ncumbent Blue Mountains Mayor, Mark Greenhill, has secured his position for another term without contest. At the recent Council meeting held on Tuesday, September 27, the region’s 12 new Councillors were sworn in and quickly got down to the business of electing their new chief. The decision was unanimous, Greenhill for Mayor, with long-standing councillor Chris Van der Kley elected Deputy Mayor. Cr Greenhill thanked his new team for their support and went on to talk about the important roles they would all hold within the community. “If you’re elected you’re here equally, it doesn’t matter if you received 50.8 per cent of the vote or 15 per cent of the vote,” Cr Greenhill said. “Now, together, we have to make decisions for our community. “We’ve made a commitment about the sort of people we would be and we have to stick to it.” The seat of Deputy Mayor went to an open vote, with both Cr Van der Kley and Cr Kerry Brown vying for the spot. Cr Greenhill then moved a motion proposing Council introduce a new role of Alternate Deputy Mayor, who would step in for the Mayor and/or Deputy Mayor if they were both unavailable to attend a civic duty. It was decided that this motion would be voted on at Council’s October meeting. New Councillors Shae Foenander, Darryl Bowling and Brent Hoare also spoke to the floor for the first time, talking about some of the key policies they intend to work on during their term.

‘Playback’ to pay back local carers Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre to celebrate local carers with free theatre event next week ERIN MAMO
o acknowledge National Carers Week 2016, Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre is presenting ‘Playback’, a form of improvised theatre that began in New York in 1975. On Friday, October 14, the neighbourhood centre along with the Blue Mountains Playback Theatre will host the event at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre from 11am to 2pm. Program Coordinator at Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre, Marlene Churn, said you don’t have to be a carer to attend the event. “The aim of the day is to offer an opportunity for carers to have a break and have some fun, and also give the rest of the community the opportunity to come along and understand who carers are and what they do,” she said. “A lot of people don’t realise they are carers in a lot ways, it may just be taking care of a parent, but that classifies as being a carer.” At the event, audiences can expect to see a unique form of theatre that draws on experiences and stories from members of the crowd for its performance.
T
Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre staff Actors and musicians will enact these moments and stories using improvisation, voice movement and music. In this performance the actors and musi-
cians will look at the role of carers and the relationships between them and the person they care for. Ms Churn and her co-workers will be on
hand on the day to hand out information pamphlets and answer any questions people may have about carers and the Station Street-based centre. While ‘Playback’ is a free event thanks to support from Carers NSW, the neighbourhood centre will be seeking a gold coin donation. A light morning tea will also be provided on the day. National Carers Week, which runs from October 16 to October 22, is a time to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution carers make to our nation. There are over 2.8 million family and friend carers in Australia providing 36 million hours of care and support every week to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail. Anyone at any time can become a carer and National Carers Week is an opportunity to raise awareness among all Australians about the diversity of carers and their roles. To find out more information about the event or to book a place, call the Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre on 4782 1117 or visit www.kncinc.org.au. Bookings are essential.

ast Saturday morning, my Dad Steve lost his battle with cancer. all of us could only wish we had if dealt a similar hand in life. Dad was no thrill seeker and certainly no adventurer, but he did teach me about passion. He was so dedicated and passionate about the things he loved in life, and I know that has rubbed off on me – I blame him for my love of memorabilia and other collectables. He was probably the hardest worker
I’ve ever met, and instilled in me a work ethic that I believe has rewarded me well in life’s journey so far. I could not have asked for a better father. His love, his compassion and his caring nature never once disappeared in the 61 years that he was on this Earth. Life threw him a lemon in the end, but he leaves behind memories and a legacy that will last forever.

We still say ‘no’ to Badgerys Creek Residents opposing Western Sydney Airport slam final EIS which fails to identify specific flight path ERIN MAMO
esidents fighting against the proposed Western Sydney Airport at Bagerys Creek have slammed the final environmental study, saying it leaves community members even deeper in the dark by failing to identify where the planes will actually fly. The Government’s recently released Environment Impact Statement (EIS) talks about ‘broader principles’ in relation to flight paths and sets out preferred options, but it seems no specific flight path has been confirmed. Vice President of Residents Against Western Sydney Airport (RAWSA), Paul Goleby, was scathing of the document, saying the final EIS was even worse for the people of western Sydney because it contains even less information than the draft EIS released in October 2015. “Before there were detailed flight paths, now we just don’t know where the flight paths will be,” Mr Goleby said. “This means that nobody in western Sydney will know how they are going to be affected, probably until it’s too late.” Recently, members of RAWSA met with Opposition Environment Minister, Tony
R
Vice President of Residents Against Western Sydney Airport, Paul Goleby
Burke at Macquarie MP, Susan Templeman’s office to get his support on the issue. Now, members of the action group have their eyes set on Minister for Environment and Energy, Josh Frydenberg, but are yet to receive word on whether or not he will meet them. Mr Goleby said the group had previously reached out to Government ministers with little luck. “The Labor party has been the only ones who have put themselves out and made time for us,” he said. The Record tried to confirm with Mr Frydenberg’s office whether he was planning to meet with the action group, but did not receive a response by deadline. For now, RAWSA and their team of researchers are reviewing the EIS and making changes to their research papers to reflect the new information. The group, who object to the levels of noise and pollution and the impact on the Blue Mountains heritage site, are also planning their next moves, which will likely include further rallies. In the peak year of construction, the proposed airport is expected to generate around 3,180 direct and indirect jobs, according to the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development’s website.

Warning ahead of busy storm season SES shows dangers of entering floodwaters in dramatic demonstration at Whitewater Stadium JADE ALIPRANDI
SW State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers took to the waters of Penrith Whitewater Stadium late last week to demonstrate just how dangerous it is to enter floodwaters as the next storm season approaches. Having performed more than 500 flood rescues this year, SES volunteers are concerned the number could rise over the storm season if people continue to ignore the warnings. Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliott, said risking your own life, and those of SES volunteers is preventable. “NSW SES volunteers give up their time from work and family to protect their communities in floods and storms but people can do their part to limit the risk of injury and damage this storm season by staying out of floodwater,” he said. “Entering floodwater is extremely dangerous and it not only risks your life but the lives of our volunteers who have to perform the rescue.” Last Friday, September 23, SES volunteers performed a demonstration of a car submerged in water and the work required to rescue people stuck inside.
N

They also demonstrated how they would rescue someone who is being rushed down stream by heavy floodwaters two separate ways – one in a boat and one with an SES volunteer having to enter the water themselves. “It’s unfortunate that the volunteers have to perform these flood rescues – people need to appreciate that when you’re putting your own life at risk, you’re also risking the lives of three or four SES volunteers,” Mr Elliott said. NSW SES Acting Commissioner, Greg Newton, said the previous storm season was particularly busy for the volunteers. “We responded to more than 19,000 storm jobs last storm season and much of that damage was preventable,” he said. “The storm season runs from October to March but severe weather can happen at any time, so it’s important people prepare their properties by maintaining yards, balconies, cleaning gutters, trimming overhanging branches and checking their roofs are in good condition.” According to research conducted by NRMA Insurance, one in four people or 25 per cent of car owners have driven through floodwater and of those, close to half did so because they didn’t think it was dangerous.

Art exhibition provides key insights Former Blue Mountains HSC students feature in major ARTEXPRESS exhibition at Katoomba gallery ERIN MAMO
RTEXPRESS 2016 is on at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and is featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks from the Visual Arts component of the 2015 HSC exam. The exhibition, which is a joint venture of the NSW Department of Education and the Board of Studies, is showcasing a selection of 33 artworks by students from the Blue Mountains, Central West and NSW. The major exhibition provides insight into issues that are important to the young artists, such as cultural and gender identity, globalisation and climate change. Lithgow High’s Jessie Luchetti, who painted her Grandfather in her piece ‘Mofar’, says she is honoured to have been selected into ARTEXPRESS. “I always aspired to become part of the exhibition,” Ms Luchetti said. “My painting is a reflection of the stages my grandfather has gone through in his life looking through his own glasses. “He taught me to draw as a young girl and I have always loved to paint so choosing my subject matter was an easy choice.” The exhibition demonstrates a range of

Students from schools such as Lithgow High School, All Saints’ College, Bathurst, Wycliffe Christian School, Warimoo and
St Columba’s Catholic College, Springwood have their work on display in the main gallery space of the Cultural Centre at Katoomba. Each piece in ARTEXPRESS was selected by gallery curators, education officers and an ARTEXPRESS officer from works nominated by HSC markers that are deemed

Mental Health
Blue Mountains artists help beat the black dog ERIN MAMO
hen local artist Beth Gibbeson lost her son to suicide 17 years ago, she vowed to help spare others from the devastation of losing a loved one by raising money for mental health. Ms Gibbeson forms part of Artists for Causes, a local group of painters, drawers and photographers who will be supporting the Black Dog Institute, a dedicated not-for-profit organisation which aims to improve the lives of people affected by poor mental health, including depression and bi-polar. Beginning on October 7, the group will unveil an art exhibition at St Finbars Parish in Glenbrook, with the majority of pieces up for sale. Ms Gibbeson, who is co-ordinating the exhibition, has been fundraising for the Black Dog Institute since losing her son, Paul, to bi-polar in 1999. She said she hopes to raise enough money so other families don’t have to go through what she did. “After a 12-year battle we lost our son to suicide,” Ms Gibbeson said. “I think my husband would have gone the same way, too, if it hadn’t been for the
W
intervention of the Black Dog Institute. He had tried many treatments prior to seeing them and nothing worked. “I’m hoping to spare other families from the pain and the heartache of losing a loved one.” The diverse group of artists participating are made up of award-winning painters, drawers and photographers, along with four Year 11 art students from St Columba’s College. There will be over 130 pieces of art on display during the exhibition. Artist, Frank Hodgert, whose work will be showcased has also kindly donated his painting ‘New Day,’ which will be raffled off during the exhibition to generate more funds. The opening will start at 7pm and tickets are $20, which includes canapés and champagne and there will be lucky door prizes drawn throughout the night. Continuing into the weekend, the exhibition will run on both Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9 from 10am to 4pm. Tickets on these days are $5. Devonshire tea will be provided over the weekend by the Blue Mountains Lantern Club, which raises money for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children. For more information about the exhibition call Ms Gibbeson on 0490 356 048.

Hotly anticipated movies set to arrive Not-to-be-missed films from Sydney’s Queer Screen Film Festival set to be played in the Mountains ERIN MAMO
he best lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) films from all over the world are coming to the Blue Mountains straight from Sydney’s Queer Screen Film Festival. The Queer Screen Film Festival, which began in 2013, is a month-long event that showcases LGBTIQ movies in Sydney’s CBD throughout September. Now, event organisers will bring highlights from their festival to the Mountains, with four movies set to be played at Mt Vic Flicks and the Carrington Hotel. Queer Screen Festival Director, Paul Struthers, said he wanted to bring the Queer Screen films to the Blue Mountains because he knows there is a massive LGBTIQ community here. “After the Mardi Gras Film Festival earlier this year we took a selection of films to the Blue Mountains and the response was so positive,” Mr Struthers said. “Most of the screenings were full, which means people really want these films in the Mountains. “We thought, we must come back again.” The first of the four films to be screened

is ‘Southwest of Salem’, which will be played in the ballroom at the Carrington Hotel on Friday, October 21 at 7pm. This documentary follows four Latina lesbian women wrongly convicted of the gang rape of two young girls. The true story promises to move anyone who sees it, and in a screening in San Francisco recently, received a seven-minute standing ovation. ‘First Girl I loved’, will be shown on Saturday, October 22 at 3.30pm at Mt Vic Flicks and is said to be one of the best lesbian coming of age films ever. ‘Paris’, a love story, will also be shown on October 22 at 6pm. The final film, ‘Major’, will be shown on Sunday, October 23 at the Carrington Hotel at 3pm. This film, which Mr Struthers said is possibly his favourite, tells the story of a transgender elder, Miss Major GriffinGracy, who, as a powerful mentor and advocate, helps transgender people in her community. Mr Struthers said each of the four films show a side of the LGBTIQ experience that is often not presented in mainstream media. “It’s hard to find a mix of our stories on screens,” he said.

Open up your fridge and take a good look at the contents. If you’re anything like the average Australian household, 20 per cent of those food items will end up in the trash. Multiply that amount by every home in Australia and as a country we are disposing of $10 billion worth of food per year. That’s a staggering number and it’s costing the average home $1,100 annually. So how do we address this issue and get the most out of our grocery purchases? As with many aspects of

life, planning is a must. Having a clear idea of what type of meals you’re going to make, and exactly what ingredients you need will help to reduce waste. When grocery shopping remember bigger doesn’t always mean better. Yes that huge bag of potatoes may seem like a good bargain when compared to a smaller bag but if you don’t use it
you’ve wasted money, along with half a bag of potatoes. How many times have you picked up an item at the supermarket only to find you already had one at home. Keep a close eye on what you have on hand so you don’t double up. If you do end up with an oversupply of certain foods, make use of them with bulk meals that can be frozen for later use. Those cooking for one or two people can find it particularly hard to keep waste down, but that doesn’t mean you have to eat the same meal for several days in a row. Instead, try planning out meals that make use of the same ingredients in a variety of different ways. This way you won’t end up with a pile of sad, wilted vegetables sitting at the bottom of the crisper. It also pays to get smarter with the food you do throw out by starting a composting system at home for organic matter. This can then be used in the garden to help recycle waste and save money. Lastly, consider how much food you are really going to need. It’s better to go back to the shops for more rather than throwing food, and money, in the bin. Happy eating!

the proceeding five years. A grim period indeed and one that any investor wishes to never happen again. But as always seems to happen, markets do recover and sure enough, returned back money that had so quickly been evaporated. Sadly, human nature being what it is, meant we stood on the sidelines and watched it all happen. At least we prom-
ised ourselves to be ready the next time it happens! Fear and greed will always be intrinsic elements of investment markets, and as such, we tend to act accordingly to whichever one is prevailing at the time. One solution to smooth out both market volatility and the accompanying emotional roller coaster is termed ‘dollar cost averaging’. Quite simply, it is investing a fixed dollar amount on a regular schedule rather than in one lump sum; your focus being the accumulation of assets on a regular basis, rather than trying to pick the best time to invest. This habitual buying takes full advantage of market fluctuations as your allocated monthly investment amount buys more or less depending on prevailing prices. It is then a simple matter to calculate an average buy price over, say a 12-month period. With dollar cost averaging, you take a lot of the emotion and fear out of investing because where the market goes in the short-term is far less important to you, as long as you stick to a regular investment plan. If an event hits the economy and your investment falls in value, don’t panic, you just end up buying more shares at a lower price.

Severe share market downturns can certainly knock the wind from the sails of even the most hardened investor. Most of us will view such events not as an opportunity, but rather as a pretty strong warning to get out and don’t come back! And rightly so, I say, having experienced many such events during my time as an adviser. Who could forget the severe market volatility experienced during the GFC? Relentless market under performance during this time certainly destroyed the majority of value that had built up over

o you find that the majority of accolades relating to achievements in business tend to focus on young people? While it is a great feat to create a successful business by the time you are 25-years-old (or even 35), those who are older might be forgiven for thinking that they are ‘too old’ to start a business. There are a few reasons why starting a business when you are over 50-yearsold can make you a better business owner than starting when you are younger. First and foremost, you have life experience. You have likely encountered many different people and personalities, you can see the bigger picture in situations, and you are more likely to have patience to deal with each step. You are also likely to have a larger, and more diverse, network that you can draw on to share their advice or offer their services. And if you require finance, a lending institution is more likely to let you borrow what you need, as you are likely to have other assets or a track record of financial stability.
At an older age, you are more likely to better understand where your passions lie. Younger business owners can get caught up in the idea of running a business, more than passion about the idea itself. You are far clearer about what you like and don’t like. And you are highly likely to have experienced failure. This means you will have learnt valuable life lessons and may fear failure a whole lot less than when you were younger. You understand the importance of contingency plans and you know from experience that bouncing back from failure boosts your self-esteem. Younger business owners are not lacking in self-esteem or confidence, but this is often drawn primarily from optimism, rather than balanced with reality. So if you are in the ‘older’ age range, and have always dreamed of starting a business, you haven’t necessarily ‘missed the boat’! If the passion is still there, don’t be held back by thoughts that you need to be in your 20’s.
Win business every time – simply by following up on work quoted! Small businesses win work by using sales quotes. Yet they often don’t realise that how they prepare quotes can cost them business. Many lose revenue by not following up on quotes or turning quotes around fast enough. According to a recent survey, the number one financial challenge of small businesses is cash flow and getting paid. Getting on top of the quoting process can reduce the number of days to acceptance, which reduces the number of days to getting paid and improves your cash flow. Therefore getting on top of your quotes makes a real difference. Here’s some tips to help you prepare quotes that get accepted: 1. Ensure your quote is properly constructed A quote is often the first impression of your business that you give to prospective clients. Every quote that you send out should tell the client a little bit about your business. It should detail the prices, costs and services that they’re expected to receive. Include terms and conditions
in plain English. Make sure the branding of the quote is consistent with your business’s brand. And, most importantly, use a call to action at the end through an acceptance or modification process. A clear and simple quote increases the chance of a sale the first time and reduces the back and forth effort. 2. Send a quote within 24 hours It’s a good idea to quickly prepare and send quotes on the spot or immediately after an initial meeting. This efficiency helps you to respond to an opportunity anytime, anywhere – without the need to return to the office to construct a quote. 3.Diarise to follow up on your quotes Don’t rely on your memory to follow up, use a system and stick to it. 4. Follow up within 2-3 days of sending Sometimes, business or industry protocol dictates when you should follow up. However, it is always best that you strike while the iron’s hot: Once you’ve quoted, follow up between 24 to 48 hours after to ensure that the client has received and understood the quote. This is a good way to get in front of your client and give the quote every chance of being accepted.

Noni takes us to another world
O KATE REID
ne of the great things about storytelling is that it allows us to form emotional con nections with characters that we may never have had the chance to meet in our day to day lives. For much loved Australian entertainer Noni Hazelhurst, this is what attracted her to take on the role of an ageing, homeless woman – the loan character in
the upcoming play ‘Mother’, which opens at The Joan in October. “I feel one of the functions of the arts is to promote empathy and to emphasise that we as human beings share more similarities than differences,” Noni said. “I think more than ever we are living in very divisive times and very judgmental times. I guess I leapt at the chance to bring this character to life because if I can get one person to rethink their attitude or to give their time to people who need it then to me that’s wonderful.” The one woman show about Christine – a woman who has lived a colourful yet troubled life – was written specifically for Noni, who worked with the play’s
director Matt Scholten at the Melbourne Theatre Company in 2013. After Noni finished up with the TV show ‘A Place To Call Home’ she was looking to take on a new acting challenge. During a discussion with Scholten she came up with the idea of creating a one woman show. The pair joined forces with playwright Daniel Keene – known for his tendency to produce works that push the envelope – and decided to focus the production around the themes of judgement and empathy. 10 days later Daniel had produced a script. “It was just this most beautiful piece of
work that I’m really privileged to have been given,” Noni said. According to Noni the reaction from audiences has proved that opening the door to worlds we ourselves haven’t experienced is often all the encouragement we need to take positive action. “We’ve had people who’ve said I’m going straight home to make a donation to the local homeless shelter,” she said. “It just brings me great joy to think that we’re increasing empathy in the world; that’s got to be a good thing.” ‘Mother’ will be on at The Joan on Friday, October 7 at 8pm and Saturday, October 8 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $50-$55. For more information, call 4723 7600.

LIFE & STYLE RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
It’s all about relationships this week Rams … of the romantic, platonic and business variety. Avoid the temptation to rush or play power games. If you try to convert others to your point of view (and do so in a hasty or forceful manner) then you’ll meet with resistance from all directions. Instead, use your energy in positive ways. If you connect with like-minded people and pursue compatible joint ventures, then it will be win-win for everyone. Cooperation is the clever way to go.
Joanne Madeline
Moore
HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Don’t be too black and white about issues! There are many shades of grey, as you navigate your way through a changing personal or professional landscape. With Venus in your relationship zone, the quickest way to romance is to smoke the peace pipe with your partner. Singles – give superficial suitors a wide berth and look for someone with emotional substance. It’s a wonderful weekend to go camping or enjoy the great outdoors with your favourite four-legged friend.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Geminis are the social gadabouts of the zodiac but this week’s stars encourage you to slow down, calm down, compromise, listen and learn. Enjoy the company of family and friends but steer clear of tactless talk, garrulous gossip and ridiculous rumours. Mercury is powering through your self-expression zone until October 24. So it’s the perfect time to tackle a creative project as you write, draw, dance, perform, paint, play music or sing up a storm.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016
Crabs can be cautious, but a rickety romantic relationship will only improve if you come out of your shell and get to work! If you are single, don’t settle for second best. Avoid being cantankerous or confrontational on Friday and Saturday. Instead, focus on bringing more fun and happiness into your home. Draw inspiration from Desmond Tutu “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
The week starts well when you have the motivation to clear up a problem with a loved one. But avoid being a bossy Lion on Friday and Saturday, when there’s a fine line between being passionately proactive and just plain pushy! In order for your relationships to blossom, you need to give others plenty of personal space and room to shine. When it comes to social media, don’t rush. Think things through carefully before you publish, post, text or tweet.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Tuesday and Wednesday are when your organisational skills and multi-tasking talents really excel. However, if you confuse important issues with trivial ones (and make mountains out of molehills) then it will be a long and exhausting week. Your ruler Mercury moves through Libra (from October 7-24) which encourages you to relax, re-charge, and bring some much-needed balance into your busy world. Some Virgos will receive welcome news via social media.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
With the Sun, Jupiter and then Mercury all moving through your sign, the buzz words for this week are creativity, confidence and communication. Don’t worry about what other people are wearing, doing or saying! It’s time to focus on your individual style, plans, talents and future. So your motto for the moment is from celebrated writer and wit Gore Vidal (born on October 3, 1925): “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
The mid-week Venus/Pluto connection encourages deep emotions, intense connections and plenty of passion. So make sure you get up-close-and-personal with someone special. But then the celestial energy shifts when Pluto squares the Sun on Friday and Saturday. Which boosts your temperamental streak and your control-freak tendencies. Smart Scorpios will settle down, and transform a negative into a positive.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
The symbol for Sagittarius is the Archer – with his (or her) arrow aimed towards the future. But are you so busy rushing around that you’re neglecting what’s happening in the here and now? Or are you too busy worrying about the mistakes you might make further down the track? Slow down and have confidence that your decisions will turn out fine in the end. As birthday great Susan Sarandon says: “I take responsibility for the ups and downs of my life, and that is very liberating.”
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Seize the opportunity to wield your personal power in positive ways. You’re not bossy – you’re bold. And you’re not domineering – you’re dynamic! But don’t take criticism too seriously or narrow your focus too much. Saturn is asking you to be supremely practical. On Friday and Saturday you’ll be frustrated by some people’s lack of motivation, but it’s not the time to push buttons. Do your best to network with colleagues, connect with friends, and focus on positive solutions.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Aquarians love to lunge at life with adventurous abandon but this week will work best if you employ a more strategic approach. If you think things through (and do the research required) then projects will proceed in a slow and steady fashion that leads to future success. Consultation and attention to detail will certainly get you a lot further than being slap-dash. And don’t let someone bulldoze you into doing something that you really don’t want to do.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
The future depends on the goals you set yourself now. And don’t let others talk down your dreams, undermine your confidence, or amplify your shortcomings. With Saturn sauntering through your career zone, the road ahead is rocky and there’ll be detours along the way. So you need to rise to the challenge with relish. A practical plan will get you a lot further than Piscean passivity! Show others that you can handle extra work.

WINE LIST
DAVID ELLIS
What a blend!
T
here would be others, we suspect, who would lay claim that a wine comprising no less than five varieties was the result of carefully handselecting fruit off as many vineyards or blocks as there were varieties, and then judiciously blending these to specific proportions of each. But not John Davis, Owner-Vigneron of Peppertree Wines in the Hunter Valley and his Head Winemaker, Gwyn Olsen. When it comes to their 2016 Rogue Vineyard ‘Wild in the Wood’ Hunter Valley Field Blend, they’ll readily tell you that this one’s the result of a “misfit” block planted somewhat haphazardly 20 years ago with left-over Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc from other blocks rather than be wasted, and today simply all-in machine harvested. And that resultant wine turns out, in fact, to be a really rewarding drop, with lingering individual varietal characteristics and a lovely mouth-feel. Pay $30 and enjoy it on its own as warmer days approach, or at the table with a range of lunch or dinner-time seafood, chicken or veal dishes. Or do as we did and pair it with pan-fried pork loin chops, apple sauce and potato cakes. One to note: 2014 was a great vintage in the Canberra District, and Jim’s Lerida Estate Lake George Pinot Noir explodes with luscious fruit flavours and integrated tannins. At $26.50 a bottle, enjoy with a variety of fare from duck to mushrooms, spring lamb or oily fish. See you next week!

Testimonials We recently sold our first home through Troy who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Being our first time selling Troy walked us through every step in the process. Although Troy had fantastic support from his team at Jim Aitken, as an individual he always went above and beyond and kept us in the loop the whole time with his integrity and honesty. Troy is a true professional and aims to deliver a positive experience for the buyer and seller, and for us as the seller this was exactly our experience. With each step expectations were put into place and he communicated with us the whole time. If you have read this testimony this far it probably sounds like I’m blowing Troy’s trumpet, and I am. I would have no hesitation recommending Troy to any seller or buyer.

enrith have re-signed two of their most important players, with skipper Matt Moylan and future Origin star Bryce Cartwright inking new deals to stay at the foot of the Mountains until 2021. Last week both Moylan and Cartwright agreed to extend their current contracts by four years and three years respectively. The re-signings are huge for Penrith, who have assembled a team more than capable of challenging for a title in the near future. 25-year-old Moylan, who took over the captaincy role and made his Origin debut for NSW this year, said it was great to secure his future. “To play for my hometown club and to represent the people of Penrith is an honour and a privilege,” he said. “With the squad we have and the direction that we are heading, I’m sure we’re building towards something special.” 21-year-old Cartwright made his NRL debut in 2014 and, after fighting back from a serious ankle injury, has quickly grown into a key member of the Panthers outfit. Panthers Chairman, Dave O’Neill, said the resigning of the pair was indicative of Penrith’s Bryce Cartwright and Matt Moylan have signed long-term deals with Penrith. commitment to being a development club.
