A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

Holiday traditions are a meaningful way for families to celebrate the season. For my family, food memories play a significant role. While growing up, holidays provided an exciting opportunity to visit our family on the farm in Wisconsin. We enjoyed ham, homemade biscuits, and corn on the cob. My sweetest memories of unforgettable desserts include Norwegian Christmas treats

passed down for generations to my grandmother and mom.

My 83-year-old mom is still a fantastic baker. This year, keeping with tradition, Mom, who is now “Gram” to my four sons, will share some of these same treats with us. Her recipes for Egg Pancakes, Sandbakkels, and Krumkake will continue to be part of our holiday celebration. See my family’s version of these traditional Norwegian recipes at wedu.org/blogs

PBS provides food inspiration year round that comes from a long line of incredible chefs, including the first lady of cooking, Julia Child, to the bakers featured in the Great British Baking Show to the most-watched cooking show on PBS, America’s Test Kitchen. And if you haven’t discovered it yet, How She Rolls is a culinary docuseries following the life of Carrie Morey, who launched a restaurant inspired by her mother’s family biscuit recipe. The episode “A Very Carrie Christmas” is now streaming on WEDU PBS Passport. Check out the best videos, recipes, and articles from public television at pbs.org/food/shows.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, I invite you to celebrate your holidays with WEDU. We have everything you need to get into the holiday spirit with special programming, delicious recipe ideas, and fun activities for kids and to entertain guests.

As always, I invite your comments and feedback. Please share your favorite holiday food memories with me at paulgrove@wedu.org.

Happy Holidays!

LEFT: My Mom, Kären, whipping up a batch of one of her beloved recipes.

RIGHT: My son, Cooper, enjoying Gram’s egg pancakes.

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: December 2022

Iris Valle

What she does at WEDU: I am part of the Membership department; my title is Development Coordinator. I provide customer service to our donors, process all incoming money that comes in through our online services, send thank you letters to our donors weekly and monthly, oversee our Kids Club Membership program, and am a part of PLEDGE, which is our fundraising campaign.

Time dedicated: I have worked at WEDU for 27 ½ years.

Hobbies & passions: I like to read. My passion is my family, especially my grandkids. Favorite PBS program: I love Rick Steves and the Create channel.

I love WEDU and working here. I read a quote from Ranbir Kapoor a while back, and I think that it’s true of WEDU: “I believe that working with good people matters because then the work environment is good. If there is a sense of respect and belief among the people you work with, that is when good work is done.”

MANY WAYS TO GIVE

Creative End of Year

Giving to WEDU PBS

There are many wonderful ways to support WEDU PBS during this season of giving. You can help support the programming you love by considering creative non-cash gifts such as:

IRA Charitable Rollover

Individuals who have reached age 70½ can donate up to $100,000 to WEDU directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), without treating the distribution as taxable income. Giving from your IRA is a great way to satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) tax-free and support WEDU’s mission to serve the public good and to aid in the creation of an informed citizenry. To satisfy your RMD on your 401(k), talk to your financial or tax advisor about rolling 401(k) monies into an IRA to make a tax-free charitable contribution to WEDU.

Gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds

Donating stock or mutual funds which you have held longer than one year and have appreciated in value directly to WEDU is a savvy giving strategy to avoid capital gains taxes. Consult with your financial advisor to help leverage your gift for the best tax savings. Remember, sometimes it might be more tax advantageous to sell depreciated stock and give a gift of cash to WEDU with the proceeds— a double tax savings!

Donate your car, motorcycle, boat, RV or even a kayak!

We make donating your vehicle as simple and convenient as possible with fast pick-up and streamlined paperwork. You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.

For more information on creative giving to WEDU, call (813) 739-2959, email giving@wedu.org, or visit wedugiving.org.

National Teachers Academy (NTA) is a topranked, high-performing elementary school in a growing south side Chicago neighborhood. As the neighborhood gentrifies, a wealthy parents’ group seeks to close NTA and replace it with a high school campus. This program airs at 10:30 p.m. Monday, December 12 on WEDU and repeats at 11 p.m. Sunday, December 18 on WEDQ

Neurotypical

Get an unprecedented exploration of autism from the point of view of autistic people themselves. Four-year-old Violet, teenaged Nicholas and adult Paula occupy different

positions on the autism spectrum, but they are all at pivotal moments in their lives. How they and the people around them work out their perceptual and behavioral differences becomes a remarkable reflection of the “neurotypical” world—the world of the nonautistic—revealing inventive adaptations on each side and an emerging critique of both what it means to be normal and what it means to be human. This program airs at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, December 17 on WEDQ

IN A DIFFERENT KEY

A mother tracks down the first person diagnosed with autism to learn if his life holds promise for her own autistic son. She documents both cruelty and kindness, but also hope that more of us are learning to have the backs of those who are different. This episode airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 13 on WEDU and repeats at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 17 on WEDQ

ADVENTURES OF T-MAN

A jobs program for people on the autism spectrum gives Terrence (AKA “T-Man”) the footing to consider living independently for the first time. Yet he struggles to convince his family that he’s ready to go on his own. Backed into a corner, he takes his future into his own hands as he tries to find his place in the world, risking his relationships and personal safety. This program airs at 11 p.m. Tuesday, December 13 on WEDU and repeats at 2 a.m. Sunday, December 18 on WEDQ.

THE JUBILEE PUDDING: 70 YEARS IN THE BAKING

In the year Queen Elizabeth marked her 70th on the throne, Fortnum & Mason challenged home bakers to create a tart, cake, or pudding to honor her legacy. Seven judges headed by Dame Mary Berry invite the final five bakers to London where they bake their desserts—hoping it will be the winning recipe. This program airs at 10 p.m. Monday, December 19 on WEDU and repeats at 10 p.m. Friday, December 23 on WEDQ

BETTY WHITE: FIRST LADY OF TELEVISION

America lost one of its most beloved stars on December 31, 2021. This documentary, originally broadcast in 2018, celebrates

Betty White’s life and career and features a treasure trove of video clips of her iconic characters from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland.” It also includes interviews with Ryan Reynolds, Valerie Bertinelli, Tina Fey, Georgia Engel, Gavin MacLeod, Carl Reiner and more. This program airs at 9 p.m. Monday, December 26 on WEDQ

LIDIA CELEBRATES AMERICA: OVERCOMING THE ODDS

In this hour-long Lidia Celebrates America special, Lidia travels from big cities to small pockets of rural America, both in person and virtually, to share the inspiring stories of a diverse group of resilient Americans who have overcome extraordinary odds in their own lives, found purpose in serving their communities, and turned their loss into inspiring accomplishments. This program airs at 10 p.m. Monday, December 26 on WEDQ.

FRANK FERRANTE’S GROUCHO

Written and performed by actor Frank Ferrante, this filmed play with music celebrates the style and spirit of comedian Groucho Marx (1890-1977), whose irreverent humor continues to influence artists today. This program airs at 3 p.m. Wednesday, December 28 on WEDU and repeats at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, December 31 on WEDQ

INSIDE HIGH NOON

Explore the remarkable 1952 film starring Gary Cooper, and the gripping story behind its troubled production. Though High Noon was originally seen as an attack on the blacklisting witch hunt gripping Hollywood at the time, it is now recognized as a damning portrait of civic complacency, democracy in peril. High Noon is today considered a classic of American cinema. This program airs at 11 p.m. Friday, December 30 on WEDU

WEDU programming is made possible with the support of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners.
