Omer Nabi is an INTERIOR/furniture DESIGNER AND FOUNDER OF STUDIO O and the recently launched O Art Space. This week we sat down with this prolific entrepreneur TO TALK ABOUT His life, career and design inspirations.
How and when did you decide on a career in interior design and architecture? I got absorbed into a career in interior design due to my lack of interest in banking. Upon my return from the US with a degree in Economics and International relations I joined an investment bank. However, 6 months later I found banking to be not my cup of tea. My creative juices compelled me to do something different and shifting into a new house gave me that opportunity. I created a few modern pieces of furniture which were highly appreciated. Many people wanted similar furniture which was not available in the market. So I left banking, made a small collection of furniture and accessories and never looked back.
Do you have an educational background in the field? No, I have no formal education in interior/furniture design. While I took many design courses in college just for fun, my degree is in Economics and International relations. What is the philosophy behind Studio O and O art space? When and how did you initiate the two projects? StudioO has been around since 2000 and we aspire to be a leading interior design house where one can find complete interior solutions for one’s residential/commercial

Our talent outreach program is currently showcasing furniture and accessories from 5 young and extremely creative design houses, namely Heritage home, Number 9, Reza Zahid Atelier, Turning tables and MAS Architects. We also have a craft outreach program under which we are currently promoting a small collection from Sindh, Taxila, Kashmir and as far as Kalash Valley. In fact at this moment only one person from Kalash Valley carves beautiful sculptures. We are trying to create an apprentice program for him so the craft does not die with him. O Art space just recently came about as a response to a dearth of art galleries in Lahore. At our space we plan to showcase not only celebrated artists but also want to be a launching pad for young artists. What are some of the few things that inspire your work? There are so many things that inspire my work – I can’t really
pinpoint any particular thing. The light from the rising sun; the fish in the sea; an empty space; a nice painting; Good music; a scene from a movie etc. The list is endless. How would you describe your design aesthetic? My design aesthetic is definitely modern/contemporary. Personally I tend to be minimalistic and understated but for my clients I tend to be more eclectic. What does word Art mean to you? Art is life. You’ll often hear people saying how they tried out certain fitness programs for a certain number of days, but when they stopped, they gained it all back. The scale is actually a ver;y inaccurate way to track your progress. Muscle weighs more than fat; so while a person might weigh less, they might actually be a lot unhealthier than a person who has more muscle and weighs more. A better alternative would be to regularly get your body fat percentage checked, or to use a measuring tape to see where you stand.
What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their goals? This is my favourite question! Many people set “people-
goals.” Your goal should be to become a better version of YOURSELF, not anyone else! Everyone has a different build and physique, so setting up another person as your goal is not only unrealistic, but you’re simply setting yourself up for failure.
Do women bulk up if they do weight training?
One of the reasons why women steer clear of weight training is because of this huge misconception. Women don’t contain as much testosterone and other hormones in their bodies, which men generally have, in order to build as much visible muscle as them unless they supplement. So no, women do not necessarily bulk up if they do weight training.

t’s sad when someone very smart uses this phrase. We’ve seen it, and mourned it. What is it that makes a person forget that their skill with language is an accomplishment? What makes them reach blindly for phrases such as these, that describe an unrealistic amount of joy in something as banal as a picture of a product. No, it’s not giving you life at all. It’s making you a brain midget. Shut off your phone immediately and read the back of the shampoo bottle in the loo instead. Yeah we’re all depressed and in need of inspiration, tell us when you find the secret to fixing that, but don’t try and convince us via an instagram post, that anything such as your new top is “giving you life”. Ugh!!

With a line-up of writers that spans the length and breadth of Pakistan, alongside others hailing from Sri Lanka, India, Iran, Egypt and New Zealand, the scope of Shandana Minhas’s vision is slowly revealed to be a of a more surgically intimate nature-- the end of not just love, but the end of naivety at the hands of awareness. What could be a more traumatic break-up than that? Soniah Kamal’s macabre ‘The Party Giver’ would give Stephen King a run for his money, a short story that skilfully captures both the melancholy of marriage and the desolation in the aftermath of a tragic loss. I have never felt such growing horror at the hands of any writer as much as by Madam Kamal, and over the length of hardly three pages, no less. Kudos! Imran Yousaf’s harrowing ‘Comfort Food in Karachi’ is no less horrifying but for far more visceral reasons-- Mr Yousaf not only manages to find the exact pressure point in the mind of his readers but to skilfully carve out every bloodied image with the double-edge knife of his words like a battle-hardened surgeon. He is one writer, I, for one, cannot wait to read more of. What I found most captivating about the collection was the numerous ways in which the theme was interpreted by poets-- be it through Harris Khalique’s poem on the 1947 Partition or Aziza Ahmed’s much more personal interpretation ‘Computer’. So, not only does the collection showcase the far too unappreciated talent of Pakistani writers, it also (again, finally!) gives a voice to the emerging voices of Pakistani poets writing in English. The result is a searing glimpse into the future of literature in Pakistan-- bright or bleak depends on what support we, as readers and consumers, choose to give. As Shandana Minhas says, ‘Spend Rs. 350/- on a coffee and moan about Pakistani publishing while you drink it, or spend Rs. 300/- on a book and support a new Karachi indie press.’ It is truly that simple. May your reading of this gem of a book be as energizing as your coffee!
