Holiday shopping for tweens in Oak Park
I
RUBY MEAD
’m what you call a tween. A tween is someone that is 11 or 12. Tweens are the hardest people to get gifts for when it comes to the holidays. We don’t want little kid gifts, but we’re not ready for the teenage gifts.
Luckily, Oak Park has a huge selection of amazing stores with awesome gifts. From arts and crafts and stocking stuffers from Geppettos, wacky items from Pumpkin Moon, to amazing and beautiful clothes from Sugar Cup Trading, Oak Park has a great selection of gifts for us. When I went to Geppetto’s Toy Box I found an awesome selection of gifts and stocking stuffers. I loved all of the jewelry and hair accessories. There were headbands that had cute little statements and/or animals on them and there were ones with just a simple decoration. I also loved the arts and crafts they had. I personally love art and creating
projects. A lot of people I know love art items like rainbow loom bracelets and duck tape. Tweens love DIY projects and creating things that they can use every day. Geppetto’s had a large selection of amazing gifts and stocking stuffers. I also visited Sugar Cup Trading. Their clothes are perfect for the tween style. When I went there I realized that I loved everything and everything was my style. If I was to only chose one thing from there I would go crazy trying to decide because everything there was perfect. I love Sugar Cup’s clothes - they’re absolutely fabulous. Sugar Cup also has great accessories and shoes. They have cute purses and jewelry that go with all of their outfits. The shoes they have are super stylish and sparkly, the perfect combination. They also have cute, simple shoes that I still think are so stylish. All of Sugar Cup’s products are perfect for the tween style. The last store that we went to was Pumpkin Moon. I love this store, it has such cool and unusual fun things. Pumpkin Moon also had a lot of DIY arts and crafts that are interesting and fun. They also have a lot of stocking stuffer items such as candy and a bunch of trick items. I also love their earmuffs and
photo: Sarah Corbin
hats. All of their hats have cool aliens or funny characters on them. All of their earmuffs have a cool design or an animal on them. They also have Japanese erasers. I love collecting those little cute erasers. Since they are cute animals or food you never end up using them as an eraser. Pumpkin Moon is the perfect place to find a wacky and fun item. I love receiving gifts for Christmas but Christmas is really about giving to others and not thinking about yourself. Not all families are as lucky as mine, and some families can’t afford to give or receive gifts for Christmas. That’s why at my school we’re doing a program where each class is assigned a family and we donate money to the program. Once we collect the amount of money we need we go out and buy gifts for the family. We were given a list of a thing that each person in the family wants for Christmas and that’s how we know what the people in the family want for Christmas. I am really excited for this program and I can’t wait to help these families in need. I love the holiday season because I get to spend time with my family, and I am so lucky that I live in Oak Park where there are such great local shops that are great for gift giving. Ruby Mead is 11 years old. She’s currently a 6th grader at Julian Middle School.
