The NSW Government has launched the Women’s Online Network (WON), Australia’s first online platform created by female industry leaders to champion and support women entrepreneurs through their business journey. NSW Minister for Small Business, John Barilaro was joined by Minister for Women, Pru Goward to announce the network and said the NSW Government has been key in driving the online resource through the Women in Entrepreneurship initiative. “WON is a one-stop-shop connecting aspiring and existing entrepreneurs with the resources, knowledge and people that can help them create and grow their business to new levels,” Mr Barilaro said. t takes a fair amount of skill to play an instrument. It takes even more to play over 20. Blue Mountains residents and multiinstrumentalists Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth will be doing just that when they bring their show ‘Tubular Bells for Two’ to Springwood this month.
I
Together these two musicians will take on the mammoth task of performing Mike Oldfield’s 1973 album ‘Tubular Bells’ live on stage in this intricately choreographed piece that’s delighted critics around the world. While Oldfield played almost all of the instruments on the album himself and then layered the recordings, ‘Tubular Bells for Two’ will see Aidan and Daniel perform every part of the album them-
selves. With a frantic rush between instruments, and the risk of even a small mistake throwing the whole concert off, this is sure to be a unique and enthralling musical performance. ‘Tubular Bells for Two’ will be on at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub in Springwood on Friday, August 12 at 8pm. Tickets are $38-$40. For more information, visit www.bluemountainstheatreandhub.com.au or call 4723 5050.
A man has been charged following a confrontation at Glenbrook. Police have been told two men, aged 43 and 41, began arguing over the older man’s dog about 11.45am in the Glenbrook National Park on Tuesday, August 2. Police will allege the older man then allegedly threatened the other man with an axe and threw the axe, narrowly missing him. The younger man left the scene and alerted police from Blue Mountains Local Area Command, who arrested the man nearby a short time later. He was taken to Springwood Police Station where he was charged with a number of offences.

Give loving mum a chance The armchair commentators have been out in force over the last week, angry that a 63-year-old woman has given birth to a baby via IVF in Melbourne. With screams that she’s too old and that IVF treatment for the woman was irresponsible and selfish, it seems most are angry at the 63-year-old and her 78-year-old partner. Personally, I don’t have a huge issue with it. I understand the arguments – the parents will most likely pass away while the child is young, while both the mother and father will potentially get ill and frail during the child’s key development years. But is it really up to us to decide what’s acceptable and what’s not when it comes to something like this? While it’s certainly rare and out of the ordinary for somebody in their 60s to give birth, it seems the child has entered this world into a loving family. We have no idea if the family has put arrangements in place in regards to the child’s care and financial needs should something happen to them, but we can safely presume they have. So many children enter this world each day into deadbeat families, or to parents who are not capable of bringing up children properly. Stories of abuse and neglect are rampant and all too common. None of us know what life is going to deliver tomorrow or the next day. So-called ‘normal’ families could become anything but in a split second. As long as the child is loved, I think the new mother deserves a break.

Nathan Pentecost’s push-a-thon Late last month I lugged myself around the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith in a wheelchair to help raise awareness for Wheelchair Rugby League and Men of League. While my arms certainly felt it after the 5km lap (which I admit, I shared with Michael Todd from the Western Sydney Business Centre and One Point Health), it was nothing compared to Nathan who managed to complete 100km around the Olympic venue. Nathan is a passionate wheelchair athlete who is so dedicated to ensuring that disability means very little when it comes to taking part in sport. He’s still looking for more funds to help purchase more wheelchairs for the rugby league team. Please contact us here at the paper if you’d like to help out.

Hayne made right call I’m stunned by Parramatta Eels fans who can’t understand why Jarryd Hayne has gone back on his commitment to play for their club if he one day returned to rugby league. Hayne last week signed a lucrative deal with the Gold Coast Titans after chasing his NRL and Rugby Sevens dreams overseas. Since Hayne departed, the Eels have become a basket case. They’ve rorted the salary cap, been stripped of competition points and the Auckland Nines title, and lurched from one scandal to another. If I worked for a business but left to pursue an opportunity overseas, promising to one day return, I certainly wouldn’t be walking back in the front door if that business had erupted in scandal and crisis since I’d left. Eels fans need to blame their own club
and its former Board, not Hayne, for how this has all unfolded. I’m excited that Hayne is back in rugby league, though I do have several question marks over the rule that allows him to return to the game so late in the 2016 season, giving the Titans a huge boost in their mission to make the top eight and have a shot at their first premiership. Rugby league needs genuine stars like Hayne, particularly on the Gold Coast, an area that has been dealt its fair share of sporting blows over the years. Eels fans can feel rightly gutted about seeing their former Dally M winner stride out in a Titans jersey, but their blame and anger is pointed in the wrong direction. Hopefully this saga helps in pushing forward Parramatta’s mission to re-build into a strong force.

Rate cut set to ignite spring market • Official rate at record low • Agents expecting activity • Banks hold back cut TROY DODDS
oney-hungry banks are withholding the Reserve Bank’s full interest rate cut from customers but real estate agents are still expecting a strong spring selling season. The RBA cut the official cash rate to a record low 1.50 per cent last Tuesday, but most banks have only passed on a portion of the rate cut to customers. Graham Cooke, Insights Manager at finder.com.au, said that a lower cash rate will make the cost of borrowing cheaper, but borrowers need to be proactive and seek out money-saving opportunities. “A low interest rate landscape is attractive for home loan customers as variable repayments become more affordable, but don’t pay the lazy tax by being complacent. Pick up the phone and contact your lender to see whether it’s passing on the rate cut – and when,” he said. A Blue Mountains resident with an average $300,000 mortgage would pocket almost $50 per month, or a whopping $16,325 over the life of their loan, if their lender passed the rate cut on in full. Cameron Faico, a real estate agent with Property Central, said he expects the rate cut will spur home buyers and sellers into action.
M
Property Central’s Cameron Faico “A rate reduction is great news for potential buyers in our area, particularly those who are looking to purchase for the first time,” he said.
WW23551
“Anyone who is thinking of buying can now act with certainty as we move into the spring market.” He said confidence is set to return to the market in the coming months. “Prices have remained steady throughout 2016, mainly due to an under supply of available properties,” Mr Faico said. “With interest rates being reduced I think this will also give potential sellers plenty of confidence to put their place on the market with the knowledge that there will be an even stronger pool of buyers looking to secure a home as we come into the warmer months.” LJ Hooker CEO Grant Harrod agreed with Mr Faico, saying the property market is set to rise again. “We’re now a month away from the peak selling season and the RBA’s move will motivate buyers even further,” he said. “Most pundits thought Sydney and Melbourne’s price growth would slow over the year – especially over winter. But very few anticipated the levels of new stock would be so low. There’s plenty of room in the market for sellers wanting to list now; more listings will actually bring greater levels of sustainability to the market.” The RBA meets again next month and is expected to keep rates on hold.
Man burned lover’s clothes A scorned lover has been ordered to pay compensation after burning his estranged partner’s clothes. William Denis Cross fronted Penrith Local Court last Tuesday charged with damaging property. “I just lost my cool,” Mr Cross said when asked to explain his actions. “I overacted pretty massively.” The court heard the Blue Mountains resident set fire to a vest, dress and a pair of underwear in what Magistrate Roger Clisdell accepted was a “childish overreaction” to the breakdown of the relationship. Magistrate Clisdell told the defendant he would adjourn the matter for 28 days to see if he paid his ex the $200. He warned he would create more pain for his pocket and record a criminal conviction if he failed to follow through with his part of the deal. “Is that enough incentive?” Magistrate Clisdell asked. “She’ll definitely be reimbursed, your Honour,” Mr Cross said. He is due back in court on August 30. - Alena Higgins

Putting an end to our national shame Unique project aims to eradicate homelessness by taking a fresh approach to a massive problem ERIN MAMO
new project has been launched in our local community with the aim of ending homelessness for good. The ‘Heading Home – Ending Homelessness’ project was officially launched last Friday in Katoomba and is an innovative concept that focuses on eradicating homelessness in the Blue Mountains, Penrith and the Hawkesbury. Three major specialist homelessness service providers are spearheading the project, Wentworth Community Housing as project sponsor, Platform Youth Services and Mission Australia (Nepean). According to Wentworth CEO Stephen McIntyre, the project aims to mobilise the community and to reach out and connect with people experiencing homelessness. “We’ll use an evidence-based screening tool to understand the level and complexity of need, prioritise those most at risk, and work together to find solutions,” Mr McIntyre said. The three services will find housing solutions for people who are experiencing homelessness and will look to ensure there are enough supports for the new tenant to help them keep their home.

The project will be aimed at helping the most vulnerable homeless people including families, single adults, couples and young people. The first stage will be to contact people experiencing primary and secondary homelessness through a Registry Week. An evidence based tool will be used to assess and prioritise people currently experiencing homelessness and then a community briefing will be held at the end of Registry Week to report to the community on the state of homelessness in the local areas. The second stage will be to help people through a Housing First approach that provides housing and wraps support and services around each person. This project is at a scale not previously seen in the district. Mercy Foundation CEO Felicity Reynolds applauded the approach and said homelessness was as much an economic as a social issue. “Studies show it can cost more to service homeless people than to end homelessness with housing and support,” Ms Reynolds said. “We want to support projects that end homelessness, so we are very pleased to get behind this collaborative campaign.”

Community
More community heroes needed Information night to be held on August 17 with SES hoping to recruit new volunteers DALE DRINKWATER
ust over 100 NSW State Emergency Service volunteers are currently responsible to respond to almost 80,000 Blue Mountains locals residents in an emergency. These few volunteers have an enormous but rewarding job, assisting locals across 26 communities keeping them safe in the event of a storm, flood, or assisting in other emergencies such as police searches or devastating fires. However, Blue Mountains Local Controller, John Hughes, needs more local heroes at the centrally-based Katoomba SES for a range of roles including both rescue and operations support. “Many people see our members out in the field doing the hard physical work, but we also need people that would enjoy working with communications and computer systems to help coordinate our teams,” he said. “The roles in our Operations Centre suit many people, either young or old and it is ideal for semi-retired or retired members of our community.” Of 230 SES units across the state, the Blue Mountains is one of the largest and
J
busiest, that covers 1433 square kilometres along the Great Dividing Range, and the World Heritage listed Greater Blue Mountains National Park. Those unique qualities, such as terrain and climate, create a number of difficulties in providing an emergency response service for residents. Rest assured, volunteers receive nationally recognised training in all aspects of emergency management, plus learn first aid, chainsaw operations and flood and vertical rescue techniques. The SES is a registered training organisation, does not charge volunteers for training, and provides all safety equipment and uniforms. “Over the years, many of our members have successfully taken their skills taught by the SES to develop their working career,” Mr Hughes said. If any member of the public over 16-yearsold would like to join the NSW SES with the Blue Mountains unit, there will be an information night on Wednesday, August 17 at the SES Katoomba Headquarters, 3 Valley Road, Katoomba. For more information, contact 132 500, email blu.ops@ses.nsw.gov.au, or visit the Katoomba headquarters between 7.30pm and 9.30pm on Wednesday nights.

Reid FOOD
They may not have a particularly appealing image but vegetables are the quiet achievers of the food world. Adding to the list of reasons to pack your diet full of nutrient rich fresh produce is the results of a new study which found that a natural chemical in plants may help to halve the risk of insulin resistance in adults. In the study, which followed 938 women and men, it was found that those who consume more phytochemicals, known as carotenoids, had a 49-58 per cent lower risk of insulin resistance.
Quick-fix diets aren’t the answer Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6
Keeping insulin on track helps to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, which is currently Australia’s fastestgrowing chronic disease. These types of studies often inspire people to make changes to their diet. Which is great, but unfortunately the first thing we tend to turn to is a boring, restrictive diet where we give
up all our favourite foods and spend days, weeks or months focused on nothing but eating ‘perfectly’. It’s a pretty sad scenario, and research backs up this negative view of dieting with the majority of people who diet either regaining the weight or ending up heavier than when they began. Instead of focusing on what we feel we ‘should’ cut out of our diets it makes more sense to focus on what nutritious foods we could be eating more of, like the humble vegetable. Because they are less calorie dense and more nutrient rich, vegetables help to keep you feeling fuller for longer, avoiding the deprived feeling that comes with diets. The best way to start is with small, easy changes. For example, when you order a sandwich or a burger at lunch ask for extra salad or vegetables. When making pasta add lentils, beans or chickpeas; or if you love smoothies add some green leafy veggies alongside fruit. Flipping your view of healthy eating to what you can have is much more likely to lead to long term sustainable change. Quick-fix diets simply aren’t the answer. Happy eating!

own banking. Oh, and not to mention book store browsing (one of life’s great pastimes) – it has almost disappeared with the introduction of kindle et al. In fact today, I actually ‘chatted’ with a computer at a large energy provider, who helped me with a number of queries – it seems that we are heading to a completely self service society all in the name of innovation. And now we have those zany, lovable larrikins at our large institutions deciding the world is in need of self service financial planning. My goodness, going by their past misdemeanours in this area; do we really want a computerised version of the same? Well I for one, am certainly sceptical about the ability of a ‘robo’ adviser to provide anything but, compartmentalised, ‘tick box’ advice solutions that could be easily achieved by an even slightly financially knowledgeable client. So think carefully if you are offered a simpler and cheaper alternative for your financial advice. It may appear easier and probably more convenient, but remember you will be the one doing it all and guess what; you’re still going to be paying for it.

Over the last few years the financial advice industry has seen the introduction of what is colloquially termed ‘robo’ advice. That is, financial advice created by a computer. The premise of this type of advice is that clients will consult with a version of ‘mechanical intelligence’ to garner a specific financial strategy, suitable to their current situation. No doubt the ‘robo’ adviser will also execute its recommendations and deliver the appropriate fee, all while you wait.

A you being productive Are or are you just ‘busy’?

eing ‘busy’ does not always equate to being ‘productive’. Many business owners find themselves working long hours but feel like they are treading water when it comes to moving forward in their business or increasing profit margins. Perhaps the answer in many cases is to ‘work smarter not harder’. A great deal of productivity stems from uncluttering your mind. If you are thinking of too many tasks at one time, you are likely to feel stressed and constantly busy. But there are some simple strategies which can help you be more productive: • Prepare for the next day: write down what you plan to do tomorrow, what you need to achieve, and even what you need to wear or take to the workplace. This clears your head before you sleep, giving your mind and body a better rest. • Exercise: we all know regular exercise is good for your physical health, but it also gives you a clearer mind. Morning exercise can get you ready for the day, and later in
the day exercise can help you to unwind. • Take time out: when you are a busy business owner, it can be easy to make business your whole focus. Spend time on the little, important things, like playing with your kids before bedtime or catching up with a friend for coffee. Some people find that taking regular breaks throughout the day (for example, work for 30 minutes, break for five mins) also creates more focus and less strain on your brain (and body). • Get up early: while this doesn’t suit everyone, there are many proponents of early rising (and going to bed well before midnight). People who do this tend to have more time to think strategically with minimal distractions and can get more accomplished in those two quiet hours when they are refreshed, than any other time in the day. • Be tough when you prioritise: ensure that you are prioritising what ‘needs’ to be done, not just what you ‘like’ to do.
S
ome small businesses are not bookkeeping savvy. For those who are, you might wish to skip down to the third paragraph and start reading from there. For those who aren’t, here’s a quick set up guide to getting your documents ready for tax, beyond putting your receipts in a box and giving them to an accountant. If you’re doing that, then you’re paying a lot for a service that can be done cheaper, maybe for nothing, if you know what you’re doing. The first thing you want to know is that the receipts you gather reflect the financial records of your business, and it is the basis on which tax is calculated. You could simply put your receipts in a box, but before you do, consider entering them onto a simple excel spreadsheet where you can separate your receipts into columns to create categories for your transactions. If you’re not computer savvy, then buy a cashbook from a stationery supplier and use that. In a cashbook or a spreadsheet, the rows represent the transaction,
Free 2-Hour Event “HOW A BOILER MAKER FROM BLACKTOWN BOUGHT OVER 30 MILLION IN PROPERTY, AND BECAME FINANCIALLY FREE IN UNDER 10 YEARS”
and the columns; the category. The categories should reflect those parts of the business you want to know about, including purchases, utilities, wages and so on. You might want to consider the following categories – Motor Vehicle, Travel Expenses, Wages Expenses, Office Expenses, Purchases (if you buy inventory) and Depreciation. Theoretically, you should be spending 1/5 of your working week working on the business and part of that should include bookkeeping. If you don’t have the time to do this, then consider hiring a bookkeeper. They can transcribe the receipts, cashbook or spreadsheet into an accountant friendly program. Even better, sole traders can use online accounting software that is Standard Business Reporting (SBR) ready. SBR means the software can talk directly to the Australian Tax Office without having to prepare hand written Business or Income Activity Statements, which will make reporting simple. In addition, sole traders can use My.Gov to submit their tax and other business statements.

KEEPING BLUE MOUNTAINS RESIDENTS INFORMED ON WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO
Shadows of his past
T KATE REID
hough country music icon Troy Cassar-Daley has spent decades on stage, guitar in hand, sharing snapshots of his life, the process of delving into his history for the book Things I Carry Around was a foreign and slightly confronting process. “It was almost like stepping through a minefield when I first started to write it, because there’s certain stuff you’ve tucked away that you don’t want to remember,” Troy said. “The first thing my wife said to me when I started writing the notes for the book was ‘just don’t think you’ve got to sugarcoat it to make people think you’re nice or something, because if things
weren’t great when you were a kid, you must talk about it’.” With his parents separating when Troy was young he spent his childhood years between each side of his family; living with his mother in the country town of Grafton and spending holidays with his father in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. “Coming from a little town like Grafton, it was a big world in Sydney,” Troy said. “But then I did yearn to get back to Grafton because I missed my little town and being able to run around barefoot and all that sort of stuff. “It was a tight rope I think for a kid of my age spanning between two different cultures. I had my Aboriginal family up in Grafton and I had my Maltese family in Sydney. “It was like you were almost two people for a while.” As with any artist there’s a certain image people have of Troy Cassar-Daley,
but there are some events in the book that Troy believes his fans might find surprising. “I’ve been writing about my life since the first album and this is my 10th album, so this book’s almost been semi writing itself in song but there’s a lot of things you make up, none of this in the book is made up,” Troy said. “If I smoked drugs when I was young, I smoked drugs when I was young, that’s how it’s got to fall, I can’t really run from it. These are things in your life that people are going to go ‘oh I thought he was a nice guy’, well I am a nice bloke but I had a pretty wild youth. “But I learnt from my lessons as a young bloke and I learned when I got to the cross roads to pull up and use my brain.” It was a host of important people in his life, who Troy describes as his ‘champions’, that helped the little boy from Grafton decide which path he wanted to take in life.

SMITH’S PRODUCE
The release of Things I Carry Around will be accompanied by a new album of the same name. It’s a deeply personal release and, as with everything in his career, Troy has put his heart and soul into it. “I’ve seen a lot of people put out albums with books and normally it’s just a bunch of b-sides that weren’t good enough to be on a record, but I wanted this to have the same power of the book, story-wise,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure they were both as strong as they could be and I’m really proud of the way that it comes together as a unit.” Troy Cassar-Daley will be performing an intimate acoustic show at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, September 2 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $99 and include dinner, drink on arrival, show and autobiography or album. To purchase tickets to the event, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

Aiding her in the protection of her new land is Freya’s ability to freeze her enemies, and an army of huntsmen she herself has raised. It’s been years of waiting for fans but the time has finally come for one of the most anticipated (anti)hero films to hit cinemas. Since it was announced in 2014 ‘Suicide Squad’ has had fans of the DC Comics team buzzing with plot and cast rumours

including the much talked about casting of Jared Leto as The Joker, a role last played by the late Heath Ledger. In the film Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) leads a secret government agency known as A.R.G.U.S that’s given the task of saving the world, but there’s a catch; instead of the usual heroes the Suicide Squad is made up of some of the biggest, baddest supervillains, let out of incarceration to take on dangerous black ops missions in exchange for their freedom. The cast includes Aussies Margot
Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, along with Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Will Smith as Deadshot and Jared Leto as The Joker. It’s yet to be seen if ‘Suicide Squad’ can live up to the hype but there’s no doubt fans will be out in force this weekend to get their first taste of the film, with huge ticket sales expected. ‘Suicide Squad’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. HOUSE HUSBANDS COMING SOON CHANNEL NINE
Ê Channel Ten have quietly renewed one of my favourite shows, ‘Shark Tank’, with auditions underway for a third season in 2017. If you have a great business idea, apply by visiting go.mycastingnet. com/Apply/Show/SharkTankSeries3. Ê Good news for fans of ‘I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here’ with Channel Ten confirming the hit reality show will be back in 2017. It will once again be hosted by Julia Morris and Dr Chris Brown. Ê Channel Nine have confirmed the new season of ‘The Block’ will premiere at 7.30pm on Monday, August 22. The latest series sees couples renovate the derelict headquarters of an historic Australian soap and candle factory. Ê
Matthew Le Nevez will be making a surprise return to ‘Offspring’ when the Channel Ten drama returns from its Olympic break. Le Nevez’s character Patrick was killed off by the show in season four, and will return via a fantasy scene.
Ê Channel Nine’s Summer of Cricket will begin on November 3 when Australia meets South Africa in a Test match over in Perth. Ê ABC’s popular app iView is now live streaming ABC2, ABC3 and ABC KIDS,
alongside ABC and ABC News 24. The move comes after each of the major networks announced live streaming on their respective apps earlier this year.
Ê Foxtel have confirmed the cast of ‘The Real Housewives of Sydney’, which includes former soapie star Melissa Tkautz and former TV presenter Lisa Oldfield. The rest of the cast isn’t overly known in mainstream circles but no doubt that will change when the show premieres on Arena next year. Ê
Foxtel satellite customers may have
noticed recently that 7Two is no longer available, instead channel 188 has been replaced with 7Mate. The move, which I think is for the best, is believed to have been made by Seven.
Ê Finally, great news for fans of ‘Gilmore Girls’ with Netflix announcing an airdate for its upcoming four telemovies. ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ will premiere globally on November 25. Each telemovie will run for 90 minutes, spanning each of the four seasons – winter, spring, summer and autumn. The teaser trailer is now online.

LIFE & STYLE RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
LEO
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Creative projects are favoured this week, as you express yourself in a variety of exciting and colourful ways. You prefer a spontaneous approach but you’ll find some sort of daily routine will help you power through projects in a more productive and pleasant way. On the weekend your need for speed is severely curtailed, and everything seems to move at a snail’s pace. Your limited patience will also wear thin with pedantic people and frustrating family members.
Joanne Madeline

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
The Sun is currently spending its annual month travelling through your sign. So it’s time to tap into the very essence of what makes you the fiery, creative, demanding Diva that you are. Don’t let relationship rumbles, work worries or financial fiascos diminish your delightfully flamboyant demeanour. Be inspired by Leo model and actress Cara Delevingne, who was born on August 12, 1992: “Be brave. Believe in yourself. Make yourself proud.” Spoken like a true Lion!
VIRGO
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
This week the focus is on finances and love. When it comes to money matters, avoid putting your head in the sand. Strive to be practical and proactive. A long-term relationship could be put under some sort of stress. Don’t throw in the towel Taurus! If you address problems in a mature and responsible way, then the partnership will move to a deeper and more satisfying level. Single Bulls – a new liaison will go down a rocky road before you can ride off into the romantic sunset.
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Have you got a problem that’s been bothering you? Early week confusion transforms into the ability to view a current situation with crystal-clear insight and discrimination. The deeper you dig, the more understanding you’ll gain. The weekend is the time for domestic improvements as you get your house in order. If you don’t, then expect some critical feedback from family. When it comes to criticism, you’re good at giving it … but not so good at receiving.
GEMINI
LIBRA
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
With Mercury, Venus and Jupiter all in your domestic zone, the focus is on Casa Gemini. Mid-week is the best time to patch up problems with a family member or tidy up and beautify your living or office space. Family and romantic relationships become complicated as the week progresses, when serious responsibilities overtake fun and frivolity. So stop complaining and instead, fulfil commitments in a capable and conscientious way.
CANCER
Strive to get practical results, as you communicate with others in a sensible and no-nonsense way. If you work hard on joint projects then you’ll eventually reap the rewards. But, if you’re relying on others to encourage and support you on the weekend, then you’ll be disappointed. They have their own problems to deal with, so you’ll just have to be a self-sufficient Crab. There is also the potential for a social media spat.
Protect your home! Security Camera Systems Cheapest price guaranteed Servicing available all areas in Sydney, 7 days a week. We come to you.
A family relationship is undergoing profound change. It’s like a snake shedding its skin. Things feel shaky at the moment but hang in there. With the help of powerful Pluto, you’re creating a firm new base for the future. Don’t be too hard on yourself (or others) on the weekend. Striving for perfection will be fraught with frustrations, so learn to appreciate imperfections along the way. Car problems need to be attended to ASAP, so stop procrastinating and get organised!
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Mid-week is wonderful for work and business. Your communication skills and Scorpio powers of persuasion are strong, so use them wisely. All types of networking are favoured, as you form long-lasting connections with like-minded souls. So make sure you capitalise on lucky opportunities that come your way. But stop wasting time worrying about money matters and instead, be much more proactive.
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
The stars send a professional opportunity or business break your way mid-week, but it’s not a free ride. You must be focused enough to recognise it – and disciplined enough to take productive action. On Saturday, Saturn in your sign squares Venus, so romance or socialising will temporarily be put on hold as work interferes with your plans for a fun weekend. Don’t fight it … just roll up your sleeves and get the job done. Preferably with a smile on your Sagittarian dial!
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Calling all Capricorn control-freaks! When it comes to a sensitive problem, resist the urge to barge in and take over. Instead, sit on the sidelines so you can gain a broader perspective and a much deeper understanding. Then you’ll know exactly what to do next. On the weekend Saturn squares Venus, which can make Goats feel quite grumpy. So avoid tricky topics, emotional triggers and pushy people who press your buttons. And do your best to keep your customary cool.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Aquarians are independent individuals. But don’t feel you have to tackle a current project or problem completely on your own. There are plenty of people around you who are happy to help. All you have to do is sum up the courage to ask. On the weekend you’re keen to catch up with family or friends but a meeting could be delayed or cancelled at the last minute. And expect a major goal or dream to be put on hold temporarily. Don’t let that deter you … persistence is the key.

ccording to company history, St Huberts Wines, which was one of the first wineries in the Yarra Valley in 1862, was named after the Patron Saint of the Hunt, a 7th century English nobleman who turned a life of pleasures to one of helping the needy after confronting a magnificent stag between whose antlers hung a hauntingly shiny Cross. And, the company adds, while the winery’s founder was a Mr de Castella whose first name also just happened to be Hubert, he chose to name his winery after the Patron Saint and not simply Hubert after himself. By the late 1800s it had grown to be the largest winery in the Yarra Valley, but after WWI and then the Great Depression it was turned to more-profitable dairying, which continued until the Yarra rose to wine prominence once more in the 1960s, with St Huberts again a pioneer. Today this premium cool-climate maker is hailed worldwide, and a new label it’s just released and appropriately named The Stag, is fast winning praise from all quarters. Try in particular the 2016 The Stag Chardonnay that’s all wonderfully vibrant citrus and pear flavours, lively acidity and with a mouth-pleasing freshness… at just $20 it’s a really great drop to simply enjoy on its own, or to pair-up with salmon fish cakes. One to note: Rosé is a wine we more-usually think of for enjoyment in our warmer months, one to put on the table under a summer’s sun but rosé is equally for enjoying in our colder months as well, and both with main courses and desserts – for mains it’s hard to beat a good one with Thai chicken in a coconut curry sauce. Blossom Hill’s 2015 Rosé (pictured) is just $13.

n-form Penrith Panthers prop Leilani Latu is enjoying one hell of a season, so much so that commentators can’t get enough of him – especially when he plays like a halfback weighing in at 115kg. But despite his strong runs and excellent ball playing skills – which have the likes of Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns salivating – Latu always worries what his toughest critics will think when he arrives back home from a hard day at the office. “I don’t take into account too much of what people are saying about me because I think my hardest critics are my fiancé and my parents,” Latu said. “They are very honest and sometimes I get a bit touchy of what they have to say. “I take in what they say to me, rather than the commentators, and I try and improve each week.” Latu, who made his NRL debut for the Panthers last season, has been so good this year that he’s now a regular fixture in Anthony Griffin’s starting line-up. The 23-year-old said he owes his outstanding year thus far to his fellow teammates. “My form this year has been based on what the players around me have done for me,” he said. “If it wasn’t for their support at training as well as the coaching staff, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Late last month Latu’s excellent form was re-

warded with a contract extension that will see him remain a Panther until the end of 2020. The former Canterbury Bulldogs forward wasn’t off-contract until the end of 2017, but couldn’t resist putting pen to paper for three more years. He’s confident that something special is brewing at the foot of the Mountains. “The future of Penrith is exciting – the culture, the brand,” Latu said. “There are a lot of players here who have a great future in the NRL and, when the offer was put out there, I couldn’t think twice about it… it was awesome.” Latu will be fighting for his starting spot next season when Sam McKendry returns from injury and James Tamou joins the club from North Queensland. Latu and the Panthers will be looking to make up for their tough golden point defeat to the New Zealand Warriors last Saturday when they face the Sydney Roosters at Pepper Stadium tonight (Monday, August 8). Penrith need to win at least three of their last five games to be assured of a top eight spot and a place in the NRL Finals. “The morale of the team was a bit down after the Warriors game… the coach has a lot of trust in our attack but in defence, we need to tweak a few things,” Latu said. “The Roosters have a monster pack and the majority of the battle will be in the ruck – I’m looking forward to it.” The Panthers play the Roosters at Pepper Stadium at 7pm tonight. The game is also live on Fox Sports and Triple M.
