FEBRUARY 2024
A Message from Joyce Cotton Dear Friends of WEDU PBS, Following the acclaimed success of The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song, a new series, GOSPEL, from executive producer, host, and scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. exploring Black spirituality through sermons and songs will premiere on WEDU PBS on February 12 and 13 at 9 p.m. Throughout the four-hour docuseries, GOSPEL delves deep into the origin story of Black gospel music, blending sacred spirituals with the blues tradition. Even in the 21st century, gospel continues to evolve, remaining a source of cultural affirmation and sustenance, bringing an enduring tradition into the future. Like many people from my generation, I grew up in the church, and my spiritual journey began at 8 years old. I attended Sunday School, morning worship, and most afternoon and evening celebrations. During the summer, we always attended vacation bible school. Over the years, I sang in the church choir or a singing group that routinely traveled with the Pastor. Our purpose was to provide support and encouragement through song in preparation for the pastor to deliver his sermon. I remember as a child, my first solo was “In the Garden” which I sang one Easter Sunday. Today, I eagerly anticipate attending church on Sundays, and as you may have guessed, I sing in the church choir. I genuinely enjoy the fellowship with other church members who share a joy for singing and serving others. The message from the pulpit to the gospel music sung by the choir brings good news, hope, courage, strength, and wisdom to keep the faith even in troubled times or challenging circumstances. It gives you the feeling that everything is going to be alright. Join WEDU on Thursday, February 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., for an evening filled with uplifting gospel music and history at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church at 1006 W Cypress St, in Tampa. Fred Hearns, Curator of Black History at the Tampa Bay History Center, will moderate an enlightening discussion about the local history of the Black church and gospel music and the church's pivotal role in advancing social justice. This free community event aims to celebrate the history of gospel music and share memories from family members and music experts about Tampa Bay's vibrant gospel community. The event will feature special performances by the Beulah Baptist Church Male Chorus, the Gospel Choir at the University of South Florida, Alex Harris (founder of Arts for Teens Conservatory), and the Walton Academy for the Performing Arts, and more. Additionally, we will present a preview screening of GOSPEL, the upcoming PBS docuseries by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Please register for the event at wedu.org/gospel. I look forward to seeing you there to celebrate the spirit of gospel music! Sincerely,

FIRST RESPONDERS: LAST TO ASK
America is grappling with a mental health crisis, and first responders are disproportionately impacted. Their demanding roles leave them little time to recover from traumatic exposure. They also battle the stigma—and potential consequences—of asking for help. By sharing their experiences, we aim to raise awareness and provide greater insight into this beloved community.
