The nearly two dozen businesses and individuals named in the wide-ranging federal search warrant served in September on the southwest suburb of Lyons have contributed more than $200,000 to political campaigns tied to Mayor Christopher Getty during the past decade.

During the same period, records show, many of those businesses -- which include a towing contractor, a local brewery, a jail food vendor and a quarry operator that neighbors village hall -- received contracts, permits, liquor licenses, tax breaks and other promises from the government Getty runs.

For the past decade, Lyons Township High School has invited area veterans, particularly ones who attended the school, to participate in their annual Veterans Day assemblies.

Each campus will host an all-school assembly in their respective fieldhouses on Monday, Nov. 11, with the South Campus assembly at 9:15 a.m. and the North Campus assembly at 12:30 p.m.

At the North Campus this year, however, school official plan to publicly roll out the school’s new Wall of Honor, located in a hallway on the lower level of the main building near the cafeteria, which honors alumni who have served in the Armed Forces.

A year in the making, the hallway display is something of a consolidation of memorials that previously had been scattered throughout the building, centralizing them in one space and augmenting them with student and alumni-produced artwork, including a large mural, and display panels showcasing yearbook and local press items regarding LTHS alumni and student involvement in, particularly, World War I and World War II. But a focal point of the Wall of Honor is a

The morning program is intended to place veterans in classrooms with students for question-and-answer sessions, following a continental breakfast and a school-wide assembly in the gymnasium.

The database, compiled from a variety of sources by the school’s Community Relations Department, includes photos and service information about war heroes like Maj. Robert E. Coulter – a B-17 bomber pilot who was killed when his plane was shot down over North Africa in World War II and for whom LaGrange’s American Legion Post is named – to peacetime veterans who also attended LTHS. “It’s in a nice high-traffic area where kids can’t help but see it, which is the plan,” said Jennifer Bialobok, the school’s community relations coordinator who led the effort to establish the veterans’ database, along with the department’s webmaster, Suzanne Andersen, and administrative assistant Robyne Recht.

“I was really pleasantly surprised when I brought this to the team and said, ‘OK, this is a new project and it’s never going to go away,’” Bialobok said. “They jumped at it.”

Because the team also handles alumni relations, they already maintained an alumni database and were able to reach out to them and get additional information from alumni about their military service and photos.

In addition, the team scoured Tabula yearbooks, the archive of the school newspaper, visited the LaGrange Historical Society and

worked with local VFWs to obtain as much information as they could.

“It was pretty multifaceted in order to get what we have,” Bialobok said.

The idea for the Wall of Honor came from teacher Mike Morrison, said Bialobok, who enlisted her team as well as art teacher Patrick Page, LTHS’ unofficial historian, who enlisted students and alumni to provide other visual elements.

Noah Denten, an LTHS graduate who is a storyboarding major at the Savannah College of Art and Design, painted the mural that depicts members of the various service branches and references to LTHS wartime contributions, like the P-51 Mustang fighter plane that students “bought” in 1944 through the sale of war bonds.

Display panels with images and text taken from old yearbooks and newspaper articles were created by LTHS graduate Natalie Kraus, now a senior at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, based on research done by Liz Becker and Megan Galbreath when they were students at the school.

Social media posts involving guns cause concern Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel is urging parents to talk to their school-age children about and review with them appropriate social media safeguards after at least three recent posts on SnapChat, at least two of them by grade school students posing with weapons, caused enough alarm that they were reported to police.

While no direct threats to any one or any school were made in the social media posts, the presence of weapons implied a threat, said Weitzel, spurring police to immediately investigate.

One social media post, by a St. Mary School student, involved the student holding what appeared to be a handgun. That weapon, said Weitzel, turned out to be a BB gun and the child was given a station adjustment. The school told police it would handle the situation administratively, Weitzel said.

On Oct. 23, Brookfield police responded to a home in that village after someone called to report that a Hauser Junior High student had posted a photo on SnapChat of several firearms.

Police described the weapons as a handgun, a hunting rifle and two shotguns. The rifle reportedly had been reported stolen out of Mississippi in 1984. Brookfield police seized the weapons after determining that their owner did not possess a valid Firearm Owner’s ID. As for posts involving high school students, Weitzel, described them as “inappro-

priate” but not directly threatening.

“We’re still investigating social media posts related to the high school,” Weitzel said.

On Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m., Riverside-Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Road, will host a Community Safety Forum that is open to the public to discuss safety topics and trends.

The event will feature Weitzel as well as Brookfield Police Chief Edward Petrak, RBHS School Safety Liaison Officer Lane Niemann and RBHS Assistant principal Dave Mannon.

ATM burglary spree continues A spree of burglaries in the western suburbs in the past month involving either the theft or attempted theft of ATMs continued last week in Riverside.

On Nov. 2 at about 2:55 a.m., Riverside police responded to the Citgo gas station at 539 Longcommon Road after receiving a report of an active burglar alarm there. When officers arrived, they observed the glass front door shattered.

Just inside the door, the top part of the ATM was knocked off the base, but still attached.

The owners arrived shortly after and told police that except for the damaged ATM, everything inside the store was accounted for.

The ATM couldn’t be stolen, because it was bolted to the floor, according to police.

After clearing the scene, police reported that an ATM was stolen from a gas station in Cicero shortly after the Riverside incident.

Police order remedies for‘vicious’ dog The owners of a German shepherd declared “vicious” by Riverside’s police chief have agreed to muzzle the dog at all times when in public and take measures to secure their property after the dog got away from the home on the evening of Oct. 25 and acted aggressively.

The dog was reported wandering in and out of yards in the 300 and 400 blocks of Uvedale Road, where a 911 caller said he feared for his safety due to the dog’s aggressiveness.

When police arrived, an officer also reported that the dog took an aggressive stance, growling and barking at him. They also recognized the dog from prior contacts and located the owner, who said the 80-pound dog had pushed past her and was unable to control it as it ran out the door.

The dog continued to charge pedestrians walking in the area and even acted aggressively toward its owner, according to police, who eventually used a Taser to subdue the dog.

ing fencing the property and using an electronic dog collar. The owner was also given several citations for having a dog running at large.

Burglary foiled

Brookfield police responded to a residence in the 8900 block of Gerritsen Avenue at 5:45 a.m. on Nov. 4 after a resident called to report a burglary in progress.

The victim told police that someone wearing a black jacket and white and gray hoodie had broken into her apartment and attempted to steal her TV. When the offender saw the victim coming into the room, he reportedly put down the TV and then threw a wooden hanger at the victim, striking her on the right wrist.

Police observed that front door chain lock was broken off the door panel. The victim stated she was unsure if she locked the door the previous night.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Oct. 28-Nov. 4 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime.

Stumbling blocks remain for D96 at Hollywood School No solutions yet to solve parking shortage if addition is built

About 50 people attended a community forum at Hollywood School last week held by the Riverside Elementary School District 96 Board of Education to discuss ways to solve space issues at the cramped Hollywood School campus.

The school board wanted to get public input as it considers an offer from the Hollywood Citizens Association (HCA) to lease roughly 10,000 square feet of land west and north of the Hollywood House to the school district for the token cost of $1 a year.

The district could use that land to build a new playground to replace and probably enlarge the existing playground which now sits on HCA owned land just between Hollywood House and the school.

At the forum, which was technically a special meeting of the District 96 school board, Superintendent Martha Ryan-Toye presented the district’s plan to build an approximately 1,000-square-feet multipurpose room on the back end of Hollywood School.

The addition would probably result in the loss of around 10 parking spots in the school’s parking lot, leaving only 12 spaces for teachers and staff.

District officials are looking for ways to replace the parking spaces that would be lost by building the addition.

house structure and use the land for a larger playground and expanded parking.

The HCA rejected that offer and instead offered to lease land north and west of the house to the district for use as a playground.

Ryan-Toye assured anxious residents that tearing down the Hollywood House is no longer an option.

“It’s not our goal to tear down the house,” Ryan-Toye said.

Ryan-Toye and school board President Dan Hunt said after the meeting that they appreciated the community input.

“We will consider all of this and eventually respond to the HCA,” Ryan-Toye said.

Hunt said that the meeting was useful.

“We had a lot of people that are understanding some of the problems we have with the offer that’s currently on the table, and are sympathetic to that, and we definitely appreciate that,” Hunt said.

The school board will have to make up its mind fairly soon if they want to build the addition and a new playground next summer.

“I don’t know at which point summer of 2020 slips out of our hands as an option, but we’re getting near to that,” Ryan-Toye said.

Some called upon the school district to just accept the HCA’s offer.

“It feels like the HCA is a very willing partner,” said Hollywood resident Matt Johnson near the end of the meeting. “They have in the past and present essentially donated use of land, their land, for the use of the Hollywood School community.

“They have once again offered the use of their land in a nearly free capacity. It’s clear that this is not the land the board wants, but, not to be rude, beggars can’t be choosers.”

Gonzo Schexnayder, the president of the HCA, said that he didn’t hear much new during the meeting.

“I think it was representative of everything the HCA has been hearing for weeks,” Schexnayder said. “There’s an option there to work with the school board and provide a better playground without having to sell the land or tear down the house.”

Brookfield ballfield fee proposal get pushback Some trustees bristle at charging Little League anything

Brookfield Recreation Director Stevie Ferrari and Village Manager Timothy Wiberg got an up-close look at just how much clout the village’s youth baseball leagues wield last week after getting push back on a proposed field-use policy that included charging fees for the privilege and signing formal agreements outlining each party’s responsibilities.

The fees would, Ferrari told trustees at their committee of the whole meeting on Oct. 28, provide critical revenue for the Department of Parks and Recreation for park improvements.

She proposed a tiered structure for fees, charging less for power users like Little League with strong community ties and more to those without such strong community ties or for-profit organizations. The proposed fees ranged between $10 and $40 per hour per field.

The structure also would differentiate organizations – some of whom provide significant financial and maintenance help, like Little League, and those who provide nothing.

Designating groups as “affiliate,” “community” and “for-profit,” Ferrari said, would also protect groups that serve mostly Brookfield residents, by giving them priority for field use, Ferrari, who was hired in 2018 as the village’s first recreation director in more than a decade, estimated that such a structure would result in the village receiving between $20,000 and $30,000 annually. Those funds, she said, would be reinvested into the village’s parks for things like basketball court resurfacing, fence repair, playground

equipment and more.

Through the end of September, said Ferrari, her department had spent $200,000 on park maintenance in 2019. In addition, Brookfield’s Open Space Plan, adopted by the village board in 2015, identifies more than $2 million in park improvements to be done in the next five years.

“We have been able to implement little of those projects, and that is because we don’t have the funds available to do so and we have no system in place currently that would allow us to contribute to any of those costs,” Ferrari said.

After a nearly two-hour discussion at the village board’s Oct. 28 committee of the whole meeting, Ferrari and Wiberg were directed by the village board to meet with representatives of the youth athletic organizations, like Brookfield Little League, Western Conference Baseball and AYSO Soccer, to find a way forward.

While both village officials and youth league representatives who spoke at the Oct. 28 meeting appeared to be on board with formal agreements stating which party was responsible for what, there wasn’t so much agreement on the proposed fee structure or whether organizations like Brookfield Little League should have to pay any fee at all.

“What [Little League] has done and what they’ve created in this town goes above and beyond programming,” said Trustee Brian Conroy. “What they give, we cannot enhance. We do not have the manpower, the facilities or the capability of doing anything to enhance that program.”

Conroy said the village could not match the maintenance level the league provides for the ballfields or the number of hours its volunteers work on them.

“In my mind, we’re indebted to Little

League for creating this program,” Conroy said. “There’s a lot of other low-hanging fruit we can pursue as far as creating programs and fees.”

If Little Leagues use of the field was producing expenses that the village wasn’t recouping, Conroy said he’d be “all for talking to them and trying to get that.”

“To me the league is an extension of the village,” Conroy said. “I think to charge them anything is wrong.”

The strength of Conroy’s opposition to charging Brookfield Little League a fielduse fee underlines the power the league wields when it comes to the baseball fields at Kiwanis and Ehlert parks.

Since the late 1950s, the leagues have been given virtual control of the fields. In exchange for the leagues maintaining and improving the fields, they expect the village to largely leave them alone.

Dave Campbell, treasurer of Brookfield Little League, told trustees on Oct. 28 that over the past three seasons the league has spent more than $76,500 on field maintenance, including fence repairs.

While Campbell said he welcomed a formal agreement laying out responsibilities, charging the league a field-use fee on top of that, Campbell said, “felt like this was a tax on Little League.”

Ferrari pointed out that it is not uncommon for village recreation departments to charge organizations a fee to use villageowned fields. Brookfield stands virtually alone in not assessing any field-use fee to organizations like Little League.

Riverside, for example, charges community organizations $25 for every two-hour block of time and keeps a separate field maintenance agreement with Little League, which pays for field renovation and special

projects.

North Riverside, too, charges groups in Little League $25 an hour for field use. And while the village handles field repair, maintenance and supplies, the local Little League “has paid an estimated $10,000 over the past three years to the department,” according to Ferrari.

While it’s unclear whether the village board will allow the recreation department to implement a policy that seeks to charge a fee to groups using its fields, Wiberg said in a separate interview that the Department of Parks and Recreation seeking to recoup costs via fees “makes absolute sense to me.”

In addition to ongoing park maintenance, the village of Brookfield has spent millions of dollars in the past 15 years to expand and improve its parks, in part with the help of open space grants, but also using hundreds of thousands of dollars in village funds.

In 2004, it spent $2.5 million to purchase the eastern portion of Ehlert Park from Lyons-Brookfield School District 103 and then spend almost $2 million more over the subsequent decade improving the fields.

A major improvement to Kiwanis Park cost $560,000 and the village is also seeking a state grant to help fund a major overhaul of Candy Cane Park. Those improvements benefit all Brookfielders, said Wiberg, who likened the field-use fee to a building permit. Even though homeowners pay for improvements to their houses, they also pay building permit fees to cover the costs for inspections and plan review.

“We should be getting a fee. That’s how municipal governments are run,” Wiberg said. “The responsibility I have is to operate a recreation department that fulfills the needs of residents, and we don’t have enough revenue to do that.”

S.E. Gross Middle School in Brookfield earned its second straight “exemplary” ranking on its 2019 school report card issued last week by the Illinois State Board of Education, while Brook Park School in LaGrange Park fell from exemplary to “commendable” this year.

An exemplary rating means S.E. Gross was in the top 10 percent of all public schools in Illinois and that no student sub-

groups ranked in the bottom 5 percent in the state. A commendable rating means that no student group ranked in the bottom 5 percent, but overall performance was not in the top 10 percent.

About 75 percent of the public schools in the state, including all Landmark area school not receiving an exemplary rating, were rated as commendable.

The ratings are based on a formula that includes students’ performance last spring on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness Test which has replaced, but is similar to,

the old PARCC Exam.

At Gross School, 66 percent of students met or exceeded the state standards in English Language Arts (ELA), an increase of 9 percentage points from 2017-18.

Forty-one percent of Gross students made the grade in math, an increase of one point, while 74 percent of Gross students were rated proficient in science.

At Brook Park, performance in ELA remained the same as last year, with 56 percent of students making the mark. In math, 37 percent of Brook Park students met or ex-

ceeded state standards, up two points from 35 percent a year ago. Seventy-six percent of Brook Park students were rated as proficient in science.

Three D96 schools named ‘exemplary’ by state Hauser, Blythe, Hollywood all rank in state’s top 10%

Three Riverside District 96 schools were rated “exemplary” by the Illinois State Board of Education in the 2018-19 Illinois School Report Cards that were released last week.

L.J. Hauser Junior High School, Blythe Park Elementary School and Hollywood School all receive received the coveted ranking, which means that they were among the top 10 percent of all public schools in Illinois and that no student subgroups ranked in the bottom 5 percent in the state.

It was the second straight exemplary ranking in the two years that the new rating system for Hauser and Hollywood. Blythe Park School earned the exemplary ranking for the first time this year.

The schools in District 96 that did not receive the exemplary ranking were rated as “commendable,” which means that no student group ranked in the bottom 5 percent, but that overall performance was not in the top 10 percent of all public schools in the state.

About 75 percent of the public schools in the state were rated as commendable.

The ratings are based on a formula that includes students’ performance on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness Test which has replaced, but is similar to, the old PARCC Exam.

Fifty percent of a school score’s score is determined by student improvement over the course of the year in math and reading, while 15 percent of the score is determined by raw proficiency in math and reading.

Komarek Superintendent Brian Ganan said that the drop in math scores was not surprising, because last year a different math curriculum was used in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

“It’s a total different way in teaching and learning, so I’m not shocked that the scores went down 2 percent,” Ganan said.

At Hauser, 75 percent of students met or exceeded state standards in ELA while 55 percent did so in math and 81 percent were rated as proficient in science.

With the search for Brookfield resident Erica Thompson and her missing car now in its second month, a former village resident has stepped up to help spread the word about her disappearance.

Ed Marcin, who lived in the Hollywood section of Brookfield for 63 years before moving to northwest Indiana two years ago, reached out to Police Chief Edward Petrak recently, offering to place a missing person display featuring Thompson’s photo and a phone number to report information on billboards along expressways and major streets throughout the Chicago suburbs.

“We created something very simple, so it will be easy to understand as people pass the digital signs,” said Marcin.

“We hope this helps the Brookfield Police Department find Erica.”

The yellow and black display simply states “Missing: Erica Thompson” along with her photo and instructs anyone with information to contact Brookfield police at 708-2444862, which is the police department’s anonymous tip line.

Messages are displayed for 10 seconds and rotate once every 80 seconds.

“I think it’ll keep the public’s mind on our case,” Petrak said. “Hopefully, one of those people sees it and it sends them back to the story, where maybe they remember the car and it leads to a tip to us.”

The message was already in rotation as of Nov. 1, according to Marcin, on a billboard on the north side of I-55 just east of LaGrange Road in Hodgkins, one of the places where Thompson’s phone traveled to the morning after she was last seen.

Messages on the system’s other billboards ought to start running as early as this week and will continue through the end of 2019.

“It goes to the end of the year and then we’ll see if we need to extend it,” Marcin said. “We’re committed to help them.”

federal programs used census data to divvy up $675 billion in federal funding, $20 billion of which came back to Illinois in the form of formula grants based on population counts.

The programs that benefit from such funding include Medicare and Medicaid, Head Start early childhood development programs, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as well as a variety of road improvement and other infrastructure initiatives.

People can begin self-reporting information to the U.S. Census Bureau beginning March 13, 2020 through the end of August.

For the first time ever, people can enter information online or via telephone in addition to mailing in forms.

While the census reporting is still months away, there are efforts underway at the local level to begin reaching out to residents, especially hard-to-count populations. The village of Brookfield has established a Complete Count Committee, which includes village officials, church and school leaders, social service agencies and media partners, including the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark.

The committee is scheduled to meet for the second time on Nov. 13 to discuss how the committee can identify partners, engage the community and spread awareness. “The village is committed to working with the Complete Count Committee to ensure that an accurate count is made for all individuals residing in Brookfield,� said Brookfield Assistant Village Manager George Issakoo, who attended the Nov. 4 forum in the auditorium of the Riverside Township Hall.

Riverside Village President Ben Sells also attended the session. “We plan to use resources like those offered at today’s event, in addition to creative collaboration with our partner agencies on the committee, to raise awareness about the census and its importance,� Issakoo said.

Top elected officials in Illinois visited Riverside on Nov. 4 to rally local governments, grassroots organizations and residents to raise awareness of the upcoming 2020 Census and advocate for an accurate count in order to keep federal dollars flowing to the state and maintain representation in Congress.

U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Springfield) and Congressman Jesus “Chuyâ€? Garcia (D-4th) said the state stands to lose up to $18,000 in federal aid over the next decade for each person who isn’t counted during next year’s census. “The money that’s coming back here depends on census data,â€? said Durbin, who was making his first official appearance in the Riverside-Brookfield area since 2013. “It also has a tremendous impact on our congressional delegation. ‌ It’s not uncommon for us to lose one congressional district every 10 years.â€?

Both Durbin and Garcia said officials at the state and local levels need to urge participation in the census next year after attempts

by President Donald Trump’s administration to place a citizenship question on the census.

The move was seen as a way to drive down participation by immigrants and undocumented residents and lower counts in urban areas like Chicago and its suburbs, where there are large Latino populations, who already are considered hard-to-count populations.

While the federal courts ruled out the citizenship question, Garcia said that effort did damage. “We have to do a lot of work to overcome all the fear and confusion that that effort has caused,� Garcia said. “It’s causing many people to rethink whether they will participate in the census.�

According to Garcia, the first MexicanAmerican congressman elected in Illinois, local and state officials need to work to ensure immigrant communities trust that their information will remain confidential and safe. “They need as many trusted messengers as possible to rebuild the confidence and to mobilize the communities into participating,�

Garcia said. “Our young children were one of the most uncounted groups 10 years ago.�

According to Garcia, more than 1 million children were not counted in 2010 nationwide, including about 150,000 in Illinois. “That is nearly $2.7 million that was lost in services to our communities,� Garcia said, who added Cook County had the fourth largest undercount in the U.S in 2010. “We

Riverside Township celebrates hall’s 125th birthday Masons rededicate cornerstone laid in November 1894

The only disappointment was that the time capsule, sealed behind the cornerstone in 1894, had been largely destroyed by water that had seeped into the chamber over the decades.

“I didn’t want a Geraldo’s vault situation,” said Wilt, referring to the infamous 1986 TV special built around Geraldo Rivera opening up what he purported to be Al Capone’s secret vault. The space turned out to be empty.

It turned out that the tin or lead time capsule box from 1894 has been reduced to corroded fragments and its largely paper contents were wadded into a ball. Despite being told they were a complete loss, apart from a set of coins dating from between 1853 and 1894, Wilt personally teased out several items.

Among the items partially rescued were records of township and village leadership, pages from the Riverside Record newspaper, including a short notice about the then stillto-come cornerstone dedication event.

The time capsule also included business

cards of township and village officials, the architect and his draftsmen and a train schedule from the date of the ceremony. Several of the items, including the box shards and some of the papers are on display in a case in the lobby of the Riverside Township Hall, just outside the township office.

A new time capsule is scheduled to be sealed behind the cornerstone, which is located at the northeast corner of the building, near the police department. This capsule, it is hoped, will be a little more durable. The stainless steel cylinder, to be opened in 75 years on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the cornerstone ceremony, contains items similar to the original – a 2019 proof set of coins, business cards of township officials, winning essays by local school children related to the 125th anniversary event and items associated with the Masons.

Condon in his message to parishioners published in the Nov. 3 parish bulletin. “However, the new name will help us appreciate that we are one community united in Christ for the ministry of the Gospel.”

Condon, who did not respond to multiple messages from the Landmark, also used the Nov. 3 bulletin to emphasize that the naming of the new parish marked a new beginning, not an end.

“I understand why many wished to keep the name they have known for years, but our new name speaks to the reality of our communities uniting to work for a better future,” Condon wrote.

One of the first new, unified ministries, Condon announced, would be the participation of the newly combined Youth Ministry in the Appalachia Service Project, where

kids under the direction of two adult leaders spend a week helping the poor in Appalachia by repairing homes.

St. Louise Parish had been participating in the service project for several years and now it’s also open to those who formerly were part of St. Barbara Parish.

“This is a great way for our teens and adults of Holy Guardian Angels to get to know each other,” Condon wrote in the Nov. 3 bulletin.

Cardinal Blase Cupich decreed the new name for the parish after being sent a list of three finalists chosen by parishioners during a four-month period earlier this year. The top three names were Holy Guardian Angels, St. Clare of Assisi and St. Mary Magdalene.

Cupich selected the Holy Guardian Angels, which had been the runaway winner among parishioners.

St. Barbara, St. Louise churches to remain as worship sites

Oct. 21 was a big day for parishioners of the newly merged Sts. Barbara and Louise de Marillac Parish, which serves Roman Catholics in Brookfield and the northeast part of LaGrange Park, one they’d been waiting for since July when the Chicago Archdiocese officially made them a single entity with two worship sites.

It was the day the parish assumed its new

identity as Holy Guardian Angels Parish.

In a sense, the formal name change represented the end of a long journey, which began about two years ago as part of the Chicago Archdiocese’s first wave of parish consolidations under its Renew My Church initiative.

It’s been more than a year since the archdiocese announced that St. Barbara and St. Louise de Marillac would form a new parish that maintained a pair of worship sites under the guidance of a single pastor.

The newly unified parish, under its temporary name St. Barbara-St. Louise de Marillac Parish, began its journey on July 1, with Rev. Denis Condon – formerly pastor of St. Louise de Marillac – at the helm. He continues on as pastor of Holy Guardian Angels Parish.

“Our name will probably take us some time to get used to. That is normal,” said

‘This is insanity’ from page 1 Rick Heidner, an embattled video gambling magnate who has contracted with Lyons to fix up a long-vacant strip mall on Ogden Avenue, the village’s main drag.

Heidner and his video gambling company, Gold Rush Amusements Inc., made headlines last month when his plans to develop a combination horse track and casino in Tinley Park were dashed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker following news reports of his business dealings with a banking family tied to the mob, as well as a convicted bookie.

Getty and the village board he controls promised the strip mall’s original developer $90,000 in taxpayer money, a benefit that went to Heidner when he took over.

He also promised Heidner future property tax breaks, lucrative liquor licenses at the site and village support for video gambling there in exchange for taking over and developing the project near village hall.

On Oct. 1, five days after federal agents executed their search warrant, the village issued a fire alarm permit for one of the buildings in the strip mall that identified Heidner’s property management firm as the owner.

In late September, federal agents raided and seized records from Lyons Village Hall and Getty’s private insurance business.

Agents also raided the village hall in the neighboring suburb of McCook and also visited Summit’s village hall.

The sprawling federal corruption investigation is ongoing. No one in Lyons has been charged and Lyons officials declined to comment for this story. Getty did not respond to multiple messages seeking comment.

Heidner’s name appeared on federal records that were issued for the raids in Lyons and McCook, as well as an earlier raid on the Cicero and Springfield offices of state Sen. Martin Sandoval, whose district includes the two suburbs, as well as part of Riverside.

According to documents, federal agents left their raid of Lyons Village Hall with “assorted loan papers and notes” regarding Heidner.

“I haven’t done anything. This is insanity,” Heidner said in a telephone interview with

Heidner lamented the Lyons strip mall deal, saying it “has not been a great deal for me. I did everyone a favor.”

Still, the deal stands to be lucrative for Heidner.

The terms of a 2017 agreement with Lyons stipulates the village will pay all property taxes at the site above $50,000 per year. The property taxes on Heidner’s strip mall last year totaled $67,763, meaning the village’s portion was $17,763. The village has not yet provided records of payments and tax savings requested by the BGA. Once the building fills with tenants, the taxes will likely rise.

The village also promised to allow liquor licenses and video gambling, which would likely increase revenue for Heidner’s slot machine empire. The contract stipulates Heidner’s plans for the 6,000-square-foot building included a restaurant and video gambling cafe, although Heidner now says there will be no cafe.

Lyons officials spent $140,000 to terminate a previous contract with another developer for the strip mall before approving the plan that allowed Heidner’s firm to take over.

As of last week, the mall remained empty, but a Mexican restaurant was advertised in a store window for one of the spots. A developer of the restaurant, Joseph A. Hurt, has long ties to Getty and his name is also included in the federal subpoena, records show.

Hurt is a donor to Getty and is also listed as the chairman of a political action committee that funded a Getty-backed slate of Lyons school board candidates in April.

Hurt did not return telephone messages.

Recent election records show Heidner and his firms, including Gold Rush, have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians statewide, including at least $4,550 to funds controlled by Getty and $19,350 to McCook Mayor Jeff Tobolski.

Yet only a small part of Gold Rush’s gambling empire operates in Lyons and McCook, about 40 machines at eight locations, including a strip club and a bar, both in McCook,

f last week’s reaction to a proposal by Brookfield’s new recreation director to charge organizations for use of village-owned ballfields is any indication, there’s unlikely to be any such policy coming in the near future.

But the village may begin to break the strong control organizations like Brookfield Little League and Western Conference Baseball exercise over those ballfields with a parallel proposal to have leagues sign agreements outlining their responsibilities as well as the village’s.

Recreation Director Stevie Ferrari and Village Manager Timothy Wiberg were both taken aback at how much clout the leagues have when it comes to control of those fields.

For decades the village ceded virtual control of the ballfields to the leagues, which in exchange maintained and improved them – keeping them off limits to anyone else who wanted to use them.

The argument that such an arrangement makes sense, however, fails when you look at how other municipalities work together with similar leagues. Riverside charges Little League for use of village-owned fields, and Little League continues to contribute volunteer maintenance and money for field renovation.

While North Riverside handles routine field maintenance, the Little League there also contributes money that goes toward field improvements above and beyond that.

Put another way, the volunteer spirit of Brookfield Little League, while wholly commendable and appreciated, isn’t unique. And yet, in other towns, the local Little Leagues very clearly don’t assume any actual ownership of the property.

The ballfields, like the rest of the park land in Brookfield, is owned by the village, which has pumped millions of dollars through the years into its parks – buying property and improving it for the benefit of all Brookfield residents.

The village needs to be able to sensibly outline how and when park land can be used by outside organizations – whose numbers continue to grow and whose dedication to maintaining and paying for improvements to the parks is not equal.

Certainly a tiered fee structure (even some sort of flat rate) makes sense and provides a way for the village to recoup its costs for providing and maintaining the parks around the fields, actions the leagues also benefit from.

At the very least, the village and its partner organizations like Brookfield Little League need to formalize who is responsible for what and making clear just who controls what aspects of the operation.

It’s probably going to take some time for the village to begin reasserting its ownership of the village’s ballfields given the history and still strong emotional attachments to doing things the way they’ve always been done.

But, with new leadership inside village hall, with personal involvement in “the old way” standing in the way, now is the right time to begin moving Brookfield Parks and Rec into the 21st century.

Banking on Riverside

T

here was a time when there were several banks in Riverside, but now just two remain -- Riverside Bank and First American Bank. I get confused, because what’s now First American Bank for many years was known locally as Riverside Bank, though it was officially called First National Bank of Riverside.

Located on Riverside Road, which is what Longcommon Road becomes after you cross the tracks, (have I confused you yet? I will), First American Bank is located in what’s known as the Driver Block, after an early Riverside resident who built it.

The facade and the interior have undergone some changes over the years -- who can forget the big change with automatic drive-thru.

Prior to that you brought in your little brown passbook inside with you, and all transactions were performed by the teller. I never wrote in my passbook and don’t know if I was allowed to -- I think it was a Catholic thing, like how you couldn’t touch the host.

For many years, First National Bank of Riverside was the only bank in town. But, over time more banking establishments opened in Riverside, including Riverside Savings and Loan, operated by the Choutka brothers. The building went under various banking establishments until finally the last bank shuttered their doors leaving a vacancy on Harlem and Burlington.

Marshall Savings and Loan located at Harlem and

Ogden, which came to Riverside in the late 1950s and was taken over by the state in 1965, was another story, well chronicled by Bob Uphues in the Landmark. It was not too long ago we said goodbye to PNC Bank on Burlington after undergoing many different owners.

Riverside Bank on Burlington Street was the former site of Riverside Electric, originally owned by Ted and Mable Osberg.

The building remained an electric store under different ownership until it became a gift shop whose original owner was Dolores Earle.

Riverside Bank has become very established within the community and has become a welcome participant in many of the happenings within the village. It is always nice to go in do your transaction, have a cookie (or two), a cup of coffee and read the Landmark while sitting by the fireplace. Have you ever gone in and not seen someone you know?

So from five banking establishments, Riverside is down to two banks and I don’t think they are going anywhere. So shop local and bank local.

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet kept the goblins from seeking their treats. On Halloween, some 97 trickor-treaters made their way to the Kosey house.

John D. Reyns, 65, of Riverside, died peacefully on Oct. 24, 2019.

Born on June 18, 1954 on Chicago’s South Side to Ann and Paul Reyns, he was raised in Riverside where he attended RiversideBrookfield High

School.

After graduating from Bradley University, Mr. Reyns worked at Kemper before rejoining his father and working for Reyns Transformer in Brookfield, where he would serve as president for over 25 years.

In 1985, he welcomed his only child, John Paul, into the world. Between his love for music and the water, John’s life was filled with joy. A certified scuba diver and sailor, as well as a habitual swimmer, the only time John was happier than when he was in the water was while listening to the Grateful Dead or Jimmy Buffett.

Mr. Reyns is survived by his son and his granddaughter, Charlotte Ann Reyns.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 8 at Irish Times, 8869 Burlington Ave. in Brookfield.

parency and promote greater participation among Riverside residents.

“As many people who want to get involved, should get involved,” said the organization’s new chairman, Kevin Smith, a former twoterm trustee who ran as an independent for his first run in 2001 and then as a candidate slated by the Caucus in 2005. “Hopefully, we can do away with the mystery of village government and how you get involved in village government.”

In January, on a date to be determined, the Caucus will reintroduce itself to the community at a public meet-and-greet.

“It’ll be informal, a way to get people meeting as neighbors to see it’s not something all that mysterious,” Smith said.

That will be followed in March by a general education meeting on how village government operates. Later in spring 2020, the Caucus will begin its efforts to recruit candidates for the 2021 election for village president and three trustees.

Smith leads a new Riverside Community Caucus board of directors who are a mix of those with years of experience and those newer to the scene. Joining him on the board are Sandy Briolat, vice chair; Jay Van Cura, treasurer; Mary Cerrone, secretary; Kimber Coombes, correspondence coordinator; and Amy Bilow, membership coordinator.

The most important change in the bylaws concerns the way the Caucus nominates candidates for village president and trustee.

Previously, Caucus members selected a nominating committee of up to 12 people, who interviewed and recommended candidates for village office. The fact that such a small group of people were charged with vetting candidates – behind closed doors -drew ample criticism and some resentment.

“We really wanted to make the process more transparent,” said Jill Mateo, most recently the Caucus vice chair who was a member of a steering committee created after the dissolution of the political action committee to review and revise the organization’s bylaws. “With the nominating committee unknown to the general public, the process was unclear.”

The new bylaws replace the nominating committee with a recruiting committee of between eight and 14 members who will be drawn from six different areas of the village in order to get even representation.

The members of the recruiting committee are directed in the bylaws to “encourage residents in their areas to consider running for office, interview with the committee and submit a candidate sheet/application.”

People seeking the endorsement of the Caucus will then be invited to participate in a public forum where they can present themselves not to just the Caucus but the general public.

“We’ll have a public forum with moderated questions, out in the open,” Mateo said.

After the forum, Caucus members will meet privately to discuss and vote on its preferred candidates using a ranked-choice method.

Mateo said in addition to the candidate recruitment and forums every two years, the Caucus will also strive to host other public events to make the organization a visible presence in town and recruit dues-paying members.

It costs $25 a year to belong to the Caucus, and the only requirements are that members be Riverside residents who are registered to vote, attend Caucus meetings, support the public forums and be engaged in the election process.

“All we really want is some kind of commitment to get this moving,” Smith said.

Once the Caucus nominates candidates, it will be up to the candidates whether they want to form a slate or a political action committee in order to raise funds for a campaign. The Riverside Community Caucus, which cannot create a new PAC after being forced to dissolve its own last year in the face of fines from the Illinois Board of Elections totaling $17,275, is out of the fundraising business.

“As far as [raising money for] a campaign, it’s up to the candidates,” Mateo said. “We’re not going to register as a committee.”

While that could create a scenario that puts Caucus-endorsed candidates at a disadvantage in a partisan race against a wellfunded opponent or slate, Smith said the Caucus’ new, more open approach is intended to head off such races.

“These are few and far between and are generated by what we’re trying to get away from – hot-button issues,” Smith said. “If we can get that out we won’t have those great conflagrations. Time will tell if it can work out that way.”

The last time Riverside voters saw a contested election for village office came in 2009, in the midst of a national financial meltdown and following a controversial look into possibly creating a TIF district in downtown Riverside and a long and equally controversial planning process that ended with the construction of the Village Center development at Longcommon and East Burlington Street.

While hot-button issues can inspire some to run for office, said Smith, what the Caucus wants to help potential candidates understand is that village government is more often mundane.

National political issues rarely make their way to the village board, Smith said, adding, “It’s rather how do we pay police, find a way to give the village manager a raise and get the streets paved. It’s all very local.

“Running for the village board is a stepping stone to nowhere.”

All of last week, Fenwick’s football team found itself surrounded by the unknown. The status of the first round of the playoffs was up in the air due to the CPS teacher strikes. Then the team lost its head coach due to his involvement in a 2016 IHSA violation.

Despite the odds, Fenwick (6-4) pulled off a major upset over undefeated Walter Payton High School (8-1-1) in a 20-17 thriller on Nov. 2.

“All week, [the players] have shown their will to overcome adversity,” said interim head coach Titcus Pettigrew. “This has been a real up-and-down week for them as well as the coaches, [athletic director], principal. … We have been through a lot. But these kids showed grit and did everything you could ask from a 15- or 16-yearold young man.”

First Quarter: After both teams failed to score on their opening offensive possessions, Payton used a 12-play drive to take an early 7-0 lead. In a two-back set out of shotgun, WPHS quarterback Sage Shindler threw a screen to running back Damian Goodman who broke a tackle at the line, weaved his way to the sideline, broke a tackle at the seven-yard line, and found the endzone with 2:52 left in the first.

Fenwick responded with a relentless attack from the run game.

Running back Danny Kent had his way with the Grizzlies’ defense and put his team in position to score on the 1-yard line as time ran out in the first quarter.

Second Quarter: After a 1-yard loss on first and goal, quarterback Kaden Cobb faked a draw play out of the shotgun, moved to his left, and dove into the endzone untouched to even the score.

The defense shut down the Grizzlies’ offense on the next possession to force another three and out.

After a meager 18-yard punt put Fenwick at the their own 43yard line, Cobb completed three of four pass attempts on the Friars’ seven-play scoring drive. On 3rd and 8 at the Grizzlies’ 27 yard line, Walter Payton’s defense forced Cobb to move to his right.

Wide receiver Brian Moore adjusted his route and Cobb throwing across his body, hit Moore by the right pylon for a 27-yard touchdown.

With less than two minutes left in the half, WPHS moved the ball to the 35 yard line. On 4th and 6, the Friars’ defensive line brought heavy pressure on Shindler. In one-on-one coverage, he threw a lob to the endzone, but it was batted down by Fenwick DB Solomon Singleton.

Fenwick threatened to score again with 1:47 left in the half when Cobb threw an erratic pass at the WPHS 32-yard line to avoid getting hit. It was intercepted at the 22-yard line but the Grizzlies didn’t have time to capitalize on the turnover.

Gene Nudo is no longer the varsity head football coach at Fenwick High School. A spokesman for the school confirmed on Nov. 1 that Nudo has stepped down after he allowed convicted sex offender Frank Battaglia to assist him during the 2016 season.

The school sent this statement to Wednesday Journal on Nov. 1: “Traditionally, Fenwick High School does not comment on personnel matters. However, circumstances involving the termination of head football coach Gene Nudo’s tenure call for some clarity.

“Fenwick has strict protocols in place that must be followed before anyone can serve as a coach or volunteer coach. These protocols require that any employee, teacher, coach or volunteer, who is involved with students in any capacity must undergo a background check and participate in Virtus training, among other things. Earlier this week, Fenwick received information that in 2016 Coach Nudo allowed someone whom he had coached with in the past to attend a couple of football practices and to assist Coach Nudo on the sidelines during some games at the end of the season. When this was confirmed by the school and was brought to Coach Nudo’s attention, he acknowledged that he did not alert Fenwick that he was doing this and did not follow Fenwick’s important policies and procedures. At that time, Coach Nudo agreed to step down immediately.

“Fenwick has no evidence of any wrongdoing by the person Coach Nudo brought in while he was at Fenwick nor any evidence of any other violation of Fenwick’s rules by Coach Nudo.

OPRF volleyball takes down LTHS in revenge match Huskies dominate Lions in two-set win

Before the IHSA regional final match on Oct. 31 against Lyons Township High School, the Oak Park and River Forest varsity volleyball team didn’t look like a team about to face a conference foe who had taken them down in the first two meetings in the regular season. They brought in-game energy during warmups, ready to seek revenge and keep their season alive.

They did just that as the team bulldozed the Lions in a quick two-set win at Lyons Township High School (25-14, 25-14).

“We came out with that energy right away, which is exactly what we wanted to do,” said OPRF’s head coach Kelly Collins. “We talked about in practice coming out from the start with a sense of urgency. We knew exactly what they were going to do … there weren’t any surprises and we needed to do it from the very beginning and our kids did an excellent job with that.”

The Huskies came out of the gate with a 12-7 lead that was paced by the senior Natalie Chizzo, who has committed to play volleyball at Northwestern University next year. LTHS called a timeout to try regroup after a few OPRF points were caused by miscommunication on the Lions’ end.

“We didn’t show up tonight,” said LTHS head coach Jill Keeve. “Defensively, we talked and scouted, and we knew the right things to do but we weren’t able to do those things during game-time. I think that’s what gave [OPRF] the advantage because we became so mental and frustrated.”

After the Lions brought the deficit down to 14-10, the Huskies went on an 11-4 run that highlighted by the high-powered OPRF offense finding holes in the defense. The Huskies took the set 25-14.

“I feel like our offense is unstoppable when we pass well and run that up-tempo offense,” said Collins. “We have a lot of different options whether it is coming from the outside, either pin, and definitely the middle.”

In the second set, LTHS jumped out to a 2-0 lead after senior Patti Cesarni started things off with a kill and Chizzo hit her next attempt out of bounds. Both teams would trade points before the Lions found themselves trailing 8-9.

The Huskies gained back their momentum on the next point when Chizzo hit a bullet into the left corner of the court.

The Lions had committed to defending the front row before Chizzo’s attack which set up the open space for her to make her move.

11-19 lead. Keeve used one more timeout but at that point the team’s energy was lost.

“At the end of the day, they came out to play and wanted it more than us,” said Cesarni. “It’s unfortunate I have to say it that way but that’s just how it went. They did a bunch of film on us, we did a bunch of film on them but they came out ready to win.”

OPRF finished off the match winning six of the next seven points to move on to the IHSA sectional round.

“We were hyped up on the bus beforehand since knew that was a good team over there,” said Chizzo. “We lost to them the first two games of the season but this time around I feel like we found our identity as a team.”

LTHS finishes its season with a 22-13 record.

Both teams exchanged punts until WPHS moved the ball to the Friars’ 9-yard line with 2:40 left. The Grizzlies got a 24-yard field goal, but fullback Joe Savaiano dropped a pass the play before that would have gone for

Fenwick’s momentum started shifting the other way after the officials made multiple disputed calls against the Friar defense. At one point, Fenwick’s stop on third down was negated when WPHS players and coaches started yelling at an official who threw a flag from the other side of the field from where the play took place.

Fourth Quarter: Fenwick stunted the WPHS offense and found itself with the ball at their own 14-yard line with nine minutes left. On 3rd and 3, Cobb threw another dangerous pass as he was hit, and it was intercepted by corner Damian Goodman who took it to the house to give his team a 17-14 lead.

“As soon as adversity hit us on that pick-six, I knew I had to come back and lead my team,” said Cobb. “I owe this to the defense. They played a great game, and I gave it back to them at the end.”

The sophomore quarterback kept his composure and drove his team to the 49 yard line. On 3rd and 4, Cobb hit wide receiver Eian Pugh on a hitch route. Pugh shook the corner and ran the ball to the WPHS 5-yard line. On first and goal, Cobb tried to dive in for the touchdown, but the ball went up in the air and somehow ended up back in his hands at the 1-yard line. On the next play he ran it up the middle to give the Friars a 21-17 lead with 5:53 left.

The Grizzlies couldn’t recover as they ran three unsuccessful plays, and LB Declan Donnelly blocked WPHS’ punt. The Friars ran out the clock in WPHS territory to finish off the upset.

Post-game: “We didn’t want an asterisk by this win,” said Pettigrew. “We wanted to come out and beat a great team like this and do it on their home field. We played a great football game and [the players] should be proud.”

Fenwick will host Hillcrest High School at Triton on Nov. 9 in the second round of the playoffs.

Wednesday Journal learned that the coach the school referred to in its statement is Battaglia, who recently was taken off the staff of Lake Park High School’s football team after the school found out he pled guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse in 1992. This occurred at Driscoll High School where Nudo was the head coach from 1989-1991.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the victim of the 1992 case was 14 years old and a student at Driscoll when the abuse took place. Her brothers were on Driscoll’s football team where Battaglia served as an assistant coach.

Lake Park’s football program is under investigation after it failed to check the criminal background of Battaglia, who was a volunteer coach. In addition, the IHSA states, “Every person working with member IHSA high school student/athletes must be certified. This includes non-paid volunteers, part-time, etc.” IHSA By-law 2.070, section F, states, “Persons who stop teaching and do not possess a valid/current Illinois PEL, are not eligible to coach in Illinois without coaching certification.”

When Wednesday Journal reached out to Nudo about the situation, he declined to comment.
