mployment and investment were among topics discussed at the recent Blue Mountains Council economic roundtable forum, which was attended by 25 participants from education, business, health, environment, community and planning sectors in the area. The economic roundtable inspired a lively discussion of the region’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and ideas for partnerships, extending growth, overcoming obstacles and potential investment initiatives to suit the Blue Mountains region. “I welcome the contribution of participants at the economic roundtable to achieving a more diverse and robust local economy in the future,” Mayor Mark Greenhill said. One of the world’s leading scholars and practitioners of urban policy, Professor Ed Blakely, addressed the particpants at the recent forum, in relation to the development of its economic strategy. Mr Greenhill said the development of an economic strategy is driven by Council’s commitment to a stronger, diverse and resilient local economy. “An economic strategy will help develop our vision for a dynamic, sustainable economy and a city that encourages and

facilitates a variety of industries, enterprises and businesses appropriate in a World Heritage environment,” he said. Cr Greenhill also believes that Council’s commitment to supporting local business and economic development is going from strength to strength. “The establishment of the Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise (BMEE) in 2012 was a significant step in our commitment to economic development of the city,” he said. “In a short period of time BMEE has demonstrated its ability to deliver economic development initiatives and industry development outcomes across the Blue Mountains.” Council has delivered major cultural arts and tourism infrastructure to support tourism and economic development, including the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, Blue Mountains Theatre, Great Blue Mountains Trail, an upgrade of Council’s tourist parks, tracks and lookouts. As a JobShop partner, Council facilitates an annual mini-expo on employment, skills and careers that provides an important opportunity for job seekers. In 2014, Council joined the Small Business Friendly Councils Program in recognition of the importance of the local small business sector as a vital contributor to the community and economy. Blue Mountains City Council ran an economic roundtable on June 17

y day Ben Tankard is a Blaxlandbased married father of two. By night he is an accomplished artist who strives to create pieces of art that people may not initially understand or be prepared for. Now Ben’s work will appear in his first major Sydney show this Thursday, June 30 in North Sydney. Presented by Anala Art Advisory, ‘Reworked,’ will showcase 14 pieces of Ben’s work that includes vibrant interpretations of the classic Penguin paper back novels and reworked Uno cards. The paintings are distorted representations of the book covers and Uno cards, transformed with random lettering, retaining the essence of the original but also becoming something new. “I like to see people’s reactions to something different,” Ben said. “I’m inspired by Andy Warhol and his idea of taking an existing image and blowing it up and making it my own.” Ben has been painting for over 10 years. Online, he has sold roughly 70 paintings in Australia and Singapore in the last six months. Locally, his work has been on display at the Blackheath Art Society Winter Exhibition and the Springwood Art Show for a number of years. The Record spoke to Ben as he was commuting to Sydney to enter a piece in the 2016 Archibald Prize – a portrait of Richard Claremont, a successful impressionist. Having lived in the Blue Mountains for over 10 years, Ben loves the artistic and diverse communities within the Mountains. “I’m constantly inspired living in the

Blaxland artist Ben Tankard standing with his unique art Mountains. I love the bushland and sandstone cliffs of Glenbrook and Lapstone, the local villages and the world-class Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba,” he said. One of my biggest dreams would be to have an exhibition at the Cultural Centre one day.” Ben also donated some of his work earlier this year to raise money for repairs to the Blue Mountains Creative Arts Centre in Glenbrook. Locally, Ben’s art will be appearing at the Virgin Walls Gallery in Blackheath from September 30 to October 4. For more information, visit www.virginwalls.com.au.

got involved with politics because I became disillusioned with the current state of politics in Australia, especially with the conservative Liberal National Party who I was once a long time supporter. I live with my wife Shizue Halley and two children, Kurt and Tami, in the Blue Mountains which is the heartland for the electorate of Macquarie. I was born in Australia and have always believed in supporting and protecting Australian norms and values. I went to primary school in Winmalee and high school in Springwood. I became involved in the NSW National and International security industry, and continue to this day to be involved in the field of educating people through my international business, Tactical Krav Maga, based in the Lower Blue Mountains. My business is about Defensive Tactics, Terrorism, Radical Islam and Suicide Terrorism, predominately within Australia and South East Asia. I hold a degree from Murdoch University in Security, Terrorism and Counter Terrorism, and I am also working on a second degree in Politics and International Studies. I’m also a trainer for the Indonesian Counter Terrorism Police. My key issues are Economic and Environmental issues effecting the Macquarie electorate. If elected I will listen to your issues even if I don’t personally agree or support them as everyone is entitled to voice their opinion.

ouise Markus, Federal Member for Macquarie, said the upcoming election is a clear choice between the Coalition’s Plan for a strong new economy, with more jobs and more opportunity, or Labor’s higher taxes, more waste and weak borders. A Coalition Government will secure a more prosperous future for the people of Macquarie, and greater western Sydney families, through innovative industries, a strong defence plan, trade deals that will give our farmers a competitive edge and through a package that will grow small businesses and create jobs. As a mother and a former social worker of 25 years, I understand the importance of investment in education and jobs for youth. Young people in Macquarie will benefit from the Coalitions education plan which includes an increase in recurrent funding by 27 per cent. Youth looking for work will benefit from the Youth Jobs PaTH initiative which offers an internship placement of 4-12 weeks. It will be voluntary and provide incentives to businesses to host an intern. We will also continue to deliver critical 21st century infrastructure. Locally we have already invested $2,500,000 for the upgrade of the Ross Street Intersection at Glenbrook. We also offer benefits from tax cuts, which Labor want to stop, and a company tax rate reduction to help local businesses grow and employ more staff. I will continue to be a strong voice for the people of Macquarie.

The Candidates – In Their Own Words ’m Hal Ginges, the Animal Justice Party’s (AJP) candidate for Macquarie. My wife, Heather and I, have lived in the Mountains for about 40 years and our children and grandchildren also live in the Mountains. I’m a solicitor in Katoomba and practise mainly in the area of criminal law. I have a PhD from Western Sydney University and tutor there in Philosophy. I’m supporting the AJP in bringing attention to the cruelty with which we humans treat non-human animals. The recent shocking revelations of exported cattle being bludgeoned to death, the cruelty to greyhounds, puppy farms and factory farming, and the wanton killing of our native wildlife are the horrors the AJP wants to see addressed in parliament. About 80 per cent of the legislation that comes before parliament has an impact upon animals. One such local issue is the western Sydney airport. The Environmental Impact Statement for the airport does not give adequate attention to the effects upon native fauna, not to mention the wider environment and the Blue Mountains world heritage National Park. I’m opposed to the construction of the airport. When the issue does not have an immediate effect upon animals, the AJP’s policies are based upon the principle of compassion. I also oppose the confinement of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island.

s a tradesman, I’m sick of having my profession used as a token pin-up by the major parties when they’re not putting forward policies I support. That’s why I’m standing as a candidate for the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party in Macquarie. While I’m a keen shooter and firearm collector, holding category A, B, G and H licences, I also know that farmers and people in the outer west of Sydney have been forgotten by the major parties. I’ve been hunting and fishing all over New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria since age five, and it is an experience everybody should be able to share with their friends and family. I’m passionate about the outdoors and believe that our natural wonders should be opened up for everybody to enjoy sustainably, while conserving them for future generations. We shouldn’t simply be focused on locking up our National Parks or stopping people from fishing in marine parks. There’s no reason why these activities can’t continue in ways that still reaches the goals of these conservation areas. I know that it has been only the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party who are standing up for farmers’ right to farm, and supported the NSW Farmers Association in overturning restrictions on land management. The party currently has six MPs in State Parliaments across the country and I’m looking to be their first in the Federal Parliament, so that I can bring common sense back to Government.

joined The Greens because their policies on education, health, social justice and the environment are truly progressive, and they are the only major party with a humane and rational approach to asylum seekers and refugees. I’m a teacher with some 30 years’ experience in primary and secondary schools with significant periods spent in remote Aboriginal communities. More recently, I have lectured in universities and adult education colleges. At present, I work with Indigenous students at Western Sydney University. I’m passionate about the fair and equitable funding of schools, TAFE and universities. I am strongly against the proposed western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. It is a significant threat to the World Heritage listing of the Greater Blue Mountains area, as well as to the amenity of Blue Mountains and western Sydney residents. The Greens believe High Speed Rail can provide the service and the jobs, without the noise and pollution from a second airport. The High Speed Rail alternative will also create regional development along the rail line, while a second airport will only continue to concentrate development in greater Sydney. I believe Australia needs urgent action on climate change to ensure food security, protect our natural environment and minimise extreme weather and bushfires. Ending Australia’s reliance on coal and moving to a clean energy economy is the way to create jobs and secure our energy needs.

t this election, I think there is a clear choice about the sort of representative our community needs to have in Federal Parliament. We need a fighter. We need someone who will represent the Blue Mountains community in Canberra and make sure our voice is heard. More than that, we need someone who understands the needs of our local community. My husband Ron and I have lived in the Mountains for over 25 years. We’ve raised our children here and we are rebuilding our home in Winmalee after the bushfires. I am completely committed to this community and I want to protect it for future generations. Labor has a proven track record of delivery for the Mountains which the Liberals and the sitting MP cannot match. Without even being the Member, I have already delivered $9.5 million for the Springwood Theatre and Hub and $2.5 million for the Blue Mountains National Park in Glenbrook. More than that, I have been fighting alongside the community against the 24-hour airport at Badgerys Creek, and fighting for the full Gonski education funding package for our local schools. I will continue to fight against cuts to Medicare and I will fight for TAFE. We need a Mountains voice in Canberra representing us, instead of a Canberra voice in the Mountains representing the government. I will be that voice for the Mountains.

love the Blue Mountains area. Having lived locally for 35 years, I am passionate about preserving the historical and bio diverse environment. My husband, Stephen and I, run a family real estate in Richmond, Hawkesbury City Realty. I am passionate about protecting the Australian culture and lifestyle that I have known all my life. I now have the awesome privilege to stand for the Christian Democratic Party for Macquarie. The Christian Democratic Party is your “Conservative Alternative” in this coming election. I believe we need to have people in Government, who provide an independent voice to the people outside the two main parties. We stand for the good old, die-hard Aussies, having a conservative approach to the integration of multiculturalism, family and environmental issues. I will support legislation that reduces our deficit and grows our economy, provides jobs, provides pensioners with a lifestyle of dignity and those needing support and assistance to join or re-join the workforce. Growth for our hospitals must be a priority and supporting the next generation through our school system is important. I support the protection of our Superannuation, Medicare, protection of our environment in regards to the proposed western Sydney airport and the surrounding infrastructure, to ensure that our historic areas and Blue Mountains are least affected.

I am married to Andrew and have two boys, Scott, 24, and Ryan, 16. As a family we have lived and worked from 1993-2011 in three different countries – Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Kuala Lumpur. We have had some amazing experiences and been exposed to many life experiences and cultural situations from living abroad. Now we reside in Sydney and are enjoying all it has to offer. I work part-time and volunteer two days a week as a receptionist at Ronald McDonald House in Westmead, which supports families of sick children being treated at the hospital. I get so much from my volunteer work, being able to help families through difficult times and make them as comfortable as they can be during their stay.

Improved car park to breathe new life into Winmalee
Local opera soprano set to sing on the grandest of stages ERIN MAMO
pera singer Tabatha McFadyen from Wentworth Falls has been singing her way around the world and is now one of seven finalists in the national Dame Joan Sutherland Award Competition. The competition, which will be held on July 22 in Queensland, is one of Australia’s most prestigious opera awards for up and coming divas, with contestants battling it out for the top prize of $15,000. “I’m thrilled to have been selected as a finalist and am really thankful for this opportunity,” Tabatha said. At 25, Tabatha is no stranger to the stage. She was initially trained at the Queensland Conservatorium, graduating in 2013 with First Class Honours and has since gone on to perform in many concerts like La Contessa at the Hawaiian Festival of Performing Arts, Musetta at the Festival Opera in New Zealand and as a guest artist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Tabatha also continues to perform with her long-term partner Alex Raineri in recitals across the country. “I’ve been really fortunate to have been a working singer since completing my training, both in opera and recital,” she said.

lue Mountains City Council has completed an upgrade of the carpark at the popular Summerhayes Park in Winmalee, creating bigger, safer and more accessible parking. “The carpark upgrade is a welcome improvement to one of the most heavily used sports grounds in the city,” Mayor Mark Greenhill said. Council formalised the existing grass and gravel car park which now provides 87 sealed car spaces, including four accessible spaces, creating 25 extra car spaces.
B
The construction of accessible pathways around the perimeter of the car park has improved access to the sports precinct for people with all abilities. “The capacity of the car park has increased significantly and the parking arrangements mean it is much safer for everyone using the park, especially children,” Cr Greenhill said. The car park design and construction work also features a rain garden that collects water from the hard surface to reduce storm water runoff. The $250,000 upgrade is the first stage of a three stage project to seal all car parking areas at Summerhayes Park.
Welcome • • • •
Tabatha McFadyen Tabatha has also won an impressive amount of awards in the last three years. In 2015 she won the Richard Bonynge Prize as part of the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award, and the Opera and Arts Support Group Scholarship. Nowadays the singer spends a lot of time travelling and preparing for shows, but goes home to Wentworth Falls whenever she can.

Koalas that are injured or sick spend time at the hospital until they are better and are ready to be released back into their natural habitat. You have the option to walk around the vicinity yourself and admire the koalas or wait for the guided tour, held at 3pm every day. The hospital takes in between 200 to 300 koalas every year, with the option for visitors to ‘adopt’ a koala during their visit. Koalas who have a disease, have been injured by a fire or who have been hit by a car all stay at the hospital while they are rehabilitated. If you love animals and nature, stopping off at the koala hospital is a must.
WHALE WATCHING
Whale watching is one of the must-do attractions in Port Macquarie
Now is the perfect time to go whale watching, with Port Macquarie renowned for being inundated with whales between May and November. You can head out on the boat with The Cruise Terminal and experience something you will never forget. Up to 200 whales are in Port Macquarie waters at any given time in whale watching season, with The Cruise Terminal taking tourists from whale pod to whale pod so they don’t miss a minute. The Cruise Terminal staff are friendly and willing to tell you everything there is to know about whales, what to expect and what you will see when you’re out on

the water. You won’t go out on the boat unless there are whales, which is value for your dollar. The scenes are beautiful as you watch these enormous mammals splash about in their natural habitat during their yearly migration. If you’re early in the season, there may not be as many whales but from June onwards, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see some action. The Cruise Terminal also offers a BBQ lunch cruise, a twilight cruise, a kidfriendly boom net cruise, and a cruise on board The Chinese Junk ship, one of the most iconic vessels in Port Macquarie.

As the 2016 Federal Election fast approaches the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition are rolling out promises thick and fast across the country. There have been a number of legal matters that have been of significant debate as part of the election campaign, such as the issue of same sex marriage. Malcolm Turnbull wants to hold a plebiscite to determine the issue, while Bill Shorten says he will seek to legalise it in his first 100 days of governing should he be elected.

Examples like this require changes to existing laws or the introduction of new laws to be able to become reality. The truth is that no matter who is elected any changes to existing laws or introduction of new ones must pass through both houses of parliament in order to become a reality. This means that all of these election promises regardless of which leader is promising them are still at
the mercy of the parliament post-election. In Australia the introduction of a new law occurs as follows: 1. A proposal law called a “bill” is introduced to the House of Representatives where it is debated; 2. If a majority of the members of the House of Representatives agree with the law the bill is eventually passed meaning it is sent up to the Senate for review; 3. The bill is introduced to the Senate and is then debated in a similar fashion as to what occurred in the House of Representatives; 4. If a majority of the members of the Senate agree with the law the bill is then passed again after which it will receive Royal Assent by the Governor General and come in to full effect. As you can see there are a number of difficult steps any new bill must overcome before it is actually enacted into the law. Put simply, no matter who you vote for, many of their promises can only be put into effect if they obtain the necessary majority in the House of Represents and/or Senate after the election. Vote with care.

ensure that the ‘3 million’ bacteria inhabiting the palm of a hand are not transferred to you via a cheese and salad sandwich. By accepting money into this gloved hand rather defeats the purpose, I would have thought. What started as a good impression of an establishment is quickly shattered. The same could be said
about our financial institutions through their ads for superannuation or managed investment funds. View any advertisement for this type of product, and usually the most prominent feature is the rate of return. Now, this rate may be last year’s return, or an average of the last three or five years returns. Whatever the figure, it will be historical. Now look closely, do you see an asterisk? Go to the foot of the advertisement and find the corresponding asterisk. There, among other bits of information, will be the following; ‘past returns are no indication of future performance’ or similar. Then why did you tell me a past return? That one sentence next to the asterisk, rather defeats the whole purpose, really. It is somewhat akin to being given the name of last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, interesting to know but it won’t make you any money today! Products like superannuation have a multitude of facets to them, all of which need to be considered when looking at changing funds or investing for the first time. Last year’s investment return is certainly not one of them.

I love cappuccino, and start each workday morning with one. Frequenting different establishments, I have noticed the misuse of the ‘gloved hand’. You may have seen a coffee shop attendant or sandwich maker who has one hand enclosed in a surgical glove. A good sign, suggesting the establishment takes cleanliness seriously. However, for some odd reason, when it’s time to pay, they take your money with that gloved hand. Are you kidding me? I thought the glove was to

Sh Should your business have a social conscience? h

What you need to know before June 30 rolls around

ollowing on from last week’s article about having a social conscience and the ethical dilemmas associated with misaligned values of our clients, this article takes this idea a step further: should your business actively seek to support social causes? Make sure you consider the following as you seek to answer this question. Most social causes are intrinsically linked to political, religious or other value-laden foundations. You need to consider that your link to a particular social cause may alienate you from potential clients. This may not be an issue, as you might prefer to only work with clients who share your values (or are sympathetic to them). But it is a question worth considering before choosing a social cause to align your business with. Consider that some causes create a culture of dependency rather than truly empowering underprivileged communities. While the vast majority of charities and social causes are motivated by a deep-seated desire to help others, some do this better than others.
Have you heard the proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”? Aim to support social causes that empower people rather than make them dependent – it is far more worthwhile and has far-reaching effects. It is also important to pursue social causes only if you are truly passionate about them. If you are doing it just to ‘look good’ or because all your business friends are doing it, you are likely to cause harm to your business reputation and possibly enter into arrangements that harm the charity as well (e.g. if you end your support, it can affect the long term effectiveness of that charity). An important note: do not ever use tragedies, disasters or crisis situations to promote your business. You need to be extremely careful about offers that benefit you far more than the charity and that look like you are being opportunistic. By all means, if you are genuinely assisting a social cause, do so. But be very careful about your motivations and consider whether your support is better done quietly.
G
etting ready for end of the financial year, doesn’t have to be a stressful time if you are operating a small business. It can and should be an opportunity to review the business for the year and to do some much needed accounting ‘housekeeping’ to ensure you meet all your taxation obligations. Given your annual income tax return won’t be due at least until October 31, now is a good time to revisit some other tax issues. Some things to remember include: • Superannuation • Asset purchases – buying equipment • Employees – PAYG and payment summaries • GST/BAS Superannuation: Are you or your employees making extra Super contributions? There are strict rules about how much Super can be contributed in each year utilising the concessional tax rates, and for amounts to be included in the cap for the current year. The payments actually need to be received and processed by
the Super fund by June 30. Asset purchases: Small businesses can take advantage of the immediate depreciation available for business assets below $20,000. If it is almost time to upgrade or expand part of your business it may be worthwhile getting in before June 30 to claim the instant deduction and get the tax back in the current financial year. Employees: You need to give each of your employees their annual PAYG payment summary no later than July 14. They need this so that they can complete their own income tax returns. You also need to send the annual PAYG payment summary statement to the ATO by August 14. GST/BAS: Generally businesses with turnover less than $75,000 per year don’t need to charge or be registered for GST. Now is a good time to look ahead to consider whether your expected turnover will exceed the $75,000 and determine whether you need to be registered. This is not an extensive list and in any case should be reviewed with your accountant, to ensure you have covered everything off.

t would be a reasonable assumption that Aussie singer Dami Im’s life post Eurovision would be pretty hectic. But Dami’s recent focus hasn’t been on her music career, but on the African nation of Uganda. The 2013 winner of ‘The X Factor’ started sponsoring children through Compassion Australia when she was 17 and now, along with her husband Noah, the couple sponsor eight children in total. Dami’s planned trip to Uganda was made before she found out about Eurovision and there was no doubt in her mind that she would stick to the commitment she made to six-year-old Jovia. “I did get people telling me that it’s not the best thing to do and they tried to convince me out of it saying that it’s not the right time for you to be helping other people but I didn’t even consider those suggestions,” Dami said. “I just knew that’s what I wanted to do and I guess I wanted to bring all the attention I was getting from Eurovision and direct it towards people like Jovia who need attention.” It was a decision that Dami is very happy she made, having had the chance to experience a part of the world she’d never seen before.
“It was my very first time going to Africa and it was eye opening for me,” Dami said. “Uganda was so beautiful and a lot greener than I thought it was going to be in my mind. “It was such a beautiful country, but the conditions the kids were living in wasn’t so great.” Dami’s Eurovision performance earned her second place and a whole legion of new fans. In fact it was her fans, known as the ‘Dami Army’, that helped secure Dami’s place in the competition. “I have really great, devoted fans who have been supporting me for three years,” she said. “They really wanted me to do Eurovision when they found out that Australia was going to be in it. “They just kept pushing and pressing and campaigning everywhere. “After two years of doing that SBS heard their voice.” Dami’s focus for the rest of the year is on Australia, with her ‘Yesterday Once More’ national tour heading out west next month for a show at the Rooty Hill RSL. The tour will help promote her latest album ‘Classic Carpenters’, which features a track list full of The Carpenters’ biggest hits. “My parents were big fans of The Carpenters and they used to play their songs to me when I was little,” Dami said.
“They’re such beautiful tunes with amazing heartfelt lyrics, and Karen Carpenter’s voice is so amazing. “Everyone loves The Carpenters’ songs with Karen’s voice on them, she had a very unique tone and a lot deeper tone than my own voice. “I felt that I wanted to carry the feel of what she did but not copy it at all.” Dami’s other focus, besides the tour and
her new album, is on getting more music out to her legions of new fans. “I’m hoping to release new music when I can, which will be released not just in Australia but across the world.” Dami Im will be performing at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, July 30 at 8pm. Tickets are $20-$40. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www. rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

DVD Concussion
Rated M // KATE REID Will Smith returns to the screen this week with the release of the biographical drama ‘Concussion’. ‘Concussion’ is based on the true story of Dr Bennet Omalu (Will Smith), a forensic neuropathologist who was the first person to discover the existence of chronic trauma encephalopathy, a neurological deterioration found in former NFL players who had experienced repeated brain trauma. After publishing his findings on the disease – which is similar to Alzheimer’s disease – Dr Bennet finds himself fighting against the powerful NFL institution who initially dismiss his claims. But Dr. Omalu doesn’t give up,
pushing to ensure his findings become known to the public, and to help bring awareness to players about the risks involved in the game. The film also stars Alec Baldwin as former Steelers team doctor Julian Bailes. Though reviews for the film have been mixed, Will Smith has been praised for his performance which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes and Actor of the Year at the Hollywood Film Awards. ‘Concussion’ was produced by Ridley Scott and is based on an expose called ‘Game Brain’ by Jeanne Marie Laskas, which was published in GQ magazine.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
Rated M • PS4 and Xbox One // KATE REID The critically acclaimed ‘Mirror’s Edge’ is back with the release of the reboot ‘Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’ which is out now on PS4 and XBox One. Fans of the action-adventure game will once again take on the character of Faith in this dystopian world where a totalitarian group of corporations control society. Set in the beautiful city of Glass, players will experience Faith’s journey from young woman to hero as she takes a stand against oppression and the power and control of the ruling elite. Gamers will have the chance to explore the inner workings of the city and the areas surrounding it, while experiencing enhanced game play through more fluid movement and first person combat. Reviews for the game have been mostly positive, so if you enjoyed ‘Mirror’s Edge’ be sure to grab your copy of ‘Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’ now.
Believe it or not but it’s been 20 years since ‘Independence Day’ was released. While it may have appeared that this would be one blockbuster that wouldn’t get a sequel, this week sees the release of the long awaited follow up, ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’.
While Will Smith is notably absent from the film, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are back, and this time they’re joined by Aussie star Liam Hemsworth. The plot once again puts humans at war with alien invaders. 20 years after the events of the first film, humanity has used the abandoned alien technology from the first attack to create their own advanced defence system to protect the Earth. Unfortunately they’re not quite prepared for the scale of attack they face when the alien invaders once again try
to take over. Standing in their way is a group of brave men and women including United States pilot Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) and scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum). ‘Independence Day’ has become a classic in the blockbuster genre and there’s no doubt fans will have high hopes for the sequel. ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ is now screening at Hoyts Penrith. Ê Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea and former ‘American Idol’ star Adam Lambert have been confirmed as new judges on Channel Seven’s ‘The X Factor’. Iggy and Adam’s addition is a huge coup for Seven as it will add plenty of edge to what will be a new-look judging panel. Also returning to the show from last season is Guy Sebastian. Let’s hope the new judging panel gels with viewers at home.

Ê Just when we thought ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ was over for good, HBO has confirmed that a ninth season, featuring creator and star of the series Larry David, is in the works. LIFE & STYLE RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Over the last two months, have you felt as if you’ve been walking through treacle, treading water … or even going backwards? Has your sexual mojo gone missing? Or has a major project backfired? Thank goodness your ruler Mars finally moves forwards from Thursday and you’ll start to feel more positive, passionate and proactive about love, life and the Universe. For some lucky Rams – an unexpected gift or freebie comes your way, via a friend or family member.

HOROSCOPES
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The pace picks up from Thursday onwards, when the planets stimulate your communication and relationship zones. So the latter part of the week is the time to socialise with family and friends as you participate in some stimulating conversations. Social media is also favoured and the more creative your approach, the more positive the response will be. But resist the temptation to be a possessive or bossy Bull on Friday. Try some soulful Zen detachment instead.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Attached Twins – are you taking your relationship responsibilities seriously? Saturn demands that you shape up or ship out. Some Twins will tentatively revisit an old romance – but do you really want to do that dance again? Mercury (your power planet) shifts into your cash zone from June 30 through until July 14. So it’s a terrific time to improve your financial literacy through study or via the mentorship of someone who is smart and savvy with money.

Are you running on empty? From Monday until Wednesday, strive to get the ratio right between being on top of things at work, while still having time to reflect and recharge your batteries. Balance is the key. The momentum picks up from Thursday onwards, when the planets help boost your energy and rev up your motivation. But relations with a loved one or work colleague could be problematic on Friday.
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
A relationship with a family member is about to improve in leaps and bounds, as Mars finally zooms forwards in your domestic zone (from Thursday onwards). On the weekend, don your detective cap as you dig up a mystery, uncover a secret or research a topic that has always fascinated you. The super Sun/Neptune aspect also stimulates your imagination and increases your creative Cat juices. As Madonna (a fellow Leo) sings, it’s time to “Express Yourself!”
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Saturn is reversing through your sign, which can make you feel as if you have the worries of the world on your shoulders. This week, take a step back and view your life from a more positive perspective. And Mars moves forwards in your volunteer zone. So think up some dynamic ways that you help those who are less fortunate – whether it’s locally, nationally or internationally. Be inspired by Princess Diana, “Everyone has the potential to give something back”.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Progress has been slow (particularly at school, college, work or online) but that will change when Mars moves forwards. There’s no substitute for being thoroughly prepared so make sure you are ready to pounce, from Thursday onwards. Relations with a child, teenager or friend may be strained on Friday though. The more you try to organise them, the worse things will be. They are looking for encouragement and solutions, rather than criticism – however ‘constructive’ it is.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Most communication problems arise from a lack of meaningful connection. As the week progresses, the planets encourage you to talk through issues with a loved one. Then you’ll see the current situation from a much more balanced perspective. On the weekend, slow down and smell the roses! Take the time to look at things in a sensitive and compassionate way. It’s also a good idea to nurture your international contacts, as you spread your social net far and wide.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Mars finally moves forwards in your money zone, but don’t spoil your future prospects by being rash with cash. Slow down and think carefully before you make an expensive purchase. Expect a fortuitous opportunity to appear out of the blue around Friday. But you must be proactive and grab it when it comes along, or it will promptly pass you by. The weekend is the perfect time to find a solution to a sensitive relationship issue in a kind and compassionate way.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Have you been treading water at work? Action-planet Mars finally moves forwards in your career zone, so professional and business opportunities are set to improve. And dealing with male colleagues, customers and clients in a dynamic way will lead to positive outcomes. If you’re having money problems then a creative approach could turn things around. Joint ventures are particularly favoured, as you boost cash flow with a more cooperative approach.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Motivation planet Mars finally stops reversing through your sign. So Thursday onwards is the time to stop sulking and start being proactive. Getting a complicated personal problem sorted out is a good place to start. Friday’s stars boost your magnetism – and your controlling streak. The more you try to manipulate others, the more difficult the day will be. The weekend is wonderful for social events and international connections.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Your creativity and intuition are firing this week. If your inner voice tells you something isn’t the real deal, then make sure you act on that information. Mars moves forwards which increases your motivation and activates your adventurous side. So it’s the perfect time for Pisceans to take plenty of positive action! Your motto for the moment is from activist Helen Keller, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”

mongst the fastest growing wines in terms of new plantings in Australia is Tempranillo, an easy-drinking medium-bodied and fruity red that was first planted here in the early 1900s, waned, and was resurrected again with more serious intent around the 1980s. Today this native of Spain is grown in all major Australian regions by some 200 or more producers, with one to look for being the NSW Riverina’s Calabria Family Wines’ Cool Climate Series that’s made from fruit from the Hilltops area near Young. Full of varietal cherry and plum fruit flavours, a touch of leatheriness and with a mild clove spiciness, it’s an excellent example of just why Tempranillo has really taken off amongst drinkers in the past five years or so. Winemaker Bill Calabria used only hand-harvested fruit for this drop that’s so well-priced at just $15. Enjoy it simply with tapas or other light snacks, or main courses of anything from chorizo sausages to roast chicken or rack of lamb (as it is in its home country Spain) or even think more-Mexican tacos, nachos or burritos. One to note: We’ve long had a fondness for Sauvignon Blanc, and while most think of it as a purely summerdrinking wine, there are plenty of reasons to put it on the table with winter-time meals too. Or simply enjoy it on its own. A full-of-flavour Sauv Blanc that’s currently on the shelves is Blossom Hill’s 2015 (pictured) made from fruit sourced from across South Eastern Australia. All about crisp and zesty fresh citrus flavours, this one’s nicely accompanied by tropical and passionfruit aromas.
Leading Le L Leadin e local greenkeepers and golf course superintendents have endorsed Windsor Turf’s Kikuyu - Fescue blend as arguably the best performing lawn turf for the Blue Mountains and its regions. Here are some reasons why: • Vibrant colour • Full sun or semi shade • Easier to lay • Quick establishment • Rich soft texture • Hard wearing

Roller derby is on the way up in Mountains p.32 NATHAN TAYLOR
hen 18-year-old Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary told his father, Ivan, he would be debuting in first grade that weekend, the former Penrith coach uttered four words before congratulating him. “Are you kidding me?” That reaction from his father was expected by young Cleary who himself was also coming to terms with being told he’ll make his NRL debut against the likes of Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and the rest of the Melbourne Storm crew. “Dad was in shock. We both were in shock,” Cleary admitted to the Record. “I couldn’t believe it and when I told him he laughed and said ‘are you kidding me?’… but he was really proud and so was Mum.” While Cleary openly admits he never would’ve seen first grade this early in his career under his father’s reign as Panthers coach, he’s happy things are working out well with the man that replaced his old man at the helm – Anthony Griffin. Just a matter of months ago, whilst playing in the Holden Cup, Cleary was given

the opportunity by coach Griffin to train with the NRL squad. In that time Cleary made just one appearance in the Intrust Super Premiership before being ‘trusted’ by his father’s successor to lead the top squad around. “When Hook told me I would be training with the boys I thought it was just for experience, but after a few injuries and some other things that went on, I felt the chance was coming,” Cleary said. “I definitely didn’t expect it this early on but I’m really grateful for the opportunity.” While Dad, Ivan, may not be hanging around Panthers HQ anymore, he’s still very much in his son’s life at home. Cleary said he and his father have a great relationship on and off the paddock. “Dad and I always have banter at home but he’s been good though, he’s helped me a lot so far this year and throughout my whole life,” he said. “Dad likes to tip me up on goal kicking, he thought he was a pretty good goal kicker back in his day. He’s also helped me in other parts of my game too.” Cleary played his first home game as an NRL star on Friday night, and will this weekend battle the Wests Tigers. Cleary signed a contract extension earlier this month until the end of 2019.

Roller derby smackdown he Blue Mountains roller derby team, The Free Sisters, travelled to Adelaide this month for some hard hitting roller derby action in the world’s largest event, The Great Southern Slam. Taking place over three days, the battle saw 43 teams from Australia and New Zealand come together at Adelaide Showground. On the first day of the competition The Free Sisters were up against The Rough Cuts from Diamond Valley in Victoria, who unfortunately took the win over the Mountains team with 268 points to 148. The next day The Free Sisters took on the Cabernet Savages from Margaret River in Western Australia. The Free Sisters led a fast-paced bout from early on and kept their collective cool to win 161 to 100. “The win against the Savages wasn’t enough to put the Free Sisters through to the next round,” Blue Mountains Roller Derby President, Samantha Hajinakitas said. “But the one win/one loss result was an improvement from their last Great Southern Slam tournament and they look forward to going for two wins and some finals action at the next

Local roller derby team The Free Sisters in action at The Great Southern Slam in Adelaide Slam in 2018.” The team are currently planning for October when they will compete at the Eastern Region Roller Derby on the Central Coast. This derby brings together the best female teams in the eastern region of Australia for an all out smackdown. Roller derby has exploded in Australia in recent years, with leagues now in every state and more women continuing to join in on the action.
The full contact sport has a reputation for being entertaining with a lot of passion being expressed from players in each game. For the Blue Mountains Roller Derby League, it isn’t just a sport, for these girls roller derby is a way of life. For anyone interested in joining the Blue Mountains Roller Derby League, they’re holding a new skater information session at 7.15pm next Monday, July 4 at the Katoomba Aquatic Centre.
