Current Board member Bruce and his wife Kim have been part of the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation’s family for several years. The Wojacks recently opened a donor advised fund at the Foundation to make their charitable giving easier and to take full advantage of the philanthropic services the Foundation provides.

“The Foundation has been making a positive difference in our community for 60 years. Opening a donor advised fund at the Foundation was easy. It reduced the administrative work of our charitable giving and we love that the balance held in our fund is invested and grows, tax free, for future years of giving,” said Bruce. The couple has focused their giving from the fund on Sarah’s Inn, where Kim serves as Secretary of the Board. Carol Gall, Sarah’s Inn Executive Director, said, “The organization is grateful to the Wojacks and the Community Foundation for supporting the work and mission of Sarah’s Inn - serving victims of domestic violence and their families.”

Animal Care League Animal Care League offers a safe haven for pets in need. Founded in 1973, Animal Care League takes a proactive approach to animal care and adoption as well as preventative measures to help reduce the number of homeless animals in our communities. With over 1000 pets coming to our doors each year, Animal Care League counts on supporters to ensure that we can provide what is needed from routine vaccinations to life saving surgery. UCP Seguin Paralympics Athlete Heads To Argentina Represents “Life Without Limits For People With Disabilities”

atalie Chastain, a resident of Oak Park and participant of UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago, knows what it’s like to overcome seemingly impossible challenges to achieve her life’s goals… to become a productive, valued member of her community. While she has cerebral palsy, Natalie deftly operates her motorized wheelchair to navigate the community, and skillfully uses her computer and communication device to engage the world. Natalie has a particular passion for the time-honored sport of “boccia”, or bocce as it is commonly called in this country. This passion has translated into performance excellence. Due to her many successes Natalie has been selected to represent Team USA at the 2018 Buenos Aires Paralympics Boccia Open in Argentina this November. As part of UCP Seguin’s Boccia Team, Natalie has participated in Paralympics tournaments locally, regionally, and nationally. She competed most recently in the last two USA Boccia Nationals where she gained recognition from her peers and fellow opponents. She is definitely not intimidated by competing against nationally and internationally ranked athletes. Because of her accomplishments on the boccia court, Natalie

has earned a distinctive nickname: “The Beast”. Accompanying Natalie to Argentina is Blanca Munoz, UCP Seguin’s Social-Recreation program coordinator and Boccia Team coach. Together Natalie and Blanca look forward to bringing back stories of Paralympics achievements and further confirmation of UCP Seguin’s mission: “life without limits for people with disabilities”. Ellie Bourgikos

rom the time Ellie Bourgikos was six years old, she fantasized about seeing her writing in print. At the age of eighteen, after entering the Ernest Hemingway Student Scholarship essay competition, Ellie’s words were published in the pages of Hemingway Shorts, the annual literary journal publication of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park. “Looking at my essay printed and bound was like a dream come true,” says Ellie. It was her English teacher at Oak Park-River Forest High School who encouraged Ellie to enter her writing in the Hemingway Student Scholarship essay contest conducted by the EHFOP. “It was an amazing opportunity,” Ellie says, “and a way to look both inward and outward at the world.” Winning the scholarship, she says, was the catalyst that opened many doors, including the chance to be a Baker-Nord Scholar in the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University where Ellie is currently a freshman and considering a double major in English. “I was so grateful,” she says. For Ellie, the EHFOP scholarship presented her with incredible new avenues and because of that she strongly

believes in supporting its mission. The scholarship provides encouragement for students like Ellie to pursue a passion in the humanities and helps make college more accessible “I don’t think I would be doing what I am doing without the Hemingway scholarship,” she says.” It was the little push I needed.” Ellie says entering the essay contest and eventually winning the scholarship gave her the opportunity to consider her place in the Oak Park community in the context of a great writer, Ernest Hemingway, an Old Park native and graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School. Something she says she would not have had the opportunity to do in the classroom alone. “The contest and the chance to win is a great experience for all students,” Ellie says. PING! opens the door to music for students in need

hen she was in fourth grade, Isabela wanted to play violin because “it sounded so beautiful.” PING! provided her with an instrument, at no cost to the family. “Music gave Isabela a fun space in school,” Isabela’s mother, Maria, says, “it helped build her confidence.” In middle school PING! matched Isabela with a high school mentor. “I loved her so much,” Isabela says, “I saw how hard she was working and how passionate she was, and I wanted to be like that too.” Now in high school, Isabela is diligent with her school work and is motivated to improve her playing. Her mother

credits Isabela’s personal and academic growth to her involvement in music. “Being in orchestra and playing the violin,” she says, “has helped Isabela grow into the beautiful person she is today.” You can help open the door to music for other students like Isabela by supporting PING! Opportunity Knocks Opportunity Knocks is dedicated to providing opportunities and resources for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they may pursue their educational, occupational and social interests. Our approach to programming is person-centered, peer-led and community-based. Due to challenges in relying on the State of Illinois as a funding partner, we rely on our community for that partnership and support. We are nearly entirely privately funded. That fact makes your support that much more important. PING! PING! (Providing Instruments for the Next Generation) is an all-volunteer organization that loans musical instruments to students in need in grades 4-12 in Oak Park-River Forest school districts 90, 97, and 200 so that they can participate in their school band or orchestra. PING! also provides music enrichment for its students through workshops, mentoring, summer music camp scholarships, private lessons, and field trips. Founded in 1998 PING! is celebrating its 20th Anniversary and over the past two decades has served more than 600 students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the music programs at school. PING! depends on the community for donated instruments and financial contributions to maintain its instrument inventory and program funding. Pro Bono Network We believe access to justice should not depend upon your ability to afford an attorney. There are simply not enough legal aid lawyers to help people in dire need of legal aid. Pro Musica Youth Chorus Pro Musica is the ONLY community children’s chorus in the greater Oak Park area for kids in 1st grade through high school. For over 25 years Pro Musica has brought music education, performance opportunities, and youth empowerment programming to over 1,100 children. Evidence shows that kids who sing in chorus get better grades, are happier, and become more community involved adults than their peers. Yet about half of area school children do not have access to chorus. New Moms helps vulnerable young families thrive

hen Cheryl came to New Moms in 1997, she was 17 years old with a one-year-old daughter. With no stability or support at home, Cheryl had been forced, along with her daughter to stay in a shelter. Once in the New Moms housing program, however, Cheryl found the structure, stability and discipline she needed to graduate from high school. After only one year in the program, she was able to find a job as an administrative assistant with Hilton Hotels, and move out with her daughter to live on their own. With little experience, but a willingness and determination to learn, Cheryl began a lengthy career journey through hospitality, graphic design, IT management, and accounting. She has since received her Associates degree and numerous certificates from Kaplan University.

In 2017, Cheryl started her own career consulting company. She credits her humble beginnings and her dynamic life path for developing in her an ability “to help people meet their potential.” Now living in Texas with her four children, Cheryl still credits New Moms for providing a safe environment at a critical time in her life, and allowing her to focus on her next steps. With her love for people and her desire to give back, Cheryl aims to one day become a COO.
