Thirteen reasons why is Jay Asher’s debut novel for teenagers and a very beautiful addition to the psychological Young Adult books which convey a very difficult and strong message. This book is not easy to read, and this is not criticism but a compliment because, Thirteen Reasons Why’s main theme is peer pressure, adolescence angst, drugs and many other factors that can make growing up unbearable for many teenagers. “A lot of you cared, just not enough.” Thirteen Reasons Why is about the aftermath of suicide, Hannah Baker, a teenager who commits suicide and the way Asher has portrayed her anger and hidden hurt is remarkable. The person in question is Clay Jensen, an intelligent teenager who finds a package in his porch with no return address. Inside the package are seven cassettes each side marked to number thirteen with the last side blank. And he must listen to all of them because in it are all the reasons which lead to the death of Hannah Baker, who is ironically, Clay’s secret crush. He is supposed to follow the map and has to pass the cassettes to the next person on listned to it, and it dawned on me how often we casually hurt others and never consider the way we might have affected them. Jay Asher very finely delivered his message: everyone is responsible for their actions and that our actions can also affect others. The cassettes amazingly tackle the reasons behind

So please, please before you throw an insult at someone’s face or a remark at someone’s appearance just imagine receiving it back, and please be careful: with your words, actions and choices, they will eventually come back to you.

Hannah’s death and Clay learns a lot of things about him and others, the things they did to their class fellow, and how that triggered her actions and how it ruined her. “A flood of emotions rushes into me. Pain and anger. Sadness and pity. But most surprising of all, hope.” Thirteen reasons why does not offer easy answers, it asks you questions, it makes you question your own actions and words. But it offers one very important thing; hope. Thirteen reasons why is a very important book and delivers a very strong message. It is for those who take teenagers and their issues seriously, it is for those who know and understand the trials and tribulations of teenage. rdu has suffered from a serious lack of reliable online resources. Finding synonyms has never been an easy task. But the time is over and it is good news for all those who often felt lost to find suitable Urdu words. Musharraf Ali Farooqi, an acclaimed novelist and translator adds another feather to his cap by making an online Urdu Thesaurus (UrduThesaurus.com) as well as a free Android app for mobile phones. He launched Urdu Thesaurus through his publishing house Kitab. It is the world’s first service of its type. There are more than 40,000 words and over 20,000 sets of synonyms which are all searchable through the built-in search bar. The Urdu Thesaurus has attracted the attention of people all over the world and according to Mr Farooqi it is being used in 74 countries. In an exclusive interview with Weekend he talked about the significance of Urdu Thesaurus and the challenges he faced in pursuing this venture. Faizan Hussain: What persuaded you to make an online Urdu Thesaurus? Musharraf Ali Farooqi: The online Urdu Thesaurus and the

freemobile app were developed because these resources did not exist, and were needed. Before paper became widely available, people relied on their memories to hold great stores of information. That was very portable. Everything could be recalled in an instant if it was already stored in your head. The invention of paper made the transportation of knowledge unwieldy because of the sheer weight of bound books. A comprehensive dictionary of the Urdu language could easily run into twenty fat volumes. How does one carry it around? How does one put all of the volumes on a desk, or even on the floor? Now we are again returning to the time of large, portable collections of knowledge; except, instead of our heads, we store them on small phone-computers, that we carry in our pockets. Because I also do translations I know the importance of a portable Urdu Thesaurus to anyone translating from another language into Urdu. FH: Did you have help in this arduous task? MAF: The compilation and editing was done by me, and with my resources that paid for data-entry and proofreading. The database and app were developed with volunteer help and supervision of our technology advisor Awais Athar. FH: Were you familiar with the principles of lexicography, or did you study them for this project? MAF: I have the basic knowledge and have some ideas of my own about how data should be organized for electronic databases to facilitate complex searches. Some of the data included in the Urdu Thesaurus was already organized in the sources from where it was compiled. But about ninety per cent of the data had to be systematized for the database. As the beta status of the web interface and mobile app shows, it is a work in progress, and a lot more data, and several lexical fields and features, will be added to it in the coming months and years. For that I hope to find enough resources, and hire experts. FH: As a lexicographer, do you have to know lots of words? MAF: Typically dictionaries are derived from earlier available sources. So most work today is of a compilation nature. You do not have to know all the words but must have a fair understanding of the multiple senses in which a word could be used. This knowledge either comes from extensive reading of the poetic works, texts from different disciplines, or poring over dictionaries. FH: What were the key challenges that you faced during the five years that you worked on the Urdu

I have a clear idea of the work that needs to be done on developing this language resource in the coming months and years. Some friends and supporters of the Urdu Thesaurus are making an effort to raise the funds and I hope more people will come forward to offer help. FH: What are some of the major sources you used in making the Urdu Thesaurus? MAF: Nine dictionaries were used in compiling the data for the online Urdu Thesaurus. The complete list of sources will be released when the beta version converts to a full version. FH: What was the response from countries other than Pakistan? Could you elaborate on it?
MAF: What I meant was that a lot of our language has become invisible to us because our prose classics are not known to us, and their language is becoming more distant and unfamiliar. We are not reading our classical poets either. Our education system is not helping us develop good language skills. So if our vocabulary is limited to the daily newspaper or the noise coming out of the TV, it is not our language that is dying, but our brains. FH: Did you get any support or positive response at the government level after the launch of the Urdu Thesaurus? MAF: No. FH: Will you also publish the Urdu Thesaurus at some stage? MAF: I have considered the possibility, and at some stage we may carry out the planned publication after the data has been fully organized. FH: What is next in pipeline? MAF: A dictionary of antonyms. Also a fully integrated dictionary so that it is not just the synonyms or antonyms you see but the meaning as well. Later, dictionaries of idioms, proverbs and phrases will also be integrated into this resource.
I am also going to launch a school programme to introduce children to the Urdu Thesaurus. The sooner they learn to use it, the more comfortable they will become with the Urdu language and accessing it. I do not strictly see the Urdu Thesaurus as a simple reference source. I have some ideas about how linguistic resources like dictionaries and thesauruses could be linked to texts to make them popular again. There are also many possibilities of textual analysis and research. But before all that I must first complete the Urdu Thesaurus and Dictionary. The work continues.

Your favourite thing about being a writer: When children like a story and show their admiration, it is very gratifying. What’s a must at your study table: Because the internet service is crap, my cell phone which I now use as a wifi-hotspot.
The advantage of being a lexicographer: People mistake me for a learned person.
Your favourite word or expression in Urdu: There are so many that I cannot recall one.
One quality that a lexicographer should have: Perseverance. And not just for lexicographers.
A tip to increase Urdu vocabulary: Memorise poetry. You will not have difficulty understanding words when you realise the sense in which they have been used.

What does the word Art mean to you? Art is a profession, a passion, its food for the soul. Art is that royal road that leads ones mind to intelligence but only if practiced and understood properly. Pure Art or lets call it Good Art, runs deep in one’s soul; it is the calling of the mind and heart, its a haven in hours of agony, where one is a student and one is always a student. As Degas said, “Art is easy when you don’t know how, when you do, its altogether a different matter”
What was the very first piece you created? I started doing oil painting before coming to NCA, I went to the studio of Mr Kaleem Khan, for training and he arranged me a still life, a ceramic pot with some paint brushes in it and a glass bottle. That was my first piece in oils.
What kind of art do you most identify with and why? Where style is concerned, I identify my work with the Baroque period but the subject matter is contemporary.
What is your work influenced by? As far as the subject matter is concerned its not influenced by anyone as of yet. But if its about technique I am with the great Masters.
How would you describe your pieces? The recent series that I am doing is focused on chickens. For me it works in two different ways. The painting is furnished with calm and quiet but the subject is bold and loud, this interplay leaves a suspense for the viewer.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to create a piece for? Who would it be and why? Not specifically anyone but I do wish that my work should be up there in the collection of the living masters.

Are there any memorable responses you have received for your work? People have responded differently. The one which I wont forget was when during my thesis production, the teachers who came in as the jury thought I did not have enough substantial work. From that day onward I worked even harder, and the pieces that I produced were more powerful technically and in subject. What is your ultimate goal/ dream as an artist? Setting a goal means that one has decided an end for one’s self; a final point to stop at. I dream of going beyond that.
Name a few artists who inspire you. It is tough to answer a question like this, there are so many Greats out there. But Russian and Dutch masters’ work has always been inspiring like Illya Repin, Ivan Konstantinovich and Rembrandt. Apart from that John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Peter Paul Ruben, Richard Schmid, Jeremy Lipking, Odd Nerdrum, the list is endless.

Rise of a King So what are you doing these days exactly, what businesses are you into? A: Well, we are a sort of group of companies now. We are into the medical business which I inherited from my dad, Dodhys Agencies is focused on all sorts of medical equipment, used in hospitals. Another line of work for Dodhy Agencies is Industrial Safety equipment which is used in industries, as the name suggest. A second business which is Interra Energy Solutions, this company is a system integrator which installs and promotes solar energy on a domestic, commercial and Industrial level. Finally, my latest venture is a company called Chemiagar, which produces and supplies industrial chemicals and specialty chemicals to various different industries. Q2: So that must be quite a handful, how do you spend your day? A: That’s true, there is a lot going on
in a day. But believe it or not, we get it all done and plan for growth and I still manage to go to the gym every morning and leave office by 6 in the evening. This is possible only through a very carefully planned company system. Everyone knows there job and knows what to when, the higher management only gets reports and is more focused on expanding and planning ahead, while all the everyday stuff is efficiently managed by the other staff. The fellowship of the system allows us to grow. Q3: That’s great! So how did you start all this? A: Actually I began selling t-shirts, phone cover, factory work wear etc, things like that when I was 16. Basically I was selling whatever I could get my hands on. In my that summer I made around good money for a 16 year old and I did not want to stop. So, on the advice of my
Q5: Wow, big plans so what is your ultimate plan? Your goal? A: Well, good question. I am going to be one of the top businessmen in Pakistan. Whichever business Dodhys Group will
Q8: So young, and very successful, makes you a very eligible bachelor? Any plans for marriage? A: Haha, well no noting at the moment. No plans at all.
Q4: Looks like you have been growing since you started, so what’s next for you? A: Well, I have a number of things in mind. But some of them which we are very soon going to be venturing into is textile trading, which I have already partnered with a friend of mine. We are also going to establish a startup Incubator for young entrepreneurs, however this incubator will be different from others. A part from that, we are also working on an NGO which will be focusing on the educational problems in Pakistan, by adopting government schools. We are also working on some very innovative developments in the Pharmaceutical field. THAT, and a lot of other ideas that are still under development. We have to secure our current businesses and make sure they are running smoothly and in an automated way before establishing others.
Q6: Abdullah, what are your inspirations? A: Hands down, that is Steve Jobs. I respect, admire and look up to Steve Jobs a lot. I have learned a lot from his life and I am a HUGE fan. Also, my dad about him I will say “Everything good in me, comes from him”. That is a tribute. Q7: So tell us about a defining moment in your life, something that made you what you are. A: Well when I was small, I was got a bad result from school once. Naturally I was getting a lecture from my dad, but during the lecture he asked me if it was acceptable for me to see a bad result under MY name? Can a bad result be linked to the name Abdullah Dodhy? This question changed me and motivated me. From then on I began logically thinking on everything, not only business but everything about life. It made me try to achieve excellence in whatever I did, even if it is just thinking in my own mind. After all, every big thing starts from a small thought.
