AUGUST 2022
A Message from Paul Grove Dear Friends of WEDU PBS, The Ybor City-born artist Ferdie Pacheco said, “In essence, the whole thing of life is to just keep trying to do good things. Just do good things for people.” Pacheco was talking about people like all of you! You’ve done a great thing by supporting WEDU PBS and I’m so pleased to announce that, because of you, WEDU can continue telling stories in and about our community through original, local programs. In addition, I am proud to announce that the Emmy® Award-winning hyperlocal docuseries Greater will expand this month with the introduction of Greater Ybor City. This new series will premiere online at wedu.org/greater and on-air on August 11 at 9 p.m. All five episodes will explore captivating stories from the streets of this unique historic district. Ybor City is special to me, not just because it’s the home of the Cuban sandwich or my wife Michelle’s favorite café con leche, but I am also fond of the city’s rich history, especially the blend of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian cultures. My favorite painting, by the aforementioned Cuban artist Ferdie Pacheco, hangs in a special place in my home. Pacheco was a successful pharmacist and doctor, who worked as a boxing cornerman for twelve world champions, including Muhammad Ali. As an artist, he was known for his imaginative use of color and design. My Pacheco painting is a daily reminder of the incredible story of one of the inspirational people who helped make Ybor the diverse cultural destination it is today. Each month, WEDU will premiere a new Greater Ybor City story online at wedu.org/greater. If you are curious about Ybor City’s history, including the unique qualities of the Ybor Cuban sandwich, the cigar factories, or even Ybor’s free-roaming chickens, I encourage you to watch for new episodes. As always, I invite your comments and feedback. If you would like to share stories about your experiences in Ybor City or have suggestions for other exciting places for our next Greater series to explore in the future, please contact me at: paulgrove@wedu.org. Who provides a window into your local community? WE DO - WEDU, your PBS station! Onward and upward,

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: August 2022
James Borchuck What he does at WEDU: My official title is Producer, and I do a little bit of everything. I am on a team with two other producers, and we work on local shows like Arts Plus, Florida This Week, Greater Sarasota, Public Square, and Can We Talk? Producers wear many hats. We generate ideas, make phone calls, shoot interviews and B-roll, edit footage and sometimes write scripts.
Time dedicated: 1 year Hobbies & passions: Outside of work, my hobbies include fixing things around the house, paddle boarding, and finding new cocktail recipes to try.
MANY WAYS TO GIVE Become a WEDU Visionary When you remember WEDU PBS in your will or estate plan, you join an outstanding group of supporters known as WEDU Visionaries. Visionaries have the foresight to help WEDU fulfill its mission to provide quality programming, lifelong learning, and educational resources for future generations.
Favorite PBS program: My favorite PBS shows are PBS NewsHour and FRONTLINE. I also enjoy the Ken Burns documentaries when they come out.
Favorite project you’ve been a part of at a WEDU: In the year that I have been at WEDU, I’m proud to have been part of Greater Sarasota Season 2 as a camera operator and grip. We really elevated the production value and told some great stories during those five episodes.
“
For 19 years, Americans have named PBS the “most trusted media organization” in a nationwide survey. Knowing that viewers believe and trust us to tell their stories is why I love walking in the door every day.
Henry and Margaret Finlay were Visionaries who left a gift to WEDU in their estate plan. Henry Finlay was an Investment Manager for the firm Ingalls & Snyder. Margaret Finlay was a travel consultant for American Airlines. They married later in life and enjoyed summers in Bar Harbor, Maine, and winters in Bradenton.
NOW AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST
They loved educational, travel, and cultural programming on WEDU. Margaret’s absolute “must-see” program, every Saturday night, was The Lawrence Welk Show. Her friend and trustee, Reba Rogers, shared that once while traveling on a cruise to Cuba, Margaret was upset she had to miss her favorite program.
Join moderator Rob Lorei as he leads a diverse roundtable of journalists, academics, officials and political insiders for a lively discussion about issues important to Floridians.
We are grateful for Henry and Margaret’s generosity, foresight, and lasting legacy. By including WEDU in their estate plan, Visionaries Henry and Margaret ensure all of us can continue to enjoy WEDU programs as they did.

MANY WAYS to GIVE Donate your car, motorcycle, boat, RV or even a kayak! We make donating your vehicle as simple and convenient as possible with fast pick-up and streamlined paperwork. You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.
For more information on creative giving to WEDU, call (813) 739-2959 or email giving@wedu.org.
