housands of international guests visit the Blue Mountains each week and now sporting royalty has joined the list. Arsenal club legend Freddie Ljungberg visited the Three Sisters at Katoomba to promote the 2017 Arsenal in Sydney tour, where the EPL giants will play back-to-back blockbusters against Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers. Ljungberg, 39, played 328 games for the Gunners in a glittering 10-year career. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the Gunners will be in Australia in July next year. “Football fans around Australia and the world can get these dates in their diary, and book their trip to Sydney for two blockbuster matches,” Mr Ayres said. “The atmosphere will be electric with Arsenal bringing their first team squad to go head-to-head with two of our top sides.” Tickets to the games at ANZ Stadium go on sale tomorrow – Tuesday, July 19. Arsenal Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gazidis said the Club was looking forward to the matches. “Our pre-season matches enable the squad to complete final preparations ahead of a new campaign, and Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers will provide a strong test for the team,” Mr Gazidis said. “The trip also gives our travelling squad a wonderful opportunity to see our loyal supporters in a country so passionate about football.” Ljungberg’s trip to Katoomba last week was all about promoting the huge sporting spectacle, which organisers hope will sell out the Homebushbased venue. More information on the tour can be found at www.arsenalinsydney.com.

Meet the teen who wants your vote Sam Parker-Davies is just 18, but he’s planning to shake up the local government election in September ERIN MAMO
e’s just 18-years-old but Katoomba resident Sam Parker-Davies is preparing to take on the roller coaster world of politics. The teenager will run under the banner of the group ‘Your Community’ as an independent at the local Council elections in September. Mr Parker-Davies is running alongside Alexander Driscoll and Allison Eliss at the September poll. “We want a Council that deals directly with the people it represents and is completely accountable to its community,” Mr Parker-Davies said. “We’re just ready for an integral and honest Council with youthful energy and we know we can provide it.” Mr Parker-Davies graduated from Korowal High School in Hazelbrook last year and has since travelled around Australia. He is also a keen fundraiser and has coordinated many successful fundraising events. Mr Parker-Davies currently works at an organic restaurant called Native Kitchen

Katoomba’s Sam Parker-Davies is running for Blue Mountains Council
and Bar in Lawson, and said it’s really important for him to work somewhere that agrees with his ethics. Now, he has decided to run for Council because he believes the local community feels underrepresented. “The idea behind Your Community is to give locals a direct link to the Council and shake up a culture founded on an ‘us and them’ mentality,” he said. “No one else before me on the Council has been 18. The demographic of the youth is hugely underrepresented and in a time of environmental crisis the younger generations need to step up so that they have an environment they can live in. “The issues the youth face for the future are not taken seriously by politicians and not by our local Council.” The candidates have recently spent time with the community and have come up with five main issues of concern, being the environment, the arts, social justice, small business and Council integrity. Leading up to the election the candidates will be spending more time at Leura Mall, Katoomba Street and Blackheath Neighbourhood Centre to speak to members of the community. Local residents will go to the polls on September 10.

o matter what you think of the decision to ban greyhound racing in New South Wales from July next year, there’s one thing you can be sure of: Mike Baird has plenty of guts. The Premier made the difficult decision despite knowing it could be politically fatal to him in rural New South Wales, which will be hit hardest by the decision. It’s not the first time that Mr Baird has shown strong leadership to tackle a difficult issue. He of course introduced the controversial lock-out laws in Sydney, which like the greyhound shutdown was called a knee-jerk reaction by critics, and a necessary evil by supporters. As much as Mr Baird may be losing popularity in some quarters by decisions such as the lock-out laws and greyhound shutdown, he’s actually doing what we’ve desperately wanted politicians to do for some time – showing strong leadership and making difficult decisions that he believes have the state’s best long-term interests at heart. Nobody can deny that the report on ABC’s ‘Four Corners’ program last year, which revealed the vile practice of live baiting of greyhounds, exposed a dark side of an industry that most day-to-day people don’t know much about. For most the greyhounds are something they only see on a TV in the back of the pub on a Friday night; their popularity is limited to a core group of mostly older supporters who grew up when the ‘dishlickers’ were part of Sydney’s culture and social fabric. For the punter who throws a few dollars on the greyhounds every now and again,

Mr Baird’s decision will have little longterm impact. Not only will other states continue to run greyhound racing, but I can assure you that Sky Racing will find plenty of other content to fill the gaps. It is those people who do the right thing in the industry that most people, including myself, feel sorry for. These owners and trainers travel around the state to races for prize money that sometimes equals only a few hundred dollars. Greyhound racing has never been about the money, for most in the industry it is a livelihood albeit a modest one. For towns like Dapto, it is the glue that holds the community together. But as much as I feel sorry for those who do the right thing, and for those who put food on the table thanks to greyhound racing, there is a feeling in all of this that we need to grow up. having them chase a fake rabbit around a track for 500 or so metres just doesn’t cut it in 2016, especially when behind the scenes there’s a much darker story to be told. I hate over-regulation and political correctness as much as the next sensible person, but the facts speak for themselves in this regard. Between 48,000 and 68,000 greyhounds – or at least half of all greyhounds bred to race – were killed in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive. Up to 20 per cent of trainers engage in live baiting and 180 greyhounds a year sustain “catastrophic injuries” during races, such as skull fractures and broken backs that resulted in their immediate deaths. We just can’t stand by and let that continue to happen. Around the world, bans on greyhound racing have become the norm. In the United States, commercial dog racing is banned in 40 states. As much as the greyhound industry will present its argument on job losses and its own efforts to reform the sport, the figures show that the industry is beyond repair. By the time the shutdown happens and the full impact is felt, Mr Baird will be preparing for the 2019 election, which may well become a referendum on this issue as well as the lock-out laws. He has taken a giant political gamble, which he should be applauded for. I dare say that Luke Foley’s decision to oppose the greyhound racing ban is equally a gamble and significant risk. This could get very messy.

Vital service must be reinstated Blue Mountains MP says State Government needs to start ‘walking the talk’ on domestic violence help DALE DRINKWATER
undreds of women have died at the hands of their partner, a worrying trend that could continue without early intervention services. Penrith Women’s Health Centre lost its only domestic violence caseworker after June 30, when funding was not reinstated by the State Government. The case worker’s services closed the gap in the Government’s Staying Home Leaving Violence Program, which does not assist women who are still living with their partners. Now, domestic violence workers say those women have nowhere to go, prompting a meeting with local State and Federal Opposition MPs last Monday, including Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle. NSW Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jenny Aitchison coordinated a ‘strength in numbers’ meeting with NSW Shadow Minister for Women Sophie Costis, NSW Member for Londonderry Prue Car, Federal Member-elect for Lindsay Emma Husar and several western Sydney domestic violence workers. Ms Aitchison slammed the Government

after it admitted it didn’t know how many beds are provided by refuges, showing a disconnect with the complexity of victims suffering from domestic violence. “The Government goes on and on about wanting to get into prevention, they want to talk about policing and about legislative changes,” she said. “But when it comes to victims services, your refuges, your accommodation, and your actual victim support and counselling, they don’t want to know about it.” Ms Doyle said the Government needs to ‘start walking the talk’. “When it gets to the point where people come into the office of a Member of Parliament asking for help because there aren’t services around, something is very wrong,” she said. Penrith Women’s Health Centre extends up the Blue Mountains, because the Mountains itself has very little services according to Manager Jane Gold. Ms Gold is in the same boat as staff at the Sydney Women’s Counselling Centre and the Cumberland Women’s Health Centre, who have made repeated requests to the State Government for funding to continue, with little-to-no response. It’s understood the State Government is looking at the issue.

Domestic Violence
New domestic violence support group in Katoomba ERIN MAMO
new service is now available for women suffering from domestic violence in the Blue Mountains. On Thursday, July 21, the Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre in partnership with West Connect Domestic Violence Services will hold the first of eight educational group sessions for women who have or are currently experiencing abuse in their relationship. Over the eight week period, Outreach Workers Bronwyn Hall and Kylie Mott will provide a space where women can come together and learn about the different types of domestic violence, the cycle of abuse and asking the question ‘how did I get here’, useful communication tools and life after abuse and healing. West Connect has found a need in the Blue Mountains community to run these workshops. “Currently one in every three women are in domestic violence relationships nationwide,” Ms Hall said. “What we are now finding in our community is that there are many women
A
who are in violent relationships and are isolated, believing that no one else is going through the same thing. “We want to give these women the opportunity to connect with others who have had similar experiences.” One important lesson that West Connect hopes to teach women is that there is life after domestic violence. “Most of the time many of the women who come to our sessions and have experienced domestic violence have low self esteem and self worth,” Ms Hall said. “We aim to give women the tools they need to re-build their confidence so that they can heal and move on with their lives.” The eight week sessions will be held from 9.30am to 12pm from Thursday, July 21 to Thursday, September 8 at the Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre, located at 124 Lurline Street, Katoomba. There will be free but limited childcare available at each of the sessions. For more information on attending the sessions or for further assistance to escape domestic violence situations, call 4782 5133.

Markus says goodbye Outgoing Macquarie MP Louise Markus has thanked supporters and the local community, labelling her time in Parliament as an “incredible journey”. Ms Markus lost the seat at this month’s election to Labor’s Susan Templeman. “I thank my family – my husband Jim and my children Joshua and Hannah who have sacrificed so much during my time as a Federal Member of Parliament, and my church family for their unfaltering and ongoing love and support – a new chapter has begun and I look forward to being able to spend more time with them,” Ms Markus said. “I acknowledge and thank the great Australians across the nation and throughout the two electorates I have represented, who I have been so blessed to share life with over the last 12 years, and for their trust in me and my ability to deliver for them and their community. “I thank my Federal Parliamentary colleagues who have worked with me to deliver real outcomes for the people I have represented and the nation.” Ms Markus encouraged locals to make sure Ms Templeman delivers for them. “The incoming Labor member made many promises during the election campaign, which included a bypass for the Hawkesbury which will supposedly fix all traffic problems; a no 24-hour airport at Badgerys Creek and $5 million for a new operating theatre at Hawkesbury Hospital. I encourage the people of Macquarie to hold her to account,” she said.

ustralian parents are struggling to teach their children how to drive correctly, according to a new survey. The survey interviewed over 800 NRMA Free2go members aged 16-19 who had either recently obtained their provisional driving licence or were currently undergoing professional driving lessons. More than half of those surveyed said their parents couldn’t teach them how to parallel park and found it difficult to teach merging and checking blind spots. Dominique Maiorana, owner of DriveZone Driving School in Katoomba, said he constantly has to correct bad behaviour that learner drivers have picked up from their mum or dad. “Almost every single learner driver I teach has learnt the wrong thing from someone who is not a professional driving instructor,” Mr Maiorana said. “I’m basically there to repair all the damage that has been done.” Half of those surveyed also said instructors taught them road rules their parents were unaware of. It might have been 20 years since the supervisor has had to think about the technicalities of getting behind the wheel, and in many cases road rules and conditions are very different from when parents first learned how to drive.” 65 per cent of students rated their experience with a professional driving instructor as ‘very positive’.

Four decades of amazing artworks Acclaimed Springwood Art Show returns for its 40th year with plenty of incredible work on display Dr Mark Howie said that every year his students embrace the opportunity to showcase their talents alongside established artists. “It’s fantastic to see how having their work hung in a professional manner boosts the confidence of students,’’ he said. The proceeds of the event will directly support students of the school with 25 per cent of all sales going to the purchase of educational resources. This year’s prizes for the show include the $1000 Rose Lindsay Art Prize, $500 highly commended prize and the viewers’ choice awards. There is also the Youth Art Encouragement Award, which will be given to the best student artwork. The art show is an opportunity to invest in affordable quality art from a mature artist or young talent. There will be around 400 pieces of art up for sale over the weekend from over 100 local artists. Dr Howie urged visitors to the show to pay special attention to the talented student artworks. “Sales of student works have routinely been part of the art show over the past 40 years,’’ he said. If you know you have done work that was not approved, disclose it in your Contract so a purchaser cannot complain about it. Be prepared for the pest and building report When a buyer buys a property they take it as it is. This means that any negotiations as to the property’s condition happen before the cooling off period expires. The purchaser will get a
pest and building report and it will reveal problems. You might consider conducting your own pest and building report so you are aware of what might come up and so you can rectify any issues before your property goes to market. Cleanliness A seller is required to give a purchaser a property at settlement in the same or similar condition as it was when it was first inspected. Despite this I often deal with outraged purchasers who aren’t happy with the state of cleanliness of a property at settlement. To avoid any unnecessary delays at settlement, keep the lawns mowed and the house clean. Utilise your agent This isn’t so much a legal suggestion but an important one. Agents are in a very unique position to be able to speak to both seller and buyer. Tell your agent you are happy to have a meet and greet with the buyer before settlement to provide them with any copies of any documents you have such as warranties for appliances and share with them any expert knowledge you have about the property for example how to work the air conditioning system or reset the codes for the alarm.

Lacaze FINANCE MATTERS
I have just finished reading an article about a new theory which endeavours to explain how extraterrestrial life could have evolved in the universe. This theory is so radically different from accepted norms, that it has garnered a great deal of attention both inside and outside the scientific community. And, as per usual, with the postulating of any new concept, comes a multitude of criticism from the established ranks of whatever field the postulator may be involved in.
It’s time to step outside the box
Alternative Technology Association MEMBER
SOLAR
owner and manager Investor Tuition investortuition.com.au
Therefore it was of no surprise that there were many dissenting voices from experts, vehemently attacking this new thinking with both scientific and philosophical argument. Now, I know you are thinking, so what, and why do we need to know any of this, especially in a finance column? And you are right. A new theory explaining al-
ien life formation is probably the furthest from finance we could get. But rather than the new theory, it was the criticism of same that really created my interest. The authors are no doubt highly credentialed and hugely intelligent people with long years in research and academia. But this did not stop harsh peer criticism, some of which, bordered on ridicule. Strangely I could see the same issue within the world of financial advice. The entrenched doctrines of the advice industry are also impervious to new thinking or concepts, which can, and has disadvantaged clients as a result. Institutional involvement has guided the advice industry in a direction that has belayed the importance of individual customer needs in favour of broad brush solutions that utilise a suite of in-house products. And just like the scientific community, any alternative thinking suffers the same level of critical responses to ensure the status quo remains. As a result, I have decided to introduce some of my own radical thinking, and will share some alternative ideas to some of the staid concepts so entrenched into the financial advice world. So over the next few weeks, stay tuned!

ometimes chance meetings can lead to the creation of something beautiful and unexpected. This was the case for Golden Guitar winning Indigenous country music artist Warren H Williams and emerging artist Dani Young. “It came about by accident,” Warren said of their musical collaboration. “I heard Dani sing one night at an open mic night.
“I jokingly said ‘I think you’re singing in the wrong genre, why don’t you sing country music?’” Inspired by one of his early collaborations with country music star John Williamson – which earned the pair an ARIA nomination – Warren decided to reach out to the young artist. “I was trying to give someone a chance like the chance I was given by John when we first got together,” he said. From there the former jazz singer joined together with the country music great to create the album ‘Desert Water’ which will be launched at the Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 22. Though they come from different
backgrounds the pair found a kinship in the song writing process, producing an album that features the best of their combined talents. “The songs that we wrote for the album took only a couple of weeks and we wrote all the songs together,” Warren said. “It worked well for me and Dani, our voices complement each other extremely well. “I had the music and the melodies in my head and she’s very good at writing words. It just came so easy.” Warren has been surrounded by music since he was a child and his career has only blossomed as he has gotten older. Growing up with his father, country
music singer Gus Williams, it was clear from the first time he picked up a guitar that Warren would seek out a career in the industry. As for whether he’d like to do more musical collaborations with Dani in the future, Warren’s answer is a resounding ‘yes’. “We found each other as a duo and I hope it continues,” he said. Warren H Williams and Dani Young will be launching their new album ‘Desert Water’ with a performance at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, July 22 at 8pm. Tickets are $25. DVD Hail, Caesar!
Rated PG // KATE REID Take a trip behind the scenes of 1950s Hollywood in this fictional comedy from famed directors Joel and Ethan Coen. Set after the war, Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is a fixer for Capitol Pictures. He’s busy trying to help solve the issues of a group of actors and directors including a singing cowboy, a disgruntled director, a handsome dancer and a beautiful swimmer. But his biggest problem comes when Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), the star of the studio’s new epic film ‘Hail, Caesar!’ is kidnapped. Mannix is left with a ransom note demanding $100,000 or the star won’t live to see the day out. Critics have praised the film with
movie review site Rotten Tomatoes describing ‘Hail, Caesar!’ as a ‘love letter to post-war Hollywood’; a perfectly cast film and complete with period detail. The film features some of the biggest Hollywood names including George Clooney and Josh Brolin alongside Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Tilda Swinton and Frances McDormand. With films like ‘True Grit’, ‘No Country For Old Men’ and ‘The Big Lewbowski’ under their belt it’s no surprise that this is another hit film from the Coen brothers. Grab your copy of ‘Hail, Caesar!’ on DVD and Blu-ray in store or online now!

Delta Goodrem
Wings of the Wild // KATE REID Aussie pop star and ‘The Voice’ coach Delta Goodrem is making it clear she’s had enough of the haters on her fifth studio album ‘Wings of the Wild’. Devoid of the usual love songs this album is all about Delta and her experiences over the last few years. Lead single ‘Wings’ made it to number one on the ARIA singles charts, no doubt in part because of her live performance of the track on ‘The Voice’. The mainstream appeal is pretty clear; with heavy drums and soaring vocals it’s hard not to find enjoyment from the dance inspired track. The rest of the album is a mix of uptempo hits alongside more poignant ballads. There’s elements of pop, dance and r ‘n’ b, and of course there’s the piano tracks that remind audiences of the Delta they first came to love all those years ago. Last week the album ‘Wings of the Wild’ reached number one on the ARIA charts. Overall it’s a solid album which is sure to be a hit with Delta fans.
so-bright secretary, Kevin. ‘Ghostbusters’ is directed by Paul Feig who worked with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy on the 2011 comedy hit ‘Bridesmaids’. Remaking a classic film is always a bit of a risk. It will be interesting to see what kind of response the film gets from fans and critics. ‘Ghostbusters’ is now screening at Hoyts Penrith. It’s hard to think of a recent movie that has caused quite as much controversy as the new ‘Ghostbusters’ film, which hits cinemas this week. With some fans screaming ‘but they’re all women!’ much of the focus seems to have been on the gender of the cast
rather than the fact that this is a seriously talented group of comedy actors. Heading up the cast are Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, who are joined by ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. When a thousand trouble-making ghouls take over the city of Manhattan, it’s up to this team of ghost-catchers to stop them. The film also stars Aussie man of the moment Chris Hemsworth as the not-

AUSTRALIAN SURVIVOR LATE 2016 CHANNEL 10
Ê Last Sunday’s finale of ‘The Voice Australia’ – won by Alfie – will be the last time we’ll be seeing Jessie J on Aussie screens after the UK pop star announced she was leaving the hit series after two seasons. Jessie J was by far the best judge on the show and she’ll definitely be missed.

Ê Channel Ten has revealed the cast of ‘Australian Survivor’ ahead of its premiere later this year. A whopping 24 contestants have been announced ranging in age from 23 to 62. A private investigator, an ex-professional cricketer, a criminal lawyer, a firefighter and magician are among the contestants competing for a $500,000 prize. Hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia, the series began filming in Samoa last month.
Ê It’s looking increasingly likely that ‘Dancing with the Stars’ won’t be seen on Channel Seven this year. It’s understood the network are still working on a new series but it’s highly unlikely it will be ready for this year. With the Rio Olympics and a new season of ‘The X Factor’ coming up, Seven’s programming schedule is fairly jam-packed. If ‘Dancing with the Stars’ doesn’t return this year, it’ll be the first time since 2004 that it didn’t feature. Ê
Channel Nine have picked up ‘Vet on a Hill’, a new series starring Aussie vet Dr Scott Miller at his three UK clinics. The series includes life saving surgery, home visits, local farms, famous faces and devoted pet owners. Dr Miller began his career in Sydney before moving to the UK 10 years ago.

GO! has signed a two-year deal for
Adult Swim animation content. Titles such as ‘Aqua Teen Hunger Force’, ‘Harvey Birdman’, ‘Robot Chicken’, ‘Squidbillies’ and ‘The Venture Bros’ will now air in blocks from 11.30pm each Sunday night.
Ê Channel Seven has announced it has picked up the rights to Foxtel hit ‘Selling Houses Australia’. In a surprising move, the hit property series will start airing on
Seven after the Rio Olympics. There are nine seasons of ‘Selling Houses Australia’ completed, with Seven tipped to screen from season five.
Ê The new series ‘The Real Housewives of Auckland’ will premiere on Arena from Monday, August 1 at 8.30pm. Ê Netflix has ordered a reboot of classic 1960s sci-fi series ‘Lost in Space’.

LIFE & STYLE RELAX AND UNWIND WITH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS RECORD ARIES
LEO
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Resist the urge to be a bossy, brusque or rambunctious Ram. The Full Moon charges up your career zone so apply the brakes and think before you speak, especially at work. Otherwise you could say the wrong thing and upset others. The main quality you need to cultivate is patience so your motto for the moment is “Good things come to those who wait.” If you have to speak in front of a group of people, then make sure you have something substantial to say.

HOROSCOPES
Prepare to sparkle and shine, as the Sun joins Mercury and Venus in your sign! If you find yourself being drawn into a conflict with someone during the week, then use your gift of the gab – and considerable charm – to slide out of the situation with plenty of style and grace. When it comes to a specific problem with a child, teenager or close friend, there are no quick fixes. It’s a case of one step forwards and two steps backwards but you’ll eventually make progress.
TAURUS
VIRGO
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Your communication and learning zones are activated by the Full Moon. So it’s a terrific time to exercise your Bullish brain as you talk, text, tweet, read, research, post, publish and converse as creatively as possible. You’ll feel motivated to tackle a big DIY project when the Sun joins Mercury and Venus in your domestic zone. But resist the urge to be super stubborn at home. Strive to be a considerate soul who takes housemates’ needs and views into consideration.
Your private Virgo nature is emphasised this week. So make sure you connect with people who understand your particular peccadillos and need for privacy. But don’t let your perfectionist streak get in the way of trying new things. Jupiter encourages you to be adventurous; while Saturn urges you to keep going – even when the going gets tough. Be inspired by Virgin boss Richard Branson. “You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”
LIBRA
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Stop gallivanting around in a Gemini fluster and instead, focus on stabilising a troubled relationship. With clear communication and deft diplomacy, you can get the partnership heading in a positive new direction. Heed the wise words of acclaimed writer Ernest Hemingway. “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” When it comes to a joint financial arrangement, make sure you understand your responsibilities and fulfil your commitments.
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Prepare for potential domestic dramas early in the week, when the full moonbeams light up your home zone. Librans love things to run efficiently but remember there’s manic Full Moon energy about, so drop the strict schedule and just take things as they come. Wednesday’s Venus/Saturn connection is a wonderful time to work on stabilising and improving a shaky relationship. Looking for lasting love? You may be attracted to someone who is much older and wiser than you.

SCORPIO
Get set for some relationship rumbles, as the Full Moon fires up a partnership problem that’s been brewing and stewing. Try to be more objective about the situation Crabs! If you become overemotional and unreasonable then it won’t help matters. And, if you are dealing with important financial or business matters this week, then a conservative approach will reap rewards. Protecting and stabilising current resources is preferable.
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Expect plenty of phone calls, emails, texts, tweets and snail mail, mostly to do with work or school. And strive to handle a perceived communication problem in a positive way. Saturn boosts your ambitious streak mid-week. You have a strategic plan and are keen to get ahead, but don’t trample over others on your climb to the top. The three keys to Scorpio success at the moment are creativity, communication and charm.
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
This week concentration is high and your attention to detail is even better than usual. So any work you do will be of an extremely high standard, as others sit up and notice your numerous talents. Coupled Capricorns – it’s a wonderful week to work on deepening the love and commitment between the two of you. With hard work and persistence, your relationship can last the distance. Singles – don’t accept second best. Be patient and wait for the right person to come along.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
The focus is firmly on partnerships. The more energy and enthusiasm you put into supporting loved ones, the better the week will be. But don’t worry if you temporarily lose momentum, and question your goals and aspirations. The dreams you dream now will manifest later on. You just need to be patient. Wise words for the week are from birthday great Richard Branson. “If you water flowers they flourish and if you praise people they flourish.”
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Dream big dreams, as the Full Moon urges you to draw up a wish-list of your goals for the future. On Tuesday or Wednesday you may feel the need to get something off your chest. But make sure you choose your confidante wisely. The planets also activate your wellbeing zone so take a close look at your diet and fitness. Incorporating plenty of invigorating exercise and outdoor activities into your weekend routine is a big positive.

Tuesday night’s Full Moon stimulates your money zone so it’s not a good week to go on a shopping spree, venture into the real estate market, plus buy or sell shares. You’re likely to make important financial decisions based purely on your emotions, which are fluctuating wildly under the full moonbeams. Communicating with acquaintances from other countries is favoured though, as you extend your circle of friends to include a creative and cosmopolitan new crowd.

A
nice big-hearted drop to enjoy this time of year with equally big-hearted wintertime dining, is Taltarni’s classic “Bordeaux Blend” that brings together Cabernet, Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot. Sourced entirely from Victoria’s Pyrenees, the 52 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon gives this one beautiful dark-berry fruit flavours, the 42 per cent Merlot plum and cocoa, and just six per cent Petit Verdot balances acidity, and there are lovely tannins… making for an overall judiciously full-bodied food wine that can be bought and enjoyed now, or popped away to develop for even greater pleasure a few more years from now. And it’s one to also think about decanting before serving, giving it a chance to open-up and show itself off to best advantage upon pouring; just 15 or 20 minutes for the currently available 2014 vintage would be fine as it’s a still quite young drop. Great buying at just $26. And as this is a classic French blend, think France again and put it on a winter’s table with an equally classic French panfried Steak Entrecote Marchand de Vin. One to note: Another nice big one that’ll have you quickly smacking your lips – and particularly so if you’ve reason for special-occasion dining coming up – is a Margan 2011 Aged Release Shiraz (pictured) from the Hunter Valley. Made from fruit off 40-year-old vines, this exceptional drop had 20 months in French oak barriques after fermentation, and was then bottle aged in Margan’s cellars for a further four years.

Tough sport comes to the Mountains p.24 NATHAN TAYLOR
nglish sensation Zak Hardaker came to the NRL with plenty of hype after winning the Super League’s Man of Steel award in 2015. Now the 24-year-old is ready to give it his all over the next two months in the hope of securing a long-term deal. Hardaker arrived at Panthers HQ two weeks ago in a swap for livewire hooker James Segeyaro, who was sent to Hardaker’s former club, Leeds, in the English Super League. The versatile back said he’s enjoyed every minute of his short time in Penrith. “It’s brilliant, it’s a lot different to back home. Penrith is more relaxed and slowpaced, which is pretty good,” he said. “Leeds is a big city and is very rushed but it’s brilliant around here and everyone’s made me feel really welcome.” With the June 30 transfer deadline approaching, Panthers bosses worked fast to shift out of favour hooker James Segeyaro in order to land Hardaker for the remainder of the season. Hardaker admitted he knew very little about Penrith before jumping on the plane Down Under.

“I knew a few people that played for Penrith and I used to watch the NRL back home, so I was somewhat familiar with it, but there was a lot of stuff I didn’t know,” he said. “The transfer deal went through quite fast and I was on a plane within four days, so I did plenty of research on the club and surrounding area before I came over because I didn’t want to be clueless.” Hardaker touched down in Sydney late last month alongside his stepfather Kevin Williams, who accompanied his stepson on the trip to Australia to help him settle in. Hardaker said his stepfather was already a Panthers tragic. “He loves it… when he came to watch me at training someone gave him a Panthers jacket to wear and I don’t think he’s taken it off,” he said. “He’s staying for a month to make sure I settle in and everything is alright. It’s been brilliant to have him here, we’ve gone sightseeing on my days off and he’s keeping me busy.” Hardaker, an English international, is contracted with the Panthers until the end of the season but is hopeful of securing a contract for next year, if his form lives up to the hype.

ustralian wrestling veteran Dean Draven is set to make his Blue Mountains debut later this month. On Sunday, July 31 Draven promises to “kick some serious butt” at the Blue Mountains Pro Wrestling event, ‘Stronghold’, which will be held at Blackheath Community Centre. “It will be an entertaining show for the whole family,” Draven said. “Fans usually enjoy the physicality of it all.” Some of Draven’s trademark moves you can expect to see include the panther plex, the diving headbutt and the panther crossface, which involves locking one arm with your legs around the back of an opponent’s head and then pulling on their head. Promoter of the event, Marek Indyka said there will be plenty of excitement. “People can expect a live two hour action packed professional show featuring some of the best pro wrestlers from around New South Wales,” said Mr Indyka. “Expect high flying, whacky characters, tag teams and monster brawlers, plus the main event.” For more details, visit www.bluemountainsprowrestling.com.au.
