Adam Saracco, the ICE agent who was charged with misdemeanor battery for pushing lawyer and activist Robert Held to the ground in December 2025 at a gas station in Brookfield, has pleaded guilty.

Saracco was sentenced to one year of court supervision on one count of misdemeanor battery on Wednesday, Aug. 12, nearly eight months since the incident late last year where Held said Saracco pushed him to the ground after he followed him to the Shell gas station at the intersection of 31st Street and Maple Avenue from the federal immigrant detention center in Broadview.

Riverside has been dealing with increased traffic on its east side due to the closure of Harlem Avenue.

The major road has been closed at the BNSF railway crossing to allow for the completion of a “rehabilitation project,” according to Riverside’s website.

The closure began Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6 a.m. and will continue until Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 4 a.m., Public Safety Director Matthew Buckley said. The road was originally scheduled to reopen on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 6 a.m., but the closure was extended due to the weather, Buckley said.

In the meantime, traffic has been detoured around the closure, directing drivers to head west on Roosevelt Road and Ogden Avenue in order to head north or south along First Avenue. Riverside’s streets that connect to Harlem — Herrick Road, East Burlington Street, East Quincy Street, Lawton Road and Robinson Court — have been delegated for local traffic only, Buckley said.

“They’re not technically closed,” he told the Landmark. “There are signs up there that say, ‘Local traffic only,’ to alleviate the traffic in Riverside because our streets are not capable of handling the amount of traffic on Harlem Avenue.”

Residents who live on those streets are allowed to head east and turn onto Harlem heading away from the closure at the railway crossing, he added.

Buckley said the detour north of the closure was originally set to send drivers west on Cermak Road, but it was changed to Roosevelt Road due to construction on the bridge over the Des Plaines River between First Avenue and Des Plaines Avenue.

In the time since Harlem Avenue’s closure, Buckley said Riverside has seen increased vehicle traffic on those local-only streets from drivers ignoring the signs.

Berwyn technically can’t handle those trucks either, so that’s why they put those detours further out at Roosevelt and Ogden. Unfortunately, if a trucker decides he’s going to try to test it, then he’s probably going to get a ticket.”

He said officials have heard complaints from residents near Harlem Avenue who have struggled to break into traffic from their driveways and who then have to deal with delays as cars pile up at stop signs, for example.

“It’s not like it’s been a complete gridlock over there, but there have been additional delays as a result,” Buckley said.

“It seems to be during rush hour times for the most part.”

He said Riverside officials first heard about the plans for the closure about two weeks ahead of time from RoadSafe, the

BNSF line’s contracted traffic control firm.

Buckley acknowledged the difficulties residents have been facing since the closure began.

“Any time we have a major road that has to close for a period of time, it affects everybody. It’s a compounding factor. Our streets around here are busy enough, and then you add a closure to it, and it just makes it that much worse,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he said it’s a necessary evil that comes with necessary work.

“Unfortunately, this is another one of those projects that we call tearing the band-aid off and getting it done, ripping it off as quick as you can,” he said. “It’s probably the quickest, most efficient way to get it done, and then when it’s done, we’re in a much better place because we’ve got a new crossing there, and, hopefully, it will last for many, many years, and we won’t have to deal with this for a while.”

Riverside hosts summer’s final concert in the park

Residents took to Big Ball Park on Friday, Aug. 7, for free tunes

Riverside and area residents took to Big Ball Park earlier this month for the village’s third Concert in the Park, the last of the series this summer. The show, which was free to the public, featured Chicago-based rock band Fletcher Rockwell playing original songs and popular covers on Friday, Aug. 7.

Megan Siska, the assistant director of Riverside’s parks and recreation department, which is responsible for the Concerts in the Park, said the crowd was solidly sizeable.

“We had a really good crowd, a good turnout, which we always hope for that last concert,” she told the Landmark.

“It’s kind of the last thing before everybody ends summer and goes back to school.”

She said most of her time on concert days is taken up by coordinating the efforts to set the shows up.

“Usually, our stage arrives by around 1 o’clock. I meet them out there to angle them properly in the park,” Siska said. “Our sound and lighting company typically comes

later in the afternoon, around 3:30 or so, and they’ve got all of their equipment that they’ve got to unload. I put them in touch with the band prior to the concert … The band is able to come with just their instruments and get themselves set up.”

Despite the busy days, Siska said preparations for the series of three concerts — one at the start of each month of June, July and August — begin far earlier in the year.

“We usually secure our bands, our stage and our sound and lighting company right after the first of the year because there are obviously a lot of moving parts,” she said.

“There are some communities that may have a gazebo or a concert area where they don’t need to rent a stage or might be able to do some of that in-house, but being where we are, with the limited space that we’ve got, we have to put all those different pieces together.”

When looking for talent to entertain attendees, Siska said she and Ron Malchiodi, the director of Riverside’s parks and recreation department, do their best to vary the genres represented from concert to concert and year to year. Last year, for example, Riverside featured a country band, so this year, they opted not to include country, she said.

That’s actually how we found our June concert [headliner], Whiskey Misfits, who’s a local band,” she said. “Other times, we work with booking agencies that are in the area. I typically give them what our budget is, the type of genre that we’re looking for, and they’re able to get back to me with some options.”

While Siska said she couldn’t make it to the concert on Aug. 7, she said she’s attended many concerts in the park over her nine years with Riverside.

“My favorite part of the concert is really seeing so many people in the community come together. It’s obviously a nice way to enjoy a beautiful night out. I know from my experience in my personal life that it’s nice to be able to take some lawn chairs, pop

them out and be able to enjoy a concert,” she said.

“It’s free. You don’t have to plan anything.

You can come and go as you please,” Siska added. “This is local. It’s an easy thing for you to do if you have the time available to you. You get to see neighbors that maybe you don’t live right by. The other piece is you always see the kids out in the field.

They’re playing football. They’re enjoying their time. You’ve got this sense of community at these events that brings people together, which I love to see.”

Chicago driver caught speeding in residential Brookfield

Brookfield police ticketed a 37-year-old Chicago man on Aug. 5 for speeding.

Around 4 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a vehicle heading west on 31st Street at a speed of 47 mph against a posted speed limit of 30 mph. The officer made a U-turn in their squad car and followed the vehicle. The officer saw it turn right to head north on Maple Avenue, where it accelerated up to a maximum speed of 56 mph in the 30-mph zone.

The officer conducted a traffic stop, pulling the vehicle over near the bridge over Salt Creek and making contact with the driver of the vehicle, who said he had never been issued a driver’s license and that he did not have insurance on his vehicle.

The officer ran the vehicle’s license plate number and learned the plates belong to a different vehicle. The man admitted he had recently bought the car and illegally placed the license plates on it so he could drive it, according to police.

The officer issued citations to the man for aggravated speeding, driving without a valid license, operating an uninsured vehicle and improper use of vehicle registration. The officer had the car towed and set a Sept. 8 court date for the man before sending him on his way.

No rear license plate light Brookfield police on Aug. 7 ticketed a 33-year-old Berwyn woman.

Around 10:15 p.m., an officer witnessed

a black car that did not have a light to illuminate its rear license plate as required

by Illinois law. The officer activated their squad car’s emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop on the 8800 block of Ogden Avenue, where they made contact with the driver. She provided the officer with her driver’s license and proof of insurance, but when the officer ran her information through the police database, they learned the woman’s license had been suspended.

After being advised of the officer’s finding, the woman said she had been in a recent car crash in which her car was not insured, leading to citations. She told the officer she had paid all her court fees and now had insurance on her vehicle, but the officer said she would still be cited.

The officer charged the woman with driving on a suspended driver’s license and without a rear license plate light and set a Sept. 8 court date.

These items were obtained from the Brookfield Police Department reports dated Aug. 3-10; they represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated. We report the race of a suspect only when a serious crime has been committed, the suspect is still at large and police have provided us with a detailed physical description of the suspect as they seek the public’s help in making an arrest.

RBHS kicks off school year with new cellphone policy

Board of Ed also to vote in August about raising substitute teacher pay

July has been a long month for RiversideBrookfield High School Principal Dr. Hector Freytas, highlighted by efforts to educate students and their families on a new cellphone policy The school has hosted summer residency days July 8 and July 15, with another coming up Wednesday and the last a week later on July 29. Every family and their students must attend.

They’ll see the familiar face of Freytas at the main entrance, along with a board with dozens of pouches – for student cellphones.

The key message: During classes, phones must be in a pocket. It’s the pre-emptive move by District 208 ahead of the state’s mandate for the 2027-28 school year.

And they have been long days for Freytas. He’s stood up front from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

July 8 and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 15. He’ll do that same 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. shift Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 29. Long days if you’re wearing dress shoes.

But he’s not glum about it. Quite the contrary, though he has heard a few groans – from students, not their parents.

“We’re doing it together in residency, they are putting them in their cellphone pockets,” he said. “I believe that I am setting my students up for success and mitigating issues.

I care about my teachers and want them to focus on instruction.”

In past years, he said, the school used a “stoplight” system for cellphone usage in class. Teachers had the autonomy to decide when students could use their phones. For example, on a green day, students could use their phones. On a yellow day, students might only be able to use their phones at the beginning or end of class. Obviously, a red day meant no usage at all.

“It created some inconsistency from classroom to classroom,” Freytas said.

The intention of the new state mandate is to make sure every student is on the same page everywhere.

“On one hand, phones can be a tool for learning, and on the other hand it can be a

It’s tempting to send a message and use their phones during class time.

“We want to remove the distraction.”

Of course, there are always those who want to buck the system, so there are noncompliance rules in place. For example, for a first offense, students who don’t comply will receive a verbal redirection; defiance will result in an administrative conference. In an extreme situation, a fourth offense, a student’s cellphone will be collected upon main office entry for the remainder of the quarter.

But Freytas doesn’t expect a lot of problems, especially if everyone knows the rules.

“At RB, we care about them and love them and have their back,” he said. “I believe they will meet the new cellphone procedure expectations. My students are very important to me; this procedure is very important to me and important to the community.”

Substitute teacher pay rate may increase: At its July 14 meeting, the Board of Educa-

tion decided to shift a vote to its Aug. 11 meeting on increasing substitute teacher pay to $25 per hour, up $3 from the current pay rate that has been in place since the 2022-23 school year.

“Increasing the rate of pay for external substitutes assists the district in attracting qualified substitutes,” said Asst. Superintendent Dr. Kristin Smetana. “In turn, the district can foster a positive and productive learning environment for students by ensuring continuity of instruction and effective classroom management during teacher absences.”

Smetana said that historically such a pay rate increase had not gotten board approval.

“However, it makes sense to move it since it is a financial decision tied to payroll,” she said. She noted at the meeting that the pay rate increase would add about $30,000 to district operational expenses.

Internal substitutes, such as teachers or administrators that pinch hit in a classroom for a few hours or a day, receive a pay rate of $40 per hour, she said.

The intense rainfall has significantly impacted many landscapes.

Consistently saturated soil has reduced the ground’s ability to absorb additional water, causing rainfall to collect quickly in low-lying areas, and even on the surface, leading to flooding even with proper drainage solutions. Water can move four ways through soil: percolation down, percolation laterally, being absorbed by roots, or through evaporation. When the soil is so heavily saturated, there is nowhere for it to go.

The unusually wet conditions show how quickly the landscape can change when repeated storms overwhelm natural drainage systems. Let’s all hope that we are able to dry out soon - for both the landscape, and our own sanity.

Kids meet bugs and a giant snake at North Riverside mall event The event at the North Riverside Park Mall featured reptiles, bugs, and amphibians

Children got to meet giant bugs, an enormous tortoise and a Burmese python measuring over 11 feet during the Reptile Show at the North Riverside Park Mall on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

With over 150 guests registered for the event, a crowd of young children gathered in front of Mike Levins, co-owner of Crosstown Exotics, who taught them

about various bugs, reptiles and amphibians. The animals tended to get larger as the event went on, starting with bugs and ending with a giant snake.

Of course, as the animals got larger, cheers and screams from the crowd got louder, as children raised their hands for a chance to pet the next animal.

“A lot of kids don’t get to get up close,” Levins told the Landmark. “Going to the zoo is cool, but a lot of the time you don’t get to pet a tortoise or snake at the zoo.”

Children were invited to come up and pet or hold various animals, such as a giant cockroach and an African bullfrog. At the end of the event, all the visitors could line up and pet Mr. Cuddles, an 11.5-footlong albino Burmese python.

Jeanne Heller, the director of marketing for the North Riverside Park Mall, called the event an “educational way to celebrate [the] back to school [season].”

The mall started collaborating with Crosstown Exotics four years ago, after Heller’s son had seen them at an event, she said. Heller pointed to the company’s emphasis on dispelling fears about animals like snakes and cockroaches as a reason the mall hosts the event.

“They’re really pro-teaching kids about where animals come from,” she said. “[Those animals] serve a purpose.”

snapping turtles, the largest freshwater turtles in North America, lived alongside dinosaurs during the late Cretaceous period, 100 million years ago.

Guests were invited to interact with most of the animals, but the snapping turtle was off-limits. While not generally aggressive, they can bite with a lot of force.

“Part of the job is making sure everyone leaves with all their fingers,” Levins joked.

Among other animals, the event also featured a millipede, a frog, a toad and an iguana — which visitors were allowed to come up and meet.

Levins said he hopes events that allow kids to interact directly with reptiles might make them more inclined to protect nature.

“It gives [children] an opportunity to see something that they might normally be nervous or afraid of,” he said. “Once you get to interact with one of those [animals], you’re more likely, maybe, to not run one over with your lawnmower.”

The reptile event is one of 40 familyfriendly events the mall hosts every year.

Next month, the mall is hosting a Touch a Truck event with the Village of North Riverside, which will feature live music and display vehicles from local businesses.

Meet the new owner of Brookfield’s Creative Dental Dr. Leah Fax wants to honor the legacy of previous owner Dr. Gerald Gardner

If you’re a longtime customer of Creative Dental at 3739 Grand Blvd. in Brookfield, you might have come to associate it with Dr. Gerald Gardner, the original owner and founder. The dental clinic’s new owner, Dr. Leah Fax, said she wants to honor his legacy and extend the practice’s reputation within the Brookfield community.

“Dr. Gerald Gardner was the owner of Creative Dental for many years. He has been part of the Brookfield community for a long time. He opened this practice back in 2012,” Fax told the Landmark. “He was gearing up to retire this time last year. He and I got connected through my husband, who worked with his son’s girlfriend, and I purchased the practice in April.”

Fax said Gardner still “pops in here and there” to visit the clinic but is mostly retired at this point. She said the opportunity to purchase Creative Dental from Gardner came along at just the right time.

“I moved to LaGrange Park last summer, and I really wanted to be close to my community. Being four minutes from where I live, we plan to raise a family and be part of this community for a long time. It’s something I’ve always wanted, to have a private practice that is family-owned and part of the community,” she said.

Fax said she has been practicing dentistry for six years, with most of that time spent in Wisconsin.

“I did all my education up at Marquette [University] in Milwaukee, undergrad and dental school. I really wanted to go into the health care field most of my life. I love dentistry because you can mix that direct patient interaction with being your own practitioner and being able to run your practice the way you want,” she said. “In a lot of health care, you aren’t able to have that much autonomy anymore, and I like that I can customize my patient experience.”

She added that she hopes to sustain Cre-

ative Dental as a locally owned practice in the face of a changing dental industry.

“A lot of dentistry is going more toward corporate or private equity ownership,” Fax said. “I think to be the single dentist and the owner of the practice is a little bit more rare nowadays. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of payoff when you can see what you build, taking care of the community and the patients.”

Fax, who is the practice’s sole dentist alongside a small staff of registered dental hygienists and dental and administrative assistants, said she and Gardner share many values, which played a role in his entrusting the practice to her.

“He’s got a great sense of humor. He’s very generous and kind. He really got to know all of his patients on an individual level over the decade that he knew them,” she said. “People, in a way, are struggling with him being gone because he knew them so well. He was looking for somebody who could have that personal touch with his patients and get to know them on that level.”

She said a “majority” of Gardner’s patients are remaining with Creative Dental through the transition of ownership and starting their patient-doctor relationship with her.

“The patients have all been wonderful.

They’ve been very welcoming to me, and we’re trying to continue their care and keep their dental home as much the same as possible,” she said. “I’m excited to continue Dr. Gardner’s legacy but also make it my own. I’m my own individual and have my own treatment philosophy. I’m excited to see the practice grow, too. We have a great team right now, but I’m wanting to be able to provide more care and have more providers here over time.”

Held said he was “extremely disappointed” with Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke for charging Saracco with a misdemeanor rather than a felony.

“Adam Saracco committed a felony by attacking me on a public sidewalk. That was a felony and attacking someone who appears to be over the age of 60, as I am, is also a felony,” Held said. “There were independent bases to charge a felony, so I’m disappointed in the state’s attorney for her determination to pursue it only as a misdemeanor. [As for] the process itself, I assisted, cooperated with and supplied information to the prosecution team, and they treated me with dignity and respect.”

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, prosecutors said a felony charge would have required them to prove Saracco knew Held was over 60 at the time of the incident.

Held said questions remain in the wake of Saracco’s sentencing as to the consequences for him outside of court supervision.

“Will this admittedly violent individual who wields government power be allowed to keep a firearm? Will he retain his employment? Will the Department of Homeland Security take back the false statements that they made immediately after the incident or after his arrest?” Held said.

“Will [DHS] issue appropriate guidance to their agents, which will rein them in from the much worse conduct that they’ve committed, including murder? Those are serious and important questions that I have because of the broader ramifications.”

Held said he plans to keep protesting against ICE and its detention efforts in the name of upholding human rights.

“I want to turn the ship around and make sure that those members of our community who may not have documentation but are part of the fabric of our society — they’re part of who we are as a people — that they’re treated with respect and dignity and that the law is followed,” he said.

“That the rights of protestors are not only followed but that the administration will … celebrate our First Amendment rights and not try to curtail them.”

Focus on streets from page 1 Trustees and staff had previously undertaken three lengthy discussions of the possible alley program, which would see Brookfield’s gravel alleys gradually redone as so-called green alleys with concrete and permeable pavers, but had not reached a consensus, leaving lingering questions as to the program’s scope, timeframe and administration.

The village board on Monday, Aug. 10, agreed with the recommendation from village staff to focus on the main purpose of the referendum — replacing and maintaining roads — and look to nail down the details of an alley program only if the referendum is approved by voters.

“Staff has met since the last board meeting with our consultants, and it is our collective recommendation to, at this point, start the public education campaign and focus on where the lion’s share of the money is going, which is the roadway,” Village Manager Tim Wiberg said. “In the public education campaign, say that if a referendum passes, the village board commits to holding public workshops and meetings and having more discussion about what our alley program consists of and how as we move forward.”

Wiberg said village staff and representatives from Metro Strategies Group, Brookfield’s referendum consultant, are planning both online and in-person outreach efforts through Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The campaign, which will look to explain the effects on residents and the village if the referendum passes and if it fails, will feature pop-up appearances at the farmers market and school events and an explainer article in an upcoming issue of The Brookfielder, the village’s quarterly print newsletter.

Trustee Kit Ketchmark emphasized the importance of educating residents to avoid a situation where Brookfield lacks a dedicated funding source to maintain roads.

“In 2016, we went to referendum for the series of bonds that were issued [to pay for street maintenance]. Those bonds are expiring now. There is no continuing source of revenue for streets after these bonds,” Ketchmark said. “If you simply read the question that’s being put

out there to the voters, it’s pretty hard to understand what that means … The idea that your taxes will not go up with this, that’s key to it.”

How an alley program could look Trustees had been weighing the pros and cons of two separate cost-share models for the alley replacement program.

One model would see the village cover 100% of costs for each alley replacement; village staff have estimated that program could, in the worst-case scenario, take up to 99 years to cycle through all of Brookfield’s alleys. That length of time could be reduced if staff are successful in receiving federal or state grant funding related to alley improvements over the years.

The second model would have proposed

a 50% cost-share with the residents on the block of each alley as it is being replaced, asking them to match the village’s financial contributions. That program would have a minimum timeframe of 58 years in the scenario where Brookfield relies only on funding collected as a result of the passed referendum and other preexisting sources.

Some trustees worried about the consequences of the 50-50 program for lower income residents or in cases where residents on a block have clashing opinions on paying the costs, as well as whether it would lead to a first-come-first-serve philosophy to replace alleys whose residents were ready to pay sooner. Others felt it might be unfair to residents who had banded together with their neighbors in the past to get their alleys improved to pay for the rest

of the town’s alleys with no resident contribution.

As a group, the village board supported seeking more public input on what residents would prefer the program look like to avoid implementing a less popular version down the line.

“We’ve heard consistently from staff that it’s the number one issue that they hear about from residents, and I know we’ve gotten a few public comments at our board meeting discussions, but certainly not a level of comment that I think is representative of the community as a whole,” Trustee Kyle Whitehead said. “Before we can make decisions about the specific structure of the program and the cost share, I feel like we need to hear more from residents, particularly if our goal is to, ultimately, get more alleys paved.”

Riverside’s new town hall The Riverside village administration has presented a plan for what it is calling a new public safety remodel. A look at this plan shows that it is actually a plan for a new town hall. While it does have new facilities for the police and fire departments, it includes new offices for the village manager, village staff, meeting rooms, a community room and a kitchen, all of which duplicate existing facilities in our historic town hall.

There is also an office for the part-time volunteer board president and amenities like a wraparound balcony and rooftop terrace.

In statements about this plan, village administration stresses the need for new facilities for the police and fire and seems to downplay anything about the other facilities they have included in their plan. These “extras” drive the cost up to an excessive $30 million. Wouldn’t

it have been more cost effective to remodel the current facilities which I have heard would cost $4 million to $8 million.

At a meeting on May 19, the architects presented data that tried to show the $30 million is comparable to public safety facilities in other communities, including Geneva, Wilmette, Libertyville, and Schaumburg. The populations are 2 to 9 times larger than Riverside’s in these communities so it is a stretch to call them comparable.

The cost per Riverside resident is also excessive at $3,400/resident compared to $600 to $2,000 in these other four communities. This is also true with the square footage/resident at 5.2 sq ft/resident, or 2 to 3 times more than the other four. I conclude from this that the other public safety buildings don’t include administrative offices, rooftop terraces, etc.

I don’t dispute that we need to upgrade

the police and fire department facilities, but their legitimate needs have been coopted by the village administration to include their new facilities. What is disturbing is the administration’s claim that this is strictly a public safety building. I was informed by the board president that “providing adequate public safety facilities is the sole reason we are pursuing this project,” when I wrote him about this. If that is true, why is he getting a dedicated office? And do the police and fire department need a balcony and rooftop terrace to function more effectively?

This proposed plan does not really enhance public safety for residents living north of the BNSF tracks, since the plan includes closing Riverside Fire Station # 2 north of the tracks since 70% of the homes, all the schools and all but one church in Riverside are north

of the BNSF tracks. A BNSF freight train rumbling through Riverside will delay emergency services’ response for north side residents or necessitate their reliance on North Riverside, Brookfield, Berwyn, etc., potentially less timely services. However, they would still have to pay increased taxes should the referendum pass. Clearly, the main public safety facility needs to be north of the BNSF tracks with a substation south of the tracks which makes remodeling the current facilities a more practical and cost-effective approach.

In the meantime, Riverside taxpayers are waiting for accurate information on exactly how much a $30 million town hall would increase their taxes. The village manager has seemed reluctant to provide this important information.

Bulldogs go after fourth consecutive conference title State qualifier Forrest returns for two-time Silver champion Lions

Second-year RBHS boys golf coach Charlie Pozen quickly adapted to the high expectations of the Bulldogs in 2025. They captured their third straight conference team title and finished 10th (305) at the Class 3A Payton Sectional with one of the program’s lowest scores ever after finishing 12th in 2024 in the first sectional team appearance since 2015. “(My) first year was focused on building trust and relationships with the players,” Pozen said. “Now they start to know my expectations and style of coaching and I can help the players focus on growing now that we have a good foundation.”

Seniors Oliver Fakhoury and Zak Milchhoefer return from last year’s six-player sectional and regional lineups. They and senior Eliot Kastle also were part of the eight-player Upstate Eight Conference Meet lineup. Other team members include seniors James Caliban, Joe Duffy and Jacob Gonzalez, juniors Paul Byrne, Ryan Ford, Will Harbeck, Teddy Porter, Seamus Simmons, Michael Sloger, Anthony Tyler and Jaden Wzorek and sophomores Leo Fakhoury and Bryce Sherman.

The three conference titles are the only ones in program history. Last year, the Bulldogs won the UEC East Division by going 5-0 in duals and having the division’s best score at the UEC Meet (326) by two strokes.

Fakhoury (83, tied for 16th) was among three Bulldogs who were All-UEC based on UEC Meet and dual results. Milchhoefer (85, tied for 21st) and Kastle also competed.

The Bulldogs previously won the one-division UEC title in 2024 and the Metro Suburban Conference’s final season in 2023. At the 2025 Payton Sectional, Fakhoury (78) and Milchhoefer (82) had counting team scores.

“Strengths are that we have a deep team and a lot of players can score for us,” Pozen said. “Keys are to get each player a shot at playing in conference matches to see what our strongest lineups are, focusing on scoring inside 100 yards as a team (and) limiting triple and double bogeys.”

LTHS boys golf After playing in the toughest 3A sectional last season, the Lyons Township boys golf team once again knows another solid day might not be enough to reach state as a team for the first time since 2021. Senior Charlie Forrest is the lone returnee among three Lions who competed at state in 2025, tying for 34th with a two-round 155 (76-79).

At last year’s sectional, the Lions’ 1-over-

par 289 was fourth and nine strokes from the third of the three state-qualifying teams.

Those three teams then took the three state team trophies at 3A state — champion New Trier, Evanston and West Suburban Conference Silver Division rival York in the same order as sectionals.

“It’s going to be the same (sectional) scenario. I’m assuming we’re going to be with the same teams,” LTHS coach Brian Kopecky said. “That’s just how the state does it.”

The Lions still have the potential firepower to contend and contend for a third straight outright or shared overall Silver title. Senior Ben Hare also was part of the six-player sectional lineup. Senior Grayson Lee and junior Cohen Bloomfield were part of the eight-player lineup at the WSC Silver Meet.

Senior Braxton Bonnevier and junior Adrian Rakvin also return. Other team members are senior Ben Bilecki, juniors Henry Niemiec,

Will Newkirk, Bennett Pairiso and Camden Stoiber and sophomore Colin Biebel.

“I think we have enough competition within ourselves where we can get four guys consistently good (every meet),” Kopecky said.

“Hopefully the weather cooperates because it’s been brutal for everybody (so far).”

The Lions had their season opener Thursday in Champaign delayed by weather for 90 minutes to complete the last two holes.

Their hopes of playing Friday in Bloomington at The Den at Fox Bend, again site of the 3A state meet, Oct. 9-10, were canceled by weather.

On Saturday, the Lions (287) were second at their quad at Fox Bend, 10 strokes behind York. Hare and Bloomfield shot 70s Saturday to tie for fourth. Hare had a team-best 75 Thursday with Bonnevier and Lee (78s) and Niemiec and Biebel (79) also in the 70s.

Forrest has not yet played as he recovers from a wrist injury.

“This was probably (Forrest’s) best summer in the summer tournaments,” Kopecky said. “If we can get a (consistent) fourth guy, then we’ll be in the hunt.”

At last year’s sectional, all three Lions were among four par-72s that took the last four of the 10 individual qualifying spots. Hare (73) came one stroke from forcing a playoff. At the Silver Meet, the Lions shot a then seasonbest 286 to win by two strokes over Hinsdale Central and shares the overall title with the Red Devils after losing their dual meet.

The 2024 Lions won the overall Silver title outright with their 6-0 dual record after the Silver Meet could not be completed because of bad weather. Hare (71) was awarded third based on a scorecard tiebreaker, and Bloomfield (11th, 74) were 2025 all-conference medalists by being among the top 14 scores. Forrest (76) and Lee (77) also competed. Biebel (72) and Niemiec (76) were the Lions’ top scorers in the sophomore WSC Silver Meet.

Forrest and Hare also were part of the 2024 sectional lineup when the Lions again finished fourth, four strokes from third.

“Obviously the goal is to get (to state) and with our (challenging) schedule, when you play better competition, you’re used to seeing some guys dial it up,” Kopecky said.

RBHS girls golf hopes to ride wave of success Bulldogs, Lions work for at least a return to 2A sectional

The Riverside Brookfield High School girls golf team is coming off its greatest postseason in program history. The Bulldogs qualified as a team for sectionals for the first time after winning a second straight Upstate Eight Conference championship.

Juniors and 2025 All-Upstate Eight Conference East Division players Harper Jesswein and Fiona Lombardi and senior Alexis Busse return from the postseason lineup.

“This season’s strength is the experience this group gained from last season’s conference championship and sectional qualification,” RBHS coach Doug Schultz said. “You can see confidence this season that has carried over from last season. We lost a few great leaders but I feel that both Harper and Fiona have learned from that leadership and are ready to lead on their own.”

The Bulldogs again have a large group.

Other varsity returnees include seniors Ava Allison, Avery Blair, Eve Colmone, Violet Furey, Reese Milchhoefer, Reese Nemeth, Genevieve Ramirez and Nicolette Ritacca, junior Kate Hamilton and sophomore Olivia Koralik. Varsity newcomers include senior Fernanda Becerra Barrios, juniors Antonia Black. Isabella Buczek, Elly Dickerson, Allie Ferguson, Lillia Martin and Mia Wichmanowski, sophomores Monica Munch and Nicole Robertson and freshmen Isabella Amaro and Belen Delgado, Abigail Hunter, Carly Kubitz, Olivia Lavoie and Abigail L’Odense.

The Bulldogs still have to overcome the graduations of two 4-year varsity standouts – 2025 individual state qualifier Lucia Vazzana and previous individual sectional qualifier Tali Schultz.

“I feel like we have improved from last season with our returning core working

hard to improve in the offseason along with our new additions that are fitting right into the varsity lineup,” Coach Schultz said.

Jesswein and Lombardi earned 2025 All-UEC honors based on scores from the UEC Meet and duals. Jesswein also was All-UEC in 2024.

RBHS won last year’s UEC Meet (359) by 11 strokes to clinch another outright title after going 5-0 in duals. The Bulldogs’ one-division UEC title 2024 was their first conference title ever. Jesswein was fourth at the UEC Meet on a scorecard tiebreaker and Lombardi fifth, both shooting 91. Busse (tied for 17th, 106), Ritacca (tied for 32nd, 120) and Koralik (39th, 130) also were part of the lineup.

At last year’s Lockport Sectional, the Bulldogs finished 10th (361), four strokes from eighth, with scores from Lomardi (92), Jesswein (98) and Busse (105). Their third-place 363 at the Sandburg Regional gained the last sectional-qualifying spot by seven strokes. Jesswein (93), Lombardi (94) and Busse (124) competed for the Bulldogs. “(The team) will be successful as long as we can keep our frustrations to a minimum,” Coach Schultz said. “We need to focus when those bad shots come and make sure they do not linger.”

“Our team strengths are close chemistry and constant uplifting support. Whenever a teammate needs help, whether it be for rides, swing or the mental game, our team always steps up to help each other out,” Genovesi said.

With junior Caroline McNaughon and senior Lily Heflin also back from the postseason or West Suburban Conference Meet lineups, the Lions once again hope to step up at the big meets. In 2024, Genovesi also competed at sectionals but was among just

LTHS coach Jeff Johnson said. “Experience in tournaments always helps. We have a few seniors and juniors that return with a few seasons of high school experience. We will rely on them to help lead our newer players. Those new players will gain experience as the season progresses and hopefully will continue to improve.”

Genovesi shot 88 at last year’s sectional, eight strokes from the individual state cut, and McNaughton shot 90. McNaughton (87) and Genovesi (88) were sixth and seventh at the Sandburg Regional for the second-place Lions (341). At the West Suburban Conference Meet, the Lions were sixth (351) and fifth in the final overall standings after a 6-3 dual record.

McNaughton (tied for 35th, 94), Genovesi (tied for 38th, 95), Jones (tied for 58th, 108) and Heflin (69th, 122) were part of the eight-player lineup. Collins shot a teambest 97 at the junior varsity WSC Meet. “(Our keys are) stay inbounds, two-putt greens, relax and have fun,” Johnson said.

New faces, same high goals for LTHS girls flag football All-WSC Hoffenberg, Robinson among returnees for regional champions

Junior Taylor Hoffenberg was part of the first Lyons Township High School girls flag football team as a freshman. After the graduation of 13 seniors, most also part of those first two teams, the starting running back is ready for somewhat of a brand new start.

“At first, it was pretty sad. I grew up with (those 2026 graduates) on the team,” Hoffenberg said. “It’s good to have a new team and to be able to try new things. Just a lot of changes that we’re going through and we’re meeting new people. It’s coming together.”

The Lions again have high expectations after regional titles and reaching the sectional semifinals those first two seasons. LTHS improved to 17-4 in 2025 from its 14-4 debut and finished second to Glenbard West in the first season of WSC play with a 5-1 record. The Lions lost 19-0 in the Hinsdale South Sectional semifinals to state quarterfinalist Kenwood.

There’s still plenty of experience and talent to go around.

Hoffenberg and junior Meg Robinson were among the Lions’ six 2025 All-WSC players. Seniors Madeline Blasco, Lorelai Brown, Margeaux Dvorak, Helena Enriquez, Ada Flynn, Lucy Flynn, Christina Lid and Leah Monahan and juniors Alyssa Episcopo and Delaney Episcopo, both of Brookfield, Jane Erickson, Kayden Jackson and Bianca Taylor also are returning starters or varsity returnees.

Other varsity players are seniors Isabelle Atseff, Maddy Dunneback, Stella Pfafflin and Brielle Simmons, juniors Sienna Airhart, Marissa Caron, Kasey Farnan, Norah Hurey, Mary Karam, Isla Riboul, Emily Shumaker, June Smith, Jane Weber and Claire Wheeler and sophomores Kennedy Moore and Evie Riopell.

“The expectations are always high for athletes in our program. I’m excited to see how a new brand of kids kind of take off from where we left off,” LTHS coach Meghan Hutchens said. “Speed is definitely one of our strengths both offensively and defensively. We have some height with our wide receivers. And I just think as the sport grows more and more, the kids are more acclimated earlier. I’m really excited to have these newcomers with speed kind of fit into our mix.”

Hoffenberg led the Lions’ offense last season in rushes (89) and receptions (102) and was second in touchdowns (12) and extra points (9) to graduated Anna Bigenwald, a two-time honorable mention all-stater now playing women’s soccer at Loyola. Robinson, a wide receiver/defensive back, had a team-high 17 interceptions and was third in flag pulls (71) with six batted balls and seven forced incompletes. She also scored nine TDs. “Our strength as a team is definitely our communication, being able to encourage each other. That’s a huge thing since we’re a new team,” Hoffenberg said. “I think my role is definitely going to expand because I’m an up-

Other defensive standouts last season included Blasco (51 flag pulls, 4 interceptions), Lid (39 flag pulls, 5 interceptions), and Monahan (20 flag pulls, 3 interceptions), who also shared second with 12 batted balls. As pass rushers, Ada Flynn (team-high 23 sacks and 38 forced incomplete passes, with 20 flag pulls and Alyssa Episcopo was second in sacks (14) and forced incomplete passes (37).

Karam and Smith are among the encouraging defensive newcomers.

“We’re adding a lot of newcomers on defense. We had a lot of soccer kids come out so I think it’s one of the fastest teams that we’ve had,” Hutchens said.

Last season, LTHS scored at least 20 points in 14 victories and at least 30 in 10 of those. Robinson and Blasco (4 TDs) also will help offensively with wide receiver Erickson and speedy running back Taylor, a strong long jumper

in track, expected to contribute more. Lucy Flynn also had 11 TDs in 2025.

At quarterback, Riopell takes over for graduated twoyear starter Char Ebeid. Riopell and Moore played varsity basketball as freshmen with Hutchens as head coach. “(Riopell is) doing well and well under pressure. I feel like being a varsity basketball player, she can keep up with the speed flag football kind of commands,” Hutchens said.

“Also I think our receivers coming back (has helped). It’s easier for our quarterback because she has that expectation of (consistent) route running.”

The season opens with back-to-back home games against Hinsdale South and Sandburg Aug. 26-27.

“Definitely the key is going to be teamwork and being able to help each other up,” Hoffenberg said. “As teammates, we have to make sure we’re fully confident in ourselves. One bad play doesn’t really show how we are.”
