A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! WEDU PBS invites you to our television studios for Be My Neighbor Day!

This exciting event, on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., promises a day filled with exciting activities. You'll

have the chance to enjoy behind-the-scenes studio tours and meet one of the most beloved PBS KIDS characters, Daniel Tiger.

Growing up, I was influenced by the groundbreaking PBS series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Fred Rogers dedicated his life to understanding childhood and brought that insight to television with his program which began in 1968. For over 30 years, Mister Rogers cultivated a unique bond with millions of children, each feeling like they were visiting a trusted friend. I was honored to meet Fred at a Public Broadcasting conference in 1999 where he received the PBS Lifetime Achievement Award.

With his puppets, including the iconic Daniel Tiger, and his neighbors like the Speedy Delivery letter carrier, Mr. McFeely, Mister Rogers spoke directly to the camera, fostering moments of pure magic

for children everywhere. His kindness, acceptance, and empathy left an indelible mark on countless lives. My son Riley experienced his magical moment when meeting Mr. McFeely and the Daniel Tiger puppet in 2007. (See picture to the left).

Throughout his illustrious career, Fred Rogers championed the cause of children

and the importance of access to public television. Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood was created following his passing to honor his legacy. Now, preschool children have an animated program featuring Daniel Tiger, who shares relatable discoveries and challenges with his friends, neighbors, and family in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

I warmly invite you to join me, Daniel Tiger, and countless neighbors as we celebrate the value of kindness at WEDU PBS' Be My Neighbor Day. This free, family-friendly event welcomes kids of all ages, promising plenty of magical moments.

Onward and upward!

WEDU PBS Staff Spotlight: March 2024

Latoya Desamour

What she does at WEDU: I am the Education Program Manager at WEDU PBS. I help manage planning, development, evaluation, promotion and effective outreach programs for the WEDU PBS Education Department.

Time dedicated: I started at WEDU in October 2022.

Hobbies & passions: When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling with loved ones. I love exploring new and exciting places around the world. When I’m not traveling, I am home cooking up a new recipe or making memories with my husband and our four children. Whether home or traveling, you will find me with a book. Having access to books is very important to me; I love reading. Favorite PBS program: My favorite PBS show is Finding Your Roots. I love to see how people connect to their past.

“Working at WEDU and being a part of the Education team is such an amazing opportunity. Everyone I work with is so incredibly genuine, passionate, and supportive. The work/life balance isn’t just something on paper; it’s evident in the ways WEDU supports its staff. I’m very grateful for each day that I’m able to expand the footprint of WEDU and make a meaningful impact on those in our service area.

MANY WAYS TO GIVE

Support WEDU PBS Through a Donor Advised Fund

Donor advised funds (or DAFs) can be thought of as a savings account for philanthropic giving. Many people opt to use donor advised funds as a financial planning tool at the guidance of their financial advisors because it gives you the ability to make a taxdeductible gift into your donor advised fund in the current year, which you can save over many years to then make one transformational gift to a non-profit in the near future.

Just like regular savings accounts are helpful when you are saving up for a special treat, donor advised funds are a wonderful way to make a special impact on WEDU’s mission to educate, explore, and engage to inspire a lifetime of learning and discovery.

Donor advised funds are hosted through many providers:

• Local community foundations, like our friends at the Community Foundation Tampa Bay, Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Pinellas Community Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation, or Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

• Other nonprofit partners, like the Tampa Orlando Pinellas (TOP) Jewish Foundation or the National Christian Foundation.

• A financial institution, like Raymond James Charitable, Fidelity Charitable, or Schwab Charitable.

Giving to WEDU PBS from your donor advised fund is easy; simply request that your plan administrator make a distribution to WEDU PBS.

Often donor advised fund administrators will ask for:

• WEDU’s tax ID, #59-0840626,

• And our address: 1300 N Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33607.

For more information visit wedugiving.org and look for Donor Advised Funds under “How to Give”. For further assistance, call 813-739-2959 or email giving@wedu.org.
