DECEMBER 2023

A Message from Paul Grove Dear Friends of WEDU PBS, As we approach the end of the year, I'm pleased to share an exciting addition to our programming. Beginning on December 3, we bring you the 3-part series, Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen. Agatha Christie stands out as one of the most celebrated mystery writers of all time. Even if you are only a casual fan, you are likely familiar with Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Murder on the Orient Express, and Death on the Nile among others. As you might expect, there lies an extraordinary life behind the mind that puzzled out all those clever plots and stories. My literary journey and love of mysteries began as a boy in the early 1970s as my mother introduced my sister and me to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series. She also sparked my love of reading with her favorite Reader's Digest Condensed Books. Reading these classics led me to appreciate the transformative power of education, and I'm thrilled to witness the same spirit in our programming. In this new adaptation of Agatha Christie, the brilliant host, Lucy Worsley, applies her historian's powers of investigation to unravel the enigma of Agatha Christie, a woman whose life and work mirror the complexities of the 20th century. It's not just a journey into the world of mysteries; it's an exploration of history, culture, and the human condition—a testament to the diverse and enriching content we strive to deliver. Agatha Christie's life and the narratives behind her stories serve as excellent examples of how curiosity and lifelong learning enhance our individuality.

The Be More Inspired initiative highlights local nonprofits and volunteers for their significant community impact through inspiring stories from these everyday heroes. To honor this year's volunteers, WEDU held a recognition and networking event at the Tampa River Center, hosted by Ernest Hooper.

Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1930, Mel attended Northwestern University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Communications and met the love of his life, Betty Schlesinger. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, serving at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. After moving with Betty and their three sons to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1968, Mel quickly became an accomplished leader in the Tampa Bay community. His impressive career as a shopping center developer began sixty years ago when he founded Mel Sembler Associates, later to become The Sembler Company; he later served as president of the International Council of Shopping Centers in the late 1980s. Mel was also the U.S. Ambassador to Australia and Naura, and later to Italy. Mel and Betty were longtime activists in the anti-drug crusade, creating the Drug Free America Foundation.

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: December 2023

Karla Cruz Benitez What she does at WEDU: I create digital content for our social platforms: Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Time dedicated: I started working at WEDU in August of 2023. Hobbies & passions: During my time off, I enjoy playing games on my Nintendo Switch and Xbox. If I feel crafty, I'll start a painting or crochet project. I have a passion for fine art photography and cinematography. Being able to capture what I see with my eyes through a lens is my most significant form of expression. Favorite PBS program: The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross is definitely my favorite PBS program. There are so many paintings on the show; it feels like I discover a new one every time I watch another episode in the PBS App!

“

Working at WEDU is terrific; my team and everyone in the building are incredibly nice, empathetic, and unique. As a kid, I grew up watching PBS KIDS and always wanted to be a part of educational television. Here I am, many years later, having the opportunity to be a part of WEDU, the same channel I grew up watching at home!

Sustain is a WEDU digital initiative that focuses on the environment and helps you become more sustainable.

Donate your car, motorcycle, boat, RV or even a kayak!

We make donating your vehicle as simple and convenient as possible with fast pick-up and streamlined paperwork. You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

MANY WAYS TO GIVE

Creative End of Year Giving to WEDU PBS There are many wonderful ways to support WEDU PBS during this season of giving. You can help support the programming you love by considering creative non-cash gifts such as: IRA Charitable Rollover individuals who have reached age 70½ can donate up to $100,000 to WEDU directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), without treating the distribution as taxable income. Giving from your IRA is a great way to satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) tax-free and support WEDU’s mission to serve the public good and to aid in the creation of an informed citizenry. To satisfy your RMD on your 401(k), talk to your financial or tax advisor about rolling 401(k) monies into an IRA to make a taxfree charitable contribution to WEDU. Gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds Donating stock or mutual funds you have held longer than one year and have appreciated in value directly to WEDU is a savvy giving strategy to avoid capital gains taxes. Consult with your financial advisor to help leverage your gift for the best tax savings. Remember, sometimes it might be more tax advantageous to sell depreciated stock and give a gift of cash to WEDU with the proceeds—a double tax savings! Real estate donation: a new way to give WEDU now accepts gifts of real estate. Donate your land, home, or commercial property in anywhere in the world to support WEDU’s work to educate, explore, and engage our community. Visit wedu.org/property to learn more.
