Plant thieves face the music in court Blaxland pair who targeted nurseries and homes plead guilty but evidence of their loot still remains ERIN MAMO

lant thieves who stole over 45 different plants and garden ornaments in the Blue Mountains region earlier this year have now been sentenced.

Between January and April this year, thieves began targeting nurseries and private residencies from Glenbrook to Wentworth Falls, taking plants, large pots and garden ornaments.

In June, two males and one female from Blaxland were arrested for the crimes after police executed a search warrant on their property.

On Friday, September 16, the 41-year-old female from Blaxland pleaded guilty at Penrith Local Court to numerous offences, including eight counts of goods in custody.

However, her charges were dismissed under Section 32 of the Mental Health Act, with the magistrate discharging her under the condition that she be cared for by a responsible person.

The male, who also lives at the same Blaxland address as the woman, was charged and convicted with entering property and was handed a $200 fine.

The second man is due to appear at Penrith Local Court today for mention.

Evidence of the stolen goods still remain in the front yard of the pair’s Blaxland property Glenbrook Village Nursery was one of the many nurseries that had stock stolen earlier this year.

In one weekend the thieves stole $1,000 worth of garden products, including bonsai plants and starter kits, pots of flowering plants and two metal emu ornaments.

Alison McKertich, who owns the nursery with her sister Wendy, said she was disap-

pointed to hear the court had taken a soft stance.

“We are disappointed that the outcome was so lenient,” Ms McKertich said.

“We hope that this will be the end of theft in the area and deter people from doing anything like this in the future.”

Surprisingly, the convicted individuals have been allowed to keep many of the plants that they stole.

Blue Mountains Crime Manager, Dietmar Almar, said that due to there being many of the same species of plant, it made it difficult to identify who owns what.

“Because there were numerous grass trees and tree ferns stolen, it is hard to identify which one belongs to who,” Mr Almar said.

Springwood Police said plant theft has dropped significantly since the arrests.

he Federal Government claims to have listened to the community in regards to the new airport at Badgerys Creek by removing single merge points over residential areas, including the controversial points in Blaxland.

The new flight paths were outlined in the Final Badgerys Creek Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released last Thursday.

A discussion paper was also released last week that recommended rail links between the future Western Sydney Airport (WSA) and other areas across Sydney.

Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher, said in addition to setting out that there will be no single merge points over residential communities and none over Blaxland, the EIS sets out new noise guidelines.

“The final EIS sets out an important preferred option for ‘head-to-head operations’ during evening hours (11pm to 6am) as a means of minimising the number of homes affected by aircraft noise at night,” he said.

“Head-to-head operations will involve

He said there is more detailed work to

do to analyse weather and safety, but this operating mode could be available over 80 per cent of the time.

In the discussion paper for a rail link from

the airport, Mr Fletcher said the options were designed to connect key areas of a growing western Sydney.

“Among other proposals, there have been calls for an express train running east-west between WSA and the Sydney CBD, as well as for a suburban train running north-south from Campbelltown to Rouse Hill via WSA,” he said.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said a north-south rail link is transformative, and other options such as a fast link to Parramatta and onto the Sydney CBD is a slap in the face for hundreds of thousands of people who travel away from Penrith for work each day.

“Western Sydney is already chronically under serviced by public transport – unless you travel east to the Sydney CBD. It’s almost impossible to travel south west or north west via public transport,” she said.

“I know most people in our community would be gravely offended if the State and Federal Government decided it’s OK for us to wear all the impacts of an airport but see none of the benefits.”

All aboard, an unsafe train home Train guards set to be phased out from 2019 with the introduction of new intercity fleet ERIN MAMO

rains to the Blue Mountains could soon be unmanned and unsafe with new Government documents suggesting the abolishment of train guards.

In a recent tender document for its ‘New Intercity Fleet’ project, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) indicated it was looking to remove train guards permanently.

The New Intercity Fleet will replace the ageing V-Set trains that operate over long distances from Central to Lithgow via the Blue Mountains.

In Parliament last week, Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, called on the Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, to guarantee that the jobs of train guards who work on the Blue Mountains will remain.

Ms Doyle said taking away train guards will create countless issues for passengers and spark safety concerns.

“The guard is the person who takes charge in the event of an accident, fatality or delay,” she said.

“It is the guard that assists passengers in a wheelchair on or off the train.

“On late night trips to remote, unstaffed

stations, the presence of a dedicated train guard is crucial to passengers feeling safe on our trains.”

The new trains, which are set to be under driver-only operation, wont have real-time monitoring of the on-board CCTV systems or local response to on-board passenger emergency intercoms.

There is also no expectation that drivers or customer service assistants would provide assistance to passengers during an evacuation or emergency.

According to the TfNSW tender document, the removal of train guards on Blue Mountains trains could begin as early as 2019.

A spokesperson for NSW TrainLink said the Government will be working closely with safety regulators to ensure that any changes made in the near future meet high standards of safety.

“We have been consulting with staff representatives and unions about any potential changes to our operations,” the spokesperson said.

“Guards will have continued employment until 2019 and then they will be progressively phased out.”

Once the roll-out of the new trains begin, guards will be given retraining and redeployment opportunities.

Spring blooms large in Leura Back for its 52nd year, the crowd-pleasing Leura Gardens Festival promises to be a feast for the eyes ERIN MAMO

f you needed more convincing that spring has well and truly sprung then the Leura Gardens Festival is sure to cast away any doubt.

Back for its 52nd year, the festival will showcase 13 spectacular gardens throughout the Upper Mountains community when it kicks starts on October 1 to 9.

President of the Leura Gardens Festival, Brooke Broughgon, said visitors to the Leura properties can expect to see a variety of beautiful spring flowers flourishing in a cooler climate.

“There will be azaleas, rhododendrons, cherry blossoms, many different varieties of daffodils and other spring flowers, depending on the weather on the day of course,” Mr Broughgon said.

This year there are three new gardens joining the festival as well as several crowd favourites including, ‘Tanglewood’ at 109 Craigend Street and ‘DeadEnd House’ at 32 Fitzroy Street, that are returning.

Everglades Historic House and Gardens and The Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort will also be part of the festival.

The Waldorf will offer ‘Music in the Gardens,’ showcasing local bands and

singers every afternoon from 1pm during the festival.

Acts you can expect to see in the gardens include the Penrith City Big Band and the Blue Mountains Ukelele Group.

As part of the festival there will also be plant sales at Leura Golf Club, which will have a large range of both native and exotic plants to buy that are suited to most climate types.

Like in the years before, all proceeds of the festival will go towards the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital.

Since the festival’s establishment in 1965, organisers have raised more than $2.5 million for the hospital.

Volunteers also play an important role in the community event with over 400 committing to helping out again this year.

Mr Broughgon said the festival wouldn’t be able to run if it wasn’t for the selfless volunteers and talented and dedicated green thumbs.

“Without the garden owners we wouldn’t have a festival and without our volunteers we couldn’t run it,” he said.

Tickets are $25 per person for an allgardens ticket and $5 per person for an individual garden ticket.

Free program for small businesses TAFE Western Sydney and Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber join forces to offer free training ERIN MAMO

tart-ups and small businesses wishing to update their skills are being offered the chance to do so for free after TAFE Western Sydney Institute and Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber (BMRBC) joined forces to deliver a custom-designed program for micro businesses in the area.

President of BMRBC, Peita Davies, said both TAFE and the Regional Business Chamber recognise and acknowledge that the region has become the home of micro businesses in recent years and that there is a need to offer affordable training options.

Micro businesses refers to home-based businesses or small businesses that occupy limited space.

She said the two organisations joining forces is a match made in heaven.

“We have put our heads together to provide valuable, free pathways to essential information on baseline plans that will contribute to the success of a business,” Ms Davies said.

“The program will also give businesses the opportunity to rethink their business strategy while getting some qualifications to do what they do well.”

On completion of the program, graduates can expect to have a business plan,

marketing plan, financial projections and a social media strategy and policy.

The initiative will also directly align with the nationally accredited small business qualifications.

Robin Shreve, Director of TAFE Western Sydney Institute, said the program will aim to build on the preliminary skills that graduates of the TAFE course, ‘Chambers Small Business MasterClass’ have and give them a more in-depth training.

“This exciting initiative is custom designed for start-ups and those businesses wishing to update their small business skills,” Mr Shreve said.

The new program will include units like ‘Small Business Planning’, ‘Small Business Finance Management’ and ‘Using Social Media to Engage Customers’.

Once an individual completes these units they can then be used as credits to go towards the TAFE’s Certificate IV or Diploma in New Small Business, if they choose to engage in further study.

TAFE Western Sydney and BMRBC will hold an information and enrolment session for their free program on Monday, October 10 at the TAFE Wentworth Falls campus from 6pm.

The Regional Business Chamber also provides other heavily subsidised small business training programs through the Western Sydney Business Enterprise Centre.

ost often, business advice is full of things that you should do. But sometimes it is good to know what not to do, and what mistakes to avoid.

Keep decision making simple. When I send a client the first concepts for a logo, I advise them not to show those concepts to others.

My advice is always to wait until the concept has been honed to a more final stage, and then gather feedback. And I strongly advise them to seek feedback from the ‘right’ people (for example, people within their target market).

Otherwise, you waste time considering opinions from irrelevant sources.

The same is true of any business decision. I am not advocating ignoring other people’s advice entirely, but by soliciting feedback from the most relevant people, you will have higher quality feedback on which to base your decision.

Avoid constant idea generation. I am not suggesting that you should stop dreaming big and coming up with new ideas for your business.

But some business owners are too busy thinking of the next idea, and don’t spend time to make any of them a reality. It can be counterproductive to throw ideas into the mix faster than you can put them into action.

The ‘lightbulb’ moment for your business won’t be the initial idea, it will be the realisation of how to turn that idea into a successful outcome.

Know when to quit. This can be difficult to discern. Most business owners are wired to want to succeed and are determined to make their business ‘work’.

We all know it takes tremendous amounts of blood, sweat and tears to succeed. But we all need to know the limits, which are going to be different for each of us.

If you have become someone that you no longer recognise or someone you don’t want to be; if you have lost your passion for your work; if you have no time for anything other than your business; these may be signs that it is time to quit. Or at the very least, to take some time out from your business to regain what you have lost.

y predecessor, Michael Todd, passed on an article from a Western Australian blogger which discussed typical mistakes made during the business start-up process. Being an optimist at heart, I believe we should focus on the things you should do rather than the actions you should avoid. So here are a few points to get you started: 1. Understand what your product or service does for your customer. You need to convince your customer that your product or service is for them. To do that, you need to understand how your product or service will make your customer happy and then reinforce the happy experience at all contact points.

2. Charge correctly for your skills, expertise, time and imagination. Underselling your service or your craft sends a very bad message to customers as well as your bottom line. That message is: “my time is worth less than this product”. So prospective customers are more likely to turn away.

Here is a true story: One artist was selling her finished jewellery for $5 an item. This

is the equivalent price of jewellery from a chain store. Why? The artist was charging only for the materials and not for the time in making the jewellery. She saw other people charging more and selling similar items, so she increased her price fourfold and now her work sells very well.

The increase in price sent a message that said: “I spent a lot of time, love and effort on this” and people are happy to pay appropriately.

3. Seek advice and assistance. You are not in the business by yourself. Yes, you may be a sole trader, but you are not a solo trader. Running a business takes a lot of different skills and abilities. Some of them you may not have. So if you feel that recording transactions is dull, find somebody who loves to get their hands wet. If you want a website, but you can’t html like a pro – find that pro!

cenic World will host a wildlife extravaganza in an ancient rainforest these school holidays.

‘Take Flight’, an interactive bird show, will run for one week from October 1 and gives children and their families the chance to get up close to threatened species in a safe environment.

Head of Marketing and Events at Scenic World, Amanda Byrne, said Scenic World is thrilled to present the show.

“Two stars of the show, Tyto the Masked Owl and Terry the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, are threatened species so the chance to see them like this is definitely one for the school holiday bucket list,” she said.

Ravi Wasan, the founder of Feathered Friends – a sanctuary for sick and injured birds in western Sydney – will host the show and said the rainforest of the Jamison Valley is the perfect location.

“Not only is it the bird’s native habitat, but the valley is a natural amphitheatre and a perfect place to see these amazing birds take flight,” Mr Wasan said.

The show is free with admission to Scenic World and runs for 20 minutes.

They took over our phone screens and now they’re taking over our TV screens with the release of ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ on DVD and BluRay. The film is set on an island inhabited by flightless birds. Though most of the birds are happy there are a few outsiders who have a much more surly demeanour.

Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad) and volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) may be the black sheep of the group but when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, they’re the unlikely heroes called upon to figure out what the pigs are up to.

‘The Angry Birds Movie’ features a whole heap of stars including Maya

Rudolph, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, Sean Penn, Kate McKinnon and Tituss Burgess.

The soundtrack is a pretty star studded affair as well with tracks from Blake Shelton, Demi Lovato, Charli XCX and Steve Aoki.

An app to film adaptation is a clear sign of the times and, while ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ may have received mixed reviews from critics, it’s likely to only be the start of more of these types of app to film crossovers.

A

ussie wine buffs, it seems, are suddenly discovering Tempranillo. A Spanish red that, although being grown in this country on cuttings brought from its motherland around the 1830s, for some reason never really took off.

But towards the end of last century things suddenly changed. To meet the newly burgeoning demand, the area of vineyards turned over to the variety blossomed from a mere 41ha Australia-wide, to over 475ha in just 10 years to 2010. And sales of resultant wines are today growing at a rate said to be faster than any other variety.

One maker with an exceptional Tempranillo is the Clare Valley’s Mr Mick Wines. Its 2014 variety is a full-bodied drop with pronounced varietal cherry and strawberry fruit flavours, a hint of spice and a long and lingering finish It makes a great drop paired with the homeland favourite, patatas con chorizo (potatoes with chorizo sausage and chilli), that you could possibly say equates to something a bit like a Spanish bangers and mash. At $17 enjoy it with that homeland dish, or equally with tacos, nachos or burritos.

One to note: Tasmanian makers have thrown up some ripper Rieslings over the years.

One such maker is Riversdale Estate in the southern Coal River Valley region just 20km out of Hobart. It recently released a beautifully rewarding 2013 Riesling under its ultra-premium, Cygnus, label. It’s a wine made from fruit harvested in small bunches in peak-condition, and is loaded with concentrated varietal characteristics and excellent natural acidity. RRP $34.

he Western Sydney Wanderers captured their first Powerchair Premiership when they defeated five-time champions, Newcastle, last weekend in Mount Druitt.

round of the competition to determine the Football NSW Powerchair Premier League champion for 2016.

With no Finals series, a draw was all the Wanderers needed to claim their maiden trophy as they were slightly ahead on goal differential.

In what can be described as an exhausting encounter, the Wanderers led 1-0 at half-time before holding out a determined

Jets outfit in the second half to win 2-0.

Speaking with the Record, Erskine Park resident and Wanderers utility player Alex Scollard said winning the Powerchair Premiership was a long time coming.

“It was amazing to be crowned premiers, it’s taken us a long time,” he said.

“I haven’t played a game of football with so much passion from myself and my teammates.

“I’m proud to be a part of the club. I love the red and black.”

The Wanderers Powerchair team comprises of six players which includes two wingers, a mid-fielder, goalkeeper and two reserves.

Scollard, who came off the interchange bench in the all-important decider, said he was desperate to make an impact.

“I just badly wanted to get my hands on that trophy,” the 20-year-old said.

“I wanted to make myself proud, my club proud and my family proud.”

Just like at every Wanderers home game, the club’s famous Red and Black Bloc (RBB) supporter base were out in force last Saturday at Kevin Betts Stadium.

Scollard, a Wanderers member for four seasons, said the support his side received from the passionate crowd helped them get over the line.

“Being a Wanderer is amazing – the RBB always come up and talk to us because they love that we play for the club that they support. They don’t care if we win, lose or draw,” he said.

The Wanderers Powerchair team will now put their ‘premiers’ tag to the test when they battle against other clubs around the country for the A-League Club Championship in January.

he Blue Mountains Roller Derby League team have stamped their authority, coming second at the recent 5x5 Roller Derby Championship.

The Free Sisters, who have spent the last six months travelling as part of the round robin competition, were one of 10 teams across two divisions all vying for overall top spot.

In the 5x5 Battlegrounds division, the team cemented their reputation, making it to the final but missing out on the win, which was claimed by the home side, Central Coast Roller Derby team, 221-101 at Niagra Park Stadium.

BMRDL President, Andrew Hainsworth, aka ‘spirit fingers’ said the roller derby team was extremely excited to be invited to the annual round robin again this year.

“The Free Sisters wanted to show the other teams in the Battlegrounds division how much they have improved over the last 12 months,” Hainsworth said.

“We are very proud of their success.”

The team is no stranger to the 5x5 championship, having finished fourth last year.

Next up, they will compete in the Eastern Region Roller Derby Championship on the Central Coast over the October long weekend.
