Photographer for the Brookfield Zoo

KNOW TO GETTING

When did you discover your interest in photography and how did you develop it?

I took a photography class when I was a student at RiversideBrookfield High School. One of the photos I did of Salt Creek won a scholastic achievement award, and I was encouraged to do more.

How long have you been the photographer for the Brookfield Zoo and how did you start doing the job?

March marked my 25th year as the full-time photographer at the zoo. In total I’ve been with the Chicago Zoological Society for about 34 years. I started as a volunteer photographer, and then worked in the Commissary Department seasonally for 2.5 years before becoming a seasonal photographer. I was hired on full time in March 1996.

What are some of the challenges of working with wild animals?

I’m not sure challenges are an issue as much as learning to know and understand an animal — its behaviors likes/dislikes, and making sure that the animal is comfortable and engaged with its subject, or even me for that matter.

Taking a photo of a bird can be so much more of a challenge than taking one of a giraffe.

What have been some of your favorite moments to capture at Brookfield Zoo? Over the years, there have 6 | 2021 Brookfield/Riverside/North Riverside Answer Book been so many favorite moments. I definitely enjoy being able to capture the births of many of the animals and even those of their offspring, as well as the excitement of a crowd during some of the special events.

Additionally, I was very fortunate to be able to travel to Australia for 16 days to photograph an institution-related project.

Has the COVID-19 pandemic altered your ability to get photos at the zoo? If so, how?

Working during the pandemic has given me the ability to do some of the most rewarding photos I feel I’ve ever done.

When we were closed to the public, I tried to do the best I could to document the animals, whether they were new to the zoo like Brutus and Titus

ALEX ROGALS/Staff Photographer

— African lions who arrived just after the zoo closed to guests for the first time in March 2020 — or animals that have been here for a long time.

It was really important to keep the public engaged when we were closed. Being able to share photos on our social media channels or with the media helped Brookfield Zoo keep that connection with the public.

What do you love about living in the area?

I recently moved to Riverside. However, except for 10 of my 60 years, I’ve lived in Brookfield — born and raised. It’s a town that in all honesty hasn’t changed. I still see locals I’ve known since I was a kid, and I really enjoy the small-town businesses like Off Broadway and Tischler Finer Foods. It’s truly a town that time will never forget.
