‘Lockbox’ amendment raises eyebrows in D96

Schoolboard will transfer transportation funds before Election Day By BOB UPHUES Editor

The Riverside Elementary School District 96 board is poised to transfer millions of dollars from its transportation fund to the education fund, which pays for day-today operating expenses, amid fears that an amendment to the Illinois constitution may pass on Nov. 8, preventing the practice in the future. School board members are expected to act on Nov. 2, which is the date of their next regularly scheduled committee of the whole meeting. According to District 96’s interim director of finance and operations, David Sellers, the transfer will involve money moving from the transportation fund to the education fund. Part of the money being transferred is likely to include a loan to the transportation fund from the working cash fund. It was unclear at press time just how much money would be involved in the transfer. According to District 96’s approved budget, See LOCKBOX page 11

Sally Sloane is having a ball. Sitting at the pipe organ in the sanctuary of Riverside Presbyterian church, she’s not only just

hitting the keys. With her hands and her feet, she’s flipping switches that control the instrument’s 130 pistons, she’s opening and closing the shutters in front of the screened-in pipes, the oldest of which date back to 1904.

“I’ve been having so much fun,” says Sloane. “I haven’t been able to play like this since the ’90s” For the first since she became the organSee ORGAN on page 6
