Council says no to housing plan Mayor to push for Blue Mountains to be excluded from policy change ERIN MAMO

ouncil will fight to prevent lowrise medium density housing like townhouses from being built in the Blue Mountains. Recently, Council confirmed that they will make a submission to the Department of Planning and Environment, rejecting proposed changes to the State Environmental Planning Policy 2008 that would allow low-rise medium density housing to be included in complying development types. Last year, the Government department released a draft Medium Density Design Guide that looked at changing policy so it would be easier to gain approval to build low-rise medium density housing like townhouses and terraces, dual occupancies (two houses on one block) and small residential buildings that contain three to four homes. Currently, the draft guide and an explanation of intended effects are on display and the public are able to make submissions regarding its content. Blue Mountains City Council and Mayor Mark Greenhill, believes the Blue Mountains area is different to the rest of Sydney and should be discluded from the policy changes.

C

Council wants to protect its built and natural heritage “The Blue Mountains is a world heritage area,” Cr Greenhill said. “Tourists come here to enjoy both our built and natural heritage. “Therefore we will be raising the issue that a one size fits all statewide code for medium density housing, is not suitable for the Blue Mountains.” A spokesperson from the Department of Planning and Environment said that low-rise medium density housing types have many advantages.

“These housing types are generally more affordable and more sustainable,” the Spokesperson said. Cr Greenhill strongly opposed the idea that this type of housing is more affordable. “It is a myth that this type of housing becomes cheaper,” Cr Greenhill said. Man fined after gun discovery A Hazelbrook man has been handed a 12-month suspended sentence and fined $3,000 after pleading guilty to a raft of firearms offences. Vincent Neil Doherty, 62, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday after his ex-partner tipped off police to the presence of unauthorised firearms at his Valley Road home. It is understood about 25 officers swooped on Mr Doherty as he drove down his street about 11am on November 3. Mr Doherty, a self-confessed hoarder, assisted police to locate three unsecured weapons, including two rusted rifles and a Browning 1911 9mm pistol. The court heard the pensioner had held a licence for the rifles that expired in 1999. They were found stored in the lining of a couch, while the pistol was uncovered, along with two magazines of ammunition, a silencer and cannabis, in a suitcase under his bed. Mr Doherty admitted he had been in possession of the firearms and drugs for more than 30 years and contended he discovered the pistol and ammunition at a dump. – Alena Higgins

Rotary Club urges kids to take a lap around Penrith Lakes ERIN MAMO

alling all school kids, Kinder through to Year 12! Do you want to join forces with other local kids to help make a difference in less fortunate countries? This year the Lower Blue Mountains Rotary Club’s ‘Ride for Kidz’ challenge is on again, which sees both primary and high school students take part in a bike ride or walk around the Penrith Lakes at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. On Wednesday, December 14, sponsored students will participate in the five kilometre lap that came about after School Teacher and Rotary Member, Michael Harriden, visited Cambodia in 2008. “My son and I went to Cambodia on holidays and saw the conditions the locals were living in,” Mr Harriden said. “They asked us if we could help, so we did.” In 2009, Mr Harriden and his son Greg started the first ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ and raised $8,000, which enabled them to build Samraong Public School in Cambodia. Seven years on and the not-for-profit is thriving, having raised over $150,000. With the help of the community they have been able to build a second school in Cambodia and the Mando School in Papua New Guinea.

C

Harriden with Ride for Kidz recipients Now, ‘Ride 4 Kidz’ wants to help Mt Sion, a school for blind children in Goroka, Papua New Guinea that desperately needs new classrooms, computers and other educational resources. “These events give our kids the opportunity to understand the educational needs of fellow students in nearby developing countries,” Mr Harriden said. “Through this project students are enhancing the sense of worth of the less fortunate children.” ‘Ride for Kidz’ will be held from 10am to 2pm and is $40 to register. A barbecue lunch will be provided as well as raffles. To register, email mharriden01@gmail. com or phone Michael on 0419 285 394.

Peeping tom caught redhanded in Hazelbrook

At about 11pm on Wednesday, November 23 a peeping tom was caught red handed by his victim while trying to gain footage of her in the shower. After turning the water off, the 18-year-old victim heard her dogs barking and a loud thud. She then saw a hand holding a black coloured smart phone emerge through the fly screen of her bathroom window. The victim yelled out and after a short time the hand holding the phone moved back through the fly screen and then disappeared. The victim immediately contacted police who attended the scene but was unable to locate the suspect. A number of the victim’s underwear was found to be removed from the clothesline during the incident. The person at the window has been described as a Caucasian male in his early twenties, with a stocky build and short dark hair.

Fire sparked by lightening strike threatens homes

A bushfire on Mt Blackheath Road, Blackheath threatened several homes on Wednesday, November 23. Mt Blackheath Road was closed by police at the intersection of Hargreaves Road for a number of hours as police door knocked residents. With temperatures reaching approximately 26 degrees and winds of 20-25

kilometres per hour, the fire moved close to residential properties, threatening roughly seven houses. There were no injuries to any volunteer or emergency personnel and no damage to property other than grasslands. Fire investigators attended the scene the following day and determined that the fire was started as a result of a lightning strike.

Motorbike rider dies after crashing into tree

About 9.15am on Sunday, November 27, a 50-year-old male was riding a Suzuki motorbike with a group of friends along Bells Line of Road, towards Lithgow. It is understood that as he negotiated a bend at the intersection of the Darling Causeway and Chifley Road, he has taken the bend too wide and ridden over the painted median strip through gravel. On exiting the corner the man has then hit a plastic guide post and slammed into a tree. A number of riders stopped to help the man, including administering CPR. Emergency Services were contacted and responded, continuing resuscitation on the male at the scene until 10am when unfortunately the man was pronounced dead. Springwood Police said this is a particularly sad incident, with the rider leaving behind a wife and child.

Tourism Awards

Locals dominate at NSW Tourism Awards ERIN MAMO

lue Mountains businesses took home the gold, silver and bronze at this year’s NSW Tourism Awards. Three local tourism businesses – Ask Roz, The Fairmont Resort Leura and Mountain Whispers Luxury Escapes – were all nominated as finalists in the awards and all took home a place. Held on Thursday, November 24, 28 winners were announced from a range of categories, including Major Tourist Attractions, Festivals and Events, Destination Marketing and Accommodation. Ask Roz won gold at the event in the Specialised Tourism Services category and Owner, Graham Reibelt, said he and his wife were honoured to walk away with the top gong. “It’s amazing to win at a state level, it’s a whole new level for us, we were shocked,” he said. The Lawson-based couple developed Ask Roz, a phone app, in 2013 when they became frustrated that they couldn’t find out about things that were on in the area quickly and easily. “We would find that you would have to collect dozens of tourism brochures and then spend hours going through them to

B

find something that appealed to you,” Mr Reibelt said. “We thought there had to be an easier way you could find out about what’s on through your mobile phone.” Ask Roz will now go on to compete as a finalist at the Australian Tourism Awards, which will be held in February 2017 in Darwin. Mr and Mrs Reibelt are currently working on an updated version of their app, which will include brand new features like a ‘take me home’ button. The Fairmont Resort based in Leura also won big at the 2016 NSW Tourism Awards, taking home two silvers in the Deluxe Accommodation and Business Event Venues categories. Mountain Whispers Luxury Escapes rounded off the local trio’s wins with a bronze in the Luxury Accommodation category. Five winners at the awards were also inducted into the NSW Tourism Awards’ Hall of Fame for winning their category three years in a row. These included Château Élan at The Vintage in the Hunter Valley and AAT Kings New South Wales. For a full list of the winners visit http:// www.nswtourismawards.com/2016Winners.

This girl also knows how to “shake and “sit nicely for treats. She got on well with other dogs and enjoyed playing ball! She came in with her buddy PCC 658 and it would be great to see them adopted together.

This guy loved to pose for the camera! He was friendly with other dogs next to him and has a very friendly nature. He will need some TLC as he came in with glue in his coat.

Such a gorgeous looking girl with the personality to match! She was doing zoomies in her kennel and on her way past the water bowl would stick her face in and splash water everywhere! She loved cuddles and would sit really nicely for a treat.

Such a handsome little guy! He loved to splash in the clam shell pool and also play ball! He also enjoyed play with the other dogs next to him!

This is one big boy! When I first met him he was hiding, but once I came over he was out for a cuddle.

Congregation salvages sing-a-long The annual Blaxland Christmas Carols have been saved, with church members coming to the rescue ERIN MAMO

he Blaxland Christmas Carols will go ahead this year despite the Uniting Church recently cancelling the 47-year-old tradition. The church made the call to cancel their annual carols because the band that usually performs became unavailable due to another commitment. Members of the congregation, including Mal Castledine, then rallied together, adamant that the event that locals have come to know and love would not be canned. “We couldn’t let the carols be cancelled,” Mr Castledine said. “We decided that we would use our own congregation’s singers and pianist and put on the event ourselves.” At 75, Mr Castledine is still an active member of a Barber Shop Quartet called ‘Silver Fox’ with three other locals. The group have been singing together since 1999 and are well known in the Mountains having sung at Glenbrook Australia Day celebrations, the Leura Gardens Festival and every year at the Anzac Day commemorations in Lawson. They’ve also frequented many nursing

homes, Glenbrook and Penrith Panthers, Katoomba Hospital and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. The Fox’s, who rehearse once a week, are now practicing their line up for the festive sing-a-long, which will include favourites such as ‘Oh Holy Night’ and ‘Angels We’ve Heard on High’. A capella singers known as the ‘Penrith City Harmony’ have also agreed to perform on the day. Mr Castledine said the congregation is still looking for more performers, including children, opera singers and bathroom baritones who might like to come along and perform. The carols is a free event and Mr Castledine just asks that everyone brings their singing voices. He said while the carols will be housed inside the church, there will still be plenty of cheer. “Although the carols will be held inside the church itself this year we don’t want to preach to people, we are the Uniting Church and we just want to unite the community,” he said. The Uniting Church Christmas Carols will held at 3pm on December 18 at 70 Old Bathurst Road, Blaxland. Free afternoon tea will be provided.

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree Pining for a real Christmas tree? Winmalee Lions Club are selling them for $40 a pop in fundraising drive ERIN MAMO

Tis the season to be jolly’ and that’s just what the Lions Club at Winmalee want for the local community. For the last 30 years the club has been selling real Christmas trees to residents to raise much needed money for local projects. This year will be no different, with 86 pine trees set to arrive in Winmalee straight off a truck from an Oberon farm this weekend at around 6.30am on Saturday, December 10. Lions Club Member, John Jennings, said there is nothing quite like coming home to the lovely fragrance of a real Christmas tree. “Childhood memories come flooding back to me of family and friends joining together to celebrate the festive season,” he said. This year the funds raised from the sale will go directly towards children in the local area who are in need of greater support, like a visually impaired support group. Funds will also go towards in-house charities that the club annually donates to, including Lions NSW Save Sight

Fundraising Drive

Winmalee Lions Club members with last year’s Christmas trees Foundation, The Lions Club International Foundation and The Australian Lions Club Foundation. The Lions Club of Winmalee was established and chartered in 1986. Since then, they have supported both the local community and those at a distance, such as the 2013 Bushfires, Cyclone Tracy, Black Saturday Bushfires and the Queensland Floods, raising money and collecting much needed supplies for each disaster.

They also coordinate many other fundraising events each year like the weekly chocolate wheel that is taken around to various events in the community. Mr Jennings said the club is always willing to help and support those in need in the local Mountains community. “We generally take the approach that, where we can, we will help people run their project with our experience and resources at their disposal,” he said.

“It’s an ongoing tradition for us to help the local community to achieve their dream and goals.” The Christmas tree sale will run from 7am to 12pm on Saturday, December 10, on the corner of Hawkesbury Road and Lee Road, Winmalee. Each Christmas tree will be $40 on the day and the Lions Club are advising buyers to get in early as they usually sell out quickly.

business and have been for over a hundred years? How on earth could consumers ever be expected to take ultimate responsibility when they are provided with shoddy goods or services from such a company? But wait; what if that company also operated in an industry where the major participants all acted exactly the same? What chance would we have of fair treatment? ASIC recently released ‘Report 499 Financial advice: Fees for no service’ and it certainly details exactly what little chance consumers have when a whole industry treads a path of dishonesty. Quite simply, all our major banks along with AMP have been continuously charging their financial planning clients fees for services that were never supplied. The length and breadth of this transgression represents, in my opinion, some of the most deceitful and dishonest bastardry ever perpetrated by a bank on their clients. The banks only stopped the practice once new laws requiring continuous client consent for ongoing fees were introduced. If ever you wanted proof that something was broken with our banks, read this report. It will certainly open your eyes about a once noble profession.

Although we live in an age with some very robust consumer laws, there are still companies, no matter their size, who will stretch the limits of acceptable consumer behaviour. You only need to visit Choice’s site to see examples of this. ‘Caveat emptor’, Latin for ‘buyers beware’, is probably the phrase most oft quoted whenever a case of corporate skulduggery is revealed. The phrase succinctly encapsulates the notion that ultimate responsibility always resides with the consumer, rather than the merchant. And yes,

Tips to avoid failure in your new business venture

used to think that the key ingredient to having a successful business was having a great idea. After starting my business nearly 12 years ago, I continued to come up with new ‘side’ ventures, thinking that I just had to find the ‘next best thing’. Some of these ‘brainwaves’ had some small successes. But about three years ago, I came to the realisation that I was already doing what I do best – I just needed to find better ways to do it, to suit my goals and aspirations. At the time, it wasn’t a particularly positive thought process! I felt a bit deflated and regretted the time, energy and resources I had put into those ‘big ideas’. It felt like I was admitting defeat and that I was now playing it safe. But about six months after this realisation and decision, I began to see a big difference in my bank account. Without even ‘trying’, the fact that I was now single-minded in my focus increased my profit. It was quite startling! I was able to see that giving my full attention to my core business increased my productivity and ability to see opportunities when

they came along, instead of trying to ‘create’ them. I also realised how many valuable lessons I had learnt through these ventures: I was more confident in my abilities; I had expanded my network and contacts in the local community; I had less fear of stepping out and trying something different; and, I understood better that ‘ideas people’ don’t necessarily make for good leaders in business. Through this process, I also learnt to say no more often to the energy-sapping requests, and am now able to better seek out the more positive opportunities. Combined with this was learning to ignore the sceptics – those people are usually the ones who don’t have the fortitude to do what you are doing, so ignore them! Above all, after nearly 12 years in business, I can safely say that a key to being a successful entrepreneur or business owner is resilience. Even if the goal posts change, even if things are really tough, the ability to bounce back and push on is vital.

O

to your costs for living – e.g. groceries, clothing and health. If your business is capable of covering the total then it is financially feasible. But is there a market out there? Look at your product/service and determine who is likely to use it. Then talk to those people, interview them or offer a survey to complete. In that survey, or in that conversation, ask them how much they would pay for the product/service, offer at least three prices or price ranges. If they don’t wish to buy ask them why. A good pilot study is normally 20–50 people. The larger your target market, the more people you need to talk to. Analyse those responses to gain information about what price range to charge, features to include in the product/ service, and a profile of the market, so that you can enhance the appeal of your product and minimise the outgoing costs. Do this, and you have a better chance at avoiding business failure in the first three years of operation. For more information on this, give the Western Sydney Business Centre a call.

n a recent broadcast of ‘Q and A’ on the ABC, Melbourne journalist, Grace Collier, suggested that one way to find a job was to start a business. And at the Western Sydney Business Centre we see a lot of individuals who want to do just that. They come to us with an idea and we help them assess the merit of that idea. But even before then, you need to realise that running a small business is not a guaranteed cure to finding a job. The statistics related to start-up businesses are not encouraging. A report issued earlier this year by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that of the businesses starting in the 2011-2012 period, over a quarter of them failed in the first year. By the end of the third year, half of those new businesses had folded. So how do you avoid this fate? By assessing the feasibility of the product/service as it stands in your intended market. This means talking to people, letting people examine your product or experience your service. To assess your feasibility identify the costs of running the business and add them

ased in Katoomba, Urban Caves offers the latest and greatest designs in comfortable extended living. The family run business manufactures pre-fabricated cabins, suitable for use as a home office, studio or extra storage space. Owner, Guy Brown, said he started the business when he and his family moved to the Blue Mountains three years ago. “I wanted to connect with the local community and as a qualified Civil Engineer with professional experience in Structural Design Engineering, I knew I had the skills to build and sell these designs,” Mr Brown said. Mr Brown initially started building small prefabricated cabins that were imported from Europe. Naturally, after a little while he decided to start designing his own Australian-made cabins. “My product is the result of literally years of research, experience and passion,” Mr Brown said. “I think customers will be surprised by the quality of design, construction, and service that we

offer at Urban Caves.” Each of the standard cabins come with concrete footings, timber posts, Quantum sliding doors, plywood internal lining, lighting, power points and many other inclusions. Urban Caves also offers free delivery and installation, a fantastic bonus. Mr Brown said that the benefit of buying an Australian-made cabin is that the materials are all locally sourced. “We get our roofing supplies and external cladding from Joyce Roofing in Lawson, we always prefer supporting local businesses in the area by purchasing materials from them,” Mr Brown said. For more information or for a quote contact Guy on 0468 330 770 or email guy@urbancaves. com.au. No Council development applications are required to have an Urban Caves cabin however there are limitations on how they can be used for example they cannot be lived in. Contact Urban Caves now!

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO

Vegas to Penrith KATE REID

J

ohnny Edwards has made a career out of impersonating some of the world’s coolest performers. From 1993 to 2004 he took on the role of The King, becoming one of the most acclaimed Elvis tribute acts in the business. To his fans Elvis may have been a music icon, but to Johnny he was so much more. “It was more like idiolising a superhero in a way,” he explained. “He was a guy who could sing, was good looking, could fight, and wore the best clothes of anybody in any movie he was ever in,” he laughed. Johnny’s role as Elvis also led to his appearance in the film ‘3000 Miles to Graceland’, starring alongside Hollywood heavyweights Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell. “The funny thing about it is they were more enamoured at what we do for a living than we were at what they do for a living,” Johnny laughed. “They were impressed that we have to become somebody every night and be believable in front of a live audience; with them it’s take one and if it doesn’t happen you do another take. So it was kind of nice when you get people who are already in the business and looked up to, have a respect for what you do.”

Though Elvis helped open many doors it was Johnny’s love for Dean Martin, a member of the infamous Rat Pack, that led him to hang up his white Elvis jumpsuit for good. Luckily the change of icons wasn’t too much of a stretch. “With Dean Martin, there was a guy who was always the best dressed, could sing, was good looking, was always fighting to save Jerry and always got the girl in the end,” Johnny said. “So it was kind of cool that I went from Elvis to Dean and really didn’t have to change too much other than my hairstyle and my tuxedo.” These days the talented impersonator is a member of the long-running, awardwinning production ‘The Rat Pack is Back’, which will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers Leagues Club next Friday. The show will feature all the greatest hits from the legendary trio of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. It’s no easy task taking on some of the most unique and iconic performers show business has ever produced, especially a group like The Rat Pack, who are well known for their unique personalities and unexpected performances. “With the Rat Pack not everything they did on stage was planned, but when you’re good at what you do it seems effortless,” Johnny said.

“That’s the hard part, making it look like it’s effortless.” The Rat Pack from Vegas will be on at the Evan Theatre on Friday, December

9 at 8pm. Tickets are $46.55. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.penrith.panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

DVD The Shallows

Rated M // KATE REID First there was ‘Jaws’, now there’s ‘The Shallows’. Sharks are on the attack again in this ocean thriller that will have audiences on the edge of their seats. Nancy (Blake Lively) is a surfer who heads out to find her next perfect wave off the coast of a secluded section of beach. But things take a dangerous turn when she’s attacked by a great white shark. Only 200 yards from the shore Nancy must use her wits to help her survive. Those with a keen eye for locations might notice that ‘The Shallows’ was filmed in our own backyard, in the pristine waters of Lord Howe Island off the coast of NSW.

While ‘animal-attacks-human’ films have become a pretty popular sub genre, ‘The Shallows’ has been praised by critics as being more engaging than its often clichéd counterparts. Blake Lively has also been commended for her captivating onscreen performance.

The film was directed by Jaume ColletSara, who clearly has a love for all things thriller having worked on the action blockbuster ‘Non-Stop’ with Liam Neeson and horror films like ‘Orphan’. This is the perfect summertime movie, if you’re brave enough. Grab your copy of ‘The Shallows’ now!

Together they aim to take down ctOS 2.0 after they learn that corrupt corporations have been using the system to track and control citizens. ‘Watch Dogs 2’ offers dynamic openworld gameplay along with a brand new seamless multiplayer experience. There’s a range of hacker tools available including Quadcopter drones, RC cars and 3D printed weapons. If you loved ‘Watch Dogs’, this is not only a great follow-up, but an incredible step forward.

family friendly comedy from Dreamworks and the creators of ‘Shrek’. Starring Anna Kendrick as Poppy, and Justin Timberlake as Branch, the film takes audiences into the colourful, wondrous world of the overly optimistic Trolls, who live a life filled with music. Then there’s the comically pessimistic Bergens, who only find themselves happy when they have a troll in their stomach. Along with Kendrick and Timberlake,

your horoscopes

With the Sun in Sagittarius, plus Mars visiting Aquarius, you’re in Ram freedom-bunny mode! Then – on Wednesday – Uranus gives your adventure gene another giant boost. So this week will work best if you experiment and explore, stretch well beyond your comfort zone, and fraternise with a bohemian crowd. But a trip or business project could be delayed or re-scheduled. So strive to be patient and just take things as they come.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Communicating with work colleagues will be enjoyable this week, as you spark ideas off each other and express your feelings openly and sincerely. But resist the urge to take on more than you can realistically handle. And with Venus shifting into your career zone (from Thursday until January 3) it’s the perfect time to spruce up your work desk or office space.

With Mars moving through your international zone, it’s time to expand your world via travel, study, new friendships or foreign contacts. You’re keen to link up with like-minded people and, for some lucky singles, love is waiting online. But relations with a loved one will be challenging on the weekend. If you maintain a positive attitude and are serious about finding a practical solution, then things will turn out fine.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

When it comes to personal and professional matters, strive to get the balance right. Mars and Uranus encourage you to venture outside your cave as you explore and experiment. If you connect and collaborate with like-minded souls, then the sky’s the limit. On the weekend, stable Saturn reminds you to keep and consolidate the things in your daily life that are working out well.

A loved one may surprise you by making an unexpected move. Your first reaction is probably the best one, as long as you honestly express what’s really on your mind. The more you combine your creative talents the more stimulating the week will be. Attached Lions – it’s time to reboot a long-term relationship with a romantic rendezvous. Singles – don’t sit around waiting for your soul mate to magically appear. Be proactive.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Virgos prefer things to run efficiently and smoothly but there’s unpredictable energy about on Wednesday, so drop the perfectly planned schedule and take things as they come. And is your financial situation less than fabulous? Money matters get a welcome boost this week as Jupiter sends a lucky opportunity your way. But avoid going on a spontaneous spending spree on the weekend!

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

The focus is firmly on friends, as Mars moves through your friendship zone. But don’t let your peer group influence you too much. The planets encourage you to be your own person and do your own thing. So your motto for the moment is from Jim Morrison: “A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself”. Creativity is high on the weekend. But don’t let your tendency to gossip come between you and others.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

The planets send an unexpected opportunity your way. But you must recognise good fortune when it comes along or it will pass you by. Home is where the heart is when peace planet Venus moves through your domestic zone. So it’s the perfect time to deal with family members in a cool, calm and diplomatic fashion. Singles – you could meet your soul mate via an introduction from a relative.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

This week’s stars celebrate and strengthen your inner teacher/mentor/ coach. So don’t underestimate (and undervalue) your natural ability to encourage others to achieve their personal best. Your motto for the moment is from fellow Sagittarian Walt Disney: “I think of myself as a little bee. I go from one area of the Studio to another and gather pollen and sort of stimulate everybody. I guess that’s the job I do”.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

This week the planets help you power through projects with plenty of enthusiasm and a practical plan. So don’t waste the opportunity to get things done! The combination of energy and endurance is a winning double. But avoid being uncharacteristically rash with cash and credit. And is it time to embrace your inner humanitarian, as you contribute your considerable talents to a local group?

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

On Wednesday, Mars links up with your ruler Uranus so it’s time to be crazy brave as you take a calculated risk on an ambitious project. Don’t try and do it all on your own though. The more you involve others (from family and friends to work colleagues and social media contacts) the more your embryonic plans will blossom and grow in exciting and unexpected ways! With Venus vamping into your sign, you’ll be at your bohemian best.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Artistic inspiration is high this week but don’t waste precious time daydreaming. Do your best to turn creative ideas into a tangible form. And strive to be creative, and compassionate. Pleasure planet Venus moves through your spirituality zone from Thursday, so pace yourself Pisces, slow down, and enjoy looking within. Solo time – via yoga, meditation or contemplation – is essential for you.

How to ensure a stress-free time hosting Christmas Day Christmas can be a busy time for everybody, but a little bit of planning and organisation can change everything for the better...

Kate Reid Nutritionist kate.reid@ westernweekender.com.au @kate_reid6

It’s only three weeks ‘til Christmas! Now I know that I’ve probably stressed some of you out with that statement but take a deep breath and read on. Yes it’s true that Christmas can be hectic, but with a little planning and organisation it can also be a joyous, and delicious, time of year. Buy what you can early and keep an eye out for bargains Christmas has a knack for destroying the bank balance, so over the next few weeks keep an eye out for items that are on sale. Consider purchasing anything with a long shelf life now so all you have to worry about later is fresh food. Also, be sure to stash your food haul out of sight, you don’t want to go to the pantry on Christmas Eve and find the chips and lollies have gone missing! Consider pre-packaged sides, bulk cooking and freezable items Cute little bite sized eats may look nice, but they can also lead to a lot of unnecessary stress and preparation time come Christmas Day.

Get together a list of exactly what needs to be done and when so everything is ready to go on the day. This is also a good opportunity to start delegating tasks so one member of the family isn’t lumped with everything. Ask guests to help out Just because you’re hosting Christmas doesn’t mean you can’t ask guests to bring something with them. Everyone has a special recipe that they’re particularly proud of, so divvy up the responsibilities. This way you’ll also get to try a range of meals and may even find a new favourite dish.

When deciding on what to serve consider meal items that are easy to make in bulk, already come prepared or can be made and frozen until needed. Salad mixes, potato bakes and roast veg (pop them in the oven with some olive oil, salt and thyme and you’re done) are all easy to prepare. For dessert try making a Christmas cake a few weeks in advance and serve with custard or ice-cream on the day. Have a plan It may seem a little pedantic but trust me, having a plan for the days leading up to the event will make the whole process a lot easier.

WW25898

n easy answer if you are wondering what to give that aspiring wine buff this Christmas, or even one already well into their wine enjoyment, is Rob Geddes’ informative Australian Wine Vintages 2017. It gives detailed tasting notes for over 3,500 Australian and New Zealand wines in the print version, and 13,500 in the App. Now in its 34th edition, The Gold Book as it’s also known, is a great guide towards exploring everything from wine country to the shelves of your local bottle shop. The book is also equally helpful in understanding wine varieties and the regions in which they are grown, and invaluable for those wanting to cellar and invest in wine. One of fewer than 20 Masters of Wine in Australia, all wines reviewed are tasted by Rob and his select panel comprising several fellow Masters of Wine, hand-picked sommeliers, major retail buyers and winemakers. Australian Wine Vintages 2017 is priced at $34.95. For more information or to pick up a copy for a loved one this Christmas, visit www.thegoldbook.com.au or via the App Store and Google Play.

Five exercise tips to assist with falls prevention

your

Falls cost more than $1.4 billion a year, but with some handy exercises, you can reduce your chances of a nasty situation...

Alicia Whiticker Exercise Physiologist OnePoint Health 4732 5188 onepointhealth.com.au

In Australia the average cost of falls prevention currently sits higher than the cost of car accidents. Falls are increasing at a rate that is out of control and by 2015 the annual bill increased to $1.4 billion. One in three people over the age of 65 and one in two people over the age of 80 are at risk of a fall that will lead to a serious injury. For people over the age of 65, you are three times more likely to end up in hospital after a fall. Risk factors that can contribute to falls include: strength, balance, coordination, walking speed, gait imbalances, poor vision, medication and reduced sensation of lower limbs. Exercise can help to improve most risk factors associated with falls and decrease your chance of falling. A study that was recently completed in Australia concluded that three hours of high challenging balance exercise per week slashed your risk of falling by 40 per cent or more. Exercise for falls prevention will cover the five main points below as well as work on improving your general cardiovascular fitness.

1. Strengthen your lower limbs: This will help with your ability to stop yourself from falling or recover after tripping or slipping. Stronger lower limb muscles, especially the calf muscles, can significantly reduce your risk of falls. 2. Gait imbalances: This will help to improve walking stride, stride length and help minimise your risk of tripping over your own feet. Gait training should also focus on your ability to walk properly using walking aids. 3. Balance and coordination: High chal-

lenging balance exercises are proven to help reduce the risk of falls. 4. Upper limb strength: This will help with your falls recovery strategies and give you the ability to pick yourself up after a fall or increase your ability to access a device to call for help. 5. Walking speed: A minimum walking speed of 3km/h is recommended to stay safely active within the community. Falls prevention classes are run at OnePoint Health every Thursday at 10am. See you there!

The right pair of sunglasses can really complete your look Getting fashion right can be tough, especially when it comes to sunglasses, but we’ve got the advice you need to get the best shades this summer...

Alyce Madden Westfield Penrith Follow me on Instagram @styled.by.alyce

Summer’s most important high functioning accessory has to be a pair of signature shades. Not only do they protect your eyes from harmful UV rays but they can also complete your outfit. Whether it’s a beach holiday or Friday drinks on steamy afternoons, the right pair of sunglasses will always play a vital role in your style wardrobe. This summer ‘16 is all about the comeback of the retro shades! Vintage inspired sunglasses are becoming more popular than ever. Look out for some grunge-style Kurt Cobain shades made with bold plastic frames in white or red. For a sundrenched hippy vibe to wear on the beach look to classic 70s’ aviators with a yellow tint lens. Supermodel Bella Hadid has been seen rocking a red pair with smaller rounder frames taking 90s coolness to another level. At Westfield Penrith, Jay Jays have the Valentina love heart sunglasses in gold, perfect for your unique style, wear out in

the sun with a summery maxi dress and a smile! Finding the right pair definitely includes trying some on as different face shapes are to blame for your friend being able to pull off those amazing cat eyes and the

exact same pair looking extremely exaggerated and way too big on you! Round For a face with rounder features go for geometric shaped shades. To elongate your face rectangular frames will help and cat eyes will sharpen your features. Try a square pair of aviators! Heart If you have a pointy chin with a broad brow your face tends to be more heart shaped. Bottom heavy frames help bring balance and streamline your look. Shapes that are parallel and extend past the width of your face complement a stronger jawline. Square Opposite to the round face girls offset sharper faces with rounder frames. Look to bigger round sunglasses with a curvier frame, very classy! Oval: The most lucky of all face shapes is the oval, as you can get away with almost any look! Rihanna, being a perfect face shape example and definitely a fashion forward girl, wears whatever she wants. Try on some edgy shades like smaller circular frames or why not go oversized! Check out OPSM in store for the Tiffany & Co Tiffany Infinity sunglasses, timeless with the right amount of elegance and refinement.

Testimonials We recently sold our first home through Troy who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Being our first time selling Troy walked us through every step in the process. Although Troy had fantastic support from his team at Jim Aitken, as an individual he always went above and beyond and kept us in the loop the whole time with his integrity and honesty. Troy is a true professional and aims to deliver a positive experience for the buyer and seller, and for us as the seller this was exactly our experience. With each step expectations were put into place and he communicated with us the whole time. If you have read this testimony this far it probably sounds like I’m blowing Troy’s trumpet, and I am. I would have no hesitation recommending Troy to any seller or buyer.
