would say, but the NRL’s move to open up a Friday 6pm timeslot for games next year just screams of stupidity. The concept of a ‘pub game’ simply won’t work and while a big chunk of matches are likely to be in New Zealand, there is still sure to be some scheduling nightmares. In the first part of the season, the game will actually air at 5pm in Queensland, rugby league’s second biggest state. That is just ridiculous. I’ll give it a year before the NRL wakes up, listens to the fans and finds a new timeslot for the match.

Council Election

Independent wants to make his mark on Council Ward 2 candidate promises to get “party politics” out of Blue Mountains Council ERIN MAMO

ndependent Robert Thompson is hoping to break the dominance of the two major parties in Ward 2 at Saturday’s Council Election. With his counterparts Rosa Del Ponte and Peter Daley, the trio is vowing to get party politics out of the Blue Mountains City Council. “Party politics is paralysing our Council,” Mr Thompson said. “Party councillors have to run how they are told to run and there is little original thought, imagination or initiative. “We believe independents are the only way to run Council to get new thoughts.” Ward 2 is currently represented by two Labor Councillors and one Liberal Councillor. Mr Thompson, from Lawson, is a qualified light air craft engineer and also works in video production and as cameraman on television shows. Mr Thompson said his team wants to see greater transparency with funding including the bushfire relief budget and administration costs. “Blue Mountains City Council spends 23 per cent of its budget on administration, other councils like Gosford and the Hills District only spend five per cent,” he said.

I

Independent Robert Thompson “We need to look after our community as a priority.” Current Councillor, Romola Hollywood, will ask to be re-elected to the local Council with Annette Bennett and Tim Murawski on her ticket for the Labor Party. “I want continue to deliver for Ward 2,” Cr Hollywood said. “In the last four years, by working closely with the community, I have delivered on a range of local projects.

“I have a strong understanding of the policy process and how to advocate effectively for better outcomes for our community.” Cr Hollywood has worked in the nongovernment early childhood and community welfare sectors for the last 20 years with a primary focus on policy development and advocacy to improve the lives of children, young people and families. The Councillor has lived in the Mountains for over 30 years and during this time has been actively involved in many community organisations. Cr Hollywood is opposed to the Western Sydney Airport and has vowed to fight to stop it from going ahead. Current Deputy Mayor, Chris Van der Kley has been on Council for 17 years and is now asking to be re-elected for another term. With James Beckett and Graeme Keeley on his ticket, the three Councillors all agree that they need to protect and preserve the Blue Mountains. “Our unique area is one of great beauty and diversity and should be protected at all costs,” Cr Van der Kley said. “We want to work with relevant authorities for the benefit of all residents in the protection of our environment.” Ward 2 takes in Wentworth Falls to Faulconbridge/Springwood.

Council Election

Nurse hopes to add fresh blood to Ward 3 Strong independent ticket but Labor and Liberal both keen to hold spots on Council ERIN MAMO

hae Foenander is a dedicated mother and nurse who lives and works in the Blue Mountains, and this time next week she’s hoping to add Councillor to her resume as well. Ms Foenander is heading an Independent ticket for Ward 3, which covers Faulconbridge/Springwood to Valley Heights. “I consider myself an ordinary resident who just happens to have a strong sense of love and protection for what we have in the Blue Mountains,” Ms Foenander said. “Our community and environment is special and unique and is worth fighting for to protect against people or interest groups who want to change the fabric of it with over development and an airport for their self interest.” Ms Foeanander said she is not a politician and only has the interest of the community in mind and vows to always put that first. “I will always put the interest of community and environment first and I won’t make promises I cannot keep,” she said. Current Labor Councillor Mick Fell is hoping to be re-elected so that he can continue the work that he has been involved in over the past four years. “I want to see the Council continue to

S

Mick Fell support local residents in times of natural disasters, to assist in their recovery from such events and to develop further resilience in the community,” Cr Fell said. “We are a unique area and need our own, locally appropriate environmental protec-

tion and development controls.” Cr Fell wants to be able to assure the community that the Council will remain fit for the future, financially stable and independent, and will not be amalgamated with any other local Council. The Labor candidate also strongly opposes the Western Sydney Airport and the suggestion that there may be no curfew in place, allowing the community to be affected by an airport that operates 24 hours a day. Liberal Councillor Daniel Myles believes experience is the key for the next term of Council. Cr Myles said there has been so much turmoil in local Council recently that it needs experienced Councillors to get it through. “Recently we have avoided amalgamation and the city has been declared fit for the future,” Cr Myles said. “Now, I want to make sure people aren’t disadvantaged by the cost of living. “To do this we need to upgrade our tourism and boost the economy so that we can avoid rate rises.” The Springwood local who works in a call centre when he isn’t in Council says he would also like to see the Springwood Town Master Plan through to the end. The Greens’ ticket in Ward 3 is being lead by Joel Macrae.

More work to be done, says Mayor Greenhill Western Sydney Airport remains a key issue for Ward 4 candidates on Saturday ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill says there’s “still more to be done” as he prepares to line-up for re-election at Saturday’s poll. Mr Greenhill said he wants to continue to be an accessible advocate and voice for the community. “There are many things that we have achieved as a Council that I am very proud of, but there is always more to be done,” Cr Greenhill said. “I will continue to fight to preserve and protect our villages and world heritage area from over development and the proposed Western Sydney Airport.” With the bushfire season about to start, Cr Greenhill is also focusing on bushfire readiness. “As residents of this beautiful part of the world, there are many risks and that is why our response to bushfire emergencies is critical,” he said. “My support for our emergency services and bushfire preventative measures is unwavering. “Our Green bins will not only help preserve the life of our tip by reducing landfill by one third, they will also be a huge help for residents when preparing their homes for the bushfire season.”

B

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill Greens candidate Kate McConville says she has been waiting for the right time in her career and as a mother to be able to devote time to the “Green cause”. “I’ve been a Greeny forever and I’m now at a point in my life where I can devote my time to the cause that I’m passionate about,” she said. “I’m passionate about people, the environment and the local community. “When I hear about people’s issues on the ground I’m good at taking them and doing something with them.” The mother of two and business owner

is particularly passionate about stopping the Western Sydney Airport and the detrimental effects she believes it will have on the Blue Mountains. “We live in a world heritage area and my concern is that it will be vulnerable because of the extra pollution not to mention the effects that it will have on our health,” she said. “I’ve been an organic greeny for most of my life and I don’t want to have to wash my veggies that I’ve grown in my garden before I eat them because of pollution in the air.” If Ms McConville is elected to Council she has a whole list of items that she will start working on including lobbying Transport NSW and Sydney Trains in relation to parking at Lapstone and Glenbrook train stations. Liberal candidate Brendan Christie is hoping to retain his spot on Council. Cr Christie will lead the Liberal team of three with former Deputy Mayor Jeff Egan and Mount Riverview resident Melissa McIntosh on his ticket. “I am very pleased two long term residents like Jeff and Melissa, who have such a passion for our local community and extensive management experience, have chosen to be part of the Liberal team for Ward 4,” Cr Christie said. Australia’s new $5 banknote entered circulation last Thursday. Issuance is being supported by an information campaign to ensure that the Australian public is able to identify the new banknote and its security features. “The new $5 banknote has a range of security features that have not previously been used on an Australian banknote and that will help to keep our banknotes secure against counterfeiting into the future,” said Reserve Bank of Australia Governor, Glenn Stevens. “New features include a world-first clear top-to-bottom window and a number of dynamic features that change as the banknote is tilted.” The existing $5 banknote will be progressively withdrawn from circulation but can continue to be used as usual.

Striking glimpse into our history New photo exhibition showcases amazing story of Woodford Academy ERIN MAMO

photographic exhibition at Woodford Academy this month will lay bare the soul of the oldest collection of buildings in the Blue Mountains, revealing the colourful history behind the property. Beginning Saturday, September 10, photo journalist David Hill will present a collection of black and white images of the collection of buildings that are Woodford Academy. Based in Springwood, Mr Hill is a former newspaper photo journalist with an eye for architectural, human and landscape portraiture. “I’m always in search of depth and soul and try to make an emotional connection beyond the superficial with every subject, whether it be food on a plate, a person with a story to tell, light on a landscape or an architectural work like Woodford Academy,’’ he said. Mr Hill said he used black and white photography to capture Woodford Academy because the land and the buildings have a complex past, influenced by so many events and individuals and black and white printing shows this more subtlety without the distraction of colour. “Woodford Academy is not just a few

Photo: David Hill old buildings on the side of the highway, it is a living entity that has a story to tell and a relevance to us today,’’ he said. Woodford Academy Management Committee Deputy Chair, Elizabeth Burgess, said Mr Hill’s images of Woodford Academy are striking and highly detailed. “We are greatly looking forward to presenting these stunning photographs

of the Blue Mountains’ oldest building for our September open days in conjunction with the annual Hazelbrook/Woodford Garden Festival,’’ she said. The exhibition begins at 10am on Saturday, September 10 at Woodford Academy, 90-92 Great Western Highway, Woodford and will run on both Saturday and Sunday for two weeks. Exhibition entry is $6 adults and $4 for a concession.

More than 70 per cent of Australian first home buyers become emotionally invested during their home buying journey, according to research commissioned by St.George Bank. The survey of 1,000 first home buyers reveals over 50 per cent of respondents said their sleep hours suffered and 25 per cent found their productivity at work decreased while house hunting. A significant number of respondents also reported that they missed out on catching up with friends (45.9 per cent), visiting family (34.3 per cent) and doing house work (33.4 per cent) due to the time it took to search for and purchase their first home.

Lacaze FINANCE MATTERS

I, like most of you, love to travel. And probably like most of you, don’t do nearly enough. It was therefore a rather exciting prospect last month, to embark on a two week trip around Vietnam – a beautiful country and well worth putting on your list of future visits. Being an infrequent traveller, the concept of taking travel insurance was important but certainly lagged well behind in the priority stakes for trip necessities. In fact, I think I had mosquito repellent higher up on my to-do list!

The ins and outs of travel insurance

WW24371

owner and manager Investor Tuition investortuition.com.au

Fortunately, after much prompting from my wife I finally made contact with a travel insurance provider for what I believed would be a rather simple and effortless process. And in a way it was, except for one particularly important issue – the pre-existing ailment. No doubt you probably haven’t navigated this life

without picking up some form of medical issue along the way. From a gammy knee to a stent in the ‘old ticker’, the human body will have at times failed us, and according to Murphy’s Law – it usually will reoccur just before or during your much anticipated trip of a lifetime! Well a word of warning, if you haven’t notified your travel insurer of your preexisting medical issues, you are on your own if they suddenly contribute to you seeking medical advice whilst overseas. Travel policies, unless otherwise stated, exclude any cover for pre-existing ailments, and it is up to the traveller to inform the insurer if they want them covered. So if you have any, (and I mean any) previous health issues that may be a problem, you need to get on the phone to your travel insurance provider and organise to have them included in your policy. By the way, you will of course be paying more for your cover as a result of adding these pre-existing ailments, but well worth it if you suddenly find yourself waking up from a three week coma in a private suite at the Mayo clinic surrounded by a group of eminent heart physicians waving their bills!

Do you have Metabolic Syndrome? Metabolic Syndrome is now recognised to be a leading risk factor driving some of the most serious diseases in modern society. How Do You Know If You Have Metabolic Syndrome? You may have been diagnosed with some of the following: • High blood pressure • Low “good” HDL cholesterol • Diabetes or “Pre-diabetes” (at risk for diabetes)

• Carrying extra weight around your waist or a “beer gut”

• High triglycerides

• Family history of diabetes, heart disease or stroke

BUSINESS H How to be happy in business

Statistically speaking: How to plan for the future

S

ometimes business owners aren’t as happy running their business as they thought they would be. Most seem to understand that building a business will take hard work, a large volume of work and a certain amount of stress. But if you are rarely happy in relation to working in your business, perhaps it is time to ask some questions. Some people start businesses that they think will make them a lot of money but they have no passion for the concept or work involved. If this is you, you are unlikely to succeed and you are even more unlikely to ever be happy. Even if you do succeed, you will have tied yourself to a business that you hate. Be sure to go in to business with both a great idea AND a passion for what you do. As stated above, most of us know that successful businesses are hard work, and are not built overnight. You need patience and perseverance. But how much harder is it to exercise those traits if you are unhappy with your day-to-day work?

This is not to say that at times there will be tasks you need to learn that you don’t enjoy, or that you don’t pitch in when there are ‘boring’ jobs to complete. But if those times turn into weeks, months and years, no amount of patience and perseverance is going to result in happiness. It is also important to think about your motivations. If you are working solely to attain material things, you will soon learn that money doesn’t buy happiness. If your goals are entirely about earning a certain figure, you will find yourself unhappy in the leaner times. Whereas if your purpose for running your business are for other benefits, your happiness is not necessarily tied to your financial success. In any case, wealth should be an outcome of your business, not a strategy. Having “get rich quick” as your goal is not only unrealistic, it is also a sure fire way to be UNhappy in business. Align your goals to non-financial values and you are far more likely to have a successful business and the happiness you also no doubt want along the way.

W

ith the dust still settling over the Census, we still need to wait until next year for the demographic data to be updated on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ website. So where can we find up-to-date data to help us plan for the next two-three years of business activity? There are several sources of recent information that we can use in order to plan our estimates. The first source is your local council. Most councils will have an economic development officer – someone who is responsible for fostering business activity in the council’s area. They can provide you with local demographic data to estimate the size of your market. This will enable you to estimate sales. They also have business development programs so it doesn’t hurt to touch base with your local council to see if you can benefit from them. The next source of data is an industry association. Industry associations gather information from their members and are a great source of benchmarking for budgets. They can tell you information about typical profit statement items and

business ratios to help you develop your financial projections. They too may have industry-based development programs to enhance your turnover, or network events to connect with similar businesses in different regions. While we’re talking about benchmarks, the Australian Tax Office’s website has a benchmark section which has figures for typical business types, such as florists, plumbers and accountants. These business types also have different figures based on the amount of annual turnover to help you plan with a greater degree of accuracy. When working these figures into your budget, ensure that you adjust them for inflation projections to give you a realistic estimate. At the Western Sydney Business Centre we subscribe to a service that gathers information from a broad range of businesses and industry sectors. We can use that service to assess if your business is performing well compared to the industry, or if your budgets and plans are realistic. Call one of our advisors today to explore this service.

OUT NOW WON T UO GAME

DVD Captain America: Civil War Rated M // KATE REID

There’s trouble in the Avengers camp in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. After the actions of the team cause collateral damage, the government decides it’s time to intervene. The new system of accountability doesn’t go down so well with Captain America (Chris Evans), who believes superheroes should never be under the constrains of the government. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is in support of the intervention and the pair’s differences lead to a feud which forces Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremey Renner) to choose a side. The all-star cast also includes Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen. The film has received overwhelm-

ingly positive critical reviews, with website Rotten Tomatoes praising the film for its engaging plot that goes beyond the usual one dimensional action superhero blockbuster story line. It’s high praise considering action films are often accused of focusing on visuals over plot. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ has also clearly been a mega hit with audiences, becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time, earning over US$407 million in the US alone. If you’re one of those rare few who have not yet seen the third and best instalment of ‘Captain America’, you can grab a copy in store or online now.

The latest release in the Madden NFL franchise offers new game-play features that can help you lure the defence into a trap, with smart plays designed to disguise your true game play. Work your way towards championship glory with authentic AI and new mechanics, making it feel like you’re right in the middle of a real game. ‘Madden NFL 17’ features new gap play, which allows your defenders to put themselves in a position to stop the run. A host of new moves and game planning means your team will be playing at the top of their game. If you’re an NFL or sporting fan you won’t want to miss out on this one! Grab your copy in store or online now.

The awkwardly narcissistic manager of the Slough branch of Wernham-Hogg paper merchants is back and this time he, and his ego, are taking over the big screen. ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’ is the brainchild of UK comedian Ricky Gervais, who created the popular char-

acter for the hit series ‘The Office’. Though he’s been working as a sales rep, David has always wanted to be a rock star. After making the decision to take a chance on his dreams he heads out on the road, taking his band Foregone Conclusion along for the ride. The film is essentially Gervais’ baby, with the comedian taking on all major roles including writer, director and star. It’s been 15 years since the mocku-

mentary sitcom went to air, and David Brent is still offering audiences plenty of laughs. If you, like many TV viewers, fell in love with the frustratingly funny character you won’t want to miss his return to the screen. ‘David Brent: Life on the Road’, starring Ricky Gervais, is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. Ê It appears viewers won’t be seeing ‘House Husbands’ this year, with Channel Nine delaying airing the new series until 2017. The network was initially scheduled to air the latest season this year but it appears that will not happen. Expect to see it in February now.

AUSTRALIAN SURVIVOR CHANNEL TEN

Ê Channel Seven debuted ‘The Big Music Quiz’ last Sunday night and, I must say, it made Daryl Somers’ ‘You’re Back in the Room’ look half decent. From the overhyped rent-a-crowd to the poor acting by the so-called celebrity contestants, this show is way over-produced and screamed fake. I give it two weeks before it’s buried in a slot to die a slow death. Ê Fortunately, it’s not all bad at Seven because I’m absolutely loving the new series ‘Australia’s Cheapest Weddings’. Ê ABC3 will rebrand to ABC ME from September 19. The channel is repositioning itself as a broadcast/digital service with a new ABC ME app for school-aged kids. New programs will include a weekly pop culture review show ‘News to Me’, sci-fi animation ‘Prisoner Zero’ and shortform documentary series ‘This Is Me’. Ê In case you didn’t notice last week, ‘Australian Survivor’ is now screening three nights a week to compete with ‘The Block’ on Nine and ‘Zumbo’s Just Desserts’ on Seven. I must admit I would’ve preferred the show air two nights a week, but it appears Ten wants to build an audience by showing it regularly. ‘Survivor’ is falling behind the two shows in the ratings with ‘Zumbo’ leading the way. Ê

Everyone’s favourite Christmas tradi-

tion will have a slight change this year when ‘Carols in the Domain’ moves from Saturday night to Sunday. It’s understood Sundays were more “family friendly”, according to Executive Producer, Michael McKay. ‘Carols in the Domain’ will now air on Sunday, December 18.

that its new series ‘I Own Australia’s Best Home’ will premiere at 8.30pm on Wednesday, September 28. The 10-part series features interior designers Gillian Khaw and Tim Leveson, and architect Nick Tobias, living with owners for 24 hours to experience their lifestyle.

Ê ‘I Am Cait’, starring Caitlin Jenner, has been axed by E! after two seasons.

Ê Word is that lead actress Connie Britton will only be appearing in 10 episodes of the upcoming ‘Nashville’ season.

Ê Season two of popular Netflix series ‘Narcos’ began streaming on Friday, September 2. 10 episodes are immediately available. Ê

LifeStyle HOME has announced

Ê Last but not least, fans or perhaps haters of former heartthrob Rob Lowe should check out ‘The Roast of Rob Lowe’, coming to the Comedy Channel this Tuesday, September 6 at 8.30pm.

RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

The celestial message this week is to get the balance right between being feisty and being fair. With mighty Mars charging through Sagittarius until September 27, there’s a fine line between being proactive and just plain pushy. And with Jupiter jumping into your partnership zone (from Friday until October 2017) it’s time to view close relationships from a more philosophical perspective, as you strive to be more compassionate and generous towards loved ones.

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

When it comes to a joint financial arrangement, you need to be proactive and practical. Mars encourages taking action, while Saturn cautions you to do your homework thoroughly first. Jupiter jumps into your wellbeing zone on Friday, which is good news for your physical and emotional health over the next year. There’s one proviso though – you must be disciplined about diet and exercise. As Katharine Hepburn said, “Without discipline, there’s no life at all.”

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Over the next 13 months many gung-ho Geminis will take up a sport or creative project; start a hot romance; go on holiday; or welcome a new addition to the family. But with Mercury still reversing through your domestic zone, you need to do more to create harmony at home. And there may be confusion between relationship responsibilities and work issues on the weekend. So make sure you maintain strict boundaries between what is personal and what is professional.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016

Be especially diplomatic with a recalcitrant relative or neighbour. Perhaps 100 per cent honesty isn’t the best policy, and communication will improve with some creative sugar-coating? From Friday onwards, Jupiter is set to expand your domestic horizons. So you could buy or sell real estate, move house, get a new housemate, or renovate. But, when it comes to education or travel plans, Saturn could bring you down to Earth.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

From Friday onwards, Jupiter blesses all forms of communication as your social media profile really takes off. So the next 13 months is a terrific time to start a blog, launch an online business or expand a current biz. One of your products, campaigns or posts could even go viral, so make sure you have plenty of interesting things to say or sell. On the weekend your Leo imagination is firing but, if you get too carried away, then you’ll blur the boundaries between fact and fantasy.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Mercury is reversing through Virgo which encourages you to re-evaluate a personal project. Don’t make any major changes until after September 22 though. You’re also in the mood to offer advice. Your intentions are well-meant, but people will be extra sensitive so choose your words wisely. And have you been worrying about money? Jupiter journeys through your money zone for the next 13 months, so make the most of the lucky financial opportunities that come your way.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

With Jupiter (planet of confidence and positive thinking) charging into your sign (from Friday until October 2017) it’s time to leave the past behind and live in the here and now. Learn from the mistakes you’ve made, and then move forwards into a bold and brave new world where challenges are welcome and adventure is compulsory. This week draw inspiration from writer D. H. Lawrence, born on September 11, 1885: “I want to live my life so that my nights are not full of regrets.”

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

On Wednesday (courtesy of Pluto) you’ll feel powerful, passionate and perceptive. From Friday onwards, Jupiter broadens your spiritual perspective and many deep-thinking Scorpios will take up meditation, yoga or some other form of metaphysical study over the next 13 months. But a close relationship with a loved one becomes very confusing on the weekend, when neither of you are sure where you stand.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

On Friday Jupiter shifts into Libra. So – over the next 13 months – do your best to bring more balance and harmony into your stressful Sagittarian life. It’s also a period when the power of the group is on your side. You’ll attract good luck and achieve great success if you work cooperatively with others to find win-win solutions to problems. It takes extra time but is well worth the effort, and will result in creative cross-pollination and positive outcomes for everyone.

LIFE & STYLE

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

This week Jupiter moves into your career zone. Which bodes well for a promotion, big new job or lucky professional break coming your way over the next 13 months. But your ruler Saturn squares nebulous Neptune on Saturday, so expect a weekend of unsettling uncertainty. The less organised you are, the more confusing things will be. Cut to the chase Capricorn, as you strive to differentiate between what is essential and what is superfluous.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

With Jupiter moving into your travel zone, foreign shores beckon over the next 13 months. So start planning your itinerary now. It’s also important to keep up-todate with your international contacts. But money matters look complicated, as extra expenses surface or cracks appear in a financial partnership. And don’t let a friend or business acquaintance take you for a fiscal ride. Check the cold hard facts before you make promises or sign agreements.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

The Saturn/Neptune square highlights the discrepancy between fact and fantasy. Are you seeing things clearly? Are you blurring the boundaries between truth and fiction? Are you avoiding challenges by burying your head in the sand? It’s time for a reality check as you reassess your life and where you are going. Pisceans are trusting folk, but don’t let a dubious acquaintance lead you up the primrose path to trouble.

f a bulk-buy looks to be in order as the white for that next dinner party but you don’t want to appear to being something of a cheapskate by sacrificing quality for price, satisfy quality and price with McGuigan’s 2015 Black Label Chardonnay (pictured). Because here’s a great drop that’s just $10 a bottle – and as little as $8, you’ll be wondering why it’s not up to nearly double that. Blended from fruit from across south-eastern Australia, this is a wine that’s rich with tropical-fruit and melon flavours, has a touch of oak and an almost creamy palate, and not surprisingly has been the cornerstone white of the highly-popular Black Label range for many years. Great to kick-off that dinner party with pre-mains finger foods, it’s then equally at home with a whole range of main-course fish, chicken, pork or creamy pasta dishes. One to note: If you’re into your roast beef, and the more-so with a peppery sauce that’s just spicy enough to give it that little extra oomph, an ideal wine to pair it with is Katnook’s 2015 Founder’s Block Shiraz out of Coonawarra. From a vintage that enjoyed warm summer days and cool nights that were ideal for flavour composition, this is a wine with lovely raspberry and plum fruit flavours, varietal Shiraz pepper and spice overtones and noticeable but not over-powerful oak. Coonawarra is more well-known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but makers like Katnook have for some time now been producing equally impressive Shiraz. If you’re not so much into peppery sauces as suggested above, other great food matches with this one are grilled lamb chops or barbecued bratwurst sausages.

he Panthers made netball history when they became the first team to win the inaugural Netball NSW Premier League Under 20’s competition. The Panthers team – which was made up of players and staff from the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury District Netball Associations – took out the all-important decider with a convincing 63-50 victory over minor premiers UTS St George Sparks. However, despite the dominant final scoreline, the Panthers didn’t exactly have it all go their own way, with the Sparks enjoying an early 15-8 lead. Fortunately, the Panthers were able to rally and even took a slight 29-25 lead at the halftime break. The Sparks got off to a great start in the second half, returning fire early to draw level. However, just when it looked like the girls from UTS may go on with it, the Panthers came storming back to lead by nine heading into the final quarter. The Panthers were in total control during the fourth, with the Sparks unable to claw their way back despite giving it their all. Speaking with the Record, Panthers coach

The Under 20’s Panthers team are Netball NSW Premier League champions. Photo: Nigel Owen/Netball NSW Jaqua Heddle said it was an amazing effort to defeat the competition leaders. “UTS were minor premiers and we actually never beat them during the season. They

were the only team in the competition that we couldn’t beat until the Grand Final,” she said. “Our team is a really young side, so to achieve what they have is remarkable.”
