A Springwood florist nabbed mid-range drink driving has appealed for leniency for the sake of her fledgling business and staff members. Leslie-Anne Grantham’s lawyer said his client’s business would suffer greatly if she was unable to attend Flemington Markets three to four times a week to hand-pick her blooms, which gave her a “competitive advantage”. Penrith Local Court heard the defendant and her partner had consumed a fivecourse degustation meal with matching wines before she failed a random breath test. She was convicted, stripped of her licence for six months and fined $1,000.
Community shows its frustration More than 500 residents gather to express anger at airport plans ERIN MAMO
lue Mountains City Council is calling for action against the proposed Western Sydney Airport’s final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). On Saturday, October 15 the Council hosted a community meeting at Glenbrook Park to present their concerns and hear residents’ issues over the final EIS that was released in September. At the meeting, Mayor Mark Greenhill said the Government’s response to concerns raised in the submissions to the draft EIS released previously does not address the fundamental concerns of the Council or the community. “The revised EIS and draft Airport Plan was supposed to have been updated to take account of the comments received during the community consultation period, the problem is it hasn’t,” Cr Greenhill said. “The latest report is strong on rhetoric and short on facts, including, remarkably, that no flight paths have been determined.” The meeting at the park drew over 500 residents of the Blue Mountains as well as residents from Penrith, Blacktown and the Hills area. Cr Greenhill said the meeting was an

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill addresses the public meeting important conversation that the community had to have now that the final EIS is with the Minister for the Environment, Josh Frydenberg, for determination in November. Cr Greenhill proposed at the meeting to work with the Mayor of Blacktown City Council on a day of action with the communities of Blue Mountains and western Sydney to make sure everyone’s
voices are heard before November. “The voice of the community remains loud and clear in its opposition to the airport proposal,” Cr Greenhill said. “The key issues of aircraft noise, flight paths, traffic, transport, the environment, public health and potentially negative economic impacts have, once again, been ill considered and poorly addressed in the final EIS.”

A Dargan woman who knocked her husband to the ground with their car after a heated argument has had her three-year driving ban overturned. Julie Pender faced Penrith District Court earlier this month to appeal the severity of her mandatory disqualification after she was convicted of driving furiously causing grievous bodily harm last month. The court heard the appellant and her husband of 21 years had gotten into an argument on their way to work, culminating in Ms Pender being distressed at work. Wanting to return home, she collected their car from her husband’s work, striking him as she left the carpark causing minor abrasions. The appeal was upheld and her conviction set aside in lieu of her entering a six-month good behaviour bond.

On The Record
The path to home ownership is more difficult than ever, and ordering smashed avocados at local cafes isn’t totally to blame, but Bernard Salt’s column in The Australian did have a point. His controversial piece earlier this month, which has attracted major criticism from all corners, suggested that if young wannabe home owners stopped brunching on $22 smashed avocados at
trendy cafes, they could improve their home ownership chances. Truth is that figures suggest that even with strong savings plans, home ownership is close to impossible without help from parents or other sources. But Salt’s point was that youngsters often don’t help their cause when they’re spotted spending money on what most would deem frivolous things.
So many ‘millennials’ bemoan the current state of the housing market, yet most will have the latest iPhone or Samsung phone, which can cost upwards of $1000. Eating out is seen as the norm, not an occasional treat. The blame is not totally on young people’s spending habits but it does play a role in the overall debate.

Firies warn of gas bottle explosions Locals urged to be safe around the barbie this summer after a spate of dangerous LPG explosions ERIN MAMO
ire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) are urging residents to check their barbecues after an increase in gas explosions in the past week. Throughout the state, FRNSW has attended nine LPG gas bottle explosions in the last week, which in some cases have caused serious injuries and extensive property damage. FRNSW Commissioner, Greg Mullins, said the recent figures are alarming. “I encourage people not to be complacent when firing up their barbecue this season,” Mr Mullins said. “Simple precautions and a little bit of planning and care helps to avoid accidents, prevent bushfires and property damage. “When using the barbecue, set it up in an area that has been cleared of vegetation, on a firm level base, sheltered from the wind and away from garden sheds and fences.” While none of the nine recent gas bottle explosions occurred in the Blue Mountains area, Zone Commander for the Blue Mountains, Lindsay West, said general barbecue maintenance is important for every home to avoid costly, and poten-

tially deadly, mishaps. “Most of the incidents we have attended in the past have been those where a barbecue has been neglected,” Mr West said. “All barbecues need to be kept clean and the gas cylinder should be checked and certified every ten years.” To check for a gas leakage FRNSW recommend that you spray soapy water on any suspect connection or hose and watch for bubbles. If a gas leak occurs and it is safe to do so, shut off the cylinder immediately and allow for any gas to disperse. If you are in doubt about whether there is a leak, turn off the gas and have a licensed gas fitter inspect the hose or connection for any faults. To avoid future incidents, FRNSW recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the correct start up and shut down procedures for your barbecue. After use, make sure the gas is turned off at the cylinder and keep a supply of water close by and if possible a fire extinguisher. Also, never put a flammable liquid on a barbecue and always use the right type of gas by checking the data plate. Barbecue fire safety fact sheets can be downloaded from www.fire.nsw.gov.au.

Open day and drawing comp as the Historical Society turns 70 ERIN MAMO
he Blue Mountains Historical Society is turning 70 and will celebrate at Tarella Cottage Museum in Wentworth Falls. This weekend, Tarella Cottage will play host to an open day and a drawing competition to members of the public. The Historical Society’s Publicity Officer, Robyne Ridge, said the event will offer guests the chance to see what life was like 100 years ago. “The day aims to showcase Tarella Cottage and the history behind it,” Ms Ridge said. “An older audience will be able to appreciate the interesting cottage and its unique, historic attributes, while a younger audience can see what life was like before TV and other technology existed.” Situated at 99 Blaxland Road, Tarella Cottage was built in the late 1800s by John McLaughlin, a Sydney Solicitor, who used the cottage as a holiday getaway for his family of five during hot summers. Mr McLaughlin’s daughter Beryl left the cottage and its land to the Historical Society when she passed away in 1988, two months short of her 100th birthday. The building will be the focus of the drawing competition which will be open to all ages and abilities.

Bringing communities together Journalism student Jemima Morris investigates the key role growers markets play in the Mountains JEMIMA MORRIS
pringwood Growers Market is just one of many weekend markets held in the beautiful Blue Mountains. From Leura’s First Sunday Markets to the Blackheath Growers Market, there is always something on. But why is it that markets are such an important part of the Blue Mountains community? According to Owner of Unplanned Bakery, Sarah English, markets serve to create an even stronger sense of community. “The markets bring everyone out to socialise and support local and small businesses, creating great community spirit,” she said. Foodies are also drawn to the markets, with many locals attending numerous sites in a quest to purchase their favourite fresh produce and products. With over 50 stalls of local growers and produce from the top of the Mountains to the bottom, offering everything from fresh food and organic meat to veggies and vegan sweets, you are bound to find something you love. Quirky stalls, such as a Kids Planting
S
Customers browse the stalls at the Springwood Growers Market Corner, where every child could plant a veggie plant and get some gardening gloves to take home with them, are also common sights at the region’s weekend markets. Renee Tilley, Owner of Paudha Healing, a natural plant-derived and cruelty free skin care range, said having such a wide variety of options encourages shoppers to try new things and educate themselves
and their children on what they buy and what they eat. “There is much more awareness nowadays of what people put in and on their bodies,” she said. Renee and her husband handmake all their products from their home based about one kilometre away from the market location. Since starting her business in April,
Renee said the markets have dramatically influenced her reputation and allowed her to build a strong customer base. A lot of the stallholders do not have shop fronts and therefore rely on the markets to raise awareness of their brands and to gain loyal customers. Sarah said customers now expected to see certain stalls when they attended the markets. “Many customers come to the markets expecting to see particular stalls and sometimes come specifically for a particular product,” she said. Blue Mountains residents have always had a reputation for being organic, earthloving people which has no doubt contributed to the markets’ success. And while business is booming for stall holders, the weekend markets also boost the purse strings of local shop fronts in the town where the market is being held, with extra foot traffic and more families browsing the local stores. Springwood Growers Markets are held every fourth Sunday of the month at the Blue Mountains Theatre and Community Hub, 104-108 Macquarie Road. To see when there is a weekend market in your neck of the woods, contact Blue Mountains City Council.

Community
From the Mountains to the mighty Murray ERIN MAMO
tudents from Blue Mountains Grammar School (BMGS) will take to their kayaks this November to compete in the annual Massive Murray Paddle in Victoria. The Massive Murray Paddle is a five-day paddle race that sees local community groups, including schools, race along the Murray River for up to nine hours a day to raise money for community-driven programs. This year, 22 students and 18 parents from the Wentworth Falls school will compete in the marathon, using seven double kayaks and one single kayak to propel themselves along Australia’s longest river. Parent, Gregg Borschmann, who is responsible for the school’s involvement in the five-day paddle, said the event aims to connect people to the river and country. “The race aims to develop the connection between the people participating and the river and land that surrounds it,” Mr Borschmann said. “The best thing about the race for me is seeing what it does for the kids, to watch them grow and learn from it.” This will be the third time that students
S
from BMGS have participated in the event. And while in recent years they have donated the money they have raised to the Heart Foundation and YMCA, this year the students and parents have decided that the money will go towards two state-ofthe-art kayaks that will be used in the race and then donated to the school for their outdoor education program. So far, the students have raised a total of $4000 through an Everyday Hero fundraising page. Their aim is to raise another $2000 to cover the cost of the kayaks. In the lead up to the event, Mr Borschmann said the most important thing for the kids is to feel comfortable in the kayaks and to get used to being in them on the water. “The most important thing the kids need to learn to do before the race is to just sit in the boat comfortably and not fall out,” he said. Once the race starts, students and parents could be in their kayaks for up to nine hours a day in challenging conditions. Over the next six weeks, the BMGS team will train every week at Wentworth Falls Lakes and then have a special training session at Sydney Harbour the week before the event.

Halloween
Lithgow goes spooky for Halloween • National record attempt part of celebrations • Thousands expected to attend popular event ERIN MAMO
L
ithgow is set to become a little spooky on Saturday when the city holds its annual Halloween celebra-
tions. Organised by Lithgow City Council, ‘Halloween ‘16’ will see the main shopping area of Lithgow transformed into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with themed precincts and non-stop entertainment, including a Vivid-style lighting display. The main draw card of the event will be the national record attempt at the largest number of costumed people dancing to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ The dance-off will be led by internationally-recognised King of Pop impersonator, Jason Jackson, who will dazzle the crowds with a stand-out performance and numerous costume changes throughout the evening. Lithgow City Council Tourism Manager, Kellie Barrow, said while entertainment will be provided for the crowds, everyone is encouraged to dress in costume and get into the spirit of the occasion by taking part in the ‘Thriller’ dance-off. “In Lithgow, we don’t just watch the entertainment, we’re part of it,” Ms
Barrow said. “This is a reflection of how we live every day, forging our own path rather than allowing others to decide the future for us.’’ The Lithgow event promises to have something for everyone, with free events in public spaces and ticketed events at private venues. The shenanigans will kick off at 4pm, with entertainment set up on the Main Stage near Bridge Street and the Community Stage set up just past Sandford Avenue. Local entertainment acts that will perform on the day include, Side Car, La Belle School of Dance, Rhythm Stix, Smash 75, Street Chase, Phantoms Dream, Arachnid Invasion and the Frank N Furter show and the Rocky Horror with Dave Webb. There will also be rides for all ages, a fashion parade, dancing, markets and food stalls, the ever popular skull auction in the library and, of course, Australia’s biggest Trick or Treat lolly grab at accredited main street shops at 5pm. To learn the dance moves so you can be a part of the dance-off on the day or for more information about the event, visit www.halloween.lithgow.com.

FOOD
The warmer months are a great time of year for food and it doesn’t get much better than alfresco spring/summer dining. Of course when it comes to barbecuing we’re all aware of the usual suspects, like a snag or steak, but there’s a range of different meal options that can help bring a little variety into your next grilling session. Pizza: In my opinion a homemade pizza tastes so much better when cooked on the BBQ. You get a crispy crust and perfectly cooked toppings, with just a hint of char.
Great meal ideas for the barbie

The best bit is that it’s so simple to do. Grab a pizza stone, create a pizza using your favourite toppings (prawns are a great option for this time of the year) and then cook it in a hooded barbecue. Fruits: Summer is a fantastic time for fruits, which are made even tastier when cooked on the grill. Peach, banana, nectarine
or pineapple, no matter which one you choose they all develop a lovely sweet caramelised coating when barbecued. It’s the perfect way to up your fruit intake and makes a great dessert option alongside a scoop of ice cream. Seafood: When it comes to BBQ meats it’s normally beef or lamb that get the most attention. But if you’re after something a little different, with the added benefit of less saturated fat and more healthy Omega 3 fats, then seafood makes a great alternative. Try some garlic prawn skewers, barbecued whole fish with chilli and lime, or barbecued calamari. Halloumi: Are you one of those people who can’t live without the gooey deliciousness of cheese? If you answered with an enthusiastic “yes then you’ll probably want to throw some halloumi on the barbie. With a high melting point, halloumi is perfect for grilling, takes no time at all to cook, and can be eaten as a side dish with a squeeze of lemon. Add some grilled capsicum, olives and hummus to create a delicious little Mediterranean tasting platter in place of the usual cheese and biscuits.

Tinker was surrendered by her owners at just 2 years of age and she is now looking for a family to call her own forever. She is a very sweet girl that would like to be kept active in her home and also have someone around most of the day as she doesn’t like being left alone. Tinker would benefit from some basic training with her new family so she can blossom into the best dog she can be.
After being found in the Penrith area and taken to the shelter this guy hasn’t been lucky enough to find a home yet. He has now completed his impound time and would love to find a caring Forever Home with a family that can offer him all a feline deserves. He isn’t picky, just a nice window to sit in to soak up the sun and some chin scratches! If this sounds like you please come in and meet him...
Mufassa was surrendered by his owners through no fault of his own and is now looking for a new place to call home. He is a very sweet boy that will give you head bumps and always enjoys a pat. He is only 3 years old and has his whole life ahead of him. He is looking for a home either as an only cat or with another - he isn’t really worried. If you can offer Mufassa a home please contact the shelter.
Check out the smile on this girl, even though she is at the shelter she is happy and hoping that the right family will come along any day now and take her home. With a great personality and a happy-go-lucky attitude this girl would suit most homes. She would love a family that can take her for a walk daily and keep up with her training as well as offer her quiet time inside of a night.
Sadly this guy has been overlooked for 3 weeks now and is desperate for a loving home. He has the 3 traits that a shelter dog gets overlooked for, he Brindle, he’s big and he’s a staffy x. I bet if you were to come and meet him you would want to add him to your family! He’s a gentle boy that sits for treats and takes them from you nicely.
Just look at that face, have you ever seen a dog so handsome! With a huge smile and a great personality this fella would make a family very happy! He is only just over a year old and would love to spend the rest of his life with an active family that can keep him busy but also enjoy quiet time as well.
We always recommend bringing your own dogs to the shelter to meet any of the shelter dogs.
The shelter is in need of toys, blankets (not doonas or pillows though), treats and coats for large dogs. Please contact the shelter if you can help.

Now you might think one or two per cent seems rather minor and nothing to be very concerned about, but think again. Superannuation is a very long term investment and differences of as little as one per cent per annum can alter final balances dramatically. I actually looked at a number of calculations and just a one per cent increase
in your rate of earnings can add more than $100k to your final balance over a 30 year period. So these small differences early on can actually mean big differences at retirement time. Unfortunately trying to get a one per cent increase in your investment return consistently is impossible. But there is another way. All super funds have fees, some more than others, and this is a very good place to start when you want to improve your final balance. I have listed the most common types of fees levied below: Administration Fee – dollar amount charged monthly Management Expense Ratio (MER) – percentage applied to your total balance Contribution Fee – a percentage of each contribution Other fees – switching fee, withdrawal fee, transaction fee, adviser fee, performance fee, etc Your job now is to ring your fund and ask them exactly what fees they charge you. Use the above list as a guide, and write it all down. Once you have done this, look at some other funds with similar investment profiles and find out what fees they may charge. You can work out the rest! A little time spent now can reward you greatly in 20 years time, so start ringing.

Yesterday I was looking at performance comparisons for superannuation funds. By the way, it’s a good idea to have a look at these yourself, just to see how your fund performs compared to others. In fact, do this comparison at least annually; making contributions to a ‘dog’ of a fund for ten years before you suddenly realise it, is a massive waste of time. Anyway, back to our comparison tables. At first glance most of the funds perform pretty much the same, with most being within a couple of per cent of each other.

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the things you can think up if only you try!” (Dr Seuss) Most business owners have at some time, or quite regularly, dreamt up some amazing ideas. Most of us don’t have the resources or the time to bring all those ideas to fruition. But how do you move from the lightbulb moment that appears when you’re in the shower or lying on the beach, to a tangible possibility for your business? The biggest mistake business owners can make when they have a great idea is to share the vision with too many people. Chances are, at least one of those people won’t share that vision, or will only be able to evaluate it through the lens of their experience. Choose wisely who to consult, and only do so when you truly need advice, not just because you are excited and want to share your idea with everyone. Coupled with ‘oversharing’ is the mistake of letting yourself get too excited about an idea. The excitement itself is perfectly fine, but it can lead to
making decisions that you otherwise wouldn’t. Keep the passion and initial excitement, but ensure that you don’t lose perspective in the process. While you should be careful not to make rash decisions when you embark on developing a new idea, it is also a good idea not to wait too long to take your first steps. It is likely that selfdoubt will creep in and you will start questioning whether the idea is feasible. Over-thinking can squash creativity and motivation. Give your idea time to settle and explore the possibilities, and then if you know you’re on to a good thing, start working on it! And then of course, any business owner who has been operating for more than a year or so, understands that a great idea requires tremendous effort to develop it into the final product or service. While your idea might be fantastic, the idea is not the end result: it is just the beginning. To end with another Dr Seuss quote: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”
T
You can’t get an iPhone 7 if you had an iPhone 5 stolen. Similarly, if you are covered for $50,000 and you lose $5,000 due to fire you will only receive $5,000. The principle is that you do not gain any financial or asset advantage from the insurance restoration. In order for the insurer to cover you, you must make full disclosure when you apply for the cover. Full disclosure means detailing all the relevant information regarding your existing circumstances as they relate to the type of cover sought. If you do not give full information, and the policy is approved, then the insurance company may not allow any claims you make in relation to the covered event. If you operate your private car for business services, or if you use your home for business purposes then you need to contact your insurer so that you are covered whilst conducting business. If you want to review your insurance, or seek the services of an insurance broker, then call one of our advisers. We will be happy to help you.
he government’s business site (business.gov.au) is an excellent resource for small businesses and has a well written section that introduces the topic of insurance. I recommend all business people to have a look at it. However, it is not comprehensive and quite simplistic. So let’s fill in some of the gaps. Insurance is where you enter into a contract with an insurance company and that organisation pays an amount should an adverse event occur that causes loss or damage. Using risk assessment and economic modelling, the insurance company can estimate the risk of a damaging event occurring and set a premium for you and others based on that risk and other factors. By covering a lot of people for a damaging event, the insurer will have enough money to compensate those people who have suffered damage. The theory behind insurance is that you will only be paid the amount that restores your wealth to what it was before the event occurred.

Back on the road and ready to rock KATE REID

3 years is a long time between albums, but for New Zealand rockers Mi-Sex it seems it was well worth the wait. With their previous album – ‘Where Do They Go?’ – being released in the early 1980s, founding member and keyboardist Murray Burns is understandably excited about the band’s new release ‘Not From Here’. “Three of us run studios for a living so we thought it’d be great to work on our own songs rather than helping somebody else with their songs,” Murray explained.
18
“Once we got into the swing of it we started having a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to doing another one.” Since 2011 the band – who are best known for their hits ‘Computer Games’ and ‘People’ – have been joined by former Noiseworks member Steve Balbi as lead vocalist. Balbi collaborated on the songwriting process along with Burns and Colin Bayley. “Steve contributed a lot of the lyrics, he’s a very thoughtful kind of guy and he’s always got an interesting slant on whatever he’s singing about so he’s quite poetic with his lyrics,” Murray said. “Well, poetic with attitude,” he laughed.
Mi-Sex will be touring their new album over the next few months, including a stop off at the Ettamogah Hotel in Kellyville Ridge next month. It’s a potentially scary prospect, putting out new music into a scene that’s vastly different to the way it was in the 80s. But it’s been the support of audiences at their live shows that encouraged the band to release the new album. “We’ve been doing two of the songs on stage and I guess that was the reason why we felt good about doing the record because those two songs got a really good response so it sort of gave us the impetus to carry on,” Murray said. After suffering a stroke on stage in
2012 – from which he has now fully recovered – Murray understands exactly how important it is to make the most of the opportunities you’re given. “I definitely appreciate my life and my friends,” he said. “I took six weeks to learn how to walk and talk again, so I had plenty of time to think about it.” The band is now preparing to introduce themselves to a whole new era of fans. Mi-Sex will be performing at the Ettamogah Hotel in Kellyville Ridge on Saturday, November 5 at 7pm. Tickets are $34. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ettamogahhotel.com. au or call 9629 1130.

Independence Day 2: Resurgence Rated M // KATE REID
The aliens return with the release of the blockbuster sequel ‘Independence Day 2: Resurgence’ on Blu-Ray and DVD this week. While Will Smith is notably absent from the film, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are back, and this time they’re joined by Aussie star Liam Hemsworth. The plot once again puts humans at war with alien invaders. 20 years after the events of the first film, humanity has used the abandoned alien technology from the first attack to create their own advanced defence systems to protect Earth. Unfortunately they’re not quite prepared for the scale of attack they face when the alien invaders once again try to take over.
MUSIC
Standing in their way is a group of brave men and women including United States pilot Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) and scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum). Unfortunately ‘Independence Day 2: Resurgence’ didn’t receive particularly great feedback from the viewing audience, though popular movie review site Rotten Tomatoes did acknowledge the film as “visually impressive”. Regardless, if you’re a fan it’s worth checking out, even if just to satisfy your curiosity and to check out the big screen return of the always cool Jeff Goldblum. Grab your copy of ‘Independence Day 2: Resurgence’ in store or online now.
CINEMA Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Rated M // KATE REID
Kings of Leon
Walls // KATE REID Caleb and the rest of the Followill brothers are back this week with the release of their new album ‘Walls’. Opening with jangly guitars the first single ‘Waste A Moment’ has a big, beefy – and most importantly catchy – chorus that makes it perfect single fodder. The rest of the album lives up to its opener and though there’s a few sleepers in the group, it’s a mostly solid rock release. The only downside is that this album is probably not going to be as appealing to those who miss the dirty rock sound of 2003’s ‘Youth & Young Manhood’ and 2004’s ‘Aha Shake Heartbreak’. That being said, this is Kings of Leon’s seventh release and the band have managed to make consistently good albums, even if the sound has become more mainstream along the way. Kings of Leon recorded the album with producer Markus Dravs, who has worked with Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine and Coldplay. If you are a fan, this is well worth a listen. Grab your copy now!
Tom Cruise reprises his role as ex-military officer Jack Reacher in this week’s action thriller blockbuster. Based on the Jack Reacher novel series by Lee Child, the sequel is set four years after the events of the first film. Jack (Tom Cruise) returns to the head-
quarters of his old military unit but he finds himself in hot water when he is accused of a 16-year-old murder. To clear his name he must uncover the truth behind a government conspiracy. Along the way Jack also discovers a secret that will change his life forever. Tom Cruise is joined on screen by ‘How I Met You Mother’ star Cobie Smulders who plays the role of Susan Turner.
The original film ‘Jack Reacher’, while a box office hit around the world, received fairly average reviews from critics and movie goers. It is yet to be seen whether the sequel can improve on its predecessor. ‘Jack Reacher: Never Go Back’ is currently showing at Hoyts Penrith. Mercury (your power planet) shifts into strategic Scorpio until November 12. So it’s time to plough through paperwork, study online, research a project or tie up loose-ends. Communicating your thoughts and feelings to a lover, close friend or family member (in a direct and honest way) will get things off your chest and help the relationship move in a positive new direction. Be inspired by birthday great, Pablo Picasso: “One must act in painting as in life, directly.”
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
With party planets Venus and Jupiter linking up mid-week, it’s time to have fun, flirt, charm, socialise, create and collaborate. So jump in and make the most of it! Then Mercury and the New Moon indicate a major turnaround to do with money matters or self-esteem issues. Keep an open mind, as you absorb fresh financial information or road-test a new fashion or beauty trend. But remember … you are lovable for who you are (not what you look like or how much you earn).
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
It’s a wonderful week to zero in on your special talent, and make a promise to yourself that you will develop it to full capacity. As singer Katy Perry says, “Find out what your gift is and nurture it”. From Thursday onwards the Sun, Mercury and the New Moon propel you forward with stacks of magnetic Scorpio style. If you communicate clearly and creatively with others and dress to impress then you’ll make pleasing progress.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
With Venus visiting your sign and proactive Mars in your cash zone you have the capability to make big money. And the capacity and extravagance to spend it! So strive to show some restraint, otherwise you’ll go from princess to pauper in a flash. If you approach others with plenty of tact and charm on Wednesday, then your efforts will be generously rewarded. On Sunday night, take the time to relax and appreciate the power and promise of the magical New Moon.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Mighty Mars is charging through your sign, so don’t hesitate to grab lucky opportunities when they appear. If you maintain motivation and are passionately proactive, then your life will start to move in dynamic new directions. So your motto for the moment is from Pablo Picasso, “Action is the foundational key to all success”. Plus, with the New Moon and Mercury activating your hopes and wishes zone, it’s also time to review and re-imagine some of your aspirations.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
With the planets stimulating your career zone, start thinking about strategic ways to create work opportunities and maximise your professional potential. So it’s the perfect week to get feedback from your boss, clients or customers. Or look for a new job. But you may also have to bite the bullet and criticise a colleague, sack an employee, ditch a struggling project or resign from your current position. Then you’ll be free to start with a completely fresh slate next week.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Mid-week Venus/Jupiter vibes are wonderful for work and money. But don’t unintentionally mislead someone by giving them mixed signals. Do your best to keep communication crystal clear! On the weekend, prepare for a fresh start in an area involving legal matters, education, commerce, travel or international connections. The best time to take a holiday is sometime between Sunday and November 12. So start booking ASAP!

WINE LIST
DAVID ELLIS
Drop of courage
I
f you’ve a sense for adventure in your pursuit of wine drinking enjoyment, a particularly intriguing drop to search out was released just recently under a Samphire label by Cape Jaffa Winery on SA’s Limestone Coast. Interesting because while predominantly Chardonnay with a little Gewurztraminer and Viognier, this one was made more like it was a red than a white, including not only unusually fermenting the fruit on skins, but doing so for six months… something that its makers Derek and Anna Hooper say “called for courage and patience”. The Hoopers were inspired to create this unique wine after seeing such drops on a visit to Georgia in Europe, and took a largely traditional Eastern European approach to its making on their return home. That effort has rewarded them well, as this is a lovely medium to full bodied wine with lots of mouth-feel and a relatively soft finish. And with its suggestions of tropical fruit flavours it’s also a white you can match up with foods normally paired with reds, Derek and Anna suggesting maybe duck that’s not too spicy, a chicken liver parfait, or a rich stock-based lobster bisque. Pay $29, and if you’ve any problems locating it check out www.capejaffawines.com.au. One to note: Tim Adams and Brett Schutz, winemakers at the Clare Valley’s Mr Mick Wines, have released a 2016 Rosé that Mr Mick himself (the late and legendary Mick Knappstein who had a great passion for Rosé) would be more than delighted with (pictured). With subtle apple, raspberry and strawberry fruit flavours and nice fresh acidity, this is a Rosé that will go perfectly with Asian dishes. Pay $17, and while enjoying this one raise your glass to the late Mr Mick.

Testimonials We recently sold our first home through Troy who was an absolute pleasure to deal with. Being our first time selling Troy walked us through every step in the process. Although Troy had fantastic support from his team at Jim Aitken, as an individual he always went above and beyond and kept us in the loop the whole time with his integrity and honesty. Troy is a true professional and aims to deliver a positive experience for the buyer and seller, and for us as the seller this was exactly our experience. With each step expectations were put into place and he communicated with us the whole time. If you have read this testimony this far it probably sounds like I’m blowing Troy’s trumpet, and I am. I would have no hesitation recommending Troy to any seller or buyer.

Skipper walks out estern Sydney’s dramatic start to the new ALeague season took another twist last week when it was confirmed that captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley had played his last game for the club. Topor-Stanley, who missed the Sydney Derby through suspension and skipped the club’s win over Adelaide due to contract negotiations overseas, has signed a deal with a club in the United Arab Emirates. The 31-year-old made 125 appearances for the Wanderers, including 103 in the A-League. “In football, opportunities such as this rarely come around and when it was presented to me I knew that it was something I had to explore,” Topor-Stanley said of his departure. “I would like to express my utmost gratitude to the club for allowing me to pursue this opportunity both from a personal and professional level. I have always wanted to test myself overseas and this is a great chance for me to experience a different culture in life and in football. “It has been an honour and a humbling experience to be able to say I was and am a part of the history of this club and I will always hold that close to my heart.” On Friday, the Wanderers announced Spanish midfielder Dimas as the club’s new captain. The Wanderers played Newcastle at Spotless Stadium last night and return to the venue this Saturday to take on the Central Coast Mariners at 7.50pm.
