Participating citizens shared deeply personal experiences with the Oak Park Police Department during two community police listening sessions, but it remains unclear if

any police officers attended any of the virtual sessions held on Aug. 6.

“If they watched, they did as private citizens and were not required to notify me or the village,” Police Chief LaDon Reynolds wrote in an Aug. 6 email to Wednesday Journal.

Described as an opportunity for “anyone who has any type of experiences with Oak Park to share their story” by session moderator and Assistant Village Attorney Rasheda Jackson, the listening sessions were a part of the village board’s pledge to address racism associated with law en-

forcement.

The board intends to use the testimonials shared to guide conversations future conversations.

“The listening sessions were designed to take place without the police being involved to foster an environment of openness and candor,” Reynolds said in the email. “There was no one assigned to participate.”

It is unclear if Reynolds himself watched.

mericans wake up each morning to banner headlines describing the latest urban eruption and go to bed reeling from seemingly endless TV images of burning buildings, overturned cars, and rampaging youths. These are not singular events. The whole country, it seems, is on fire and the anarchy in the inner city may spread to more affluent neighborhoods.

People are frightened and angry. Because the riots spread quickly from one city to another, the conclusion that they are somehow linked, possibly orchestrated by agitators — perhaps even Russian agents — seems plausible to many and absolutely incontrovertible to some. It is a heyday for conspiracy theorists and particularly white supremacists. Generally, there is an appetite for suppressive action, almost without regard to what form it might take.

It is the summer of 1967.

Those words were plucked virtually verbatim from Robert Shellow’s introduction to the 2018 volume of The Harvest of American Racism: The Political Meaning of Violence in the Summer of 1967.

When that happens, protecting couture retailers should not take priority over working toward systemic redress.

I adamantly disagree with the destruction of property and I think those who do it should be punished, but I must nonetheless concede that the system that made possible my peaceful strolls through the Gold Coast, my sightseeing along the Magnificent Mile, is morally, culturally, spiritually and economically bankrupt. I know it. You know it.

Everyone knows it. The looters know it, too.

Now, as then, the country has two choices.

Masks that reveal while covering up

he small gallery and print studio sits quietly, for now, at 29 Harrison St., in the Oak Park Arts District. With Expressions Graphics classes canceled and group studio print work on hold, not only have the print cooperative’s creative activities been impacted, the nonprofit’s bottom line has too.

“We have been struggling with ideas to reopen our small studio/gallery,” said Janet Schill, executive director of Expressions Graphics, “so I started thinking: People walk by all the time and look in the window.

Why don’t we make our window more of a gallery?”

The idea to feature artful masks was born. Multiples for Masks will be exhibited in the window gallery for anyone to view safely outside through August. Each mask submission brings in a $10 donation for the gallery. And, said Schill, commenting on the unexpected generosity of the artists, “some of the masks are being sold and the money given to our studio.”

After the exhibition, the masks that are wearable will be distributed to homeless people in Chicago.

More than two dozen masks have come in and more are on their way, Schill said.

“They are mainly from our members who also reached out and brought in masks from friends and relatives,” she said. “One came from Florida and one is coming from Texas.”

Expressions Graphics continues to look for ways to earn income as the pandemic goes on.

“We have been struggling,” Schill said.

“Our studio functions on income from our membership program, our studio use fees and class fees. All of that is stalled at the moment.”

To bring in some funds, there is a gallery show of screen prints by board member Jess Christy with proceeds of the works — collected on a pay-what-you-want donation ba-

sis — going to Expressions Graphics to pay the bills.

Expressions Graphics has also received relief funding from the Oak Park Area Arts Council through the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation’s Rapid Response and Recovery Fund, the Illinois Arts Council, and ResCorp.

The next exhibit is “Her Voice,” which features female printmakers and guest artists. “The event brings women from different art backgrounds together to interact in a shared studio space,” according to the website. The show is scheduled to run Aug. 26 through Oct. 17.

D97 art department finds new ways to connect

Art as tool for kids in baffling times

While there are many questions regarding schools’ decisions on how to open and function this August, one thing is clear. District 97’s Elementary Art Department is working toward bringing the best possible experience to balance the days of the 3,900 students they serve in Oak Park.

“As an art teacher, I see firsthand what a powerful tool art can be for kids to express themselves,” said Jenny Raia, who is going into her 17th year teaching art at Longfellow School and is also the District 97 Elementary Art Department Chair.

“For many, creating art is an emotional outlet that enables them to navigate complicated and sometimes difficult feelings. Just getting lost in the creative process can be meditative. This is such a confusing, trying time in our world. Art helps us build connections with one another and communicate our identity and experiences.”

To prepare for the fall, Raia said many of the district’s art teachers have been training and teaching this summer “to improve our remote learning, teaching practice.” A D97 Professional Learning Committee is also providing specific training to Elementary Specialists - the art, music and PE teachers.

In a change from the Spring, “students will have a more consistent daily schedule and expectations,” said Raia. This includes live, virtual face-to-face time for K-5 students for Specials (Art, Music and PE) each week and independent work time. For art, new material and projects will be introduced through Zoom in synchronous learning time. Then, during independent, or asynchronous, learning time, students work on the projects on their own. Raia said art teachers “will be available to work with students on an as-needed basis, to answer questions, provide feedback and to check in” during this time.

Since students are creating visual art projects at home, what supplies may be available is kept in mind. During virtual learning in the spring, Raia said they always included a pencil and paper option for their lessons. The planning continues for fall.

“We’ve been working as a team to figure out the best way to distribute special supplies to students and to make sure all of our kids have access,” Raia said. “There’s actually so much we can do with basic school supply materials like pencil, paper, scissors, crayons and markers to teach foundational art skills. It’s really been an exciting, creative problem-solving exercise for all of the art teachers.”

The weekly lessons and dedicated website (https://sites. google.com/op97.org/d97elementaryart/home) continue what was created in the spring by the art department with projects for each grade level. The teachers provide essential art concepts, art-making tutorials and videos, and feature a diverse selection of artists and styles. A Student Gallery on the site makes up for work not being displayed on the walls and the showcases at the schools.

Although they may not be meeting in person in classrooms first trimester, the act of learning, creating and benefitting from experiencing art will still be present.

“Of course, and not unimportantly, artmaking can be a vehicle for great joy,” Raia said. “We get to see some excellent smiles and happy faces on our Art Zooms.”

Music by the Numb3rs counts up to 9

njoying beautifully performed music in one’s home isn’t new. The earliest examples of instrumental music composed for home performance date from the 15th century. What is new is the innovative approach the Symphony of Oak Park-River Forest has taken to the concept of chamber music with their “Music by the Numb3rs” series this summer.

Bringing nine performances, played in different rooms in Oak Park’s Cheney Mansion, members of the Symphony are counting up — from solo works to a nonet each Wednesday — all available virtually for safe viewing by audience members.

From the first performance, the goal is to draw viewers in. It is a solo piece, Bach’s Chaconne, performed by principal viola, Uli Widmaier. The music is captivating, but so is the ambiance — a room filled with windows at twilight with the greenery of gardens just beyond.

The Symphony has been partnering with the Park District of Oak Park (PDOP) to bring outdoor concerts to the grounds of Cheney Mansions for the past few of summers, according to Symphony board member Cheryl Flinn.

“Then this year, it became apparent that we wouldn’t be able have the same type of performance, and Susan [Crane, special

events manager, PDOP] offered to host a virtual series,” Flinn said. “She was kind enough to offer the mansion for rehearsals as well as performances for some of our larger ensembles. Finding a space large enough to hold even 10 people for sociallydistanced rehearsals was a challenge.”

Also drawing the viewer in while during Music by the Numb3rs performances is the quality of the recordings. This is no Zoom presentation from a practice room. The Symphony’s cellist, Alex Groesch, from local Butterfly Productions, created the miniconcert vignettes and the professional quality of the sound, lighting and video puts this on a different level from much of the virtual performance work available now.

Each concert is introduced by Maurice Boyer, conductor of the series and associate conductor of the Symphony of OP-RF. He talks about the pieces, adding to the understanding and appreciation of works composed by familiar names such as Vivaldi, Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Schubert, Schumann and Grieg — and some not so familiar like Kozeluh, Poulenc and Schutz.

While creating the series was a team effort by Symphony board members and others, Boyer played a key role: selecting the repertoire, and rehearsing and conducting the larger groups of musicians, according to Beth Hoover, Symphony general manager and oboist in the orchestra. She credits Boyer with suggesting a series “starting with

Each concert lasts about 20 minutes and features one or two works. In the duet concert, the audience is introduced to a fatherson pair of trumpet players. According to Flinn, the whole family is in the Symphony.

“The parents met in the orchestra, and now their two kids play in the orchestra,” she said. This is followed by young Concerto Competition finalist Elinor Detmer, who passionately plays the violin along with piano in the second featured work.

A special treat comes with the quartet performance, a piece by Beethoven, “Three Equali” for four trombones. A trombone quartet is not often seen, and this one features Jay Friedman, music director for the Symphony of OP-RF, who has been principal trombonist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1965. Friedman returns on trombone in the upcoming Aug. 19 performance, which includes another trombone quartet performing Poulenc’s “Four Little Prayers of St. Francis Assisi.” He also plays in the septet, performing Schutz’s “Attendite, popule meus, legem meam” and “Fili mi, Absalon.”

The Music by the Numb3rs series started on July 8 and concludes with the nonet concert on Sept. 2, but the complete series may be viewed through Sept. 7 (Labor Day). Individual concerts can also be purchased for

any upcoming Wednesday dates.

Continuing to bring music into the lives of their audience as well as staying engaged themselves has been important to the local orchestra during the challenges presented to performing arts groups during the pandemic.

“We were very concerned about staying current in our audience’s minds” Hoover said. “We had our thinking caps on trying to decide what to do next and this was a great solution; not only would our name be out in the public but it gave some of our orchestra members a chance to perform.”

The Symphony’s last rehearsal was March 11, just before their concert at Symphony Center, in Chicago, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. That April concert, held once every two years, is a major fundraiser for the orchestra and a special event for the musicians, which includes several area choirs.

“When that and five other events were canceled, we were all quite depressed,” said Hoover, who came up with the summer series’ name and also performs in the Octet.

“For me, Music by the Numb3rs has been a lifesaver!”

Personal experiences from page 1 asked Jackson point blank who the listeners were on the session before beginning her testimonial.

“It’s being broadcast on our village’s [TV] channel,” Jackson responded. “It’s also going to be archived on the village’s website.”

Jackson did not share whether any trustees or village staff had tuned in, and it was not clear if she knew.

Community members who shared stories of past interactions had varying levels of satisfaction. Descriptions of police behavior and attitudes ranged from professional and respectful to dismissive, flippant and unresponsive.

Chris Rooney, an Oak Park resident of about 25 years, called his experiences with police in Oak Park “pretty good, not great” in his testimony. Rooney said he believed racism in policing reflects racism in the wider community.

Rooney, who is Black, shared an experience from about 10 years ago when he was out at night with a flashlight looking for his girlfriend’s dog and someone called the police on him.

“It was just an instance of the police being called in response to what the residents

Like Straw, Judith Alexander said in her experience, police officers in Oak Park were professional and polite. She mentioned that police officers had caught the people who burglarized her home.

“I recognize there are issues with profiling,” Alexander said, but asked that those who “are looking at this issue to please not do anything that would jeopardize public safety.”

During his testimony, Jameel Rafia thanked the village for organizing the sessions but stated that more needed to be done to root out racism in Oak Park.

“Years of institutionalized racism has given white people a sense of superiority,” Rafia said. “You give them a badge, you give them a gun, you give them a stick and you send them out in the community.”

Rafia described his experience with Oak Park police as one “met with sadness.”

He shared a particular instance when his young son and his friend wanted to rake leaves in their neighborhood. They went door to door, rakes in hand, asking neighbors if they could rake their leaves.

“Someone on this block called the police on my son,” Rafia said.

Six police cars circled the two young Black boys and held them for 30 minutes, according to Rafia.

“What is it about Black skin that activates this hate in white police officers?” Rafia asked.

Rafia also shared a time when he was riding his bike out of his garage and a police officer stopped him. The officer, Rafia said, told him there had been a string of garage burglaries in the area.

“No there hadn’t because I would have heard it from my beat officer,” Rafia said.

The police officer reportedly asked Rafia why he was coming out of his garage and if he lived nearby. He also asked Rafia to show his identification.

Like Straw, Rafia referred to data found in the Freedom to Thrive policing report, indicating police stop Black people more often than they do white people.

“You can dislike me, you can dislike white people, but you cannot dispute the numbers,” he said.

Rafia concluded his testimony by saying that, although people are working for change, it will take time to reverse the deepseated racism in the United States.

“Racism is baked into the cake of who America is.”

Trustees respond to listening sessions on policing

Following Oak Park’s two “police listening sessions,” members of the Village Board of Trustees spoke with Wednesday Journal to share their thoughts on what they heard and the next steps the village should take to address racism.

“There are residents of Oak Park who have had really unfortunate and unacceptable interactions with the police that are classic examples of racial profiling,” said Trustee Susan Buchanan.

Based on the experiences shared during the sessions, many trustees agreed that racial profiling is not exclusively a problem within the police department but a problem in the wider community, with some Oak Park residents dialing 911 on Black neighbors for matters unrelated to safety or crimes.

“Oak Park residents are the ones performing the racial profiling in a lot of cases,” said Buchanan. “It has to stop.”

Jameel Rafia, Johntia Williams and Chris Rooney were among session participants relating encounters where perceived racism and racial profiling came from members of the community.

“We have a lot of people calling the police for no good reason,” said Trustee Deno Andrews. “I’ve heard story after story of people having the police called on them or their children.”

Trustee Simone Boutet agreed that many testimonials shared a common theme of racial profiling at the hands of neighbors and community members.

“It seems there’s an issue of people calling the police on people being Black,” said Boutet. “You could say walking while Black, driving while Black, being outside while Black.”

That community-based racial profiling makes simply going outside a risk for Black people, she added.

“That’s wrong,” said Boutet, noting she would have preferred more interactive listening sessions.

“I thought the process was odd,” she said.

Trustee Dan Moroney believes part of the racial profiling may come from the police department’s “Guide to the Suspicious,” which is posted on the village website. The guide directs residents to contact police over anything “that seems even slightly out of place or that is occurring at an unusual time of day [and] could be criminal activity.

“We need to look into the ‘Guide to the Suspicious.’ Maybe it’s outdated; maybe it’s causing more unintended consequences than we’d like,” he added.

While he knows there is relevancy in the points raised during the listening sessions, Moroney said Oak Park needs to include crime rates in police reform discussions.

“The fact of the matter is, there are over the past five years, 1,600 crimes committed on average,” he said, noting that he got that number from the village website.

“To ignore crime, to say that it’s not an issue, is doing residents a disservice.”

While she did not watch the sessions, Trustee Arti Walker-Peddakotla stated she read press coverage of the sessions and was not surprised by the content of the testimonials.

“These comments mirror some of the comments we’ve heard at the board table already,” said Walker-Peddakotla. “This why I think that the community listening sessions were necessary.”

She was “grateful” for the people who spoke during the sessions and those who have shared their experiences with police and racism previously.

“These are all experiences of trauma and they’re sharing it in a very public way,” she said. “That takes a lot of courage.”

Walker-Peddakotla would like to hear the Oak Park Police Department respond to these testimonials and the Freedom to Thrive statistics many people shared during the sessions.

“I think there should be some protocols that operators go through whereby they determine if there is an illegal activity taking place,” Buchanan said. “There should be some type of triaging of whether the person is actually performing an illegal act versus just looking suspicious.”

Buchanan also said she has learned a considerable amount through the village’s policing discussions and community listening sessions.

“For those of us who don’t experience negative interactions with the police, this is an eye-opener.”

Donor Awareness Month prompts local campaign

Loretto, Gift of Hope encouraging West Siders to become organ donors

Even under the best of circumstances, there are fewer non-white organ donors than there are white ones. Since transplants tend to be more successful if the organs come from donors who share the recipients’ ethnic background, this means that Black, Hispanic and Asian patients have to wait longer to get transplants.

That is why the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration and several national organ donation nonprofits have designated August as National Minority Donor Awareness Month.

Throughout August, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, which is based in west suburban Itasca, has teamed up with Austin’s Loretto Hospital, 645 S. Central Ave., to encourage Austin and Oak Park residents to join the organ and tissue donor registry.

With COVID-19 pandemic still raging, the outreach is limited to online events and video segments played on Loretto’s internal TV system. But the two organizations are hopeful that, by spotlighting local organ donors, they will be able to get their message out.

According to federal statistics, as of 2019,

There are, of course, critics.

Lisa Reed, who lives on the corner of Wesley Avenue and Van Buren Street, called the program a “recipe for someone to get hurt” in a Facebook post.

“On our part of Van Buren, it doesn’t make any sense because we have a commercial area,” said Reed.

Reed believes the village executed the “Slow Streets” pilot poorly by including that section of Van Buren as a part of the program.

“Maybe it makes sense in other parts of Oak Park,” said Reed.

She also expressed disappointment that the village had not informed neighbors of the program’s implementation.

“On Monday morning, the barricades showed up,” said Reed. “But there was no communication. There was no email. There was no letter.”

Newton, who lives in northwest Oak Park, drove down with her young daughter to rollerblade on the designated “slow streets.”

She would like to see the village widen the program.

“I’m hoping they move it up by us, then we won’t have to drive,” Newton said.

While some, including Village Engineer Bill McKenna, have voiced safety concerns about cars driving on designated “slow” streets, Newton said she hadn’t encountered more than a few cars.

“There’s been a few,” she said. “Some have

pulled over, but they’ve all been good.”

Others have expressed their distaste for “Slow Streets” in a less than elegant fashion by tagging the signage with spray paint.

Vandals graffitied signs at Grove Avenue and Van Buren, as well as other intersections along Jackson Boulevard west of Oak Park Avenue.

Lindsay Ambrose, who lives off Harvey and Van Buren, really likes having a portion of “Slow Streets” in her neighborhood.

“It feels good, especially for young [bicycle] riders,” said Ambrose, while out biking with her small children. “It’s nice just to have more space.”

Ambrose’s children also like the program; while Ambrose stopped to talk to Wednesday Journal, her son made use of the extra space by riding his bicycle in wide circles.

According to Ambrose, drivers have respected the “Slow Street” designation, lowering their speed accordingly.

“The signs help, I think,” Ambrose said.

Dima Ali, a mother of two who lives on Harvey Avenue, said she “loves” the “Slow Streets” program.

“I wish other streets could have this experience because it’s really nice,” Ali said.

Her neighbors also have expressed their support for the program, according to Ali.

From Aug. 5 until the end of the month, TV sets inside Loretto Hospital will be playing a video showing donation facts and stories of minority organ donors. Gift of Hope is also organizing a Facebook Live discussion hosted by the family of one of the donors featured in the video.

Evan Porter, who was Black, passed away from cardiac arrest while at Loretto in February 2019. He was 18 years old.

“Before he passed, Evan wrote a special poem titled ‘My Afterglow,’ a fitting description of the lasting legacy Evan and other donors like him have left in the world through the gift of donation,” according to the Gift of Hope statement.

Owesu explained that, on Aug. 7, the hospital and the nonprofit kicked off the online registration drive on their websites and social media accounts. Other virtual discussions will be held throughout the month of August.

Owesu said that residents are also encouraged to stop by Loretto to see the “Hope and Life for Everyone” mural, which has been hanging over the southwest corner of the building since June 2019.

Loretto commissioned artist Mauricio Ramirez, of Austin, to paint something that showed the cultural and ethnic diversity of organ donors.

Ali said she understands why some people might not like “Slow Streets” or see it as an inconvenience, but she feels “Slow Streets” has made her neighborhood safer for socially distanced outdoor recreation and exercise.

“I wish they did it earlier,” Ali said.

Since the shelter-in-place order, Ali said that people have driven at higher speeds in the area.

“They’re zooming. They don’t stop at stop signs because the streets were empty,” she said. “I feel like people are feeling safer now, especially when walking.”

Ali also said that having street access makes social distancing easier because, even while outside, she tries to avoid people not wearing masks.

Ali’s friend and Berwyn resident Beth Dougherty expressed a desire to have a “Slow Streets” program implemented in her neighborhood.

“I wish Berwyn would do this,” said Dougherty, who stopped by Ali’s for a socially distanced chat. “It’s fabulous.”

A step closer to storm water master plan for River Forest Village to request qualifications and proposals from engineering firms

John Anderson, director of public works, estimated it will take 2-3 months to create the RFQ/RFP, which will be presented to the village board for approval. He estimates it will take an engineering firm approximately 12 months to complete the master plan at a cost between $140,000 and $180,000.

Trustee Katie Brennan said she agreed with creating a comprehensive plan and suggested that the village consider contacting the Center for Neighborhood Technologies.

She also recommended that village officials look at how much surface property owners are allowed to cover with non-permeable material such as concrete or asphalt.

Village President Cathy Adduci supported the creation of the master plan.

“We need a comprehensive look,” she said. “Police, fire and infrastructure — this is what we do. We owe it to our residents.”

Four dead in Harlem Ave. car crash Vehicle hit Starbucks; accident under investigation

At least four people died after a car crashed into Starbucks on the 400 block of Harlem Ave. at 12:49 a.m. on Aug. 9. The vehicle struck a planter, light pole and the wall of the closed coffee shop.

The car was occupied by five people, two of whom were dead on the scene, and two transported to a local hospital where they died as a result of their injuries. According to a press release from the River Forest

River Forest, Oak Park and Forest Park police responded and secured the scene, and the West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force (WESTAF) was called to assist with the crash investigation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact the River Forest Detective Unit at 708-366-7125.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased,” said River Forest Chief James O’Shea in the press release.

According to the medical examiner, the deceased are Javier Martinez (20), Wendy Salgado (20), Christian Isidro (21) and Astrid Reyes (19).

Berwyn music venue brings together music, drinks and food

Will Duncan, owner of Fitzgerald’s, at 6615 Roosevelt Road in Berwyn, has embraced his love of collaboration to lure both music and burger lovers to his Berwyn venue throughout August.

After spending decades working in the music, restaurant and bar industries, Duncan made his longtime dream of owning a music venue come true when he purchased Fitzgerald’s in March of 2020. Just two weeks later, a global pandemic turned the music industry upside-down.

“It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride,” said Duncan. “But I’ve always been a thrill seeker.”

Ever the optimist, Duncan is dedicated to making the outdoor area an appealing and safe place for the community. Pooling diverse skill sets makes for a more memorable event, according to Duncan, and they have teamed up with a quartet of chefs to bring a bevy of burgers to their generously-sized patio on Saturdays in August (5-10 p.m.).

“Collaborations bring something new to the table every time,” said Duncan. “We have the music covered and a great bar, but the food element was missing.”

The “Burgers are Best” event series kicked off on Aug. 8 with music from Dozen Buzzin Cousins and Fareed Haque & His Family Band. The burger du jour had a decidedly local feel with Brendan O’Connor of Big Guys Sausage Stand, 7021 Roosevelt Road, manning the grill.

“I love serving up safe burgers that put smiles on faces,” said O’Connor. “And I have a soft spot for Fitzgerald’s because I grew up going there. Will Duncan is new, and he is doing a fantastic job.”

In addition to serving up a classic burger topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion, O’Connor dabbled on the creative side offering a Bloody Mary Burger.

The nine-ounce beef patty was larger than the standard Big Guys Burger and came topped with 18-month-aged gouda, fried egg, pancetta, arugula, roasted garlic aioli and a house-made Bloody Mary Ketchup. The sauce made from fire-roasted Roma tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, and lime brought a brunch beverage flavor to the sturdy burger.

The crowd-pleasing theme extends for the next three weekends bringing in an array of bands and three additional chef-created burgers.

Masks are required and reservations are accepted on the patio. Half of all available tables are left to accommodate walk-in customers. Fans of both burgers and tunes are encouraged to pop by — with proper social

distancing, the patio holds at least 80 guests.

On Aug. 15, Berwyn resident, Chef John Manion of Chicago’s El Che Steakhouse will fire up the grill while The Corcoran Brothers Band and Chicago Farmer contribute tunes for the evening. Manion’s burger will undoubtedly have an Argentinian twist and embrace his passion for live fire cooking.

Additionally, El Che meal kits, meats and provisions will be available via pre-order on El Che’s website for pick up.

Chef Michael Lanzerotte of Americanfare hot spot Saint Lou’s Assembly, and Oak Park’s School of Rock Band will provide the burgers and music on Aug. 22. The Chandelier Swingers and Toronzo Cannon & The Chicago Way will provide entertainment as folks enjoy a burger by Nick Jirasek of sandwich-focused newcomer, Big Kids.

The Burgers are Best events are an effort to stay positive, stay focused and stave off challenges. Duncan noted there are some “bleak aspects” of both the music and restaurant industries at the moment, but he finds optimism in what he sees coming from communities that surround Fitzgerald’s.

“Community members are supportive, connected and engaged,” said Duncan.

“These events are going to be awesome.”

Two men beat woman in armed robbery

Two men, one armed, reportedly robbed a woman and a man in the 800 block of South Taylor Street, Oak Park, on Aug. 5 at about 4:50 p.m.

According to police, the two offenders began punching the woman and then removed her purse, which contained her passport, cash and a cellphone. The male victim told officers that the offenders took cash and an unknown amount of drugs from his pockets.

Police reports described the first offender as being a Black male with his hair in short twists, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and carrying a black handgun. The second offender was described as being Black and wearing a blue jacket with a black shirt. The two offenders were with two females. All four fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Burglary ■ Someone broke the glass to the front door of Grape Leaves Restaurant, 100 S. Oak Park Ave., then unlocked the door and took cash from the register between during the overnight hours of Aug. 5-6. The estimated loss was $1,520.50.

■ Someone broke into a residential garage in the 1000 block of South Ridgeland Avenue through a side service door sometime between 4 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 9 a.m. on Aug. 6 and removed a women’s black Schwinn bicycle with attached milk crate, a black and red Coleman 3.5-horsepower go-cart, Husky power tools and black 14-by-8-inch speakers.

■ Someone took a yellow women’s Trek 7100 bicycle from an unlocked garage in the 1100 block of South Elmwood Avenue between 8:30 a.m. and 3:25 p.m. on Aug. 6. The bike later was located in the 900 block of South Elmwood Avenue and returned to the victim.

■ Someone broke into a home, possibly through an unlocked living room window, in the 300 block of North Maple Avenue between 7 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 4:40 a.m. on Aug. 7 and then ransacked the interior and took cash. The estimated loss is $10,000.

■ Someone broke into an unlocked vehicle parked in the 200 block of Pleasant Street between 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 8:45 a.m., on Aug. 8 and took a gray United Airlines backpack containing a pair of sunglasses in a black leather case, a passport, work identification, a wooden case, a blue wallet and miscellaneous paperwork. Estimated loss is $130.

■ Someone broke into an unlocked vehicle between 5 p.m. on Aug 6 and 9 a.m. on Aug. 7 in the 200 block of Pleasant Street and took a USB cable, prescription glasses, masks and cash.

■ Someone broke into an unlocked vehicle parked in the

100 block of South Harvey Avenue between 9 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 2 p.m. on Aug. 7 and removed a black Adidas backpack containing a driver’s license and debit card.

Theft ■ Someone removed a package containing a blue Annabella brand sofa bed from a residence in the 900 block of South Lombard Avenue between 2:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., July 30. The estimated loss is $299.

■ Someone cut the catalytic converter from a Honda CRV parked in the 900 block of South Taylor Avenue during the overnight hours of Aug. 7-8. Estimated loss is $1,200.

■ Someone removed the passenger side mirror from a red 2006 Porsche Cayenne parked in a lot in the 600 block of South Austin Boulevard between 6:30 p.m. on July 31 and 1 a.m. on Aug. 6. Estimated loss is $1,000.

■ A woman and a man took cash out of a Chicago resident’s hands in the first block of Madison Street at 4:13 p.m. on Aug. 7. The estimated loss is $400.

■ Someone took an unlocked green and yellow Schwinn Merata sports bike with attached black basket during the overnight hours of Aug. 7-8 in the 700 block of North Marion Street. Estimated loss is $400.

■ A man was observed removing an orange Mongoose mountain bike from underneath a porch in the 600 block of North Humphrey Avenue at 2 p.m. on Aug. 6. The estimated loss is $300.

These items, obtained from the Oak Park Police Department, came from reports Aug. 3- Aug. 10 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large, and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

Missing Oak Park man found dead Claude Hughes, 77, found in forest preserve

By STACEY SHERIDAN Staff Reporter

Nearly two weeks after his disappearance, Oak Park resident Claude Hughes, 77, was found dead

in the Sunset Bridge Forest Preserve on 1st Avenue near the Des Plaines River. The Oak Park Police Department confirmed Hughes’ death in an Aug. 7 Facebook post.

“We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the post reads.

The Facebook post also stated that the Oak Park Police Department has contacted Hughes’ family.

Hughes, who had dementia and walked with a

limp, reportedly went missing sometime between the evening of July 26 and the morning of July 27. On Aug. 3, the village of Oak Park sent out a request for community assistance in locating Hughes.

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office is overseeing the investigation into Hughes’ death, according to the Oak Park Police Department’s Facebook post.

“I believe that was the right thing, but we’re faced with that crisis right now, particularly in Black and Brown communities,” Johnson said. “In Maywood, 25 percent of that village is unemployed — that’s a quarter of an entire village. And the frightening part is that in a couple of weeks, people will no longer have stability within something that is very basic and fundamental and that’s housing.”

D90 switches course, will go remote when classes resume Rising Cook County COVID-19 positivity rate major concern

After voting for an in-person return to school at a July 27 special school board meeting, River Forest Elementary School District 90 has reversed course and will implement a fully remote plan to begin the 2020-21 school year. At a special meeting on Aug. 10, the board voted five to one to begin the year remotely. Barb Hickey cast the sole dissenting vote, and Stacey Williams was out of town.

In an Aug. 6 letter to families, Superintendent Ed Condon announced the change, stating that “the transition to full-remote learning is in response to mounting concern about the sustained increase of the COVID-19 positivity rate in Cook County, shifting guidance from local, state, and national public health agencies and lack of specific directives for schools about responding to potential disease transmission.”

The district wants to give families enough time to make arrangements for the upcoming school year, the memo stated.

Remote learning was always a possibility for River Forest schools. The district’s overarching return-to-school plan makes clear that, under certain conditions, a transition to remote learning could potentially be made.

These conditions include the school district being unable

to implement or sustain operations in a safe manner and heightened incidence of illness occurring in the local community.

Suburban Cook County’s COVID-19 positivity rate increased from 5.2 percent to 5.8 percent in the week from July 22 to 29. Because it’s unknown whether that upward trend will continue, said the D90 memo, the decision to return to full-remote learning was made to allow families to make necessary arrangements in the three weeks remaining before school begins.

The change will also give teachers the necessary time to focus on curricula and lesson plans to make remote learning as robust and challenging as possible. Teachers will conduct full-remote learning from their classrooms, where they will have full access to their supplies, teaching materials, technology resources and the district’s network.

Remote learning will look different than it did in the spring, according to the memo. A few differences will be: ■ Enhanced student engagement through daily learning and high-interest activities.

■ Provision of ongoing social-emotional supports.

■ Increased communication through the streamlined use of learning platforms.

■ Development of clear remote-learning expectations for teachers, parents and students.

■ Improved consistency and accountability with reinstated grading practices, regular student feedback and instructional rigor across grade levels.

“Between now and Oct.1, the district will continue to monitor COVID-19 resurgence metrics, await stable guidance

from local, state and national public health agencies, and pursue specific directives for response protocols to potential COVID-19 transmission in schools,” the school district memo states. “On Oct. 1, conditions will be assessed regarding our ability to physically return students and staff to school in a safe manner. Our objective is to accomplish this goal as soon as possible.”

D90 is working with West Cook YMCA to provide remote learning supervision for kids from kindergarten through sixth grade; more information will be sent to families on Aug. 15.

After 26 years, Fenwick girls water polo coach retires

Jack Wagner leaves the job with nine state titles and more than 600 wins

When Jack Wagner came back to Fenwick in 2000 to serve as the school’s girl’s water polo head coach, his goal was to find players who had the drive to compete at a high level.

It didn’t matter if a player showed the promise to be a program-altering star or a two-year benchwarmer. He demanded the best out of all his players.

That is the legacy he leaves behind entering retirement after 26 years of coaching girls water polo. With nine state titles under his belt and more than 600 wins during his tenure at the helm of the program, Wagner walks away with nothing left to prove.

“Spending time at practice, getting to know people, letting them get to know me and winning some state championships along the way, I am a really lucky guy,” said Wagner.

“I feel like they would have been successful whether I was there or not because [the players] were so hard working. I am the guy that gets the credit but I will always appreciate Fenwick and the players who worked not only in the pool but in the classroom as well.”

Citing the fragile state of IHSA sports and being able to spend more time with his family during the pandemic, Wagner was able to make his decision with more ease than he would if the circumstances were different.

“When I came back to Fenwick after coaching at Indiana

University, I had no idea that I would have a family,” said Wagner. “I always had the thought in the back of my head that when I have a son and he graduates high school that would be a good time for me to walk away. He graduated this year and, honestly, this whole COVID thing gave me more time to spend with my family. It made me realize that it was the right time to go.”

Over his 20 years as the school’s water polo head coach, Wagner established Fenwick as a championship juggernaut. His teams have a 9-1 record at the state finals and he led the program to back-to-back-to-back championships from 2004-06.

He also was an assistant coach for the Friars from 199398 before leading Indiana University’s first ever girls water polo team. He returned to Fenwick the following year.

However, he is most proud of how he handled his teams throughout the years.

“I never treated the girls any different than I would treat the boys,” said Wagner, “And not only that, I treated them the way they would be treated in college if they went on to play at that level. When they walked onto the pool deck at college, they knew what to do and I think they always appreciated that.”

Now that he has left Fenwick, Wagner said he’ll swap coaching duties for fishing, home landscaping and being with his family.

“I’m a novice golfer,” Wagner said, laughing.

In a press release, Athletic Director Scott Thies praised Wagner for his time and commitment to the program.

“We thank Coach Jack Wagner for his tireless efforts in leading one of the most successful programs in the history

“Coach Wagner will be missed but will always be a huge part of the Fenwick community, and we look forward to continuing a tradition of excellence in girls water polo at Fenwick.”

According to the press release, Fenwick is actively looking for a new head coach to take over the program.

Coaches, players react to shortened seasons Logistics being worked out

Over the last five months, high school athletes, parents and coaches have waited for a firm answer on what a year in prep sports would look like. Last week, the IHSA announced it will pivot from a traditional three-season campaign and replace it with four shortened seasons.

Some of the most notable changes in the schedule include football being moved to the spring along with boys soccer and girls volleyball. Cross country, golf, girls tennis and swimming and diving will be the only sports that will commence when the season opens.

Even with a tentative schedule in place (Aug. 10-Oct. 24 for fall sports), there is still a lot left up in the air.

“I’d love to have a sectional, conference and state meet but I have no idea what that will look like under these circumstances,” said OPRF boys cross country and track coach Chris Baldwin. “I have seen preliminary stuff where it’s three teams and no

more than 50 competitors in a race, but I really don’t know what it could look like. I know our athletic director is working on figuring that out, but the situation can change at any moment.”

One problem that athletic programs could run into as they try to plan the fall season is traveling from school to school. There have been theories floating around that teams could limit competition to conference-only matchups to limit travel. However, the IHSA states in its guidelines that social-distancing must occur when traveling to events.

This could present a problem for teams that have large rosters.

Trinity’s tennis head coach, Mary Smith, said there is some maneuvering teams can do to limit this potential obstacle. “[During previous meets], eight players compete but we bring more [players] than that because we have exhibition matches,” said Smith. “We aren’t going to do that this year. As far as buses, we have had a lot of discussions. I believe Trinity is going at 25 percent capacity [for buses] with windows open, masks on, temperatures taken and other standard protocols for large buses. But there is a lot left that we have to figure out.”

The athletic directors around the state will have to get creative in figuring out the logistics of the upcoming season, but the student-athletes seem content being able to have a somewhat abbreviated version of a sports season.

Fenwick’s Max Reese, who plays basketball and football for the Friars, is just relieved that he will get the chance to suit up at some point this academic year.

“We expected [football being moved to the spring] to happen, but in reality it’s not the worst thing that could have happened for us,” said Reese. “There were mixed emotions about it being moved, but I feel like everyone is just happy we will get to put pads on this season.”

In a normal year, football season would end before the start of the basketball season. This year, basketball will end on Feb. 13 before football officially begins on Feb. 15.

Having spent the summer getting into shape for football, Reese doesn’t think the transition will be too daunting for him not to participate in both sports.

“I pride myself on being a multi-sport athlete,” said Reese. “For football, I am working on strength and conditioning which is

what I will be doing for basketball. Right now, I’ll go through a strength and conditioning workout and then go shoot some hoops before getting a workout in with my trainer. Then I will go run some routes with our quarterback [Kaden Cobb], so I am wellrounded and ready for anything.”

Like Reese, OPRF swimmer Jasmine Woods is also content that there will be some form of a season this fall. Even with the challenge of monitoring COVID-19 symptoms in a sport that exclusively occurs indoors, Woods has faith in the precautions teams plan on taking this season.

“The last I heard, [the IHSA] is going to limit conference and state meets this year and spectators won’t be able to go to any of the meets, which will be different for us,” said Woods. “I think I can speak on behalf of the girls that we are just happy that things are going to be the way they are now rather than for us not to have a season.

“The seniors have worked so hard the last three years and were looking forward to the little stuff like leading chants, cheers and other things. It’s been nice to see everyone back together again and swim, but be safe at the same time.”

The Rule of Three rules!

T

he Rule of Three is a principle that suggests three events or characters recur, and are more effective, than other numbers. People seem to respond to groups of three better than other clusters of items.

The military uses threes as a teaching tool for recruits.

During the 1950s, three-dimensional films were introduced that appeared to have height, length and width, and therefore looked real.

While attending picnics, I often participated in three-legged races that generally left me sitting on the ground along with my partner.

When I graduated from high school, I wore a three-piece suit.

I have been to hotels that offer a threepiece living room suite, which is a sofa and two matching chairs.

When my uncle Gene and I were rehabbing our basement, I learned that threeply wood has three layers joined together.

Three quarters of something is threefourths of it, so a three-quarter-length coat is between the length of a jacket and a full-length coat.

The Three R’s have always meant basic education — readin’, ritin’, and ’rithmatic.

I learned how to ride a bicycle by first pedaling a three-wheeler.

There were three witches in Macbeth, but they were not called the “three bags full.”

During the late 1950s and the early 1960s, my mother’s favorite song was “Three Coins in the Fountain.” It took me a long time to get the lyrics from that song out of my head because she played it on the piano at least once a day for many months.

Thomas Jefferson wrote about “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” when he penned the Declaration of Independence.

Stop, Look and Listen are words-to-the-wise for pedestrians.

The Three Musketeers by Dumas was a favorite book of mine when I was in eighth grade.

In Latin class, I learned Caesar’s words — “I came, I saw, I conquered” — when my class studied the Gallic Wars.

The “red, white and blue” refers to our flag, which is something every Tom, Dick and Harry knows.

When it was time for me to do my chores when I was a youngster, I had better be ready, willing and, above all, able.

My grandfather used to say that something we were discussing was as American as “baseball, hot dogs and apple pie.”

Our second grade music teacher, Miss Dunn, taught us to sing “Three Blind Mice.”

The zaniest slapstick trios I ever saw on television were the Three Stooges and the Marx Brothers.

The Three Wise Men are mentioned in the Gospel of St. Matthew, which is read at many Christmas church services.

Nursery rhymes tell us about the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears and the Three Little Kittens.

A driving maneuver I learned at 16 years of age was the threepoint turn, which is a method of turning a car around to face the other direction by moving forward across the road then backward in the opposite direction across the road and then forward again.

Oh, yes, three strikes and you are out.

Certainly there are many more examples of the Rule of Three; how many can you think of ?

Freedom to Thrive’s police critique comes up short

T

he recent One View by Freedom to Thrive’s Kevin Barnhart [Alarming racial disparities in Oak Park policing, Viewpoints, Aug. 5], quite simply, reaches conclusions unwarranted by any supposed evidence he presents.

Nothing Barnhart produced proves racism by cops because adding up a few lines of figures is not analysis, unless you’re Donald Trump.

I’ve absolutely no doubt Black people continue to endure police stops at a far higher rate than Caucasians.

But the causal factors related to those circumstances are anything but certain, and Barnhart brings no clarity to the issue with his superficial and biased arguments. He not only does not identify what’s actually happening but disparages our local law enforcement with unsubstantiated accusations using data that is at best anecdotal.

Were the documented stops justified? What triggered them?

What was the resolution. And were the subjects Oak Park residents or from outside Oak Park?

Freedom to Thrive, which is actively seeking to change government policy, doesn’t say.

Yet they accuse Oak Park police of the serious misconduct of unfounded racial profiling, and village residents of racist fears, while offering no evidence for that claim except that far more Blacks are stopped and questioned than any other group.

“Black is the color of suspicion in Oak Park, especially for males,” Barnhart says. But he ignores another truth, that Black is the color of the majority of criminal activity in Oak Park. And that uncomfortable truth must be factored into any honest discussion.

And it must be just that — a discussion, a dialogue, not a monologue.

It’s one thing to point to out the denial that most whites have been guilty of, regarding the onerous realities Black people face. It’s quite another to treat anyone with legitimate questions or criticisms as if they’re coming from William Barr.

Freedom to Thrive has neither a monopoly on truth nor immunity from bias; not everyone who disagrees with their conclusions is a “denier “or trying to “distract” from the truth. There are numerous possible causal factors for the racial disparity in stops by Oak Park police.

I want to be absolutely clear — I blame the historical indifference of a white-dominated society for the injustices that plague Black America. Period. Full stop.

Education and employment and housing options were systematically denied Blacks and others for many decades. It must stop.

But I don’t accept unwarranted blame placed on officers of the Oak Park Police Department who have to deal daily with realities created by systemic racism.

Oak Park borders Chicago’s Austin neighborhood,

which has many active street gangs, and one of the largest concentrations of paroled felons in the country. A few years ago, a report by the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration stated that “roughly two-thirds of the 35,000 prisoners who are released from Illinois prisons each year return to just seven zip codes on the West and South sides of Chicago, where black male unemployment is over 40 percent.” Another paper estimated that approximately 30,000 ex-offenders were residing in Austin then.

When police get a call of a “Black male, 20 to 25 years old, 5-foot-7 to 5-foot 9, 140 to 160 pounds, medium build and dreadlocks, wearing a white T-shirt,” in an alley looking at garages, they don’t look for dumpy middle-aged white guys in suits heading to work.

That’s not bias.

Oak Park police are right to urge citizens to call them when they see suspicious activity. For every overwrought or even racist person calling on innocent Black kids playing baseball, there are dozens more reporting genuinely suspicious behavior.

Ironically, a closer look at what Barnhart and Paradisis found strongly suggests they need to take another look at the Field Contact statistics on which they base their conclusions. By the very numbers they use — 753 FILE field contacts in the 65½ months from January 2015 to June 2020 with Black subjects — the dozens of Oak Park police officers on the streets, who get on average 180 calls for service daily, purportedly had reasonable suspicion to conduct a field contact with a Black person an average of once every two and a half days.

And actually, of those 753 stops, 57 were for trespass, panhandling, junking and, best I can tell, soliciting (“SOLI”). So the more accurate number is 696.

I’ve long been disgusted with Republicans’ use of societal dog whistles, and their dishonesty in forming conclusions, then working backward to craft justifications for them. I have no tolerance when the same practices are used by the political left, pejorative terms like “deniers” and “distracting” that serve only to cut off dialogue.

Poorly analyzed research and unsubstantiated assumptions provide aid and comfort to those on the right who seek to dismiss liberal and progressive initiatives.

Oak Park isn’t perfect. But it’s not Ferguson Missouri, not Minneapolis, not Aurora, Colorado or Chicago. We need to raise the racial awareness of the overwrought few, not disparage the legitimate concerns of the majority. And Freedom to Thrive needs to do its homework, stop conflating local and national circumstances, and drop their one-size-fits-all approach.

King of the road

W

e’re looking hard for the upsides to the COVID-19 pandemic and we’ve found one in Oak Park’s nascent Slow Streets project. The pilot launched a week ago, covers five miles of an interior rectangle east to west, north to south. Cars, local traffic only, is allowed but their preeminence is diminished in favor of rollerbladers, skateboarders, joggers, kids on bikes and strollers.

The idea is to clear outdoor spaces across the neighborhoods where people can get some air, some exercise while maintaining essential social distancing. The notion has gained traction across the world as people came quickly to appreciate streets not clogged with cars as quarantine kept drivers home. A reclaiming of the crowded public way took hold across Europe and in some American cities.

In this village, an advocacy group called Bike Walk Oak Park advocated with the Transportation Commission to test the idea here. It was welcomed by the advisory commission, accepted by the village board as a test, and quickly implemented by an overworked public works department.

Not everyone is a fan. And no plan is perfect. During the Journal’s informal survey along a slow street in south Oak Park, a resident argued that its proximity to the commercial strip on the 800 block of South Oak Park Avenue would lead to a dangerous tangle with delivery trucks. We could see that happening. A happier camper out rollerblading with her daughter said they’d seen few cars and all of them moved slowly and carefully around fellow travelers.

We hope that when this pilot ends, as the weather turns, village officials will be in a mood to refine and expand Slow Streets next spring and not to just shut it down. We could all do with some reimagining of how we move through this town, the priorities we put on various means of transit.

Slow Streets is both simple and profound. Let it grow.

Madison’s reimagining The apartment project at Madison and Gunderson, approved last week by a 6-1 vote of the village board, is oversized. Even with modest tinkering pushed on the developer by frustrated neighbors and the Plan Commission, it is only a marginally improved project. It will impose itself over the neighborhood to the south.

Doesn’t mean we were surprised by the outcome. Critics can allude to greased wheels but the simple reality is that six years ago Oak Park very consciously rethought zoning on Madison Street and overhauled it to focus on residential development. It was a smart plan to turn around one of Oak Park’s most forlorn commercial stretches.

For 40 years, much of Madison Street languished after auto dealers took off for the far suburbs. Nothing happened. Hope that the long stretch would ever recover and become a fully occupied commercial district was a pipe dream.

Credit Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb with pushing hard for a new set of zoning regs that finally allowed residential apartments, townhomes, and condos to be built. Now from almost complete apartments at Lyman and Madison to the townhomes at Madison and Home the street has purpose and is beginning to pump out property taxes.

We remain confident a new Pete’s Fresh Market will arrive at Madison and Oak Park, that an also overlarge senior development will replace the vacant Cadillac dealership on the south side of the street at Euclid. It will be an astounding turnaround for a moribund street.

Yes, we wish the Gunderson project was a floor shorter. But we’ll be glad to see the derelict old auto building bite the dust.

And we’ll wait to see what is still possible in the days ahead.

Hungering for change, progress, growth

he following meditation includes wisdom from my back pocket.

More precisely the succession of tiny notebooks I carried back there, and two pens in my front pocket, for the past 20 years. I’ve been scribbling my thoughts, accented by collected quotes, poems and lists, snatches of conversations overheard, bumper stickers observed, song lyrics and lines from movies that moved me.

A sample is included below in italics. Unless otherwise indicated, the thoughts are mine.

Transcribing this trove (c. 80 notebooks) and organizing it by category, I wasn’t surprised how much material fit under the heading “change.” I have hungered for change my entire life. There is such a need for it.

The future is neither dystopian nor utopian but progressive, evolving. I’m no good at predicting the future, but I can tell you what won’t remain the same: Everything.

There is a difference between change and progress. All progress is change, but not all change is progress.

Trump’s election represented change for sure, but not progress. On the other hand, he may go down in history as one of our greatest change agents, though not the kind he had in mind.

Change is inevitable and usually healthy. Attempting to obstruct it, the Republican Party has, for the last 50 years, as William F. Buckley famously put it, “stood athwart history, shouting ‘Stop!’” As if that were possible. Screwing the lid on tighter and tighter only builds pressure. That lid is about to blow.

“Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” is an argument usually advanced by those who want to keep the bathwater. But at some point the old bathwater will make the baby sick.

The necessity of the past becomes, in the crucible of the present, the possibility of the future.

Progress is overdue with respect to this country’s deep, systemic racism. Change is upon us at last.

“Father, give us the courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other.”

(Reinhold Niebuhr, original wording) We’re told to change what we can and accept what we can’t. Are we able to tell the difference?

Aren’t we better at accepting what we can’t change than changing what we can? Is accepting what we can’t change just another excuse for inaction?

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”

(Angela Davis, taped to the window of The Book Table on Lake Street) What most needs to change is our caste system with its notion of a superior race and an inferior race. Racism has sickened this country and

Hope is a revolutionary act, an insistence on a better world than our smaller-minded fellow citizens just voted for.

Hope is an act of defiance against those determined, for complicated reasons, to keep us mired in their imaginary past.

Human beings are a ratio of being to becoming.

Becoming dominates when we need to grow — otherwise known as “crisis.”

It’s time to change what we cannot accept.

Racism is at the heart of everything that ails us, especially economic inequality.

There is a time for every purpose under heaven.

In the end, America takes the side of the people looking for rights. That’s one of the wonders of this country. Eventually we live up to our ideals.”

(Chris Matthews, from an ad for MSNBC) But we have never lived up to our highest ideal: Equality. No group of people is superior, no group inferior. “They” don’t have to rise to “our” lofty level in order to be accepted. They’re already at our level. In some ways, we have to rise to theirs.

Can we put up the white flag and surrender our white supremacy?

Things that bother me It bothers me that after three years, despite giving him the benefit of the doubt, I have concluded that the person with the most agency to launch a nuclear attack in the entire world is not a self-proclaimed “very stable genius” but rather a very unstable idiot. Frightening.

It bothers me that not so long ago religion could have provided solace, compassion and humility to people in perilous times such as these, but alas modernity and secularization has marginalized this once-powerful force.

It bothers me that some of the Black Lives Matter protesters prefer the selfish orgiastic pleasure of tearing down old statues to the harder work of convincing elected officials, or failing that, running for office to effect desired change. What would John Lewis say?

It bothers me that I almost didn’t write the preceding sentence lest, as a white person, I be charged with racism.

It bothers me that somehow along the way civic discourse died. We have come such a long way from a time in which neighbors could respectfully discuss the political and social issues of the day. Now each day many

of us self-quarantine in pods of red or blue, seeking the comfort of paid oracles and news readers who provide us with our own curated narrative of the news. We then share that narrative with friends and family who share our bias. We are active participants in our own brainwashing. As a result, instead of civic discourse, we just yell at each other about masks.

It bothers me that millions of people are spending billions of dollars on sanitizing objects, despite hardly any evidence that COVID can be gotten from touching such items. I feel sure that with all the contact tracing, it would have been big news that someone got it from a cellphone, golf flag stick, fruit, or car steering wheel. The CDC seems to indicate that infection is “unlikely.” How unlikely? One in a billion? In fairness I believe I read somewhere there was a dog who got it fetching a stick in Rouen, France. But it was a mild case.

Finally, it bothers me that teaching seems to have changed from a calling to just another job. I’m just glad that doctors, nurses, EMTs, drug store clerks and supermarket employees have not refused to work because of fear for their personal safety.

Where’d you come from?

How our staff came together

Elbow grease and an open door It was around 2014. I was a struggling, one-man news blog in Maywood, hungry for a readership. One day, I woke up to a Facebook message from Jean Lotus, editor at the time of the Forest Park Review, Wednesday Journal’s sister paper. She wanted to meet at Starbucks to talk about what I was doing over in Maywood with my blog. I was elated.

That conversation turned into a very casual, Wednesday Journalesque content trading arrangement, which turned into me freelancing for Forest Park Review and then Austin Weekly News. That turned into an offer from Dan to join the team as a full-time staffer, with the caveat that I continue doing my news blog for Maywood.

The arrangement was very organic, a throwback to when, with enough moxie, self-effacement and elbow grease, you could enter a journalism career through the backdoor — neat little resumes and prestige internships and gilded degrees be damned. I had none of that, only my WordPress account.

Looking back, it was all highly unusual for an industry that’s notoriously competitive. Six years and the first wave of a global pandemic later, we’re still chugging along. Perhaps we were on to something.

Austin roots lead to Journal job I grew up in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago, though my parents drove my sisters and me to St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest for elementary school. It gave me a unique perspective on the neighborhoods of Austin, Oak Park and River Forest.

When I was in high school at St. Ignatius, my family moved to Galewood, near Elmwood Park, so I’ve lived in or near Oak Park and River Forest almost all my life — except for a short stint in Wicker Park and in Iowa City while I attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. I moved to Forest Park 18 years ago.

A fiction writer by education and practice, I shifted focus, beginning a job as reporter for the Forest Park Review a year ago and contributing to Wednesday Journal as well, specifically on River Forest-related topics and events.

Is the sky the limit on Madison Street?

Agreeing with Elizabeth Loentz’s “One View” [Gunderson proposal should be rejected, Viewpoints, July 29] regarding the inappropriate proposed redevelopment plan for the property located at 435 Madison, I am confused about the inconsistencies of the Plan Commission with respect to previous decisions on proposed development, while certain of the probable action of the village board.

Earlier this year, the Plan Commission unanimously rejected the special-use application requested by the developer for an apartment building at that address. The Plan Commission based its decision on three factors: that the proposed building was too tall, too dense, and too close to Madison Street and the abutting single-family residences.

However, on Dec. 19, 2019 the Plan Commission unanimously approved a special-use application for the development of a senior living community apartment building less than three blocks down the street at 711-25 Madison. That building would/will be even taller, denser, and closer to the abutting single-family residences.

Like the proposal for 435 Madison, as noted by Ms. Loentz, the building at 711-25 Madison violates the Envision Oak Park plan of 2014, and the 2017 Zoning Ordinance. But the question is, how did the Plan Commission come to completely different decisions on the respective special-use applications?

What is certain is that the village board will disregard the concerns of the neighboring property owners and this time override the decision of the Plan Commission regarding the proposed development of 435 Madison. For better, or in these cases worse, the village board is consistent in making the sky the limit on Madison Street.

The 19th Amendment Forever!

Every year, the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) receives hundreds of requests for the issuance of new stamps. Topics remain under consideration until the CSAC reviews the proposals, assigns them to a program year, and then makes subject and design recommendations to the Postmaster General. The League of Women Voters, along with other organizations and friends, requested a commemorative stamp honoring the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

I am pleased to announce that the Forever commemorative stamp honoring the 19th Amendment will be issued on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020.

A quick civics lesson: To ratify an amendment to the United States Constitution after passage by both houses of Congress, twothirds of states’ support is needed. For the 19th Amendment (also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment), Illinois was the first state to ratify on June 10, 1919. Exactly 100 years ago, on Aug. 18, 1920, the Tennessee House of Representatives approved the amendment by one vote. Tennessee was the

36th state, the required number to reach two-thirds at the time, and the constitutional amendment passed.

Under President Woodrow Wilson, the 19th Amendment was officially signed by the Federal Secretary of State, Bainbridge Colby, and entered the U.S. Constitution on Aug. 26, 1920.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in full: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

To be clear, the right to vote was not “given” to women, as the fight for women’s suffrage spanned many generations. Therefore, do not take your right to vote for granted. Please be sure to register to vote, educate yourself on the issues and the candidates, and exercise your right by voting.

It will be wonderful to see these stamps on any and all correspondence. Thank you for supporting the United States Postal Service.

A beautiful COVID day in Oak Park It’s April and the virus is new.

Spring is here, heralded by a greeting from our oaks, elms, and maples, as leaves canvas exposed limbs, and become home to the neighborhood wildlife.

Birds sing and squirrels chatter searching for food and mates.

I run at dawn before the sun’s rays heat the pavement.

Strange, jogging in the middle of the street and not dodging cars.

The few people venturing out, are at the McDonald’s and Dunkin drive-thrus.

Pandemic or not, coffee, donuts and egg sandwiches are essential as are the cooks, bakers, and servers.

The sky is clear and quiet. No distant roar of the jets. No contrails.

Later I sit on the swing in front of my house.

An old man, with an older dog, walks by.

“Beautiful day,” I say. He nods, as does his dog.

I wave at an Amazon delivery man and enjoy the rays.

The sun feels good on my skin, finally exposed after a long winter.

An adult herds two children. All wear masks.

I wonder what the kids understand.

Police sirens in the distance.

Accident on the highway or something else?

A couple walk by holding hands, enjoying the spring warmth.

Almost makes the day seem normal.

But what is normal?

When will our lives return to normal?

What will normal be?

Maybe in a few months, we’ll know.

Charles Sayre, 97

Longtime dentist, avid tennis player Dr. Charles Morgan Sayre, DDS, 97, died peacefully on Aug. 4, 2020. The son of Florence and Dr. Loren Sayre, DDS, of Oak Park, he graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School where he lettered in football, tennis and track and was proud to be an Eagle Scout. He attended Northwestern University and the Northwestern University Dental School where he met the love of his life, Ruth Ella Evans, on the steps of the Tech Building CHARLES SAYRE where they shared a chemistry class.

They married after graduation and their honeymoon was a train trip to Officer Training School with the U.S. Army in San Antonio, Texas.

After his service as a captain during World War II, the young couple settled in Oak Park in a house across the street from his boyhood home. Their five children soon filled that home. They then moved to River Forest and lived in the same home for over 50 years when he lost Ruth after 55 years of marriage.

He treasured his family time and he thrived on helping others and volunteered with many community organizations. He dedicated much of his business life to dentistry in both his Chicago office in the Marshall Field Annex for over 50 years and as a professor at the Loyola University School of Dentistry. He said he never worked a day in his life, just spent the days in the dental office with his good friends every day. Many of his patients included some of the most prominent names in Chicago and leaders of national corporations. He was honored to have many of them as patients for over 40 years.

While the children were growing, the family spent most weekends on their boat, Karylonda, on Lake Michigan almost always entertaining family friends. After joining the River Forest Tennis Club in the 1960s, he showed a very competitive spirit and could usually be found there every day after office hours. He

O B I T U A R I E S played tennis well into his late 80s and was a founding member of the Tennis and Fitness Centre in Oak Park. He was an avid SCUBA diver and an accomplished water skier and was a member of the Oak Park Club and the Oak Park Country Club.

First Presbyterian Church of Oak Park and then First Presbyterian Church of River Forest played major roles in his life as a deacon and elder for many years. As the years passed and the family grew, his family shared time together in Lake Geneva during the summer and Ft. Lauderdale and Stuart, Florida in the winters.

Chuck Sayre was the father of Ronda (Steve) Satkamp and their children, Shannan (Steve) Bishop, Amy (Keg) Avakian, the late Katie Suzanne Satkamp, Mandy Wichman and Lissa (Adam) Blake; Cheryl (Walter) Collins and their children, Carrie (Chad) Cooper, Abbie (Vic) Zulim, and Cray Buresh; the late Marla Roxanne Sayre; Harlan Sayre and his children, Zachary and Matthew Sayre; and Kimm (Judy) Sayre and their children, Meredith, Mallorie and Morgan Sayre; 14 great-grandchildren, Ellie, Chloe and Madison Bishop, KJ, Michael and Suzy Avakian, Charlie and Jack Wichman, Lucie and Emerson Blake, Cailyn and Caycee Cooper, and Joey and Connor Zulim. He was predeceased by Ruth Ella Evans Sayre, his wife of 55 years; his daughter, Marla Roxanne Sayre; his granddaughter Katie Suzanne Satkamp; his sister, Lois Mildred Sayre Rainer; and his brother, Loren Don Sayre.

He will rest at Mount Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst alongside his wife.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to his favorite nonprofit charity, Safety Village of Hinsdale, 6230 Cove Creek Court, Burr Ridge, IL 60527, in which he was deeply involved for over 35 years with his whole family.

School class of 1956 and St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame, class of 1960, in addition to raising a large family, she served as an on-call chaplain at West Suburban Hospital for 14 years. She and her husband Paul were founding members of the St. Giles Family Mass community. Most of all, she enjoyed her time with her family and friends, whether in Oak Park, or on the beach while at her beloved home in Palisades Park in Covert, Michigan, where she was a longtime summer, and later year-round, resident.

Nancy Schlacks is survived by H. Paul Schlacks, her NANCY SCHLACKS husband of 58 years; her children, Erin (Tony) Evans, Howard “Howie” (Meegan), Julie (Chris) Schlacks-Duff, Peter and Andrew Schlacks; her grandchildren, Liam Campbell, Emily, Sarah, Maggie and Nora Schlacks, Charlie Duff, and Lucy Schlacks; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Joseph Madigan, and siblings Bette (the late Eugene) Morris and Joseph “J.D.” (the late Carol) Madigan Jr. Due to COVID-19 concerns, a memorial Mass is being planned for, and will be announced at, a later date. Private interment will take place in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Milda E. Padleckas (nee Kaspars), 92, a 26-year resident of River Forest and a former 30-yearplus resident of Oak Park, died on Aug. 7, 2020. Born on June 3, 1928, she was the wife of the late Val Padleckas; the moth-

er of Edmund (Mary Catherine) Padleckas; the grandmother of Craig, Matthew, and the late Marc; the sister of Richard (Ester) Kaspars, Zigfrids Kaspars, and Val (Ariel) Kaspars; and the aunt of many.

A visitation was held Aug. 11at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home. Interment was private. Flowers or donations to the Salvation Army are appreciated.

Rev. Jay Deacon, 75 Former minister, Unity Temple

Rev. Dr. F. Jay Deacon, 75, died at home in Forrest Park in western Massachusetts in late July.

Rev. Deacon served as minister of Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation from 1993-2002.

The congregation REV. JAY DEACON was named the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Park when he began. Before the end of his first year, he had overseen consolidation with Beacon Unitarian Church which created Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

He led UTUUC through the challenges that come when two congregations come together, and under his leadership the congregation creatively dealt with the conflicts and prepared the congregation for significant growth.

Known for his inspiring sermons, Rev. Deacon was a gentle soul who touched many hearts and minds. One of his memorable quotes was, “It is not given us to live lives of undisrupted calm, boredom, and mediocrity.

It is given us to be edge-dwellers.”

He will be dearly missed.

A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. for the UTUUC community and all who wish to participate.

Affordable housing and River Forest Proponents of expanding access say the village isn’t doing enough

n June, facing a state deadline of June 28, the River Forest Board of Trustees voted to approve an affordable housing plan for the village. Illinois required all towns with fewer than 10 percent affordable housing to file plans for how they would reach the goal of 10 percent affordable housing.

Affordable housing is defined as housing costs that are no more than 30 percent of gross income. Households spending more than 30 percent are considered housing cost-burdened.

Lawyer Dan Lauber, a local resident who has worked on fair housing issues since 1985 and is a vocal proponent of more affordable housing, has followed the debate in River Forest while advocating for more affordable housing.

River Forest’s affordable housing share is currently 9 percent. Lauber contends that while public support for more robust affordable housing measures in River Forest is strong, the board’s current plan is not strong enough. He details his opposition at the website www.riverforestmatters.com.

Chief among Lauber’s concerns is that in drafting the affordable housing plan for the village’s Plan Commission, consultant John Houseal lifted large portions of the affordable housing plan from a plan previously adopted by the village of Wilmette.

Lauber says the Wilmette ordinance was so poorly received that it was removed three years later. Lauber also said that there were a number of amendments proposed

that would make River Forest’s affordable housing plan more impactful, but they were not adopted.

A few of the recommendations Lauber has made include adopting incentivized inclusionary zoning, adopting a policy that at least 15 percent of units in new multifamily developments be affordable, ensuring that in TIF districts existing affordable housing be maintained or replaced with affordable housing in new developments on a one-for-one basis, and establishing a goal of at least 10 percent affordable housing as opposed to a capping affordable housing units at 10 percent of village housing stock.

Lauber, who has worked with municipalities across the nation on affordable housing, says that the data shows ADUs are not a viable affordable housing solution.

“It’s not going to result in a burst of activity,” he said. “It’s mostly relatives who move in. It won’t expand the affordable housing supply or effect diversity. It’s a small tool.”

For Lauber, the most effective tool is mandatory inclusionary zoning, and he notes that over 900 cities have adopted the model.

Another tool that he thinks could work in River Forest is converting existing apartments into low-equity co-ops.

He expressed frustration that of all the public letters and comments sent to the board in advance of the adoption of the plan, all but one resident spoke in favor of affordable housing, but this support didn’t seem to sway the board.

“It’s so cool to me that we’re saying yes to affordable housing in our backyard,” Lauber said. “But, the majority of the village board and planning commission were saying maybe.”

Phyllis Rubin is one of those residents who wrote to trustees and made a public comment supporting a strong affordable housing plan. She said that many object to affordable housing because they think it

will bring down property values, but she says that’s not true.

“Affordable housing in neighborhoods like River Forest doesn’t decrease property values and can even increase property values,” she said.

She cites the success Highland Park has had with their inclusionary housing plan and advocates for a similar plan.

“We should look at all of the research, integrate the affordable housing into the community so it’s done well, and it will be fine,” Rubin said. “We should look at people who’ve done it well and take our advice from them.”

River Forest resident Megan Keskitalo also spoke in favor of a stronger plan. She said that as an anthropologist, equity issues are part of her training.

“Top of my mind is equity,” Keskitalo said.

“One of the most important components of equity is who gets to live here?”

She says Patty Henek that the village should use outside experts to help determine the best path forward and that zoning changes should be

made to make sure developers aren’t awarded variances without including affordable housing units in their projects.

Keskitalo would also welcome more research into the numbers of houseCathy Adduci holds in River Forest that are housing cost-burdened. Keskitalo is hopeful that in implementing the plan going forward, the village will continue to look to experts and data to shape future decisions.

Village Trustee Patty Henek, who recently announced she’s running for village president in the 2021 election, expressed frustration with the process as well as the outcome.

She along with trustees Katie Brennan and Erika Bachner voted against the plan adopted at the June 8 meeting. President Cathy Adduci joined Respicio Vazquez, Tom Cargie and Bob O’Connell in voting to adopt the plan as presented.

Henek said she worries the process was rushed and does not reflect the current environment in the village. She said that at least 60 residents emailed asking for a stronger plan, and says that essentially adopting an old plan used by Wilmette does not make sense.

“Even if our direction on affordable housing was different months ago, it’s clear at this point in time and in this climate, we had to do something different,” Henek said.

Noting the timing of the recent protests demanding an end to institutional racism across the country and in Chicago, Henek said, “It’s time to put actions to words. We’re all learning, but to ensure we have a better plan, that means everyone staying on top of next steps and paying attention.”

Adduci, who is running for a third term as president, says that the approved plan involves six steps, and that village staff will be tasked with crafting ordinances and policies to put the plan into place.

Those six steps include recommendations that the board allow taller and denser developments in commercial and mixeduse areas; explore strategies and means to preserve and enhance existing affordable housing; amend zoning ordinance to allow ADUs; explore zoning ordinances so that the village can support integrative supportive housing; amend plan development standards so affordable housing is one of the standards developers have to go through; and take eligible TIF funds and allow them to be used for affordable housing.

Adduci stressed that the process is not over and will take time to flesh out.

“It’s not a switch, it’s a process. It’s a journey,” Adduci said. “The hope is that in the next one to two years, we have a significant affordable housing plan that will get us past the 10 percent goal. You have to start somewhere.”

Friday, August 21 â&#x20AC;˘ 10am Gen Silent asks six LGBT seniors if they will hide their lives to survive. They put a face on what experts in the film call an epidemic: gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender seniors so afraid of discrimination, or worse, in long-term/health care that many go back into the closet. And, their decisions are captured through intimate access to their day-to-day lives over the course of a year in Boston, Massachusetts. The film shows the wide range in quality of paid caregivers --from those who are specifically trained to make LGBT seniors feel safe, to the other end of the spectrum, where LGBT elders face discrimination, neglect or abuse. As the film chronicles the challenges that these men and women face, each subject crosses paths with a small but growing group of impassioned professionals trying to wake up the long-term and healthcare industries to their plight.
