A Message from Paul Grove

Dear Friends of WEDU PBS,

Thirty years ago as a young commercial TV producer, I found myself in the middle of one of Tampa Bay’s most frustrating and intriguing stories. The tale of failure and redemption that eventually led to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays joining the major leagues had many twists and compelling characters, yet, there has never been a comprehensive documentary about it. Until now.

The saga of how the Tampa Bay Rays came to be our local major league team is a roller coaster ride involving baseball, ambition, politics, money, skullduggery, persistence, and a moment when time actually stood still.

I had a front-row seat to Tampa Bay’s journey to become a baseball town, and I am thrilled that WEDU PBS can share that drama with you.

Rise of the Rays: A Devil of a Story will premiere on March 30 at 9 p.m. Watch online at wedu.org/rays.

You do not have to be a baseball fan to appreciate this story. Rise of the Rays is an entertaining and compelling yarn for anyone willing to root for our hometown. Over the course of an incredible hour, the film reveals how business leaders, politicians, and the media navigated a remarkable seven failed attempts before finally landing Tampa Bay in the major leagues. You will hear from the people who were there, including Tony LaRussa, Frank Morsani, Jack Critchfield, Marc Topkin, Joe Henderson, Dave Wirth, and more.

WEDU is uniquely qualified in its mission to produce local, original, long-form documentaries. While leaders in the area currently work out the details of what it will take to keep the Rays in Tampa Bay, it is significant to review this history. Stories like Rise of the Rays provide essential context to understanding those decisions.

After you watch, I invite your comments and feedback. Let me know how you feel about this tumultuous account of the Tampa Bay Rays backstory, including the dastardly clock manipulation in Illinois that kept the White Sox from moving to St. Petersburg.

If you are a Rays fan rooting for your hometown and want to join me for a home game this season, email me at paulgrove@wedu.org We will randomly select a winner from all entries, and I will reach out with details.

Onward and upward!

MANY WAYS TO GIVE

Donor Advised Funds can support the programs you love

Donor advised funds are the philanthropy equivalent of a savings account for giving. Many people have opted to use donor advised funds as a financial planning tool at the guidance of their financial advisors because it gives you the ability to make a taxdeductible gift into your donor advised fund in the current year, which you can save over many years to make one transformational gift to a non-profit in the future year. Just like regular savings accounts are helpful when you are saving up for a special treat, donor advised funds are a wonderful way to make a special impact on our mission to educate, explore, and engage to inspire a lifetime of learning and discovery.

This episode airs at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 29 on WEDU.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Test Tube Babies

She was described in the press as the "Baby of the Century." When Louise Brown, the world's first successful test tube baby, was born in Great Britain on July 25, 1978, the event was heralded as the beginning of a technological revolution in human reproduction. It was also the culmination of a decade-long effort, involving scientists on both sides of the Atlantic, to help a woman conceive through in vitro fertilization, or IVF. This is the story of two doctors—New York gynecologist Landrum Shettles and British physiologist Robert Edwards—whose work became the subject of debate over the limits of science and a precursor of the current debate over cloning and stem cell research. The Movement and the Madman

Explore how two brilliantly orchestrated antiwar protests in the fall of 1969—the largest the country had ever seen— pressured President Nixon to cancel what he called his “madman” plans for a massive escalation of the U.S. war in Vietnam, including a threat to use nuclear weapons. At the time, protestors had no idea how influential they would be and how many lives they may have saved. Told through remarkable archival footage and firsthand accounts from movement leaders, Nixon administration officials, historians and
