A Weekend Getaway to the North

his year, with the increasing heat and parched Ramadan days, we decided to explore the Northern Part of Pakistan, mostly Kashmir. It was a sight that I had longed to see, as beautiful as I had heard it to be.

We started our journey from Islamabad. Packing all our chips and water bottles, we were very excited and could not wait to get to our destination. Going all the way into Murree, the roads had shown a great improvement from the last time I visited. With the music volume very high, Pakistan seemed more and more beautiful with the passage of my journey. Had I ever known that this was how fascinating my country was, I would have cancelled all my trips to Europe! The diverse mountains were as green as ever withy gushing waters streaming down the valleys; the river Neelum flowed all across my journey. The local residents told us that the water was so deep down there that a normal sized truck can easily drown in it. The River Neelum rushes through the lesser Himalayas and is Azad Kashmirs main attraction.

Caution: Driving around the River Neelum is not child’s play!

We had started our journey from Muzzafarabad. The weather in Muzzafarabad was somewhat similar to Islamabad, and we wanted to be somewhere cooler. We decided to spend a night there, and that was when I got the opportunity to visit the famous Rahat Bakers. Their ice-cream flavors were so original!

I would highly recommend anyone who travels to this area, to stop by and give their ice-creams and milkshakes a try! You will not be disappointed.

We left Muzzafarabad early morning the next day, with a heavy breakfast.

(Tip: While travelling, make sure you are awake, out and about by 8! Heavy breakfast will keep you going for the entire day.) Our journey was a long one,

almost about three and a half hours; the view was breathtaking! Mountains overlapping each other, the trees as lush as ever; it felt as if we had been revitalized after the long Ramadan days.

The people there were very warm and welcoming. We had lost our way when we reached towards Pattika, and stopped to ask a nearby fruit vendor for directions who gave us more detail than we asked for. Beautiful little girls and boys waved at us every time our car passed by. The weather by this time had also cooled down as the closer we got to our destination, he Lower Neelum.

In our language, Neelum means blueish, referring to the color of fresh water. Similar is the case with the great River Nile of Egypt which is locally pronounced as Neel. What was most fascinating were the number of Indian checkpoints we came across, many mountains along the way were Indian Territory. The time on my phone had also changed to half an hour ahead every time we passed Indian Territory. The Neelum Jhelum Dam was also under construction and had shown great progress.

The Lower Neelum was a sight that cannot be missed; verdant mountains surrounding the valley, with cold water rushing through the streams.

It was such a peaceful sight. The Fahrenheit had dropped to 51 from a 95!

Even though the place where we stayed was not all that great, but it was an unforgettable experience. We had dinner by the River, and by this time it had become very cold. We asked for a bonfire which finally made us feel a bit warm. Playing cards and ludo, we didn’t realize that the night had gone by. By the time we decided to sleep, it was four in the morning, so we decided that we might as well stay up for another thirty minutes and see the beautiful sun rise.

The Upper Neelum Valley was our next destination. The roads to the Upper Mountains were very rocky and dangerous. Without an experienced driver, it is recommended not to visit the place. With our fingers crossed and eyes shut, we finally reached the top most point. Since that day, there was a 70 % chance of rainfall; we had to leave as soon as possible, because of expected landslides. We left for Murree, and met rain on our way. It was the most beautiful journey I had experienced, which made me extremely happy and blessed, to know that this is what our country holds.

The best part about the two Neelum Valleys is that there is no cell phone network and no WiFi! We got the chance to be away from our phones and experience real entertainment for once in our lives!

I was creating things since I was a child. I consider my barbie houses, and sixth grade slam books as significant as my college thesis work.

What is your work influenced by?

I remember Amin Gulgee telling me to do a solo show when he visited a group show I was a part of at canvas gallery in Karachi.

How would you describe your pieces?

My work is evolving constantly, I can’t be restricted to any particular surface but my medium remains the same; oil. So I guess you can call them oil paintings on indefinite surfaces

Book: All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven BOOK REVIEW BY: Hafsa Usmani

“All the bright places” by Jennifer Niven is the next big thing in the world of YA Contemporary fiction. It revolves around mental illness, suicide and dealing with a huge loss. This book is for the lovers of “The Fault In Our Stars” and “Eleanor and Park”.

This and has very quickly earned a special place in my heart.

“You are all the colors in one, at full brightness.” (Finch to Violet) All the bright places is about two teenagers, Violet and Finch, the male protagonist, Theodore Finch, is bipolar and suffers from episodes of depression and the people around him call him Freak. He has a maniac side to his personality and after a trauma he decides to end his pain. Death starts to fascinate him. He loses the urge to live, to exist.

When I first encountered the word “freak” in the book, I realized there are many people out there,

“You make me lovely, it’s so lovely to be lovely to the one I love... “ The references of letters and of people who took their lives burdened my shoulders and it dawned on me that there might be people around me too, teenagers, who think about suicide daily, who want to end their life. Depression and anxiety can not be seen but that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist.

They exist and they feed on the faith of their victim.

Depression is curable and it needs to be ‘cured’.

We pay no heed to these diseases, we think teenagers can’t be depressed. They’re kids. But they are not kids. They are adults. Confused adults.

“We do not remember days, we remember moments.”

We are all mad here. Just some of us lose the path and fall into the pit of darkness. But if we won’t pull them up then who will? Kurt Cobain once said; “It’s better to burn out than fade away.” Why would you let yourself crumble down to mere ashes? It’s okay if you are not okay. There is always a way out of it.

Holding it all in will only make things worst.

“But I bring it up to let you know that this is the way I feel right now. Like Pluto and Jupiter are aligned with the earth and I am floating. Because it’s not a lie if it’s how you feel.”

The reference of Virginia Woolf and her suicide letter made me think and it made me cry. As if finch referred to her just to justify his own act. The way Woolf’s words used to shadow Finch and Violet’s intimacy made my heart race. As if a storm was approaching but they turned their heads away from it.

“The last wandering.’’

In the end, there’s something I would like to tell you or ask you to do. Please save a life. Or if it’s you who is suffering please save yourself. Do not let the sadness or depression drown you. Life is a gift. You’re tougher than wolves and stronger than waves. You’re more than just your mind and its illness. You’re alive. You’re here. “The thing is they were all perfect days.’’ Just like Woolf said. We are all rooted, but we can flow. We’re gold and we own all the diamonds.

sometimes we ourselves say things to others which might break them or hurt their self-esteem giving way to insecurities. ATBP taught me that we have to be careful with words and how we use them because we might end up ruining someone’s life.

On the parallel side, Violet Markey’s life has been turned upside down because of her sister’s death.Whereas Violet Markey is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and cannot write anymore. She is a girl many of the teenage girls can relate to. Violet taught me that despite the hurt, despite the pain, despite the growing hole in your chest. You can breathe. You can re-build yourself. There is always someone who helps you in becoming whole again. No matter how many times you’ve been torn apart, universe has a way to returning all that it takes from you, just in a little different form.

“People rarely bring flowers to a suicide.”

Finch doesn’t want to accept that he is mentally ill because that would make him ugly and people would pity him. He might have tried to cure him, if society had not wounded his existence and hope.

People effect us. What they say affects us. ATBP taught me that whatever I will do, will come back to me. Whatever I will do, will echo.

Day:1 Not only do I enjoy watching movies but I also love the glitz and glamour associated with the film industry. Movie premieres to me are all about dazzling divas, red carpets and the paparazzi. In fact I was the one who started the trend of grand movie premieres in Pakistan when Cinestar was launched back in 2009. In those days, it was done mainly as a way to promote the new theatre and encourage people to go to the cinema by creating a hype surrounding the new releases. The trend caught on and movie premieres have become a common fixture on our social circuit. Last week, I organized the premiere for a new Pakistani film called Ishq Positive. It marks the directorial debut of the beautiful and talented Noor Bukhari. She also has the leading role and I must say she’s done a fabulous job as both director and actor. The film is a lighthearted comedy with great music and beautiful cinematography. It’s been shot across Pakistan and perfectly captures the beauty of this country. Rising talent Wali Khan and Faria Bukhari, who is Noor’s younger sister, have performed wonderfully in the movie. It has been produced by Dr Shazia M Hussain and Kashif Latif who are settled in the US. The premiere was held at Cinestar and was attended by many celebrities.

Day:4 Islamabad is where my heart is and there is not a single month in the year when I don’t visit the capital city. Well, except for March but that’s because of the pollen allergies I am likely to contract there. I was recently in Islamabad to meet the most gracious and beautiful Asma Tasaduq who happens to be a dear friend of mine. I was there to organize her talented son Shahab Tasaduq’s wedding. We went to see the venue at the Marriott hotel, one of my favourite places because of all the wonderful childhood memories that I have there. While I was there, I made sure to take a selfie for my feature because ‘yeh to zarori tha!’

Day:7 Day: 6 Whenever I’m in Isloo, the capital park is a must go to place for a walk as it’s very refreshing to see the flourishing greenery and the beautiful view of mountains.

I made plans with a Childhood friend Rezz and a gorgeous model Kanwal Ilyaas. We got together and bonded over a cup of tea and refreshments. My brother Asim bhai also joined us and we had a great laughing and gossip session. It is always fun to be around the very talented Rezz.

After a busy week spent organizing weddings and premieres, I really needed a chance to unwind. Thankfully my friend Tony and brother Asimyar were visiting from Islamabad so we decided to catch up over a cup of coffee at Butler’s. Accompanying us was the ‘bright’ girl Ayesha Sana! Ayesha is a dear friend of mine and was always a big star but after that leaked video of her online, her fame has become viral. With so much attention on her, I asked Ayesha how she dealt with the aftermath of the video and I must say her response impressed my thoroughly. She said that she learns from all the experiences that life brings her way and always comes out smiling and with a positive outlook, hoping to better herself. I wish more people thought like Ayesha.

Why did you take up fashion designing?

I was always on the creative side even in school and university but I believe that my mother pushed me in this certain direction as she knew that I would probably excel in this particular field. When I started this back in 2013, not got a lot of support in studying fashion design especially in Pakistan, but anyhow my mother supported me and I think I am here all because of her.

Are you self taught or did you

study fashion designing?

I have done my masters in fashion designing and business communication.

Please share with us features and outlook of your own style?

It’s always a mix of street style casual.

HASHTAG is an attractive and catchy name. How did you pick it up?

I am not the one who picked this name, my brother Saad Mirza, who is the retail and marketing head of the brand, is the brain behind this catchy name.

Tell us about brand Hashtag?

What makes it unique from other fashion houses?

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you have started your brand label?

The biggest lesson that I have learnt during all this time and based on my past experience is that I can’t rely on alternates when it comes to running a brand specially the design department.

I am very conscious about my work specially the detailing, the right color story and most of all fits and I want these areas to be perfect and if not perfect at least something worth displaying in the stores.

Fashion in Pakistan goes according to the tradition or our tradition dictates fashion?

Fashion trends in Pakistan change every year with the changing international fashion trends and many Western touches can be seen also in the Eastern dresses.

The trends and fashions never die specially the trends which are the part of our culture or traditions never get old.

How do you manage creativity and get advantage with the regards to commercial sales?

Every business wants to keep up with its industry’s latest trends and stay ahead of its competitors. Creative thinking — that is, dreaming up new and unique ways of doing things — is obviously a part of that process, along with that, get to know the personalities, strengths, and weaknesses of everyone on your team. This will help you structure

If you could live and work as a designer in any era which one it would be?

I would say ‘TOM FORD’ or ‘FRED PERRY’.

How much marketing is important for a good brand label like yours? And do they influence you in any way on the designing concept?

Marketing is very important for any brand. Only through marketing and effective consumer friendly strategies one can hit the masses as retail is all about reaching the masses. Yes my younger brother Saad looks after all the marketing and retail strategies and gives unique and effective timelines and concepts to build a strong consumer base that we are developing with time.

What advice would you give to young brand teams?

Well I believe dynamics of the retail market are changing very rapidly but there’s always room for improvement and there is a lot of potential for new brands to come up and show what they have in the market as I think every brand as an individual style and people in Pakistan have already adapted ready-to-wear cultural definitely hard work and quality product is the key of survival.

What is the age group of people your brand love to design?

Hashtag is basically catering age group starting from 16 to 28 and we make some off the hook designs for the age group between 30 to 35 as well, at Hashtag we have something for everyone.

How is your brand’s work received internationally?

We haven’t hit the international market yet but we are planning something for it very soon so keeping following us on Instagram (hashtag.pk) for updates.

Emanuele Zamponi is the Creative Director of Nina Neri, a recently launched handbag brand in Pakistan that has created its own niche in the local market. This week we met up with this creative individual for a conversation on design and global aesthetics.

Nur Zehra Qadri: Tell us a bit about yourself ? How did you find your way to Nina Neri in Pakistan?

Emanuele Zamponi: I came to Pakistan around fifteen years ago and I have been working with the Tata family for a long time.

NZQ: What does the word design mean to you?

EZ:Design is an education. It teaches you to live better and it’s a way to translate languages around the world through expression.

People work in images now and not so much in the deepness of the object. I want to point out that there is a difference between a stylist and a designer. Majority of the people, especially emerging artists on Facebook and Instagram, are stylists. A designer is a person that reads and interprets culture, the

a positive message. So even the colours we choose to work with match that disposition. We also want to connect Pakistani culture with European culture. We work with a lot of women and take inspiration from their energy, femininity and sensibility. We want to cater to a new generation who has so many fresh ideas, we propose to them to bring in new ideas. Our desire is to make quality products in Pakistan that are at par with any international brand. We essentially want to present a clean and positive message of Pakistani culture. NZQ: Where do you draw inspiration from?

EZ:Around the globe! From Europe, Brazil, China, everywhere! I translate trendy items in different cultures in different ways. It is also a functional idea in the sense that every designer’s collections are now catering to specific markets, individualizing to the demands and aesthetics ofspecific cultures and marketing styles.I am particularly inspired by the Japanese and Koreans in terms of design. They have a way of looking at things that I deeply admire. They all have lightness in their movement.

Luxury is subjective. For example, Pakistani culture taught me that water is a luxury. I feel currently, in this moment, nature is a luxury.

NZQ: What kind of feedback you have received your work/ideas so far?

EZ: In the digital age, feedback comes in very quick responses.

Mostly I have received positive reviews.

NZQ: What are some of your biggest accomplishments as a designer?

EZ: Everything I do in life I think is an accomplishment because you learn from each step you go through.

nother cult favourite is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser which is a serious industry favourite because not only does the formula feel light on the skin, it injects a healthy glow and dewy finish to the skin—isn’t that what we all want from a summer base? It has SPF 20 which again is better than having no SPF at all because sun protection should be our foremost concern when it comes to makeup.

The product also has an antioxidant vitamin complex that protects the skin from even the most damaging effects of the environment.

tarting at the top of our list is Urban Decay’s latest offering—a brand that never disappoints with whatever it launches. The One and Done Hybrid Complexion Cream is described as the middle ground between a light coverage foundation and a tinted moisturiser.

We’ve been testing it out and we can report back that it’s by far the best thing to slap onto your face in the summer. While we don’t really bother with tinted moisturisers because we can just do that ourselves (mix a little foundation with your daily moisturiser) we picked up this one on a whim and tried it out.

The Hybrid Complexion Cream provides decent coverage, blurs any imperfections and fills in pores. The overall finish is a satin one and we find that it doesn’t get shiny as the day wears on which is what we’re going for in the long hot days of summer.

It comes in three shades: Light, Medium and Dark; though the colour range is small, these three colours cover many skin tones. But what we love most about this product is that it doesn’t feel heavy when you first apply it and soon you forget that you have it on at all.

That is why we have been reaching for this every day of summer.

econd on our list is the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue which comes in a wide variety of shades ranging from Vanilla to deep Sienna. The wide range of shades ensures there is something for everyone.

The coverage this Complexion Rescue provides like most of its counterparts is light and buildable to a medium coverage if you put enough layers of the stuff on. We like to bust this out in the colder months and use it up till spring because it gives a healthy looking, radiant and dewy finish to the skin which is what we’re all about in the cold months when our skin is dehydrated and parched. It could be described as a BB come CC cream crossed with a tinted moisturiser which makes it hard to categorise into one neat category. But just to make it clear, it’s not a foundation— it won’t conceal huge blemishes (go over any blemished areas with a concealer) but it will give dry skin a much needed glow and leave it well protected from the sun with its 30+ SPF.

e haven’t bought into the hype of the BB or CC cream but we absolutely love Dior’s Diorskin Nude BB Creme. In our opinion, it applies more like a light foundation than a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream even.

Unlike other foundations however, it does moisturise, smoothes and corrects uneven skin tone. It has a satin and flawless finish which errs on dewy as the day goes on and especially if you have worn it over a very hydrating moisturiser. The product has SPF 10 which isn’t the highest but it’s still better than nothing and it comes in five shades. It is suitable for all skin types even the most sensitive skins which is why it’s a win-win in our eyes.

Shiseido BB Cream

A

nother favourite at the Weekend HQ is the Shiseido BB Cream that offer full SPF protection of 35 and provides a mid-level coverage that leaves skin flawless. But those of you looking for a dewy finish to the skin look towards the other products on this list because this Shiseido BB Cream provides a matte to satin finish to the skin.

The oil-free texture feels light and quite comfortable on the skin and it’s formulated with Thiotaurine that protects skin from the harmful aggressors in the environment. We love opting for this when we want a makeup look that doesn’t take longer than 10 minutes.

Paragon Studio I have done many photo-shoots in my career but they were mostly outdoors. This was my first experience shooting indoors for a magazine cover and I was kind of nervous at first. In shooting indoors, there’s tons of talent involved like hair & makeup, wardrobe team, the creative team and the technical aspects like lights which is the key for such shoots but I was lucky to shoot my indoor project with the charming Giti Ara – the model and designer Ambreen Azhar, they were both very cooperative and understood the creative needs of the photo-shoot. I had a lot of shots to create and nothing can beat the pleasure of putting your creative skills to test and soon the nervousness turned into a passion of creating something beautiful. I would like to thank the designer Ambreen Azhar, our model Giti Ara and of course the amazing team at Paragon Studio who worked round the clock with me on this project to make one of my memorable projects.
