A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

It’s our birthday! WEDU PBS turned on its broadcast signal 65 years ago on October 27, 1958. We were one of the first public media stations in Florida and a leader in providing television as a new educational tool for local schools. Since then, I estimate we’ve broadcast 1,066,530 hours of some of the world’s most meaningful television.

I understand if you have not seen all 1,066,530 hours (I haven’t either!), but I’m grateful you have been there watching and supporting us to make a positive difference.

Maybe you remember 1958. It was a time before color televisions were in most homes. Roller skating rinks and hula hoops were at the height of their popularity. Gas was 28¢ a gallon, and the average cost of a new house was $12,750. It was before the Beatles, and Elvis’s singing career was on hold while serving in the US Army. My 84-yearold mom, Kären, had just graduated high school and fondly recalls the Everly Brothers and their hits “Bye Bye Love” and “Wake Up Little Susie” at her senior sock hop!

WEDU has changed dramatically over its 65-year history, like the rest of the country and the world. The station grew from having only 12-hour broadcasts daily to providing programming 24 hours, seven days a week. Television screens have changed from fuzzy and black and white to crisp with high-definition color. One signal available with rabbit ears has morphed into six digital channels and a streaming service!

Reflecting on our achievements over the years, I sincerely thank you for making this work possible with your generous contributions. We could not do any of it without you! Your support strengthens WEDU and allows us to continue to grow and share the stories of our community.

The best is yet to come, and with your continued involvement and support, WEDU will be here, more vital than ever, for future generations to enjoy in new and creative ways.

Thank you for making 65 years possible!

As always, I invite your comments and feedback. If you want to share some of your favorite memories from 1958 or favorite programs from WEDU PBS throughout the years, email me today at paulgrove@wedu.org.

Onward and upward!

MANY WAYS TO GIVE

National Estate Planning Awareness Week: October 17-23, 2023

More than half of Americans, an estimated 56%, do not have an estate plan in place, making estate planning a critically overlooked component of financial wellness. This creates hardship, financial or otherwise, that can be diminished by advanced planning.

WEDU PBS has been a strong supporter of the importance of National Estate Planning Awareness Week for the past several years, following its adoption on September 27, 2008. Its adoption was intended to help consumers understand estate planning and its critical need.

Estate planning encompasses the growth, conservation, and transfer of an individual’s wealth through the creation of an “estate plan.” Estate planning develops a strategy that will maintain the financial security of individuals through their lifetime and ensure the intended transfer of their property and assets at death, while considering the unique circumstances of an individual’s family.

It’s a great time to remember WEDU in your will.

For more information concerning estate planning, visit wedu.org/support/giving Always consult with your attorney or planning professional about creating your personal estate plan.

To get your copy of our FREE estate planning booklet, visit wedugiving.org or you can contact our WEDU PBS Development office at (813) 739-2959
