Do you want an exciting and rewarding career? The Blue Mountains State Emergency Service is looking for new volunteers to join its ranks ERIN MAMO

ith temperatures soaring this summer, Blue Mountains State Emergency Service (SES) is looking for new recruits to keep up with the demand. The Blue Mountains Unit of the SES, which is based in Faulconbridge, has been kept busy recently, responding to a range of call outs from lost bushwalker searches to storms and bushfires. Local Controller, John Hughes, said the unit is looking for volunteers to be trained up as response field members in the lower Blue Mountains. “We train our members in storm damage, flood operations and even progress into flood rescue and floodboat operations,” Mr Hughes said. “We also provide extensive training in

map navigation as well as search techniques to assist the police in land search operations.” The SES is a registered training organisation which provides nationally recognised training in all aspects of emergency management as well as subjects such as first aid, chainsaw operations, and flood and vertical rescue techniques. There are no costs to the volunteer as all safety equipment and uniforms are provided to all members. Many of the volunteers who have passed through the Blue Mountains SES over the years have been able to use their skills to develop their working career. Blue Mountains SES is holding an information night later this month It will be held on Tuesday, February 21 from 7.30pm at 7 Sir Henrys Parade, Faulconbridge.

Resident claims Hazelbrook is being forgotten about by Council ERIN MAMO

he community of Hazelbrook is continuing to plead for upgrades to the car park at their local shopping centre as Blue Mountains City Council prepares their 2017/18 Budget. The Hazelbrook Association has been communicating with Council since 2009 to try and get safety improvements made to the shopping centre car park that sits along the highway. Now that Council is preparing their Budget for the next financial year, local resident, Ken Goodlet said he hopes the car park improvements will be at the forefront for Ward 2. “The car park is dangerous,” Mr Goodlet declared. “According to shop keepers there are accidents there almost daily.” Councillor Romola Hollywood said she

is doing her best to get funding so that the safety improvements can be implemented. Last year she called for any financial resources that Council have from the

2016/17 financial year from Ward 2 projects to go towards fixing the car park. “I know something needs to be done to improve the safety and amenities of the car park and I am working hard to address the issue which I believe is a priority,” Cr Hollywood said. In 2014, Council developed an unfunded Masterplan that proposed improvements to the car park like widening the footpath on the eastern side, installing bollards to

separate vehicle and pedestrian zones, and separating entry and exit points. To date none of these improvements have been made because Council is yet to acquire funding. Mr Goodlet says he understands that funding is not available to complete major works but would like to see something done to minimise danger. “If the changes to the entry and exit points could at least be made, that would be a start,” he said. Council have already changed the time limit on parking in the area in an attempt to improve the current situation. Mr Goodlet said he feels like Hazelbrook has been forgotten about. “The Council and Roads and Maritime Services spent all their money on the upgrade to Lawson shops,” he said. “They did a lovely job but it seems like they used all their money and don’t have any left for Hazelbrook.” In the long-term, Mr Goodlet said he would like Council to consider his own plan for the space at Hazelbrook, which includes a two storey car park on the northern side of the already existing car park.

Helen Walker “made lives better” Blue Mountains City Council presents dedicated local Helen Walker Citizen of the Year award ERIN MAMO

n Australia Day, Blue Mountains City Council presented their Citizen of the Year award to Helen Walker for her service in providing community transport to the Blue Mountains. 30 years ago, Ms Walker started out as the first and only employee of a community transport program, which has now become the largest of its kind – transporting the aged and disabled in both the Blue Mountains and Penrith. “When I first took on the role of Blue Mountains Community Transport Coordinator I knew nothing about the industry,” Ms Walker said. “On my first day, I started with a desk, a phone, a shared set of drawers and a generic manual. “30 years later and my how things have changed!” Over the years Ms Walker has grown the community transport project, which is now known as Great Community Transport Inc, from just herself to two offices full of employees (one in the Blue Mountains and one in Penrith), 26 vehicles, a team of paid drivers and over 100 volunteers.

In November last year, Ms Walker decided it was time to take a well deserved break and retired. A spokesperson for Blue Mountains City Council said Ms Walker has been a forerunner in the industry and has led the way with lots of leading initiatives. “Ms Walker is being awarded Citizen of the Year so that we can recognise her dedication and commitment to making people’s lives better,” the spokesperson said. “Ms Walker has achieved a lot in the 30 years she was with Great Community Transport, including being the first to introduce a computer system and later a smarter scheduling program that has now been purchased and implemented by Transport for NSW. “As she begins her new chapter of retirement, it is fitting that her contribution to the Blue Mountains community is acknowledged in the highest regard.” In 2014 and 2015, Great Community Transport provided transport to 3291 individuals, with a total of 78,080 trips. Ms Walker has also been the recipient of an Order of Australia Medal, the Bi-Centenary Medal and the Western Sydney University Woman of the West Award during her long career.

Hazelbrook local lost for words upon receiving Aus Day honour ERIN MAMO

osemary Harris of Hazelbrook believes her commitment and willingness to help the community was encouraged by her challenging upbringing after her farther died in World War II. As one of five children, Ms Harris said her and her siblings grew up always knowing about community services that were available to help her family. “My mother wasn’t one to ask for help or receive it, but she always knew services were there if she needed it,” Ms Harris said. “For me, getting involved in the community years later was a nice way to meet people who were going through a similar thing to what I went through as a child.” The 82-year-old will now receive a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to the Oberon community that include holding the position of President at Oberon United Hospital for over 12 years, opening a Shepherd Centre for the Hearing Impaired in Bathurst, and for her services to Legacy Australia. Ms Harris said it is a funny feeling to be given awards for the work she has done. “I don’t really know how I feel,” she said. “I’m happy to receive the awards and I

Respected local surgeon remembered for tireless work ERIN MAMO

f the four Blue Mountains residents that are being honoured for their services and contributions, Dr Patrick Charles Cregan’s story comes with a bittersweet ending. As a surgeon who practiced at Nepean Hospital since 1983, Mr Cregan retired last year due to an ongoing battle of his own with cancer. A father of seven, Dr Cregan passed away in palliative care in Springwood last week, just short of Australia Day last Thursday. Throughout his career Dr Cregan assisted in the establishment of Nepean Hospital as a University Teaching Hospital, and assisted in the establishment of Nepean Hospital’s Cancer Care Centre. He sat in the role of the Chairman for Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District from 2011 to 2015 and was the Clinical Director of Surgery for the Sydney West Area Health Service from 2001 to 2011. Other roles he took on included Board Member of General Surgeons of Australia, Scientific Convenor of Annual Scientific Meetings, Board Member for NSW Cancer Institute, and Member of the New South Wales Committee for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Dr Cregan was honoured with an AM for significant service to medicine and health care delivery in NSW, and to clinical advisory and governance roles.

alerie George is being honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to women’s health and to the community particularly for her work in producing a mastectomy cushion which is now widely distributed in Australia. Ms George, who will be 79 in March, actively works with Zonta International who are a global organisation of professionals that provide services and advocacy to help improve the lives of women. In Australia, Ms George coordinated the Breast Care Project that has produced and distributed a large number of mastectomy cushions for women who have had to have their breast partially or fully removed. The Lapstone local said many women in Australia who have received the cushions have been really grateful for them. “The cushions, which are shaped like a half moon go under your arm and over your shoulder to help lift the arm after surgery,” Ms Harris said. Outside of the Breast Care Project Ms George has done a lot of significant work with domestic violence support groups in the Penrith area including setting up a half way house and was also a driver

lthough he retired last year, John Rankins is a busy man. At 76 he still teaches casually at TAFE, is a member on the board of Katoomba Villages Association, a member of the Blue Mountains Food and Wine Advisory Group and a member of the Upper Blue Mountains Rotary Club. Now Mr Rankins is being recognsied for the significant service he has given to the community of the Blue Mountains through an OAM. As a trained chef, Mr Rankins moved to the Blue Mountains in 1971 and bought the Brown Horse Inn which is now Wentworth Falls Pots on the highway. “Before I moved to the Mountains I’d been working as a chef at Government House and a few restaurants in Sydney,” Mr Rankins said. In 1979 the culinary expert joined the Central Blue Mountains Rotary Club where he was a member up until 2002 when he made a small switch to the Upper Blue Mountains Rotary Club that he is still a part of today. Mr Rankins believes that Rotary Clubs are important in communities like the Blue Mountains because it brings people together. “Rotary Clubs help out local youth centres, they do a lot for cancer research and are always fundraising for a good cause,” he said. Outside of volunteering Mr Rankin worked for TAFE as a hospitality teacher for over 20 years.

2016 Leura murder case gets re-mentioned in Penrith Court ALENA HIGGINS

he man accused of murdering a 34-year-old man at Leura late last year has had his matter re-mentioned in court. Henry Walcott chose not appear by video link before Penrith Local Court on Friday, January 20, with his lawyer indicating he could deal with the matter in the accused’s absence. Police will allege the 28-year-old, of Petersham, used a knife to inflict fatal

wounds to Cameron Bradley’s neck and chest on November 10, with police later discovering the body at a house on Kings Road. During the mention, the Director of Public Prosecutions requested extended brief orders, with the balance of the brief of evidence now expected to be served in March. Walcott, who is currently remanded in custody at Long Bay jail, did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused. His matter was re-listed for reply on March 17.

80-year-old man crushed between car and fence

On Sunday, January 22, an 80-year-old male from Burns Road, Springwood, was located by friends pinned between his vehicle and a hardwood property dividing fence. It is believed the vehicle rolled and dragged the man a short distance before he became pinned to the fence. The male was treated by ambulance at the scene but was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries. Police are not treating the death as suspicious. Violent man rips door off hinges in Hazelbrook

Senior Ministers dumped NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced her new-look Cabinet, removing five senior Ministers including Education Minister Adrian Piccoli and Roads Minister Duncan Gay. New Ministers elevated to Cabinet were sworn in yesterday. Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has retained his position as Minister for Sport, while his Mulgoa colleague Tanya Davies has been elevated to Cabinet. Mr Ayres is no longer the Minister for Tourism and Major Events but picks up Western Sydney and WestConnex.

Ms Davies picks up three key roles and is now the Minister for Women, Minister for Mental Health and Minister for Ageing. Adrian Piccoli, Jillian Skinner, Duncan Gay, John Ajaka and Leslie Williams are no longer in Cabinet. Brad Hazzard picks up the vital Health portfolio while Rob Stokes takes on Education. On Saturday, January 21, Police were called to an address on Talbot Road, Hazelbrook, after a domestic violence incident where a 35-year-old man had repeatedly hit the front door with such force that the door ripped from its hinges. The man then fled the scene and was located shortly after drinking at Hazelbrook Bowling Club. The man was arrested and taken to Katoomba Police Station. The male was charged with ‘intimidation’ and ‘destroy/damage property’, and was granted conditional bail to appear before Katoomba Local Court on Monday, February 20. Anyone with information is urged to contact Police.

Teens beat man unconscious

About 2am on Saturday, January 21, three male teenagers from throughout the Blue Mountains were charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, ‘common assault’ and ‘affray’ after they assaulted a man at the Katoomba Hotel. The male victim was kicked and punched to the head causing him to become unconscious and sustained an injury to his right hand. The three males were granted conditional bail and are due to appear before Katoomba Local Court on Monday, February 6.

Drunk driver crashes car

In the early hours of Sunday, January 22, a 25-year-old male from Mulgoa was travelling in a westerly direction down Mount Victoria Pass, towards Lithgow and lost control of his vehicle. The driver collided with the Armco railing on the western side of the road and then slid onto the other side of the road coming to rest against the Armco railing in the east bound lanes. Police attended the scene and the driver underwent a breath test which returned a positive result. A small amount of cannabis was also located in the vehicle which the driver admitted to being his. The driver was then taken to Katoomba Police Station where he returned a breath analysis reading of 0.136. The driver was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug’, ‘drive with middle range PCA’ and ‘negligent driving’.

A great place for men to get together New Men’s Shed in Mt Riverview is calling on local men of all ages to sign up and get involved ERIN MAMO

here’s a new Men’s Shed in town and organisers are calling on the community to get involved. Recently the Mt Riverview Men’s Shed on Calver Avenue opened its doors on a trial basis in the hopes of bringing men, mostly retirees, together to socialise and talk about important issues. Men’s Sheds exist all over the country with a purpose of providing a place outside of the home where men can get together. According to the Australian Men’s Shed Association there are currently an estimated 985 sheds throughout the country with a total of 150,000 members. Committee Member, Cameron Phillips, said the trial opening of the shed at Mt Riverview was a success. “We had a good turn out for our first day,” Mr Phillips said. “We have over 25 males who have expressed their interest and given us their details.” Mr Phillips, who has a background in nursing, said Men’s Sheds are also a great place for men to talk about health issues. “A lot of men don’t like to talk about these kinds of things,” he said. “But if we can bring a group of them

“If the people who come along are interested in fishing, then we will talk about fishing, if the people who come along all like to play cards then we will play cards,” Mr Phillips said. The Mt Riverview Men’s Shed will now

be open each Tuesday from 9am-1pm and the committee are hoping to see new faces each week. There are no age requirements and individuals can choose to become a member of the Shed after attending two meetings.

When you buy shares on or after this date, you will not be entitled to any dividends. Shares purchased before this will receive the dividend. • The Record Date: The date when a company looks at their records to see who is eligible to receive the dividend. To receive a dividend you MUST be on the record. i.e. do not sell your shares before this date! • The Payment Date: This is the date when dividends are actually paid to shareholders.

f you are a regular user of social media, you have likely been bombarded over the past week with news articles, opinion pieces and social commentary relating to the recent inauguration of America’s new president. I have seen a great deal of discussion asking how this person was able to win over enough people to succeed, despite an apparent exhaustive list of negative attributes and lack of political experience. It seems to me that he was successful because he found a simple message, and repeated that message loudly every chance he got. It was a message that was hard to refute and that appealed to those more inclined to vote on a feeling than on a policy. He tapped into the frustrations of a large group of people and gave them the words they wanted to hear. Politics aside, it raises a really good question for those of us in business. I’m sure we can all think of a really annoying television advertisement that sticks in our head. It might be a catchy jingle, or a grating voiceover or an over-the-top

tagline. But despite, or in fact, because of its annoying qualities, we remember that product or service. There is another way of ‘being’ in business though. I guess you could call it the ‘quiet achiever’ path. This is the business who provides a quality product or service and knows that word of mouth sales are going to be their biggest form of advertising. Customers love what they receive and become loyal customers. They are ‘sold’ by the quality of the product, not by hearing a slogan screamed at them, that quite possibly ‘over promises’ and ‘under delivers’. For many of us, integrity, value for money, commitment to quality and great customer service is what drives us, rather than the need to create a multi-million dollar empire. ‘Bigger’ is not necessarily ‘better’, and those of you who prefer to frequent small, local businesses can attest to that! So this is a ‘take heart’ article: if you often feel like you get drowned out by the ‘noise’ of bigger, brasher companies, don’t be afraid to keep plugging away at what you love and know to be true.

acebook is currently rolling out another new feature which business owners should be welcoming with open arms. The Facebook ‘Shop’ feature enables business and personal pages to sell products directly from your Facebook page for free. Once you add your shop section to your page, your customers can message you directly to find out more about your products, or you can send them directly to an external website to complete their purchase. You can list as many products as you like, feature and showcase specific products, communicate with your customers directly through the page, and get insights, so you can see how many views and/or messages you’ve received for each product. To add a shop section to your page, all you have to do is click the shop tab and follow the prompts. If you can’t see the shop section, visit settings, edit page and add the shop tab. You can then select whether you want your customer to message to buy, or ‘check out’ on another website. Select

your currency and continue to follow the prompts to finalise your setup. Once complete, you can start adding products. People will only see your shop after you have added at least one product and your product has been reviewed and approved. Once you’ve uploaded a new product, share it on your page timeline to make your customers more aware of it. It’s the only way to make your products eligible to show up in your customers’ News Feeds without them visiting your Shop page directly. Make sure to add catchy content to encourage people to view the products available and make them want to complete their purchase. At this time, you can’t sell things like services or digital goods through your shop section; you can only sell physical products. You can also boost individual products to incorporate Facebook product purchases into your marketing strategy. This will not only increase your sales potential, but also drive customers to your Facebook page, which in turn will increase your organic reach and overall social media interaction.

he Joan will come alive with the sound of opera when two of Australia’s opera greats take to the stage. Amelia Farrugia and David Hobson will perform highlights from the great works in opera and operetta, along with musical theatre hits in their show ‘Love Unspoken’. The talented pair are no strangers to performing together, having worked on many projects including the recent ‘Opera in the Vineyards’ in the Hunter Valley and Opera Australia’s ‘Candide’. Hobson, a well known tenor and composer, has nothing but praise for his fellow star. “The thing about Amelia is she has a fantastically natural soprano voice but she’s a great stage performer as well,” he said. “It’s a great combination because sometimes you get a singer who’s a great singer but not so good as an actress, or you get an actress with an OK voice, but Amelia’s got the whole package. “I’m lucky to be working with her and the audience will be lucky to hear her.” The performance will feature music from some of the pair’s favourite roles including duets from ‘The Merry Widow’,

‘La Boheme’, ‘Candide’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and more. Though the local opera scene may be small compared to its international counterparts, for David there’s a special connection that comes with working in the genre. “There’s a real camaraderie between opera performers because it is a relatively close, tight knit scene and everyone knows everyone else,” he said. “The opportunities to perform opera are not as great as they used to be, but it’s still a very healthy scene and there is a great kind of empathy between performers.” For those that are yet to explore this classic genre David has one thing to say – to love music is to love opera. “If you like music then you’re going to find something in opera that you like,” he said. “It’s a living, breathing art form, there’s a reason why we keep doing some operas that are nearly three or four hundred years old, it’s because they’re really good. “Some of the greatest works of art that have ever been written are in opera.” ‘Love Unspoken’ with Amelia Farrugia and David Hobson will be on at The Joan on Saturday, February 18 at 7.30pm. How to add some excitement to your standard salads Sick of salads? Maybe you’re just not being creative with them. We’ve got some tips to add some real appeal to your salads this summer...

If there’s one meal that has a serious image problem it’s salad. Salads are the food equivalent of Mondays, and if you’re sitting down to a bowl of lettuce, tomato and cucumber every day I can see why. That being said, with a little imagination, and your favourite ingredients, you can create a nutritious salad that won’t taste like rainy days and sadness. Step 1 – The Greens Green leafy vegetables are one of the healthiest foods you can add to your diet. Depending on your preference try rocket, baby spinach, kale, broccoli or cabbage. If you’re not a huge fan of greens, opt for something more neutral like iceberg or cos lettuce, or use more vegetables and less greens. Step 2 – The Veggies When it comes to the vegetable component there’s really no limit to the combinations you can create. Tomato, red onion, pumpkin, roast potato, asparagus, mushrooms, red cabbage – the list is endless.

mate who has long been lauded by family and friends for his annual New Year’s Eve “Seafood and Chardonnay” bashes, found himself doubly-applauded this year when he offered up not just his usual Chardonnay, but a bubbly Pucino Prosecco from the Dal Zotto family winery in Victoria’s King Valley, as well. Pioneers of the variety in Australia, the Dal Zottos planted our first Prosecco in 1999 in homage to patriarch Otto who hailed from Valdobbiadene, in the heartland of Italy’s Prosecco country around Veneto. And they’ve not looked back since, sales growing nicely year upon year as Aussies learn about and embrace the varietal. Son and Chief Winemaker, Michael Dal Zotto crafted his skills by going to Italy to learn from Prosecco makers in Veneto, while other son Christian headed-up Sales and Marketing, and Otto himself although now retired still regularly frequents the winery. The current-release Dal Zotto NV Pucino Prosecco has classic varietal flavours of crisp apples and pears, and hints of a citrusy zest; pay $20 and enjoy on its own, or with seafoods or party finger-foods. One to note: It’s almost a half-century since Wynns first put together a blend of Coonawarra Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot, dubbing it at the time Cabernet Hermitage. And today, 48 years after that first blend was released, it’s still as popular as ever. A lovely versatile red that’s no longer known by the Cabernet Hermitage handle, but simply labelled with its three grape varietals.

Sever’s disease, also called calcaneal apophysitis, is the most common cause of heel pain in kids, in particular those who are physically active. The heel pain experienced is caused when the growth plate of the heel becomes injured and inflamed. This may be caused by one or multiple factors. Tight calf muscles The growth plate in the heel is a cartilaginous growth centre onto which the calf muscles insert, via the Achilles tendon. If the calf muscles are tight they cause repetitive and continuous traction on the growth plate, resulting in injury. Recent growth spurt The most common time for kids to develop Sever’s disease is between eight and 14 years of age. This is because the growth plate has not yet completed its development and fused with the heel bone. During periods of rapid growth and development, the bones in the legs can

also grow in length and it can take some time for the length of the muscles to adjust, leaving kids prone to traction injuries. Biomechanical abnormalities Excessively rolled in/pronated or high arched feet are at increased risk of injury. Repetitive stress Repetitive force from running, jumping, hard flooring/sporting surface or excessive training hours can all make the growth plate more vulnerable to injury. Incorrect footwear It is always important to wear sport specific footwear that is supportive and tailored to your child’s foot type. A good quality supportive shoe can

assist in reducing biomechanical abnormalities and help prevent excessive strain on anatomical structures. Sever’s disease can affect a child’s growth and development and cause significant pain. It is therefore essential to get a correct diagnosis and treatment to address any underlying causative factors. Eyebrows: Always an important feature on the face as they frame your eyes and add structure, but last year’s brows are done and over with! Painted on and pointy looking, these heavily made up brows have got to go. This year trending is a fuller, softer brow, these are easy to pull off because they can be slightly over grown and ultra natural looking. Another plus to sporting fuller brows is that you look a lot younger! Pointy stiletto nails: This trending nail shape had us all a little confused when it first started appearing, but soon enough these claw-looking talons became the go-to nail shape being spotted all over Instagram with fans like Khloe Kardashian and Lady Gaga rocking them. Dangerous when you accidentally scratch your face and not very practical when you try to open that can of drink, 2017 is all about more rounded nails that flow

naturally with the shape of your cuticles. Too much contouring and highlight: When Kim Kardashian first shared her tip stolen from the drag world of makeup with thick dark lines drawn all over her face, all of us felt a little inspired to try out the beauty secret! What most of us didn’t know is that this heavier makeup style generally only really works for television and in photos, not really translating into

everyday life. Try being more subtle. A contoured cheekbone and a touch of highlighter on the tops of the cheeks keeps you looking polished. Skip that excessive and time consuming extra step of nose contouring and sleep in a little longer! Bring on 2017! I’m excited to see what the year blesses us with in beauty!
