other's Day is s ll a bit surreal to me. Eight years ago I was living in NYC, working for Major League Baseball and da ng a soccer player. Li le did I know we would be si ng here today with three li le boys, living in a quiet Chicago suburb.

Motherhood is beau ful, unpredictable, and almost always comes with surprises to remind you how profound our job really is.

Some mes the days are long, but the years are short.

Mothers rarely have alone me, and sanity is tested almost daily. I remind myself how soon they will be out of diapers. Soon they will all be in school. And soon enough, they will be out of the house leaving me to wonder where the years went. Â fill them with happy memories and Enjoy the days, and laughter. When you laugh, your children will laugh. When children laugh, perfect strangers will laugh. Happiness is powerful, contagious, and it is the best gi you can give and receive as a mother. Years from now, you will look back and realize you got through some of the hardest years of your life... with a smile on your face. That is something to be proud of!

oth Nichelle S gger and her now husband grew up in Oak Park. They always knew they wanted to raise a family here. Nichelle is currently a stay-athome mom and caregiver to her son Parker, who was born with a bleeding disorder called hemophilia.

When I asked her what made Mother’s Day special to her, she said, “being a mother is what I wanted to be most in life.� When her son Parker was born with a bleeding disorder called hemophilia, motherhood brought on a whole new set of challenges for Nichelle.

Hemophilia is an inherited disorder that affects the ability to clot a er a cut or wound starts to bleed. Normally, clo ng factors and platelets will eventually make bleeding stop.

However, in hemophilia, there are li le to no clo ng factors in the blood. This means people like Parker bleed for a longer me and will need medical a en on, specifically an infusion, in order for it to stop. “There is a treatment called Advate� Nichelle explains, “it gives Parker the clo ng factors he is missing. Because of this treatment, my brave, beau ful, social boy can run, jump, climb and be who he wants and needs to be. I can breath a li le easier because of it.�

Parents constantly ba le with protec ng their children and also le ng them be free to explore their curiosity. Having a child with hemophilia makes that ba le challenging, but like so many of you, Nichelle faces her circumstances with love and an abundance of strength and courage.

ulie and her family moved to River Forest four years ago from New York City. “I could write a book on the Chicago suburbs,” says Julie, who works in corporate communica ons at Accenture. She and her husband Quinn looked for more than a year before deciding where to call home. “We lost count of how many towns we explored.” They decided to call River Forest their home because they loved its proximity to the city, diversity and walkability.

Her daughter Elle takes ballet at the Academy of Movement & Music, and her twin brother Aidan plays hockey and

soccer. “There are so many opportuni es to get involved in all that Oak Park and River Forest have to offer. We are an ac ve family, who enjoys exploring in both the city and the suburbs.”

Her perfect Mother’s Day starts with a sunny spring day. Since Julie works full me, it also means ge ng to spend the en re day with her twins. “We’ll go to brunch and then we’ll do a play at the children’s theater or we’ll walk around Lincoln Park Zoo or along the lake.”

If they stay local, they’ll likely hit up Marion Street Market or Hemmingway’s Bistro, and then do a long family bike ride.

“This is our third year doing the outdoor furniture sale. It’s been extremely popular. We started out in the parking lot of our Oak Park store, but we quickly outgrew that. The sale is so big, we moved it to our 12,000 square foot LaGrange warehouse.”
