he division between the city and regional centres is bigger than ever as worrying statistics reveal that Blue Mountains residents are more likely to die than our North Shore counterparts. The data from the Social Health Atlas paints a sombre portrait of health in the Blue Mountains Local Government Area, as we hold high rates of premature mortality in most categories where data has been collected. With similar populations based on the 2016 Census, Blue Mountains City and Willoughby City Local Government Areas (LGA) vastly differ in deaths. The total premature mortality

Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman said it’s not surprising to see health discrepancies between the Blue Mountains and a more affluent compact urban area such as Willoughby. “The Blue Mountains covers 27 villages spread across 100km of ridgelines,” she said. “Many Blue Mountains residents face challenges in accessing health services from GPs through to specialists.” When broken down into cause, the premature mortality statistics reveal a sad truth about living west of Sydney city. riter J.K. Rowling has an impressive 11.4 million followers on Twitter. Good on her, but having such a powerful voice on social media comes with responsibility. Last week, the popular ‘Harry Potter’ author called out US President Donald Trump after a video popped up online appearing to show him ignoring a young disabled toddler in a wheelchair on stage at a press conference about health reform. “How stunning, and how horrible, that Trump cannot bring himself to shake the hand of a small boy who only wanted to touch the President,” scorned Rowling in one of an array of scathing Tweets about the incident. It didn’t take long for the truth to come out – the video had been edited and the real footage showed Trump approaching and embracing the toddler. Rowling didn’t check the facts – but she certainly isn’t the first person and won’t be the last to make such an error. Her mistake was an innocent one, I’m sure, but it took several days for her to retract her claim and delete the tweets (and there’s still no apology to Trump). The concern here isn’t J.K. Rowling, who clearly has very strong views on American politics (despite being British), but moreso the dangerous world of social media, where more and more young people are choosing to get their news. Survey after survey shows you that younger generations are turning to Twitter and Facebook to get their information, but it’s who they are following that is of concern when it comes to news consumption.

“All of a sudden you’re consuming public relations, not news”

Celebrities rule the social media world, with the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian having millions more followers than respected news sources like CNN and the New York Times. It’s why celebrities – like it or not – have a responsibility to ensure that what they’re Tweeting, if it’s in the news sphere, is accurate. And if it’s not, they need to make sure appropriate corrections are Tweeted to the same audience. You see technology hasn’t just sounded the warning siren for daily print newspapers, talkback radio and traditional news bulletins, but it’s also declared war with the traditional expected fact checking that came with such media outlets. The other issue is that when it comes to social media news consumption, people are more likely to only follow accounts and people that deliver the news they want to hear. A Labor voter may follow Bill Shorten,

but not Malcolm Turnbull, and vice versa. Independence and variety is thrown out the window when you only read news that aligns with your beliefs and ideals and all of a sudden you’re consuming public relations, not news. So while we may be able to accept the digital evolution of news, we need to realise it doesn’t come with the same principles of fact checking and independence that we grew up with. That’s a dangerous thought for a generation about to grow up in a digitalonly news world, relying on social media, celebrities and citizen journalists to inform them. Where is the outrage? Women should be appalled by ‘The Bachelor’, but for some reason the show continues to rate well for the struggling Channel Ten and is showing no sign of losing its mostly female audience. But why? Here’s a show that puts a group of women at the mercy of one man, pits them against each other in a bitchy environment and invites its audience to sit back and put the sisterhood to one side for a couple of hours a week. The lack of diversity, that’s another issue altogether, but despite initial howls of protest, it doesn’t appear anybody is turning off. This is demeaning television that treats women as objects, yet it creates barely a ripple that some of the confected outrage does when it comes to equality. I really don’t get it. (But for the record, I’m in the office sweep so here’s hoping Elora, Leah or Akoulina survive the Barbie Battle of 2017 – there’s a free lunch at stake).

Locals celebrate Breastfeeding Week Mums and bubs from the Blue Mountains come together to mark World Breastfeeding Week milestone ERIN MAMO

o celebrate the 25th year of World Breastfeeding Week, mums and bubs from the Blue Mountains and Penrith got together last week for a breastfeeding meet-up. Held at Nepean Hospital, the event encouraged new mums from the region to come together – whether they breastfeed or not – for a catch-up. Clinical Midwifery Consultant, Jeni Stevens, said apart from a social catch-up the meet-up was established to give local mums the opportunity to learn about the support they have when making infant feeding choices. “We want to promote breastfeeding and make it the norm in our area because we know about the massive benefits it offers,” she said. “But, at the same time, we also want to give new mums all the information that they need to help them decide what is best for them.” Leura mum and breastfeeding advocate, Katey Weekes, said she was made to feel like a rock star by the midwives at both Nepean and Katoomba hospital when she

had her daughters. Ms Weekes gave birth to twin daughters just over 12 months ago and had a few hiccups during the end of her pregnancy as well as her children’s first few days of life. “My girls were premature, so they had trouble latching on to feed and I ended up having to pump around two litres of milk a day for them,” she said. “I think when it comes to breastfeeding the best piece of advice I could give is don’t be afraid to ask for help. “There are so many resources through the hospitals and within the community that can help.” Ms Weekes said she is happy she was able to produce milk and go on to breastfeed because she really believes breastfeeding has multiple benefits. “Not only that it creates an amazing bond between a mother and her children,” she said. For mothers in the Blue Mountains area, both Springwood and Katoomba Community Health Centres offer a breastfeeding clinic. The Australian Breastfeeding Association also provides support online and has a helpline that is open seven days a week. Visit www.breastfeeding.asn.au.

Doyle pushes for locally built trains State MP Trish Doyle attracts plenty of support from Labor colleagues to have trains built in NSW ERIN MAMO

tate Member for the Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, has taken her campaign for NSW trains to be built locally to the next level at the recent NSW Labor Conference. Held last weekend, Ms Doyle spoke at the state conference, securing support from delegates for her campaign to commit a future Labor Government to building new trains in New South Wales. “In the Labor Party, we know that New South Wales train manufacturing workers have the skills, the know-how and the experience to produce high quality trains that are fit-for-purpose, which fit the tracks, and which provide value-formoney for NSW taxpayers,” Ms Doyle said. “We have learned from the disastrous mistakes of the NSW Liberal Government and we call upon a future Labor Government to ensure the long-term future of local rail manufacturing in NSW.” Ms Doyle has been waging a high-profile campaign against the NSW Liberal Government’s decision to issue a contract for the New Intercity Fleet to a company in South Korea. “The new trains are being built to a

design which is currently incompatible with tracks tunnels and platforms on the Blue Mountains line west of Springwood,” she said. At the conference, the State Member with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, put forward a motion to amend the Labor Party’s stance, calling for all future train replacement programmes, including the remainder of the Intercity V-Set replacement programme to be built locally. Ms Doyle also spoke in support of a new Labor Party commitment to enshrine 10 Days Domestic Violence Leave in the National Employment Standards and relevant state legislation. “We can’t rely on good employers to provide domestic violence leave and care for their workers who are confronted with an unsafe situation,” she said. “We can’t and we shouldn’t rely on benevolence.” The Domestic Violence Leave motion, brought to the conference by the Australian Services Union, was adopted as Labor policy with unanimous support from all delegates. Katoomba: Locals busted with cannabis in CBD drug raids On Saturday, July 29, police from the Blue Mountains with the Public Order Riot Squad and a Drug Detection Dog conducted a Drug Detection Operation in the CBDs of Katoomba and Springwood. During the operation at Springwood, a 28-year-old male from Penrith was detected in a licensed premise in possession of 43 tablets of what is believed to be Methamphetamine and a small amount of cash. He was arrested and taken to Springwood Police Station and later charged with ‘supply prohibited drug’, ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘goods in custody’. He has been bailed conditionally to appear before Penrith Local Court on August 17. A number of other individuals were detected carrying cannabis during the operation including: A 47-year-old female from St Peters and a 22-year-old female from Leppington on Parke Street, Katoomba. A 27-year-old female from Wentworth Falls and a 22-year-old female from Blackheath at Katoomba Railway Station A 43-year-old male from Bossley Park in Bathurst Street, Katoomba A 22-year-old male from Springwood in a licensed premise at Springwood. Each individual was issued with a Cannabis Caution.

Springwood: Teens caught after breaking into school About 12.20am on Sunday, July 30, police responded to multiple alarm activations at Springwood High School. On arrival police saw three young people exiting a classroom window. A foot pursuit occurred and all three were arrested a short distance away from the school. The individuals were identified as a 16-year-old male from Woodford, a 16-year-old male from Faulconbridge and a 15-year-old male from Hazelbrook. On searching the young person from Woodford, a small amount of cannabis was located. A search of the school located an open window, disturbed classrooms and a number of small items missing which included double-sided tape, a USB stick and batteries that were located during the search of the individuals. The young persons were taken to Springwood Police Station and interviewed in the presence of their guardians. They will all be dealt with under the Young Offender’s Act and are to be issued with a formal caution at a later date.

ocal group the Western Sydney Fair Trade Network are putting on a market in Glenbrook this weekend where they will sell ethical products and advocate about fair trade. Spokesperson for the group, Shirley Symons, said she and four other local traders started the network because they felt like the issue of fair trading needed to be addressed locally. “We want to promote and educate people in the Blue Mountains and surrounding areas,” she said. “In terms of fair trade, if someone buys something over here and they feel like they got a good deal on the price, someone in another country probably hasn’t gotten a good deal. “So we really want to encourage and show people just how simple it is to find and buy fair trade products for your everyday life.” At this weekend’s market, Ms Symons said the local businesses will be selling a range of products from children’s toys to homewares and food items. In relation to finding out more about fair trade, Ms Symons said each business

to trading fairly to ensure that artisans and producers in Africa, Asia and South America can achieve freedom and our market is aiming to give people the chance to shop fairly right in the Blue Mountains community.” There will also be live music, kids entertainment and free tea and coffee tasting at the event. Premature deaths from colorectal cancer in the Blue Mountains reached 40, dwarfing that of Willoughby’s 16. Lung cancer was no different, as numbers in the Mountains hit 70 compared to just 41 in Willoughby. While deaths from diabetes was relatively similar with 14 and 13 in the Blue Mountains and Willoughby respectively, the same cannot be said about the overall health of locals. An estimate of people considered to be obese in the Mountains reached 16,678, or over 20 per cent of residents – double that of Willoughby on 8,261. Health issues that can be exasperated by lifestyle risk factors, such as circulatory diseases, respiratory system diseases and ischaemic heart disease alarmingly, yet unsurprisingly, held premature morality rates in the Mountains almost triple that in Willoughby. “While you think of the Blue Mountains as a place with lots of outdoor activity, the reality for a lot of residents is early starts and late returns as part of a long commute, so exercise is what gets sacrificed,” Ms Templeman said. “And the fact that we are right on the fringe of the city, but not far enough west to be rural, means that we sometimes fall between the cracks in the way services are provided. “It really highlights the need for continually improving local health services.”

The 41st Springwood Art Show, which will be held at Springwood High School, will this year display works from photographers, sculptors, wood turners, craftspeople and high school students from Friday, August 25 to Sunday, August 27. Co-ordinated by the Parents & Citizens Association (P&C), the event directly supports students of Springwood High with 25 per cent of all sales used to buy educational resources. P&C President, Julia Thurling, said everything the committee does is for the benefit and wellbeing of students at the school. “Funds raised from admissions, the café, the raffle and artwork will help to buy resources, which support students of the school,” she said. “On top of supporting the students, the show is also a long recognised event for the wider community to enjoy and fits nicely with the community’s interest in

Ms Gasser’s work hangs in both local and international venues, including the Council Chambers of Sanda in Japan, where a piece was gifted to the Mayor from Blue Mountains City Council. Not to be forgotten, Springwood High Principal Dr Mark Howie urged visitors to pay special attention to the student artworks this year. “Last year, an art collector from Sydney bought three works done by one of our students,” he said. Fairness for the Greater West learnt that we belong on the wrong side of a line. This line – dubbed the “latte line” – cleaves across Sydney, from Tempe at an angle up through the North West to Rouse Hill. If you are north of the line, you are basically one of the haves. You have better performing schools, you have better access to jobs and to better paid jobs. The latest social health data also shows inequality – roughly double the number of lung cancer deaths in my electorate to comparable areas on the other side of the city; double the number of circulatory disease and three times the respiratory disease If we want Greater Western Sydney to be fairly treated and have a chance at being equal, we’d do well to make sure we don’t create a new inequality, with a line defining those who have protections from the first Sydney Airport and those who have no protections at all from a second Sydney airport. One with a curfew, flight caps and flight sharing, and the second without any of those protections. In the name of fairness, we can’t settle for anything other than the best protections for people and the environment and protections equal to those East already have.

The issue of economic inequality is finally on the agenda and this is an excerpt of a speech I gave at our recent ALP State Conference: When I look at the people most affected by the growing economic inequality, it is not just my generation that I worry about, although there is no doubt that there are many who are struggling, from pensioners, people with ill health, people who are unemployed, people on pay that barely gets them through because they’ve had no wage rise in years, small self-employed people scraping to stay ahead, and working women with low super levels are facing an economic cliff as they head to retirement. But it is also my children’s generation and the ones following them who face a hard road towards financial security. They are the ones who carry high debt from TAFE and uni, they have to be grateful for unpaid work experience as they try and get a job that is now less likely to be full time and long term than it ever was, they have an impossible challenge of paying high rents to the baby boomer property owners at the same time as saving for a house where prices seem to know no bounds. Bag ban taking too long After reading your article regarding plastic bags being discontinued at Woolworths and Coles, I thought how great it will be to reduce the amount of plastic bags going into landfill from these two Companies, but why would it take 12 months? People often only see homelessness as those sleeping and begging on the streets, but we need to ensure that our invisible homeless people are taken care of. Homelessness is all around us. People who are forced to couch surf, sleep in cars or those who just don’t have a home to return to every night are the invisible homeless. aving passion for an idea and then birthing it into a profitable business is an awesome venture to undertake. But there are some business owners who seem to have missed some vital steps, and then wonder why nobody is buying their product or service. Research is the first vital step. This includes market research to ascertain whether people actually want or need your product, and whether they are willing to part with their money to obtain it. You and a few friends might think your product is great. But if there is no market for it, you won’t turn a profit. Research into the specifics of your product or service is also necessary to ensure that you have investigated all the risks, pitfalls, potential problems and existing competition. Assuming you have undertaken as much research as possible, and your sales are still stagnant, you may need to look at whether you are clearly conveying the value of your product or service. You might have something that you are absolutely certain people need, but if

your target market doesn’t understand what you’re selling or why they should buy from you, they won’t commit to a purchase. Another factor to consider is whether people are ready to buy from you. This doesn’t mean they never will. But it does mean you need to factor in various stages to the buying process. Yes, I know this is not what new businesses want to hear when they need to start turning a profit! But it is important to acknowledge that your customers are likely to need multiple opportunities to opt-in when they are ready. Which also means implementing strategies to keep people engaged and connected. This could include things such as subscribing to an e-newsletter, interacting with a Facebook page or seeing your business name/brand consistently via sponsorship, advertisements or other promotional avenues. If you have done all the above, made any necessary changes and still aren’t getting results, you may need to come to a tough conclusion: perhaps nobody wants what you are selling?

You may say to your partner, “I’m so excited, I got my first five star review today!” Don’t be alarmed if they’re less than impressed. Your friends and family if they haven’t been in your shoes, are unlikely to be your best business sounding boards. Networks Reaching out to your business networks, or establishing new ones is therefore vital to do early on in your business. The networks provide contacts, learnings, sharing and empathy to you and your business. The connections you make in these networks can prove invaluable to the success of your business. have an ‘interdependency relationship’, all fall under the financial dependency definition and will qualify as tax-free recipients. The problem occurs the minute your children turn 18. From then on, they are not considered financial dependants and any super benefit you may leave would be ‘slugged’ at 17 per cent tax rate. That’s $17,000 for

every $100,000 bequeathed to them. Yes, there are some exceptions, disabled children, and children under 25 classified as being a financial dependant. The most common strategy employed to extinguish the tax liability is called a ‘withdrawal and re-contribution”. This involves withdrawing your superannuation usually after age 60 when it becomes tax-free, and immediately depositing it back into your super fund. This simple transaction has the effect of changing the ‘nature’ of your funds from being tax obligated to totally tax-free on death. Bingo, tax problem solved. Now before you rush to organise the withdrawal of your super, there are a few complexities that need consideration. For instance there are limits to the amounts a person can contribute to super which will apply to any re-contribution amount. Additionally, you also need to be within the contribution age limits. Professional financial advice is an absolute must; otherwise you could end up shooting yourself in the foot. For those who fall outside of any limits there are other strategies you could adopt, and these should also be discussed with a professional.

Charlize Theron kicks proverbial ass in the latest spy blockbuster ‘Atomic Blonde’. Set in the late 80s, the film follows the story of Agent Lorraine Broughton, MI6’s most lethal assassin. Using equal parts savagery, spycraft and sensuality, Lorraine is sent on a mission to Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier from the destabilised city. There she meets up with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through a deadly game of spies. The film’s director, David Leitch, had a hand in directing scenes from the action blockbuster ‘John Wick’ and has worked

as a stunt double for Brad Pitt. Leitch was the perfect match for Theron, who did much of her own stunt work on the film, including a series of intense fight scenes. ‘Atomic Blonde’ is getting mostly positive reviews with movie review site Rotten Tomatoes praising the film for its stylish action sequences and Charlize’s performance. However, there has been some mention that the film’s narrative isn’t quite as hard-hitting as the film’s star. ‘Atomic Blonde’ is currently screening at United Cinemas in Katoomba. I have a confession to make – I really struggle when it comes to breakfast. Yes, I know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and as a nutritionist I definitely believe in a healthy morning meal. But I’m also not a morning person, and eating is the last thing I’m thinking about when I roll out of bed after hitting the snooze button an unreasonable number of times. That being said I still manage to fit a nutritious morning meal into my routine, so this week I thought I’d share some tips that I’ve found useful. Think portable Most days my breakfast consists of some combination of fruit, nuts/seeds and a muesli bar (not all bars are created equal, so keep an eye on those nutrition panels). Find portable options that you can keep in your bag/car, or that are easy to grab on your way out the door of a morning. This way you’ll have food on hand wherever you are. Plan ahead Start to get into the routine of planning your breakfast while doing dinner. Killing two birds with one stone is the

Find what works for you If you don’t feel particularly hungry in the morning, or have just never been able to stomach food before 9am, then go with what works best for you. This may mean having a smaller breakfast and a nutritious snack later in the morning, or pushing breakfast back to a later time. he Rutherglen district of north-eastern Victoria seems to be going through a bit of an identity crisis. Its most highly regarded wines — richly flavoured fortifieds — are on a downward slide in the marketplace, though the top examples of mature muscats and tokays fetch the seemingly astronomical process they deserve. The area has tried, with mixed success, to match it with cooler area in producing dry white tablewines. A recent tasting of a range of wines from one of its oldest producers, Jones Winery & Vineyard, showed that Rutherglen’s real future may lie in another blast from its past — big, gutsy dry reds. WINE REVIEWS Jones Winery & Vineyard 2013 Shiraz ($32): Rutherglen prides itself on making ‘wines fit for heroes’. As a devout observer of drinking habits in restaurants over the past few years, especially the tendency for the big, bold reds to mainly appear on tables occupied by women, so I hope that in these more politically correct times the term includes what we used to describe as ‘heroines’. This is definitely a big, robust red that will certainly do extreme justice to a rare char-grilled steak. The juices in the steak will combine with the wine’s tannins and render a very satisfying combination. Take care with it, though. It carries a hefty 14.5 per cent alcohol as well as a significant flavour punch. Visit www.joneswinery.com.au. WINE OF THE WEEK Margan 2017 Albarino ($30): This Hunter Valley dry white shows the variety’s renowned apricot character but I also pick up a blast of Asian spices, including what I interpret as a good dose of ginger. I’d love to try the wine with some spicy Vietnamese or Thai cuisine.

The St Columba’s student has been playing futsal since signing up with a local Blaxland team a number of years ago. “I developed a passion for the game about three years ago when I signed up with some friends to the local competition and decided to keep playing,” Gabriel said. “I love the opportunities that futsal presents to people willing to put in the work.” After playing locally for a short time, the 15-year-old joined a representative team and was announced as captain soon after. Currently playing for the Western Wolves, Gabriel was selected to represent Australia after competing in the State Titles. Now he will head to South America to play in the Liga BH Futsal competition in Belo Horizonte, competing against players from around the world. “I’m very appreciative and excited to travel to Brazil,” Gabriel said. “I will be playing around 20 games and I’m also planning on visiting some famous sights.” Linden teen and Aussie futsal star Gabriel Esquivel will play in Brazil.
