Local kidney disease sufferers will no longer have to travel to Penrith for treatment with a $4.7 million centre to be built at Blue Mountains Hospital. The State Government announced last Thursday that it would honour an election commitment to build the dialysis centre for those suffering from kidney failure.

“This state-of-the-art unit will give patients a better quality of life,” said Health Minister Brad Hazzard. “Living with kidney disease is hard enough without having to travel long distances several times a week for life-saving treatment.” Katoomba resident Melissa Hodges, who travels to Penrith three times a week for dialysis, said the news of a nearby facility is very welcome. “It’s a long drive from Katoomba to Penrith when you have to do it three

times a week, especially when you aren’t feeling your best,” she said. Unfortunately patients will still have to make the trek to Penrith for a little while longer, with construction on the new facility not scheduled to start until next year. Once complete, the new centre will cater for up to 24 people a week from the Blue Mountains and Lithgow, easing the pressure on Nepean Hospital in Penrith. Read the full story on page 7

espected intensive care doctor Stuart Lane is preparing to swim the English Channel next week in the hopes of raising enough money to open Australia’s first intensive care unit follow-up clinic. A competitive swimmer already, the Glenbrook resident, who works at Nepean Hospital, said he hopes to raise $1000 for every mile that he swims in the famous channel. “I’m aiming to raise $21,000 in total,” Dr Lane told the Record. “We already have the infrastructure and support at Nepean Hospital but what we need now is the funding to buy the equipment that we would need to run the clinic.” Dr Lane said there is a real need to establish a follow-up intensive care unit clinic for patients because they often get discharged and their local doctor and family do not know how to take care of them. “Often what we see is that even though a person is discharged from hospital they still have a lot of long-term health difficulties, both physical and emotional,” Dr

Lane said. “People in intensive care have survived a critical illness and they have high rates of re-admission to hospital, so we are trying to prevent this from happening. “Being able to come to a clinic with skilled nurses and inpatient rehabilitation would help them to work through issues and get the care they need.” In preparation for what will be roughly 13 hours of swimming across 30 kilometres of English sea, Dr Lane has been training at Glenbrook Pool. He’s also been playing football and working out at the gym to prepare his body for the gruelling adventure ahead. The English Channel is currently a chilly 16 degrees, with variable conditions like wind and wave height in excess of two metres. Dr Lane said the weather conditions will definitely impact his swim. “It’s not so much the distance of the swim but the weather conditions on the day,” he said. Local trails receive big funding boost State Government injects more than $818,000 into popular Blue Mountains’ walking trail upgrades ERIN MAMO

he Blue Mountains will receive close to $1 million dollars in Government funding, to extend walking trails in the region. As part of the 2016-17 Metropolitan Greenspace Program, the NSW Government will give Blue Mountains City Council just over $818,000 to extend the Great Blue Mountains Trail from Leura Cascades to Kiah Lookout in Katoomba. The funds will also be used to upgrade reserve trails at Knapsack Reserve in Glenbrook. Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said that along with Council’s contribution, the two attractions will see a $1.6 million injection of funds. “The Great Blue Mountains Trail is seen as essential in realising the full potential of the Scenic Southern Escarpment project,” he said. “It will provide the off-road shared connection between popular sites and attractions.” The NSW Government grant of just over $593,000 for the Great Blue Mountains Trail, will go towards design and construction of a 450 metre safe pedestrian and bushwalking connection.

The Great Blue Mountains Trail is an accessible pathway for walkers and cyclists which links key recreation and tourist attractions It will also cover the design of trail improvements to Scenic World in Katoomba. The NSW Government grant of $225,000 has been secured to partly fund the devel-

opment of a central hub for sporting activities at Glenbrook’s Knapsack Reserve, which is part of the Scenic Eastern Escarpment Master Plan. “This funding will upgrade cycling and

walking trails in the reserve to provide improved access to new facilities and existing lookouts,” Cr Greenhill said. Minister for Planning and Minister for Housing, Anthony Roberts said 19 projects across NSW would be funded as part of the Metropolitan Greenspace Program. “The program improves regional open space by co-funding projects that enhance parks, bushland, natural areas and waterway corridors,” he said. “The $4 million, which the Government announced for the 19 projects, is the highest funding in the history of the program and this demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to delivering on the open space needs of our communities.” According to their website, The Greater Commission Sydney, who are supporting the project, said they have had a record number of applications from Local Councils this year for funding. The organisation currently has 30 Labrador/Retriever puppies that need temporary homes for up to 14 months. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Puppy Development Manager, Karen Hayter, said as well as providing lots of love and cuddles, puppy raisers help introduce pups to the sights, sounds and smells it is likely to encounter as a guide dog. “We are looking for people that are home most of the time, who are interested in putting effort into training and socialising the dog,” she said. “What you will get in return is a fantastic experience.” Springwood retirees Jenny and Glen McCue, who are currently housing and training their second guide dog, said volunteering their time in this way is very rewarding. “I’d been looking to do some more volunteer work after working with Meals on Wheels for some time, and we decided

this was a good idea now that we have time on our hands and are at home everyday,” Ms McCue said. “Zorro, the four-month-old that we are currently caring for, has a lot of energy so he fits in perfectly with our lifestyle as we already have a dog that we get out and walk daily.” If you chose to get involved, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT provide food, veterinary care, flea and tick prevention, and are always on hand to provide guidance. Puppy raisers need to have a fully-fenced yard, be away from home no more than four hours at a time, and have access to a car so that they can attend training days in the local area. Puppy raisers must also be available to visit the Guide Dogs Centre at Glossodia for vet checks and Puppy Pre-School when required. With 28 people diagnosed with vision loss that cannot be corrected every day in Australia, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is always searching for more volunteers. Taking over two years and costing $35,000 to breed, raise and train each guide dog, they are provided at no cost those who need them. Much of what Queensland have managed to achieve at Origin level over the last decade is based on passion and a belief in themselves. The Blues simply don’t have it. They seem to think the “time is right” for a change when it comes to Origin domi-

nance but they have no idea how to instigate that change. What’s worse, they almost appear unwilling to work for it. It’s time for Laurie Daley to go. It’s time for Mitchell Pearce to be confined to history. In short, it’s time to blow up the whole thing and start again.

he Mayor of the Blue Mountains will join forces with the Mayor of Blacktown to host a Western Sydney Airport community forum this Sunday, July 23. Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill said the airport is a significant proposal affecting the livability of western Sydney for the next century. “The airport has been approved on the basis of a grossly inadequate final Environmental Impact Statement and Airport Plan, having significant impacts on the communities of the Blue Mountains and western Sydney,” he said. “I encourage our community to attend this free event, which will provide further information on how this airport will impact our residents.” The ‘Western Sydney Airport Exposed’ forum will be held inside Blacktown City Council’s Nirimba Room from 1pm to 3pm. Lawson: Local business owner refused bail after threats A 54-year-old Lawson business owner was arrested, charged and bail refused by police on Tuesday, July 4, following investigations into numerous telecommunications offences. It is alleged the male began targeting victims following a failed business transaction. One victim became so concerned for their safety recently that they contacted local police. The male appeared before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, July 5, where he was granted bail. The matter is due back in local court next month.

On Friday, July 7, during a patrol, police observed a motor vehicle doing burnouts in Blaxland. It is alleged a 22-year-old Coogee male performed two burnouts on public roads while his 22-year-old passenger attempted to record the activity by holding his phone out the window. The mobile phone was seized at the time of the offence and both occupants of the vehicle now face police action.

Local police encourage people to surrender guns Local police, along with officers from around the country, are conducting a three

month amnesty. Up until September 30, members of the public who are in possession of unregistered firearms and firearm related articles will be able to surrender, register or supply those items to a participating firearms dealer without fear of prosecution. Prohibited weapons can also be surrendered during the amnesty. Local police said the aim of this period is to either register firearms or remove them from the community. Hazelbrook: Three-year-old girl attacked by two dogs On Thursday, July 6, emergency services received a call following reports of a young child being seriously attacked by two dogs. On arrival at a Hazelbrook address, multiple police rendered first aid to a three-year-old girl from Rutherford, who had been savagely attacked while visiting family at the property. The young girl sustained puncture wounds to her left arm, left leg and her back and more serious lacerations were sustained to her forehead and facial area. The victim was transported to Westmead Hospital were she underwent surgery on the same day. The two dogs have since been seized by Blue Mountains Council and are being held pending current investigations.

Huge win for local kidney patients Blue Mountains residents suffering from kidney failure will no longer have to travel far for dialysis ERIN MAMO

new life-saving centre worth $4.7 million is set to be built at Blue Mountains Hospital through funding via the NSW Government. As per an election commitment, Minister for Health and Medical Research, Brad Hazzard and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional and Rural Health, Leslie Williams announced last Thursday that the local hospital will be getting a Community Dialysis Centre for locals suffering from kidney failure. “This state-of-the-art unit will give patients a better quality of life,” Mr Hazzard said. “Living with kidney disease is hard enough without having to travel long distances several times a week for lifesaving treatment.” Katoomba resident Melissa Hodges, who travels to Penrith three times a week for dialysis, said the news of a nearby facility is great. “It’s a long drive from Katoomba to Penrith when you have to do it three times a week,” she said. “Especially when you aren’t feeling your best.”

Ms Williams said she was pleased to make the announcement, especially after hearing stories first-hand from locals. “This will make an enormous difference to these people’s lives,” she said. “These people already have enough challenges, so we just want to make it easier on them.” The new centre will have six dialysis chairs, which will accommodate up to 24 people a week from the Blue Mountains and Lithgow. The NSW Government is now consulting with key hospital and community representatives on the most suitable design and layout for the unit. “We will be talking to people who need to use the dialysis unit and people who will be staffing it to ensure the new unit meets the needs of the community now and well into the future,” Ms Williams said. One Australian dies every 25 minutes with kidney related disease. People can lose up to 90 per cent of their kidney function before experiencing any symptoms. The Katoomba Community Dialysis Centre will operate as a satellite service for Nepean Hospital. Planning for the new centre will continue throughout this year, with construction due to start in 2018.

end. This Sunday, July 23, organisers from C3 Church are preparing to welcome over 200 locals to Buttenshaw Park for around 80 billy cart races. Pastor Betheny Mills said the billy cart races are always a fun family day out. “Each year we have seen kids as young as three all the way through to adults getting involved in the fun,” she said. “It’s a great community event and that’s what our church is all about – family, community and building relationships.” This year’s derby will see various races according to age as well as the popular daddy-daughter race and the master races event. Each race winner will be given a trophy along with bragging rights at a special presentation at the end of the day. The Kevin McLane Trophy will also be awarded to the person who has the most creative cart. “Last year we saw a number of themed billy carts including Super Mario, a prin-

cess, a shark and Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine,” Ms Mills said. “This year we can’t wait to see what people come up with.” For those who are keen to come along but may not necessarily enjoy the thrill of billy cart racing, there will also be a jumping castle, face painting, kids colouring-in, a sausage sizzle, a variety of food stalls and more. Missing bushwalkers found safe Husband and wife from out of town spend freezing night in bush after going missing in Blaxland ERIN MAMO

wo missing bushwalkers in their 60s were found safe and well last Thursday morning after spending the night in a cave in Blaxland. The 65-year-old man, Hyung Lee, and his 63-year-old wife, Kyunghye Lee, left their Strathfield home last Wednesday and travelled by train to Blaxland where they set off along the Florabella Pass, one of the more rugged treks in the Blue Mountains. Superintendent Paul Albury said the pair were reported missing after their daughter became worried when they didn’t return home on Wednesday night. “Police Rescue started a search for the pair on Wednesday night that continued until around 2am the following morning,” he said. “With no success in finding the couple, we then resumed another search on Thursday morning.” Police said the couple were eventually found when they wandered into the backyard of a home on Cowdery Street in Glenbrook, asking for assistance. “Despite the man being a diabetic, the two were in good health, without any injury or illness,” Superintendent Albury

said. “We’ve had some real cold snaps in the region in the last two weeks, with temps getting down to below zero, so it was quite fortunate that the temperature wasn’t too severe on Wednesday night.” It is believed the couple had planned to travel along Florabella Pass to Warrimoo but became lost when they took a wrong turn down a fire track and began heading back towards Blaxland and then Glenbrook on unfamiliar ground. The couple had bushwalked in the Mountains before but on better signposted and more popular walking trails. Police said this is a timely reminder to all bushwalkers to always plan their trip and carry a personal locator beacon, in case of emergency. “We’ve done 70 rescue operations already this year – that’s about three a week,” Superintendent Albury said. “We ask people that if they are preparing to do a bushwalk that they always track their trek with a personal locator beacon, which can be loaned from local police stations. “If you’ve got a beacon we can pin point exactly where you are if you become lost.” The couple’s family thanked police and the public for their assistance.

Stronger Communities Grants nominations now open One of the things I love about the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury (and why it’s a privilege to represent these communities in Federal Parliament) is the incredible community groups and organisations that contribute to our sporting life and cultural activities, provide services for those in need, and generally foster a sense of community. The people who live here are full of ideas and energy to make our community more vibrant and inclusive and in my opinion, they deserve all the help they can get. Many volunteer hours go into our community organisations, but sometimes a little injection of funds can go a long way to realising a project. That’s why I am pleased to announce the opening of the next round of Stronger Communities Grants. $150,000 has been allocated to each Federal Electorate for eligible small capital projects

that improve local community participation and contribute to vibrant and viable communities. MPs are given the task of consulting with the community and with the help of an independent panel, nominating eligible projects. Grant amounts range from $2,500 to $20,000, and the Stronger Communities grant can provide up to half of the total project cost. Projects need to be scheduled for completion by June 30 2018 and must have a plan and budget for how they will be carried out. If you are involved with a community group and interested in applying, you can submit an expression of interest (EOI). t has been said that the true measure of a person is how they behave or perform when they think no one is watching. Can we draw similar conclusions in relation to running a business? I think we can. One way of thinking about this is in relation to motivation. If you are trying to do everything alone and have no one with which to share the load (either directly or in a supportive capacity), you may find yourself running out of steam. Whereas if you have someone working alongside you, you may discover that their very presence in your business can push you along to strive higher and further than you thought possible. To give you a personal, non-business anecdote: I regularly attend an adult swim squad at my gym. On the days that I swim with this group, I reach at least 2km, whereas by myself, I rarely swim more than 1km. The difference is, no one except me knows how many laps I’ve done or how fast I am doing them. This is not to say that I should not learn to push myself without external motivators. But the goal is far easier

when there are others there in various capacities, creating a more conducive environment. Another aspect of what you do when ‘no one’s watching’, is in relation to donations and local community support. Many businesses choose to donate part of their profits to charity or contribute volunteer hours to community events/organisations. In return, most charities provide some sort of recognition for your business. But would you still donate the same amount of money or time or resources if there was no kudos or PR opportunity? There is nothing wrong with receiving recognition, but do you contribute purely because of the tangible, profit-related benefits that you might get back? Or do you donate because you want to make a difference to a particular cause? Would you still do it without the recognition? We all operate differently and everyone’s motivations are valid. But sometimes it is worth pausing to consider what motivates us, and whether our actions are contingent on who sees what we’re doing.

The odd job may be fine for a bit of pocket money, but you can actually hire them as a casual or part-time employee. In NSW there is no minimum age, but there are rules around minimum pay and not being able to work school hours.

Check out Fair Work as you would for any employee. Starting their own business I’ve worked with clients aged 11 and 12, and although their mums were there, the ‘kidpreneurs’ were active participants. The business acumen Miss Twelve displayed recently exceeded many adults! Hobby versus a business Like any business venture involving a craft or home business, assess whether the ‘business’ is really a hobby or not. This can be assessed from the ATO website. A hobby where they cover only their costs by selling to friends or family could be a start. A real business Minors can set up a business, but there are some restrictions on entering into contracts. A minor can obtain a TFN and ABN so they can set up a business as a sole trader or in a partnership with a parent easily. We would recommend seeing a business advisor if this applies and we can help make sure you and your child are on the right track.

A boom occurs when one of these segments increases in size rapidly and puts pressure on supply. This current boom is courtesy of an influx of investors scrambling for investment opportunities and, when-

ever demand suddenly increases, it has the effect of pushing prices up. These increased values then become a rather enticing ‘burley trail’ to those hungry for an investment. And as more investors are attracted, the more prices go up, which in turn attracts more investors, and so it goes. Investors are also constantly buoyed by positive media ‘noise’ that surrounds a boom market. This creates a ‘can’t lose on property’ attitude and foster’s an environment of urgency for people to hop onto the ‘gravy train’ before it’s too late to grab a bargain. Out with the white and in with the beautiful wholegrains! White bread and pasta probably shouldn’t be on our menu, but that doesn’t mean you should be dumping the ‘good’ grains out there...

Over the last few years we’ve seen a rise in the popularity of low-carb diets. Along with this shift has come the demonising of grain foods, including breads, cereals and pasta. Unfortunately, while skipping the white breads and pastas is a good thing, we as a population are missing out on many of the health benefits that come from wholegrain, high-fibre varieties. In fact, a recent study out of the University of Wollongong has found that many of us are only getting half the whole grains and high-fibre cereal foods that our bodies need. “Adults had an average of 6.4g cereal fibre a day, which is the equivalent of only two serves of higher fibre grain foods – just half of what many adults require,” said Eden Barrett, lead researcher and Accredited Practising Dietitian. The current Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend four to six serves a day of grain foods. A serve is around one slice of bread or 1/2 a cup of rice, pasta or oats.

The problem with labelling all bread/ pasta/rice etc as ‘bad’ is that we are overlooking the most important factor: the quality of the grain foods we are eating. Highly processed white breads and pastas offer little in the way of nutrition and it is advisable to reduce your intake of these foods, but their wholegrain cousins are important sources of cereal fibre. “Fibre is key for good health, and while we can get it from a whole range of foods, we know that cereal fibre specifically is protective against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer,” said Liz Kellett, President of the Dietitians Asso-

ciation of Australia. To increase your intake, try swapping white breads, wraps and pastas for wholegrain varieties. When it comes to your favourite Asian meals, try swapping white rice for brown rice, and when you’re choosing breakfast options look out for oats, muesli or wholegrain cereals. Those who are on a gluten-free diet due to coeliac disease or gluten intolerance don’t have to miss out, with many nutritious gluten-free wholegrains to choose from including brown rice, buckwheat, millet, gluten free oats and quinoa.

ou’d have to be a fairly contrary soul to argue these days against the importance of the role played by climate and aspect on the quality of wine. It’s something covered generally by the French term ‘terroir’, which also includes things such as soil and vineyard layout. A major part of ‘terroir’ is a vineyard’s altitude, something that’s closely related to climate and hence to how a wine tastes. It’s why the best of Queensland’s wines generally come from the Granite Belt, high up in the Great Dividing Range, to the south-west of Brisbane, where vineyard altitudes generally run between about 700 and 1000 metres. But we’re staying south of the border today, where McWilliams has just launched its new McW 480 and McW 660 Reserve ranges, with labels proudly displaying the contours of topographic maps and the numbers referring to elevation above sea level. The McW 480 range is priced at about $20 and comprises a Hilltops Shiraz alongside a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba. The McW 660 Reserve range takes it up a bit in price to about $25 and quite significantly in altitude, to vineyards averaging some 660 metres elevation. Here we get a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from Tumbarumba, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz from Hilltops, and a Syrah from near Canberra. Shiraz and Syrah are made from the same grape variety, with the latter generally being more savoury and European in style, the former being bolder and brasher, in the style of the big Barossa reds Australians have.

Next month, the 16-year-old Hazelbrook student will jet off to Ontario, Canada, where she’ll compete in not one, not two but three different sports at the 2017 World Dwarf Games. This year’s World Dwarf Games, which run from August 5 to 12, will be the largest sporting event in history held exclusively for athletes with dwarfism. More than 600 athletes with dwarfism from around the world will descend on Guelph, near Toronto, to participate in a variety of sports including basketball, table tennis and hockey. A champion swimmer, Sarah won’t just be showing off her talents in the pool but also in soccer and track and field. Sarah said she was excited to take part in her very first World Dwarf Games. “I can’t wait to get over there but I’m expecting to be very tired from competing as all my sports are clumped together,” she said. “First up I’ll be playing soccer for Australia

I’ll wrap up the competition by running in the 4x100m relay.” While Sarah is chomping at the bit to get overseas, she does require some much-needed financial assistance to help her with her travels. With no funding on offer from any of the governing bodies, Sarah and the rest of her Aussie teammates are forced to pay for the entire trip on their own. Sarah is hoping to raise $3000 via a GoFundMe page to assist in her sporting endeavours. “We don’t get any funding from Swimming Australia… we rely on sponsorship from businesses and raising our own funds,” she said. “We’ve had to pay for our own uniform, accommodation and flights. It is annoying because we have to pay for everything out of our own pockets and it’s not the cheapest thing.” After years of not being able to participate due to constant ear infections, the Nepean Aquatic Centre swimmer only took up the sport four years ago and impressed the moment she dived into the pool.
