T
he Greens have launched a strong fivepoint plan to protect biodiversity in the Blue Mountains. Recently, Blue Mountains and western Sydney Greens councillors and candidates met with NSW Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi in Lapstone to launch the new plan. The plan has been developed to oppose the Government’s new Native Vegetation Act which is part of the NSW biodiversity reforms. The Native Vegetation Act regulates land clearing and would allow for the process to take place more freely across the state. “The Government has a raft of so-called ‘biodiversity reforms’ that will greenlight land clearing across the state and be devastating for our biodiversity,” Ms Faruqi said. “We live in an urban corridor containing significant biodiversity and entire ecosystems that play a critical role in conserving the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area to either side of us. We must protect the environment, not overdevelopment.” The Greens’ five-point plan supports stronger local planning laws that would protect and conserve biodiversity and the development of new nature reserves and green corridors for wildlife. Greens Candidate for Ward 1 Kerry Brown believes the Blue Mountains are particularly at risk with 10 per cent of all threatened species in NSW found in our region. Story continues on » p. 5

Lending a hand to those in need Fundraising dinner later this month aims to help underprivileged youths in Cambodia ERIN MAMO
he Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School at Torrens University will host its annual fundraising dinner next Thursday to raise money for underprivileged Cambodian youths. On August 25 the hotel school will raise money for Sala Bai Hotel School in Siem Reap, which was established to address low school attendance among the population, and in particular the huge drop out rate of young girls leaving school to help at home or get married. Laureate Australia General Manager Hospitality, Jerome Casteigt, said the event was just one of many initiatives the School was involved in to support Sala Bai. “We have a long standing relationship with Sala Bai Hotel School and admire their commitment to encouraging and helping young Cambodians to continue their studies and seek work opportunities upon graduation,” Mr Casteigt said. “We share a similar vision for our own students; we want to provide them with the best possible start to their careers.” Established in 2002, Sala Bai is a free hotel school that provides around 100
T
students each year with hospitality training and assists them to find work once they have graduated. While at Sala Bai students gain kitchen, restaurant, housekeeping and front of house knowledge and skills that they can then put into practice through four months of industry placement, set up by the school. Over the last 11 years the Leura based hotel school has contributed more than $170,000 to Sala Bai and has sent over teachers and graduates to develop programs and donated computers, books and other essential items. The fundraising dinner will be held at Chambers Restaurant on the Hotel School’s Leura Campus from 6.30pm on August 25. On the night guests will be treated to a three course dinner, wine and tea and coffee. There will be a number of auctions that guests will be able to bid on and items up for sale will include accommodation packages and wine. Tickets are $99 per person, with 100 per cent of the funds raised going directly to Sala Bai. To purchase tickets or for more information call Kristine Porcelli on 4780 1631.

rmed with my top secret login, an NBN connection and a family size bag of Maltesers, I sat down to complete the 2016 Census at precisely 8.23pm last Tuesday night. As much as the rather bizarrely scheduled re-run of ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ over on the GO! channel was appealing, I put my civic duty first and headed for the computer. Attempt number one – a dismal failure and that cranky little error message nobody wants to see. Surely this was just a temporary setback, after all the Australian Bureau of Statistics had guaranteed the site wouldn’t crash. The Australian Bureau of Statistics, of all places, didn’t get this wrong, did they? Attempts number two, three and four were met with a similar failed result. Truth is, what did they think was going to happen? It was obvious to even the most novice Internet user that the infrastructure simply wasn’t going to cope with millions of people trying to connect at the same time. Much of that discussion was drowned out by those in tin foil hats who, despite most government departments already knowing their business, thought the whole thing was just one giant conspiracy. By the time my family size bag of Maltesers was half done (that’s not a paid commercial by the way, though I’d be more than happy to accept any free offerings), my attitude towards the Census had changed considerably. The excitement was well and truly gone. I gave up, frustrated, and flicked the TV
A
“What did they think was going to happen?”
back on just in time to see Chevy Chase get the Christmas lights working. As it stands, I still haven’t managed to get time to complete the Census and I’m struggling to feel motivated to do it. Important as it may be, it’s ridiculous that something as crucial as a national Census is reduced to an embarrassing laughing stock because the bloody website didn’t work. The same website organisers said would easily cope with the huge influx of traffic in a short space of time. Yes, you have several weeks to complete the questionnaire before any trouble starts coming your way. Yes, you actually could have completed it earlier. But that’s not really the point, is it? The Australian Bureau of Statistics asked us specifically to complete the Census on Tuesday, August 9 and then failed to deliver the technology and infrastructure capable of making that happen. A big deal? In the big scheme of things, not really.
But it does go to show that if you have shares in a led pencil company, you can breathe a sigh of relief. We won’t be heading towards an online voting platform at elections any time soon. At least talkback radio wasn’t short on topics on Wednesday morning either. But the greatest lesson is this piece of irony – how did the people responsible for the Census not accurately predict the number of people that would be online at peak times? The Bureau was blaming hackers on Wednesday morning, which only raises more serious questions about the privacy surrounding the Census data given the site was quite clearly vulnerable. Tweet of the night? There were many, but this doozy from Malcolm Turnbull hardly won him any fans: “We filled in the @ABSCensus tonight online – v easy to do. And so important for planning better Govt services & investment for the future.” At least the connection over in Point Piper was up to scratch. And another thing... The world has gone stark raving mad if we’re worried about calling female athletes at the Olympics ‘girls’. Janice Crosswhite, the vice president of the International Association for Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women, says the female athletes at the Games should be referred to as women. Janice should get a real job. Ironic, really, that the word ‘girls’ is used in her organisation’s title. The suggestion that the term ‘girls’ is offensive is just plain ridiculous.

Greens defend biodiversity
Making Christmas a little brighter
Story continued from » p. 1
Local group sends care packages to children in need overseas
“The very high levels of biodiversity in the Mountains are within our national park and also on adjacent private land in the Local Government Area that provides critical buffer zones,” said Ms Brown. “The new system for land management would remove the ‘improve or maintain environmental outcomes’ requirement, inevitably leading to broad scale clearing.” Candidate for Ward 3 Joel MacRae is also concerned. “Our council’s planning protections, developed over the last 25 years to conserve our unique natural environment, have been exemplary. Greens representatives on Council will vigorously defend these as a benchmark of good practice,” he said.

he Lower Mountains Operation Christmas Child Group are changing lives in under-resourced countries. Each year the group collects and packs 3000 shoe boxes full of much needed supplies for children in the Asia Pacific region who are suffering from poverty and disease, which are then distributed around Christmas time. Based at Glenbrook Baptist Church the group collects items all year round so that each box contains something for school, something to wear, something for hygiene, something to play with and something to love. Head of the Lower Mountains Operation Christmas Child Group, Jeanette Logue said each box comes full of unconditional love. “It’s such a delight to see the happy faces of the children when they open their boxes,” she said. Each box costs approximately $9 to fill and ship to the country in need. The project group relies heavily on donations from the Blue Mountains and Penrith area to fill each of the boxes. On September 25 the group will hold their next fundraiser with the Sydney

Refused bail Christmas is a little brighter for children overseas thanks to a local community group Welsh Choir set to put on a concert at the Penrith Anglican College Lighthouse Theatre. The Choir is made up of over 70 individuals from all over Sydney with Welsh background. Guests at the concert can expect to hear some familiar songs with a variety of genres to be performed. Ms Logue said she is looking forward to
a fun day and raising some funds for the project. “Last year the project sent shoe boxes to Cambodia, Vietnam, Fiji, Thailand, Samoa and Vanuatu and we are hoping to do the same this year,” she said. Ms Logue was lucky enough to travel to Cambodia to distribute some of the boxes that the group has worked tirelessly to pack last year.
A Lapstone woman has been refused bail after repeatedly failing to turn up to court. Anna Sheena Saunders appeared before Penrith Local Court from the doc last Monday, having been picked up at Kingswood on a warrant. The court heard the Explorers Road resident, currently on bail, had a number of non-appearances at both Penrith and Katoomba courts and had a history of property theft, warrants and bail breaches. The matter was adjourned. – Alena Higgins

Hollywood hopes star shines bright Labor team to focus on protecting the environment as Local Government Election nears ERIN MAMO
ouncillor Romola Hollywood will contest her position in the upcoming Blue Mountains City Council election on September 10. Cr Hollywood will seek re-election in Ward 2 with Annette Bennett and Tim Murawski on her ticket for the Labor team. The Wentworth Falls resident has been a Councillor for Ward 2 since 2012. “If re-elected I will continue to fight to maintain the character of the Blue Mountains, to protect our towns and our fragile environment from over-development and to create connected communities through more footpaths and better pedestrian access and safety,” Cr Hollywood said. Part of the reason Cr Hollywood is seeking re-election is because she believes her local area is facing a number of threats to its environment, one in particular being the proposed Western Sydney Airport. “I was shocked to learn that the Blue Mountains community and its bushland and wilderness was overlooked in the Environmental Impact Statement that the Government released last year in relation to the new airport,” she said “We need to protect our Blue Mountains
C
Tim Murawski, Romola Hollywood and Annette Bennett World Heritage Area for future generations and this means ensuring that our community and our wilderness areas are not compromised.”
Cr Hollywood said she is proud to be leading a strong, energetic and experienced Labor team for Ward 2 at the upcoming September elections.
Since being elected in 2012 the Councillor has achieved a number of successes in her ward area, including building new footpaths and delivering pedestrian access over Park Road Bridge in Woodford, improving amenities at Linden Park, extending access to the dog off-leash area at Pitt Park and securing funding to upgrade Lawson Hall and funding to improve parking and access at the Bullaburra Rural Fire Brigade station. Cr Hollywood is a Blue Mountains resident who has lived in the area over 30 years, raising her family here and actively worked in a range of community organisations particularly in the arts. Now, she is committing to ensuring there is a Labor team in Ward 2 that will continue to provide for the community. “I took a clear plan to the last election to improve local infrastructure and services, to protect our environment and to preserve the character of our beautiful Blue Mountains,” Cr Hollywood said. “Our Labor team wants to continue our strong record of delivering for our community.” What are the issues that matter to you most heading into the September 10 election? killer. Recent figures released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) show participation in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program increased this year by only one per cent from the previous report. The recent 2016 monitoring report shows just 37 per cent of people invited to participate in the screening report between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014 undertook screening. Bowel cancer prevention charity, the Jodi Lee Foundation believes further measures need to be taken to raise awareness of the killer. “We know much more needs to be done to increase awareness of bowel cancer and encourage eligible Australians to screen using the simple at home test,” said Founder of the Jodi Lee Foundation, Nick Lee. “A greater focus on public awareness about the importance of screening every two years from age 50 is vital if we are to save more lives.”
Mr Lee started the foundation after losing his wife Jodi to bowel cancer in 2010. Jodi, a mum of two young children, was just 41-years-old. 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated, if they are detected early. Alan Thomas, from Blackheath, is a perfect example of one of the lucky ones who got in early. At 67, Mr Thomas was diagnosed with Stage 1 bowel cancer after noticing blood when he passed a bowel movement. Within a month of being diagnosed, Mr Thomas had undergone surgery to have the cancer removed and is now cancer free. “I was fortunate that I had surgery and found out it was still in the first stage of growth,” Mr Thomas said. “With bowel cancer the sooner you get it treated and removed, the more chance you have of survival. “I thoroughly advise that anyone who has a family history of it or really anyone who is over the age of 50 goes for regular check-ups.” Now at 76, Mr Thomas is in good health and spends his days painting and is even completing a university degree in fine arts.

I love checking out food pictures on Instagram, mostly because I eat out a lot and I like to see what I’m ordering rather than relying on a menu. Unfortunately there is a downside to this huge range of food porn. As with any visual medium we’ve started to believe that healthy, nutritious food must look a certain way. Of course there’s nothing wrong with a well presented meal, but for the general public it can appear as if a healthy diet can’t be achieved without a degree in
kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
food styling and a tonne of cash. So this week I wanted to address some of these myths. Blend it Back before the Internet we used to memorialise fruit in oil paintings. These days that fruit has been peeled, blended, turned into a smoothie bowl, photographed and posted online. Again, there’s nothing
inherently wrong with a smoothie bowl, and if you find them tasty then by all means go for it, but there’s also nothing wrong with a couple of pieces of fruit each day instead. Whole fruits are cheaper, contain more fibre and aren’t as energy dense as smoothies which often contain far more than the recommended two serves of fruit. Going green I’m not sure who’s doing the marketing for kale but damn they’ve done an amazing job. They’ve actually managed to make a not-sopleasant tasting leaf ‘cool’. The issue I have with this is not that people are eating more kale, the more vegetables you consume the better, my issue is that people think kale is the be all and end all of green leafy vegetables. I’m sure kale haters will be happy to know that Popeye’s favourite veg spinach is a very worthy substitute. Bring back the bread I feel a little sorry for the sandwich. Due to its humble status among meals it doesn’t tend to show up on social media quite as much as its more flamboyant cousin, the burger. But honestly sandwiches are a fantastic meal, both taste and nutrition wise.

ling and a sanctuary for family members in need. Renting, no matter how detailed your adviser has created the ‘renting versus ownership’ spreadsheet, just doesn’t deliver the same contentment. 2. Maximise your superannuation. In other words go hard throughout your working life in terms of contributions. Add as much extra as you can, within Government limits. 3. Eliminate debt, this speaks for itself and includes all credit cards, personal loans and everything else. 4. Create some savings outside of super. Develop a strategy to accumulate funds alongside your superannuation savings. The government (all political persuasions) is unable to be trusted to not alter super at some future time to negate lump sum withdrawals. Be ready should it happen. 5. Ensure you have all the necessary estate planning issues dealt with. Wills, binding death nominations and all the other bits and pieces, allowing your family peace of mind. See you next week!

During my time as a financial planner probably the most common question I received was, “What do I need to do so I can retire?” Not very surprising I guess, as I was in the retirement planning business after all. It would have been pretty odd if the most common question I received was, “Are elephants hard to domesticate?” Well I have absolutely no idea about elephants, but thankfully I know a thing or two about retirement strategy! So here are five strategy ideas to get you on the right track.

he Olympics have rolled around again, which means a return of the armchair experts on diving, badminton, fencing and GrecoRoman wrestling (and arguments about whether synchronised swimming is really a sport). At some point though, most of us watch the Olympic competitors with awe, and muse about what it must take for them to compete at that elite level. Most small business owners are not so different from our Olympians. It takes stamina, commitment and many hours of hard work to build and grow a successful business. If you have been in business for longer than two years, you are amongst the ‘elite’ – and you have many similarities to Olympic competitors. There would be few (if any) Olympians who have not experienced setbacks. To get where they are, they have learnt to be resilient, to ignore the critics and to bounce back from negative experiences. These are all extremely important attributes for business owners. Firstly, it is being aware that there will be
setbacks and then it is being determined not to let those experiences defeat you. All Olympians know that it is not enough just to have ability. Passion is vital: it is what will keep you going and willing to jump through hoops. Without passion, your business will become ‘just another job’ and won’t survive the long term. Ian Thorpe, one of our best known Olympians, had a wonderful attitude before one Olympic final, when he was allocated Lane 5 (historically the ‘fastest lane’ is Lane 4). His response was, “There is water in every lane, so it is OK”. It is this sort of pragmatism that is important for business owners too. There will be times when it appears that we have missed out on the best pathway to success, but sometimes we need a dose of pragmatism to realise that we need to make the best of what we have in front of us. And to end with a classic Aussie way of viewing things, here is a quote from Olympic shooter Russell Mark: “A silver medal gets you as many free beers as a gold medal does”.

ecently I had a trend of clients who had eBay shops. Several clients had a diverse range of products that they thought would be popular on eBay and help lift their income. Were they right? Research is a cornerstone of an effective small business, so what research can be done in order to identify popular selling items? For eBay, you simply need to type the web address www.eBay.com.au/trending. This will give you a list of the top nine items that are currently being searched and purchased. You can also do a keyword search on your product and then select “Sold Listings” from the “Show Only” section on the left hand side and sort your results by highest price. That way you can gauge how much customers are prepared to pay for similar goods. Facebook is also handy for finding trends. On the right hand side of your personal feed are two sections worth looking at when researching. The first is “Trending on Facebook”. This tends to show what other users are looking at on Facebook.
4736 8640 24 HR EMERGENCY WORK
Normally, it covers news items and major events, but occasionally it will reveal a company in the news or a product in the news. The second section is the paid advertising section, underneath the trends. These ads are specifically targeted to your Facebook habits and other users like you. You can gain an insight into what companies are actively promoting. A quick way to assess trends is to join Pinterest. Pinterest is a popular social media platform in which the user will post pictures grouped according to their interest. These groupings are shared with friends and the general public. Watching the Pinterest feed will give you an instant glance at what users are currently sharing and can help you identify trends. Pinterest is very popular with women and so if your target base is women, this is a great resource. There are more resources available as well, such as Google Trends and Trend Hunter. t took what lead singer Jason Singh describes as “150 text messages” to ex-bandmate Tim Watson to get 90s band Taxiride back together. Best known for their hits ‘Get Set’ and ‘Everywhere You Go’ the rockers from Melbourne are back on the road with their original line-up for the first time since 2001. “It came to a stage where I just really missed the sound of the four guys singing together,” Jason said of the reason behind the band reforming. “It had been 10 years since Tim Watson and I had even spoken. I just thought stuff this, I’m just going to pick up the phone; so I started texting him and texting him and texting him.
“I ended up getting a reply on New Year’s Eve the year before last.” That reply led to a meeting, rehearsals and a string of gigs over the last year. The time apart has seen Taxiride develop as individuals, and as musicians, but for Jason the appeal of those hit songs hasn’t changed. “We realised that the band’s still really relevant so that inspired us to shoot for bigger things again,” he said. While the reformation process has been a relatively smooth one, things weren’t quite as cohesive for the band the first time round. There was a struggle to find common ground between different personalities who were living in each other’s pockets throughout years of touring and recording commitments. “It’s not often that the four guys in
Taxiride would hang out, probably never, and that’s the thing that we used to fight against and push against and rebel against with each other, trying to make everyone like yourself,” Jason said. “But now everyone’s grown up. I’ve had kids, Tim Watson’s just had his first child, it changes you a lot and your perspective changes a lot, things that would have annoyed you just don’t anymore. “We all still have our differences but one thing we have realised is that it’s those differences that make us special.” Bringing their distinct talents together to create their signature four piece harmony was what initially took Taxiride from the pubs of Melbourne to the boardrooms of some of the biggest record companies in the world. “We had 11 record deals on the table from everyone on the planet trying to
sign the band,” Jason said. “We had Randy Jackson flying out from New York and Ahmet Ertegun flying out from the UK to try and sign our little band, which was ridiculous.” With a tour with fellow 90s band The Badloves kicking off this month the obvious question for fans is whether there’s a new Taxiride album on the horizon. “That’s my next 150 text messages,” Jason laughed. “I’d love to get into doing some new music. “We’ll either explode and break up again, or it will be the best thing ever,” he laughed Taxiride and the Badloves will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 9 at 8pm. Tickets are $40. To purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl. com.au or call 9677 4916.

Ê HBO has confirmed that ‘Game of Thrones’ will finally come to an end after its eighth season. While season seven will arrive late 2017, the world’s most popular show will wind up at the end of 2018. A spin-off series is on the cards as well, so it’s not all bad news. Ê Foxtel is closing down the SoHo channel on October 1 and replacing it with Binge. SoHo content will move to Showcase and other channels while Binge will be similar to the BoxSets channel and feature shows like ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Super Girl’, ‘Pretty Little Liars’, ‘Empire’, ‘Girls’, ‘Veep’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’. SoHo launched in 2012, replacing the W channel. Ê Talk show host Jimmy Fallon has been confirmed as host of next year’s ‘Golden Globe Awards’. Surprisingly, the last major awards show Fallon hosted was the ‘Emmy Awards’ back in 2010. Ê The ABC will launch a new show starring comedian and artist Anh Do titled ‘Anh’s Brush with Fame’. In the eight part series, Do paints portraits and interviews his subjects. RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The Sun is currently shining in your creativity zone, which encourages you to improvise and be as spontaneous as possible. Then the creative cream will really rise to the top! Sometimes rambunctious Rams come on too strong and scare others away. You’re passionate about initiating changes – especially at work but try to persuade people in more subtle ways. This week the best outlet for fiery energy is via vigorous sport, extreme travel or passionate projects.

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Obsessive or possessive behaviour could be on the menu this week… unless you control your jealous side. Just remember there’s plenty of love for everyone. So trust your instincts, be generous, and share the affection around. Thursday’s Full Moon lights up your Brilliant Career zone. But are you making the most of the numerous opportunities that are buzzing around? Don’t be a bashful Bull! It’s time to step up to the professional plate and show others what you are capable of.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
When it comes to your social media strategy, it’s time for an innovative approach that makes you stand out from the crowd. Thursday’s Full Moon urges you to focus on your goals and aspirations for the future, especially involving travel or further education. Plus involve a family member in your long-term plans. They have an alternative perspective that will open up your options considerably. You could also play gracious host to family or friends who come to stay over.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

A work situation is likely to veer off in a totally unexpected direction early in the week, so keep your adaptability muscles well-flexed and be open to change and experimentation. Do your best to avoid being snappy on Thursday, when the Full Moon magnifies your mood swings and heightens your emotions. If you’ve been burying your head in the sand, then a financial problem could come to a head and demand to be addressed.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
The stars encourage you to express yourself in your own totally original way! Be inspired by birthday great Madonna, “I stand for freedom of expression, doing what you believe in, and going after your dreams”. Loved ones will demand more of your time and undivided attention on Thursday. Attached Cats – is there a tugof-war between you and your partner? Do you want more freedom, while they yearn for more commitment? The only satisfactory solution is to meet them halfway.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
It’s time to patch up a misunderstanding with a child, parent or friend but don’t jump to hasty conclusions. Get all the relevant facts first. With Saturn in Sagittarius, resist the temptation to be too hard on yourself and overly impressed by the outward trappings of material success. Strive to be as authentic as possible … true to your talents and core values. Be inspired by Coco Chanel, “How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone”.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Mercury (your patron planet) is visiting Virgo, which boosts your Eagle Eye, your close attention to detail, and your micromanaging skills. But it also increases your tendency to criticise others and make mountains out of molehills. So take a chill pill! If you insist on sweating the small stuff, then it will be a long and exhausting week. When it comes to your family life, the hard work you put in now and the sacrifices you make will pay off handsomely further down the track.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Communication planet Mercury is visiting fellow earth sign Virgo, which suits critical thinking; research work; facts and figures; plus practical projects. But don’t let minor details blind you to the bigger picture. Venus and Jupiter encourage you to explore and experiment as you study, travel or venture into brave new personal territory. It’s also very important to capitalise on your current international contacts. With careful nurturing, who knows where they will lead in the future?
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Under the influence of the Full Moon, your current peer group is in a state of flux and you could find an old friendship suddenly ends, while a new one develops in wonderfully unexpected ways. You can be dazzled by outer beauty though, so make sure you’re not deceived by glossy outward appearances. Look beneath the surface to evaluate a person’s true inner worth. Plus put aside some special ‘me time’ where you can concentrate on the three R’s – rest, relaxation and renewal.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
You feel like instigating some major changes but be careful you don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater! f you’re a Riesling buff and the Hunter Valley’s on the agenda, ensure a visit to McGuigan Wines – and that you’ve got a lazy $65 in the wallet for a bottle of their 2010 McGuigan Shortlist Eden Valley Riesling. Because they’ve got just a few bottles remaining of this incredible drop, that won itself Trophy for Best Australian White Wine at the 2016 International Wine Challenge. A naturally ecstatic Chief Winemaker, Neil McGuigan says the win reflects just how well this wine over-delivers at its price point. And while it’s one to buy now on that upcoming Hunter visit – it’s available only at the cellar door as all retail outlets have sold-out – it’s one you’ll also be able to pop in the cellar for some other extra-special occasion down the track. Made from fruit off two select Eden Valley vineyards in the Barossa Ranges, this is a drop with a lovely fresh, crisp and zippy palate, wonderfully fresh-cut lime acidity, and has that beautiful minerality that the Eden Valley is so renowned for. For that special celebratory occasion, think matching with oysters to start, and for mains grilled lobster with corn on the cob, or lobster cold with coleslaw on the side. One to note: Wolf Blass have released a range of innovative wines under a new Blass by Wolf Blass label it says have been inspired by “a new wave of unconventional winemaking, and hand-crafted in the spirit of contemporary style and experimentation”. One stand-out is a 2014 Blass Noir Barossa Valley Shiraz that was made from fruit harvested at optimum maturity from low-yielding vineyards near Greenock on the western side of the Barossa Valley.

ormer Blaxland High School student Jessica Fox may have missed out on Gold at the Rio Olympics, but she managed to snare a Bronze Medal in the Women’s K1 event last Friday morning. The 22-year-old world champion completed the tricky course in 100.49 seconds and was briefly in the Gold Medal position, but judges implemented a two second penalty on her time after reviewing footage of her run. It mattered little anyway, with Spain’s Maialen Chourraut stunning the field by completing the run in 98.65 seconds. Chourraut claimed the Gold while New Zealand’s Luuka Jones took home Silver. Fox qualified fifth fastest for the Final, getting through her Semi-Final unscathed despite windy conditions on the Rio course. It meant that after moving into the lead in the Final, she had to nervously wait for four other competitors to finish their runs. Speaking with the Record from Rio, Fox’s manager Graham Chapman said he was exceptionally proud of the Leonay local. “To manage an Olympic athlete who has now achieved two podium finishes in two Olympics is incredible,” he said. “Jess had a great run, the touch the judges saw was on video and they have advanced technology so we are OK with that. I couldn’t be prouder, she deserves every bit of success.” Fox’s Bronze coincides with her Olympic Silver that she picked up in London.
