Q UP FOR A SLICE OF THEATRE HISTORY

03

NATHAN TAYLOR chats with Q Theatre producer, Katrina Douglas, about the local theatre company’s new 2013 season plus their incredible 50-year history…

I

t’s hard to believe that Penrith’s Q Theatre is celebrating their 50th anniversary and what better way to mark the occasion than with a bumper 2013 season. The local theatre company, now based at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre (JSPAC), began its humble start to life when six actors launched it with a prolific lunchtime program at the AMP Theatrette in Circular Quay way back in 1963. But increasing difficulties in the 1970’s, such as a shortage of fresh short plays for lunchtime performances, changing audience demographics and a rapidly rising rent bill for the venue led to a reassessment of its policies and aims. Evening performances at their Circular Quay base helped diversify the company’s profile somewhat, as did the occasional tours to the outer western suburbs of Sydney after 1972. In 1977 the company’s artistic director, Doreen Warburton decided to quit Sydney altogether and re-establish the Q at Penrith as a regional company. Penrith City Council gave the Q an old railway institute building, now the site of the State Government building, to convert into its new home as an intimate, thrust-stage theatre. From there it staged its annual subscription season of five or six plays. In August 2005, the old railway institute building was officially closed. The new Q Theatre was born in October that same year inside the newly refurbished JSPAC. 50 years of exciting, groundbreaking theatre later and the Q is getting ready to party with Australian playwrights front and centre of the celebrations.

Q Theatre producer of the last five years, Katrina Douglas, described the upcoming season as one of the best in its half-century history. “The 2013 season definitely has a strong focus on Australian writing, probably more than previous years,” she said. “We have a number of new plays from Australian writers ranging from David Williamson, who is one of Australia’s most well-known playwrights, to Lachlan Philpott and Finegan Kruckemeyer, who are both writing some of the best contemporary theatre around. “I think we really want to mark the 50th birthday, and we have been talking for a while about using the Australian plays that have been produced by the Company over the years as a focus of the actual 50th birthday event which is on December 2.” The Q’s new season kicks off in February with the Ensemble Theatre production of David Williamson’s comedy ‘Managing Carmen’. Williamson’s brand new play is an uproariously funny comedy about football, sex, gender and slingbacks. In the play, Brent Lyall is a freakish young sporting talent with a beautiful girlfriend and two Brownlow Medals. Managed by the legendary Rohan Swift, Brent’s blossoming career and the millions that come with it seem assured. But Brent has an explosive secret on the verge of becoming public. As the Q enters its senior years, it’s appropriate and fitting that the Q Theatre Company work with local seniors on a new production titled ‘Dance Hall Days’, which premieres in April. Part verbatim theatre and part social dance, this cross-generational

2013 definitely has a strong focus on Australian writing performance will bring the world of the dance hall back to life. ‘Dance Hall Days’ stars Phillip Dodds, Nick Atkins, and Jane Phegan. In June, the brilliant and sparkling comedy ‘Noël and Gertie’ will land at the Q with two of Australia’s rising stars of musical theatre, Lucy Maunder and James Millar. In July, Lachlan Philpott follows his 2012 smash hit ‘Truck Stop’ with ‘Alienation’. Inspired by interviews with Australian alien abductees, ‘Alienation’ will divide believers and sceptics, presenting audiences with the question ‘how far will you go for what you believe in?’ August sees internationally acclaimed playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer return to the Q with ‘Tough Beauty’. The production is

written in response to the escalating statistics of young female violence. In September, the hilariously mad crew of ‘The Wharf Revue’ swoop in again poking fun at politics and popular culture with a sharpened satire stick. Ms Douglas said the huge array of productions will mean there’s something to suit everyone’s tastes. “For people who love comedy they will enjoy ‘Managing Carmen’, ‘Noël and Gertie’ and ‘Camp’ because they are fun and wellwritten. For people who like more challenging work, ‘Alienation’ and ‘Tough Beauty’ are not to be missed,” she said. The 2013 Q Theatre season is on sale now. FREE SOUNDS AT BAND CLUB

O

ne of Sydney’s hottest and most experienced live bands, Seattle Sound, are back in town tonight, December 7, to rock out the St Marys Band Club for free. That’s right – free! As part of St Marys Band Club’s weekly After Dark concert series, Seattle Sound will perform a completely free gig, playing the biggest hits from bands at the height of the 90’s grunge era, plus all the songs we love from today. Beginning in 1996, Sydney’s number one cover band formed when bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were taking the world by storm,

selling millions of albums across the globe and creating anthems for a generation. Interestingly, these bands all came out of one place – Seattle, Washington, USA. Back in the early days of Seattle Sound their playlists were flooded with the popular hits of those Seattle-based bands. Over time they’ve had to update, adapt and develop with people’s changing tastes in music. “We originally started doing Seattle sound music but now it’s not really like that,” lead singer, John Perry said. “So now in a two-hour show we’ll do two sets, the first with the Seattle bands we’re well-known for and the second with music by the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, U2, Green Day, Kings Of Leon, Foo Fighters and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.” Seattle Sound hit the Keller Lounge stage tonight, Friday, December 7 at St Marys Band Club from 9pm. The gig is free. For more information call 9623 1211 or visit www.stmarysbandclub.com.au.

atchbox Twenty are recognised internationally as one of the most popular and successful bands to emerge in the last decade. Since the enormous success of their debut album, ‘Yourself or Someone Like You’ in 1996, which went eight times platinum in Australia, Matchbox Twenty have established a huge Aussie fan base, with a number of sell out tours. Their popularity is even further enhanced with the solo career of frontman Rob Thomas who has earned himself three Grammy awards, 11 BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc) awards and twice named Billboard’s

Songwriter of the Year. With a huge list of charted songs from five albums and Rob Thomas’ solo career, Matchbox Twenty have proven they are in it for the long haul. On the back of Matchbox Twenty’s enormous worldwide success, Aussie tribute band Mad Season have landed to recreate all the excitement and passion of Matchbox Twenty as a full five-piece rock band. Mad Season are highly experienced and talented, and know how to get a crowd working. Their recreation of such mega hits like ‘Push’, ‘3AM’, ‘Unwell’, ‘She’s So Mean’, ‘If You’re Gone’, ‘Bright Lights’ and ‘Disease’ are so authentic that you’ll think you are hearing the real thing. Don’t miss Mad Season when they hit the Pioneer Tavern tonight, Friday, December 7 at 9pm. Entry is free. For more information call 4736 4466 or visit www.thepioneertavern.com.au.

lint Eastwood makes his first appearance in a film not directed by himself in 19 years in ‘Trouble with the Curve’, also starring Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake. Gus Lobel (Eastwood) has been one of the best scouts in baseball for decades, but, despite his efforts to hide it, age is starting to catch up with him. Nevertheless, Gus refuses to be benched for what may be the final innings of his career. The front office of the Atlanta Braves is starting to question his judgement, especially with the country’s hottest batting phenomenon on deck for the draft. The one person who might be able to help is also the one person Gus would never ask: his daughter, Mickey (Adams), a driven and ambitious associate at a high-powered Atlanta law firm. Against her better judgement, Mickey joins him on his latest scouting trip to North Carolina, jeopardising her own career to save his. ‘Trouble with the Curve’ is in cinemas now and is rated M.

he little Aussie movie that took the Cannes Film Festival by storm, ‘The Sapphires’, is out this week on DVD and Blu-Ray. Inspired by a true story, ‘The Sapphires’ follows four vivacious, young and talented Aboriginal girls from a remote mission as they learn about love, friendship and war when their all-girl group, The Sapphires, entertains American troops in Vietnam in 1968. Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy) and Kay (Shari Sebbens) are discovered by Dave (Chris O’Dowd of ‘Bridesmaids’), a good-humoured talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm and a great knowledge of soul music. A genuinely feel-good movie, ‘The Sapphires’ is a fun musical comedy that showcases the amazing voice of Jessica Mauboy. Following in the footsteps of ‘Red Dog’, this is an Australian movie that has the quality to compete with American films, both in production and performance, and is well worth viewing.

he LEGO video game franchise has been very successful for titles like ‘Batman’ and ‘Indiana Jones’, so it’s only fitting that ‘The Lord of the Rings’, one of the most successful movie franchises in history, has its turn. ‘LEGO: The Lord of the Rings’ is based on the motion picture trilogy and follows the original storylines of Tolkien’s novel. The entire family can team up in pairs as adorable LEGO mini-figures to experience countless dangers, solve riddles and battle formidable foes on their journey to Mount Doom. The game takes players along on the adventures of Frodo Baggins and his unlikely fellowship as they set out on a perilous journey to destroy the One Ring and save Middle-earth. Kids, tweens, teens and parents can traverse the Misty Mountains, explore the Mines of Moria, knock on the Black Gate of Mordor, and partake in epic battles with Orcs, Uruk-hai, the Balrog and other fearsome foes while harnessing the humour and imagination of LEGO.

rammy-award winning singer Bruno Mars has returned to the music scene with a bang with his second studio album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’. The album has already generated hype, with many critics applauding the singer’s unique style and his ability to seamlessly fuse pop, rock, reggae and hip hop. Mars collaborated with renowned song writers such as Jeff Bhasker and Mark Ronson, who have worked with Kayne West and Beyoncé, for this 10-track album. The singer himself has stated that this album will be more musically varied than his award-winning first album ‘DooWops & Hooligans’, which sold over six million copies worldwide. The lead single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ has already been called one of the best songs of the year by some critics. The song has already passed one million digital sales and has received positive reviews with praise for the singer’s smooth vocals and retro style. However not all of the songs are as

fun and quirky as the lead single, reflecting Mars’ diverse style. The album also features Mars’ trademark ballads including ‘When I Was Your Man’. The singer is currently planning the ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ promotional tour, which includes a visit to Australia.

he Adelaide Hills’ Wicks Estate has released a couple of great drops in time for Christmas – a 2010 Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir that’ll be ideal with canapés as guests arrive for Christmas day lunch or dinner, and a delightful 2012 Sauvignon Blanc for those opting this year for a cold seafood spread at the Festive table. Winemakers Tim Knappstein and Leigh Ratzmer fermented the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir separately for their bubbly, and then blended them to get exactly the combination of flavours they were looking for – a sparkling drop with a wonderful zesty freshness to get the party going, and a palate to go perfectly with a range of canapés or simply on its own in the lead-up to lunch or dinner. Their 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is one of those easy-drinking wines that goes ideally with lighter meals, in particular seafoods, with typical tropical fruit and passionfruit to the fore and hints of lime. The 2010 Sparkling is $25 and the 2012

Sauvignon Blanc $18. One for lunch: Julie Barry never ceases to amuse us with the diversity of whimsical, often irreverent remarks she comes up with about the exceptional wines she makes under her equally whimsical (and exceptional) Good Catholic Girl label. In one such comment, she said her James Brazill 2009 Clare Shiraz “makes it almost sinfully easy to drink”. This is a somewhat full-bodied drop with wonderful aromas that jump from the glass: dark plums, chocolate and warming spices. Certainly one of her best ever, she attributes its success to the fruit from her Limerick vineyard at Armagh which she regards as being the finest to date, and fortuitously picked on March 7th which, according to Julie, happened to be “the feast day of St Celcius of Armagh…” We’ll take her Good Catholic Girl word for it, and while she suggests it goes particularly well with Irish Stew, we’d rather share it with turkey on Christmas Day. Price: $30.

BEE GEES’ SPIRIT WILL NEVER FADE

conic Bee Gees member Barry Gibb is returning to Sydney for a series of shows during his 2013 Mythology Tour. His first Sydney Entertainment Centre show on February 8 has already sold out but fortunately for die-hard fans Gibb has announced a second show to take place on Wednesday, February 27. Gibb has designed the Mythology Tour as a tribute to his late brothers, Maurice and Robin, creating what is sure to be an emotional concert experience. The Australian tour will be the first of its kind around the world and will feature Barry Gibb with his incredible band that includes his son, guitarist/vocalist, Stephen, Maurice’s daughter, Samantha, and Beth Cohen. “I’m absolutely thrilled that Australian music lovers have embraced the Mythology Tour so whole-heartedly, given that it’s the country where it all began,” Gibb said. “I am truly humbled by this response and can’t wait to perform these songs again on

home soil.” With a career that has spanned more than five decades, Gibb stands as one of the most prolific singer/songwriter/producers of the modern era. As the eldest brother and creative leader of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb, along with his brothers Maurice and Robin, represent one of the most successful vocal groups in rock and roll history. With their signature vocal style and blending of musical influences, the music of the Bee Gees has crossed all musical genres from pop and R&B to country and rock. As a songwriter, Gibb is hailed with contemporaries such as Lennon and McCartney, enjoying the most consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number ones of any songwriter. Catch Barry Gibb live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on Wednesday, February 27 at 8pm. Tickets start at $99.90. To book call 136 100 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.au.

t’s that time of year again when the decorations go up and shopping centres are packed. And what better way to celebrate this festive time of year than with some sweet Christmas music! Already some of the world’s biggest artists have released their annual Christmas compilations and we’ve put together a list of what you should listen to whilst enjoying these holidays... Artist: Rod Stewart Title: Merry Christmas, Baby This is rockin’ Rod Stewart’s first Christmas album. ‘Merry Christmas, Baby’, an album of standards and traditional songs finds Rod Stewart joined by a number of A-list guests, starting with Michael Bublé, who duets with Rod on ‘Winter Wonderland’, ‘We Three Kings’ is a duet with Mary J. Blige, and the title tune ‘Merry Christmas, Baby’ is a duet with Cee-Lo Green. A perfect Christmas gift, too.

Artist: Michael Buble Title: Christmas (Special Edition) It was the most popular Christmas CD of 2011 and now the always cool and smooth Michael Buble has re-released it as a special edition. This 2012 special edition has four bonus tracks including a very special greeting from Michael himself.

Artist: Lady Antebellum Title: On This Winter’s Night ‘On This Winter’s Night’ is a 12-track festive album that sees the group perform all the old favourites plus an original penned by the trio. Artist: Taylor Swift Title: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection Taylor Swift is the flavour of the month right now, so it’s only fitting she too releases a Christmas album. In fact this album was released when Taylor was an unknown back in 2007 but has been re-released on iTunes just in time for Chrissy.

CONVENANT-999 BOOK 1 BY ELISSA ANNE

T

he book, Covenant-999 Book 1: Victori Song is the beginning of a trilogy involving satanic ritual abuse, emotional disorders and family relationships. The story begins in 1994 in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. Loraine Stewart escaped Coven-999 with her newborn niece, Kia. Loraine has tried desperately to protect the girl from the witches who intend to sacrifice her to the gods, but she has failed. Nine-year-old Kia Stewart has just been kidnapped. As Loraine’s search for Kia begins, Victori Robertson is also searching for something. After reading about the missing girl, Victori discovers links between her own past and that of Kia Stewart. She realises her destiny is tied to Kia’s fate, but can the girl be rescued in time?

Covenant-999 Book 1: Victori Song has a local connection with its author Elissa Anne, who has already written the next two books in the trilogy. Elissa grew up right here in Penrith where she teaches piano and composes music and novels with a desire to share God’s message of grace through her talents. Covenant-999 Book 1: Victori Song is now available in paperback format from www.amazon.com or through her website www.sbpra.com/ElissaAnne. Elissa Anne will be launching her debut novel at the Emu Plains side of the Nepean River on Sunday, December 9 from 11.30am to 1.30pm. There will be a free sausage sizzle plus meet Elissa herself and grab a copy of Covenant-999 Book 1: Victori Song for only $15.

CHATTER ON THE BOX with Nathan Taylor So, it’s finally summer and are you like me with nothing at all to watch? ‘Summer Heights High’ and ‘Angry Boys’ creator/actor, Chris Lilley, dropped some awesome news last week that he is working on a brand new show for the ABC to launch in 2013. He’s not giving away any details as to what it’s about or if any of his previous characters will star but one thing’s for sure it will be regarded as one of the most highly anticipated shows of the New Year. As a fan I really hope Tongan bad boy and “Dicktation” graffiti artist Jonah Takaluareturns gets a run. He is without a doubt Lilley’s most popular character to date. Channel Seven favourite Matt White has quit trashy current affairs show ‘Today Tonight’ amid speculation the show itself could also be on the way out. Industry chatter has speculated that Seven may replace the program in 2013, recently advertising for reporters, producers and researchers around the country. Watch this space. Speaking of Matt White, he’ll join ‘Sunrise’ newsreader Natalie Barr as host of the 2013 ‘Carols in the Domain’. The muchloved Christmas event will star this year’s ‘X

Last week Channel Nine announced ‘She Bangs’ singer Ricky Martin will do the honours and replace Keith Urban on ‘The Voice’ next year. Many fans of the show have panned the move but I for one think it’s a good one. It doesn’t matter if Ricky hasn’t topped the charts in years, he still comes with plenty of cred and I guarantee you people will fall in love with the Latino singer all over again as if it was 1999. ‘Footy Show’ fans will get an earlier dose of the program next year with the “Fatty” Vautin hosted program switching from its traditional 9.30pm slot to prime-time at 8.30pm. The move comes after improved ratings in 2012 plus to combat Channel Ten’s growing ‘The Game Plan’ show, which also airs at the same time. It’s sure set to be a bumper year ahead for footy lovers! Foxtel has added eight new channels to its popular ‘Foxtel Go’ app. Viewers can now watch FOX8, SoHo, Lifestyle You, Lifestyle Food, Lifestyle Home, FUEL TV, SPEED and Discovery Turbo MAX. This now brings the total number of live channels to 30. All I want now is Sport! The Weather Channel will be no more come 2013, instead it will be known as Sky News Weather after the media network took over the management and operational responsibility of the channel. Lastly, missing ‘Home and Away’ and struggling to find something to watch over summer? Then give one of my alltime favourite shows, ‘Cops’, a go – 7pm weeknights on ONE HD. Beginning way back in 1989, this show is regarded as one of the first ever reality shows and after 23 years has only gotten better with age. Don’t be a ‘Bad Boy’ and miss it!

ocal radio station Vintage 87.6 has gone from strength to strength since it launched a few years ago, and it has now become an important part of the local community. Last Wednesday, representatives from local businesses called by the Vintage 87.6 studios in Jamisontown for a morning tea to network, and hear about what Vintage is up to. A special guest was Channel Nine News presenter Peter Overton, who mingled with guests after flying in on board the Nine helicopter. The Wednesday morning teas are a regular event at Vintage, aimed at allowing business people to network and learn more about their local radio station. Vintage 87.6 plays some of the best songs from a time music will never forget. The playlist includes hit after hit, plus the best local presenters including Ross Hutchison. You can even hear the Weekender update on Vintage every Thursday afternoon, with a preview of the following day’s paper.
