A private firm has launched a second investigation of a fatal car crash that took the life of a Maywood woman on Father’s Day earlier this year, but the woman’s family is still frustrated with how the first investigation, conducted by the Maywood Police Department, went.

The initiative essentially denies people seeking asylum entry into the United States, forcing them to wait in Mexico, Ruiz-Velasco said.

“Before this program began, asylum seekers who presented themselves at the border would be detained and processed for deportation proceedings,” Ruiz-Velasco said. “A lot of them were released to other family members in the United States while they waited for court, which gave them the opportunity to find a lawyer to represent them.”

As a result, encampments crowded with migrants have popped up along the southern border, where children and adults are forced to bathe in the Rio Grande River, and where kidnapping and extortion are regular occurrences, RuizVelasco said.

Ruiz-Velasco and others said people should demand that the federal government end the Migrant Protection Protocols program while Williams said that people can also donate to organizations like the Hope Border Institute, an independent Catholic research and policy organization that partnered with the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership on the El Paso trip.

“This program didn’t exist before,” said Ruiz-Velasco. “So we’re calling for our members of Congress in Illinois to vote no on this program during this upcoming vote on the federal budget, to ensure there are no funds from the federal government used to support this program.”

A group of activists, community members and faith-based leaders who represent businesses and organizations in Proviso Township and beyond recently traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border to witness what many who were interviewed about their respective trips described as human rights atrocities.

Anthony Williams, the co-owner of Meal of the Day Cafe in Maywood, said he was stunned by what he saw earlier this month at the Mexican border near El Paso, Texas, where human beings have been forced to live behind barbed wired tents. The sight, Williams, said “was unbelievable.” Williams, along with restaurant co-owner Byron Diggs, were among a contingent of concerned Catholics who traveled to the border on Oct. 11 through Oct. 13.

“To see all of that money being spent on additional fencing doesn’t make any sense,” Williams said.

“Not for a country that’s freedom-loving.”

“We felt that there’s something profoundly important right now about the need for Latinx Catholics, in particular, to be on the front lines of leadership on these particular issues of migration, of border militarization, of the separation of families, of the mass deportation of immigrants in our country,” Michael Okinczyc-Cruz, executive director of the Maywood-based Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership, told Religion News Service.

“People are being forced into really dangerous conditions,” said Moni Ruiz-Velasco, the executive director of Melrose Park-based PASO West Suburban Action Group, an immigrant rights organization.

Ruiz-Velasco traveled with a group of lawmakers, activists, clergy and journalists to the Mexican city of Matamoros last week.

“That part of Mexico is designated by the U.S. State Department as presenting the same level of risk and violence as Afghanistan and Syria, because of the murders and kidnappings,” said RuizVelasco. “In that area, people have no running water and no shelter. The only food they have is what is brought across the border from the U.S. side by volunteers.”

On walks to Maywood school, conflicts down, caring up Officials say D89’s new Smart Routes program at Irving has made students’ walks to, from school safer

One morning during this school year, an adult male driving a van near Irving Middle School 805 S. 17th Ave. in Maywood, tried luring who he thought was a 13-yearold into his vehicle. The teenager turned out to a 23-year-old employee of a program hatched and implemented by parents and community organizations in order to avoid just this scenario.

“The worker radioed me, I called the police and they ended up catching him on 23rd and St. Charles,” said Antonette Dorris, the program director for Smart Routes to School — a pilot initiative that launched during the 2019-20 school year. “When all of that happened, we executed what we had been trained to do, but when I got home and my coworker told me, ‘Do you realize what happened today?’ I just lost it. That really could’ve been a 13-year-old girl.”

Testimonies to the success of the Smart Routes to School program have been piling up ever since the program was launched in the fall, District 89 officials and community members have said.

The program is the brainchild of District 89 parents who sit on the Safety and Violence Prevention Committee, an offshoot of the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership — a faith-based social justice nonprofit based in Maywood.

In a letter presented to the Maywood Board of Trustees in March, Marche Williams, a parent of two young boys in D89 and the chairman of the committee, said that he and other parents, young people and other community members met throughout the year to talk about issues that concern them.

“We have listened to hundreds of local parents and residents, and what we have heard is that a program that would place community-rooted adults on the streets to help ensure that students can safely walk to and from school in the mornings or afternoons would be a tremendous addition to the Maywood community,” Williams

The committee drafted a budget $118,000 that called for the creation of Dorris’s fulltime position, along with eight part-time route workers who would be positioned at four smart passage routes along major streets near Irving — including Washington Boulevard, Madison Street and St. Charles Road. The village of Maywood, Proviso Township and District 89 each contributed $40,000 — money that, so far, seems to have been well-spent.

“We’ve stopped several fights,” said Dorris during a prayer walk she hosted on Oct. 19 in Maywood along the smart routes she’s responsible for managing. The event was also sponsored by Broadview Baptist Church and the Maywood Park District.

“It’s not like fights happen every day, but the ones that used to happen on Fridays — we’ve stopped that,” she said. “There were also quite a few individuals on 17th who were loitering while our children walked to and from school. They’ve since become respectful of those hours we’re out here.”

Irving Principal Keith Mahone, who was hired earlier this year to replace former principal Michelle Hassan, said that he’s also seen the benefits of the Smart Routes program.

“Infractions after school have gone down tremendously as a result of the families who walk out students home and communicate with them,” he said during the prayer walk.

“I’ve seen a difference in students’ behavior and their sense of security. Before, you’d get more parents calling w with issues on this block and that one. Now, there’s a much more positive energy. Students can interact with adults as they’re walking home. There’s that support now. Our data shows it from a climate and culture standpoint.”

During an interview in July, Maria Hernandez-Franco, another D89 parent who sits on the Safety and Violence Prevention Committee, said that new program would give her some peace of mind and a stronger sense of empowerment.

Other organizational details, she said, will be filled in once a board is installed.

Meanwhile membership rates have been set, the mayor added. A standard membership costs $200 and includes an invitation to BBA events, a BBA newsletter subscription, a business listing in the annual printed BBA Directory and other perks.

There’s an option for monthly payments.

There’s a $50 discount for nonprofit memberships, Thompson said.

“We don’t want to have social or networking events that are not meaningful to you,” Thompson said. “We’re going to have events that can impact your business.”

“Before, there were issues with bullying, fights, lack of supervision, kids being dropped off at 7 a.m. and nobody’s out there,” Hernandez-Franco said. “That’s how the idea was born. We had listening sessions and Irving students told us what was happening at the school. They were unsafe. That’s where we took it from and developed it from there. Now, the teachers feel supported. The police feel supported. We’re all working together. Plus, it gives community members the opportunity to be involved.”

Dorris said that each Smart Routes worker is trained extensively by area police and fire departments. She said that she extensively documents various data points, such as incidents, on a laptop in her car and shares the data with Mahone and Carmen Rivera, the Maywood Police Department’s community resource liaison.

That information, Dorris said, has helped with prevent conflicts.

Williams said that the Smart Routes program materialized because the parents were organized and disciplined about what they wanted. In addition to working with CSPL, the parents also worked with Proviso Partners for Health, an alliance of

association with the village government, which can leverage its capacity to help small businesses attract much-needed capital and other resources. For example, Thompson referenced Visit Oak Park, which despite its name is the state tourism bureau that represents all of Cook County.

“Our approach is a regional approach to tourism,” said Eric C. Wagner, Visit Oak Park’s president and CEO. “People are traveling because they want to go to local gems, so what I’m trying to do is make sure that, when people are coming to our attractions, they’re also experiencing what local communities have to offer.”

Wagner said that a recent Visit Oak Park guide features “key local gems” in

organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life in Proviso Township.

“This program was obviously needed,” he said. “I think by having the committee, the district saw us as an organized group.

We had a list of ideas. We were pushing them, but we weren’t pressuring them to do something they didn’t want to do. If we didn’t have this group, I don’t think the idea would have gotten as far as it did.”

During the Oct. 19 walk, Regina Rivers, a D89 board member and the youth services director for Proviso Township, said that the parents’ message resonated with the board.

“They spoke up about a situation that was a concern to them,” Rivers said. “Those parents brought their concerns to three entities and they met over the course of a year and developed Smart Routes.”

“Continue to speak up, say something and get involved in the school,” said Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins during Saturday’s prayer walk.

Rivers said that the program was based on Chicago Public Schools’ Safe Routes initiative. The name Smart Routes, however, was intentionally selected to avoid any negative connotations that Safe Routes may prompt, such as the notion that walking to school was completely unsafe before.

“This is about us all being smart in how we go through this endeavor,” Rivers said.

“Once we begin to think that way, it will expand beyond the hours of going to school.

It will become part of our everyday life and that’s what we the school district want for our residents. We want our community to feel that they’re safe and to love living here.”

This year, the Smart Routes program was piloted at Irving Middle School.

District 89 officials have said that, based on its effectiveness, the program could be expanded to more schools in the district in the years to come.

“This is a huge step for Maywood,” said Mahone. “Hopefully, we’ll extend it to other communities throughout the suburbs.”

On June 27, Johnson’s sister, Paul Ali, filed a lawsuit against the driver of the car, Edward N. Owens. The village of Maywood was listed as a defendant in the lawsuit, but only for discovery purposes.

The lawsuit claims that Owens “carelessly and negligently” failed to properly signal; failed to “stop the automobile in time to avoid coming into contact with the aforesaid oncoming vehicle”; turned left in front of the oncoming vehicle without properly yielding to it; failed to “keep a safe and proper lookout”; and failed to reduce his speed to avoid hitting the other car, among other claims.

Maywood Police said that the other car was allegedly a stolen vehicle out of Naperville that contained a group of juveniles. When the car was spotted by a Maywood officer, who noticed they had committed a traffic violation, the officer activated the squad car lights and “the kids took off,” Talley said in June. Police later detained two juveniles, who were eventually released. They so far haven’t been charged with anything, Talley said.

During the interview this month, Talley said that the Maywood Police Department conducted its own internal investigation into the crash, but he nonetheless asked the village board to bring in the private contractor.

“I don’t want to give the hint of impropriety,” Talley said, adding that Maywood Police have concluded its own investigation, but the department will not share the results of that inquiry with the public until the private contractor is finished with its work.

During a regular meeting on Sept. 3, the Maywood Board of Trustees voted unanimously to hire LWM Research, Inc., a private investigative firm based in Huntley — but not without reservations.

Most board members were concerned about the open-endedness of the firm’s investigation. Two people with LWM will be assigned to the investigation at $125 an hour.

“For eight hours, that’s a thousand dollars a day for each man, and for five days that’s $10,000,” said Trustee Melvin Lightford during the meeting.

The board eventually voted to require

the firm to update the village on the progress of the investigation after every 40 hours’ worth of work.

Lightford had stepped out of the room during the roll call on the motion, so missed the chance to vote.

During an interview earlier this year, Ali said that she and her family had grown frustrated with the progress of Maywood’s investigation into the crash and that officers had given her information that may have been wrong.

“They said that the state police and the sheriff were investigating,” Ali said at the time. “They told my dad to get a copy of the police report from the state police. They said there would be an accident reconstruction.”

Talley has since said that the sheriff and the state police were not involved in the investigation. He said that he called for the independent investigation to guarantee transparency.

“My job as a police chief is to make sure the village is protected, period,” said Talley, when asked about some of Ali’s concerns.

Ali was also frustrated by the fact that no charges had been filed against the juveniles who were allegedly driving the stolen car that collided with the car Johnson was traveling in. She contrasted her sister’s case with a similar case in Lake County, where five teenagers in a stolen car were immediately arrested and charged after a police chase earlier this year.

“Cook County operates totally differently from other counties around the state,” Talley said. “How they handle jurisprudence is left up to the state’s attorney’s office. What we’re doing and what the state’s attorney is doing is following the process and it may not work as quickly as another incident. While the incidents may be similar, they’re not the same.”

Ali said that she filed the lawsuit to ensure that the full truth about Johnson’s death comes to light.

“Ruthie was well liked and deeply loved,” Ali said. “She was doing so much we didn’t even know about. She wasn’t even working, she had a disability, but she gave a homeless person her last $20. She loved Maywood. She wasn’t just anybody. For them to treat this case like she was just another person — it’s upsetting.”

“Our sympathy goes out to that family and we’re working as diligently as we can, but it’s a process and we have to follow that process,” said Talley.

Maywood homes less blighted as new ones go up, officials say Manager touts more than $400K in grants for cleaning up abandoned homes, increasing volume of building permits

During a town hall held Oct. 24 at the village’s Council Chambers, 125 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, village officials said that Maywood is making progress in the area of housing. They pointed to more than $400,000 in grant funding for maintaining abandoned residential properties and fresh interest from developers in building new homes in town.

Norfleet said that, for the last four years, the village has secured three state grants to maintain or demolish abandoned residential properties in the village. The Abandoned Residential Property Municipality Relief Program funds a variety of activities related to abandoned properties — from demolition to hauling out debris and fly-dumped

materials to cutting weeds around the homes.

Norfleet said that the village contracts with private firms for the services. This fiscal year, he said, roughly 34 abandoned homes in the village have been serviced through those grant funds.

The first grant was for roughly $75,000, the second grant was for around $118,000 and the most recent grant, awarded roughly four months ago, was for around $250,000, Norfleet said, adding that the village has not always spent all of the money from each grant it has received. The grants are viable for up to two years, the manager said.

“The grants go to any abandoned location, provided it’s residential and we don’t file a lien against the property owner,” Norfleet said, adding that residents should contact his office if they see any properties that might appear eligible for the servicing under the terms of the grants.

Norfleet also announced during the town hall meeting that the village has identified a dozen more properties slated for fast track demolition. The Board of Trustees approved the last round of fast track demolition in 2016. The fast track demolition process allows municipalities to bypass the courts and demolish properties, no higher than three stories, that are “open and vacant and determined by the Village to be continuing

hazard to the community,” according to a memo drafted by the village’s law firm, Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins, a few years ago.

In another mark of progress on the housing front, Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins told attendees at the Oct. 24 town hall that the village recently received notice from IFF Chicago, a nonprofit developer, that the organization intends to purchase 12 more empty lots on which to build affordable housing for veterans and disabled residents.

IFF has already helped develop four threeunit buildings in Maywood that are close to completion and that are designed for lowincome veterans and disabled residents. The homes are located at 1902, 2009, 2024 and 2032 South 5th Avenue.

In addition, Norfleet explained, the village has sold 12 lots through its Vacant to Valued program, an initiative created in 2017 that allows developers to buy bundles of vacant land owned by the village for low prices in order to spur new construction and get the lots back on the tax roll. New construction has already started on three of those properties, he said.

“In fact, we have some pretty good indicators to say things are getting developed in Maywood, such as the annual growth in the volume of building permits,” Norfleet said.

The revenue generated from issuing building permits was $245,327 in fiscal year 2015, $252,882 in fiscal year 2016, $398,004 in fiscal year 2017, $370,744 in fiscal year 2018, $388,979 in fiscal year 2019 and $317,361 so far in fiscal year 2020, according to village data.

There’s still roughly six months to go in the village’s 2020 fiscal year.

“We might be on pace for a record year for building permits in the last five years, if not longer,” Norfleet said. “The total right now is almost the annual total of all of last fiscal year. This proves that people are making an investment in Maywood.”

Norfleet said that other indicators, such as the volume of transfer stamps (people pay village fees for these during the sale of property) also reflect a rush of housing activity.

The revenue generated from issuing transfer stamps was $128,237 in fiscal year 2015, $113,068 in fiscal year 2016, $130,889 in fiscal year 2017, $189,588 in fiscal year 2018, $258,386 in fiscal year 2019 and $186,739 so far in fiscal year 2020, village data shows.

Norfleet said that the numbers “are giving me a great indication that investments are being made in the residential area, which is where we’ve suffered the most. That’s really where we’re having our difficulty — not commercial or industrial.”

In data provided by the village, Maywood’s equalized assessed valuation — the total taxable value of property in addition to a state equalization formula that’s designed to bring local property tax rates in line with tax rates across the state — for all

residential properties in the village dropped by roughly a third. The residential property EAV in Maywood was $219.5 million in 2010 while in 2018 it was $154 million. Meanwhile, commercial EAV in Maywood doubled from 2010 to 2018, going from $14 million to $30 million. Industrial EAV dropped 46 percent from 2010 to 2018, going from $37 million to $20 million during that time span.

Proviso East football team disqualified from playoffs IHSA says the team had two ineligible players, must forfeit four games

The Proviso East High School football team – which appeared to have made the state playoffs for the first time in roughly a decade after beating intradistrict rival Proviso West last week to notch its sixth win — has been disqualified from competing in the Illinois High School Association playoffs, according to a letter IHSA officials sent District 209 officials Wednesday afternoon.

“The ruling is that there were two students who were in violation of IHSA bylaws,” said Cynthia Moreno, D209’s communications director.

“One student’s residency cannot be

verified and the other student was ineligible to play due to being beyond the eight consecutive semesters allowed for students to participate in IHSA activities,” Moreno said. She declined to identify the students.

In the letter, IHSA officials said that, based on the information they found, East is required to forfeit its wins against North Chicago, Addison Trail, Leyden and Morton Grove.

On Friday, the Pirates beat Proviso West 148, which would have qualified the program for its first playoff appearance since 2008. The Pirates also made the playoffs in 1998.

In a statement released on behalf of District 209 on Wednesday, Moreno said that the D209 administration became aware of the

IHSA violations after Proviso East Athletic Director Brian Colbert “self-reported the

inconsistency to the IHSA.” “The school is now aware of the ruling and is complying with all requests by the IHSA,” Moreno said. “Additionally, we are undergoing an internal investigation to ensure that as we move forward our athletic programs are in full compliance. We sincerely apologize for this unfortunate situation. Our priority right now is to work with our student athletes during this difficult time as we continue to be prouder of the grit and determination all football players displayed on the football field this season.”

Maywood artist’s art speaks for itself The subjects in Jesse Howard’s work, on exhibition at Robert Morris College until Oct. 31, tell stories on their own terms

Reality often has a way of making it onto Jesse Howard’s canvas. The Maywood artist is well-known for his gripping charcoal drawings that capture African Americans suspended in various degrees of raw marginality — during a protest, under arrest, navigating homelessness.

The backstory of one of Howard’s works of art, which he calls “The Emerging Black Male or Not,” has its origins at the Starbucks at 711 Lake St. in Oak Park, where Howard can often be seen reading a newspaper.

“I got this guy out of Starbucks,” Howard said, referencing the artwork’s subject, during a reception on Oct. 3 at the State Street Gallery on the campus of Robert Morris College, 401 S. State St. in Chicago, where the artist’s work is on exhibit throughout October.

“He’s only 26 years old and he was getting ready to go to a shelter,” Howard said. “They hang out at the Starbucks until 7 p.m.,

Howard said the artwork is a faithful illustration of the man’s eccentric hairstyle.

“You can see he diminishes, but yet he comes forward,” Howard explained. “The panels are what you see a lot in AfricanAmerican homes. Those tiles? I wanted to put that in his face. I wanted him to be so much faded into this blackness that you ask the question …”

In another work of art, the uninhibited voices of Proviso

East High School students — unfiltered, irreverent, crude, crying and acting out, painfully honest — scream in scrawled words on canvas that appears to bleed with raw emotion. Without explicitly drawing the scene, Howard brings you into the inner worlds of the high school in all of its messy, complicated reality.

“Marcia LaPorte [the chairperson of East’s Fine Arts & World Languages Department] had me come into the cafeteria and then do a lecture and then she invited me to one of their shows,” Howard said. “You have to get the kids’ trust. Once I got their trust, they opened up and they just started writing.”

And what was one of the first words the students wrote?

“Help,” Howard said.

Howard’s exhibition, “The Love & Hate of a Culture in Defiance,” will be displayed at State Street Galley until Oct. 31.

Developer looking to bring new restaurant to Bellwood Dino Vulpitta wants to develop New Orleans-style eatery on Mannheim Road

Dino Vulpitta is looking to bring some New Orleans flavor to Bellwood. According to Peter Tsiolis, Bellwood’s community development director, Vulpitta wants to open a restaurant at 243 Mannheim Road that specializes in New Orleans-style food.

The proposed establishment was originally supposed to be named Moulin Rouge, but after concerns from residents and members of the village’s Plan Commission, the restaurant will be called the Big Easy. Nonprofit with Melrose Park office seeking feedback Youth Outreach Services is holding Nov. 11 open house for residents to meet staff, offer service recommendations

Youth Outreach Services, a Chicago-based nonprofit with offices in the city’s Austin community and at 4419 W. North Ave. in Melrose Park, has been reaching out to residents in its service area to get their feedback on how the organization can better service them.

This fall, the organization has hosted three open houses, including one on Oct. 15 at its Melrose Park facility. It also plans to hold one on Nov. 11 at its Austin office, 5910 W. Division St. Jamie Noto, who became the nonprofit’s executive director this summer, said that she wants to give residents a chance to see what Youth Outreach Services does and to give their insights on what kind of community services they’d like to see from the nonprofit.

Noto said that the organization changes its programming in response to the community’s needs and open houses are a great opportunity to find out what those needs are.

“We try to be responsive to the community and try to offer services where we see the trends,” Noto said. “So, periodically, we like to do open houses so the community can

come in, learn about what we do and meet the staff.”

According to its website, YOS helps teens “that face challenges at home, in school and in the community” reach their full potential. The organization offers a wide range of counseling services for the teens and their families; crisis intervention programs; prevention programs that tackle substance abuse, teen MICHAEL ROMAIN pregnancy and bullying; and REACHING OUT: Workers at Youth Outreach Services’ youth summer jobs program.

The program also provides Melrose Park offices. a range of programs designed to keep young people from going to prison school or not in school,” she said.

At the moment, Noto said, they offer or juvenile detention, such as restorative justice initiatives and alternatives to services in five schools in the suburbs and five schools in Chicago. They also get detention.

Recently, the organization launched referrals from community organizations therapy programs for teens who have and from schools.

Youth Outreach Services once had a Maywood office, which closed during the Rauner administration. But Noto explained that the closure had less to do with the shortage of funds than the fact that Ceasefire, the violence prevention program housed in the nonprofit’s Maywood offices, kept suspending operations while dealing with its own funding issues.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration has brought welcome stability, Noto said.

“Under the new administration, we have payments coming in on time and we had an increase in our funding,” she said.

On genocide, ‘The Mis-Education of the Negro’ and a Black-only book club

During its monthly youth breakfast, held Oct. 5 at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, members of Maywood Youth Mentoring hosted young participants in the Peace Builder Leadership Development Program — an initiative operated by the Peace Exchange, which is a leadership development program sponsored by several Chicago area organizations.

This summer, the peace builders, including Micah Baker, a 17-year-old senior at Proviso Math and Science Academy, traveled to Rwanda for two weeks as the country celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide — the 1994 calamity that involved members of one Rwandan tribe, the Hutus, massacring an estimated 800,000 people, most of them members of another Rwandan tribe, the Tutsis. All of it happened in the course of roughly 100 days.

Baker told the young people gathered during the Oct. 5 breakfast (the meal was prepared by students in Proviso East’s culinary program), that the trip posed a

number of questions.

“We learned a lot about the genocide, but our main purpose there was to learn about after the genocide,” she said. “So, how did a group of people in Rwanda split and how were they able to overcome the obstacles they faced during the genocide? How were they able to become the strong country they are today?”

Part of that reckoning was distilled by one young woman who was featured in a short film produced about the trip called “Amahoro.”

“For me to forgive someone, I’d need to see effort put in by the part of the perpetrators,” she said.

Answering the question of who and what perpetrated the genocide takes an act of deep truth-telling and historical awareness.

As historian Sean Ledwith has written, the genocide has been portrayed “by mainstream Western media and politicians as a manifestation of an allegedly peculiar form of African savagery that would be unthinkable in other parts of the world. New York Mayor, Ed Koch, was symptomatic of this thinly-veiled racist reaction. He characterised the genocide as tribal warfare

involving those without the veneer of Western civilization.”

The historical truth, however, is that Western civilization was implicated in the genocide through and through.

“Contrary to the ignorance of observers such as Koch, the ethnic demarcation of Hutus and Tutsis was not an irreconcilable fault line running through Rwandan culture and history,” Woodson writes.

The European imperial powers that controlled the country’s economic and political structures (first the Germans and then the Belgians), cynically exploited artificial divisions between the Tutsis and Hutus decades before the genocide, culminating in the introduction of a “mandatory ID card system that formalised the Hutu/Tutsi classification for the first time.”

In the preface of his influential book The Mis-Education of the Negro, Carter G. Woodson writes these oft-quoted words: “When you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his actions. You do not have to tell him not to stand here or go yonder. He will find his ‘proper place’ and will stay in it.”

Pointing out the role of white imperialism in the Rwandan genocide does not absolve the black Rwandans nor does it unduly victimize them; rather, the education is necessary for preventing another tragic demonstration of self-hatred and mental enslavement.

The lesson is everyone’s to learn, not in the least African Americans in the United States.

To that end, Maywood Youth Mentoring has formed a Black Books, Black Thoughts Book Club. They’ll be reading The MisEducation the Negro every Wednesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood. The discussion is facilitated by Nubian Malik.

In observation of the International Decade for People of African Descent, the book club is reserved for people of Afrikan/Black ancestry, ages 18 and older.

Sure, some may shun this club as reverseracism or self-segregation. I call it reading for survival.
