A Message from Paul Grove
Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood on April 22 when we invited the community to celebrate kindness at the WEDU Studios. With support from Fred Rogers Productions and PNC Grow Up Great®, WEDU hosted our Be My Neighbor Day Block Party. This event, themed around the PBS KIDS program Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, was free, open to the public, and fun for all ages. Daniel
Tiger's Neighborhood is an animated program created for preschoolers. This series, for a new generation of children, tells engaging stories about the life of Daniel. Daniel and his friends learn essential social skills for school and life through imagination, creativity, and music.
The Daniel Tiger character is based on the puppet in the original Mister Rogers' Neighborhood TV program. At the program's launch, Dorothy Daniel, the station manager at WQED, presented Fred Rogers with a tiger puppet as a gift. He decided to use the tiger puppet and named it Daniel, after the person who gave him the gift.
Even though my four sons are long past preschool age, I am familiar with Daniel Tiger and know it is the #1 PBS KIDS series and is available in more than 75 countries. However, I did not realize Daniel is a SUPERSTAR to preschoolers. As hundreds of families lined up to meet the Daniel Tiger character at the event, I could not help but compare him to one of music's biggest superstars, who recently toured in Tampa, Taylor Swift.
It was an exciting day for children who, besides meeting Daniel Tiger and his friend Katerina Kittycat, could watch live performers, sing, read, dance, and participate in educational arts and crafts. Attendees met firefighters, paramedics, police officers, and other "Community Helpers" in a friendly, non-emergency setting. It was an exciting day for parents who watched the magic of their children engaging and learning things that will prepare them for success in the future.
Building on the values and themes of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, WEDU collaborated with new and existing community partners to promote local volunteerism, family engagement, and community development.
I am thrilled the entire WEDU organization participated and invited our neighbors to tour the station and learn more about the work we do here. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, one we hope to repeat annually for years to come.
Onward and upward!

MANY WAYS TO GIVE
Broadcasters Circle
Members of the WEDU Broadcasters Circle are dedicated viewers like you who believe in the value of public broadcasting and support WEDU with annual gifts of $1,000 or more. These philanthropic donors support WEDU programming and help fund exceptional educational programming for children and adults.
Beth Ann Segal has been a PBS supporter throughout her adult life. When Minneapolis was her home, she and her husband Saul supported Twin Cities PBS. When they moved to New York, it was WNET, and finally, when they made Florida their seasonal home, it was natural to loyally support WEDU for 26 years!
As Beth Ann returns to New York more permanently, she fondly says WEDU is the most memorable of the PBS stations she has supported. She has enjoyed special events and performances because of her Broadcasters Circle Platinum membership. She says she will miss the many opportunities to see the performing arts in the Sarasota area but plans to return for a visit next winter.
Thank you, Beth Ann, for your fantastic support of WEDU and our community.
