“A plane every two to three minutes” Airport passengers in 2015 according to Airports Council International:
DALE DRINKWATER
western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek is expected to one day have more passengers through its terminals than today’s busiest international airports. Its forecast 82 million passengers per year is more than current international airports at Dubai, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) predicts that by 2050, 37 million passengers will walk through western Sydney airport’s terminals, which will blow out to 82 million by 2063. Vice President of the Residents Against Western Sydney Airport, Paul Goleby, said by 2063 that will mean around 370,000 flights per year. “Without a curfew, that is about a plane every two to three minutes,” he said. “The reality is that this is put forward as a 24 hours a day, seven days a week airport.” The Federal Department of Infrastructure’s Western Sydney Airport website confirms a western Sydney airport has always been planned to operate on a curfew-free basis. It outlined demand for flights at night would be less than during the day, and the majority of flights would be in the 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm peak periods.

To handle the 82 million passengers, the airport will have two runways operating,
leaving the direction of flights and location of merge points open. “The final EIS says they are not doing any design on flight paths until a couple of years out... they could go anywhere,” Mr Goleby added. “We believe it’s a bad decision that’s going to have an impact on people in western Sydney for years to come... It’s a legacy we leave on to children and grand-
children.” A spokesperson for Penrith Council said both the 2050 and 2063 scenarios give more reason to have the right infrastructure surrounding the airport. “Regardless of the two operational scenarios addressed in the EIS, it is important for the infrastructure to be relevant to western Sydney,” he said. Council believes a north-south rail line would transform the region.

On The Record
Mike Baird had every right to go into the 2019 State Election as a clear favourite, but his greyhound racing ban threatened to make him a huge underdog. The Premier was left with very little choice but to back down from his decision to axe the greyhound industry if he wanted to save his political career. But questions will now be raised over whether Mr Baird has put his political life
Julie McCrossin to host film night
ahead of the welfare of animals, which he originally said was at significant risk if the greyhound industry continued. Despite crowds of only a few hundred turning up at race tracks and greyhound racing being something of a forgotten pastime in Sydney, the ban really grabbed the attention of the entire state. I doubt Mr Baird ever predicted the political storm this story ultimately
became. The whole thing has been an embarrassment to his government. The question now is whether the right decision was made in the end and if the greyhound industry really does have what it takes to reform. The critics of the ban may have been very loud, but I get the feeling the silent majority still think Mr Baird did the right thing in the first place.

Crime-Writing Forum
Whodunit? Head to the library to find out! ERIN MAMO
urder, mystery and scandal will descend on the Mountains this weekend, but it’s not your typical crime wave. This Saturday Springwood Library will host a special event that will see some of the country’s top crime writers sharing their blood-stained stories. At the event, ‘Blue Mountains Library’s Books to Die For’, guests will be treated to an exciting journey into the action-packed world of mysteries, thrillers, whodunits and true crime, all without leaving the Mountains. Five of Australia’s top award-winning crime authors will take part in the crimewriting forum, including Dr Rachel Franks, who tells the tales of a private investigator, and Jaye Ford, whose book Beyond Fear was the highest selling debut crime novel in Australia in 2011. Candice Fox, Author of a fictional series of crime books and winner of the prestigious Ned Kelly Award two years in a row, will also speak about how she came to write her latest novel, Never Never. Ms Fox grew up in the south-western suburb of Bankstown with her parents who ran a foster home.
M
She said it was most likely here that her fascination with crime was triggered. “At any given time we had foster children coming to stay at our house,” Ms Fox said. “I think that’s where my interest in crime began. “Police were always wandering in and out, telling my parents these stories about where the children had come from, and I listened.” Never Never is a collaboration with American crime-writing godfather James Patterson and tells the story of Harriet Blue, a Sydney Detective. Harriet has been moved to the Western Australian outback in an attempt to get out of Sydney after her brother has just been convicted of murder, and like any good crime novel, trouble follows her in her bid to stay safe. Other authors who will be at the event include action-thriller expert Chris Allen as well as Peter Doyle whose writing is based on research into the Forensic Photography Archive at the Justice and Police Museum, Sydney. The forum will run from 10am to 1pm at the Springwood Library on Macquarie Road. Tickets are $15 and include mid-morning refreshments and the chance to win a mystery book pack.

‘Mountain Goats’ climbing for a cause Local firies to make a mad dash up Sydney’s tallest tower in a bid to stamp out Motor Neurone Disease ERIN MAMO
f walking up a couple of flights of stairs leaves you short of breath, imagine the heart palpitations you’d endure racing up 98 floors lugging an extra 20 kilos on your back. That’s the gruelling challenge confronting a number of local firies, who have put up their hands to go head-to-head with 445 of their colleagues from across the country this weekend in a dash up Sydney’s Centre Point Tower. On Sunday, Retained Firefighters from Glenbrook Fire Station and Volunteers from Glenbrook Rural Fire Service will participate in the ‘Fire Fighters Climb for MND’ to raise funds for Macquarie University’s Motor Neurone Disease Research Centre. Retained Firefighter, Brendon Roberts, said he is putting his fitness to the test in a show of solidarity for his colleague, Matty Pridham. “Matty started the climb last year for his best mate, Adam Regal, who became confined to a wheelchair due to suffering from MND, so I wanted to do it for him,” he said. “I’m also doing my bit because my wife’s

uncle passed away from MND and I’ve got a five-month-old who I would like to see grow up in a world where the disease doesn’t exist.” If madly dashing up 1504 stairs wasn’t enough, each of the charitable firefighters taking part in the climb will be dressed in 20 kilos of turnout fire gear, including a structural jacket and trousers, a helmet, suspenders and firefighting boots. MND is a progressive disease where the nerve cells controlling the muscles that allow a person to move, speak and breathe degenerate and die. With no nerves to activate muscles, the muscles gradually weaken and waste away. In Australia, two people die from MND every day. The 301 Mountain Goats, as the Glenbrook firies affectionately call themselves, are aiming to raise $10,000, with $6,173 pocketed so far. The Research Centre relies solely on donations from the public to continue its work towards finding a cure. Last year’s inaugural ‘Fire Fighters Climb for MND’ was a massive hit, raising $180,000 for the cause. To donate, visit the 301 Mountain Goats Everyday Hero page at www.firefightersclimbformnd.everydayhero.com/au/301mountain-goats.

Facelift for Park and Visitor Centre Blue Mountains City Council awarded $700k to upgrade Glenbrook Park and Visitor Information Centre ERIN MAMO
lenbrook Park and the Visitor Information Centre along the highway will be upgraded thanks to the Federal Government. Recently, Blue Mountains City Council was awarded funding for an upgrade of both facilities under round three of the Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, said the tourism-based project in the Blue Mountains has been approved to receive $699,985. “The upgrade will deliver for tourists and locals by enhancing Glenbrook as the ‘Gateway to the Blue Mountains’,” Ms Payne said. In 2015, the Regional Strategic Alliance of Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury City Councils submitted a business case to Destination NSW recommending that these three regions participate as a new tourism entity. Ms Payne said now the approved funding will allow for the current information centre to be upgraded to a regional tourism centre that includes the neighbouring councils.
G
Glenbrook’s Visitor Information Centre will be upgraded to a regional tourism centre “The upgrade of the Glenbrook Visitor Information Centre to a regional tourism centre will incorporate the proposed Regional Tourism Organisation covering the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and
Penrith,” she said. Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, said the local projects benefiting under the initiative will make a huge difference to their communities.

“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and quality local infrastructure is a big part of that,” Ms Nash said. “Whether it’s cultural and healthcare facilities, tourism infrastructure or a great sports precinct, I’m proud to be delivering in Macquarie.” 479 applications were lodged under round three of the Stronger Regions Fund and only the best were successful. Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, welcomed the announcement and said the funding will benefit both Glenbrook and the wider Blue Mountains area. “Glenbrook Park is a favourite with families, not just in the lower Mountains, but across the city,” he said. “The project supports Council’s plan to ensure that Glenbrook Park is of a District Park standard,” he added. Over the coming weeks the Council will be finalising its plans and releasing more details about exactly what the upgrade to both the Glenbrook Visitors Centre and Glenbrook Park will include. A full list of successful round three National Stronger Regions Fund projects is currently available at www.infrastructure.gov.au.

Save on funeral costs with Simplicity Funerals
ADVERTORIAL
The huge elephant in the room is knowing that one day we will cease to exist. Our inherent squeamishness around talking about the practicalities of death is on the decline, where the Baby Boomers particularly are freely talking about how they plan to go. The families who come to us in their time of need are from all walks of life. They are people who are in an incredibly vulnerable position and want to arrange a farewell with simplicity and with someone they can trust. The cost of life’s final unavoidable journey continues to rise, however you can do something about that now. When you prearrange and prepay a funeral, you can leave your loved ones with fond memories, not the cost of a funeral. Prepaying your funeral with Simplicity Funerals is not only one way to protect your family from having to find funds at a difficult time; in many cases it will also be the best way to achieve this. When you prepay a funeral you are locking in today’s price, which means you are protected from inflation. Along with this protection, you will also have the added benefit of knowing the price up front and, when paid in full, there is no more to pay. Compare this with, say, a funeral insurance policy where you may face ongoing premiums that will add up over time – this means you can end up paying more for the funeral insurance policy than the value of the actual funeral.
Simplicity Funerals is also able to offer you the financial benefit that only comes from dealing with the champion of the affordable funeral. Simplicity Funerals specialises in providing respectful funeral services that won’t break the bank. This becomes of greater importance when your funds are limited due to other financial commitments, or when you are on a fixed income. Did you know that if you don’t have a pre-paid funeral and don’t have the financial capacity to pay for a loved one’s funeral, we may be able to assist you access your own or a family members Super, to fund a funeral through the Government Early Release Superannuation Program? This is one of the many reasons you should speak to Simplicity Funerals and learn more about arranging a funeral you can afford. Additionally, when the time comes, your family and loved ones will have a caring and experienced funeral director from Simplicity Funerals by their side, to help them in their time of need, and to respectfully conduct the funeral according to your wishes. For all of the families we have the honour of serving, we also offer a free online memorial service through Heaven Address, a website where family and friends can write tributes, messages, light a candle or send virtual flowers regardless of where you are in the world. Simplicity Funerals has more than 35 years’ experience in arranging prepaid funerals and for delivering those services with dignity, exceptional care and respect. This makes a prepaid funeral from Simplicity the obvious choice for those looking to take care of those they leave behind.
That is why Simplicity Funerals has been so active in informing the community about the real differences between a prepaid funeral and a funeral insurance policy.

New train fleet too wide for tracks Transport for NSW confident new trains will be able to run in Mountains despite concerns ERIN MAMO
ender documents for the New Intercity Fleet train project have revealed the new trains won’t fit past Springwood station. According to Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle, the trains will not physically fit on the tracks, at platforms or in tunnels unless costly rectification works are undertaken between Springwood and Mount Victoria. “The Government have jumped headfirst into a project without actually running the measuring tape over the narrowest point the trains have to pass through,” Ms Doyle said. “The new trains are to be built to an approximate width of 3.1 metres and current limitations on the line mandate a maximum train width of approximately 2.9 metres. “This makes them too wide to travel past Springwood without major engineering works at platforms, and realignment or widening of tight bends and narrow tunnels through the Mountains.” But Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is confident that the new intercity fleet will be able to operate along the entire Blue

An artist’s impression of what the new trains will look like Mountains line to Lithgow. An agency spokesperson said it has always been its intention to carry out some modifications to the rail infrastructure to standardise the journey through the Mountains. “We’ve designed the new trains with the unique needs of our intercity customers in
mind and we can’t wait for them to jump aboard,” the spokesperson said. The new trains are being built in South Korea by overseas designers and manufacturers, including Hyundai Rotem, whose trains were recently withdrawn from service by the Pennsylvania Transit Authority after cracking was found in
structural sections of the carriages. There is also the possibility that the new trains will be longer than current models, meaning even more inaccessible carriages for passengers getting on and off at stations such as Linden and Warrimoo, where an eight-car train is already too long for the platform.

This week is National Nutrition Week. The main focus of the initiative is the ‘Try For 5’ challenge, which encourages people to eat five serves of vegetables every day for a week. Now I know this is a subject that nutrition experts tend to bang on about, but it’s for a good reason. Increasing your vegetable intake is hands down the best way to improve your diet and help reduce the risk of chronic disease like diabetes and heart disease. If you’re not getting enough vegetables in your
kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
diet, here’s some tips to get the ball rolling:. • Include meat free meals into your diet. If you have a friend who’s vegetarian/vegan ask them for some tips. • Boiled soggy broccoli is disgusting; stir fried broccoli with garlic, sesame oil and chili is delicious. Knowing how to prepare veggies will
make a huge difference. • Who doesn’t love a roast? Stick those veggies in the oven with some olive oil, garlic and thyme and top with a little gravy when they’re done. • If you’re a veggie-phobe try hiding them in pies, stews, casseroles, pasta dishes, curries, etc. • Get together with friends for dinner and have a ‘veggie feast’, with each person bringing a dish that includes their favourite vegetable. • If you don’t like the idea of eating veggies on their own then get saucy! It’s much better to eat vegetables with tomato sauce than not eating them at all. • Keep a bag of frozen vegetables on hand. They’re just as nutritious as fresh and easier to prep. • Go with what you enjoy, even if it means eating a few serves of the same veggies/salad. • Try a veggie restaurant/ cafe. Chefs who specialise in vegetarian cooking tend to know the secrets to making plant foods taste amazing. • Don’t beat yourself up. If you don’t get to five serves that’s fine, any increase is a step in the right direction.

Yes readers, back when mobile phones were only available mounted in your car, some people were using the system of retirement saving for alternative purposes which may not have specifically meant retirement. Impossible these days, but back then an SMSF could invest in almost anything that remotely resembled an ‘asset’ – exotic cars and boats being at the top of the list. Those days have long gone and today the SMSF is a valid and very useful investment vehicle when used correctly. But remember, the ‘S’ in SMSF stands for “Self” which is probably the most attractive feature of the product. So if you are considering moving your funds into a SMSF, make sure you are prepared to take on the investment responsibility. Having to pay an adviser for investment advice is adding a level of cost that could be easily avoided and really defeats the purpose of opening a SMSF in the first place. And if you don’t feel you have the knowledge, just go out and get it. There are plenty of courses available to hone your skills.

Having been in the advice business for such a long time, I have witnessed the ‘do it yourself’ concept move from a trickle to a veritable Warragamba Dam wall failure. As a consequence, the notion of “I can do better” has resulted in the tremendous growth of Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF), with all manner of people deciding to chart their own course when it comes to retirement investments. Back in the day, the SMSF was always seen as the exclusive terrain of the ‘astute business person’, normally

ast year my family got involved in triathlons (my husband and children participate and I manage them!). Aside from the benefits and enjoyment of the sport itself, we have greatly enjoyed the friendly and supportive nature of everyone involved. While participants are certainly competing to perform at their best, the encouragement between competitors, and the emphasis on helping each other succeed, is unlike anything we have seen before. This was highlighted recently when my youngest child was having a go at his first mini triathlon. He was far behind all the other boys, and while they waited for him to finish, one of the fathers encouraged them all to run the last lap with my son so that he wasn’t finishing by himself. So they all joined him on the last lap, cheering him on (along with all the parents). Afterwards, one of the boys shook my son’s hand and told him “well done”. It was such a lovely display of sportsmanship, done without patronising my son and giving him encouragement to keep
doing his best. My son felt valued and encouraged even though he came last, and the other boys learnt how to be gracious and supportive. I wonder if local and small business would better thrive if we had this model and attitude in our business communities? I have definitely witnessed positive moments like this in some business circles. But I have also witnessed far too much of the opposite behaviour that correlates more with ‘winning at any cost’. Collaborative approaches to conducting business are viewed by many business owners as contrary to success. In some cases, they may be correct: it doesn’t make good business sense to share all your ‘secrets’. But I do wonder whether the desire to be ‘the best’ leaves some of us a bit jaded and wondering what the point of being in business is all about? Could being less worried about ‘competing’ and more concerned with supporting each other in our business journeys, result in far more satisfaction in our achievements?
S
ole Traders and Partners who employ people know that they are required to put aside superannuation for their employees. But there is no requirement for them to set aside their own super. According to the Association of Super Funds of Australia, only 29 per cent of self-employed people have super funds. There are various reasons for this, including insufficient funds for super contributions, insufficient long-term planning and a lack of knowledge about the benefits of contributing to super. Superannuation is a long-term investment that, in most circumstances, can only be accessed upon reaching the required retirement age, currently 65 years. This ensures that when you fully retire or reach the retirement age, you have a nest egg to draw on. You won’t have to sell your business or continue to work if you’re strapped for cash. Contributions to your super can be used to reduce your taxable income. Depending on your age you can claim up to $35,000 pre-tax contribution against your assessable income. (For exact
contributions caps, consult the Australian Tax Office (ATO)). Be careful not to claim more than the contribution caps as you may find yourself paying extra tax. There are also additional tax incentives to pay into your spouse’s super as well. You must remember that these contributions need to be paid into a complying superannuation fund, and this includes self-managed super funds (SMSF). The ATO has a series of videos to help you establish and maintain a SMSF. It is important to allow for your own super when preparing your annual budget. Ensure that your super payments do not greatly impact on the cash in your business. In effect a payment to your super takes money from the business and is recorded as drawings in your financial records. This is because your superannuation benefits you, the individual, rather than you, the small business person. Our business advisers can help you plan and budget for superannuation. We can also show you how to handle the superannuation requirements of your employees. Make an appointment, today.

Silencing rudeness KATE REID
W
hen Rodney Rude tells you his plan for retirement is to buy a donkey that he can use to get to the shops, it’s hard to know whether or not he’s joking. After 50 years in the industry – 64 if you count his radio appearance at the age of nine – one of Australia’s most loved comedians is hanging up his bawdy, politically incorrect hat to spend more time with his family. “I actually retired in 2013, but I lied,” Rodney laughed. “My Dad was 93 then and the whole idea was that I’d been doing this a long time and I wanted to look after Dad. “But then my brother – about nine months ago – said he was going to retire and he was going to look after him.” After making the decision to say goodbye to the stage Rodney decided he couldn’t leave without first saying goodbye to fans with a regional tour, including a stop off at the Evan Theatre later this month. “I just wanted to go to some of the places that I’d been as a young man, where I’d started my career,” he said. “That’s pretty much why I thought I’d do this last bunch of shows.” Rodney Rude has become a staple in
record and CD collections across the country since his first release ‘Rodney Rude Live’ in 1984. Since then he’s gone on to sell millions of records – with classic Rude titles like ‘Rats Arse’ and ‘Ya Mum’s Bum’ – while bringing countless laughs to audiences around the world. The key to Rodney’s success is the way he embraces those typical Aussie characteristics of telling a yarn and taking the piss. “I’ve totally ignored all the perimeters of political correctness and just said anything that comes into my head,” he said. “I haven’t tried to figure out whether it’s a current topic of condemnation or whatever the hell it is, I’ve just said anything I bloody like.” It’s a strategy that’s kept audiences laughing, but it’s also become a dose of humorous medicine to those who need it most. “You get young people saying ‘oh Rude, in the past three years I’ve had depression and you pulled me through and you cheered me up’,” Rodney said. “It’s just fantastic.” While he may be saying farewell to the stage, the iconic comedian has a surprise for fans who just can’t get enough. “Over the years I’ve recorded so much material, in fact at the moment I’ve got 12 different albums sitting in the studio or in the shed,” he laughed.
“I’m going to slowly start releasing them so that even when I retire people are going to be able to access some new material.”
Rodney Rude will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, October 29 at 8pm. Tickets are $67.55. For more information, visit www.rude.com.au.

Ghostbusters
Rated M // KATE REID The film also stars Aussie man of the moment Chris Hemsworth as the not-so-bright but funny secretary, Kevin. ‘Ghostbusters’ is directed by Paul Feig, who worked with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy on the 2011 comedy hit ‘Bridesmaids’. Remaking a classic is always going to be a big risk, and there’s very few films that end up better than the originals. But the reviews for ‘Ghostbusters’ have been much more positive than the initial backlash would suggest. If you missed it at the cinemas now’s your chance to check out ‘Ghostbusters’ on Blu-ray or DVD. Grab your copy in store or online today.
‘Ghostbusters’ was surely one of the most talked about film releases of 2016. The remake of the 1984 cult classic caused chaos among fans of the original, with the all-female cast being one of the main topics of discussion. Now audiences can see what all the fuss was about when the film hits the small screen this week. Heading up the cast are Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, who are joined by ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. When a thousand troublemaking ghouls take over the city of Manhattan, it’s up to this team of ghost-catchers to stop them.

Fans of the ‘Mafia’ criminal underworld franchise can now get their hands on the third release in the series. ‘Mafia III’ is set in 1968 in a fictional recreation of New Orleans known as New Bordeaux. Players will take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran and orphan who sets out to build a crime organisation in an attempt to take on the Italian Mafia. Lincoln is seeking revenge for the slaughter of the black mob, who are the only family he’s ever known. With intense gun fights, along with hand-to-hand combat and edge of your seat driving, ‘Mafia III’ is sure to please those who love their games high-energy and action-packed.
An orphanage with a difference comes to the big screen with the release of ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’. Jake (Asa Butterfield) stumbles across clues to a mystery that leads him to a strange place known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children; but that’s

only the start of the adventure. When Jake gets to know the residents, their special powers and their enemies he realises that his own ‘peculiarity’ may be the only thing that can save them. The film is based on the novel of the same name by American author Ransom Riggs. The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, Ruper Everett, Allison Janney, Chris O’Dowd and Eva Green as Miss Peregrine.
With a dark macabre story there really was no other director that could have taken on the role than Tim Burton. Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes has praised Burton for the film’s visuals, though the narrative has not been as well received. ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. LIFE & STYLE RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
This week there’s a powerful celestial punch as Mars links up with Pluto which helps you take on momentous challenges and slay scary dragons. But there’s also the potential for power struggles (especially with authority figures or work colleagues) so try to moderate your tempestuous side. Then Mercury opposes Uranus on Thursday, which shortens your already limited patience and increases your need for speed. So slow down or you might just blow a fuse!

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Venus powers through speedy Sagittarius (from tomorrow until November 12). So buying something extravagant appeals, as you spring into spontaneous spending spree mode. Just make sure you can afford any purchases you make! And avoid being too black and white about joint financial matters or sensitive intimacy issues. There are many shades of grey at the moment, as you navigate and negotiate your way through a constantly changing landscape.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Don’t underestimate the positive effect you can have on those around you. Personal projects need to be put on the backburner as you roll up your sleeves and serve others. So take a look around and see if there is someone you can help or a cause you can champion. Are you experiencing problems with a loved one? With Venus visiting your partnership zone, your motto for the moment is from Robert Louis Stevenson, “Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer.”

Be extra diplomatic when dealing with others mid-week, when Mars and Pluto pile on the pressure and hidden tensions could bubble to the surface. Power struggles and arguments are likely, especially if you try to boss loved ones around. When it comes to a work issue or a family matter, avoid being hasty on Thursday. If you are too slap-dash, then you’ll just make mistakes. Smart Crabs will come up with a carefully formulated strategy.

SAGITTARIUS
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Vivacious Venus visits your entertainment zone (from tomorrow until November 12) which gives a welcome boost to your social life. It’s also time to take a long hard look at your daily diet and exercise routine. Healthy habits established now will lead to less problems in the future, so aim to be disciplined and proactive. But be careful what you say in person and online on Thursday. An impulsive comment could lead to ongoing problems, so choose your words wisely.
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Stop endlessly complaining about the tough time you’re going through! We all know you have Saturn moving through your sign. This week things improve when Venus shifts into Sagittarius which will improve your outlook and lighten your mood. It also pumps up your fiery charisma, as you charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. But avoid the temptation to be lazy and self-indulgent. No one wants to be around a selfish Sagittarian!
VIRGO
CAPRICORN
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
There’s no substitute for hard work this week and no clever short cuts so roll up your sleeves and power through the pile of paperwork on your desk. Are you viewing a loved one through ridiculously rose-coloured glasses? Perhaps they’re not telling you the whole story? Have you asked the right questions? Honesty and clear communication are vital. But impulsive actions on Thursday could lead to mix-ups over money. So slow down and take things one logical step at a time.
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Goats can easily get stuck in a self-satisfied rut, as you keep doing things you are comfortable with. But are you challenging yourself? This week Jupiter encourages you to be more adventurous, while Mars and Pluto rev up your need to push the boundaries in ambitious new directions. But if you try to control loved ones they will resist. So strive to give others plenty of options, personal space and room to shine. Criticising less and praising more is a good place to start.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
When it comes to a frustrating family matter, you’ll have to ask some hard questions to discover what’s really going on. You won’t get far if you continue to sit on the fence. With the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter all jumping through your sign it’s time to replace procrastination with plenty of proactive passion. So your motto for the week is from birthday great, actress Sarah Bernhardt, “Life begets life. Energy creates energy. It is buy spending oneself that one becomes rich.”
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Travel, adventure, hiking, camping, rural destinations and foreign countries are all highlighted this week, as you explore the big wide world outside your door. But impulsive words or actions could lead to an argument or accident so pace yourself Aquarius. And be extra cautious when travelling, driving, cycling, jogging and walking, especially on Thursday. The weekend is a wonderful time to open your heart and be extra generous with your nearest and dearest.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
You may become obsessed with someone or something … whether the addiction is to love, sex, money, food, booze, shopping, drugs or gambling. The antidote for this orgy of excess is something that’s quite foreign to you – moderation. Yes, you can eat just one piece of chocolate cake; and love someone in a non-possessive way! But you’ll need to de-stress and relax, as you strive to connect with the wise and well-balanced Scorpio within.

I
t’s over 40 years now that Yellow Label has been at the heart of winemaking at Wolf Blass wines, delivering to buyers a range of wines from South Australia that are consistently fruit driven and full-on in flavour. And amongst its latest releases is a 2015 Chardonnay out of a vintage that started warm and dry, and was followed by much-needed rain and ultimately warm days and relatively cool nights. Then a final burst of heat in late January saw an early and condensed harvest, and as a result more of those wonderfully full-on flavour wines. The 2015 Yellow Label Chardonnay particularly benefitted from all of this, with loads of stone fruits to the fore and nicely integrated oak. And whilst made with food predominantly in mind, it can be equally enjoyed as a glass or three on its own. And as well, although best enjoyed young and fresh, some short-term cellaring will see it develop further complexity. Pay $18 and enjoy this one with what its makers suggest – creamy veal Stroganoff with mushrooms and parsley or pumpkin ravioli with sage butter sauce. One to note: If you like your reds big and hearty, one to grab is the just-released 2013 Tim Adams Shiraz (pictured). A blend of fruit off three Clare Valley vineyards, this is a gutsy drop that leads on the palate with blackberry and mulberry fruit flavours, some spiciness and hints of mint, as well as a strong reminder that it spent 24 months maturing in American oak. And surprisingly it’s just $25 to enjoy now, or to tuck away in the cellar to around the mid-2020s.

Testimonials We recently sold our first home through Troy who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Being our first time selling Troy walked us through every step in the process. Although Troy had fantastic support from his team at Jim Aitken, as an individual he always went above and beyond and kept us in the loop the whole time with his integrity and honesty. Troy is a true professional and aims to deliver a positive experience for the buyer and seller, and for us as the seller this was exactly our experience. With each step expectations were put into place and he communicated with us the whole time. If you have read this testimony this far it probably sounds like I’m blowing Troy’s trumpet, and I am. I would have no hesitation recommending Troy to any seller or buyer.

Sport Tensions rise over flares

Peachey re-signs to Panthers p.32 NATHAN TAYLOR
he Western Sydney Wanderers are once again under fire with football’s governing body after a small portion of fans ignored a pre-game “bring the passion but ditch the flares” warning during the recent historic Sydney Derby. Football Federation Australia (FFA) issued a show cause notice to the Wanderers last Monday afternoon following an incident during the Saturday night match against Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium on October 8. Following consideration of submissions received from the club, FFA determined to extend the suspended three competition point deduction hanging over the club until the end of the current A-League season. The club also advised it will not appeal FFA’s determination. The Wanderers were found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute last February, with the resultant sanctions including a fine as well as a suspended three competition point deduction. The duration of the suspended sanction was originally set down for a period of 12
T
months until February 6, 2017, but following the incident in the club’s supporter area at the Sydney Derby, in which three flares were lit, Head of A-League Greg O’Rourke said the time frame would now be extended. “Following the lighting of flares on Saturday night in a section of the Western Sydney Wanderers supporter area, the suspended sanction on the club, which was initially enforced up until February 2017, will now be in place until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 regular season,” he said. “While we will always consider a range of factors in assessing the seriousness of any anti-social behaviour, the message is simple. “If there’s a recurrence of the incident from last Saturday night involving flares identified to be let off in the Western Sydney Wanderers supporter area throughout the remainder of the regular season, FFA may well be left with no alternative other than to deduct points from the club.” O’Rourke said the FFA were continuing to investigate the incident and would continue to work with the Western Sydney Wanderers to stamp out the actions of a small minority.

Peach remains a Panther yrone Peachey says he feels something “special” is building at the Panthers after he signed a new contract extension last week. The new deal means the 25-year-old will remain with the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 NRL season. “I always wanted to stay at the Panthers because I love the club and all the people here,” Peachey said. “We’ve got such a good team and it’s exciting knowing I will be part of it for the next three years. “There’s a feeling we can do something special and whether I’m in the centres, or the forwards, I’m happy to play wherever Hook (Anthony Griffin) wants me to play.” Peachey joined the Panthers in 2014 and the following season he won the prestigious Merv Cartwright Medal, awarded to the Panthers Player of the Year, while also earning selection in the NSW City Origin side and Prime Minister’s XIII. Better known as a livewire backrower, Peachey proved his versatility in 2016 by filling in at left centre for the Panthers. “Tyrone has been wonderful for our club and I am delighted he will be with us for the next three seasons,” Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould said. Tyrone Peachey has re-signed with the Panthers
