New Residents’ guide To receive a driver’s license or state ID card, you must provide, in addition to a birth certificate, at least two other forms of identification that validate your name, date of birth, Illinois residency, social security number and a valid signature.

The nearest Secretary of State driver’s licensing facilities are at 5301 W. Lexington St. in Chicago; in the Melrose Crossing shopping center at the corner of Mannheim Road and North Avenue in Melrose Park and at 7358 W. 87th St. in Bridgeview.

GETTING TO KNOW

Brookfield Police Chief

What are your ties to the Riverside/Brookfield area?

Are you a native or do you live there now? If not, what brought you to the western suburbs?

Although I do not have any personal or historic ties to the Riverside/Brookfield area, I feel as though this community has become my community after personally investing and being immersed here over the past 16 years.

My family has been attending Brookfield community events for many years now, and we love the warmth and distinctiveness of Brookfield. You feel as though you are a part of the events themselves.

The Fourth of July Parade embodies that in my opinion.

Even as spectators, my family has often been engaged in a way that has been truly special for them. Although I did not know all these things when I came here, it was because of this sentiment that my wife, Sibil, who attended police orientation with me at village hall, told me afterwards that she really believed that Brookfield would be the right fit for me based on the sense of community we both got from the meeting. She attended several police orientations with me, and this was the only place she had that kind of response to.

What motivated you to work as a police officer?

I was enamored and intrigued with criminal justice and the profession of law enforcement from a young age, although I did not seriously think that this was a feasible career option for me for many years.

I have a strong sense and draw towards seeing justice for all. Being able to provide that to others in a fair, effective, and compassionate manner is immensely important to me.

How is the Brookfield Police Department an important part of the village?

The Brookfield Police Department is an integral part of the village in many ways. Besides being the agent to preserve law and order for this community, the police department provides service to the community in many ways that are not punitive in nature.

It often engages directly in events by either having police participants in the Fourth of July parade or walking through large events like Concerts in the Park or Music on Grand to personally engage with attendees, rather than remaining on the sidelines or the periphery of an event.

There'a also department-sponsored programming such as the Bike Rodeo, the school-based Let’s WIN program, Citizen’s Police Academy, Shop with a Cop and more.

What are your officers and staff like? How do they help you do your job?

My officers and staff are the men and women that make it so I can do my job effectively and hopefully well.

I am immensely privileged to lead staff that want to serve the public in a way that is not only fair and equitable, but compassionate and considerate to the complexities of why some offenses are committed.

We have prioritized attention to underlying medical and mental health factors that sometimes causes people to do things, not excusing behavior, but taking note and even bringing those components to light during prosecution if that would provide individuals with more comprehensive treatment and care.

How did the local police force weather the pandemic?

Did it change the way you and your officers work?

I am immensely fortunate that we weathered the pandemic. Like much of society, we had to adapt to many things, and I believe we did that well. We temporarily changed some procedures, also having learned new ways to address some issues. Thankfully, we have been able to mostly resume normal operations now.

What do you love about Brookfield?

I am grateful to work with, work for, serve and relate with people here that truly care about making this community the very best that it can be. I have been privileged to see more of how the village works, and my interactions with more of this community has only grown as I have moved up through the ranks to the chief of police.

Last year, a new program, Tributes & Trees was launched, which gives users an opportunity to make a donation to show recognition//remembrance/thanks to others, which in turn funds the enhancement of Riverside’s landscape. This year’s Arbor Day tree is due to donations made to Tributes & Trees.

April 26 is the 200th anniversary of Frederick Law Olmsted’s birth, a milestone that will be celebrated nationally. In this Year of Olmsted, plans are underway for the Olmsted Overlook, a public nature space overlooking the Des Plaines River that will reflect Olmsted’s philosophy that immersion in nature improves physical and spiritual health. The Olmsted Overlook, composed of 20 native trees will be a serene place that offers an expansive view of green space and the flowing waters below. There is still time to purchase an Olmsted 200 Botanical Box, a unique work of art that uses locally collected seeds creatively arranged over the 1869 General Plan for Riverside. More Olmsted 200 festivities will occur throughout the year. We hope you will join us in celebrating the 200th anniversary of Olmsted’s birth by becoming a member or making a donation.

I am not native, my wife is multigenerational Oak Park, and we moved to Riverside just before my daughter was born in November 1995, here on Lawton Road (named after the same two fur traders we named our Laughton Bros. bourbon after), and we have lived here since.

When did you open Quincy Street Distillery?

We opened Quincy Street Distillery in November 2011, with first production of spirits in the summer of 2012.

What motivated you to open your business?

We originally were interested in starting a winery/distillery in Michigan near our summer home near Holland, Michigan, that could have become a retirement business.

While that was bogged down for a number of years, the building on Quincy Street, had just been renovated, and we decided to first set up a small distillery in town that would emphasize the historicity of the village and our method and style of spirits.

We also wanted it to become a destination business for visitors to the village with tours and a speakeasy cocktail bar.

Why is Riverside a good home base for your business?

The historical nature of the village itself, and the importance of the history of the area well before Riverside in the early and prehistory of the state lend itself well to our branding.

Who are your customers? Do you get a lot of locals who walk over or people coming in as a destination excursion?

Our customers include both many locals who consider us their “neighborhood bar” as well as folks visiting from Chicago and suburbs, throughout the state, from all over the USA, and we even get visitors from abroad. Many of these folks come for the distillery tour & tasting.

In 2018, we were rated in the top 25 distilleries to visit in the U.S.A.

by Travel + Leisure and Yelp. So, we have definitely become a destination business for Riverside.

How did you weather the pandemic? Are things looking up for local businesses now?

The pandemic was a challenge.

Our total revenue dropped by more than half. Our bar and the tours were shut down until we were able to

resume them on a more limited basis in compliance with Cook County and Illinois State health guidance.

Distribution fell by 80 percent, as many bars and restaurants themselves were closed. Since we were able to reopen the bar and resume tour/tastings, things have been picking up, although still not back to the levels prior to the pandemic. We have had the bar open 2 nights a week recently, Friday and Saturday, but we will be adding Wednesday evenings for bar service very soon. Prior to the pandemic, the bar was open four nights a week, including Sunday, which we may add again this summer.

Early in the pandemic, we took advantage of the federal exception for distillers and produced hand sanitizer when it was difficult to get, selling it from our shop as well as through Riverside Foods. So, are things looking up? We are hopeful, but we are not out of the woods yet.

What are your ties to the Riverside Brookfield area? Are you a native or do you live there now?

My position as library director brought me to the Brookfield area in 2005. I am native to Chicago’s Southwest Side and now reside in Oak Park.

What ispired your path to working in a library?

I was inspired to pursue librarianship thanks to working in the college library at Dominican University.

I recognized librarianship as a fascinating path not too many others were considering, and I was lucky enough to begin taking master’s level classes as an undergraduate student. I owe just about everything to that work-study position!

What makes the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library special?

Hands-down, the great group of people who work at the library are what makes us special. Our team of staff members work tirelessly to reach and serve members of all ages and abilities.

Who is served by the Linda Sokol Francis Brookfield Library?

Our job – growing the print and digital literacies of our members – applies to each and every Brookfielder. Accordingly, we see residents of all ages interested in everything from the latest great read to making something new in the Maker Studio to our Summer Reading Challenge.

How did the library weather the pandemic? Are things busier now?

The library moved fairly rapidly to a digital or remote focus for the first part of the pandemic and then to a curbside model once COVID19 was better understood. Like all service organizations who also needed to pivot, we were certainly surprised but happy to deliver most of our classes and events online and also prioritized digital copies of popular materials.

We now find families and individuals are more than eager to return to in-person events after

a long period of being at home.

Basic human interaction has never been more valued and we definitely see a dramatic climb in all of our statistics.

What do you love about Brookfield?

I love the gratitude and appreciation from residents we serve.

BROOKFIELD ZOO... ‘F Since Brookfield Zoo opened in 1934, it has had many “firsts,” including:

Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic is the Chicagoland area’s longest-running light display. The first was held in 1981.

his data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield from May 1, 2021 to April 30, 2022. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio that show how

rapidly the current market is moving.

Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it

closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within

a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A market time of 31 days, as we see for Brookfield single-family homes, is an unusually low number that may indicate homes going under contract within days or hours of being listed.

Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You

might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing

price. If the number is 100%, as it is in Brookfield, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.

GETTING TO KNOW

How long have you been the CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society and were you working within the Brookfield Zoo in a different capacity prior to taking this role?

I started work for the Chicago Zoological Society in 2008 as a veterinarian. In 2012, I moved into the role of vice president of clinical medicine, overseeing our veterinary team, animal hospital operations, and animal health programs. In October 2021, I became president and CEO of the Chicago Zoological Society and director of Brookfield Zoo. What inspired your career path in conservation and working with zoos? What was the path that brought you to Brookfield Zoo? I was involved in a youth volunteer program at Scovill Zoo in my hometown of Decatur. The program exposed me to animal care, wildlife and zoos, and inspired my future career path. I worked as a youth volunteer for many years until I got my first paid job as a part-time zookeeper.

After making the decision to pursue veterinary medicine, my goal was always to return to zoos for my career. During veterinary school at University of Illinois, I was fortunate to spend time as a summer intern at Brookfield Zoo, which only reinforced my career path.

Following my veterinary residency in zoological medicine and work at the Saint Louis Zoo, I was fortunate to be able to return to Brookfield Zoo as a veterinarian.

My career as a veterinarian in a zoo has been tremendously rewarding. Every day is something different and exciting. I’ve provided care for amazing animals, worked closely with brilliant scientists and conservationists, taught future veterinarians and hopefully inspired many people about the importance of conserving wildlife and nature.

Why is Brookfield Zoo such an important part of the Brookfield neighborhood and the greater Chicago area?

Annually, the Chicago Zoological Society generates over $153 million in economic activity in Illinois, and draws tourists from around the region to local businesses and communities.

We provide thousands of employment opportunities, and many of our staff members live in the local neighborhoods.

Brookfield Zoo is a place for children and families to learn, explore and play, right in their own backyard.

Zoo has partnered with local libraries, including Brookfield and Riverside libraries, to engage people in nature-based programs and create healthy spaces for people and wildlife, including pollinator gardens.

As you began your new position in the fall of 2021, how is Brookfield Zoo emerging from the period of the pandemic?

Starting into this new position in the middle of a pandemic has been a challenge, but I’m excited about what lies ahead. As we emerge from the pandemic, we are in a stable financial position and are looking to the future.

We will be moving forward with a new Master Plan for the zoo and Society that will chart our course towards a centennial celebration in 2034 of Brookfield Zoo’s opening.

What do you love about Brookfield Zoo? The animals and staff at Brookfield Zoo. I’m fortunate to work with some of the most amazing professionals in the zoo community who are passionate about the important role that zoos play in conservation, education, and recreation.

Zoos connect communities and people in the pursuit of protecting wildlife and nature. Our staff ensures that our animals are healthy and happy, that our guests are learning new things and having fun, and that conservation programs are making a lasting difference in the world.
