GETTING TO KNOW
Photographer for the Brookfield Zoo When did you discover your interest in photography and how did you develop it? I took a photography class when I was a student at RiversideBrookfield High School. One of the photos I did of Salt Creek won a scholastic achievement award, and I was encouraged to do more. How long have you been the photographer for the Brookfield Zoo and how did you start doing the job? March marked my 25th year as the full-time photographer at the zoo. In total I’ve been with the Chicago Zoological Society for about 34 years. I started as a volunteer photographer, and then worked in the Commissary Department seasonally for 2.5 years before becoming a seasonal photographer. I was hired on full time in March 1996. What are some of the challenges of working with wild animals? I’m not sure challenges are an issue as much as learning to know and understand an animal — its behaviors likes/dislikes, and making sure that the animal is comfortable and engaged with its subject, or even me for that matter.
ALEX ROGALS/Staff Photographer
been so many favorite moments. I definitely enjoy being able to capture the births of many of the animals and even those of their offspring, as well as the excitement of a crowd during some of the special events. Additionally, I was very fortunate to be able to travel to Australia for 16 days to photograph an institution-related project. Has the COVID-19 pandemic altered your ability to get photos at the zoo? If so, how?
Taking a photo of a bird can be so much more of a challenge than taking one of a giraffe.
Working during the pandemic has given me the ability to do some of the most rewarding photos I feel I’ve ever done.
What have been some of your favorite moments to capture at Brookfield Zoo?
When we were closed to the public, I tried to do the best I could to document the animals, whether they were new to the zoo like Brutus and Titus
Over the years, there have 6 | 2021 Brookfield/Riverside/North Riverside Answer Book
— African lions who arrived just after the zoo closed to guests for the first time in March 2020 — or animals that have been here for a long time. It was really important to keep the public engaged when we were closed. Being able to share photos on our social media channels or with the media helped Brookfield Zoo keep that connection with the public. What do you love about living in the area? I recently moved to Riverside. However, except for 10 of my 60 years, I’ve lived in Brookfield — born and raised. It’s a town that in all honesty hasn’t changed. I still see locals I’ve known since I was a kid, and I really enjoy the small-town businesses like Off Broadway and Tischler Finer Foods. It’s truly a town that time will never forget.

Senior Advisor Waddell & Reed Investment Services 708-485-9224
How long in Business: Over 53 years Why choose this area: I have lived and have been involved in this community for over 50 years. Greatest current business challenge: Keeping up with all the tax changes and Continuing Education Credits that are necessary for my multiple licenses, including my E.A. status. What do you love about your work: The people. I love the many people I have met. Your business philosophy: To treat clients the way I want to be treated. To treat them as I would treat an invited guest. Greatest accomplishments: Receiving the Woman of the Year Award, Cicero Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, Multiple Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award, Western Springs Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Millenium Award, Five Who’s Who Awards, State of Illinois Woman of Distinction Award, Ronald Reagan Gold Award and two times elected Village Clerk of Brookfield. What have you learned: I have learned that many people pay taxes unnecessarily. With just a little bit of pre-tax season advice, we can cut their taxes by a lot.
How long in Business: Over 40 years Why choose this area: I wanted to do financial planning for people who really NEEDED financial planning. 40 years ago there were only financial planners for the rich. Greatest current business challenge: Helping my clients remember investing is for the long term and to stick with their goals rather than trying to give into the ups and downs of the market. What do you love about your work: The people. My clients become my friends. Your business philosophy: To invest my clients’ money as I would invest mine or my children’s. Greatest accomplishment: Being the first Waddell & Reed Representative to maintain 250 million of clients’ money under management & being inducted to Waddell & Reed’s Hall of Fame. What have you learned: I have learned that giving good finanical advice can help people turn their dreams into goals that can be reached.

rookfield and Riverside were built around the ever-expanding rail system in the United States. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad built a rail line through what would become Riverside in 1863, and one of the first buildings to stand in Brookfield was a train station. Let’s hop on the flavor train and explore a few notable dining destinations this little Illinois alcove. Every stop along the way promises to deliver deliciousness whether you are craving a juicy burger, diminutive dessert, or classy cocktail. Dining in Landmark territory means you are always in the right track.
Stop at the baggage car:
Every memorable trip starts with perfectly packed luggage. If you are looking for a sweet spin on custom packaging look no further than Fill My Jar, 3726 Prairie Ave. in Brookfield. Food Writer Traditional toffee, foil-wrapped caramels and peppermint bark form the spine of Fill My Jar’s product line — much of which is appropriately sold in whimsical mason jars with customizable lids. Packing has never been so sweet!

Drinks in the bar car: Quincy Street Distillery, 39 E. Quincy St. in Riverside, is known for serving
cocktails brimming with vintage charm, but the pandemic has put a pause on pouring in the tasting room. However, you can still mix up your own bar car-worthy cocktail at home. Find a recipe for a Bee’s Knees, using QSD’s Old No. 176 American Gin, on their website at quincystreetdistillery.com. The Railroad Gin is sippable on its own and named after the first custom built engine for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Cheers!
First-class fare: Burger Antics, 3740 Grand Blvd. in Brookfield, welcomed guests back into their dining room on April 1. The wellloved restaurant focuses on chefdriven burgers, craft cocktails and heavy metal music. Chef Brenna Velcich turns classic burgers into first-class fare through her passionate attention to detail.
28 | 2021 Brookfield/Riverside/North Riverside Answer Book
Expect to find house-made Dijon on the Midland — a steak burger garnished with Velcich’s pickles, caramelized onions and crumbed English cheddar.
Dining car desirables: Tom and Lou’s Drive-In, 8819 Ogden Ave. in Brookfield, serves up the traditional fare with vintage flair designed to be grabbed while on the go. All menu items are cooked to order at Tom-n-Lou’s and boast a thoughtful retro flair. The chicken sandwich is owner Lacey Mizell’s pride and joy. Chicken is buttermilk brined, double breaded and fried to golden brown before being nestled on a bun and topped with mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce, and onion. Turn your vehicle into a “dining car” when you pull into Tom and Lou’s drive through!

Headed to the sleeping car:
Before heading to bed be sure to enjoy a nightcap at Catrina Tequila Bar, 34 East Ave. in Riverside. The vibrant bar brings distinctive Día de los Muertos spirt to Riverside and owner Gisela Muñoz worked closely with a mixologist to develop the cocktail repertoire for Catrina. The offerings, including a quartet of margaritas, are designed to modernize classic Mexican drinks. You are sure to have sweet dreams after sipping on Catrina’s Paloma Negra. The drink is the color of
the night sky and elevates a classic grapefruit and tequila cocktail by giving it a mysterious hue without sacrificing flavor.
Don’t forget the caboose:
Café Tere, 8420 Brookfield Ave. in Brookfield, offers a sweet finish to our ride on the flavor train. Since opening mid-pandemic, Teri and Charlie Mortel have been turning out popular sweet treats including much-lauded opera cake, pumpkin cheesecake, notable Russian honey cake, and handmade scones. The
bakery also churns out savory items like hand-rolled croissants, everything bagel-seasoned focaccia and breakfast sandwiches. Don’t underestimate the last car on this train.

LIZ CHILSEN
How long have you been the executive director of the Riverside Arts Center? What led you to this role? I’ve been executive director at Riverside Arts Center (RAC) since January 2021, having been director of the RAC’s FlexSpace Gallery for a year. I was executive director of an international peace and justice organization in Wisconsin before I moved to Chicago to study and teach photography. I’ve run my business as an independent photographer and also curated and directed large and small visual arts exhibitions, including one year, the Chicago Art Open for the Chicago Artists’ Coalition. Describe your work as an artist. How has that evolved over time? My first medium was ceramics, and then I turned to photography which largely defined my artistic practice for many years. My photography is centered on the experience of place – architecture and the built environment, and I’m drawn to old places with a story. For example, in 2019 Landmarks Illinois asked me to photograph the 50th anniversary of their Endangered Places list. The first of 50 places I photographed around the state was Riverside’s own lovely Arcade Building. When I’m working on my ceramic sculptures, the practice is similar to the way I photograph; I focus with close attention to detail and feeling. The work forms in a feedback loop of observation and action. My ceramics are expressions of

flight and fire, connections to deep feelings of freedom and loss. How has the pandemic changed the experience of making art? Many artists have turned to working in simpler ways using materials that are close at hand. Drawing, collage, and quilt making for example are seeing a surge of popularity and interest, and we at RAC have been part of that. Our former executive director has taught a regular collage class, and we have unveiled our Community Quarantine Quilt, which includes quilt squares from 30 Riversiders. It’s a truly beautiful expression of shared aspirations, some fears, and overriding hope. How has the Riverside Arts Center responded to that change? Our immediate response to the pandemic was to be inventive and to keep people safe. We thrive on the community of people who depend on us
and support us, and we felt the responsibility to continue offering inspiration, art experiences, and creativity. Our school manager developed popular “stay-at-home” project boxes and online classes. Our galleries initiated a program of virtual artist talks, and we worked with artists to curate exhibits intended to be experienced from the street. For example, Chicago artist Mayumi Lake, who had originally been scheduled to exhibit inside the gallery, instead created a stunning installation in our FlexSpace window. which transformed at night into a colorful glittering lightshow. Chicago art critic Lori Waxman described it as “a sexy fusion of the noble and the flashy, the archaic and the futuristic.” The demands of the pandemic have led us to be more attentive to the audience outside our spaces and more consciously using our windows to engage passersby in a dialog with ideas and art.

GETTING TO KNOW
Principal at Riverside-Brookfield High School How long have you been the principal of Riverside Brookfield High School? This is my second year as principal of Riverside Brookfield High School. Prior to COVID-19, in your first year at RBHS, what did a typical school day look like for you? At about 7:30 a.m., every morning, I was outside of the main doors, greeting the students, giving them high fives, and checking on their well-being, by simply asking, “How are you doing today?” Once the bell rang at 8 a.m., I strived to greet all of my staff: clerical, maintenance, security, cafeteria workers, teachers, fellow administrators, and ask them, “How can I be supportive today?” I always checked on my team before I began taking phone calls, answering emails, or attacking important tasks. Once all that was done, I began to work formally. I facilitated or supported staff meetings, met with parents, met with students, analyzed data on the Illinois Report Card, reported critical information to the superintendent, and read educational articles to stay current with best practices. I co-planned for future programming, did walkthroughs in classrooms, greeted students during every passing period, met with community stakeholders, met with fellow administrators, conducted interviews and evaluated staff all in the spirit of moving our vision and our school forward. At the end of the day, just like the beginning, I dismissed the students and told them, “Be safe going

What have been some of the challenges and bright spots to this unusual year in education?
During your first year as Principal at RB, the Covid-19 pandemic began. How did your approach to your job have to change?
The challenges: Co-existing with COVID-19. The bright spots: Seeing our RB teachers teach students how to leverage a variety of digital tools for learning. There have been learning gains in the midst of a “learning loss” narrative. Seeing our students follow our safety protocols. Working with my teachers who have been at school since the beginning of the year. Watching our first virtual fall play, spring musical, musical concerts, etc. Doing the equity work.
The biggest change in my approach to doing my job was moving everything we do: teaching and learning, college/career counseling, meals, meeting with stakeholders, and extracurricular activities from our physical building to a remote setting per the Governor’s edict, then reorganizing so we gradually bring everything back to campus. Over the past year, how does your typical day differ from how it did prior to COVID? I now wear a mask, practice social distancing and wash my hands a lot more often. I wave to everyone instead of giving high fives. I facilitate a lot more virtual meetings, I eat alone instead of with others. Other than that, I follow my normal routine.

If you live in the area, or grew up here, what do you love about it? I grew up in Chicago, Puerto Rico and Cicero, so though I am not from the immediate community I did not grow up far at all. The North Riverside Mall and the Brookfield Zoo were places I enjoyed throughout my formative years and now, with children in my adulthood. Lights at the zoo is one of my favorite family activities!

CLARA D’ONOFRIO
GETTING TO KNOW
Owner of Brookfield Academy for Mini Musicians since 2011 How did the COVID-19 pandemic affect Brookfield Academy for Mini Musicians? In a nutshell, the pandemic basically stopped Brookfield Academy (formerly Ms. Clara’s) Mini Musicians in its tracks. We had our first week of spring classes in person, and by week two, we knew we had to move all of our classes to a virtual platform … and fast. While we knew it was not ideal for all, most families did stay enrolled for the remainder of the spring session and attended class virtually. However, over the course of the next few months, many parents found that virtual classes were not a great fit for their infants and toddlers, and unfortunately, but also understandably, our enrollment dropped by about 80 percent by the summer. As disheartening as this is as a business owner, I understand that many families enroll their infants and toddlers in our classes for socialization, community, preschool preparation, etc., and they preferred to hold off until we could be in person again. What steps did you have to take to adapt to the social distancing and safety guidelines? Currently, we are still only offering virtual classes. We did offer some great outdoor classes at the Kiwanis Park band shell in the fall that were super popular, and it was so fun to be in person for a bit! All of the families brought their own instruments, we all sat eight to 10 feet apart, and everyone 56 | 2021 Brookfield/Riverside/North Riverside Answer Book

wore masks until seated in their designated area. It did pose some challenges as kiddos are curious and do tend to want to explore, but the caregivers did a great job keeping their little ones close. Overall, these outdoor classes were a huge success and served as a reminder to keep doing whatever I can to keep my business going until we can resume our “normal” classes again. How do the children you work with respond to these changes? In regards to the virtual classes, some children respond just as well as they do with in-person classes, and some children want absolutely nothing to do with it. Young children, toddlers and even infants have their own personalities, temperaments and likes and dislikes at a very young age, and this is clear both in-person and virtually. Sometimes I’ll teach a virtual class with kiddos who all love it and participate in each and every song and activity, and an hour later, I’ll teach a class to empty Zoom squares
and hope that the dog snoozing in the corner is enjoying music class! What makes the art of music something that still deserves emphasis during these uncertain times? During this time that we have been separated from one another, music makes us feel more connected to ourselves and to each other. Young children respond to music in miraculous ways -- it can bring them joy, soothe them, energize them, engage them, and so much more. Instilling a love of music in very young children can have lifelong impacts on so many areas of their lives, way beyond the virtual or brick and mortar classroom. Simply put, music enriches the human spirit in ways that nothing else can, and for all of us at Brookfield Academy for Mini Musicians, it is our honor and pleasure to keep bringing music into children’s lives via any avenue available to us during these uncertain times.

SIGN UP TODAY FOR MUSIC AND MOVEMENT CLASSES! Imaginative, playful, and skill-building classes for kiddos from 4 months - 5 years
Parents travel to our Brookfield Academy from over 30 zip codes every week, and we are located right here in your own backyard. CONSIDER THREE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR MUSICAL COMMUNITY:
1. From socialization to language development to musicality,
our classes build both musical and non-musical skills that extend far beyond the classroom. “We have been attending music class since my son was 6 months. At first, I was skeptical if a 6 month old could get anything out of any class, but I have seen his memory, motor skills and even understanding of language increase week to week. And it seems like every week he takes something away from class that he starts doing at home.” - Karen B., Brookfield mom
2. Our skill-building curriculum consists of 200+ songs (mostly “Ms. Clara” originals!) that have been professionally arranged and recorded, and are included FREE in your tuition. “Initially, I didn't understand the impact that music class had on my son until one day we were driving and he was crying in his carseat...as soon as I started playing the songs from class, he was silent and engaged in every note. It was remarkable! I wished I had tried it sooner! It's fun, educational, they learn turn taking, musicality, and social skills.” - Jamie H., Oak Park mom
3. We offer a welcoming, playful, nonjudgmental environment that is perfect for both new and experienced parents, and it’s a wonderful place for you and your child to make new friends! “In 2014, we registered our son for music classes with Ms. Clara. For us, music class turned into a community hub where we met families that we still consider great friends. My son has also formed his most solid childhood relationships in music class. We are forever grateful for the people that this community has brought into our lives.” - Christine R., Brookfield mom
