Qurram Hussain
Qurram Hussain rose to fame with the popular beats of Josh the Band. As one half of this beloved musical band, Qurram has made waves in the Pakistani music industry; be it desi bhangra tracks or fusion melodies, Qurram’s popular compositions range from contemporary lyrical ballades to pumped up Punjabi numbers that set the dancefloor on fire. This week we converse with this supserstar musician on career challenges, future goals and his absolute love for music! When and how did your interest in music develop?
Music was played around my house so there was always a musical influence in that sense. But the curiosity of making music and playing instruments developed in my mid-teens when I was in Pakistan. We knew a gentleman who used to play keyboard in our lane in Karachi, from there I got some tips, on how different instruments work. The advantage of playing keyboard is you have to learn different instruments. So I started understanding the difference between drums, bass, guitar etc.
What kind of music did you listen to while growing up?
Growing up I was very much into rock, alternative. Obviously I listened to Pakistani and Indian
music too but my active interest focussed on bands like Guns and Roses, and then eventually towards Pearl Jam.
Do you come from a musical family?
I don’t come from a musical family. My parents are actually both doctors. They love music but I definitely did not have any entertainment connections through the family as such.
What are some of your influences as a musician?
As a musician my influences have changed over time and they keep changing because new music comes out every day and I’m still learning. Earlier influences would include Slash on Guitar and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam as a writer because his melodies and his lyrics were very powerful. R D Burman
in Bollywood was a huge influence. Of course Pakistani bands like Vital Signs, Junoon we used to listen to a lot so definitely they played a part. George Michael, his music, his vibes were excellent. So too many to name, they keep going.
How often and for how long do you practice?
I’m actually not that strict with practice, I don’t do it religiously. I think that because I’m mostly self-taught and I like to explore. My practice is listening to music, trying different things and break down songs and learning from them. I’m not a learned musician or singer so I didn’t grow up with the habit of practicing stuff. I think I need to do that more to be honest, but I try to keep practicing my creativity and learning. To me that’s more important as a musician.

The most important thing I just need is just a little bit of peace and quiet before I get on stage. That ideally just puts me in a state of mind where I am comfortable in the audience in front of me and I can just be myself and let the music flow
The most important thing I need is just some peace and quiet before I get on stage. That ideally puts me in a state of mind where I’m comfortable with the audience and can be myself letting the music just flow; while also becoming friends with them in a natural way.
Describe your journey in the Pakistani music industry? How did you find your way in?
It was a very smooth transition; we released our music in India first, and then I brought it to Pakistan personally. As a Pakistani releasing the album in India, I just came on my own and we had the video done. I approached a record company that we already had a relationship with and asked for its official release in Pakistan with local promotion and
a local push. My main point of focus (as a Pakistani) was to relate to local audiences instead of the work being perceived as an international album. Luckily we made that local connection with audiences which enabled a smooth transition to the Pakistani market.
What do you most love about this industry and what is something you would want to change? This sounds like a clichéd answer but the best part really is the fans. They are dedicated. Our industry is not organised and it still has a long way to go from a business organisation point of view. The artists don’t have ways they can progress easily in a systematic fashion. There are no record companies anymore, so I think that is lacking in our industry. But like I
said that the fans don’t give up and the fans find music even though it’s not that easy to find. I think that’s a very big deal that we still have those kind of dedicated fans that stand behind the music and go against the odds, jump through hoops to make sure they come to the concerts. And that is our biggest asset.
What has been the most difficult thing in your journey so far?
I think as an artist staying current and in the scene is always a tougher battle than getting in the scene, at least for me. I think that I have had times when it’s been tough for me to just put out stuff that I thought was interesting and then I got too busy making music rather than listening to music. So after a few years of back and forth, now I feel

Lipst cks...
Have you ever imagined what makeup your favourite heroine would wear? We have and since lipsticks are the legends of the makeup world we thought we’d bring you five of literature’s finest female protagonists and the five lippies they would reach for time and time again!

f you have read The Millennium Series by Stieg Larsson then you will be familiar with the main character and the ultimate heroine of our dreams, Lisbeth Salander. Lisbeth, in short, is Heroine a bit of a nightmare but at the same time, she’s brilliant, The Millennium series takes pleasure in Lipstick hurting men who MAC Satin Lipstick in Cyber abuse women, has no regard for rules or regulations but she does have her own code of right and wrong that she abides by. She is not your average heroine by any conventional standards but she is a fierce, anti-social computer hacker who we imagine would have gone through bullets and bullets of MAC’s lipstick in ‘Cyber’. Cyber is an intense almost-black almost-purple colour in a satin finish which would be perfect for Lisbeth because we don’t think she’d care much for a high-shine gloss.

Sayuri Nitta aka Chiyo Sakamoto Memoirs of a Geisha Lipstick
CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine ‘Intime’
R
emember Sayuri from Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha with her blue-grey eyes and that bright red pout? Sayuri’s real name was Chiyo Nakamoto, a poor fisherman’s daughter who through life’s circumstances becomes Kyoto’s premier geisha. As a geisha her makeup has to be on point (understandably) at all times. In the early 1900s (before and after WWII) which is the time period portrayed in the book, on point makeup for a premier geisha was what we would call white face paint and red lipstick. We’d like to see that come off with a makeup wipe! We bet Sayuri just wanted to wear a ‘no-fuss’ lip somedays; one swipe of the lipstick and totally low maintenance. But she wouldn’t just stick with a tin of Vaseline—she would opt for Chanel’s (high-end of course) Rouge Coco Shine lipstick in ‘Intime’ (that’s ‘intimate’ in French for you) that’s hydrating on the lips and provides a slight shimmer. So if she ever, found herself locking lips, at least it wouldn’t be a messy affair!
Dolores Haze Lolita Lipstick
V
MAC Russian Red
ladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is controversial but has attained a classic status. It is the story of a love affair between middle aged Humbert and his 12 year old stepdaughter Dolores who he secretly refers to as Lolita. Dolores or Lolita is adolescent, seductive, flirtatious and mercurial, and she competes for Humbert’s affections. But she gets bored of cultured Humbert whose increasing demands drive her further away— eventually running off with Clare Quilty who wants her to participate in child pornography. If you’ve seen the movie you would remember Dolores with piggy tails and always sucking a lollipop or ice cream. Yes, all very suggestive and seductive but what we’re interested in is the lipstick she would probably steal from her mother’s boudoir and wear for Humbert. Something bright to draw attention to herself and something matte for the summer time and all that snacking she gets up to. MAC’s intense bluish-red matte lipstick in Russian Red is the perfect choice for Lolita. Kat Von D’s lipstick in ‘Underage Red’ would be ideal too!
A
hh Lady Macbeth, one of our favourite characters to hate in Heroine Shakespeare’s work. A brief recap: she is the wife of Macbeth (the play’s antagonist) a Scottish nobleman who is goaded into Macbeth killing the existing King. Who does Lipstick Kat Von D Everlasting the goading? Why Lady Macbeth Liquid Lipstick in ‘Witches’ of course! She becomes Queen of Scotland but feels way more guilt than any reader would expect a villain like her to. We think Lady Macbeth might appreciate the irony of Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, an intense black being called ‘Witches’. The Three Witches greet Macbeth with a prophecy that he shall be king and they represent evil, chaos and darkness. Lady Macbeth and the ‘Witches’ liquid lipstick are a perfect match!

Scarlett O’ Hara
Heroine
weekend | lifestyle
T
he one female heroine that stands out as impetuous, petulant and vain in literary fiction for us, is Scarlett O’ Hara from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. Scarlett Heroine embodies Southern charm and what the kids nowadays Gone with the Wind would call ‘extra’. Lipstick She’s spoiled by her Christian Louboutin Silky Satin Lip Colour wealthy parents but in ‘Very Prive’ the Civil War sweeps away the lifestyle that Scarlett is accustomed to, leaving her destitute. Despite falling on hard times, we think Scarlett would still enjoy a luxurious lipstick such as the Christian Louboutin Silky Satin Lip Colour in ‘Very Prive’. It’s a rich plum, red colour that feels sensuous and luxe. It is encased in a solid metal body that resembles a precious vial and its turretlike crown cap is topped with a small ring threaded with a silk ribbon turning the lipstick into a necklace. Can’t you just see Scarlett wear this around her neck, stroking it and reminiscing about her past life? We sure can.
