FEATURE STORY

How Katy emerged from darkness to deliver a hit Katy Perry is arguably the biggest female music star in the world, with countless hit albums and singles and a fan base in the many millions. Now, she’s heading down under for a series of live concerts.

nternational superstar, Katy Perry, has announced that The Prismatic World Tour will head to Australia in November, with two shows in Sydney to the delight of fans. Presented by Telstra Thanks and Dainty Group, the tour is in support of Katy’s smash hit album ‘Prism’, which debuted at number one in Australia and has since been certified Triple Platinum. The album has given Katy her biggest ever single in Australia with ‘Roar’ currently certified Nine Times Platinum and still sizzling on the airwaves. And her latest single ‘Dark Horse’ from ‘Prism’ is already Triple Platinum in Australia with the amazing video just released on February 21. “This colourful show will bring you all the songs you know as well as ones from my new album, ‘Prism’,” Katy Perry said. After her incredible success with ‘Teenage Dream’, Katy Perry took the road of self-reflection and ‘Prism’ is very much a product of that process. “I did a lot of figuring out who I am and reconnecting with myself and growing,” she said. “I’ve let a lot of light in, and through that it’s inspired me to write certain songs that are full of that wonderful positivity.” The name of the album is very apt given that the songs on the album are almost as varied as the colours of light that shine through a prism, Katy explains. “I feel like a walking prism. I get to shine a light and beam it to all of my listeners through my songs. I am really proud of all of the songs on this record, and everyone says something different,” she said. “There are a lot of different colours, a lot of different moods, and a lot of different emotions. I’ve learned a lot of things in the past year as I was making it. “When I started writing in November 2012, I was in a much darker place. You can see the transition I was going through

in the first song I wrote for the record with Greg Wells, ‘By the Grace of God’.” In fact, Katy co-wrote every autobiographical track. “Being a writer for me is also about being an observer—observing culture, observing people and relationships, observing myself and my feelings. I put all that stuff in there. The lyrics to my favourite song on the album, ‘Unconditionally’ just came to me all at once. It’s just about me being able to tell my story completely and with great imagery,” she said. The state-of-the art stage, specifically designed by Katy for the Prismatic World Tour, allows her to get closer to her fans than ever before with a truly magical experience from every angle in the arena. Paul Dainty, Chairman of Dainty Group said: “We are honoured to be promoting Katy’s tour in Australia. She is the hottest star in the world, her single and album sales are staggering and Australians adore her.” Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 12 noon on Tuesday, March 11 from www.ticketek.com.au. The Sydney shows are on November 21 and 22, 2014.

Newman heading back to Australia fter rising to prominence last year with his soulful music, breakout singersongwriter John Newman will perform his first Australian headline tour. The British musician has signed on to perform in Sydney at The Hi-Fi on Thursday, May 1 and will also be appearing at the 56th TV Week Logie Awards. Newman is no stranger to Australia and

travelled down under on a promotional tour last year, when he wowed audiences with performances on numerous television and radio shows including ‘Sunrise’ and ‘The X Factor’. The 23-year-old star had his first taste of success in 2012 when he teamed up with quartet Rudimental and lent his vocals to their song ‘Feel The Love’. The track reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart and was a top five hit in

Belgium, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Australia, where it was certified Double Platinum. Newman’s solo career skyrocketed even more a year later after his song ‘Love Me Again’ rose to the top of charts in his native Britain and across the globe. It was followed by Newman’s debut album ‘Tribute’, which was released in October last year and achieved commercial and critical success, with Q Magazine likening the singer to soul greats Otis Redding and Amy Winehouse. Born in Yorkshire, Newman inherited his passion for music from his Motown loving mother, and has been playing since he was 14-years-old. John Newman will perform at The Hi-Fi in Sydney on Thursday, May 1. Call 1300 762 545 or visit www.thehifi.com.au.

he Sydney Hotshots are back and ready to show off their best assets with their brand new show ‘Six Pack Sensation Extravaganza’. The show features dazzling, sexy dance routines that display the Hotshots’ chiseled bodies and was designed in conjunction with one of Australia’s leading choreographers. The final result is two hours of sizzling six pack entertainment. Fans of the Hotshots will get to see their show at the Galston Club on Saturday, March 15. The ‘Six Pack Sensation Extravaganza’ will feature the Hotshots putting on a range of acts, from dressing up as smokin’ firemen to playing seductively smooth officers and suited gentlemen. When the crowd of ladies gets too rowdy and fired up, policemen in uniform arrive to take control in classic cheeky Hotshots style, and there’s also a Wild Wild West themed act.

300 shows a year, the Sydney Hotshots are some of the most talented and polished male revue performers in the world. New recruits to the Sydney Hotshots include former US soldier Johnno, who has recently completed a military tour to Afghanistan, and Dave Hughes who spent 10 years performing at the Excalibur Casino in Las Vegas. The group’s director Paul Reynolds believes that the success of the Hotshots can be attributed to their love of performing, attention to detail and the constant evolution of the show. “The guys spend hours perfecting their moves, training to stay in shape and researching new ideas and songs,” he said. “I believe that it is this sort of ethic; the love for the show and the audience and the level of professionalism our guys bring to the show, that makes the Sydney Hotshots so successful,” Reynolds added. The Sydney Hotshots will be performing at the Galston Club on Saturday, March 15 at 8pm. Tickets are $28. Call 9653 2017 or visit www.sydneyhotshots.com.

enrith Symphony Orchestra has a proud history of bringing fine music to the community, a tradition they will continue in 2014. After a tumultuous end to 2013, in which bushfires ravaged the local area and affected orchestra members, the new season will focus on a theme of renewal with its first concert ‘Music Reassembled’. The concert will be held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 15 and conducted by the orchestra’s artistic director Paul Terracini. The performance opens with the ‘Ancient Airs and Dances’ Suite No. 2 by Ottorino Respighi, which was written in 1923 and inspired by French and Italian lute compositions from the Renaissance. There will also be an appearance from Ben Jacks, Principal French Horn with Sydney Symphony, who will perform with the orchestra as a soloist in Richard Strauss’ virtuosic first horn concerto. ‘Music Reassembled’ will also feature ‘Capriccio Espagnol’ by Nikolai RimskyKorsakov, who is considered to be among the masters of orchestration and uses music to convey the colours, flavours and passions of Spain. Molly’s life set for new TV tale Interesting news in TV circles of late that Channel Seven is currently developing a Molly Meldrum mini-series for 2015 – just like their recent INXS smash. If anyone has seen it or done it in the Australian and international music industry it’s good old Molly. With Molly being such a beloved Aussie personality due to many antics, I tip this will be huge for Seven.

Beautiful Channel Seven presenter and reporter Monique Wright has been announced the permanent host of ‘Weekend Sunrise’ alongside Andrew O’Keefe. Wright has been the fill-in presenter for some time on the program and deserves a chance to anchor. She previously has worked on stories for ‘Sunday Night’ and ‘The Daily Edition’ so certainly has the experience.

With the Winter Olympics over it’s now time for the Winter Paralympics, which will be broadcast from Sochi on ABC1. ABC will air a daily highlights package of competition at 10.30am and 6pm but will screen the Opening Ceremony live at 3am tomorrow, March 8.

Foxtel will launch two new Disney Movie channels on Thursday, April 10. Foxtel Movies Disney will air Disney Pixar films as well as traditional classics from years gone by. The second channel, Disney XD, will include live-action shows, sport and animation.

Huge Channel Nine hit ‘Love Child’ has been given the green light for a second season after just a handful of episodes on air. The series, which is set some 40 years ago in Sydney, has been a ratings bonanza for Nine. It’s understood all the current cast have signed on for season two.

Lastly, a new show will hit our screens soon with the announcement new modelling series starring Naomi Campbell, ‘The Face Australia’, will premiere on FOX8 on Tuesday, March 18 at 9pm. The show also features Australian models Nicole Trunfio and Cheyenne Tozzi as judges.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

RATED M

Starring: Tom Hanks & Barkhad Abdi Tom Hanks returns to playing a serious lead role in a drama film in ‘Captain Phillips’, a psychologically tense thriller that combines a finely woven plot with heaps of action. The movie tells the true story of merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillips and his struggle on the high seas when his boat, the Maersk Alabama, gets hijacked on the Indian Ocean in 2009. Phillips himself gets kidnapped as well by a group of Somali pirates, who take over the running of the container ship. The leader of the pirates, Muse (Barkhad Abdi) threatens the lives of the crew and Phillips has to outsmart and overpower his captors to protect his peers. ‘Captain Phillips’ was directed by Paul Greengrass, the creative force behind ‘The Bourne Supremacy’, ‘United 93’ and ‘Green Zone’. It premiered last year at the 2013 New York Film Festival, and received almost universal praise from critics.

VAMPIRE ACADEMY RATED M Starring: Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry & Danila Kozlovsky

CHRISTIE LAMB ALL SHE WROTE Out Now

Young adult author Richelle Mead had millions of teenagers glued to her books when she released her best-selling novel Vampire Academy in 2007 and now after years of anticipation, the novel has been adapted for the big screen. The supernatural fantasy film is set in a world in which there are different types of vampires – while some are good and peaceful, others more closely resemble the typical evil, blood-sucking kind. Rising actress Zoey Deutch plays the starring role of Rose, a 17-year-old ‘Dhampir’ (half human, half vampire), who is training to be a guardian to the royal Moroi race of peaceful vampires. She and her best friend Lissa were living discreetly in the human world after having escaped from their boarding school St. Vladimir’s Academy, but they are found out and taken back to the Academy. Hurled back into the vampire realm, the two best friends begin to get caught up in a plot of the powerful Stigoi vampires, who are undead and destructive. Directed by Mark Waters, ‘Vampire Academy’ has strong similarities to franchise ‘Twilight’ but is a lot bolder.

Christie Lamb has been an up-and-coming name in the country music industry for a few years and has finally released her debut album ‘All She Wrote’. While the starlet has previously released EPs, this record is her first full length album, with many of the tracks written with acclaimed songwriters in Nashville. Lamb also worked with producer Andrew Cochrane on ‘All She Wrote’, and the result is a fresh, pop-tinged country sound that will appeal to both traditional country audiences and mainstream music fans. The lead, title single has already been released and charted at number 3 on the Australian Country iTunes Chart, with the rest of the album sure to follow. Inspired by musicians such as Americans Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and The Band Perry, Lamb’s album dabbles in a range of genres but sticks to a country-pop core. ‘All She Wrote’ features a mix of emotional ballads, strong acoustic sounds and a focus on Lamb’s stripped back vocals, showcasing her musical talents. Despite her young age, Lamb has strong musical talent and mature songwriting skills, with her sound appealing to contemporary country fans.

GUARANTEED EVERY WEEK

The creators of the ‘South Park’ television series, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have brought their witty, risqué humour to the gaming realm with ‘South Park: The Stick of Truth’. The plot is set in a school yard but, as the rating suggests, this is an adventure-filled game that is best left to adults rather than kids. Players begin as the new kid in town and are given the nerve-wracking challenge of making friends in an epic quest to achieve coolness.

he 2013 vintage proved another classic year for white grapes in Western Australia’s Margaret River, and for one local maker, Forester Estate, it’s resulted in a range of equally classic whites – amongst them a really outstanding 2013 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. February gave plenty of days during this warmest period of vintage for fruit to ripen exactly as the winemaking team wanted. As a result the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc has a refreshing palate of passionfruit, lychee and citrus fruit flavours, and a touch of thyme, reflected in wonderfully matching aromas from the glass. Fruit was sourced from several neighbouring properties in the Margaret River’s Yallingup northern sub-region, predominantly Semillon (53 per cent) and Sauvignon Blanc (45 per cent), with a small two per cent Chardonnay in the blend as well. It is a rewarding drop at $23.99 to enjoy with seafoods and a broad range of other lighter dining options. One to note: Spanish sparkling winemaker, Freixenet that makes more sparkling wines than any other maker in the world (and makes and bottles here in Australia on the Victorian side of the Murray River under the Azahara label), has branched out into the production of Australian still wines. Azahara (it’s Spanish for orange blossom) has just released a 2013 Pinot Grigio and a 2013 Shiraz, each selling for a modest $15 and which winemaker, Dr Phil Spillman says he’s fashioned to partner bright, fresh dishes. I particularly liked the Shiraz that has nicely distinctive black fruits.

hostages from guerilla forces. Yes, that’s right, a classic ‘Arnie’ plotline for movies of this period. While Dutch and his team are focused on fighting guerillas in the jungle, they discover a range of horrors lurking including a group of dead bodies and eventually find a rebel camp that they destroy. But on their journeys something even more terrifying is on their tracks. An extraterrestrial creature who has long been the focus of local myths is alive and stalking them, putting Dutch at greater risk than any human enemy. On the run from the Predator, the crew must wage an all-out war against an allpowerful alien in the treacherous jungle environment. With special effects that were cuttingedge at the time of release, ‘Predator’ reached number one at the United States box office when it was released and proved to be wildly popular with audiences. Whilst it may seem a little dated today, the addition of the new technology makes this a must-own for any collector. West Life has two copies of ‘Predator’ on Blu-ray 3D to give away. For your chance to win one, email the code word ‘PREDATOR’ to competitions@westernweekender. com.au with your name and contact details. Entries close Wednesday, March 12. rnold Schwarzenegger’s sci-fi classic ‘Predator’ was a trailblazer when it was first released in 1987, spawning a popular series that viewers still love to this day. The movie has been re-released on Blu-ray in 3D so that fans can relive all the action and adventure of the original with brighter, three dimensional graphics. With plenty of typical Schwarzenegger action moves, ‘Predator’ is a perfect film for 3D release, making everything more thrilling as the gun fights and explosions leap out from the screen. If you remember seeing the movie back in the 1980’s, you almost won’t recognise how amazing it looks thanks to the technology of today. The new depth and detail provided by the Blu-ray 3D format makes visuals bigger and bolder, and makes viewers feel like they’re in the scene. You’ll want to watch this with the lights off and the sound up! Released in the late 1980’s, ‘Predator’ is a sci-fi classic that still has a modern appeal, with a flashy combination of action and chase sequences and an eerie science fiction plotline. Schwarzenegger plays Major Alan ‘Dutch’ Schaefer, the leader of a special forces team who has been sent into the dense, dangerous Central American jungle on a mission to rescue government

SPECIAL REPORT

The spirit and care that drives our community Volunteers are often celebrated at big events or occasions, but it is those working on the ground right throughout the year that really deserve our respect and constant praise KATHERINE TWEED @ktweed_

riends and family undoubtedly become pillars of strength in trying times. But often the most helpful hand held out is that of a volunteer. And whilst their generosity is appreciated, their selflessness is all the more amazing if you ask the simple question, “why?” After well over 12 months of chemotherapy, radiation, herceptin medication and a full mastectomy – “the works” – any one would be ready to kick cancer out of their life forever and never give it another thought. Breast cancer treatment for Jan Coombe, 73, looked exactly like this – long and exhausting – but unlike many, after being told that she was cancer-free, she decided that she wasn’t ready to banish everything cancer-related from her life completely.

Yes, her treatment was both physically and mentally challenging, but throughout her treatment she was supported by friends, family and surprisingly a bunch of strangers, who she called “my angels” and were there for her every step of the way. The support of those strangers, who quickly became friends, drove her to want to “do something, anything” to give back and help those who are going through the hardship she had already experienced. “From my diagnosis in 2011, I had all my treatment at Nepean Cancer Care Centre. Everyone there was so, so lovely, loving, caring and kind – they were just wonderful,” she said. “It was because of them, and because of my faith, that I made it through it all.” Ms Coombe became a Cancer Council volunteer a year ago, letting her personal experience with the disease actually benefit others, rather than be pushed into the darkest corner of her memory. Once a week she volunteers at the Cancer Council Information Centre, located at the Nepean Cancer Care Centre, where she is

a listening ear for those who need to talk it out and offers information for those who may need it. “When you are going down this road it is very important to have people around who will listen to anything you have to say, who will sit down and talk with you. I am there to listen and I really do understand what they go through, even though I may not say it,” she said. “I don’t say that I know what they are going through, but in my heart I know that I do, so I can empathise, offer a kind word and a smile.” Like Ms Coombe, there are many others in the community who reach out and volunteer their time, money and efforts because of their personal experiences. For 58-year-old Jo Stevenson, having a brother living in a nursing home, where there was not many ways she could assist him, was enough to push her into volunteering for Nepean Food Services, where she could assist the elderly before they make the move to supported accommodation in the area.

It was because of them, and because of my faith, that I made it through it all

Frances Nicholson, Melissa Spurrier and Kristine Gauci volunteer with Our Community Cares. Photo: Melinda Jane all part of the community, none of us are better than the other, we all belong here and are equal,” Ms Spurrier said. “We have seen people walk out of a doctors surgery or a specialist’s service that is potentially life saving, because they can’t afford it. We can’t have that.” Ms Spurrier, who is a cancer survivor herself, is very passionate about helping people who can’t afford medical care or services, whereas Ms Gauci strives to

improve the quality of life for the elderly. “Our Community Cares is about combining both our passions to support as many people as we possibly can,” Ms Gauci said. The organisation raises money for needy people and in their first big initiative, collected items for Christmas hampers to be given to the homeless. “We are using our personal journeys to think about the services and support that is needed in our local community.”

For five years she has volunteered up to four days per week for the organisation, delivering meals and having a cuppa with the frail aged, elderly and lonely. “Many of these people don’t have any family, or a family that cares for them, at all – we are often the only people that they see,” she said. “To see the gratitude on their faces when you remember something they have told you from last week – when you ask about ‘little charlie’, or their dog who was sick the week before – you get a great sense of pride knowing that you have helped someone out,” Ms Stevenson said. Volunteering is an essential part of life for Ms Stevenson, but she is worried it may be a part that will die out if kids aren’t taught to help others from a young age. “Unless you have had someone close who has needed a service or has volunteered for one themselves, you have no idea what’s really out there,” she said. “Without volunteers, organisations like this wouldn’t exist because no money in the world could pay for what we do. No matter how many volunteers we get in the world, it will never be enough.” With 187,000 people in the Penrith community alone, there are thousands that need help or are already helping. But some volunteers have found that there is not always a charity established for the cause they are passionate about. Mel Spurrier and Kris Gauci discovered this whilst working together on the Board of the annual Penrith Relay for Life. In June last year they created Our Community Cares, a charity focusing on no particular disease or demographic. “Our vision is to see a community where people don’t ever feel excluded. We are

Colder weather means a new wardrobe

KATHERINE TWEED katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_

Plain

colours are the way to go in the cooler months, trust me!

As much as I love the hotter months of the year, by the time March rolls around, I am well and truly ready to ditch the shorts and thongs for my favourite winter warmers. My love of bikinis (you may have read about my obsession in a previous column) makes me appear a summer-lover at heart but in reality, the rest of my personal style screams winter. I love jeans, jumpers and long sleeved t-shirts and have a scarf collection that is so big it’s embarrassing! I’ve already got my wardrobe cleaned out, leaving a generous space for a few new pieces to get me through the season – I can’t wait to fill it with the season’s hottest looks. I know there are many of you who disagree with the preconceived idea that winter is all about black, white and neutral colours but honestly, there is nothing that makes me happier than simple, colourless dressing. Autumn/winter fashions change from year to year but it looks to me like this year the fashion industry is on my side, with a bounty of black and white clothing, the odd khaki shirt or jacket and camel or beige tones galore. This season is all about simple day wear, stand out accessories (think brightly coloured handbags and leopard print stilettos) and the comeback of the turtleneck. Monochrome outfits will be easily brightened this season with a touch of red lippy and the odd coloured accessory – keep your eyes on bright reds, navy blues, deep greens and surprisingly, pale pinks. Grab yourself a pair of ‘boyfriend’ jeans and purchase anything with checks or animal prints but don’t go over the top. You might remember that during autumn/winter 2013 we saw loads of patterned stockings... this season they are being replaced with plain colours, so pack the prints away for another year. Sometimes it feels as though we have just begun to get used to incorporating one new and quirky trend into our personal style when a new season rolls around and introduces a whole new line of weird trends. It is annoying, especially when it’s something awesome like

high waisted denim shorts, but try to look at the bright side: you have the opportunity to change up your look as you experiment with something different. This season, the poncho and turtleneck trends are a couple that we should all be brave enough to try – the last time I wore a turtleneck I was about five-years-old so I am keen to welcome the trend back into my wardrobe – and they will be easy to add to the autumn/winter staples that you already have. As a final note, as soon as the weather begins to cool down, women everywhere decide to pull out their footless tights and wear them as pants. Yes, I understand that they are super comfortable and are really easy to pull on in the morning but this doesn’t mean they are suitable for wearing outside – especially if you wear clothing sized at anything over an eight. Tights look especially atrocious with midriffs and muffin-tops so please, classify them as an ‘at home’ item! Now, your next challenge: get out to the shops this weekend! Summer officially ended last Friday, so the time is right to spruce up your wardrobe. Every time the season changes should be your excuse to get the credit card out and have a great day of shopping with your friends.

Round diamonds are classic, elegant and extremely popular with buyers

Tips on how to buy a diamond ring Over the next five weeks I will show you how, and give you the tips and things to look for when buying a diamond. For most people this is one of the most daunting purchases they might make second to buying a house. The reason being that a lot of people don’t know what they are looking at. No-one wants to be taken advantage of, ripped off or buy the diamond your partner didn’t want. So I will start with the very basics. The shape of the diamond is what you love. This really is “your choice” and this can really show off your personality and style. A r ound diamond – classic and elegant! This is called the “round brilliant cut”. A round diamond is up to 40 per cent more expensive than some of the other shapes. This is because of all the diamonds in the world upwards of 80 per cent are round diamonds. They are by far the most popular. A princess cut diamond – pure and sharp. This would be the second most popular shape. It’s a square diamond modified brilliant. This gives it a sharp yet alive nature. The cushion cut diamond – graceful and stylish. This is one of the hottest stones at the moment. They look incredible when you get the right quality of cut. I will go into this more another week. The pear shape diamond – Sexy and fun. This is my diamond of choice! My wife Nicole has one of these. Again you need to do your work to find a well-proportioned shape. I am very picky when buying pear shape diamonds for York Jewellers in Penrith and can often take a lot of time to find the perfect one. Katherine Heigl with her 3-carat halo cluster diamond ring. Elizabeth Taylor with the enormous pear shape diamond necklace and Victoria Beckham with her monster of a diamond engagement ring. Seems the style was a hit long ago and still going strong! Next week I will continue to offer tips and advice on purchasing the right diamond for your partner.

HOROSCOPES

18

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

You continue to ride a rollicking wave of change. Venus (the planet of friendship) helps you form new alliances with supportive people. Self-imposed seclusion gives way to a satisfying social life and amusing entertainment. Witty one-liners make you laugh, and emotion and sentiment worm their way into your heart.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

You gladly trade refuge for freedom. The Piscean sun catapults you out of a rut and into more exciting territory. You achieve independence in the context of close relationships through open communication. To keep loved ones in the loop, express your heartfelt needs and desires out loud.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

JOANNE MADELINE MOORE

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro. tumblr.com www.twitter.com/ JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2014.

An impasse on the home front gets a nudge mid-week. Jupiter has switched gears, which helps you accelerate towards a longawaited goal. Regaining the upper hand has a transforming effect on your disposition. Buoyancy returns, and inspiration bubbles back up to the surface. Having someone to yourself for the first time in weeks is the icing on the romantic or relationship cake.

Your world pulsates with pent-up energy. Mars suggests you release it through physical activity, while Mercury prefers a talkfest. Either way, a much-needed respite comes later in the week. Leos are in the final phase of a journey of self-discovery, and your more assertive self will soon re-emerge.

Star predictions for the week beginning March 9

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Aim to be firm but fair. While others change their tune, you stick to the same song book and steer situations in the right direction. What began as a joint partnership is likely end with you in total control. Meanwhile, Mars marking time in the material zone compels you to curb spending and start saving.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Keeping the faith is your biggest test of character. Persistence pays off eventually but in the meantime, self-belief sustains you. Stubborn stars see you taking one step forward and two steps back, gaining wisdom along the way. Your learning curve has been steep recently but you are now more mature and empathetic. Repay acts of kindness to balance the karmic scales.

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

This week soul-searching comes easily. You reflect on mistakes of the past and ponder what can be done differently. Sentimental solar forces work in your favour, and give you a newfound sense of self. You get credit for compassion shown towards others, and demonstrate composure in the face of adversity.

The art of compromise comes with practice. You are put to the test, as you struggle to meet people half way and sacrifice some of your own needs. Doing deals with the devil is a step too far but making allowances for an adversary is doable. Your popularity is currently high in social circles but muted with family members.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Mainstream issues are your bread and butter as Mercury keeps you abreast of current affairs, pop culture and the latest hightech devices. Your opinions are certain to chop and change but an authoritative air gives you extra credibility and respectability. Saturday is a super day for travel, study and making long-term plans.

You are ambivalent about resolving a personal problem. First you want to fulfil a long-held dream, and then allow destiny to take its course. Friends and family continue to enable you, but their patience is probably wearing thin. An innate tendency to avoid unpleasantness means choices are often made on your behalf.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

At the moment you excel at platonic relationships but shy away from intimacy. Friends are less emotionally demanding, while loved ones grow needier by the day. Venus chills the air and the closer you come to people, the faster resentment grows. Listen to Cancerian writer George Sand: “Admiration and familiarity are strangers”.

All-inclusive stars demand equal treatment for everyone. Hence, you stop judging people on status and adjudicate instead on character. Capricorn has an inbuilt sense of right and wrong, but aloofness often masks your noble intentions. Take more time to listen, learn and love selflessly.

Ways to save money while travelling Aside from time, financial restrictions have always been a major roadblock for budding travellers because, let’s face it, going overseas does cost a fair bit! However, with just a few simple money-saving strategies tucked under your belt, you can explore the world without breaking the bank. 1. Know when to go Simply by knowing which time of the year to travel to your destination, you can save stacks of money on everything from flights and accommodation to shopping. Every country has a tourist high season and with it a low season as well. Lonely Planet, one of the world’s most recognised travel guides, provides information on the low season for every single country so you know which months are the best for affordable travel. Avoiding the high season also means you won’t be stuck amongst the crowds! 2. Go for public transport Forget about renting a car or catching a taxi everywhere – jump aboard the public transport options on offer or, if feasible, consider walking. Getting to grips with your destination’s public transport network can be a fun way of acclimatising to your new surroundings and can be a relaxing way to see the sights while saving money. 3. Be savvy with accommodation Accommodation is another key area where you can save money if you think smart. Hostels are considerably cheaper than hotels and are the best way to mix and mingle with fellow travellers and locals. The numerous options available nowadays mean there is a suitable option for everyone. If you must stay at a hotel, avoid the major chains and try to find one that has as many free perks as possible, for example those with breakfast included. 4. Make the most of your cards A few simple decisions made before you even hop on your plane can help keep a lid on expenses in the long run. Touch base with your local BOQ Branch to discuss Travel Money options. Buy some foreign currency to save on exchange rates and organise a Multi-currency Cash Passport that allows multiple currencies to be loaded on the one card that can then be withdrawn at ATMs around the world.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

ADAM KEARNS Feel better, sleep better, act better

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

Top three tips for good health? Don’t be too strict or hard on yourself, if you miss one workout or have one unhealthy meal the world won’t end, just keep up the healthy lifestyle the next day. Visit the doctor, especially as you get older. Finding out your medical history can be a great motivator to lose weight and get things like high blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Figure out what you enjoy or what challenges you – for example, some people like competitive sport, some people prefer to go for a bush walk or do something social with friends. You need to discover what you find fun and challenging because exercise and health shouldn’t be a chore! A daily ‘must do’? Just do anything that gets your heart rate going. Even if it’s taking the dog for a walk

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Usually anything that challenges me personally. I love running as it’s only me who can control my results and it’s against the clock when doing a race. It’s about as simple as it can be and I find it motivating to get faster. I just love sport in general so I’ll give anything a go but most of the time it’s usually individual sports – running, golf and tennis seem to be the activities I do most and I can control when I do them. for half an hour just get off the lounge and get moving; the more often you do it, it will become a habit. Biggest health/fitness misconception? That you can out-exercise a bad diet. When it comes to overall health the best thing you can do is a good diet. No matter how far you run or how long you spend in the gym nothing can undo a diet full of chocolates, soft drinks, alcohol and pizza!

life & style

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? For me it’s a combination of two things: being able to do my job properly – 12 hour or longer days of bending, lifting, carrying etc can be pretty demanding and I’m doing my best to not get injured. I also notice the simple things like my mood improves, I sleep better and generally feel better day to day after a good workout and a healthy eating day.

How does fitness feature in your life? I’m an Intern Paramedic with NSW Ambulance, about six months from finishing my qualifications. I also have a Degree in Exercise Science and consider health and exercise something incredibly important in my life – something I think about every day. My job can be taxing with night shifts and 12 to 14 hour shifts but I find eating healthy and exercising regularly can make a huge difference to how I feel at the end of a work week. I regularly run, visit the gym, play competitive basketball and competitive golf.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

19

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’? I try to set goals or challenges. Finding a running race like a 10km or half marathon and paying an entry fee is great motivation to get out and get running. Also a health check-up with the doctor is a great way to face the reality of your health and get you motivated to make changes to your diet and your exercise levels.

Exercise doesn’t need to be overly fancy DAVID STEIN Owner & Manager of Fitec david@ fitec.com.au

Simple works best when it comes to finding the right exercise for you

LOCAL RADIO

Friday 7 March 2014 the western weekender – west life

Last week we talked about how important exercise is. This week I’ll tell you the best exercise in the whole world: It’s the one you actually do. And that usually means you actually enjoy doing it. I see people get so caught up in what the best exercise is or routine to do; magazines are full of articles saying which fancy exercises in what order and to do four sets or exactly 15 reps... no wonder people get confused. They show someone with an eight-pack for abs doing complicated exercises like sitting balanced with your legs in the air swinging a medicine ball from side to side, and then throw in words like ‘core’ or ‘functional’. I can’t remember the last time I had to sit on the floor, balance my legs up and swing something heavy side to side in real life, that’s not really functional. Simple works best. Try starting with a walk and put a couple of bursts in where you go fast for a bit. If you want to check you’re getting a bit fitter, go out and pick a specific route, for example from your gate to the shop for your paper. Time how long it takes you to walk it the first time; the second time try to get a bit quicker, and third time a bit quicker again. It’s not rocket science but it is science. As your times get quicker you will get fitter. It’s called progressive overload. Each time you finish a bit tired your body recovers and repairs whichever part is worn out to where you started, but – and this is the secret that it’s all about – it then recovers a little bit more! For example have you ever worked with a shovel and rubbed the skin away on your hands? After a rest the skin repairs thicker than it was, a callous, so next time it can handle even more work. You finish a run and you’re out of breath? Your body will over repair so next time the same run makes you less out of breath! It’s an incredible system and it’s yours. Your body is made to move and improve, so do something you like, don’t make it too fancy and make it fun. This is how you really get results!

Chooks are making a backyard comeback

How to get more accurate test results

Chooks make great pets and are also environmentally friendly. They can eat up household scraps and provide fertiliser for the garden. The other great benefit is lovely fresh eggs. The humble chook has made a comeback in our backyard. Some of us will remember our grandparents’ chicken coop. Chickens are fairly easy to care for and cheap to feed and make great interactive pets. It is best to get chickens at point of lay. This means that you don’t end up purchasing a rooster and that they are fully vaccinated against most serious viral chicken diseases. You also will not have to wait too long for them to begin laying – usually within six weeks. Remember that roosters don’t fit into normal suburban backyards since they are very noisy. Most hens need little in the way of medical care. Worming and checking for mites is all that is needed when first purchasing them. Following that, monitoring them for weight loss, noisy breathing or changes in comb colour are important. Start handling them after you bring them home. Once they are used to being handled they’ll sit quite calmly. Chickens are relatively cheap to feed and they can eat garden waste, kitchen scraps and they can even graze the backyard for bugs and grass. You can even sprout grain and grow plants for them. If they are fed on grain alone they eat about a cup of grain per day. When feeding commercial layer mixes make sure that there are no additives such as colourants as we want those beautiful eggs to be as healthy as possible. There is even a commercially available Australian organic layer mix. It is important to provide a chicken coop for your pet chickens where they will safely retreat to as darkness falls. You can purchase a ready-made chook shed or build your own. There are also portable coops known as chicken tractors which can be moved around the backyard. It is important that the chicken coop is fully secure as things like foxes and other predators can dig under and climb over fences. You will also have to provide nesting boxes for the chickens to lay their eggs and roosts for them to sleep in.

On Wednesday night, March 19, the St Marys/Penrith Diabetes Support Group is meeting at 6.30pm at the Gloria Jeans cafe, St Marys Village located on Charles Hackett Drive, St Marys. The speaker for the evening is Robyn Jenkins, a local accredited Diabetes Educator. Everyone is welcome, especially family members of someone with diabetes. For further information, speak to the team at Martin’s Chemist by phoning 9673 1010. One of the important things to do if you have diabetes, or are at risk of developing diabetes, is to test your blood glucose (sugar) levels regularly. Testing regularly gives yourself and your health professionals a clear view of how your body’s levels change in relation to your diet, exercise and any medications. The more stable you keep your levels and within optimal range is the best way of reducing your risk of diabetes and its complications. Many people with diabetes do not test often enough and a big reason is the pain involved. However the testing process should be almost pain free if done correctly, so here’s a few tips to get more accurate testing results with less pain. 1. Wash your hands under warm water prior to testing to improve your circulation; this will make it easy to get the required amount of blood. Make sure your hands are completely dry as not to affect the reading. 2. Use a new lancet (needle) every time you test. Lancets become less sharp from testing and an old lancet will make a bigger hole in your finger, cause more damage and be more painful. 3. Use your lancet device on the shallowest setting possible. 4. Gently rub your finger for 10 seconds before you test. By increasing circulation it is easier to draw blood. 5. Use the lancet on the side of your finger, not the middle, as this is much less painful. 6. Use a different finger for every test. This lets your fingers heal and means less pain.

Who deserves the royal treatment? Did you catch any of the Academy Awards presentation on TV this week? It was fascinating to watch huge crowds flocking to see the stars as they entered the auditorium on the red carpet. Thousands gathering to get a brief glimpse of the celebrities. They were amazing scenes. TV cameras. Photographers. Those looking for interviews. There’s no doubt, the movie stars were given the royal treatment; treated as someone special. Do you know that God thinks of you as someone special? You are precious to Him. In the Bible’s gospel of Luke, Jesus tells two parables, one of a shepherd searching for his lost sheep and another of a woman who had lost her valuable silver coin. The shepherd does not give up until he had found his sheep. The woman, likewise, turns her house upside down until she finds her coin. When the farmer finds the lost sheep he brings it home and calls his neighbours together for a huge celebration. So too, when the woman finds the lost coin, she calls her friends and neighbours to come and celebrate. Jesus’ point is this, “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” In other words, even the angels in heaven rejoice and celebrate when any person turns back to God. Imagine God and the angels in heaven rejoicing because you come to God in repentance and faith! This can be your experience. You too can be given the royal treatment by even the angels of heaven when you turn back to God. This is how much you matter to God.

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

Future plans Appointing a Power of Attorney is vital as you get older, according to financial experts lder Australians are being advised to take control of their financial affairs during NSW Seniors Week (March 15-23) and put the right measures in place for their finan-

cial and legal future. According to NSW Trustee and Guardian, far too often older people mistakenly put their trust in others to do the right thing and this can lead to financial abuse. Sue Field, NSW Trustee and Guardian

NORMAN’S NORMAN’S SCRAP SCRAP METALS METALS

Fellow in Elder Law at the University of Western Sydney, said while people often think they can hand over their affairs to one of their children, it is quite common for the siblings not to agree with their parents’ choice. “Stories abound about unscrupulous attorneys who have fraudulently taken the money and assets belonging to the client. Unfortunately sometimes this happens when a family member is the attorney,” she said. “But you really need to think about appointing a Power of Attorney sooner rather than later – if you begin to lose your mental capacity, it will be too late and you may be left unable to cope with your financial affairs. “It is important for seniors to understand that while it may seem like a flattering responsibility they are handing to someone they know, the role of an attorney is a delicate one with legal consequences for the attorney if they mishandle finances.” Imelda Dodds, CEO NSW Trustee and Guardian, advises seniors to carefully consider who they choose as their attorney under a Power of Attorney. “The role of an attorney is to manage financial affairs, so the attorney needs to have the financial acumen to pay bills and look after bank accounts, and if required, the ability to manage investments such as income from shares and rental properties,” she said.

bond with people quite easily and are a great option for a senior

NSW Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian announced last week that the Opal public transport electronic ticketing system is now available at St Marys, Penrith and Emu Plains stations. However, the system is not yet applicable to local seniors. The NSW Government is in the process of rolling out the system, which offers public transport users the option to replace the pay-as-you-go paper tickets with a single electronic card. But as it stands, seniors have been left out of the roll-out of the new technology. The Opal card is only available for people in the ‘adult’ age group, but is expected to become available for seniors at a later date. Ms Berejiklian said that for now, seniors would have to use the current system. “My message to seniors and pensioners is; do exactly what you are doing,” she said. “The $2.50 doesn’t change at all but there will be a separate Opal card for our seniors and pensioners as well as for students and other concession holders.” The State Government will make an announcement when it is available for seniors.

Pets provide seniors great companionship Australians clearly love their animals. According to Animals Australia, more pet owners reside here than anywhere else in the world. And for good reason too. Particularly for the elderly, owning a pet has shown to significantly benefit a person’s health and wellbeing. As people grow older their homes often become quieter, emptier places. Children move out and begin building lives and families of their own and partners pass on. Unfortunately this means that the concept of home can quickly become associated with the feelings of loss and loneliness. Companionship is extremely important as it provides a feeling of security, which in turn helps combat depression. The idea of investing time and money into another living thing may seem daunting at first. However, it is clear that the benefits of pet ownership far outweigh the losses – perhaps a few chewed shoes. Pets are a good incentive to exercise, and can make it a less tedious experience. Taking a walk around the local park with an excitable companion may give you more appreciation for the sights and sounds around you. These outings with your pet also provide you with the opportunity to socialise with fellow pet owners in a safe and friendly environment. With so many pet options available, you can find an animal that suits your needs perfectly. An obvious option for a more mature person seeking a pet is a dog, as these animals are known to easily form strong emotional attachments to people. Of the infinite number of dog breeds out there, recent media reports have suggested smaller breeds like Maltese and Chihuahuas are the ideal fit for elderly people. While lively, they are easier to control and need less living space and exercise than larger dogs. Worried about the considerable life expectancy of a young animal? Consider taking a visit to a local shelter where dozens of more mature pets await a loving owner to take them home. Your low key lifestyle will likely be a welcome change for an animal that has been mistreated in the past. It’s an opportunity for you to teach an old dog new tricks! If owning a pet is a viable option for you, I encourage you to consider it.

The unique group, which celebrated its inaugural meeting today (Friday, March 7), will see arts-loving seniors visiting local art, music hot-spots and events together over the coming months as part of the broader organisation, the University of the Third Age. “Enjoying the arts is different for everyone; it can challenge your perceptions, bring you joy and is uplifting,” said group coordinator, Eileen Ross. “People who like the arts are almost a hidden population in the area and it is not easy to find smaller events when you are on your own. “Exploring these events as a group is

Bev has lived in Penrith since 1986 and isn’t someone who likes to make plans. For eight years Bev was the leader of Scouts and she was also a major part of the Country Women’s Association, which she thoroughly enjoyed being able to contribute to. She now lives spontaneously and “if a better offer comes up, I’ll take it”, she says. A regular day for Bev would involve reading or being a part of the social committee at Mountain View Retreat Retirement Village. Here she helps to organise fun events such as bingo on Mondays, carpet bowls on Tuesdays and Thursday “chatter” afternoons. avier College is a co-educational Catholic secondary college situated in Llandilo, offering students state-of-the-art modern facilities and providing a quality Catholic education. The Xavier College philosophy is underpinned by the Catholic tradition and values, which students and families are encouraged to embrace. These values acknowledge the sanctity of creation, the dignity of the individual and the importance of forgiveness, hope and reconciliation.

The Xavier College motto, ‘For the Greater Good’, encourages students to be more loving, courageous and just in their decision making, while the College crest captures the past traditions of St Francis Xavier and the hopes of the future, which will be shaped by the students. From the beginning of 2014, the College has implemented the Bring Your Own Device program, which is an exciting new initiative allowing students to bring their own mobile device that will aid in their learning experience.

Technology boost for local students

atholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP), has selected St Joseph’s Primary School Kingswood to participate in their pilot iLearn Anywhere project. The project targets Year Four students who will each receive an iPad Air to support their learning at school and at home for the remainder of their years in primary school. Teachers will also be provided with an iPad Air and Teaching Educators from CEDP will work with them in the classroom.

C

The iLearn Anywhere project, facilitated by purposeful, effective and creative teaching, transforms learning. Students move from being content ‘consumers’ to own the learning by becoming content ‘creators’. “To be selected as one of the eight primary schools participating in the project is a reflection on the great work our teachers do and their commitment in providing a rich learning environment for each of our students,” said a very excited Fran Jackson, principal of St Joseph’s Primary Kingswood.

I used to struggle ... but now school work’s FUN! M Most tuition centres are franchises. The Tuition Place is independent and local. T This gives you three important advantages: T 11. Teaching methods and resources are tailored for the children of the Penrith area, a, not dictated by a franchisor from far away.. 2. If you have special requirements, things can be adapted for you quickly. 3. The tuition is more affordable, because a big chunk of what you pay doesn’t go straight to a franchisor.
