Brookfield Historical Museum 12 years and counting

fter a brief closure, the Brookfield Historical Museum at the Grossdale Station reopened in time to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the village of Brookfield and the 129th anniversary of the station in 2018. Director Kit Ketchmark notes that over the years, the museum featured exhibits on mob ties, local Indian tribes and even ghost hunters. Much of the permanent exhibits feature artifacts from the first half of the 20th Century — from a 1903 baseball uniform to World War I and World War II uniforms from village residents, to the upstairs apartment where the station master lived. The displays offer a glimpse into an earlier time in the village. Ketchmark says of the station, “It’s pretty cool to have a building still here, built by our founder before the town was founded. It’s a community endeavor, and it’s a part of the community in so many ways.”

Chicago lawyer turned real estate investor, buys large parcels of land along both side of the railroad tracks approximately 13 miles west of Chicago. He begins to subdivide the area into streets and lots, creating a plan for a village for working class families. ■ 1889: Gross officially opens “Grossdale” on June 15 and offers lots for sale. The first two buildings constructed are a train station south of the tracks and Pavilion across the tracks. The Pavilion housed the village’s first post office, general store and Gross’ real estate office. ■ 1893: On November 7, early residents vote to incorporate Grossdale. ■ 1894: The first meeting of the Village Board. ■ 1905: The village changes its name from Grossdale to Brookfield. ■ 1981: The Original Grossdale Station ceases operation. A group of residents band together and buy the station for $1 and moved it across the street at a cost of $15,000. It now houses Brookfield’s Historical Society and Museum. ■ 2014: Brookfield celebrates the 125th anniversary of the original Grossdale train station. Now on the National Register of Historic Place, the train station is one block from the current, operating Brookfiled train station and the village’s downtown.

Getting to know GINO AND GRACE TOSCANO Owners of Vesuvio Bakery, North Riverside

ino and Grace Toscano own Vesuvio Bakery in North Riverside and work there today with their two adult children, including Pina Ritacca, who answered these questions about the family business. How long have you owned Vesuvio Bakery? Gino and Grace have been owners of Vesuvio since March 4, 1984. They are third generation owners. Vesuvio has been in business since 1908. The first owners, from 1908 to 1952, were Mr. and Mrs. Piccolo. From 1952 to 1984, Vesuvio was owned by Anthony and Josie Pape. Grace and Gino both worked for Josie’s brother, Frank Esposito, at Esposito’s bakery and would come to Vesuvio and help them, if needed. What makes Vesuvio Bakery a great place to work? Vesuvio is a great place to work! Gino loves his job: he loves the people, and he loves keeping traditions alive. Gino works with his wife and two children and enjoys seeing the same customers come in. Gino loves talking to his customers. The reason I love working here is that our customers know us and we know them. It’s not just “What can I help you with?” It’s “How are you, how are the kids?” Knowing our customers on a personal level is a great part of the job. I have so many customers that walk in and that don’t say a word. They take their money out, and we all just know

what they want! Our customers are what make working here so great. When my parents bought Vesuvio, I was only 1 year old. I was here every day with them. Our customers watched me grow. They all were there when my brother was born 14 years later. When our customers walk in, they say, “I remember when you were a baby.” When I had my daughter, I came back to work at Vesuvio and brought my children with me. Again, the customers saw my kids as babies and see them grow. What kind of treats are you best known for? Our course the main thing we are known for is our cannoli, but there is so much more to us than our cannoli. We have a bunch of other pastries: eclairs, sfogliatelle, napoleons and more. We also make our own

doughnuts. Chocolate cake doughnut is my favorite. We also make our bread daily. My favorite is that hard crusted bread. It’s hard and burnt, but delicious. We’ve supplied the bread for Benny’s Pizza in Berwyn for the last 40 years. We also supply bread to Old Warsaw. In the last couple of years, we started making frozen dinner trays, which are huge hits for quick dinners. What do you love about the overall community of North Riverside? North Riverside is a great place to own our business and to live. We love how close this community is. If a customer drives by and sees a light on or something isn’t right, they call us and check up on us. Knowing that we live in a community that looks out for one another is great.

Getting to know DAN AND BRENNA VELCICH Owners of Burger Antics

an and Brenna Velcich opened Burger Antics in Brookfield in June 2013. Their Grand Boulevard restaurant has become a sought-after dining spot, not just for the burgers, but for the other home-made specialties such as the sides, craft beers and cocktails and famous milkshakes. Dan answered our questions about the business. How long have your owned Burger Antics, and what did you do before opening the restaurant? Brenna and I started Burger Antics in June of 2013. Before that, I was a union electrician (IBEW Local 134), and she was the sous chef at Owen and Engine, a British-style gastropub in Chicago's Logan Square, at the time, a Michelin Bib Gourmand-listed restaurant. What is your background in the food world, and what are your roles at Burger Antics? Brenna is our executive chef, responsible for all recipes on our menu and running our back-of-house. She has been studying and working in the hospitality industry for 12 years. She has operated in many different types of restaurants, but American cuisine is her passion. She worked her way through the ranks of those kitchens from prep cook on, which taught her the importance of communication and teamwork. I am our general manager, responsible for day-to-day operations and running our front-of-house. I'm a Certified Cicerone who

has been studying craft beer both domestically and abroad since 2007, traveling to such places as Belgium and Germany to try authentic beer styles from their source. While burgers are an obvious draw, what else do customers love about your food, and what are some favorite menu items? Our fried pickles, mac â€˜nâ€™ cheese, and maple bacon doughnut are our most popular items. We're a scratch kitchen who's gotten a lot of attention for our housemade sauces, though our ketchup can be particularly divisive. We also prepare all our desserts in- house, including our ice cream, which we use to make our very popular milkshakes. Customers also love that our menu is ever-changing. We offer a Burger of the Week and a Burger of the Month alongside our other monthly specials, and we put together a new brunch menu every weekend. On the beverage side, we have 16 rotating draft lines serving only craft beer, an extensive cocktail program, and a list of about 200 whiskeys, so there's always something new to try. We also cater to those looking for a non-alcoholic drink, serving a selection of about 20 craft sodas and a mocktail menu.

What makes Brookfield a great place to own a restaurant? Our location is amazing. We're right off the Metra line, so we get a ton of foot traffic. We love the small-town feel, but we're close enough to still feel like we're a part of Chicago. The people of Brookfield have been outstanding, supporting us through the years in a way we never could have predicted. We couldn't imagine we would have been more successful anywhere else. What kind of people come into Burger Antics? We get the full spectrum of customers, from construction workers to white-collar business people during lunch to friends, families and random walk-ins during dinner who've just heard about us and want to experience what we have to offer. What do you love about Brookfield? We've invested a lot into Brookfield. We're not just business owners, we're residents. Brenna grew up here, she studied at Riverside-Brookfield High School, and we bought our first home here in early 2017. We plan to be here for a long time, and we hope to help make Brookfield a better place along the way.

Getting to know KARL BOLLNOW

Golf professional at the Riverside Golf Club

arl Bollnow started working at the Riverside Golf Club as a caddy when he was in high school and never really left. Moving up the ranks to become the club’s golf professional in 1996, he loves the sport, mentoring caddies and connecting with members of the club. How long have you been with the Riverside Golf Club? I’m beginning my 23rd year as the head golf professional and starting my 48th year of association with the club. I started as a caddy in 1971 and never left. I worked as a caddy, the caddy master, the associate golf professional and I worked for my predecessor until he retired in 1996 after 31 years. When did you first learn to play golf, and what do you love about the sport? I didn’t start playing golf until I started caddying in ninth grade. I always played other sports, and I thought golf was a very interesting game. What I like about it is that all of your successes and all of your failures -- it’s all on you.

What do you do as a golf professional at Riverside on a day-to-day basis? I arrive early, by 5:30 in the morning. I meet with the golf course superintendent to go over the coming day. We’re getting ready for members to show up and getting everything from the carts to the bags ready for their arrival. I monitor the first tee when they start playing and manage lessons and clinics throughout the day. I work with the caddies. I manage any tournaments and monitor our fully equipped golf shop. During the season, I’m there until about 9:30 every night. A typical season, weatherpermitting, the members play from midMarch through Thanksgiving. This winter, we

What do you find most satisfying about your work with the Riverside Golf Club? I enjoy the interaction with members. I have been here so long, a lot of them, I’ve watched them grow up, and now, I watch their youngsters grow up. If I can add a special twist to the day for any of them, that’s my biggest thing. The caddy program is also near and dear to me. We have the Chick Evans Scholarship and Riverside offers its own scholarship also. Giving back to the community and youngsters from all walks of life is great. The program really is a melting pot. I think everyone learns from each other. To help youngsters like someone helped me all those years ago really means a lot.

Getting to know STEVIE FERRARI

Brookfield recreation director

n 2018, Stevie Ferrari was hired as the recreation director for the Village of Brookfield – the village’s first directorlevel employee to lead that department since 2003. She looks forward to playing a role in the tightly knit community and bringing opportunities for fun and engagement to residents from babies to senior citizens. How long have you worked as the recreation director for Brookfield? What did you do before taking on this role in the community? I began as recreation director in July of 2018. Prior to this role I was the assistant director for Leyden Township Parks and Recreation as well as serving in other recreation roles with other organizations over the past 15 years. Why was this an appealing career choice for you? Working in a public administration field appeals to me because I can do a great amount of good for a large population of people. Being a public servant via providing various recreation opportunities for infants through seniors provides a great amount of intrinsic benefits. I enjoy creating, solving problems and making people happy. I get to do all of these things as a director of parks and recreation. The director’s position had not been filled since 2003. What do you think having someone in this role does for the community? Having a director of parks and recreation allows for additional growth and

continued needs of the community to be met. Our parks and recreation programming will not get overlooked, and having a director means these areas have an advocate for growth.

this community. The Parks and Recreation Department serves all individuals with no regard to race, ability, age, sex or religious orientation. We create an inclusive environment willing to help and serve everyone.

What makes Brookfield a great place to work? Brookfield is a close-knit community. There are various organizations who I have seen come together to form partnerships and support. This extends to departments operating within the village as well. The staff’s willingness to support each other’s departments and help and provide answers and assistance when needed keeps the village operating smoothly.

What do you love about the community of Brookfield? The village of Brookfield not only has a deep history rich with growth and family traditions but has the potential for continued growth and new traditions not yet developed. I love the atmosphere of Brookfield, the excitement that families have expressed with new events and programs and the willingness to welcome new changes. This is a beautiful community with the potential for not only preserving what we have now but for providing growth opportunity as well.

What kind of people do you serve as the recreation director of the community? I have the benefit of serving all people of

r. Mike Adkesson is the VP of Clinical Medicine for Brookfield Zoo and notes that with roughly 3,000 animal patients to care for, the zoo’s veterinary clinic is never a dull place to work. He calls caring for the animals at the zoo a team effort, stressing that all of the animal care staff are involved in day-to-day

monitoring of the animals. “We focus heavily on preventative care, with annual, comprehensive exams for most patients.” He points out that because many of the animals at the zoo are considered wild animals, they have adapted to hide any health issues in order to avoid appearing weak to other animals who prey

Dolphins are trained to present poolside and voluntarily lie in position to enable an ultrasound exam, and can

also be prompted to go into a tail-up position to enable blood collection. Last year, when a giraffe had dental concerns, his trainers worked with him to teach him to lay his head on a wall so that his teeth could be examined. The onsite hospital can accommodate animals as large as gorillas and zebras and the staff serve as primary care physi-

cians, dentists and optometrists for a wide range of species. The onsite clinical pathology clinic and imaging services enable the doctors and technicians to provide the best possible care to their patients.

Getting to know MICHAEL COLLINS Riverside village forester

ichael Collins has been the Riverside village forester for 15 years and is a certified arborist with the state of Illinois. A childhood love of climbing trees led him to study forest science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and get an M.S. degree in natural resources from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Today, his love of trees has turned into a vocation taking care of trees in a village designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. How long have you worked as the forester for Riverside? What did you do before taking on this role in the community? I am starting my 15th year with the village of Riverside. Before Riverside, I worked as the grounds arborist at Cantigny Gardens in Wheaton and as a research assistant at the Morton Arboretum. Why was forestry an appealing career choice for you? The career path evolved over time. The more I learned about trees, the more fascinated I became with their physiology and how trees function and adapt to their environment. Do you have a childhood connection to the outdoors or trees? As a kid, I always loved to hike and bike in the woods, climb trees and get stuck. I would disappear for the day and my parents would have to send out a search party to get me to the dinner table.

What role does the village forester play in Riverside? As the Lorax would say, “I speak for the trees.” I manage several programs to improve and maintain our urban forest. I manage tree trimming, planting and removal programming to ensure our urban forest is safe, diverse, and healthy. What makes Riverside a great place to work? Riverside’s historic landscape is a premier position for an urban forester. It is an Olmstedian masterpiece with natural areas and an urban interface. Ecological restoration and arboriculture in one job is the best of both worlds.

Do you get to interact with residents of the village frequently as part of your work? Yes. I work with many dedicated and wonderful volunteers and local civic organizations in our community to maintain our landscape. I also support our residents by responding to all tree concerns or questions on a regular basis. What do you love about the community of Riverside? While working in Riverside, I have built some wonderful relationships with residents, volunteers, coworkers and our elected officials. People really care about their trees and I care about Riverside, so it’s a rewarding relationship.

Getting to know JAMES BAUM

Band director at Riverside Brookfield High School

ames Baum has been working at RBHS for 12 years, starting as assistant band director, orchestra director and jazz band director. When Kevin McOlgan retired in 2012, Baum also assumed the title of head band director. This year he’s added a new rock band class that he also teaches. How did you embark on a career as a high school band director? I actually graduated from RB in the class of 2003. We had a lot of talented musicians that year, many of whom are playing/ performing/teaching music as a career, so I was really inspired by many of my peers. I play saxophone, which I picked up as a student at Brook Park in fourth grade. It wasn’t too long into playing saxophone that I knew I wanted to be a music teacher. I had a lot of great music teachers, but the most inspirational was Kevin McOlgan. He began teaching me in fifth or sixth grade on the saxophone, and then he was my music teacher all throughout high school. Once I became a teacher at RB, I was fortunate to share an office with him. Diane Marelli was also a great mentor of mine once I became a teacher, especially for all of the little things they don’t teach you about being a teacher; she’s a real master. I also had a ton of great experiences with my peers and professors at Northwestern University where I did my graduate work. What makes Riverside Brookfield High School a great place to work? RB is such a great place to work because we have a wealth of students who “get it”

when it comes to music. Many come from musical families and are inspired by all of the culture our community and Chicago offer them. We have so many great music teachers at our feeder schools, and we have many great professional musicians who live in our community who work with our students as private lesson teachers. By the time I get these students, their musical imaginations are ablaze! It’s a joy to work with these kids every day. On top of that, our Fine Arts Department is staffed with some of the most creative and passionate teachers who I get to work with on a daily basis. How many kids are in the band at RBHS? Right now, there are about 140 enrolled in the band, 55 in orchestra, 40 in Jazz, and 60 in Rock Band. Across the music department we have 426 students (26 percent of RB’s student body) electing to take music this year! What are some of the best aspects of working with teenagers? Teenagers are pretty cool. You can talk to them like they’re adults about really deep concepts in music, yet they’re still kids, so they sometimes do goofy things

in the classroom that end up being really musical and creative. The music classes at RB are pretty magical places to be, and it’s the students who are at the center of the fun, accepting, and bringing a creative atmosphere in all our rehearsals. What do you love about the community of Riverside and Brookfield? This community is my home. I grew up in Brookfield, was a Boy Scout in Troop 90 of LaGrange Park, I go to church at St. Paul’s Episcopal in Riverside and I’ve made my own home in North Riverside. I’m definitely a product of our community. I’ve traveled the world and seen many great places, but what keeps me here is our small-town charm and the commitment we have to the fine arts and our children. The best way to describe who we are as a community is to talk of ourselves as a fine arts community. We host many concerts in our churches, parks, and schools. There is a constant presence of public art displays. We host two great art festivals and we have several galleries and studios within our borders. This is definitely the creative atmosphere that made me who I am, and I’m proud to be here working to build and maintain that energy for all of our students.
