A look at local record stores

From Val’s halla Records to Oak Park Records, each record store offers a diverse atmosphere

OBy Hector Cervantes Contributing Reporter
ak Park’s record shops are more than music shops — they’re cultural institutions where history, culture and sound meet.
al’s halla Records will celebrate its 54th anniversary on July 26 and 27 with its annual event, hala-Palooza. The celebration will feature live music all day, special record sales and drink specials.
“We actually have a liquor license as well, so we sell beer, wine, and cocktails — including our own beer, which is made by a great local partner, a brewery called Kinslahger Brewing Company,” al’s halla Records owner Trevor Toppen said.
al Camilletti, who founded the store in 1972, was a beloved figure in Oak Park and a cornerstone of the local music community She helped shape musical tastes for generations and created a welcoming space where people could gather and connect.
John Prine, who’s one of the greatest folk artists of all time, used to bring in his new albums for her to listen to and give feedback on. When she passed away in 2018, he came and held

a memorial in the store to celebrate her There’s just a lot ofgreat ” Toppen said.
oppen notes the venue is deeply connected to the local music scene, particularly with young and emerging musicians, thanks to its live stage. It offers a rare opportunity for under-21 artists to perform, unlike many other venues in the area and the city that have age restrictions.
Oak Park Records is another record store that was established in 2004 by a local couple who purchased an existing record store.Over the past two decades, they’ve poured their passion into the business.
When asked what sets Oak Park Records apart from other record stores in the area, Oak Park Records owner Alan Heffelfinger notes the affordability
“Without a doubt,I’ve had customers tell me — and I know myself— that we have cheaper prices than most other stores in the area and the city. People come here for the great selection and great deals. They know, “Hey, this record is $20 at Oak Park Records, but ifI were downtown at Reckless,it would be $35,” Heffelfinger said.
Besides the store’s affordability, the selection ofmusic offered to customers is essential to Heffelfinger
“What I’m doing for the community is offering a wide selection ofmusic across all genres, from all over the world and the United States. It’s exciting to see one person in line buy a hiphop record, and the next person buy Celtic stepping music,” Heffelfinger said.

Iat Publican Quality Bread

PREPING THE STARTER
2 Show and Tell

By Risé Sanders-Weir Contributing Reporter

f you want to make bread just like they do at Publican Quality Bread, you’ll have to wait 40 years. That’s how old the sourdough starter is. If you want to press ahead using a less than middleaged leavening, here are some pointers to guide you along the way.
Publican partner, head baker and author of Bread Head, Greg Wade feeds the starter with water and a blend of whole wheat and bread flours. That combo will autolyze – or start forming gluten chains.

“Something to note is that we withheld salt, because salt strengthens the ionic bonds between gluten chains,” Wade said. “If you added it at the beginning, we have short chains.”

5

A 15-minute rest allows for longer gluten chains that will result in a more open, airy structure to the finished loaf. Salt is added, then a four-hour fermentation. The dough is divided, shaped and rested again, before being nestled into baskets where it will rise for 12-18 hours.

SHAPING THE LOAVES

The next day, the bread is turned out of the basket and scored. “There’s always going to be like weak points in in the bread,” said Wade. “That’s where the bread is going to burst if you don’t score it. You’re making an intentional weak point. And then you’re able to control the way that it opens up.”

3

SCORING TO ALLOW MAXIMUM RISE

INTO THE OVEN
The bread is greeted in a 500˚ oven by a burst of steam that keeps the exterior pliable, so the bread has ample time to rise to its fullest. As the hydration burns off over a 10-12 minute bake, it gives the finished loaf its shiny crust.

“Being around for 50 years means we
have audience members who came as kids and are now bringing their own children to the theater,” Andersen said.
Andersen notes that the Oak Park Festival Theatre has become a summer staple for Oak Park, River Forest and the West Side of Chicago, offering great theater in their backyard.

the years. Not only are we a staple for the Oak Park community, but we’re also a staple for the theater arts community in Chicago,” Andersen said.
The organization produces classical plays but works to make them feel as contemporary and relevant as possible. What sets them apart from other theaters—most of which are indoors—is their outdoor setting at Austin Gardens. According to Andersen, the open-air environment creates a more exciting and relaxed atmosphere.
“Our first year was in the back of a truck that went around the suburbs. After that, we’ve been in Austin Gardens ever since and have had a great partnership with the Park District of Oak Park,” Andersen said.
In addition, The Park District of Oak Park Board of Commissioners has awarded a grant of $101,111.61 to fund the purchase of a brand-new LED lighting grid. This gift marks the largest single donation in the theatre’s history

“So, these new LED lights are going to reduce the amount of power we use, but they’re also going to significantly increase the quality of our work. LED lights are color-changing, which means they can take on any color under
the sun,” Andersen said. “They offer different levels of output that typical lights can’t achieve. As a result, the audience will see and feel that our work has taken a step forward because of these new, advanced lights.”

State of the Village 2025: A Year of Progress and Planning
The Village of River Forest continues to make strides in delivering an effective, transparent, and forward-thinking service to its residents. From responsible financial management to public safety, infrastructure, and community planning, the Village achieved significant milestones in 2024 while laying the groundwork for future improvements. The past year reflected a unified effort to enhance the daily lives of residents and ensure long-term sustainability for the community.
Financial Overview
River Forest ended Fiscal Year 2024 with a surplus in the General Fund—a testament to its strong financial stewardship and longterm planning. The FY2025 budget was passed with a commitment to fiscal discipline, balancing essential service needs with taxpayers’ expectations. The Village also reduced its property tax levy, demonstrating its effort to alleviate residents’ financial pressures while
continuing to fund key public services.
A major financial planning achievement was the approval of a multi-year Capital Improvement Plan. This roadmap outlines upcoming investments in infrastructure, technology, and public facilities and serves as a guide for future funding priorities. These actions not only reflect solid financial health but also a dedication to proactive governance.

intervention, and emerging best practices in law enforcement. The department welcomed three new officers during the year, ensuring it remained fully staffed and equipped with fresh talent.
Department Highlights
Police Department
In 2024, the River Forest Police Department remained committed to proactive policing and meaningful engagement with the community. Officers completed over 1,600 hours of training in areas such as de-escalation techniques, crisis

The year also marked a significant leadership transition. Longtime Police Chief Jim O’Shea retired in the spring after three decades of dedicated service to the Village. His departure paved the way for a new generation of leadership: Deputy Chief Jim Greenwood was promoted to Chief of Police, Commander Mike Swierczynski advanced to Deputy Chief, Sergeant Marty Grill became Commander, and Officer Dan Humphreys was promoted to Sergeant. These promotions reflect the department’s depth of experience and commitment to professional growth.
A notable public safety achievement was the nearly 30% reduction in reported burglaries, highlighting the success of both increased visibility and data-driven policing. Community outreach remained a key focus, with quarterly safety meetings and participation in over 100 local events to foster trust and collaboration between residents and law enforcement.

Fire Department
The Fire Department responded to more than 1,400 calls, with Emergency Medical Services accounting for roughly 70% of all responses. Beyond emergency care, the department supported regional safety through mutual aid and participated in multiple emergency preparedness exercises. Public education continued to be a focus area, with fire prevention seminars and CPR training sessions offered throughout the year.
Public Works
The Public Works Department completed a range of infrastructure improvements in 2024. Projects included major street resurfacing, sewer maintenance, and tree plantings that supported the Village’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The installation of solar-powered speed signs at key intersections improved traffic safety by calming speeds in high-traffic areas.
The department also rolled out an upgraded online service request portal, which allowed residents to submit service needs more easily and track the progress of their requests in real time. These technological improvements earned high praise from users and strengthened the Village’s commitment to responsive government.
The Village was again recognized as a Tree City USA and received an award from the Illinois Arborist

Association for leadership in urban forestry. Building, Planning & Development Building permits and redevelopment activity continued their upward trajectory in 2024. Residential home improvements and commercial storefront renovations were key drivers. This growth reflects River Forest’s status as a desirable place to live and invest.

Looking Forward
The Comprehensive Plan, approved in 2019, continues to serve as a guiding document as the Village considers future development opportunities. Its principles remain central to discussions on land use, sustainability, and revitalization, ensuring that growth aligns with the community’s long-term vision. In a strategic move to enhance business corridors, the Village hired a broker to find a developer for the Madison Street properties. In tandem, a Façade Improvement Program was approved to provide matching funds for small businesses looking to revitalize their storefronts. These programs aim to strengthen local commerce and reinforce the character of River Forest’s business districts.
Boards and Commissions
Resident volunteers serving on advisory boards and commissions made significant contributions to Village policymaking in 2024. Their work shaped decisions on traffic safety, sustainability practices, and economic development strategies. These commissions represent an essential channel for community input and civic engagement, helping to ensure that Village initiatives reflect resident priorities.
As River Forest enters 2025, the Village remains committed to strengthening public infrastructure, increasing transparency, and ensuring a high quality of life for all residents. Planned initiatives include continuing stormwater management projects, expanding the use of technology in service delivery, and fostering partnerships to support senior citizens and small businesses.
Sustainability remains a guiding principle. In the coming months, the Village will begin implementing the newly adopted Climate Action Plan, which was created in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Initiatives under this plan include expanding composting programs, adding public electric vehicle charging stations, and reviewing environmental regulations related to tree preservation and landscaping tools.
River Forest enters the new year on strong footing—financially, operationally, and socially. The Village’s accomplishments in 2024 have built momentum that will guide its priorities and partnerships in 2025 and beyond. Residents can look forward to a future defined by thoughtful planning, inclusive governance, and a shared commitment to community success.

Trailside Museum: Preserving nature, history, and community
Cook County’s oldest nature center invites the community to connect with local wildlife
By Hector Cervantes Contributing Reporter
Nestled within the Forest Preserves of Cook County in River Forest, the Trailside Museum of Natural History has been a haven for many nature enthusiasts since it opened more than nine decades ago.
The Trailside Museum of Natural History is the oldest of the district’s six nature centers, having opened in May 1932 during the Great Depression. Originally designed as a place for visitors to learn about local flora and fauna, it offers a small-scale representation of the natural environment in the region, staffed by experts and featuring native plants and animals.
Assistant Director of Trailside Museum Irene Flebbe said the museum’s most frequent visitors come from nearby suburbs, including Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Elmwood Park,

Maywood and Melrose Park.
The museum offers a variety of events nearly every weekend. Trailside Museum held its Spring Fest on May 4, where visitors were taken on walks through the springtime woods to learn about the plants and animals
“One of our favorite events is Migrating Monarchs in September, where we explore the needs of monarch butterflies, such as the plants and habitats they rely on, as well as the cultural connections this beautiful migrating species has with people. We’ll have Aztec dancers and other activities celebrating the monarchs’ journey from our area all the way to Mexico for the winter,” Flebbe said.

When asked about opportunities for local residents to get involved — whether through volunteering, attending events, or participating in restoration work days, Flebbe explained that Trailside Museum hosts a restoration workday on the third
Sunday of each month and a volunteer-led workday on the first Saturday of the month.
“There are many opportunities for local folks to work on restoration projects in the surrounding woodlands. We also offer year-round programs and classes, including senior
walks, a book club, and morning bird walks,” Flebbe said. “We’re hosting a spring nature writing retreat and hold quarterly bluegrass jams where people can drop in and play an instrument, either in the woods or indoors, depending on the weather.”

2025 local real estate snapshot

This data represents sales of singlefamily homes and condo/townhomes in Oak Park and River Forest from May1, 2024 to April 30, 2025. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/ Listing Price Ratio that show how rapidly the current market is moving.
Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A low Market Time number indicates a strong market that favors sellers. Average Market Time for Detached Housing is at 36 days in Oak Park and 29 days in River Forest, indicating the market is moving quickly.

Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is over 100% as it was in Oak Park
Detached Homes, that means sellers are getting even more than they are asking.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.

Each spring, plants wake up and push their way out of the ground or begin to bud. Most are welcome, some we classify as weeds. Gardeners anticipate planting tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and dream of summertime flavors. Overlooked are the plants that provide their bounty without

conscious cultivation. There is much in the existing landscape that we can eat. Foods you can responsibly forage are mushrooms, berries, fruits, nuts, seeds, or leaves which are all meant to or evolved to be eaten by animals. All of these things will replenish themselves and require no irrigation, fertilizer, tilling, pruning, transporting, replanting, etc.,” said professional forager and food educator Dave Odd.

Each month throughout the growing season Odd leads tours through parkways, parks and alleys of Oak Park. The trips begin and end at Carnivore at 1042 Pleasant St and meals prepped from plants Odd has foraged can ordered for post-walk dining. Reservations at EatTheNeighborhood.com.

Sweet Charity, making Farmers’ Market donuts

DBy Risé Sanders-Weir Contributing Reporter
onuts in hand, fresh produce awaits. It’s hard not to love Saturday morning at the Farmers’ Market in Oak Park. Yours are a part of the 5,000-6,000 donuts whipped into existence each week. Were you ever curious what happens when it’s time to make the donuts?
According to donut committee member, Andrew Houha, every weekend a crew of up to 37 workers mix, fry, coat and sell these delicious treats. Pilgrim Congregational Church has it down to a science. Their donut captains lead the way starting at 4 a.m. Donut ingredients come in
50-pound bags. Mixed and rested, it’s on to the fryer.
After they get their golden-brown crust, a donut must rest. They must be cool before coating. For ones getting a flavor blast, bins of powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar await. Volunteers hand coat each ring of morning-time glory
When the Farmers’ Market opens at 7 a.m., half of the donuts to be sold that day should be finished and waiting on customers. As sales start, the kitchen tried to keep up.
Pilgrim church shares the workload with local non-profits throughout the summer. Organizations who bake get about a third of the funds collected. Making this sweet roll one of the most charitable pastries around.
