The Reading Room Book series: The Vegetarian by Han Kang Review by Asmara Ahmed Qaisrani ( @TheDoctorReads) Horror, like we saw in Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter Trilogy, doesn’t necessarily have to be about ghosts and blood and gore. Sometimes, true horror lies in the banality of everyday routine, where a single rejection sets off an incendiary chainreaction of events.

Told from the perspective of the protagonist’s husband, sister’s husband and sister, the first thing that strikes you about The Vegetarian is the clarity of its prose. It is informed by a dark lyricism, poetry stemming from a deeply pathological place in each narrator’s mind. Never once do you feel as though you are reading a translation, a feat that speaks of the prowess of the translator, Deborah Smith. Ms. Kang’s novel fastens onto your attention immediately yet without resorting to the usual suspense gimmicks so favoured by her contemporaries across America and even Britain. You are willing to follow the twisting thread of her narrative down until the very last turn because you become so invested in the growing horror surrounding each narrator’s voice as the protagonist sinks deeper and deeper into her desire for control over her body and what it can or cannot draw sustenance from. Right until the last word on the last page, you are left to marvel at the intensity of this searing narrative and how one woman’s refusal echoes in the actions of those closest to her. It is a compelling story, one that, I, at least, still find myself reading and re-reading.
In spite of these harrowing scenes, Ms Kang’s novel whispers, the echo of her words resonates, revealing the so-called sanity of her more sane characters to be nothing but empty reassurance. Where we would normally pity any other character when faced with such atrocities, here we are compelled to admire her, someone who finally wrests control of her own
body away from everyone else, even if it means the loss a life she once knew. Is there nihilism in such a violent spiral downwards from the exertion of dominion over your own self? Yes, especially in cultures where a woman’s body is everyone’s except hers. In this regards, perhaps Korea is not so different from our own South Asia. Indeed, perhaps, we are one and the same. This is a difficult novel, definitely not meant for light reading. While, it’s slim length means that you can easily finish it over an afternoon or two, you will find yourself wondering about its characters and their damning actions for much longer than that. Perhaps, therein lies the true meaning of haunted.

The Asian relationship to food is a visceral one, and it’s rending apart creates not just the emotional rift at the core of the novel but also echoes in the various instances of violence peppered throughout the novel. The social implications of Yeong-hye’s choice, along with her family’s reaction, and finally, the last scene in the novel where a nasogastric tube is being forced down her throat, all are witnesses to forced conformity and the consequences of resisting.

What kind of art do you most identify with and why? I identify with Realism because I have always appreciated painters from the Renaissance and Baroque era, their paintings have all the elements of realism, drama and expressionism; all on a single canvas with a well composed biblical story; the perfect use of lights and darks.

What is your work influenced by? My work is influenced by the society, classic novels, baroque art and especially women. I usually paint women in particular, my work is more like fiction stories based on “her” life. It’sabout how She has always been considered the secondary object.
How would you describe your pieces? Well it’s a tough question as I can’t put it in a one liner. Every piece I have created till now has a different story from the other and if I was ever able to describe them in a few words than it will be hard for me to continue my work.
Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? That’s a big yes, I have had many responses received for my work and the first one was during my thesis display when this person said “aurtainkyun paint keen, har koi karsaktahai”. I was a bit shocked but I guess everyone has a different point of view. Another one was during my time at NCA when I was in the start of my third year and after a bad jury someone came and asked me that this person is asking the price of your painting and wants to buy it and that person was Sir Imran Qureshi, I still cannot describe that moment and I still have the photocopy of the that check.

What was the very first piece you created? As far as I can remember the very first art piece that I created was a stick figure dinosaur. I had a special attachment to history as a child as well. I guess “art kakeera” was always there.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? I would love creating a piece for a lot of places not anyone in particular, the British museum, MOMA etc.... reality check, I am still a baby in the art world but I would actually want to create paintings for such amazing places. Name a few artists who inspire you. Da Vinci , Frida, Lucian Freud (love his thick paint application), JeffKoons , Saddeqain(simply amazed by his murals), Salman Toor, it’s a long, never ending, list.
In what way do you think Art in Pakistan should evolve? I pretty much think that it has evolved a lot since the past few years, many people are aware of the term art but still believe in the concept of buying art for the sake of luxury, whereas it should be something one can talk about rather than being just a display in a living room next to a sofa with matching curtains.
What is your ultimate vision as an artist? Like Don Delillo said “time and death is the ultimate vision of an artist, it was not something Iplanned to do”, nothing is planned it just comes your way but that doesn’t mean you stop working hard.

The city of Florence; where the architecture and Renaissance era art are so well preserved, it’s like you’re walking within a painting. Florence is love. From the people, to the buildings (which house hundreds and hundreds of years old stories worth in architecture!) to the food. This is a city which is cared for by its people and it shows. Within Florence, we visited the Duomo and Bell tower which was a stones throw from the hotel we were staying at –you can climb the Duomo to get a view of the entire city. Something that is beautiful in every light possible for the human eye.

The Uffizi and Accademia were the first places we went to see – a family of artists; of course visiting galleries was a must! And as an artist in Florence, you cannot afford to miss seeing the great sculpture of David by Michelangelo. Today, not many will appreciate what once was, but when you give yourself time to look, to really look, your heart swells when you see the works of the greatest artists. Art isn’t just in the galleries of Florence. Around the city, there is street art in every nook and corner, especially the L’Arte sa Nuotare which means “Art knows how to swim”. This mainly features portraits of popular figures in scuba gear! We also visited Dante’s house and saw his earlier works, what he wore and where he slept. This is a disputed theory location wise but was nonetheless worth the visit. As stationary fiends usually do, we sought out stores for fun essentials and came across a store called ‘Scrivimi’ which till date sells wax and seals for letters and quills with ink. I took the liberty to get my own personalised seal with gold wax and a bunch of stationary sets as letters are something I still cherish and write to this day. Out of the four days there, we spent three exploring Florence itself and the fourth, a day
trip to Pisa after contemplating between Chianti where we could see the vineyards or one of the seven wonders of the world. The tower of Pisa still stands tall with its unintended tilt while hundreds of tourists pose in the funniest of ways to capture pictures of themselves saving it from falling. Would I go back to Florence? Yes. And if I could, I’d want to spend the rest of my living days there.

The name “Zuria Dor” literally translated from French means “white gold.” Reflective of our timeless aesthetic even whilst experimenting with playful cuts, the name of our design house is emblematic of our inclusive team dynamic. By not naming it after any person we underscore the importance of each individual who works here taking ownership of the brand. While Zuria Dor was originally conceived as an exclusively western wear label, we have expanded into bespoke eastern couture pieces. Inspired by a combination of eastern and western cuts and techniques we hope to provide a fresh perspective in a market that can often be a bit repetitive. We enjoy experimentation on all fronts, whether with regards to a diverse colour palette, embellishment techniques or silhouettes. The Zuria Dor girl or woman is an eclectic individual who is inclined towards unique pieces and values innovation in design. We love collaborating closely with clients on completely bespoke creations, as their ideas serve as a catalyst for our creativity. It is very much a two-way conversation between customer and designer leading to completely personalised ensembles that the wearer can feel amazing in. For us fashion is as much a celebration of the true self, as it is about a fantastic outfit, so we actively encourage our clients to weigh in with their thoughts. Often customers will be inclined towards “blingy” embellishment, but we have successfully introduced subtler 3D techniques as well as more antique finishes. We aren’t a trend led brand, so while we may be inspired by the colours of the season, the general market popularity of specific silhouettes does not affect our design process. RIS Metropolitan RYMUN’16 begins in Capital ISLAMABAD - The Roots Youth Model United Nations 2k16 commenced with an inauguration ceremony integrating mesmerizing Chinese, German, Turkish, Egyptian, African and other global ethnic presentations by talented students of the Roots International Schools. The opening ceremony included performances by students depicting and highlighting diverse colors of different ethos. These representations incorporated cultural harmony and peace around the globe. The presentations were meticulously appreciated by all the honorable guests as well as the delegates. The ceremony officially commenced by the speech of RYMUN Secretary General Shamir Butt and the Director General Arbaz Khan. Later, Adviser to Metropolitan RYMUN 2K16 President, Palwasha Iftikhar Malik also greeted the guests officially. Students from various campuses of Roots International Schools gave electrifying performances at the inauguration ceremony. On the occasion, the Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training, Interior and Narcotics Control in Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Cabinet, Mr. Baligh-ur-Rehman and the Minister of Planning, National Reforms, and Development, Mr. Ahsan Iqbal also graced with their presence. While addressing the audience, the Federal Minister for Education, Balighur-Rehman stated how RYMUN provides the chance to all participants to develop their communication, negotiation, and cooperation skills and also sharpen the sensitivity and analysis skills in understanding many of the world’s conflicts and problems. He added that the young generation gets immensely benefitted by conferences such as these, since they provide a platform to all the students to assess the critical strategic problems and the evaluation of the UN Security Council in addressing pressing issues such as the Independence of Kashmir. The Minister also stressed on how the schools can play an important role in bringing Islamic values and culture to the surface and instilling them in our youth. The Minister of Planning, National Reforms Development, Mr. Ahsan Iqbal talked about the vital role of youth in a country’s development and explained how the world needs their active engagement. He said that the youth of the country have the potential to make Pakistan more peaceful, prosperous and developed country.The Minister, Ahsan Iqbal pointed out that today’s Pakistan had changed as compared to that of 2013 and country has come out of various crisis which it was facing in 2013. As many as 1000 delegates from across Pakistan are participating in the Metropolitan RYMUN’16 Conference and they will discuss multilateral issues including countering violent extremism, ensuring freedom of expression, adapting to climate change and promoting the human rights of migrant workers, says a press statement issued here on Thursday. The inaugural ceremony of Metropolitan RYMUN’16 was embellished by
the manifestation of Ambassador of Tunisia, Ambassador of Bosnia, Muhammad Omar, the First Secretary to the Ambassador of Egypt to Pakistan and the Ambassador of Turkmenistan. All the ambassadors appreciated the students’ efforts and highlighted the expectations they have about the impending four days and motivated students to accomplish with the same enthusiasm and vitality. Roots International Schools CEO Walid Mushtaq addressed the delegates and articulated his projections from the conference. He commended the unprecedented optimism and enthusiasm that the delegates brought to the conference. Model UN simulates the actual workings of the United Nations and related organizations. An excellent way to acquaint young people with the inner mechanisms of international political structures, MUN affords competitors an in-depth look at the subtleties of the United Nations. Participants, known as delegates, take the roles of UN diplomats from various countries and must faithfully represent their adopted country’s views on a given topic. Those who excel in debates while consistently representing their country’s views on the necessary issues are considered outstanding delegates. Over the next five days, the conference will simulate four UN committees: United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM), Disarmament and International Security Councilsaid the press statement. “In addition to engaging delegates in extensive discussion of realword issues, such as climate change and cross-border water management, the conference also includes networking events to celebrate the richness of culture and diversity of the entire world,” added the statement. The opening ceremony was followed by the colorful and rich cultured ‘Global Village’, where all the delegates signified the countries they had chosen for debates. The Global Village stalls and appearances were adjudicated and marked by Panel. In this episode delegates colored the floor with the cultural

Overcoat Trio The trifecta of overcoats that
greeted us in this episode was nothing short of astounding. From Rachel’s patchwork design to NimraRafiq’s serious disco coinage, the overcoats were the real stars of this song. Shahab Hussain was rocking the mango yellow kurta with the hot pink embroidered waistcoat proving that men too look as good in color (especially when they have a beard as glorious as Hussain’s).

Pakistans ecommerce market had previously been dominated by foreign owned or funded eCommerce players but bytes.pk was the first truly homegrown start up to take a significant share in the eCommerce market. weekend magazine done a question answer sation with Mr. Muhammad Khanani owner of Bytes.pk as given below What was your vision behind launching bytes.pk. How is it different from other online stores? When I launched bytes.pk my primary aim was to enable people to do more. In the start of 2015 when we launched the Pakistani ecommerce market was more geared towards high profit margins rather than towards high volumes. The masses had been largely ignored and the gebral consensus was if you want a niche product you can’t get anywhere else you will find it online at a high mark up. While this was reaping in good profits for the retailers at the time they were proving unable to grow their volumes. When bytes launched our primary target market was the masses and to cater to them we begun offering used mobile phones and cheap mobile phone accessories. Over the last 9 months we have shifted our focus from electronics to fashion. But our way of working and aims remain the same. Two of the key differentiating factors between us and other online stores is that we hold inventory of everything we sell and thus we do not cancel orders because of something being out of stock. In Pakistan even today more than 90% of online retailers do not have any inventory of their own thus many top online stores cancel upto 40% of orders due to unavailability of products. Our second key differentiating factor is that we have a large number of in house brands that allow us to sell great quality products at low prices. By owning the brand and controlling the complete production process we can keep costs siginificantly low and thus reduce prices. Over the last 2 years we have attracted some of the top brands from around the world. In the almost 2 years we have been around we have bought more than 300 foreign brands to Pakistan from more than 40 countries. Ever since we entered fashion we have shifted our focus to local brands who better understand the local needs and tastes when it comes to fashion. One of the reasons for our success has been our ability to attract major brands and not only bring them amazing sales but rather also help them build up their brand. Some of the top local brands we stock include Shehla Chatoor, Maria B, Sapphire, Elan, Zara Shahjahan, Orient Textiles, Al Karam, Al Zohaib and Shariq Textiles. Brands have on an overall been very satisfied with out services. What were the reasons behind venturing into the fashion industry? What are your goals for the future? Being an online retailer one of the most important aspect for us to consider is volumes. While electronics was generating good revenues the profit margins were very slim and at the same time the order volume growth was slow. The more orders we can generate the more the word will spread about us and thus we initially added fashion as a way to increase our volume. In Pakistan middle to rich women have the highest disposable income and this will only grow over the next few years as more women start working and thus will have even more disposable income. As women join the workforce it will also increase their likeliness to want to save time and shop online as it can be tiring to go out to shop after a day at work. So over the next year we intend to continue to focus on growing our womens fashion division while adding more products for women. Currently we lack pret clothing for women so that is something we will also be adding soon. You have been able to establish a high business profile at a very young age. How do you manage your time and what hardships you had to tackle in order to make a name in the market? Being young I feel gives me a lot more time which gives me an edge over my competitors. I am available 24/7 and as is my team which I perfer to keep more young people in. With very few other commitments I have been able to focus all my time and attention on bytes. We are available for our customers when our competitors arent. We have deals going live around the clock. For example our support and product updating team is live 365 days a year 24 hours a day so whether its eid or midnight youll always find new deals and new products. Being young can also be challenging as many people try and take advantage of your age and cheat you. At the same time its also good in a way as many people underestimate me due to my age and this gives me an edge over competitors. As far as building a name goes I think the key reason I was able to do it was due to the support of my family. My parents have provided amazing support and whenever I needed to get hold of someone or something my parents were right there to help me find what I needed.
My father has introduced me to 100’s of vendors in fashion and all the success is because of him. Our fashion department has been built on his support. What is your opinion on the culture of entrepreneurship in Pakistan? Do you think our education system is in line with the ground realities of the market? I think in Pakistan people really love starting businesses and there is a lot of passion when it comes to entrepreneurship. But at the same time there is a major lack in a desire to innovate. Everyone wants to start a business but no one wants to innovate. Everyone is just interested in copying what someone else is doing and replicating that. This goes for both business models and products. If one product is selling well at one store everyone else will try and get the same product. All this does is leads to a price war and eventually all the companies go out of business. A great example of this was with Frozen Yoghurt shops in Pakistan. After the success of the first brand 6-7 more brands popped up within a few months and the market got so saturated that everyone went out of business. I think our overall education system does not promote innovation. I feel the main reason very few Pakistani companies have been very successful in expanding to international markets is the lack of innovation. If we continue to fail to innovate as the world gets more globalized we will eventually be left with an economy dominated by foreign multi nationals. Before starting a business Pakistani entrepreneurs should focus on first building a key selling point which will make it tough for copycat businesses from stealing their market share. At bytes everytime we launch a new category or product we can spend months before the launch ensuring we have enough of an edge that even if people launch similar companies or products we will continue to dominate the
