A Message from Community Advisor Board Chair, Patty Suárez Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
Board of Directors
Because you are a WEDU PBS member, I assume you are also an ardent fan of the station, just like me! I’ve been an enthusiast for a long time; since my kids were young and I discovered I could trust WEDU to provide outstanding, commercialfree programs like Sesame Street and Arthur. My relationship with WEDU became even more personal in 1997 when I accepted the position of Education Director. I loved my job, and my kids enjoyed volunteering at station events, appearing in on-air spots, and “helping out” in the editing suite. WEDU turned out to be a great training ground for my son, Greg, who became a producer. In fact, he recently booked one of WEDU’s studios to shoot a national commercial. I have continued volunteering at WEDU over the years, and today I am proud to serve as the Chair of WEDU’s Community Advisory Board. I am sure you have your reasons why you are a WEDU fan. Maybe you love All Creatures Great & Small, Finding Your Roots, or Antiques Roadshow. Maybe your kids or grandkids enjoy some of the same programs you watched growing up. Perhaps you’ve attended a WEDU event, film screening, or community conversation. Maybe you are an educator who utilizes the vast array of online educational materials WEDU offers. As a viewer, I am sure you count on WEDU’s diverse programming to keep you entertained and well informed about current events. Now may be the right time for you to consider getting more involved with WEDU by becoming a Community Advisory Board (CAB) member. CAB members advise and assist the organization’s goal of educating, exploring, and engaging by building and fostering relationships between community members and the organization. CAB members serve as the eyes, ears, and voice of WEDU’s audiences. They represent their communities and provide feedback to WEDU on programs and services at quarterly meetings. CAB members also support WEDU at local events and station activities and serve as ambassadors in the community.

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: July 2022
Devin Dominguez What she does at WEDU: I am one of four Philanthropy Officers at WEDU PBS. I am lucky to work with the kind and generous individuals that invest in our mission through leadership giving, or remember WEDU in their estate plans. In this role, I am also able to do one of my favorite things—creative writing. I write proposals for government and foundation grants to support upcoming projects, and I wrote the most recent WEDU impact report. In addition to my work in philanthropy, I use my background in museums and public art to lead our creative placemaking efforts as part of our strategic plan. I am also the unofficial president of the unofficial WEDU Fit Club.
Time dedicated: Six years Hobbies & passions: Most people who know me know that I will always talk about one of these three topics: houseplants, cats, and Orangetheory workouts. I share my plant-filled home with three cats (Coco, Rex, and Adeline) and honor my body with a workout and meditation every morning.
Favorite PBS program: When I was studying at UCF, I would religiously watch Cold Feet on WMFE PBS. It is still one of my favorite shows on public television.
“
One of the special parts of my job is to learn why WEDU is important to members of our community, and to marry their passion with support of our work. I have been very fortunate to have facilitated some special gifts, including reconnecting with my high school history teacher who became a WEDU Visionary by including WEDU in his will; a gift from a donor (who has become a dear friend) to honor her husband’s commitment to education; and multi-year gifts from avid travelers who love Rick Steves and invest in our work to provide a window to the world for our community.
Did you know donors who give $60 or more a year get FREE access to WEDU PBS Passport? Visit wedu.org/passport to learn more and activate your account.
MANY WAYS TO GIVE
Creative Giving to WEDU PBS There are many wonderful ways to support WEDU PBS this year. You can help support the programming you love by considering creative non-cash gifts such as: IRA Charitable Rollover Individuals who have reached age 70½ can donate up to $100,000 to WEDU directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA), without treating the distribution as taxable income. Giving from your IRA is a great way to satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) tax-free and support WEDU’s mission to serve the public good and to aid in the creation of an informed citizenry. To satisfy your RMD on your 401(k), talk to your financial or tax advisor about rolling 401(k) monies into an IRA to make a tax-free charitable contribution to WEDU. Gifts of stocks, bonds and mutual funds Donating stock or mutual funds that you have held longer than one year and have appreciated in value directly to WEDU is a savvy giving strategy to avoid capital gains taxes. Consult with your financial advisor to help leverage your gift for the best tax savings. Remember, sometimes it might be more tax advantageous to sell depreciated stock and give a gift of cash to WEDU with the proceeds – a double tax savings! Donate your car, motorcycle, boat, RV or even a kayak! We make donating your vehicle as simple and convenient as possible with fast pick-up and streamlined paperwork. You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus, you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer.
For more information on creative giving to WEDU, call (813) 739-2959 or email giving@wedu.org. To get your copy of our FREE estate planning booklet, go to wedu.org/support/giving to request it or you can contact our WEDU PBS Development office at (813) 739-2959.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Chasing the Moon
Earthrise (Part 2 of 3) This episode, set in 1964-1968, covers four heady, dangerous years in the history of the space race. As Americans moved through the sixties and reflected on the challenges ahead, many wondered: What exactly would it take to beat the Soviets to the moon? This episode airs at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 2 on WEDQ. 12
JULY 2022
Magnificent Desolation (Part 3 of 3) Part 3, which covers 1969-1970, takes Americans to the moon and back. Dreams of space dramatically intersect with dreams of democracy on American soil, raising questions of national priorities and national identity. The final episode also considers what happens to scientific and engineering programs—and to a country—after ambitious national goals have been achieved. This episode airs at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 2 on WEDQ.
PLANET CALIFORNIA
Close Encounters (Part 2 of 2) Hollywood may captivate, but in one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, the real stars of California—a wild and truly spectacular cast of creatures in the sea and on land, from blue whales to burrowing owls—are ready for their closeup. This episode airs at 9 p.m. Sunday, July 3 on WEDQ.

NOVA | THE PLANETS
Inner Worlds (Part 1 of 5) The rocky planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars—were born of similar material around the same time. Yet only one of them supports life. Were Earth’s neighbors always so extreme? And is there somewhere else in the solar system life might flourish? This episode airs at 9 p.m. Sunday, July 10 on WEDQ. Mars (Part 2 of 5) Mars was once a blue water-world studded with active volcanoes. But when its magnetic field and protective atmosphere faded, it became the frozen desert planet we know today. With so many necessary elements in place, did life ever form on Mars? This episode airs at 9 p.m. Sunday, July 17 on WEDQ. Jupiter (Part 3 of 5) Jupiter’s massive gravitational force made it a wrecking ball when it barreled through the early solar system. But it also shaped life on Earth, delivering comets laden with water—and perhaps even the fateful asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. This episode airs at 9 p.m. Sunday, July 24 on WEDQ. Saturn (Part 4 of 5) NASA’s Cassini explores Saturn for 13 years, looping through its icy rings and flying by its moons.
