A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

Whenever I am out and about in the community, I always say, "I have the greatest job in the world. It is a privilege to be the CEO of WEDU PBS!"

My background is primarily in producing, writing, shooting, and editing, and one of the best parts of my work at WEDU is bringing great stories and storytellers to you—the citizens of West Central Florida.

This summer, I am excited about a new documentary series exploring Southern identity through the eyes of contemporary characters. Southern Storytellers premieres on WEDU, July 18, at 9 p.m. This three-part series reveals the vast landscape of stories that celebrate the resilience and joy of the American South. This series follows some of the region's most inspiring men and women in the places they call home, from the mountains of Appalachia to the Gulf of Mexico. The American South's rich history and culture are explored through the lens of music, literature, television, and film that show the South in an authentic light.

Expect a revelation of the vivid patchwork of American stories and the magnitude of gifts from some of the most recognized storytellers, including Billy Bob Thornton, Jesmyn Ward, Jason Isbell, Jericho Brown, Amanda Shires, Lyle Lovett, Angie Thomas, Qui Nguyen, and Mary Steenburgen.

In addition to the three-part broadcast series, Southern Storytellers includes a six-part companion series from PBS Digital Studios titled Southern Sounds. The digital series explores the intersection of music and story with a distinctly Southern perspective. It offers a front-row seat and backstage pass to the storytelling process. In each episode, host Thao Nguyen invites audiences to see a new Southern artist at work—each a unique voice reflecting the character and culture of their home community—and to explore that artist's relationship to their hometown through the lyrics of their songs. The digital series will launch on the PBS YouTube channel on July 11.

Southern Storytellers is an inspiring example of how public service media allows local storytellers to share their history. At WEDU, we are proud of the success of our Emmy Award-winning local programming that brings untold stories from local voices to our community. This summer, I encourage you to check out this new series and the local programs we produce at WEDU.

As always, I invite your comments and feedback. If you would like to share some of your summer stories or story ideas for WEDU to explore, don't hesitate to contact me at paulgrove@wedu.org.

Onward and upward!

Donating stock or mutual funds you have held longer than one year and have appreciated in value directly to WEDU is a savvy giving strategy to avoid capital gains taxes. Consult with your financial advisor to help leverage your gift for the best tax savings. Remember, sometimes it might be more tax advantageous to sell depreciated stock and give a gift of cash to WEDU with the proceeds—a double tax savings!

Donate your car, motorcycle, boat, RV, kayak, or even real estate property! We make donating your vehicle or other mode of transportation as simple and convenient as possible with fast pick-up and streamlined paperwork. You benefit by possibly being able to reduce your taxable income. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling them. Avoid paying for advertising, loss of privacy and possible security risk. In addition, there is no need to pay for registrations, insurance, and repairs to keep your transportation in running condition while you wait for a buyer. You can also contact us for easy gifting of real estate that may have become a burden to own or insure.
